Introduction: The Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University has been contracted by Sport England to conduct an independent validation on 325 schools covering 225 SGO areas for the 2015/16 period. As part of our validation visits we have been asked to make recommendations regarding improving the Mark criteria for future years and therefore the criteria for this year is again subject to changes based on the feedback we receive and the validations completed. St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, Middleton provided evidence of meeting or exceeding the required criteria in order to achieve the Gold School Games Mark. The key School Games Mark criteria relating to the Gold award are highlighted below and a green /red score has been made in relation to the evidence seen or discussed with the validation team.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School received a validation for their application for a Mark award on Thursday 7 July 2016 and based on the evidence seen and discussed with Tom Feighan and SGO Julie Roberts the school has successfully achieved a Gold Mark award for the 2015/16 academic year.

The school is clearly committed to providing their pupils with a range of competitive sporting opportunities and a clear file of evidence was in place to showcase this. The school had a clear system in place which tracked young people's participation in School Games activity, allowing the school to identify those who are less active and use Change4Life club and Virgin Active Crew Club as a way to get them active.

The school evidenced provision of 2 hours of PE (curriculum alone) and has extracurricular provision in addition to this, with 87% of pupils on average engaging in this activity on a weekly basis. In order to prevent any pupils missing out on PE, the school also utilises a 'nonparticipant PE worksheet' where pupils learn about the lessons including; session plans, drills, whilst also assessing their peers and reflecting on the lessons. The school evidenced support to help young sports people develop their sporting potential as part of the schools PE policy, whereby a plan is in place to help pupils and families source funding, time and access to training. For example, one pupil at Burnley FC is supported via PE time management and support to his family where needed.

The school was able to provide evidence of offering 11 different competitive sporting opportunities at Level 1 of the School Games and 14 at Level 2, whilst it was also evident that the school had entered 7 B teams and 3 C teams in Level 2 competitions. The school actively promotes the School Games programme to parents and the local community through a variety of channels including daily Twitter updates, weekly website reports and termly PE newsletter, all of which include fixtures, reports and photos, and articles in the local Middleton Guardian.

The school is actively engaging pupils in leading, managing and officiating in School Games activity. During 2015/16 19% of pupils were engaged in this activity, namely through leaders running half-termly house events, playground pals leading break and dinner activities, and Virgin Active Buddies leading activities for younger pupils. 12 pupils have also undertaken the Youth Sport Trust Peer Leaders Programme, who since have provided support for structured dinner clubs. In addition, all young people in school are given the opportunity to 'learn to lead' during PE; using the iPad 'Slow Mo App' pupils have been able lead sessions and provide feedback to their peers via filming, analysing and evaluating performances. Also, kagan cooperative learning style has been applied during PE, enabling pupils of mixed abilities to work together. Finally, 4 pupils make up the 'Sports Ambassador Crew' who meet on regular basis to discuss the planning and development of School Games activity; assigning roles, creating fixtures and reports, and also linking to School Council to put forward their plans.

The school utilises sports coaches to support school sport which provides pupils with high quality coaching in a range of sporting activities.

Furthermore, the school also train wider school staff to support school sport through buying into the Rochdale Borough School Games Partnership offer, providing a number of high quality CPD opportunities. The school also evidenced strong active links with 8 local sports clubs along with a detailed account of the clubs information, which is displayed on the school notice board and website. A number of local clubs also use the schools 3G facilities as their training or competition venue, along with football camps being held there during the school holidays.

The efforts of Tom Feighan and support staff have ensured the school is in a very strong position to maintain Gold award standards in the future.
