History of the school

Founded in 1881 through a bequest by William Ward, a Brixton merchant, the school opened in 1894 in Carmelite Street, London. Ward believed in providing girls with a broad, liberal education focused on academic excellence. The school is still governed by the Corporation of London and receives financial support from the City Livery Companies, banks, and other City firms. It shares strong links with the all-boys City of London School, located nearby. In 1969, the school moved to its current location in the Barbican Estate. Despite changes over the years, its core mission of offering an exceptional education remains unchanged, ensuring its enduring legacy in London’s educational landscape.
