Ducklings Newsletter 6/7/16

Wednesday 6th July 2016 Our News!

The children have all started the first part of their road safety training. Mrs Wills has been very impressed with their knowledge. Tobias thought of some brilliant answers to questions about being safe out and about, while Austin made a brilliant poster, with lovely writing on about how to be safe when walking along paths by the roadside. The training will continue for the next few weeks, so please remember to send in a waterproof coat as we will go out in all weathers!

The children loved reading ‘Handa’s Surprise.’ They were able to recall the order of events in the story and used props and puppets to act out and retell the story with their friends.

During snack time the children enjoyed tasting the different tropical fruits from the story and thinking of different words to describe them, such as tangy and creamy.

They have created some lovely sketches of these different fruits using oil pastels and also used clay to model 3D tropical fruits.

The children wanted to investigate which of these fruits would sink or float and what would happen to the level of the water when the different sized fruits were placed in measuring cylinders. Ask them what they found out?!

They also used balance scales to first estimate and then compare the weight of the different tropical fruits.

STARS OF THE WEEK In the Yellow Ducklings, Summer Dixon for all of her hard work preparing, planting and helping to care for our school garden!

In the Green Ducklings, Max Billington for a big improvement in his behaviour, showing kind hands, sharing and taking turns with his friends.

OUR LEARNING

For our last few weeks at school we will be learning about holidays, journeys and the seaside.

We have turned our role play area into an airport check-in.

We will start by reading a story called, ‘You Choose!’ all about if you could go on a journey, where would you choose to go? What would you do there? What and who would you take with you? This will hopefully inspire the children to write postcards of their imaginary journeys.

We will be thinking about what things are needed to be packed in our suitcases for different types of holidays.

The children will write holiday lists, create their own passports and make maps and brochures of their holiday destinations.

We will then read ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and ‘The Rainbow Fish.’

In mathematics we will continue our work on time, exploring reading o’clock and half-past times, make our own paper plate clocks and play lots of time games on the Clever Touch board.

Outside we would like to make giant aeroplanes, trains and other transport to help us ‘go’ on our journeys. Please send in any giant cardboard boxes, tubes and so on to help with this. The more the better!

Next week the children will spend the majority of the week in their new classes with their new teachers preparing for the transition to Year 1.

REMINDERS Junk Materials We are always in need of materials such as kitchen rolls, egg boxes, cereal boxes and so on for our work shop area! Also, please send in giant boxes and tubes, etc, for pretending with outside.

Airport and Holiday Roleplay Please send in suitcases or weekend bags for packing in, also any old holiday clothes such as sandals, flip-flops, swimming towels, swimming costumes, sunhats, shorts and so on. Please name each item and then we can return them.

Holiday Photographs Please send in photographs of your child on holiday or email them to the class teacher to print off, then we can use them for writing holiday postcards. Thank you.
