SCLAA Receives Energy Efficiency Information Grant

T

he Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) is pleased to announce that it has received a grant of $743,310 from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (www.ret.gov.au) as part of the Energy Efficiency Information Grants Program, to develop and deliver a comprehensive and targeted program called Energy Efficiency Solutions for Australian Transport and Logistics SMEs. The Supply Chain, Transport & Logistics sector is a high energy consumer. There are significant opportunities for improving energy efficiency and reducing energy costs including reductions in the usage of electricity, all types of fuels and refrigerants as well as optimisation of transport, loads, materials handling, cold chain logistics, scheduling and other efficiencies. David Rogers, Chairman, SCLAA, indicated that SMEs (defined as 200 employees or less) in the supply chain and logistics industry face time and competitive pressures and lack the targeted skills and resources to identify and improve their energy use, which in turn would benefit their business productivity. This project aims to address this need, by delivering a comprehensive closed loop program for SCLAA members and other SMEs in the supply chain and logistics sector. The SCLAA will do this through the provision of targeted tools, resources and training tailored specifically to assist our substantial membership, contacts and the 409,756 SMEs across Australia who warehouse, distribute and/or transport goods to improve their energy efficiency. The program will be delivered face to face at 30 locations in every State and Territory across Australia and all components will be available on-line. Stage 1: Research and stakeholder consultation. Stage 2: Creation of a web-based ‘Energy Efficiency Assessment tool’ to assist SMEs to benchmark their energy performance against industry best practice, and understand where key opportunities to improve energy efficiency exist within their business. Each SME will receive a tailored assessment action plan, providing recommendations to cost-effectively reduce energy use. This web portal will also enable the ongoing monitoring of energy performance across the sector over time, assisting the SCLAA to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Stage 3: Based on the outcomes of Stage 1, creation of comprehensive workshop packs of tools and resources to assist time and resource poor SMEs to take action on energy efficiency. Stage 4: Promotion of the project through existing channels (see page 15) to build awareness across the sector of the project and how they can benefit environmentally and financially by participating.

Promotion activities will continue throughout the duration of the project to highlight upcoming events, new or updated resources, and celebrate improvements in industry benchmarks over time. Stage 5: Delivery of 1/2 - full day workshops in all 8 State and Territory Capital Cities, plus 22 regional locations in every State and Territory across Australia. Workshops will be run through existing SCLAA State Divisions. The SCLAA will also deliver 10 interactive webinars, where participants can also ask questions in real time and learn from other similar businesses. This approach will allow the SCLAA to reach SMEs constrained from attending a workshop by remoteness or time pressures, as well as reducing travel time and costs for participants and the project. Stage 6: Workshop content and recordings will be made available on-line to maximise our reach to SMEs who are unable to participate in a workshop or a webinar. Stage 7: Follow up all participants three and six months after stage 4 or 5. Ensure benchmarks are being bettered and that each SME has a strategy to reduce energy consumption. Stages 1 – 6 will be completed by July 2014 and stage 7 by December 2014. All content will be available on the SCLAA website. The SCLAA will be working with project partner ClimateWorks Australia www.climateworksaustralia.org to deliver the project.” “ClimateWorks is a not for profit organisation with an extensive track record. They will help the SCLAA to ensure the success of the project for SCLAA members and the over 400,000 SME’s in our industry. This initiative carried on from other energy efficiency initiatives and Awards the SCLAA commenced in the 1960’s." David Rogers, said that this project was an outstanding opportunity for the SCLAA to assist members and SME’s across Australia and another opportunity for the SCLAA to provide meaningful value to Australia’s Supply Chain & Logistics SME’s industry. Registration for SME training can be performed on right hand side of the SCLAA home page www.sclaa.com.au or by phoning the SCLAA Secretariat on 1300 364 160. *This activity received funding from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism as part of the Energy Efficiency Information Grants Program. WA Members head to Linfox

E

arly on a wet and windy in May a much in demand visit to Linfox’s Hazelmere resources industry hub occurred. Expertly hosted by several of the Linfox/FMG team, the party, restricted to thirty SCLAA members due to site safety rules, was treated to an overview of Linfox and its resources operations, refreshments, a site tour and plenty of opportunity for networking. Michael Hogg, FMG Contract Manager, delivered an in-depth and informative presentation covering subject matter ranging from Linfox’s origins, through its expansion into WA and Asia, the specifics of its resources operations, focussing on Hazelmere, to its future plans. Items of interest included: • 20,000 employees, 5,000 vehicles, 3.8m sq.m warehousing. • Reduction of customer base to focus on serving these core customers well. • Strateg y to own assets and resources rather than to subcontract. • Expansion into Asia Pacific, with associated challenges, such as spreading the safety culture into the Asian continent. • Linfox’s LeanFox, GreenFox and VISIONZERO programs. • Dramatic reduction in LTI since 2006. • 50% emission reduction from 2006 to 2015. • Focus on growth through excellence of service rather than through advertising. • Collaboration with SAP in development of TM9 transportation module.

• Five business units including one dedicated to resources. • Resources revenue growth from $120m in 2008 to projected $350m in 2013. • Partnerships with FMG, BHP and NickelWest at Hazelmere and Chevron at Henderson. • Future growth prospects in iron ore and LNG. • Development of regional sites in WA. • Hazelmere 8ha site already at capacity, with plans for new Bullsbrook 20ha location. • Australian supply chain challenges. • Road freight growth still main driver. The site tour then allowed an in depth examination of the Hazelmere operation, including the state-of-the art control room allowing the monitoring and management of all WA fleet vehicles, traffic f low management systems, secure employee parking, dedicated fuelling and weighbridge facilities, large undercover loading unloading area and innovative receivables workstations. Guides for the tour were from Linfox Michael Hogg (Contract Manager) and Ben Sullivan (General Manager Operations) and from FMG Jim Raven (Logistics Superintendent Hazelmere). Suitably enlightened and refreshed, and having dodged some heavy showers, the visitors indulged in some further networking, thanked Linfox for an excellent visit, and with lots of food for thought, headed off to their day jobs. All in all, a fascinating two hours.

Women in Supply Chain

T

Cindy Dunham

he WA Division hosted the Women in Supply Chain breakfast forum in June. This event was specifically aimed at the female members, with the main aim being to provide an opportunity to hear from a successful female leader from within the industry, Cindy Dunham, General Manager Operations, Australia West for Rio Tinto Procurement, and to discuss the introduction of an initiative within the WA Division that would focus on developing opportunities for women within the industry of supply chain and logistics. The forum was an overall success with the members contributing through the sharing of career experiences, from the good, the bad and the ugly, and brainstorming some key ideas on how to progress the initiative. It was heartening to see the commitment of the members to take carriage of this with the desire to maintain momentum and introduce further development opportunities into the WA Division calendar. The association views itself as a supporting platform for women in the industry with a vision of wanting to encourage and support more women to join and develop careers that will afford them STANLEY FAN longevity and progression alongside their male PRESIDENT counterparts.

t was an honour to represent the SCLAA Victorian Division at the RMIT University Prize giving ceremony ‘Celebrating The Next Generation of Business Leaders’, in May. The SCLAA sponsored the award for the most outstanding Graduate in the Bachelor of Business (Logistics and Supply Chain).
