Be a part of history 1940s

Because of wartime rationing there was some relaxation of school regulations, particularly in regard to uniform. Each purchase of clothing required 'coupons', so the wearing of uniforms was flexible.

The Tuck Shops were murder! There were two hatches, each with a triangular wedge of clamouring pupils surging into them. I was usually too timid to broach such a yelling clawing melee, but once in a while a bolt of bravery towards the end of the 15 minute Break would earn me a 7p bag of chicken flavoured crisps.

Our Ashton Sixth Form has its roots in the nonconformist Independent Congregational school at Albion.

You can still see the old school bells and segregated ‘Boys’ and ‘Girls’ entrances today.

There were lots of beehive haircuts around, and the girls' cloakrooms downstairs used to stink of cheap hair lacquer. Very black eyeliner and pale lips were in with panstick to cover the Clearasil - the aim was to wear as much makeup as possible and still escape Miss Berry's notice.

The college library and resource centre provide excellent facilities for sixth form students. The book stock sits at over 20,000 volumes, mainly works of an academic nature covering the whole range of courses available, but also including a large number of books of general interest and a collection of fiction, both classic and modern. Resource material includes cassettes, tapes, filmstrips, slides and notes designed to add an extra dimension to any course of study.

XL Programme We continue to attract some of the most academically able students to our college each year and we deliver specialist support as part of our unique XL Programme.

Students are stretched and challenged to ensure they are well equipped to compete at the highest level when they leave us.

Over 90% of our XL cohort progress each year to higher education with over 70% progressing to some of the most competitive universities in the country.

Our Realising Aspirations Programme is open to all students and aims to introduce what it is like to study a particular subject at university through a number of taster lectures and seminars delivered by university academics. This unique programme has benefited many students in getting ready to move from college to university.

What can I study?

We’re in the top 10% of colleges nationally for progress.

STUDY PROGRAMMES A-Level

Students study 3 or 4 A-Levels which are predominately 100% examined courses.

Students must achieve a minimum of 2 x GCSE B grades, 2 x GCSE C grades, plus a 5 in GCSE English Language and 4 in GCSE Maths.

Mixed Study

You can choose to study one or more BTEC Certificates alongside A-Levels. This gives students the flexibility to have both exam and coursework assessment in their study programme. You must achieve a minimum of 3 x GCSE C grades, plus a 5 in GCSE English Language and 4 in GCSE Maths.

3D Design & Technology

Criminology is an exciting new course aimed at developing your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of crimes and work done in the criminal justice system. The course incorporates elements of psychology, law and sociology, covering a wide variety of crime-related topics including biological and sociological theories of criminality, processes used for law making and media representations of crime, amongst others.
