To ensure that as many students as possible pass their GCSE English examinations on or above target

Objectives: • To give you an outline of the GCSE English course • To explain why grade 5 is so important this year • To inform you of the help which is available from LSA • To discuss how parents can best support their child

For some pupils, getting their GCSE English will feel like they’ve got a mountain to climb but the principles are the same!

Attendance

What 90% attendance means • ½ a day per week missed • 4 weeks missed in one school year • Half a school year missed at high school

Did you know that‌

for every 10% missed attendance, a GCSE grade is dropped?

Last year’s Y11 • No English class achieved above 90% attendance.

• Last year’s Y11 achieved 66% A*- C – low for a school like this. Same as year before.

• 57 pupils who gained grade D: none had attendance better than 89% • The Y12 re-take class is full – extra staff deployed

Why is grade 5 important now? • Any pupil who does not gain grade 5 at GCSE in the summer must retake it until they pass it (up to the age of 18) • If a student does not like GCSE English, s/he will be stuck with it for at least another year so it makes sense to give 100% effort NOW

Why is this year so important?

• This year is the second year of the NEW EDUQAS GCSE • They are all closed book exams • Pupils need to learn more content than ever • There are no controlled assessments

The countdown is on‌ Total = 235 days left until your first exam Minus 68 days of weekends = 167 days Minus 40 days for holidays and INSET = 127 days

x4 lessons a week = 100 lessons left*! * This does not take into account any extra curricular trips you may be attending this year (for example UCLAN day and the Poland trip)

With what is now on the exam “ You can’t revise for English” You MUST revise for English!

How to prepare for English Language • Read passages from books, websites, and newspaper articles and think about the main points the writer is making, picking out short quotations • Revise persuasive devices: emotive language, rhetorical questions, rule of three etc • Revise and practise writing using a range of writing techniques: capital letters, full stops, commas, connectives e.g. firstly, secondly, furthermore, moreover • Check that writing is accurate and that higher forms of punctuation such as the colon and semicolon can be used correctly • Expand vocabulary by reading and talking about meanings of a range of sophisticated words so they can be used. For example, do pupils know and can they use words such as cynical, volatile, disillusioned, genuine, amnesia, environmental, unprecedented?

We asked our year 11s to sign the contract below that outlines our expectations of students:  Read your literature texts for 5 minutes at the start of each lesson in silence           

Have excellent punctuality to lessons Have over 90% attendance or you WILL achieve grade 4 or below Are organised with the correct books, files and stationery Complete homework and do so to the best of your ability Have a positive ‘can do’ attitude and a growth mind-set Always complete classwork to the best of your ability Listen to the teacher’s advice Complete high quality DIRT Ask for help if you genuinely need it Revise for assessments Attend revision sessions

• think about where your son/daughter revises • whether s/he have distractions e.g. Facebook, X Box, Wii, TV, friends etc.

• how long s/he revises for: 30 minutes then have a break • little and often • early nights important. Having a break before lights out • diet
