Day camp is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. It’s often a child’s first step toward independence and provides an environment intentionally designed for children to explore, discover, and learn about themselves and others. Below are eight reasons why day camp is so beneficial for both your child and your family.
The cornerstone of a traditional day camp is its swim program. Campers typically swim twice a day—one instructional swim and one recreational swim. Children are grouped by swim ability and learn alongside peers at a similar level. Whether your child arrives as a beginner or a confident swimmer, their skills and comfort in the water will grow with each day.
When children are with their parents, it’s hard to develop independence. Day camp allows children to practice taking steps towards independence in a warm, supportive, and safe environment. From getting on the camp bus in the morning, to changing independently
after swim, to choosing what food to try at lunch, campers take small but meaningful strides to rely on themselves. Children feel good about themselves when they do things on their own, leading them to become more self-sufficient.
Children feel proud when they succeed at something they’ve tried. Day camp programs are intentionally designed with age-appropriate activities that create confidence-building moments. Whether a camper completes the ninja course or lands their first arrow on the archery target, these achievements help children feel capable and good about themselves.
Day camps offer a wide variety of activities— sports, arts, adventure, theater and more. Children are exposed to a little bit of everything at day camp, which often leads children to discover a new interest, passion or talent they may never have explored otherwise.
Camp introduces children to peers outside
of school, opening the door to friendships with children from other communities which widens their circle of friends. Camp is designed for making friends easily. Campers spend their days in small groups, participating in activities together and bonding through shared traditions like morning meetings and camp songs.
Children practice social skills daily at camp from communicating with peers, sharing meals, resolving conflicts and learning a new activity together. While school focuses on academics, camp is where a child’s social education takes place.
Day camp is a screen-free environment, giving children a much-needed break from technology. Instead, they enjoy days filled with sports, adventure, arts and crafts, water play, and outdoor fun. Camp encourages face-to-face communication—whether at the lunch table, on the field, or during creative activities.
Beyond the fun and skill-building, day camp is also an excellent childcare option for working families. Many camps offer extended hours with before and aftercare programs, providing full-day coverage while ensuring children spend time outdoors, active, and engaged.

BY JESS MICHAELS
Congratulations! You have made the exciting decision to send your child to an overnight camp for a summer filled with new friendships, new activities, and growing independence. While your focus will be on preparing your child, it is also important for first-time camp parents to prepare themselves. Here are some tips to help both you and your child have a successful first camp experience.
Share Positive Camp Messages
It is completely normal to feel nervous or apprehensive about your child going to overnight camp, but try not to share those worries with them. Focus on positive messages about how fun camp will be and all the exciting activities they have been excited to try. Children often absorb their parents’ emotions, and you do not want to pass along your own anxiety. Save those conversations for friends or your spouse, out of earshot of your child.
Limit What You Pack
You want your child to have everything they need for the summer, but do your best to avoid overpacking. Campers do not need all the “extras,” and too many belongings can feel overwhelming. With limited space in the bunk, less stuff means a more organized space, making it easier for your child to find what they need.
Do Not Make Pick-Up Deals
While it may feel like the right thing to do, telling your child you will pick them up from camp if they are unhappy can send the message that you do not believe they’ll be successful there. Growth often comes with moments of discomfort—homesickness, disagreements with friends, or nerves when trying something outside your comfort zone. Allowing your child to work through these

moments builds confidence, resilience, and independence.
Handling a Homesick Letter or Phone Call
It’s common for first-time campers to experience homesickness, so don’t be surprised if you receive a letter or call expressing this. Kids can both miss home and still enjoy camp. Homesick letters are often written during quiet downtimes such as rest hour or before bed, and hearing your voice on a call can be tough. If you are worried, speak with the camp director, but keep in mind that these homesick moments often pass by the time the next camp activity begins.
Visiting Day Is for Visiting
Visiting Day, especially for first-time families, is a special day for both campers and parents. Children will want to show you their bunk, introduce you to friends and counselors, and participate in activities with you. Be a “joiner” and let them guide the day. Limit the amount of food and gifts you bring—the day is about spending time
together, not about how much you bring your child. Make sure to also follow your camp’s guidelines on what is and is not allowed on visiting day.
Letting go can be hard—especially when you are used to doing everything for your child— but independence is one of the greatest gifts camp provides. While it’s absolutely okay to reach out with questions or concerns, try not to make calling or emailing camp a daily habit. Each communication takes time away from the leadership team’s primary focus: caring for the campers and creating an incredible camp experience.
An added bonus of sending your child to camp is that you gain some time for yourself. Use your free time to make plans with friends, spend time with your spouse, or rediscover a hobby. Don’t spend your summer obsessing over camp photos and worrying about your child—go out and enjoy your summer!

BY JEANNINE CINTRON
When you think of summer camp, images of children playing sports, completing arts and crafts projects, and splashing in pools come to mind.
Those activities make for a very exciting summer, but camp is also a place where lifelong friendships are made and where a child can truly grow as a person during a crucial point in their young lives.
Summer camp offers children the opportunity to focus instead of on their academic success but on their own personal identity and independence. With the school books put away, camp gives kids the freedom to work on themselves.
We spoke with Alicia Skovera, Executive Director of the American Camp Association of New York and New Jersey to learn how and why summer camp is so important to a child’s mental health and internal development.
Does camp help kids who have trouble
making friends or experience social anxiety?
Many children struggle with anxiety about going to camp, especially if it’s their first time. Children often feel more at ease when their feelings are normalized. Parents should explain to children that some of their peers may be feeling the same way but express it differently.
I encourage parents to allow their children to be separated from their friends when attending camp.
Camp tends to be a place where children get to be themselves and try on different parts of their personalities, which can be easier when they do not know anyone to start. There’s an old adage at camps that your camp friends become your best friends and your lifelong friends!
What advice would you give to kids who are nervous or hesitant to start camp?
Choosing the right camp for you is a crucial place to start. There are camps for everyone and it’s important to choose
one that you are excited about and has the activities you are looking for. Set up a meeting to talk with the director before camp starts and take a tour of the property.
Take the time to ask all of your questions before attending, especially about anything that worries you. See if the camp can introduce you to who your counselor is going to be ahead of the summer so you already know them on your first day.
How do you think attending camp affects a child’s mental health in the short term and in the long term?
Camp allows children to discover who they are and find out what they are good at. They get to try new things, meet new people, and overcome everyday challenges that help build self-esteem and self-efficacy.
This skill building helps to build confidence to try new things, which has a positive impact on a child’s mental health both in the short and long term.
Research has shown there is a direct correlation between the time one spends in nature

and the release of the stress hormone cortisol.
The more time children spend outdoors and in the natural world, the less stress they tend to feel. We also know that children who play outdoors are more likely to help protect nature as an adult.
Which camp activities have the best effects on a child’s mental and emotional health?
There is no one activity that gives the best effect for a child’s mental and emotional health. Incorporating choice in activities allows children to follow their own interests and to have ownership in the activity.
Some activities have inherently more challenges than others, like the ropes course or swimming, but it is important to positively encourage a child to try something new and not to force them to try it.
Again, we know that spending time and/ or learning outdoors has a huge impact on a child’s stress levels and how they feel about the natural world when they become adults.
How can parents ensure they are choosing a camp that will benefit their child’s mental
“The more time children spend outdoors and in the natural world, the less stress they tend to feel.”
The AmericanCamp Academy encourages all parents to choose regulated camps that are ACA accredited.
Accreditation and oversight from a regulatory body, like the Department of Health, are the best indicators that a camp will be physically and emotionally safe for every child.
In addition, talk to your child about what they are feeling and what is most important to them. Get to know the camp nurse as well. Find out what the camp’s plan is for when a child needs help.
What can parents do to encourage the mental and emotional growth of their child
at summer camp?
This may sound counterintuitive, but leave your children alone! Allow them to gain their independence without you. Write encouraging letters to your child and let them know that it’s okay to make mistakes and that you believe in them.
Do not include any information about home that would be perceived as stressful or that would have the child feel like they were “missing out” on something going on at home.
When your child is talking to you about what happened at camp, ask questions about their day and when there is something they feel like they could have done better. Ask them what they could have done differently instead of telling them (this especially works for older children).
Lastly, you can call the camp to check in about how your child is doing. Try not to demand to speak to the child on your terms or according to your schedule since often they will be pulled from an activity they enjoy and they rarely want to stop what they are doing.

If you’ve ever been a camper, counselor, worked at a camp, or knew someone who did, you know there’s something special about the anticipation of summer camp. Many live 10 months for two, waiting for the minute they can fling off their school backpacks and run full speed ahead toward their summer home. Sleepaway evenings are spent around a campfire. Day camp afternoons are filled with special activities and snack-time galore. There’s canteen and cabin nights, swimming and sports competitions, whimsical adventure and waterfront fun.
Ask those of us who went to camp (no matter how long ago it was) and you’ll find smiles, friendships cultivated, and words to songs that we can sing at a moment’s notice. We can tell you about our beloved counselors, reminisce about a shared past, and recall our fondest camp memories. We went to camp, our lives have been enriched, and we want others to share the same experience. There’s wisdom in summer camp and it seems that it’s not until we leave that we realize the weight of so many of its gifts.
Today, there are lessons from camp I use every day. There were, of course, the tangible lessons, such as learning to swim and clearing your plate from the table, but the most important lessons may be the ones you can’t see.
Spending time with people from different places provides a time to share stories and hear various ways of life. At camp, kids learn that if there is an unfair practice somewhere (whether it’s how the captains for a team are picked or that a friend might struggle with a difficult home life), the way to make a difference is to listen, get involved, and act with a kind heart.

In my Counselor-In-Training program, we did many activities that continue to apply to life today. One was an exercise in giving directions. While some had to write directions, others had to draw a map. It showed us how people view things, learn, and deliver information differently.
Whether it’s day or sleepaway, camp showcases fun and inclusivity for all. Regardless of the activity or role, kids quickly learn there is a vital place for everyone. There are the experts at storytelling, acting, geocaching, swimming, arts and crafts, sports, and ropes courses, and others who are able to have their firsts in these experiences. There are cooks and maintenance workers, nurses and swim staff, directors and CITs, bus drivers and office staff, and campers and counselors from every walk of life—and everyone plays a vital role in making camp the special space it is. Knowing she is valued and that she matters is something your child takes with her when the camp gates close at the end of the summer.
Embrace Diversity and Don’t Judge
At camp, I met counselors from Camp America (a camp counselor exchange program) whose accents and histories were different from mine. My friends and fellow campers all had different religions and came from varying socio-economic backgrounds. Whether listening to stories around the fire or having snack time chats with counselors, the message gets across: Each upbringing is different and each struggle or triumph should be valued equally.
Whether he’s laughing at a friend’s story, finding his feet in a new choreographed move, working his lungs in the talent show, or staring at the lake dreaming of what’s to come, camp offers your child the magic of creativity, wonder, and imagination. With much needed downtime away from the stressors of school and the pull of screens, parts of the brain awaken that foster the artist and dreamer in him.
Cultivate Independence
Camp helps kids find themselves. She’s away

from home, but cared for, fed, and provided with a safe space. Little by little, she takes her first steps at independence. With each summer, the scary becomes less so and her confidence builds. Cultivating your child’s independence in a safe environment at an early age leads to strong personal development and continued growth.
Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Whatever it was that seems different, terrifying, or impossible is achievable at camp. I learned to swim at camp and later became a lifeguard and aquatics director. I was petrified of spiders and have subsequently gone bush camping in subSaharan Africa and the Australian Outback. Leaving home for camp was difficult the first time, but it made going away to college that much easier. He’ll learn that although experiences may be filled with nervous anticipation at the start, what he gets when he reaches the other side of that fear is priceless.
Be True to Yourself
My three closest friends (from camp) and I are each incredibly different. In our youth, we were an equitation lover, a farm fanatic, a waterfront fiend, and a fan of arts and crafts, and we rarely chose the same activities. There were four different religious beliefs, four different hometowns, varied socio-economic backgrounds, unique style senses, each with a different conglomeration of immediate family, and yet, 30 years later we’re still on each other’s speed dials.
The Simple Things Matter Most of All
Camp is ghost stories and campfires, beach days and arts and crafts, free swim and nature hikes and sea glass hunting and searching for shooting stars. Without the need for high tech screens, the camp experience reminds kids that it’s the simple things that matter most.
Treat Others How You’d Like to Be Treated
At camp, as in life, kindness matters. Campers learn lessons of working as a team, sharing kindness, and trying to lift others up on a regular basis. The overall message of treating others as you’d like to be treated flows through the day’s activities from cabin chores to sharing the last bits of chocolate for a s’more.
Take Time Out for Yourself
Day camps have snack time and many sleep -
away camps have canteen or time to relax, recuperate, and rejuvenate. This translates years later to a community of people who know they need to listen to their bodies, take a break at times, and care for themselves.
Believe in Yourself
Staff members believe in campers and often propel them to believe in themselves. Knowing someone believes in him at a young age stays with a child—it’s what he will grab onto as an adult when things get tough. People believing in you so fiercely makes you believe in yourself.
Don’t Be Afraid to Try New Things
I learned to silkscreen, went on my first hike, took my first horseback ride, and took a fearful plunge off of a 10-foot boulder into open water—all for my first time at camp. Knowing there is always someone there to encourage her to take the plunge, hold her hand, and catch her if she falls (literally and figuratively) makes the anticipation of trying new things easier. Later in life, being scared but plunging ahead anyway takes many different forms. Whether it’s starting a new school, a first job, learning to drive, or going away to college, those lessons from camp stay with her—always.
We All Have Talents
He might be the best at finding bugs along the nature trail. She might love to build things, create stories, or solve problems. He might be the best listener, give the best hugs, or love to help others find their smile. Camp provides outlets for all to find their talents, embrace them, and continue to thrive.
Life Is What You Make of It
Sometimes at camp it rains for a week straight. Here she learns she can be miserable, sulk in her cabin, and be negative about the weather. Or she can learn to dance in the rain, find the joy of splashing in puddles and playing in the mud, and listen to the soothing sounds of the water as it hits the leaves. Life is what you make of it—be mindful, turn the negatives into positives, and always leave the place you’re in a little better than how you found it.
At camp, I met people who were different from me, which helped shape my perspective of the world and my place in it. For two weeks each summer there were kids living
in foster care in New York City who came to camp. For many, it was their first time to see a large body of water or to work on a farm. For those two weeks we all had a fabulous time at camp—just like any other two-week session. Camp allowed relationships to grow, people’s stories were shared, and we learned that people most certainly do change people.
I’ve officially been borrowing my best friend’s clothes since the age of 12. Flip flops made their rounds and whatever sweatshirt one could grab in the morning became yours for the day. We shared hair dryers, stories, canteen money, visiting day treats, memories, and experiences. Sometimes sharing meant your bed when a friend had a nightmare. Sometimes sharing meant your family when someone else’s wasn’t around. Sometimes sharing meant your experiences to put someone else at ease. Camp showcases that sharing is necessary, teaching us to build bridges, not walls.
The only failure at camp is in not trying. Putting your best foot forward, jumping in, and trying your best is one of the hallmarks of camp. New campers learn there is no harm in coming in second, not getting the lead in the camp skit, or missing the goal. This lesson transfers through the decades, keeping camp’s positive attitude afloat in all of us.
Whether it’s sleepaway camp or day camp, each day kids return to their cabins or homes dirty and tired after an energetic day. Inspired by nature’s ability to flip a mind switch, lower blood pressure, and change our perspective, kids who go to camp turn into adults who appreciate the magic of nature.
Friendships forged at sleepaway camp are some of the best I know. Camp teaches kids to meet new people and get to know one another. Counselors from 20 years ago continued to be my mentors for years after camp, and today we share travel advice and are willing to meet up all over the world. My best friends from camp have been a part of my story for more than 30 years. We’ve been there for the happy and the sad, both around the corner and across the globe. Today we may utilize social media and technology to communicate, but these friendships stand the test of time.

Jewish sleepaway and day camps blend classic summer fun with a built-in sense of community. Kids spend their days swimming, creating, competing, exploring, and forming friendships that feel like family, with meaningful moments like Shabbat celebrations and shared traditions that enrich the experience in ways that feel joyful, not formal.
Below, we’ve rounded up Jewish camps families will love, highlighting what makes each one special, from programs and age ranges to the traditions and camp spirit that help shape each community.

When preparing to send your child off to sleepaway camp, it’s natural to focus on the essentials like bug spray, sneakers, and extra socks. But sometimes, it’s the less obvious, more personal items that can make the biggest difference in a young camper’s experience. Of course, there are also practical items you won’t want to forget.
To help identify what really matters, we turned to Lisa Gitelson, CEO of The Fresh Air Fund, an expert who knows camp from every angle. With a career rooted in public service, law, and child welfare, Lisa has spent decades advocating for New York City’s youth. Today, she leads one of the city’s most beloved organizations, giving thousands of children the opportunity to experience the joys of summer camp.
When it comes to preparing kids, especially first-time campers, for the experience, Lisa knows exactly what can help them feel confident, connected, and ready to thrive. Here are her top picks for often-overlooked but absolutely essential camp items:
A small photo can be a big comfort. Whether it’s framed or tucked into a journal, seeing familiar faces helps ease homesickness and keeps home close, even from miles away.
Encourage your child to write about their days, draw pictures, or collect little mementos like leaves or ticket stubs. A journal is a great way for kids to process new experiences and reflect on their time away.
Since most camps don’t allow cell phones, a disposable camera is a simple way for kids to take their own photos and document their experience, without any screens needed.

Card games, travel-sized board games, or puzzles give campers something to do during downtime—and something to bond over with new friends.
This camp classic never goes out of style. Toss in some embroidery floss or simple kits so your child can get creative and make something to swap with cabinmates.
Make it easy for your child to write home.
Pre-addressed envelopes (with stamps already on them!) mean one less thing for your camper to worry about—and a better chance you’ll actually get a letter.
Whether it’s an old favorite or a new read, a good book can be a great companion during quiet moments or rainy afternoons. This familiar story will also help settle some initial nerves.
Even older kids might appreciate having a comforting object from home. A favorite stuffed animal can be a source of security, especially during the first few nights.
Tuck a short, encouraging note into their duffel bag or pillowcase for a little surprise
when they unpack. It doesn’t need to be overly sentimental—just a simple, upbeat message to remind them they’ve got this and that you’re cheering them on from home.
Label everything. Really … everything. From water bottles to sweatshirts to flashlights, a Sharpie helps lost items find their way back.
Camp can be hot and active, so hydration is key. Pack a sturdy reusable water bottle (with their name on it!) to keep your camper cool and healthy.
A few small, thoughtful items from home can go a long way in helping your child settle in at camp. Whether it’s a photo, a note tucked in their bag, or their favorite book, these little touches bring comfort and help make camp feel a bit more like home.
Lisa Gitelson is the CEO of The Fresh Air Fund. Throughout Lisa’s career in public service, as an attorney and child welfare advocate, she has been dedicated to addressing the needs of underserved youth. Prior to joining The Fund, she was Assistant Executive Director/Legal Counsel for The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC). She is also an Adjunct Professor at Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College, CUNY, where she teaches the Policy & Practice of Child Welfare.

Two-Week long Camp Sessions
June 28 – August 22

Overnight Camp: Ages 7 - 14
Equestrian Camp: Ages 7 - 16
Leaders-In-Training (LIT): Age 15
Counselors-In-Training (CIT):Age 16

BY JESS MICHAELS
When searching for an overnight camp, many parents begin the process with their oldest child in mind, often hoping it will be a good fit for younger siblings as well. While there are many advantages to sending children to camp together, it’s important to recognize that each child is different and may need a different camp experience to truly thrive.
Choosing a camp that siblings can attend together offers numerous benefits. Renee Flax from the American Camp Association helps parents find the right camp for their children and says, “It certainly is easier for parents when their children go to camp together. They start and end camp at the same time, have the same visiting days, and it’s easy to keep track of all the logistics. Another strong benefit is that your children have a shared experience and bond over the memories of camp together.”
Matt Krounder, Owner and Director of Camp Schodack, a coed overnight camp in New York says it’s heartwarming to see how some siblings at camp seek each other out
during choice time to do activities together or to just find time to chat. “Older siblings will have check-ins with younger siblings to see how they are adjusting to camp and to help them with any questions, particularly when the younger sibling is starting camp for the first time. Families will often tell me that this dynamic starts well before camp begins, with older siblings answering questions about camp which helps create a strong bond between them.”
For many parents, it’s important that their children go to camp together so during the initial camp search, keep both children in mind. “Look into camps that offer a broad spectrum of activities and focus. There are many camps out there that can satisfy that need and be a great choice for your children even if they are very different people,” comments Flax.
Other parents recognize that their children have different needs and that while one camp is good for one, it may not be the best for the other. “The most important thing is to find the right fit for each child so when parents feel one of their children will benefit from a very different experience or would
thrive in a program focused on a specific activity, it can certainly make sense to have them at different camps,” comments Krouner. “In these situations, I encourage parents to find camps that they trust equally and to have a clear understanding of the differences between the programs. This will help set expectations, both for the parents and how this choice is communicated to their children.”
Sometimes parents start children off at camp together, but then realize that it’s not working out for one of them. Don’t be afraid to consider a switch. “You don’t want to sacrifice one child’s camp experience for the other. If one of your children is still happy at the camp and you believe it’s still the right place for them, then that child should stay at the camp. But if your other child is not being fulfilled for whatever reason, then select a camp that will suit their needs. Above all, you want both of your children to have camp experiences where they are flourishing.”
Ashleigh Jackowitz, Director of Camp Winaukee, an all-boys camp in New Hampshire feels the best gift we can give our children is a camp that fits their unique personality. “It’s important to stay open to the possibility that siblings might need different programs to thrive. For some, that means going to camp together; for others, it means carving out their own independent identity. Success isn’t measured by whether siblings are at the same camp, but by whether each child is in the environment that supports them best.”

It’s decided: you’re sending your child to sleepaway camp and everyone is excited!
Okay, there may be some concern that your sweet child, the one who still forgets to put their plate in the sink, is ready to spend weeks away from home. But it is a summer that offers your child a chance to broaden their independence, grow confidence, and build (or deepen) lasting friendships. And, thankfully, the beauty of sleepaway camp is that there are many to choose from. Some camps are deeply rooted in tradition, while others are arts-driven, sports-focused, or outdoor-adventurefocused. There are camps better for first-timers and camps for kids who are ready for a bigger stretch.
And we’ve got one for you. Below, we’re highlighting sleepaway camps families will love, with details to help you picture daily life there, from philosophy and setting to signature programs and age ranges. We’ve got you!
