Year 6 Curriculum

Art and Design: Make my voice heard
Children will develop skills in using different art styles, exploring effects with tools, understanding and applying chiaroscuro, and creating symbolic and expressive drawings. It encourages children to form their own opinions about art, understand the impact of techniques, and convey messages through their artwork.
PSHE: Our topic for this half term is 'Feelings and Emotions' with a focus on 'Worry'. We will explore what emotions are, identify how we can reduce our feeling of worry, learn how to support others, and recognise that our actions affect others.

Computing: This half term our focus is online safety. We will spend time thinking about the impact and consequences of sharing online and explore strategies that will help to keep us protected online.
History: This half term we will be learning about The Great War. We will examine the events that led to the outbreak of war, the use of propaganda and what life was like in the trenches for soldiers. The unit ends by learning about how the war came to an end and the Treaty of Versailles.

Reading & Homework
One of our key priorities is developing reading. We strongly believe reading underpins our children's successes across the curriculum.
The requirement of all children is to read at least three times per week at home. This can either be to an adult or they can read independently.
Each child will be issued with a home/school planner for parents to record their child’s reading each week. This will be checked in school.
In Year 6, children are permitted to write a comment in the diary themselves, however, we ask that parents still initial/sign to acknowledge the comment.
Homework is set weekly on a Friday to be returned by Wednesday the following week.
Weekly maths and English Reading 3x weekly Spelling Frame TTRs

In their home/school planners, the children have the login information for ‘Times Table Rockstars’ (TTRS) & ‘Spelling Frame’
These are two programmes that school have subscribed to, for children to access with their learning both within and outside the classroom.

Throughout the year, we use Google Classroom so children will also have this login information in their planners.
In addition to the weekly homework/reading, we encourage the children to access these apps (as well as others) as frequently as possible.

(Special Educational needs and disabilities)
If you have any concerns about your child’s progress or well-being, the first point of call will always be to talk to the class teacher.
From this point, it may be that further provision is required, which the class teacher will organise and implement.
After this period of time, if there are still concerns, the SEND team (Mrs Tudor and Mrs Sutton) are always there to support and offer guidance for the children.

Children can wear summer uniform or winter uniform in September, but Winter uniform starts officially after October half term. Please ensure that all white shirts are tucked in.

At Churchtown, we use the app SeeSaw to offer a window into the classroom. Staff in school use SeeSaw to journal the children’s learning and parents have the opportunity to access their child’s individual portfolio.
Your child will have already been transferred into their new class, so you will already be able to view their learning journey so far! Please remember the Code of Conduct which you signed when allowing access to SeeSaw last academic year, regarding the use of these images. If you wish to see this again, please ask at the school office.
Behaviour on the playground
• We can’t use the climbing equipment before the start of the school day
• Think – is there enough room for me or do I need to wait my turn?
• Only climb on things that are designed to be climbed on
• Use kind hands
• Use kind words
• Respect the equipment - we want to make sure the equipment is well looked after so we can all enjoy the playground for a long time to come!
