SCLAA National Chairman - Amanda O'Brien

Amanda O'Brien is the Chairman of the SCLAA. Amanda is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.

It was my great pleasure and honour to Chair the Supply Chain & Logistics Association once again in 2019. When I started my journey with SCLAA in 2012 on

the Victorian committee, then as an Independent Director of the Board, I would never have imagined that I would be given the privilege to Chair this wonderful association. The past years as Chairman have been very fulfilling and although I notified the Board of my decision to step down it was always the SCLAA’s aim to continue growing other avenues of opportunity and growth in International markets and this has been one of the many focus areas this year. As Chairman of the SCLAA, I acknowledge that we live and work in a globalised economy, we have grown these alliances and brought the key factors effecting trade in the supply chain to the forefront. We collectively as a Board have been working diligently to put in place a new structure to build on the growing success of our National footprint that has resulted in another strong financial result. In 2020 I am pleased to announce that I will take up the role of Chairman International Relations and will continue to pursue these important relationships and strategic alliances that will foster further opportunities for our Association and industry. It is worth noting that at our prestigious ASCL awards night in Sydney this year we hosted the largest delegation of overseas guests ever. It has again been a very successful year for the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia and, as we head towards 2020, it is time yet again to reflect on the year. The strong financial and progressive implementation of new initiatives with over 75 events held Nationally, has cemented SCLAA as the Association of choice for all individuals working across the supply chain both in Australasia and Overseas and it is testament to our hard working Secretariat, and Divisions in New South Wales/ACT, Victoria/Tasmania, South Australia/ Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia. Our valued National teams contribution and hard work in bringing principal initiatives to professionals, industry and practitioners in Australia is to be applauded and we will collectively continue to build on this momentum in 2020. There have been too many highlights to mention them all but on review of the year here are a few that made a significant impact on us for without a team effort these events and initiatives could not have been possible. To our National Partners, Corporate Partners, individual members, future leaders and all volunteers, thank you for your ongoing 2

support,. Your contributions have been significant and although we have had challenges we have definitely had a lot of fun and enjoyment on this continuing journey together. Of particular note as the first NGO to enter into a significant Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian International Trade Association (AITA) in the implementation of the “Belt and Road Australia-China Supply Chain and Logistics Alliance” in 2018, and as a result of this we were able to successfully complete trade missions to China in 2019 where we signed additional MOU’s with the Tianjin Transportation and Logistics Association, the Tianjin Cross border E-commerce Association, the China Communication & Transportation Association, the China Vegetable Marketing Association International Exchange and Cooperation Committee and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, China.

These important alliances will aim to provide new platforms with a wide range of services, including conferences, exhibitions, business consultation, overseas visits and training programs to help enhance communication and increase partnerships between all Alliance members. It is important that this Alliance will connect major stakeholders involved in the supply chain and logistics industry in both Australia and China. We look forward to procuring stronger ties with our

overseas partners and working towards the initiatives we have executed over the years to not only implement further ties but to progress our future trade visits to China and other overseas trading partners in 2020. With technological advancements, ‘block chain’ and AI being at the forefront of people’s discussions in the supply chain and industry circles, SCLAA was pleased to represent Australia at the 2019 World VR Industry Conference exploring the 5G-enabled development of the VR industry in the initial stage of commercialization. More than 7,000 experts, scholars and entrepreneurs in the field of VR, AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality) from home and abroad attended the conference, nearly 300 of whom shared their insights at the main forum and 23 parallel forums. The three day event featured a VR expo with 60,000 square metre display area and 215 domestic and overseas corporate exhibitors from Japan, India, Germany and many other countries and regions demonstrating their latest developments of VR and AR products and applications.

As part of our new strategic plan the SCLAA website went live in May with a new look and added benefits for SCLAA members. This included the free access to Skills Gap Analysis Testing which proved extremely popular. This free skills gap analysis tool for supply chain & logistics professional has been a key tool for our members to access to benefit their careers. The capabilities assessed include inventory control; supply planning, demand planning, transport, order management, warehousing, manufacturing, legal contracting, financials and project management. The benefits of these include benchmarking your capabilities against the supply chain professions; gain insights into your career journey and expertise; and discover the skills you need to progress your career through e-learning recommendations. This tool also enables more accredited and complex courses of study for professionals enabling further e-commerce courses and units to progress your own self development. In addition SCLAA launched the individual logistics simulation training to develop and augment capabilities for individuals and companies working in the supply chain. Through collaboration with commercial, government and university partners these courses address global challenges in supply chain & logistics, with bio security inspection, workplace safety and food quality control being offered at a 25% discount for SCLAA members. The SCLAA has also been proactive and contributed to the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy and National Action Plan. It was evident that data is needed to improve freight and supply chain productivity and competitiveness. The reference group assisted the Freight and Supply Chain Taskforce to refine the approach and scope for policy development. This proved to be an important National initiative for the Strategy and the Plan within the supply chain.

SCLAA’s Women in Logistics event held this year in 2019 was again a great success and with its inception 4 years ago has become one of our Associations flagship events. This event has consistently challenged our thinking, inspired action and encouraged diversity and essentially continues to highlight the need for men and women to support each other to champion diversity and ensure stronger working relationships. This event has been popular and really pushed the boundaries of what diversity means and how leaders in industry can progress an inclusive agenda rather than an exclusive agenda in corporate Australia. This event has resonated with many across industry and it will continue to have an impact for change and collaboration into 2020 and beyond. One of the things I am most proud of is that we have given more opportunity to more women and this diversity has culminated in not only strong business relationships throughout all our ranks but as a result has proven to be advantageous economically.

It was also a immensely satisfying to be featured in the Qantas Magazine on How to make a small business Big featured with Andrew Bassat from Seek and Richard White from Wisetech Global, a very big supporter and contributor to SCLAA’s success on sharing lessons learnt in business and the interesting statistic from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission is that 7,747 business’ in Australia went into administration during the 2017-108 financial year.

It is indeed an interesting fact as Australia and particularly associations have had unprecedented challenges over the last few years, SCLAA has grown and is in a very strong financial position with new opportunities to carry out the future vision and this is attributed to making smart and tough decisions and having a strong team where everyone is working towards the same goal. Our valued partnerships with AITA, Megatrans, Wisetech Global, The Australian Institute of Business, Australian Border Force, MHD, LMA, Prime Media, MARC and the University of Sydney have all proven fruitful. Dematic have been a trusted, loyal and incredible partner of SCLAA’s journey and we value their continued support. The Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies award implemented in 2017 is a great initiative that annually celebrates the universities high achieving students and the award is showcased and accredited by the university of Sydney. This will go on perpetually and is something in which we have been instrumental, ensuring that future leaders in this field recognise and value the SCLAA. So it is timely that we mention the Future Leaders Groups who have been essential to the growth of our young professionals who have joined SCLAA and have become

involved in the committees and driven attendance at our networking events to an all time high. It is so encouraging to see young supply chain professionals developing in the industry and also driving their own futures and making significant contributions to our Association. This is a key focus of our Association and we have been buoyed by the enthusiasm and numbers of young people joining as we encourage progression of talented young professionals within our ranks. It was also pleasing to have the opportunity to join DCN with industry heads and judge the Maritime & Shipping Awards for 2019, and it was additionally satisfying to know that the SCLAA has definitely lifted its profile within industry and Industry Associations and this will no doubt further the information and involvement of our key stakeholders in many events and briefings that will impact the supply chain industry in the future. This leads us onto he 2019 ASCL Awards, the key highlight and flagship event of the year. The team’s hard work and commitment to this event was exemplary. The event held at Luna Park was our biggest and best ever and my warm congratulations go out to all the judges, volunteers, winners, companies and individuals whose participation

L-R: Mark Healing (Qld State President/SCLAA Director), Matthew Guthrie (Qld Committee), George Hodgson (Qld Committee), Patrick Ingenegeren (Independent Director), Stephen Lakey (incoming VIC/TAS State President); Kyle Rogers (VIC/TAS State President/Incoming VIC/TAS Director), Joshua Holmes (NSW Director / National Vice Chairman), Matt Wragg (SA/NT Director / Incoming SCLAA National Chairman), Amanda O’Brien (SCLAA National Chairman), Brian Lynn (WA State President), Cathy-Anne Jones (NSW State President), Sue Tomic (Indepenent Director), Daniel Di Stasio (Incoming WA Director), Vicki Di Thomasis (National Secretariat), Don Nardella (Incoming Indepedent Director), and Fran de Klerk (National Secretariat) Photograph taken by Sam Tabone at the 2019 ASCL Awards Gala Dinner on 22 November 2019 4

and contribution made the event another great success. There have also been too many milestones, individuals, government officials, dignitaries, colleagues, partners and friends to mention who have made this journey unforgettable and the Association has so many more chapters to write. SCLAA for 2020 is in great shape and as it moves into its next phase it is also pleasing that we have diverse people with strong skills and future leaders who have come through the ranks to have the opportunity and new and fresh ideas to gather momentum and accelerate progress, build on the foundations of strength and unity well into the future. To have led and been part of the transformation of the Association has been personally fulfilling and I know that the SCLAA’s future is in good hands. We are here to serve and will continue to serve our valued members and partners across all sectors working in the supply chain. Throughout the last 9 years I have had the opportunity to meet and work with incredible individuals and teams who have not only become close colleagues but friends. The journey has been filled with not only challenges but enjoyment and the unity and calibre of people who make up this great association have never been as united and as I finish off my tenure as Chairman, I would like to think

5

SCLAA Newsletter December 2019

that I had some input and influence over that; and that the unity, the progress made into a vibrant and progressive association with inclusion for all will pave the way towards our future success. I would like to take this opportunity to wish our New Chairman Mr Matthew Wragg and all the new Directors of the Board a very rewarding and successful future. On behalf of the SCLAA National Board, Divisional Committees and all the volunteers at the SCLAA, we would like to wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas, a prosperous New Year and I know we look forward to working with you in 2020 on future exciting initiatives with many, many more announcements to come. By making sense of the world through the lens of location, we’re investing in the future and preparing for a world of connectivity and automation, and empowering our customers to achieve better outcomes – from helping a city manage its infrastructure or an enterprise optimise its assets to guiding drivers to their destination safely. From a supply chain perspective global business are under pressure to enhance customer service while streamlining costs and processes. This puts margin pressure on logistics partners, who have to look for ways to maximize asset utilization, lower costs, and improve delivery performance. HERE offers a rich portfolio of map data and location services specifically built to support some of the most critical fleet operations – going well beyond mapping, navigation and routing into other aspects such as road curvature, slope, truck attributions, speed limits for trucks, location of traffic lights, accident black spots, and location of tolls. With our enterprise-grade data and services, software developers have the power to maximize their customers’ most critical KPIs. • • • • • • • •

Transforming fleet operations, from start to finish Calculate accurate ETAs Improve safety Increase asset utilization Lower operational costs Optimize routes Enhance the driver experience Use tracking and location data to improve efficiency, spot risks and address challenges in your supply chain before they become critical.

HERE is the only location technology provider to have digitised Australia’s national truck data. For drivers, this means we can provide truck parking locations on route, ensure their route avoids any bridges unsuitable for the vehicle height, and direct them to the correct loading dock or gate at the destination on arrival. For the operational team, we can provide control rooms with complete visibility of vehicles on the road with reliable delivery time estimations, helping them save money and improve the quality of their own services. From leaving the centre to the delivery time stamp to its return ETA, data enables controllers to optimise the last mile experience for inbound and outbound trucks, thus reducing time wastage, decreasing driver costs and ultimately increasing the number of trips completed. Our HERE Location Platform, a cloud based, secure development environment, brings everything you need for location-centric development into one place. It can help mitigate the problems we face as our populations continue to grow, as well as holding the key to new kinds of services that can change people’s lives for the better – autonomous driving, autonomous drones, advanced traffic management, smart logistics, asset tracking and more.

Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM I love cruising! All the creature comforts plus entertainment, learning experiences, and respite form city life with its technology demands. This past week I have been on board MS Maasdam. Departing Sydney then docking in north Queensland towns before heading to Islands in Papua New Guinea. Internet on board ship is spasmodic via satellite but good enough to keep up with news from home. Good attentive service with plenty of options for food and drinks. Of course, USD 50 for a bottle of Australian Shiraz is outrageous when I can buy it at home for around AUD10. Everything on Maasdam is charged to guests in USD - even shore excursions delivered by Australian Tour companies - an issue that really irritates me. However, the Supply Chain and Logistics is a credit to the professionals responsible for maintaining supply given the great variance in customer choices. Demand management must be an ongoing challenge. Anyway, my point is that I am enjoying all that the modern globalised world can offer. Shops on board are overflowing with luxury brands, technology, internet, etc are evident everywhere. Then we sailed into Milne Bay and the many Islands of New Guinea. Just a short distance from Australia! but another world.

12

SCLAA Newsletter December 2019

The locals are not burdened yet by our technologies or new age comforts. Shoes are not common on hardened feet. Many school kids do not wear shoes. Schools are basic but well managed. Our tour guide whispers that education on the inhabited Islands is very good but what is the point? There are no jobs! Supply Chain and Logistics are different here. Nearly everything is carried by hand and foot. Very few vehicles. Food markets offer home grown fruits and vegetables or sea caught fish. Piles of charred (blackened) fish are offered on wooden shelves with servers keeping flies and insects at bay by flourishing tree branches in continuous sweeps. No refrigeration in view anywhere. Houses generally have no running water or sewer. Not a mobile phone or I-Pad in sight. The resident Islanders look healthy and well fed. They also seem happy but I sense a bit embarrassed about cadging money from tourists for wooden and craft mementos. Again our tour guide whispers that not all these tourist items are made locally. In any event Supply Chain and Logistics is very basic here with supply and demand keenly balanced on a daily basis. No complexity or clever moves here. Just grow, catch, and sell. Would our new technologies and comforts improve the lives of the Islanders? I sense they are

satisfied and not burdened by fake aspirations and expectations. Their expectations seem to be to survive and maintain their families. Many readers will remember the great support PNG "FUZZY WUZZIES" played in the 2nd World War by supporting our Australian Soldiers in their conflict with Japanese forces. Lest we forget the Fuzzy Wuzzies! PNG islands are an experience that all Australians should seek to visit and learn about. We can and should help those resilient and lovely people in embracing a future that delivers for their kids. On the way back to Australia I start to strongly castigate myself. Why? Well, as a consequence of my visit I have already committed to donating and keeping in contact with a school in Alutou. Yet I have not been as compassionate with our own Indigenous people in remote areas of Australia. Time now to learn more and bring support to our own people from another forgotten world.

"If at first you don’t succeed - find out if the loser gets anything" Merry Christmas to all supply chain and logistics people everywhere. Namaste David Doherty OAM davdoh1@optusnet.com.au

Michael, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for being our Master of Ceremonies back by popular demand for the second year and thank you for that warm welcome. It is very kind of you to mention my late mother and it goes without saying it has been a very challenging period however she would want me to get on with it. To the hard working Divisions in New South Wales/ACT, Victoria/Tasmania, South Australia/Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia, a big thank you for your valued contribution and hard work in bringing principal initiatives to professionals, industry and practitioners in Australia. It is also pleasing to know that for many of you this is the first time you have attended collectively as a group and I am proud that in 2019 this represents the development of the close collaboration between states that has been sadly missed in years gone by. This is a great occasion and a night of celebration and how delighted and honoured I am to be standing in front of people who make up the fabric of a diverse and dynamic Association. I have had the great pleasure of serving this Association and it is just an exceptional honour to work with outstanding individuals, members, National Partners, advocates and business’ across the broad spectrum of the supply chain. It is a night to not only celebrate the extraordinary and outstanding achievements of supply chain professionals in the industry, but that of all individuals whose hard work, sacrifice and dedicated contributions to industry is what I am proud of. The diversity of talent and expertise

within the State committees and our teams of volunteers who give up their time make up the rich tapestry of the Association. These contributions have ensured that we have successfully achieved not only a profitable year but a year of growth. There have been over 75 events held nationally in 2019 and it has been a very rewarding year. As the great Dr John Gattorna stated in his speech at these awards ceremony and throughout our many discussions, it is people that make up the supply chain and people are the most important part of our global supply chains. Of course this night would not have been possible had it not been for our generous sponsors and supporting partners. It is with great thanks that I acknowledge our Gold sponsor Wisetech Global for not only being part of this night but supporting our Association over the past few years. I would personally like to acknowledge Mr Richard White, WiseTech Global Founder and CEO, who has not only been a great support to me in my career and given me so much valuable advice over the years, and who will be making a keynote address a little later in the program and we are all looking forward to that! To our Silver Sponsor, Dematic, the long business relationship we have had over the last decade has been invaluable so thank you. To our Prize Sponsor LMA, your contribution of the Future Leader Award prize is highly regarded by us and you have brought great training to the many recipients who have received this award in past years. To our supporting Partner the Packaged Dangerous Goods company, thank you. To the valued National Partners with whom we have built up strong alliances over the past few years, we are looking forward to working with you all well into the future. I am also pleased to announce that a significant event and milestone took place today for the SCLAA. Today we met at the NSW Parliament with Speaker of the House Mr Jonathan O’Dea overseeing the event and signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia, the Australian International Trade Association (AITA) and the Xian Sub Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and it gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome our overseas dignitaries and visitors to our event tonight. It was momentous for our Association to be the first NGO to finalise the establishment of the "Belt and Road AustraliaChina Supply Chain and Logistics Alliance" in 2018 and

Amanda O'Brien with Michael Guo, CEO, Australia International Trade Association (AITA) 15

SCLAA Newsletter December 2019

since then we have signed several MOU’s. These alliances will significantly enhance our bilateral communications and strengthen supply chain and logistics links between the two countries. A personal thank you to Mr Michael Guo, the CEO of the Australian International Trade Association for enabling this significant step and facilitating and collaboration on many initiatives with our Association and in particular the two successful SCLAA trade missions to China this year. To our distinguished guests from China, Mr Li Suihui, Deputy Director of Xian Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and his trade delegation a very warm welcome again. We look forward to procuring stronger ties with you and working towards the initiatives we discussed today as we prepare and look forward to another trade visit in 2020. As we all know, this industry with its changing economic conditions, increased globalisation and developments in technology has faced and will continue to face increasing challenges. Even though we face these challenges, I truly believe that at this point it is the most exciting industry to be working in. The passion of its people and the strong relationships and networks that continue to grow and expand will drive the supply chain both domestically and internationally. As Dr John Gattorna always stated, regardless of technology, infrastructure or commodities moving around the globe, the supply chain is made up of people and people are the most important part of any successful supply chain. Yesterday the Board of Directors held our Annual General Board Meeting in Sydney and I am delighted to be able to make several exciting announcements tonight. Before I do that I want to state that it is so pleasing that many of the initiatives developed over 3 years ago in our Strategic Plan have been brought to fruition and the Association has enjoyed another profitable and successful year, with profit tripling in the last 12 months. The Board has evolved and the Association has gone from strength to strength with high calibre individuals working and contributing to that success. I would like to add that it is important that when we are given positions of responsibility, we serve and continue to serve our valued members and partners across all sectors working in the supply chain. Now to our exciting announcements, having commenced my journey with SCLAA in 2012 working on the Victorian Committee, in 2013 working as an independent Director on the Board and from November 2016 right through to today as Chairman, I have been privileged and honoured to lead this association and it’s great people through some challenging and transitional times, however very rewarding times on this journey. I advised the Board of my decision to step down as Chairman this year however the work continued on and it has been my great honour to work on the new vision for the Association and provide more resources to our Board which was passed by a special resolution at our Annual General Meeting today and will continue to provide a strong platform for future success and opportunities. I have no doubt that the next chapters of the Association's growth will be exponential with the collective work of our close team and the initiatives we have put in place. So without further adieu I would like to announce the following, (and can I have you stand up if you are present so everyone can see who you are, I will only announce the

changes that have been made to the Board structure this evening) The following Independent Directors have been nominated onto the SCLAA Board; • Mr Don Nardella – Past Federal Politician and Speaker of the House • Ms Samantha Martin Williams – HVCCC • Ms Lydia Kendray – Toll • Ms Heather Mattes - Specialist Consultant • Mr Kyle Rogers - The new Director for Victoria/Tasmania • Mr Daniel Di Stasio - The new Director for WA Could you please give them a big round of applause...... Before I announce, by unanimous vote, the new Chairman of the Board I would like to briefly touch on the things that I am most proud of and take you back to what our structure was like in the earlier days. I would like to think that above all I was a change agent and although a lot feistier then, I may have mellowed a lot with age, made continued progress to accelerate women’s acceptance in this industry and elevate them to positions where their talents made not only good business sense but strong economic sense. When I started on the Board it was all male as most boards in Australia at that time, ours had been so for a very long time (which did not deter me or concern me) and I am proud that during very transitional and challenging times throughout the Associations history, worked diligently to change the dynamic and I think you would agree with the diversity not only on the Board but the numbers of women working on the State Committees. With the additional Directors coming on it has accelerated our growth and opportunities and has always been done in a collaborative fashion. And let me clarify that by saying that change was not made on a quota but was substantiated with individuals both capable and qualified to step up to those positions to provide further growth for our Association. At the Women in Logistics event that was commenced 4 years ago we have always stated the importance that men attend and they attended in droves and I believe collaboration is essential as without it we are not effective. I know many great men who have assisted and supported me on this journey and many who started the foundations of the Association so it is unfortunate this is still an issue being debated into 2020 but things have vastly improved across industry and will continue to improve and the changes made have not only solidified our standing as a great Association but will ensure it grows from strength to strength moving forward. I was proud of our associations formed with the Australian Institute of Business, The University of NSW Alumni Award, the multiple organisations we partnered with to bring supply chain expertise to our wider audience, a partnership with Comprara to provide a self-managed e-learning platform for the industry, Bondi Labs to bring their virtual innovative training to the industry, international alliances, bringing National Partners to our Association, events, seminars, Parliamentary visits in Canberra and meetings with an array of dignitaries and politicians too many to mention, giants in the industry and representing the association domestically and internationally. I would like to think I have played a 16

SCLAA Newsletter December 2019

role in growing the Association to what it is today, a thriving Association with strong financials, progressive thinking and modern day Board, whilst always respecting the past and the countless individual’s contribution. I am proud of the future leaders, the concentration on bringing the Association into the new age with new platforms, knowledge, focus on technology but most of all bringing people together to contribute to the industry I respect and am so passionate about. I am confident the Association will forge forward and that the people on the Board left in the charge of this great Association will no doubt continue the legacy and strength of the foundations and unity of our National teams well into the future. As I prepare to stand down as Chairman, I recognise that over the years I have tried to impart that the world and our relationships with other countries was key to future significant strategy and that it would be important for SCLAA to develop those relationships as what is happening globally affects what happens domestically in Australia. I have also been proud of the development and contribution of our relationship with China among others. I have been asked to stay on and continue with my work on the International side and will head up a new division of SCLAA as Chairman International Relations and will have Stanley Fan, previously Director for WA, stay on as Director Asia Pacific, and Erica Gilcrist, previously an Independent Director, who will stay on as Director for Singapore and there are several other announcements to be made over the next few months. The Directors all agreed at our AGM and for the future strategy of SCLAA that we will aggressively grow the international arm of the Association to develop those important initiatives and opportunities for our partners and embark on alliances some already in motion with Vietnam and Indonesia and New Zealand with many more to come. I am happy and delighted to announce that the new SCLAA Chairman for 2020 is Mr Matthew Wragg. Matthew could you please stand up please give him a round of applause. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Matthew on his appointment and I have no doubt that he will lead the Association on its path with passion and strength. I would in closing and it would be remiss if I did not state as my late mother said to me, money does not buy class, actions speak louder than words, how you manage and perform in the face of adversity is how others will judge you, life is precious and that how you handle yourself when under pressure from enemy or foe will test the measurement of your character, give back always and be generous of spirit. (Richard White exclaimed 'here, here') I want to again thank you for your attendance and your continued support of the Association. We sincerely hope you will continue to follow, partner and grow with our Association for years to come and I know I speak on behalf of the entire SCLAA Board when I say a very BIG thank you. I would in closing also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2020! We look forward to working with you all again next year. Thank you again, have a fabulous night and enjoy the rest of the evening!

Adore Beauty expands its warehouse operations with Zebra mobile computers Adore Beauty expands its warehouse operations with Zebra’s mobile computers. Established in 2000 by founder, Kate Morris, Adore Beauty was the first beauty e-commerce site in Australia. Its mission was to make a wide variety of beauty brands accessible to everyone, particularly people living in regional and remote areas. Adore Beauty has enjoyed phenomenal growth over the past five years and has outgrown its premises several times during this period. On average, the company dispatches 6,500 orders daily from its new warehouse in Keilor Park and its staff of 85 is set to expand to 100 in this warehouse by December. In 2018, its paper-based warehouse solution was stretched to capacity. The surge in customer orders placed an increased amount of pressure on its staff to maintain the same level of speed and accuracy in its picking process. This alone could compromise their renowned customer service reputation and potential for future growth. Realising that this was no longer sustainable, particularly as it prepared to move operations to a new facility in Northcote Victoria, Adore Beauty reached out to Gamma Solutions. The company needed to source and implement a robust mobile computing solution that is durable and easy to use. Moreover, Adore Beauty needed a solution that would improve warehouse workflows, reduce the manual labour- intensive transactions and move beyond traditional paper-based recording. Team culture and satisfaction is an important aspect of Adore Beauty’s continued operational success. Therefore, the experience of its warehouse team in the assessment of its business mobile computing requirements and solution was an important factor that needed to be considered.

Understanding the priority of the staff experience, Gamma Solutions worked extensively with Adore Beauty to design and deploy a robust “point of activity” solution that would satisfy staff workflows and fulfil the company’s supply chain visibility requirements. A focus group made up of the Adore Beauty’s warehouse employees then reviewed a dozen potential options:

The Zebra TC8000 was a clear winner. Charley Fisk, Adore Beauty’s Warehouse Operations Manager commented, “The Zebra TC8000 was definitely a crowd favourite. Our team loved the touch screen element and its ergonomics. The device is also considerably light eliminating any concerns about damaging the device if dropped. From an operational perspective, we can continue business as usual with no interruptions and importantly the device is scalable to support future growth.” More than 35 Zebra TC8000 units were deployed in August 2018 speeding up inbound functions, while increasing order and stock level accuracies.

Results Since the introduction of the TC8000 solution, Adore Beauty has seen a 30% increase in productivity across the warehouse operations, a 50% reduction in cost per unit and an accuracy rate of 99.9% for outbound orders. The touch screen keypad means warehouse staff can type up to 40% faster with 60% fewer errors. “Our staff are extremely happy with the new devices. This is really important for our business as they are the ones who use it day in day out. Not only did it get the best feedback from our team but provided us with an investment opportunity that will help us to continue to grow and keep up with changes in the business.” Watch Zebra’s Adore Beauty case study here and discover more about deploying mobile technology in the warehouse to increase efficiency and improve workflows.

Parliamentary Forum - NSW Parliament & Overseas Delegates Address by SCLAA Chairman, Amanda O'Brien, to the NSW Parliament and oveseas delegates Good Afternoon Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia along with the Directors of the Board it gives me great pleasure as Chairman to again welcome you to the NSW Parliament and Australia. I would like to thank you for travelling from China to join us as at this event and look forward to catching up with you again at the prestigious 59th Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards to be held at Luna Park this evening. I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land we have gathered on today. I pay my respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation. A better understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures develops an enriched appreciation of Australia’s cultural heritage and we as a body believe this is essential to the maturity of Australia as a nation and fundamental to the development of an Australian identity. I would like to thank Mr Jonathan O’Dea, the Speaker of the New South Wales Parliament, for hosting our delegation today and acknowledge the following guest; Mr Li Suihui, Deputy director of Xi’an Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Mr Xing Yanan, Chairman of Xi’an ZhongTian Foods Co.,Ltd. It is an honour and a privilege to serve you as an ambassador for Australia and humbling to see so many distinguished guests who have made the time to meet and support our ongoing instrumental alliance. I have always had a deep respect for your great Nation and its industrious people, a love of your culture and the bonds of friendship that have been extended to me on many occasions since I first visited China in 1998. I was buoyed by the sense of commitment, ingenuity and acknowledge that China is not only an important strategic and economic partner but that you are Australia's number one trading partner. The SCLAA is Australia’s largest association for professionals and practitioners working in the supply chain industry with its proven history, governance framework, established representation, strategic reach and affiliation with many Federal and State Diplomats, universities, business’ and organisations, both here and Overseas, it is timely that we join together to face the exciting opportunities ahead in an ever increasing globalised market-place. It has also been the SCLAA’s mission, through its collaboration with industry, to be the Association of choice for the advancement of the supply chain and logistics 18

industry both in Australia and China. It is imperative that we continue to showcase your great Nation and the strong economic benefits of working closely with you both in Australia and overseas. In addition, every sector and industry has a supply chain function and it is our goal to continue to advance the efficiencies and education in the sector and to ensure the safety and security to both our great nations. It is very clear and we today understand that the supply chain industry is the lifeblood of our economies. The supply chain adds $130 billion to the Australian economy and for every 1% increase in efficiency in the sector, GDP will be boosted by over 2 billion dollars a year. China is to top 50% of global GDP by 2040 and drive 60% of the world’s consumption and Australia has a great opportunity and responsibility to ensure our joint initiatives well into the future. Of the $130 billion added to our Australian economy, without China we understand that we would not be in as strong economic position we are in today. I was buoyed after writing to the Honourable Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of Australia on the importance of the Australia China relationship to receive a personalised letter back from our Prime Minister. Mr Morrison had discussions with President Xi Jinping during the G20 Leaders Summit in Japan in June, and Vice President Wang Qishan in mid October, that Australia and China were committed to building their relationship and strengthening cooperation on important shared interests. As Mr Morrison stated, the economic ties have continued to grow with two way goods and services trade reaching a record $214.6 billion last year. Chinese investment in Australia has also grown from negligible amounts 10 years ago to $40.1 billion in foreign investment in 2018. In 2019 this figure has continued to increase. It is also understood that the cooperation with China through a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership goes well beyond economic issues with the establishment of the National Foundation for Australia China Relations in March this year with a new consulate being opened in Shenyang. There is no doubt that China is the hub of world trade, home to some of the world’s largest companies, the fastest growing part of the internet and the engine of global consumption growth. In the months ahead, we look forward to working with the future growth and upward trajectory of China and we in Australia understand how China has put its own stamp on the world economy and Australia will clearly and jointly benefit from enhancing our alliances. We were delighted to be the first NGO Association to enter into a significant Memorandum of Understanding with The Australian International Trade Association (AITA) in the implementation of the “Belt and Road Australia-China

Supply Chain and Logistics Alliance on the 23rd November, 2018. The event was attended by a number of dignitaries, including the Secretary General of the Shanxi Electronic Commerce Association, the Asia Europe Exchange Chairman, the Vice President of the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, Mr Michael Guo (CEO AITA) and a number of senior company executives from both China and Australia. Since then we have continued to collaborate and work together on many initiatives to grow the economic prosperity and opportunity to our business communities. This culminated in two very significant and important trade visits to China this year. Since then the SCLAA has signed additional MOU’s with several China bodies and know that these alliances will be imperative to growing our Association's reach and driving opportunities to both Nations. I would also like to give special acknowledgement and thanks to Mr Michael Guo, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian International Trade Association, and his team for their cooperation and assistance but more importantly for not only assisting in bringing the formation of the Belt and Road Australia China Supply Chain and Logistics alliance to fruition but also for assisting in several MOU’s being signed and very successful trade delegations completed during 2019.

Our strong business relationship with China continues to advance and increase a broad platform of services including conferences, exhibitions, and business consultations, overseas trade visits, training programs to help enhance the partnerships with joining alliance members which include the participation of government departments, industrial associations, institutions and corporate enterprises. The supply chain and logistics industrial growth and transformation will continue to evolve into the next decade and beyond and I am sure that the enormous economic and strategic benefits this visit and alliance will ensure a long, successful and mutually beneficial business relationship. The future of the successful economic growth of China and Australia is key to our future. Thank you again to all our distinguished guests for your participation and support of the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia today. This again has been a great honour.

Australia continues to enhance its trade with China and this has culminated in numerous advancements in many areas including Agricultural, Health & Tourism, Pharmaceuticals, Technology, Education and Training and more importantly giveing us the information and insight to enhance supply chain professionals knowledge, many who are working in both Australia and China across the supply chain industry. We were delighted to sign the MOU with the Xi'an SubCouncil of CCPIT, and the Australian International Trade Association today and look forward to ongoing collaboration with you. This important milestone between our Associations will enhance the growing number of bodies who have already joined our strong alliance to prosper in our respective economies.

VIC/TAS Division

Kyle Rogers - VIC/TAS State President Greetings from SCLAA VIC / TAS. It has been another successful two months since our last newsletter. We held an exclusive members site tour of L’Oreal in South Dandenong where we saw their Order Storage Retrieval system and efficient warehouse operations. We also held an informative event on ‘Android in the Supply Chain’ at the Google offices in Melbourne in conjunction with several industry partners. As this is my final newsletter as State President of SCLAA VIC/TAS, I would like to humbly thank our members for the privilege in providing you with breakfast, thought leadership, site tours and networking events. I would also like to acknowledge the tireless work of the SCLAA committee that has supported me and made this such a successful year. I could not have done it without you guys! Congratulations to the incoming President, Stephen Lakey. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to the exciting SCLAA events in 2020. As SCLAA Vic looks to the new year, we welcome member feedback and any suggestions for events you would like to see. What’s next? VIC/TAS SCLAA are always striving to bring our members practical and thought-provoking opportunities for Supply Chain professionals. Keep an eye on the Calendar of Events on the SCLAA website for upcoming 2020 events.

The second presentation was from Google and the discussion went into the device admin side. We were shown how a device can have Apps that are company owned, while the user can still have personal Apps. We were then shown Zero touch enrollment, where a device can be set up out of the box. Lastly, we were shown how a device can use a shared profile for shift workers. Skywire then returned to the podium with a more detailed discussion of devices. We went through the evolution of rugged mobility devices. We then saw the innovation that is possible through Android devices such as measuring Apps, warehouse green screen to graphical Apps and voice picking Apps. We saw a few demos of devices in action including a zero touch enrollment and a green screen to GUI. Lastly, a case study for Toyota’s new parts DC in NSW was discussed.

Highlights This Issue Androd in Supply Chain - 23 September 2019 The SCLAA in conjunction with Industry partners met at Google’s Melbourne offices to discuss how Android is being used in the Supply Chain. After getting my colourful Google tag, I made my way to the mini lecture theatre where SCLAA members and technology experts, some of whom flew in from all around Australia, gathered to hear the series of talks on Android and how it can improve Supply Chain operations. The first presentation and introduction was from Skywire. We learnt about how Android has grown exponentially over the last few years, currently used in 2.5 Billion active devices, and how the enterprise version is currently used in handheld devices in warehouses. 23

SCLAA Newsletter December 2019

Honeywell gave a presentation of their mobility solution. We discussed some of the challenges Android has faced historically in terms of updates and multiple different versions. We saw some of the common devices that Honeywell deploys and we then heard some of the lessons learnt from Honeywell’s deployments. Lastly, Manhatten Associates gave their perspective on

VIC/TAS Division mobility devices. We saw some examples of warehouse dashboards that can be displayed on mobile devices covering KPIs such as priority receipts, cartons in QC, next day shipments etc. The event was both fascinating and informative. Thank you to all the speakers. It was exciting to see a practical case of how technology is transforming Supply Chains.

L'Oreal Site Tour - 16 October 2019 On October 16th, 15 SCLAA members had an exclusive tour of the L’Oreal warehouse in South Dandenong. We were fortunate enough to see how the world’s largest cosmetics company distributes product in Australia for their portfolio of 25 brands and tour their state-of-the-art operations. We began the afternoon with a safety brief and a background on L’Oreal’s 27,700 SQM facility by Con Vasilopoulos and his team. We discussed how changes driven by online retail are transforming the Supply Chain and how warehouse operations need to respond to compete in this new landscape. After this introduction, we put on our safety vest and headed to the warehouse floor which is maintained by 167 hardworking FTEs. Automation plays an important role in the L’Oreal warehouse and we got to see a Knapp OSR (Order Storage Retrieval) unit in action. We learnt that the slower moving SKUs are stored in the OSR and got to see how quickly orders are fulfilled using this technology. We discussed the solution L’Oreal uses for fast moving SKUs and saw how shipping box sizes are automatically customized to

minimize cubic meters for efficient freight movements. While I did not find any discount face cream which my mother asked for, we were treated to some delicious scones and afternoon tea at the conclusion of the tour. Thanks again to Con Vasilopoulos and his team for a fascinating tour of their facility and for supporting the SCLAA.

Why did you choose Supply Chain? Ever since my childhood, I was always curious about why the packet of chips made in my home country would cost the same as the one imported from abroad. Even while helping my father in his tourism business, I was amazed to see why we need to stock up trekking equipment and gears that would last just 2-3 seasons. All these little experiences made me what to understand the importance of supply chain and learn how to achieve both effectiveness and efficiency in any work.

after my degree and there I came across the supply chain department. I realized that Supply Chain plays the most crucial role in any business and it can either make or break a company. I decided that I would pursue my career in this industry and opted to do masters in supply chain and logistics at RMIT.

What is the proudest moment of your career? I have just started my career journey and I want to thank everyone who has guided me and helped me reach my potential. I am new to Melbourne and I was given an internship opportunity at La Marzocco after recognizing my passion for Supply Chain and hence it is very special and one of my proudest moments.

What are your career aspirations? I am starting of my career in SCM and there is so much to learn. However, I aspire to work up the ladder and see myself in a leadership position in a large supply chain and logistics firm and to be an important part of SCLAA. I also dream of inspiring students like myself in the coming future.
