Chairman’s report The SCLAA’s Women In Logistics Event is now just days away and will be one of our marquee events or 2016. A lot of planning and work has gone into the event and we look forward to seeing our National Partners, Members and Mark Skipper is Chairman of the Industry Contacts at SCLAA. With over 37 years of the Melbourne Cricket experience as Executive and Non Ground on April 29. We Executive Company Directors Mark have organised a great has supply chain and logistics experience in both consumer and line up of speakers with customer facing industries. the Minister and Media also attending. I recently attended the Transport and Logistics Living Lab an initiative of NICTA now called Data 61. They organised industry presentations on Sea Container tracking, Truck Wireless Safety Vehicle Communications and other interesting topics. The Truck Wireless Safety presentation discussed how wireless communications between trucks and other vehicles is improving road and driver safety, by alerting drivers to road hazards and traffic delays. The system works by trucks and vehicles communicating with other trucks and vehicles about hazards and delays in a certain area, so that they can slow down or avoid the area before they reach it. A trial is being conducted to improve the technology before it is deployed further. The Container tracking project also aims to improve efficiency by informing freight users of the precise location of containers on ships, rails and road, so they may plan and deploy assets more efficiently to move those containers. The Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT) has been turned into a political football and was terminated by Parliament on April 18. I was recently travelling on the Mid Western Highway between Bathurst and Cowra in NSW, to have a truck carrying around 14 tree trunks, the size of telegraph poles, overtake me. It was doing at times 2

SCLAA Newsletter April 2016

between 120 and 130 km/h, and then passing through towns which had 50 or 60 km/h zones at 70 km/h. The speed limiters on that truck were obviously not operational and it was a lethal weapon. Since the introduction of the National Heavy Vehicle National Law, the number of accidents involving trucks has fallen, however, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator needs to be more active and undertake frequent random audits of trucks to ensure there is no way these speed limiters can be turned off and on manually or electronically. The cost of freight for a B Double from say Sydney – Perth is around $12,000 and the back haul rate is around $6,000. The number of accidents in the higher costing sector, Sydney – Perth is 70% more than the back haul leg, so payments have nothing to do with driver safety. This research was conducted by Professor Kim Hassall of the National Truck Accident Research Centre. Around 65 % of the accidents involving trucks in Australia are the fault of the driver of another smaller vehicle, like a car. The 56th Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards will be held at the Grand Ballroom at Luna Park in Sydney this year, the same stunning venue we used in 2010. The Awards night is Wednesday November 23 and the Ballroom will have the stunning back drop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

and City behind the presentation stage. With daylight saving at that time of the year, the setting sun will be an excellent backdrop to the pre Awards drinks. The SCLAA Board has been working to increase the value we provide to Members and some exciting announcements will be made shortly. We continue to see Site Visits as popular events, with one we planned at Proctor & Gamble being oversubscribed in less than 90 minutes. If you know of a site that will be of interest to Members please let us know. We are all volunteers at the SCLAA and we would appreciate an injection of fresh ideas across the country, so please put your hand up to join your local State Division’s Committee. Its great for your career exposure as well!

Straight Talking

David Doherty OAM David Doherty OAM is a past President and Life Member of the SCLAA and a highly regarded logistician. Send your Straight Talk feedback and comments to davdoh1@optusnet.com.au

In the previous Newsletter I posed the question, “Would you lie or cheat to gain an advantage in your Supply Chains”? I received feedback from a number of people. Surprisingly some of them suggested cheating and fibbing was rife in the real world of Supply Chain. Seems to me that those people have got the wrong business partners and the wrong attitude! Anyway, an old colleague of mine, Dr Peter Dapiran (incidentally congratulations are due to him for recently completing a PhD) suggested that ethical Supply Chains (and Logistics) demanded more than the elimination of lying, cheating and distrust. He pointed out that non ethical businesses that exploit workers, or abuse the environment, etc., should also be avoided at all costs. Of course Peter is correct. Food for thought for some Australian businesses and practitioners! With a federal election looming there is an opportunity for the Supply Chain and Logistics profession and/or industries to collectively and actively seek government support and investment in innovative supply chain initiatives. The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) is influential in producing initiatives and comment on important infrastructure, regulatory and transport issues. The Supply Chain profession should collaborate to ensure appropriate leverage is applied to gain government support and investment for needed projects and programs. SCLAA seems well place to take the lead in creating genuine collaborations with

other Associations, Industry bodies and Academia to develop a plan for “Future Supply Chain and Logistics Innovations for Australia”. SCLAA Members have a significant responsibility and ability to make meaningful contributions to that Agenda.

When was the last time you asked the question, “Why do we do it like that?”. I often see situations where a task has been done the same way for a very long time but frequently, when the above question is asked, the responsible person cannot provide a real answer. Give it a try. I will be very surprised if you don’t find that several tasks can be eliminated without detriment to the overall process. Social media is increasingly influencing everything we do. In its various forms it can have great benefit and on the other hand be very harmful. I am exhausted by the intrusiveness and the apparent addiction affecting many people. It is time to make a stand! I am mad as hell really and I cannot take it anymore! (apologies to Peter Finch for stealing his line from the movie Network). I am going to close down my mobile devices and computers for “rest periods” every day. On weekends and such I will abandon the devices for most of my waking hours. I am also unsubscribing from every unnecessary supplier of unsolicited garbage. I am going to avoid all unwanted electronic and technology related trivia distractions. Give it a try yourself! Perhaps we can reclaim some

time to be more productive, human, and cognizant. There is a plethora of Awards for excellence (and such) around Australia every year. The SCLAA Supply Chain and Logistics Awards are arguably the most prestigious and longest running of the relevant Awards in this country. The 2016 Awards are to be presented in November at a Gala Event at Luna Park in Sydney. I urge all SCLAA Members to seek out and/ or support nominations for the various categories. The nominations process is not onerous. Nominators and Nominees derive significant value from participating whilst making a real contribution to the standing of our profession and industries. Winners and placegetters of course gain an enduring addition to their resume. Give it some thought. I am certain you can find a worthy person or organisation to nominate. The ANZAC Centenary is an important event in our Australian history. I will be attending a Dawn Service on April 25 and I hope you will also make the effort. Logistics support has always been a vital component of military action and it was no doubt a vital factor in the assault and the retreat at Gallipoli. Spare some time to reflect and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The last word! Read the Norman Doidge books on rewiring your Brain. You will find life changing opportunities in those books.

“See everything. Overlook a great deal. Improve a little”. (Pope John XX111) “Be the change you want to see in the World.” (Gandhi)

A Woman’s Journey to Success in Logistics

Sharyn Grant

LSC Solutions Founder and Managing Director Sharyn Grant shares her story As you may now be aware, LSC Solutions Pty Ltd is proudly supporting Women In Logistics – The Final Frontier as a Silver Sponsor. When SCLAA National Partner LSC Solutions Pty Ltd was approached to sponsor the Women In Logistics event (scheduled for 29 April 2016; click on this link for details), it wasn’t hard to get the attention of the woman behind LSC Solutions Pty Ltd, Managing Director and Supply Chain Value Creator, Sharyn Grant. Sharyn told us that a key memory from the year 2000 had come back to her. She was on the SCLAA Executive Committee in Brisbane (the only female on a 16-person committee), and commenced an initiative called “Women in Logistics”. Sharyn garnered a small following and met with logistics women for coffee to see if she could build a larger following for this initiative and in doing so encourage more women to join the SCLAA.

selection decisions should be based on merit, Sharyn wasn’t going to take any more chances. After the Palazzo Versace project in 2000 she attended 6 interviews for logistics and supply chain positions in her steel cap boots and Koala Blue work pants and shirt, with mobile on hip, confident as ever and ready to take on the world. Sharyn was offered all 6 positions. “I’ve learnt that you have to create your own destiny and own it. No one will care more about your career than yourself. So you better have a good career plan and be loyal to it, no matter what! Just make it happen!” The Women In Logistics initiative appealed to Sharyn due to its goals including: •

de-genderising the supply chain and logistics industry;

reducing female gaps in industry;

ensuring wage-setting does not include a gender criterion;

“Back then I was the only female attending SCLAA site visits and the 130-person Golf day”.

ensuring gender diversity by giving women and men equal exposure to career choices and opportunities;

Due to a lack of time, Sharyn was unable to remain with the committee. “I was co-managing the fitout of the Palazzo Versace resort on the Gold Coast at that time (whilst working for RGC Consulting) and that project took over my life, requiring long days. It was delivered on time, in full, on budget, with high quality product to a very happy client. I also got to meet Santos Versace and Donatella Versace during the project. Santos shook my hand and said “Thank you very much”.

encouraging women to pursue supply chain and logistics careers; and

“The Women in Logistics initiative has reminded me to apply more focus on Sharyn’s preference is that an end-toend supply chain wide view is taken, so encouraging female supply that the Women in Logistics initiative chain experts to apply. is not skewed towards the Transport & So if you are reading this, Logistics sector only. please email your resume to “Many people will actually sharyn@lscs.com.au.” not know that any inequality issues exist. The initiative will require information sharing and education, and it will need to crystal clear about what gaps it is trying to close, how, have SMART objectives and a performance scorecard to track outcomes.

Sharyn says: “I owe a lot to RGC Consulting who gave me that opportunity as their Logistics Coordinator. It opened up the flood gate of more supply chain and logistics career opportunities. Having been knocked back from many male-dominated and logistics positions Sharyn decided in 2000 that she would no longer wear dresses to interviews. Whilst

I am very excited that we get to work with clients who have females in senior management positions and in supply chain / logistics positions. We (females) have come a long way over the past 20+ years – we have ourselves to thank for that, and to the men who believed in us and helped us. We all need each other equally.”

ACT & Southern NSW

Division Report Gary Pearce President ACT is a hive of activity! The ACT and Southern NSW Division has continued its increased activity. With a member survey and a direct mail membership drive taking the forefront. Results of the survey are slowly being received. It is hoped that all current members who received a survey will take the time to complete it and return it to the committee so we can better gauge what we need to do to better connect with you and to provide the sort of division that you want to be active in. We welcome two new members to the Division since our last meeting: •

Mr Paul Dubuisson-Perrine – PDP Dynamic Consulting Services; and

Ms Karen Godzik – Toll Express

At this point we are focussed on increasing attendance at our monthly meeting. We will then look to branch out and develop a broader educational/information campaign of events and meetings including invitations to suitable guest speakers. At our March meeting Tony Goninan and Allan Jones provided advice of the role that the SCLAA can play in assisting members (and employees of member organisations and other nonmembers) to gain a formal qualification in the related fields of warehousing and distribution, transport and logistics, supply chain management and so on. Tony and Allan have offered to assist any ACT &SNSW member who wishes to gain qualification of Certified Professional Logistician (CPL). The next couple of months for the Division will see us focus on building the membership, increasing the engagement with current members and providing appropriate events and opportunities for networking.

The Division is looking to establish a diverse series of events over the coming months.

Division President, Gary Pearce, attended the Asset Management Conference (AMPEAK) in Adelaide (10-13 Apr 16)... AMPEAK 2016 was aimed at asset owners from all industries as well as asset management professionals and associated service providers. Gary reports: “I experienced a diverse range of informative and educational topics delivered by a global collective of experts from industries including Mining, Transport, Water, IT industries, Government, Academia, and more! AMPEAK presented an industry-wide view of asset management through a range of exhibits, case studies and technical content. “The event provided opportunities to network, establish and expand local and global contacts with asset owners, asset managers and service providers. It provided an opportunity to identify industry benchmarks, eliminate reactivity and align asset management strategies to obtain the best possible outcomes. There were many common themes associated with supply chain and logistic activities.

Division Report Matt Madsen President

On 25 February 2016 twelve lucky SCLAA members were fortunate enough to attend a tour of the DHL Express Melbourne facility. The tour gave an insight into how the World’s largest logistics company operates and guests were given an informative walkthrough of the modern eight months old facility. DHL Express displayed a number of aspirational characteristics which are of no surprise given they are the market leader in Australian express logistics services. It was apparent that DHL aims very high, with ambitious environmental goals, dedicated 24/7 international air fleet management centres and, perhaps most importantly, happy, driven long-term employees.

The facility was fresh, modern and lively operated by a highly autonomous conveyor belt system with integrated automatic parcel photography, sizing, weighing and x-ray technologies for tracking and security. Of particular interest was DHL’s valuable (and exclusive for a logistics company) access inside Melbourne’s airport and their capability to provide a 24-hour turnaround service to New Zealand customers. A special thanks to Lisa Phillips from DHL for hosting the event.
