SCLAA National Chairwoman - Amanda O'Brien Amanda O'Brien is the National Chairwoman of the SCLAA. Amanda is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.

Over the last few months I have attended several briefings on the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy. The Australian Government is developing a national freight and supply chain strategy to increase the productivity and efficiency of Australia's freight supply chain for which submissions closed on 28th July, 2017. It requires not one body but all associated bodies to come together to discuss initiatives that will increase our opportunities in Australia’s freight and logistics industry.

Aurizon is the largest coal transporter in Australia, operating in Queensland and the Hunter Valley (NSW). It also operates and manages approximately 2,300 km of rail tracks across Queensland. Asciano also owns and operates a range of transport infrastructure including container terminals in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle, and other ports across Australia. It also owns rail freight business Pacific National which is one of the two dominant national rail providers.

The commencement by the Australian Government to consult with the industry is encouraging and will help to enhance the efficiency of supply chains. This active consultation assessing all modes of transport will assist in improving the strategies the government will no doubt implement in the future. Australia’s freight task is expected to grow significantly in the next few years and it will undoubtedly have implications for the performance of our national economy. Our nation’s freight logistics industry represents 8.9% of Australia’s GDP and employs 1.2 million Australians. A 1% increase in supply chain efficiency will deliver a $2bn benefit to the national economy. Associations across Australia should be working together to drive improvements in this sector this is not a time for isolation of ideas but a managed collaborative approach to inclusion of all sectors stakeholders and individuals who are currently working and will work in this sector for decades to come.

Strategies for the future will entail tactical procurement challenges and predictably continued global trade uncertainty. One of the most significant challenges is developing and filling talent gaps in the industry. Even with the current downturn due to the mining boom in the supply chain space experienced professionals in the supply chain are in short supply. Training in this space is becoming more important than ever before but there is a significant gap between senior management and on the ground operators. Industry supply chain networks are under scrutiny and there will be continuous analysis over the next decade.

There is no doubt that supply chain industry is experiencing increased volatility and the economic outlook enforces the need for organizations to be prepared and vigilant in 2017. A challenging year is ahead with cost of rising inbound and service costs means that multi nationals will survive but evolution and innovation will become even more important to SME’s working in the same economic space. A slowdown in the global economy and a reduced amount of traffic from Australia’s mines are hitting two of the largest companies in the transport and logistics sector, Aurizon and Asciano. However, because the Federal Government is still investing in the coal mining projects that feed the transport sector, larger companies such as these two (with more than 10 percent of the market share) will be able to survive. 2

SCLAA Newsletter August 2017

Aurizon has a challenging outlook for the next few years. This is especially because its coal and iron ore haulage division will experience a decrease in traffic due to the closure of mine sites such as, Yancoal’s Donaldson mine in the Hunter Valley and Peabody’s Wilkie Creek mine near Dalby (QLD), resulting in less revenue.

Turbulence in the transportation industry in the domestic market is apparent with change accelerating. Only this week part of the former McAleese transport group, including Perth based Australian Road Express was put into receivership. Australian Road Express employed 180 people at its headquarters in Perth and depots in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Founded in 1991 it was formerly known as WA Freight Group and covered WA Freightlines, Jolly’s Transport and Jetstyle Express. Its collapse again underlines the tough times being experienced by transport companies, particularly in WA where the softer economy is adding extra stress. In the current environment it is not only the larger companies feeling the winds of change in the market-place so appraisals of business will continue to be assessed in the domestic and global supply chain arenas. Investment in technology will be fundamental to stay viable and to improve processes and efficiencies in order to increase profit margins for already dissipated margins. Automation is required as analytical driven decision making methods come under scrutiny in the internet

of things particularly in a management decision support vendor community. The end-to-end supply chain means that business intelligence in B2B networks are being used to fuel the speed at which decision making and business intelligence engines are working at and the flow of information end-to-end. Amazon and Alibaba will continue to strive for dominance in a global online retail environment and try to adapt to local markets to take more opportunity to pick up the online marketing dollars and revenue. This brings me to South Australia which has also had its fair share of economic instability but the great thing is that there is Government investment there with a $50million dollar upgrade to Adelaide Airport. The Supply Chain & Logistics Association is partnering with the10th Annual South Australian Major Projects Conference as the state invests in key infrastructure projects in the education, defence and transport sectors. A new school in Adelaide will be the state’s first vertical school, in close proximity to the Park Lands, Universities, the Botanic Gardens and the Zoo, among other key Adelaide attractions along North Terrace. Turner and Townsend Thinc, Associate Director, Nathan Hawkes profiles the project which builds on the government’s infrastructure investment to create a forecasted 200 new jobs for SA. Retailer AGL is building the world’s largest Virtual Power Plant (VPP) by increasing storage capacity of solar batteries installed across Adelaide. The $20 million power plant is a public-private investment between AGL and the federal Australian Renewable Energy Agency. AGL Executive General Manger in New Energy, Elisabeth Brinton addresses the benefits of the VPP project to both customers and the electricity market. The flagship Future Submarine Program (SEA1000) is expected to form the backbone of defence in Australia, delivering an affordable and sustainable submarine capability of critical strategic importance to the nation’s maritime security planning. Defence SA Chief Executive Andy Keough will illuminate developments on the Future Submarines program. Works on Adelaide Airport see the airport revitalized with a $50 million, 165-room hotel expansion, creating approximately 350 jobs during construction. By 2044 the terminal’s size is expected to triple to accommodate a growing international market. Executive General Manager, Planning and Infrastructure, Adelaide Airport, Vince Scanlon, profiles these developments which will enhance Adelaide Airport’s standing as a major infrastructure and economic asset in South Australia. Alongside traditional major projects such as the Northern Connector Project and the Adelaide Festival Plaza Redevelopment, the Conference will also profile smart ICT in Infrastructure, smart city initiatives and driverless car technology. With budgets tight at a federal, state and local level, strategic procurement has never been more important and this Summit will bring together some of the most exciting and innovative

case studies – locally and internationally – with keynote presentations from leading public sector CPO’s and interactive panel discussions to address the most significant challenges procurement managers face today. Also held this month in WA a seminar on Making MRO Supply Chains Relevant in a Digital Economy kindly sponsored by Michael Page where exploration of the transformational journey involving advanced planning & scheduling, innovation, disruptive technology, demand driven planning, asset management, predictive analytics, supply chain performance metrics, network design, process improvement and not least the human side of change management towards a world class MRO supply chain where presenters Mike Lomman (General Manager Demand Chain), Indrasen Naidoo (Director of Supply Chain for Roy Hill and Karen Livey (Past President of ASCI WA) gave insightful presentations covering these vast topics, just to name a few. Also coming up is the Axis Melbourne Breakfast Seminar at Sofitel Melbourne on Collins where Virgin Australia will present their experience implementing an Early Intervention and Onsite Physiotherapy program. You will also hear how highly performing workplaces manage Work-Related Injuries. The program will include two keynote speakers: Aimee Geronimo of Virgin Australia Airlines presenting how they best implement and achieve early intervention in their wide-spread and diverse workforce and David Brentnall, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, will share tips on why early intervention for work-related injuries is good for business and the 5 principles of how highly performing workplaces get it right. The SCLAA has also partnered Akolade for the upcoming Supply Chain Planning & Innovation Conference to be held from 29th August- 31st August in Melbourne. With supply chains constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing demands of omni-channel customers, how do you balance efficiency, performance and cost while investing in the right technology and tools required to succeed? The Supply Chain Planning & Innovation Summit tackles these challenges combining best practices, and thought leadership case studies with interactive discussions for problem solving, idea exchanges and debate on the hottest topics in end-to-end supply chain planning and technology innovation. With so many events on make sure you mark the 2017 ASCLA awards in your calendar to be held on 17th November at the iconic Luna Park. Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM of the truck trips are really necessary. How many trucks are only partly loaded, or perhaps even empty? By the way train lines travels in parallel with the Hume Freeway for much of the distance. On my observation, the rail system is deficient and unattractive to potential users. What is being done about that?

David Doherty OAM is a past President and Life Member of the SCLAA and a highly regarded logistician. Send your Straight Talk feedback and comments to davdoh1@optusnet.com.au

I am suffering at the moment. A sort of mental anguish is threatening to overwhelm me. Have you ever felt like that? Of course, when these things hit we just tighten our belts, get out the old stiff upper lip, and soldier on. That’s right, isn’t it? In my case it is nothing serious. Just an annoyance from ambiguity, political correctness gone mad, unnecessary complexity, cowardly politics, failure to address real poverty and disadvantage in our communities, and rampant waste. What really set me off was the decision by a Municipal Council in Victoria to cancel Australia Day! There are other things, but the above issues are enough to provoke reasonable people to take some action. Where do you stand? Are you willing to stand up for Australia and Australians regardless of their faith, ethnicity, sexuality, political persuasion, or disadvantage? Supply Chains are now genuinely global. They are borderless beyond any imagining when Supply Chain concepts first appeared. The explosion and/or disruption emanating from technologies innovations have allowed a reinvention of business models across the globe. However, the real core of Supply Chains is still people! You and me and the people we work with and serve are the guts of Supply Chains. Direct to consumer concepts with different procurement processes and freight models are built for improving the effectiveness for end users.

End users are people! As I see it we are becoming obsessed with making things complicated and difficult at the expense of effectiveness, efficiency and genuine value creation. Complicated doesn’t equate to smart! Supply Chains and Logistics yearn for the simplest, leanest and most practicable solutions. Time for our profession to rekindle the flame that established the supply chain models in the first place.

The flame flickering.

is

Can it be reignited and nurtured? Governments and Academia have important strategic roles to play. We must pursue them relentlessly and vigorously to take up their responsibilities. Most important is the responsibility to serve the community. Winning, losing or becoming famous is not the role we want politicians, governments, councils, or academics to play. We want them to serve the interests of all our communities. They must focus on creating an environment in which we can all prosper. New forms of courageous collaborations will be important platforms for future success. Pretend partnerships are often evident in dealing with very big organisations. It is time for them to show the way in creating “next practice” logistics and supply chains. What will the next generation aspire to and expect from our leaders? I live in a rural area these days. My regular trips to the City (some 65kms) along the Hume Freeway put me in the “demolition derby” experience that Truckers negotiate continuously. I often wonder how many

Genuine freight collaborations will eventually become the norm. Genuine new forms of business and service provider collaborations will also become the norm. Sooner rather than later would be a good idea. Collaboration is talked about at nearly every conference. In my view, we are individually and collectively still struggling and reticent to fully embrace and implement value generating collaboration. Governments are still in the dark ages on collaboration. My rantings in this column have helped to alleviate my anguish. I am hopeful leaders across every segment in our country will not limit themselves with outdated concepts and mental game playing. Building constructively for the next generation of Supply Chain exponents is mandatory. We are all responsible for that.

Building communities we can be proud of with honest inclusiveness and value sharing are also mandatory. We are all responsible for that too. Installing real leaders in Parliaments and Academic institutions is essential. We are all responsible for that. Elect and appoint real leaders, not pretenders. Take up your responsibilities now. As Donald Trump might say,” Let us make Supply Chains, Logistics and Australia great again!”

“The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership”. Harvey Firestone (Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company)

Planning from the Edge Fred Baumann, GVP, Global Industry Strategy

Digitalization is bringing big changes to the supply chain, yet there’s such a hype around it, that it can cause confusion. Supply chain digitalization, which is the process of using technology advancements linked with physical and digital assets to redefine and reimagine current business practices, can be used to improve the customer experience and create a substantial competitive advantage. Everywhere you turn, data is being generated, captured and consumed. Time spent on smartphones and tablets is on the rise, and most people get their news and information online via social media outlets. These clicks, views and comments can be aggregated and analyzed to uncover trends and insights, which help improve the customer experience and create a competitive advantage. However, the question is how are companies using this data? According to the SCM World Future of Supply Chain 2016 survey (https://jda.com/knowledge-center/collateral/scm-digitaltransformation-directive-report), the use of social media as a planning input has grown substantially. In just four years, survey respondents indicated they’ve increased how they’re using this type of data within their businesses: •

Source of real-time customer feedback (73 percent in 2016 vs. 56 percent in 2012)

Potential supply disruptions (59 percent in 2016 vs. 41 percent in 2012)

Inform product enhancements/innovation priorities (58 percent in 2016 vs. 46 percent in 2012)

Shed light on social/environmental/labor practices at a country and company level (52 percent in 2016 vs. 33 percent in 2012)

Help forecast demand for “hot” products (51 percent in 2016, vs. 39 percent in 2012)

Social media is just one of several types of data that has the potential to provide valuable insights into your business operations. Sensor-enabled devices and equipment, along with the Internet of Things (IOT), enable you to receive data, tracking everything from usage, movement and condition, across all nodes of your supply chain.

This includes machines on the factory floor, delivery trucks in transit, pallets on the warehouse floor, point of purchase, and in some cases, ultimate consumption. The challenge is figuring out how to use this information and integrate it within your planning and execution processes. SCM World’s The Digital Transformation Directive Report introduces a framework that companies can follow to approach these types of digital transformations. The report suggests viewing your planning applications in three groups: the core, process and edge. The report recommends the following:

“From a planning perspective, the end game involves digesting the right information from the Edge, where things like social media analysis, third-party risk information data services and machine data from production equipment and delivery vehicles are generated. Planning, which starts at the Core and represents the most business-centric view of supply-demand balancing, must select and analyze data from these Edge applications, while maintaining reliable ongoing feedback cycles with Process Applications that run the business.” The view of a connected planning landscape, which covers both strategic-level planning, such as network design, and more granular planning, such as daily production scheduling, underscores the importance of data governance. The ability to sense changes in demand and supply based on information or analysis of data gathered from the edge, and have that data incorporated into your planning processes can make it easier for you to connect to your consumers personalized needs, while reducing costs and waste across the supply chain simultaneously. More importantly, consuming information from the edge doesn’t require a wholesale replacement of your core supply chain planning and execution systems. More advanced companies are augmenting and enhancing their processes and solutions to digest the signals from the edge to improve agility and ultimately drive competitive advantage. Pragmatic leadership is needed in the near term to enable this transition.

Is your supply chain ready?

Successful CPL Applicants Overview - About Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) This National program was officially launched in 2007. The CPL program has become the benchmark of excellence for measuring capability and proficiency within the profession of logistics and supply-chain management. The CPL was developed and is managed by a committee comprising CILTA and the SCLAA. The Certified Practising Logistician qualification that will grow over coming years to become the standard for recognition of professional competence in the industry. Logistics, as a term now embraces warehousing, freight, transportation and distribution, through to supply chain management. Gone are the days when transportation, warehousing, distribution and materials management were seen as separate or distinct functions and disciplines. The CPL is recognised globally and is also available for International upgrade with Asian Pacific Logistics Federation. Today, professionalism of a high standard is required to manage these complex, disparate functions in a seamless and integrated supply chain mode with a clear understanding of the need to track the physical goods/services flow, financial flow, and, of course, information flow. Logistics is a profession that is dealing with a freight task that is expected to double over the next decade. The demand for professionals, technical experts and executives will continue to rise. Australia’s logisticians, along with an efficient and effective land, sea and air infrastructure, will contribute to the future export success of this nation. For more information on CPL, please see the CPL page of the SCLAA website.

Keith Bollen - I have been in full-time Warehousing and Logistics roles managing inventory, budgets and people in businesses of varying sizes for 25 years. Whilst studying part-time I have attained a Diploma of Business Management, Graduate Certificate of Business and been on many executive development courses with inspirational thought leaders across different disciplines. In the last 10 years I have been a General Manager and Operations Manager in distribution companies for AMA Group Ltd until recently joining Integrated Industrial as a Warehouse Manager. Joining the SCLAA and attaining CPL certification provides me with information about what world’s best practice means and acknowledges my skills in the SCL industry. The opportunities to communicate with people in the industry who I may never meet makes being a part of this association an important part of my commitment to continual learning.

David Mair - I am an executive with extensive experience across Supply Chain, Customer Service and Organizational Governance. I have enjoyed managing teams within both large and small corporations, controlling strategic supply chain driven outcomes with the aim of delighting the customer. I bring a strong customer focus to supply chain due to my early career in sales and customer service at both retail and wholesale levels. This customer drive and my exposure to tools such as Coaching and Disc motivate my passion in building high performing teams through empowerment and aligned goals. I am thrilled about the CPL certification as I have always had a hunger for continuous learning and this will ensure I have a structure to benchmark my career and personal development moving forward.

Kylie Hirst - Over 12 years of experience working for both the Department of Defence and Industry producing successful Commercial, Logistics and Project Management outcomes within complex Acquisition and Sustainment environments. Possesses a keen understanding of Defence organisational needs, combined with exceptional communication and coordination skills. Coupled with her qualifications and experience, she feels the certification will provide her with the edge and attraction when pursuing future works.

Scott Hales - Squadron Leader Scott Hales’ 15 years of service with the Royal Australian Air Force has provided a broad range of experiences and knowledge across many and varied Logistics roles. Notably, he has provided service within Joint Logistics Command in the fields of Warehousing and Distribution, Supply Governance, and Procurement, where he was awarded a Commendation for excellence. He also served at No 1 Air Mobility Wing, RAF Lyneham, UK, providing specialist Air Mobility and Air Transportation services for the UK Ministry of Defence. While working in the Over the Horizon Radar Systems Program Office as the Integrated Logistics Support Manager throughout JP2077 Phases 5, 6 and 7 SQNLDR Hales was awarded another Commendation for excellence. SQNLDR Hales is currently a member of the Commercial team in the Joint Strike Fighter Division, Capability Acquisition and Support Group, supporting acquisition of Australia’s new Air Combat capability, the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. Squadron Leader Hales enjoys opportunities to expand his knowledge across the multi-disciplinary aspects of Logistics and acknowledges that Air Force Logisticians are very similar to industry counterparts – networking and continual improvement are essential to success. Squadron Leader Hales has completed an Executive Level Masters of Enterprise, complementing several Diplomas and certificates in the fields of Material Logistics, Procurement and Business Management. Squadron Leader Hales is also a Certified Practicing Logistician through the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia and is excited about the professional networking, exposure to

ACT/ SNSW

Division Report

Gary Pearce - ACT/SNW President In June the ACT and Southern NSW Division were privileged to be invited to look over the operations of Bottles of Australia. Bottles of Australia (BoA) is Australia’s leading sports drink bottle and bottle carrier manufacturer suppling clients throughout Australia and globally established 1989. They specialise in custom-printed sports drink bottles for promotions, corporate events, sporting brands, schools and universities, governments, retail and sporting clubs. As a global supplier for Puma Germany they export to countries around the world. BoA are well positioned to supply orders of hundreds of thousands or small team orders of just twenty bottles. Flexibility is their key. BoA are continually researching products and processes to supply the best quality products they can. Working with the University of Canberra and Sports Science areas, along with the use of independent international testing standards, ensures that all the plastics are BPA Free and surpass global food standards. As a WRAP Compliant Manufacturer, social compliance is also important to BoA. They are also ACTSmart Accredited for recycling and environmental management. Even though member attendance was not as good as we had hoped for this site visit, everyone who did attend enjoyed the experience and came away with a positive opinion of BoA. Our sincere thanks to Anton Pemmer, his wife Rosemary, and all the BoA staff.

SCLAA Newsletter August 2017

At the end of June we held our quarterly committee meeting. As usual, the issues discussed were many and varied. We focussedn strategies to grow our membership and to improve active participation within the Division. We recognise this will be a challenge within our Division with limited opportunities in a predominately Government environment, but we will work with these challenges in an attempt to obtain value for all of our members. Another challenge identified at our committee meeting is the relatively low profile of the SCLAA in our region, and again we are working with this; one innovation is the SCLAA Bumper Stickers which we are distributing among members and other interested parties. As a committee, we continue to look for future site visits to create interest and networking opportunities. We all come from different backgrounds, and by increasing and diversifying our membership, this background and breadth of experience will become more expansive. By providing a range of networking opportunities for like-minded career logisticians, we hope to improve involvement, participation and learning within the Division. We welcome, input and attendance from our members – in this way, we can all learn from the collective experiences, knowledge and stories that we can share with fellow members.

Focus on Committee Members and Members, Mentors and Mentees Jesse Wilson | eCommerce Consultant | SCLAA Thought Leadership Lead What is your current occupation? Working on projects in the ecommerce space and freelance consulting :

Why did you join SCLAA?

Giving back is really important to me. I felt like joining the SCLAA would be a great way to contribute to a really important community and develop relationships with other fantastic people in the industry. The SCLAA is in an exciting space at the moment - we have a passionate team of volunteers and are working on some great initiatives to benefit the broader Supply Chain and Logistics community!

Why did you choose supply chain? It doesn't matter what product or service you sell, logistics (physical or digital) ALWAYS plays a part in the process and will therefore be essential. What is the proudest moment of your career? It’s not my professional career but for me my backpacking adventures was an amazing achievement. 14 countries in 4 months by myself. I would do it again in a heartbeat! What are your career aspirations? It's pretty simple, I want to make sure that by the end of my career (life) the world is

a much better place.

Michael Kemeny | Director Sales and Engineering ANZ | KNAPP What is your current occupation? Director Sales and Engineering ANZ KNAPP Why did you join SCLAA? o get information about trends and news in the world of logistics. Meet likeminded people and develop a network. Participate in discussions about supply chain and logistics topics and to share my knowledge with other logistic 'heads'.

Why did you choose supply chain? t start it was more an accidental decision. I come from an IT background and developed software and integrated our software into customer projects. And curiosity drove me to want to learn more about the whole logistic and supply chain business. From analysing the current status to improving processes and warehouses and the whole supply chain of a client. And because every project is different and a new challenge, I guess that's the main reason for me to still be in logistics and supply chain management. What is the proudest moment of your career? I would say, finishing successfully a 4 year master study in SW Engineering and Internet Technology (which occupied all my Wednesday, Thursday evenings from 1800 to 2200, all Fridays from 14002200 and every Saturday from 0900 - 18:00), in combination with my normal full time job. In these 4 years I had essentially no private life and all my holidays I took in the company where used to learn for bigger exams. So not giving in and working through these 4 years made me really proud, even more than winning the one or other multi-million dollar project. What are your career aspirations? I'm quite happy with what I'm doing at the moment in developing the business for KNAPP in Australia. Help customers with their issues in their supply chain and warehouse logistics. So I would say my career aspiration is to get the business here to a stage where I personally can spend more time with my kids and my wife .

Vertical Talent are proud National sponsors of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia.

My role is diverse and gives me the opportunity to meet a completely varied range of people. Some are good, some bad and some are just plain amazing. I had the pleasure of meeting with Amanda O’Brien, the National Chairwoman of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (yes, an absolute mouthful!) this week – to say I left our chat feeling optimistic would be putting it mildly. When most people outside of the industry think about the supply chain, they envisage dirty trucks, colourful van drivers and warehouses stacked to the roof with “stuff”. They also wouldn’t be wrong in assuming that it is rather male dominated. To say that Amanda has achieved something pretty special by gaining this pinnacle role in the industry would be a gross understatement. As well as this, she also runs her own freight business, follows the Melbourne Storm and juggles parent teacher interviews / sports days with her family. This “chat” lasted longer than we both accounted for but was well worth it. To hear someone talk so passionately about something, to see the hunger in their eyes, to hear a disruptor and influencer just giving it to you straight is fantastic to witness. I only hope I managed to credibly keep up!

Why am I relaying this to the world of LinkedIn and my connections? A few reasons really. Firstly, have some faith that this Chair is doing something positive for an industry that needs to constantly evolve to modern work practice and efficiency. Secondly, as with Amanda’s business (XtremeFreight) which is an Australian Trusted Trader, the customer is still king and your business should always be focused on that relationship, not just what works for you. Finally, never ever underestimate your own power to invoke change, no matter what level you are at. It’s rewarding when you leave a meeting feeling energized and for that, I thank Amanda for being herself and not compromising on her own personal morals and values in the face of adversity. Watch this space; I see more great things ahead for Supply Chain in Australia….I’m thrilled to be associated with the SCLAA and this journey. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/my-meeting-chair-tom-key

This Award recognises and acknowledges outstanding achievements and contribution by an individual currently engaged across the supply chain industr y. Persons nominated for this most prestigious award will be leaders and will have made significant change to the way a supply chain is managed and improved either academically, physically or technologically. Originally awarded in 1987 and dedicated to Mike Munns, FAIMM, this award remains a cornerstone of SCLAA’s commitment to recognising and promoting the importance of the supply chain industry and its people to continuously improving organisational strength and growth.

Brian Lynn - WA State President

The highlight of the year to date for the SCLAA (WA) has been the Roy Hill event at Crown on 26th July. There was a fabulous turnout of members and associates of multiple associations for the joint ASCI/SCLAA and SCLAA and Michael Page sponsored sundowner. Following opening introductions from Steven Murdoch and Brian Lynn (WA Presidents of ASCI and SCLAA respectively), and Ryan Lanzon (Associate Director, Michael Page) the main event began. Mike Lomman (GM Demand Chain) and Indrasen Naidoo (Director Supply Chain) delivered a polished joint presentation on Roy Hill's System Thinking and Making MRO Supply Chains Relevant in a Digital Economy, and Karen Livey, an International Keynote Speaker followed up with an introduction to 'Managing change with a Neuroscience lens. What was self-evident to all attending was the shared commitment within the Roy Hill team to the corporate objective to do things differently and better. Core to this was the concept of an Integrated Operating Model, supported by cutting edge technology (SAP 4HANA).

started, questions flowed all presenters were generous with their time. hanks to all involved for a fantastic session! In June, Instant Waste hosted an extremely enjoyable site visit at their Bayswater recycling plant. Jake Hickey (WA State Resource Development Manager) spoke passionately about the economics and technology behind recycling, explaining that construction waste is the majority of what the site currently handles. It was fascinating to then view the plant from the observation gallery and to witness the multiple processes through which waste passes in order to separate it into its constituent parts, some of which have actual commercial value. Next to come will a site visit to Richgro in Jandakot on August 30th; another joint ASCI/SCLAA event. There a still places and sponsorship opportunities available for the Annual Golf Day at the Vines on 20th October and exciting announcements due shortly regarding the 2016 WA Supply Chain and Logistics Awards; a joint initiative with CILTA. Queensland

Division Report

Matt Guthrie Interim Vice President The Queensland branch of the SCLAA have commenced a plan to grow the membership across the next 12 months. The committee steering the State are focusing on initiatives they expect will achieve three core objectives – •

to grow the value that members enjoy,

to increase the strength of events the State runs and

to aggressively grow the membership base that enjoy these.

Matthew Guthrie chaired the meeting and remarked, “There’s a lot of energy here, and there are gaps in the market that SCLAA can fill. We’re uniquely positioned to provide value to those working in supply chain and logistical roles, and to the companies that depend on these factors.” Guest contributor, Stephen Johnson of Strategy and Action, agreed. “This team recognises the value of Value, and seems enthusiastic about creating and delivering it.” The Queensland committee is accepting approaches from interested people who wish to join and participate in developing and running initiatives and participating in a very big year ahead.

PLUCKY FREIGHT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE COMPANY iCOS LIVE STEPS OUT ON AUSTRALIAN SOIL The owners of Queensland’s Scuzztrans Container Transport, Andrew (Scuzzy) McSweeney and his wife, Helen, have been so impressed with the results and benefits they’re receiving from the container transport management software they installed, they invited the New Zealand-based owner of the software company to join them in Scuzztrans premises at 1570 Lytton Road, Hemmant. Scuzztrans, which won the 2016 Queensland Supply Chain Award, attribute much of their success to the Kiwi-designed software iCOS LIVE and are quick to champion the program as having transformed their business, giving them huge cost savings which has enabled them to grow their operation. Kathy Ross, CEO, founder and owner of iCOS LIVE, took up the McSweeney’s offer and the iCOS LIVE office, the first on Australian soil, was officially launched with a well-attended event on August 11.

SCLAA Newsletter August 2017

Representatives from Teletrac Navman, iCOS LIVE’s integrated partner, attended the opening day along with NZTE (New Zealand trade and enterprise representatives Stuart Kerr and Penny Flynn, both based in Queensland. Also attending was Lynette Gray, author of the book “Women in Work Boots”. Ross’s son, David, also crossed the Tasman for the auspicious occasion. Like the McSweeneys, Lynette Gray well knows the benefits of iCOS LIVE having used the program when she owned her refrigerated freight business with husband, Trevor. “It gave us back time, we were able to have a life,” said Lynette. “We hadn’t had a family holiday for 14 years before installing this software. I would recommend it to any other family owned business.” Over the past 12 months, this small New Zealand company has branched out taking on the supply-chain industry on the highways and byways across Australia with iCOS LIVE’s software already influencing Australia’s massive trucking industry.

“We know all about family-owned businesses as we are one themselves,” said

Kathy Ross referring to the days she and her children worked as a start-up.

“Nothing has changed. We’ve built the company up to a team of 14 people. We’re still as passionate and love helping people and making a difference.” iCOS LIVE was winner of the 2016 Road Transport of New Zealand Award for outstanding contribution to the transport industry for innovation and change. They were also the highly recommended and runner-up as an international supplier in the 2016 Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards.

“It’s transport and logistics management made easy or, as many of our Queensland customers say, ‘too easy’,” says Kathy Ross. “It’s all about getting out from under the paper, having total transparency in one’s business, reducing cost such as resources, and plugging revenue leakage.” The Queensland base, for Kathy Ross and iCOS LIVE, is a further step in the upward progress of this plucky little Kiwi company which now has an Australian base to take on the supply-chain industry on the highways and byways across Australia. The company is making significant inroads into transport both in New Zealand and Australia and the opportunity to have an Australian base was a major step to broadening iCOS LIVE’s user base.

Rob O’Byrne, Founder and MC of the event has said that, “Whilst there are many good Supply Chain Conferences available, I wanted to bring something to the industry that would meet a very different need. Low cost, high value with small group interaction and with an additional focus of helping those in need. Our first event in 2016 was a resounding success and really struck a chord with delegates and our Guest Experts alike. Not only did everyone leave saying how valuable the event was in terms of learning, but that it was fun too! So now it’s an annual fixture on our calendar. I was hoping that this 2017 event would ensure that we reach our next charity milestone of 4 million micro giving impacts. But I think we’ll reach it well before the event. Maybe 4.5 million impacts will be our event target? For details, videos of last year and registration, just go to: http://www.supplychainleadersinsights.com.au/ Use Promo code SCLAA
