Climbing to new heights

The 2024 National Youth Leadership Conference was recently held in Raleigh, North Carolina. For the first time in the history of the event, the National Junior Swine Association and Team Purebred partnered to put on the event. Over the course of three days participants got to hear from six keynote speakers, tour NC State University, visit three different farms, attend four Junior Board breakout sessions, an arcade night, and multiple dance parties!

2024NationalYouthLeadershipConference

Thursday began with a keynote from Dr. Todd See, the head of the Animal Science Department at NC State. Participants then loaded the buses and headed for campus! We had lunch in one of the dining halls and then took a walking tour of campus lead by undergraduate Animal Science students. Participants spent the afternoon in various hands-on workshops learning about precision agriculture, animal reproduction, and leadership. We concluded our time at NC State by visiting The Howling Cow Ice Cream parlor. Once we arrived back at the hotel we enjoyed a BBQ dinner and a keynote from Roy Lee Lindsey, CEO of the North Carolina Pork Council. We then closed out day one at Frankie’s Fun Park where participants got to play laser tag, race go karts, and enjoy various arcade games!

“NYLC was a great week. It was good to see kids from all across the country and not just the Midwest. From touring NC State to the Perdue Learning Center we were able to see parts of North Carolina that I never would have imagined were as pretty as they are.”

Day two began with a keynote from Dr. Lisa Becton, Associate Director of the Swine Health Information Center. Participants then loaded onto the buses to for a day of tours. The first tour of the day was to Marlow Ivey’s Prestage Commercial Swine Finisher. While there, participants got to see a commercial finisher and lagoon system. From there we got to experience a different side of the animal agriculture industry, poultry. At Perdue’s Poultry Education Center participants were able to see inside a poultry finisher and learn about the ins and outs of the poultry industry. Once we arrived back at the hotel we go to hear from a career panel put together by the National Pork Board. We closed out the final night of the conference with a popcorn social and Lip Sync Battle!

“NYLC is an event I was lookingforward to all year I went last year as a participant and going as a Junior Board member this year and representing Team Purebred brought a different experience to the conference. Myfavorite part of the week was going around and learning about the swine industry and seeinghow differently they run their operations compared to other parts of the US. Another highlight of NYLC was listening to the keynote speakers that came out and told us their story and how this industryhas impacted their life.”

-Jacie Tinsman

The final day of the 2024 National Youth Leadership Conference kicked off with a keynote from Abigayle Pollock. Participants then broke out into groups for breakout sessions put on by the NJSA and Team Purebred Junior Board of Directors. In these groups they learned how to brand themselves, various careers in the industry, creating feed rations, different contest opportunities, and the importance of building confidence in and out of the show ring. Following that, participants heard from the final speaker of the conference, Emily Wagner, Producer & Host on Carolina Soil with Emily. The conference concluded with the presentation of certificates and superlatives.

"Welcome to the Junior Connection! I am excited for everyone to see the items Team Purebred has been working hard the past few months come to shine and our new digital publication is the first of many! The Junior Connection was created to help bridge the gap for our junior organization and industry leaders and we can't wait to hear all the things you learn and enjoy in this publication Enjoy the word search and all the fun games and news as a family!

As we are gearing up to host our National Junior Show in Springfield, the feelings of excitement come rushing in and seeing all the hard work that the Junior Board is putting into this show has been incredible. With that, comes the bittersweetness of retiring an incredible set of second year junior board kids. These four individuals are incredible, diverse, and electric people to be around. They want the best for Team Purebred, and you can see that in the leadership roles they have taken this past year. Isabelle Doherty (WI) is truly the most down-to-earth, nicest people you will ever meet. Her love and passion for this industry is incredible, but her love for the youth and the experience that they receive is out of this world. I am extremely thankful she decided to run for this board. Hailee Dannenberg (IL) is the girl that can give us constant laughter and has a connection anywhere we go! She works hard and always has a great attitude It has been a pleasure to watch her grow the last two years! Bobby Satterfield (OH) has not been able to travel with us as much, but he has a love for this industry and what we do! He is the hardest worker and always up for any crazy ideas we give him! Last, but certainly not least Mr Grayson Tedrow from Illinois He served as Chairman this past term and such an outstanding human being and role model for kids to look up to He wants to improve this industry and his passion behind every step he takes is extremely admirable and deserving I am so thankful for each of them, and they deserve the world

I can't wait to see everyone at the 2024 National Junior Show, entries close June 3! Until Next Time,
