“Our daughter’s first National Show was the 2023 Team Purebred Junior Classic in Austin, MN when she was 2 years old! As a young show family, we are very grateful that Team Purebred doesn’t have a bottom age limit for exhibitors. This past Summer at 3 years old, while attending the National Junior Show our daughter not only got to show her three pigs, but she also had the opportunity to participate in showmanship, judging contest, skillathon, and Pig-tionary. It was pretty neat to see her go through these contests on her own, thanks to the Junior Board Staff!”
Exhibitor’s Perspective
“Chelsea and the Junior Board create a family friendly environment during each step of thier events and it doesn’t go unnoticed! We are fortunate enough to not only see the Team Purebred shows through the eyes of our 3-year-old daughter but also through the eyes of our middle school and high school kids that show on our team. Regardless of age, there is fun to be had by all at a Team Purebred event!”

“The National Barrow Show in Austin, MN is a very special event for everyone involved with Team Purebred! Its rich history, particularly the judging contest, is unparalleled in the swine industry. This year, we embraced a superhero theme, celebrating the show’s status as one of the “super” pig shows of the swine industry. We kicked off the weekend with a relaxed Friday night, with breed typing and check-in sessions. One of the highlights of the National Barrow Show is the relaxing environment it creates for all exhibitors and families. Saturday began early with another busy morning of check-in and breed typing, leading us into the exciting showmanship at noon. We were thrilled to have Mr. Al Schminke from Van Horne, Iowa, sorting the 2024 National Barrow Show. His passion for livestock and the show itself truly shined through, and we were grateful to have him on board.
Following a competitive showmanship, the afternoon was packed with the purebred and crossbred gilt show. With around 31 classes of gilts to evaluate, the quality was exceptional! We wrapped up the purebred gilt drive around 9 PM and even managed to fit in some beloved barnyard Olympics, a favorite among all exhibitors. The day concluded with fun relay races and treats, leaving everyone smiling after a long but fulfilling day.
Sunday morning brought the collegiate judging contest, and then the barrow show. With 30 classes of barrows, we were ready for another thrilling day. The quality of the entries was outstanding, culminating in a fantastic barrow show. We ended the weekend exhibiting around 550 head of hogs. As a second-year member of the junior board, witnessing the growth of the National Barrow Show has been an incredible experience. The enthusiasm surrounding its expansion is fantastic and I am excited to see what the future holds for this iconic event. For many years, it has thrived, and I look forward to its continued success for the next generation!

“The Music Drive was a memorable experience for not only the exhibitors but also those involves with Team Purebred. Despite the forecast calling only for rain the entire weekend in Cookeville, TN, this did not detour from the schedule of planned events. This regional event provided the opportunity for youth to come together and showcase their skills while instilling a forever growing passion for the swine industry. The dedication and talent we have witnessed in the youth who were in attendance this past weekend falls nothing short of amazing.
On Friday, trailers began arriving around noon to start what ended as a relaxing, but rainy day.
By that evening breed tying and check in were underway. The next morning everyone was up bright and early for Saturday’s schedule of events. We kicked it off with a series of activities, starting with the skillathon and judging contests. The excitement continued with Jim McCoy judging showmanship beginning that afternoon followed by 33 classes for the gilt show. The night ended on a high note, as exhibitors gathered for the awards banquet followed with entertainment by Oklahoma native, Buddy Owens. A great time was had by all. Sunday, we started the day off early with the barrow show at 9 am, which marked the final highlight of the weekend. McCoy moved right through 27 classes and named a Champion NJSA Barrow and a Champion Team Purebred Barrow. Everyone said their goodbyes and wished safe travels, wrapping up the 2024 Music Drive.”

WHAT IS LOT JB?
As we enter into another fall season, that means pumpkin spice is back, ghouls and goblins patiently await Halloween, and bred sow sales are beginning to kick off.
Which also means Team Purebred is ready to kick off another year of Lot JB Team Purebred introduced Lot JB two years ago as a way to honor Jackie Bauer, a former Junior Board of Directors member from Maryland, and the importance of Mental Health awareness.
Jackie was the youngest child of Ricky and Leslie Bauer She grew up on her family’s 175 acre grain, cattle, and hog farm in Dayton, Maryland She loved raising and showing livestock and being involved in leadership roles with 4-H, Team Purebred, and the National Junior Swine Association. She enjoyed sharing her love of livestock with others, especially with youth. This love of agriculture lead her to become a student at Oklahoma State University majoring in Agricultural Communications and Animal Science Jackie touched many lives in her short life and her kindness, hugs, and smile are missed by many
It was Jackie’s impact on Team Purebred that lead us to create
Lot JB Jackie had a deep passion for the bred and owned division and took pride in getting to raise and show her own pigs All proceeds generated through Lot JB are used for premiums for the Champion and Reserve Overall Bred and Owned exhibitors at the National Junior Show. If you have a bred sow sale this fall and want to participate in Lot JB please reach out to Chelsea SchminkeGrieder, Shelbi McCray, or a Junior Board of Directors member.
Lot JB has also created the opportunity for conversations about the importance of Mental Health awareness While we understand that it can be a difficult conversation to have, we believe it is a vital one Did you know that more than one in five adults in the U S struggle with a mental illness and 1 in 7 children aged between 3-17 has a mental illness? If you or a loved one are struggling, you’re not alone in your struggle. We as humans all battle different things; but the one thing that is so special, is that our passion for our industry brings us together. By continuing to encourage and support the youth, setting an example, and paving the way for the next generation, we can ensure that we create a positive and impactful environment in the barn and show ring
It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. 43.7 suicide deaths per 100,000 population for ag careers
Coming to you from the passenger seat of a truck as we travel for another event this fall! What a whirlwind this Fall has been! I feel as I get older and my kids continue to grow the faster time goes, and I am sure so many families feel this way!
Chelsea Schminke-Grieder Director of Junior Activities + Events
This Fall has been filled with so many memories and so much growth in our two fall events! We started at Junior Classic there in Austin, Minnesota, and this event has a special place in my heart as you can feel the history and nostalgia from the years of breeders and junior families coming together at this event every year. Seeing the breeders sit around ringside as we continued through our events Saturday and Sunday and seeing our junior membership interact with them. This event shows that we can continue to bridge the gap of generations but staying progressive in how we create events. We are thankful for everyone that helps put on this event, but those that support as well! We are excited to continue this tradition each year!
As we continue through this Fall we headed back to Cookeville, Tennessee where we celebrated with our families with music, fun, and a great hog show! Even though Hurricane Helene gave us a run for our money we had so much fun getting to build on relationships in our second year with this event, but met so many new families as we as well! Music Drive has grown so much in just one year and we thank you for the continued support at an event that we have so much fun putting together for you all! With so much growth our team will continue to learn how we can adapt and change to make our events better for our membership!
As we continue through this Fall and into the Winter season, one word comes to my head as I sit in the passenger seat and travel to another event, grateful. Grateful that I get to be a small part of your journey, grateful that I get to live and push an industry that is near and dear to my heart, that I get to raise my kids in an industry that creates core memories for friends and families throughout the nation, and most importantly grateful for your support in what Team Purebred does day in and day out.
Make sure to check out the Team Purebred website for Winter Event updates and more and make sure to follow us on social media platforms for the most updated information day in and day out!”
