LOIS AND THE LANTERN

n a dark, dead end dirt road in Fort Collins, Colorado, a sweet couple of neighbors, their evening lanternlit walks, and their love story inspired a quartet of ladies to name their string band Lois and the Lantern. Although they used to joke when asked, “Which one of you is Lois?” and say things like, “she’s in Bermuda,” or “she’s traveling the world,” the truth is they are keeping Lois alive. Her widower Rick just happens to be one of their biggest fans, and even jammed with them on a Neil Young tune a couple months ago. These four Colorado ladies, Saja Butler (banjo, guitar, ukulele and vocals), Theresa Brodzinski (guitar, harmonica, banjo, trumpet, vocals), Tara Lynne Sparks (bass), and Mary Merritt (mandolin, vocals), organically found their love of playing stringed instruments together in 2014. Mary and Theresa were neighbors and began playing in backyards together where Theresa hosted a monthly women’s jam night that was deemed the Clam Jam. Tara was lucky enough to be Saja’s neighbor and picked up the bass, having Saja help her learn to play it. The two of them showed up to what had become the Clam and Man Jam, “we allowed sausages every once in awhile,” Tara said, and eventually they felt like they had enough songs to play and share. Their first show was at Starry Night as a trio on a first Friday, and Mary said, “It was super fun!” Saja agreed with her thought; “We kick ass man!” At that time Mary and Theresa were calling her special guest Saja Butler, but she quickly asked, “Can I be in the band?” Theresa was stoked because she had been wanting to ask her to join, but kept thinking, “Don’t scare her away!” Tara joined and added in the bottom end which really filled in the sound.

rolling stones’ euro tour w/Backstage flash Our very own Director of Photography, Michael Emanuele, owner of Backstage Flash Concert Photography just returned from a very exciting trip to Europe where he had the honor of photographing the Rolling Stones in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Dusseldorf. The following account is best served with the images available on his Facebook Page: BackstageFlashLiveConcertPhotography. Enjoy, and stay tuned for his upcoming photography show in January 2018. “I applied for this position several months ago and was very happy when the approval was made final,” Michael said. “Having seen the Stones many times in my life and even meeting them on several different occasions, being inside the barriers at a Rolling Stones show with my cameras was clearly a much different experience. Even though photographers are only allowed to shoot a few songs at each show, the sense of excitement in those moments can never be explained. And being in Europe made it extra special. Having my girlfriend and many friends waiting for me as I was escorted in and out of the photo pit was one of the most emotional moments of my life. High fives and hugs were everywhere and my smile was about a mile wide. This was by far the most memorable concert photography experience one could ever hope for.”

CITY BUZZ Ray Harvey

Ray Harvey’s Ravishing New Writings Former Ace Gillett’s bartender Ray Harvey has written two pieces in two months: a nonfiction book titled “101 Things to do Instead of College,” and a novella that titillates with its realistic beauty, plausible sensuality, and provocative characters: “The Woman Who Made A Pact With The Devil.” The point, he says, in writing “101 Things to do Instead of College” was not to condemn college categorically, for condemnation sake, but rather to counter the rather reckless notion that one MUST go to college in order to have a complete or successful life. “That idea,” he says, “is not only incorrect: it’s dangerous.” Why? “Only the truly passionate maintain for a lifetime the beautiful vision of their youth and go on to give it form. The means by which we give that vision form is our work. No matter what any given person may become, no matter how good, bad, ugly, or great, in the springtime of life, each person at one time believes that her existence is important, and that big wonderful things await. Each and every single human being has the potential to retain that vision, and each and every single human being should retain that vision, because it’s the correct vision. College, I submit, can do irreversible damage to it.” “The Woman Who Made A Pact With The Devil” is a love story ... with a devilish twist: a philosophical inquiry into the nature of the human body and brain — how the flesh and the spirit are not at war but just the opposite — and though, contrary to popular belief, Ray Harvey is not the devil, any more than his book is a satanic story, it’s nevertheless perfect for Halloween.

From the Streets of Jersey to the Lincoln Center

They had a look and an attitude that was all their own, and it might have landed them in jail if they hadn’t become one of the greatest musical acts of the 1960s. While many people know Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons for their multitudes of classic hits like “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” they don’t know the whole story of the group’s rise to fame. Jersey Boys, the Tony Awarding-winning Best Musical, tells the heart-wrenchingly honest story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It’s a story about how four New Jersey hoodlums established a brotherhood that would see them through the wild successes and traumatic lows of pop stardom. They were blue-collar kids, first-generation Americans and high school dropouts who were flirting with careers in crime. “It was the archetypal American rags-to-riches story: You start with nothing, achieve success and then try to navigate your life through the waters of success,” says Rick Elice, co-writer of Jersey Boys. Friendship took them from the mean streets of Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “That was a very powerful hook,” says Elice.“We all know what it’s like to want acceptance, to want respect and to try to find a sense of home with people that are not just the family we’re born into but the family that we choose.” Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center, Nov. 30–Dec. 2. Tickets start from $20 at LCtix.com.

Elephant Revival Blooms With Symphonic Backing Elephant Revival has garnered a reputation for its haunting, lush, acoustic sound that is at once evocative and mysterious. The Nederland, Colorado based group is comprised of multi-instrumentalists playing fiddles, horns, banjos, cellos, washboards and even the occasional musical saw that all blend into a hard-to-define sound that is rooted in Americana, gypsy, Celtic and folk songcraft. Petals, the latest album by the group, is their most intimate album to date and carries a message about how much life there is in loss, how much potency, how much love. The indie band will perform songs from Petals at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center on November 25, accompanied by members of the Fort Collins Symphony. Bonnie Paine, who plays the washboard, djembe, musical saw, stompbox, and serves as the primary vocalist for Elephant Revival, says that the symphonic collaboration “gives the songs a sense of blooming.” There are “so many layers that are suddenly able to weave in and out; the orchestrators make the music even more dynamic.” The orchestra will soften to allow the band to shine, or intensify depending on the song. Paine says “It’s a dance — one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever done is to get to play with the symphony.” Elephant Revival featuring members of the Fort Collins Symphony promises to be a truly unique concert experience. Tickets start at $28 and are available at LCtix.com. Elephant Rivival

Mr. Crubs

Traveling Into an other Dimension Local live painter Stephen Hernlund, better known as Mr. Crumbs, is a friendly face in the Fort Collins music community. He has been living in Fort Collins for six years and started live painting in the music scene three years ago. He has quickly built up a rapport for himself in the community through the fusion of music and art in the creation of his otherworldly paintings. His paintings are even more notable than his mastery of live performance. Witnessing his art allows the viewer to step out of planet Earth and into the dimension of Mr. Crumbs. It’s a dimension full of extraterrestrials, fluorescent colors, sacred patterns, and mind-blowing finite detail guaranteeing the experience of being absorbed in a whirlwind of imagination. Mr. Crumbs gets his inspiration through spiritual means while he is asleep. He says that he “mostly has dreams but sometimes the dreams evolve with the paintings.” This includes him dreaming for days about the same piece until it is finished. Mr. Crumbs is admirable because he never went to school for painting, but rather followed his heart in self-expression leading to his passionate devotion to his art. He makes a living from his paintings and puts his mind, body, and soul into the production of every piece. Mr. Crumbs uses his actual dreams to create his reality of a living dream. Do not be a stranger to Mr. Crumbs when he’s painting at a local show, wearing clothes as colorful as his paintings! He has a mural hanging on the wall at 1501 RestauBar, and he paints at Hodi’s Half Note every Tuesday. He will be at Sonic Blossom at the Aggie on the third of this month. CITY BUZZ Community Creativity rides to town Fort Collins local coffee shop, The Bean Cycle, is introducing a new element that compliments their savory coffee while growing the essence of community connection. For 13 years the Bean Cycle has kept the significance of the historical presence that coffee shops were originally founded upon, to provide a platform for community networking and revolution. The Cycle has kept this concept afloat throughout the years by honing in on preservation of the art of human connection through hosting a series of events such as poetry slams on the first Friday and open mic nights on the last Friday of each month. They are most notably recognized for having a vast book collection in the shop to give coffee lovers the opportunity to escape from the chaos of their fast-paced lives, and a chance to get lost inside the whimsical discoveries that live inside the realms of literature, as seen on their sign outside the store: “Coffee & Books.” Although their library has always been a part of the Bean Cycle’s repertoire, they have blossomed a new idea that would take integrating community connection a step further. In July of this year, the library was removed to make room for a new creative space. The space is still in the process of being developed but is showing promise to open in early November. It will include a community space for artists to display their work, central to the idea that it is welcome to the public along with advocating the ability for shy artists to spread their wings in an accepting and open environment. The objective for this space is to broaden the education of creativity, which will be exemplified through creative workshops and classes that will be offered. The library will not be completely lost as a “Little Free Library” is in the process of being built to promote the exchange of free books amongst the community. The Bean Cycle still has the same classic flavor but now with a little more caffeine to heighten community engagement. More information on the creative space can be found through Sarah Bendix at halfcrowncreative@gmail.com as well as on facebook.com/halfcrowncreative, now open to art display inquiries! CITY BUZZ the burroughs soulful strut Sitting in the listening room at The Music District, Johnny Burroughs, lead singer of Greeley’s ninepiece soul band The Burroughs, is talking about the upcoming release of their first studio album. “The new album is our coming-of-age statement,” Burroughs says. “It’s about falling in love, tumultuous emotions, and how you can choose your identity and find peace inside frustrations.” The record, entitled Got To Feel, was recorded at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver, Colorado with producer and engineer Colin Bricker. Over four years, The Burroughs built a loyal following with their exciting and dynamic live performances. Johnny Burroughs, who is a licensed minister at Fusion Ministries in Greeley, displays spectacular stage moves, including full-splits and costume changes, causing comparisons to James Brown. The Burroughs’ music, full of constant changes in key and tempo, plus the four-piece horn section’s synchronized struttin,’ keeps audiences riveted. The Burroughs’ excitement for the album is palpable. “The identity of the band has finally come into focus,” he says. “Creating this album, we’ve discovered who we are and locked in our sound.” Burroughs played tracks from the new album, including the organized bombast of the first single “Touch the Sky,” the aspirational chords of “Seismic Symphony,” and “Kiss You,” which might have come off a James Brown set. Burroughs’ voice, over the band’s grooves, combines tenor, contralto, and falsetto, suggesting Smoky Robinson and Sam Cooke. Got To Feel is set to be released January 9, 2018. Upcoming shows this month are November 17 at New Belgium and November 17 at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox in Denver. For more information, visit theburroghssoul.com.

celtic concert for charity The Rocky Bards present a Celtic Concert that benefits the Wounded Warrior Project on Saturday, November 18 at 7 p.m. at the Rialto Theater in Loveland. This is the group’s first performance at the elegant and beautifully restored 1920s theater. The musicians and singers donate their time each November to put on a concert to give back to this worthy cause. Formed in November 2011, the group performed at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Greeley, and in 2016, due to the growth in popularity, they added a second performance at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center. In addition to the two performances for the Wounded Warrior Project in 2016, the group performed at The Pikes Peak Celtic Festival in Colorado Springs. In December of 2016, some members of the group had the great honor of performing with the Loveland Choral Society for their Christmas Production “Christmas in America”. In June of 2017, the Rocky Bards returned to the stage for two performances at the Pikes Peak Celtic Fest in Colorado Springs. On October 29 they are performing at the Lincoln Center. Some of the musicians and singers play at a weekly Celtic Music Session at Lucky Joe’s Saloon in Fort Collins every Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and in various local choral and drama groups. For more information about the band visit: facebook.com/RockyBards.

BREWERY NEWS! We are proud of our NoCo breweries that medaled this year at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF)! Check out the winning beers and categories here. CooperSmith’s: Punjabi Pale Ale: Gold - English-Style India Pale Ale The 1990 original has a big malty body and Cascade hop aroma and flavor. Centennial hops were added to lend to an American style.

DOWN THE HATCH // the Larimer Humane Society. A blend of two golden sours and their flagship Saison was aged in a tequila barrel. This was a quick sell out, so stay tuned for a potential special release.

Odell Brewing Co: Eluxansis: Bronze - Pro-Am Home brewer Mark Boelman authored the brown ale base beer, with chocolate malt and oats. Raspberries were added and then aged for nine months in former Friek storing American oak barrels. Described by their taste panel as almost sessionable (for a sour), flavors of cherry cordials, light marzipan, apricot, raspberry, oaky, nutty, and a hint of roastiness, well loved, it disappeared quickly!

Funkwerks: Saison: Gold - Classic Saison This flagship Saison tastes of tangerine, passion fruit, lemon verbena, ginger and black pepper and is always available on tap.

Jessup Farm Barrel House: Fancy Pants V4: Gold - Brett Beer Variations to the three beers in this series evolve with each batch. V4 was a blend of 100% Brett fermented oak-aged IPA and pale ale, fermented with house ale yeast, then dry-hopped with Eukaunot and Galaxy hops. V5 is oakaged IPA, dry-hopped with Amarillo and Eukuanot hops. V6 will be ready right before Christmas. WeldWerks Brewing Co.: Medianoche: Gold - Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout The 13.9% ABV 17 month bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout, sold fast and furious. Luckily, there is a Medianoche Series, including Vanilla and Rum Double Barrel versions. Check their Facebook page for availability and future events.

Wiley Roots: Galaxy Dry Hopped Funk Yo Couch: Gold - Mixed-Culture Brett Beer This tart farmhouse Saison is fermented with wild brett and dry hopped with over one lb per barrel of Australian Galaxy hops.

Black Bottle Brewery: Lichtenhainer Sour Ale: Silver - Pro-Am Brewed with Daniel Tomkins of Laramie, this historic German style oak-smoked sour ale is made with wheat malt and is only 4.0% ABV.

C.B. & Potts: Big Horn Hefeweizen: Silver - South German-Style Hefeweizen Characteristically cloudy with notes of clove and banana, this flagship beer is always on tap. Grimm Brothers Brewhouse: Little Red Cap: Bronze - German-Style Altbier The Dusseldorf style uses specialty malts and top-notch European and American hops, resulting in a sweet, red hue with notes of chocolate, caramel and toasted bread crusts.

Loveland Aleworks: 5th Anniversary Tequila Sour: Bronze - Wood and Barrel-Aged Sour This sour ale was brewed for their annual July Fest of Ale with assistance from

Try these November releases: Horse & Dragon Brewing Company - Seasonal Rum-Barrel Aged Coconut Porter (pictured) and the winter warmer, H&D Snug Vanilla Caramel Double Cream Ale are back. HopSweeper is a new hoppy Imperial IPA, which allowed new brewer Josh to play with the hops he inherited. Old Colorado Brewing Co. - Look for two new original owner Grandpa Neckel’s recipes: Platte River Pale Ale, a refreshing ale with a hint of Munich malt, balanced with Perle, Columbus and Fuggle hops, and Gem’s Red Ale, a crisp, ruby-red ale finished with Fuggle hops. Soul Squared Brewing Company - This month’s CSA beer Acorn Squash, an American Amber Ale, is brewed with 100 lbs of roasted squash and fresh wet Chinook Hops from CSU’s indoor hop growing project. Also releasing is a Glutenreduced Kolsch, a traditional German style ale.

He has been around since the early 90s as the “ex-multicultural teacher knocking them dead at open mics around the Boston area.” Though his initial goal was to be a jazz singer, Gilbert discovered his ability for storytelling through acoustic folk music and ran with it. Since then, Gilbert has recorded 12 albums, and opened for artists like Aretha Franklin, Ario Guthrie, and Anita Baker. Gilbert is considered an integral part of the national folk scene, and you can catch him at Avogadro’s Number on November 5. Get your tickets at avogadros.com.

// CANNABIS CORNER COLORADO DANKSGIVING FEAST

Turn your Thanksgiving into the ultimate “Danksgiving” by adding marijuana butter in your favorite holiday recipes. Cook the cannabis at low temperatures over long periods of time. The marijuana will not become too hot too quickly and burn off active cannabinoids. Simmer your cannabis either on the stove or in a slow cooker at a temperature range of 200F to 250F for about eight hours. INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb. unsalted butter (use high quality) • 1 cup water (add more water at any time if needed) • 1 ounce of ground cannabis flower or 1 1/2 ounces of high-quality cannabis trim (this amount will make some pretty potent butter. Choose the strain dependent on the mood you want. Increase butter to a less potent high or decrease the flower for optimal level) SLOW COOKER METHOD: 1. Turn slow cooker to low and add in 1 cup of water, 1 lb. of unsalted butter, and 1 to 1 1/2 ounces of ground cannabis flower. 2. Cover slow cooker and let simmer on low for 8 to 24 hours, stirring occasionally. When it comes to infusing butter, the longer you let the cannabis product simmer, the more cannabinoids merge into the final product. 3. After simmering for your desired amount of time, pour the hot mixture into a glass, refrigerator-safe container. Use a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer to strain out all plant product from the butter mixture. Squeeze or press the plant material to get as much liquid off of the plant product as possible. Discard leftover plant material. 4. Cover and refrigerate remaining liquid overnight or until the butter is fully hardened. Once hardened, the butter will separate from the water, allowing you to lift the now infused canna-butter from the water to use in your recipes. Discard remaining water after removing the hardened cannabutter. 4. Let the canna-butter sit at room temperature to soften for use. Do not use a microwave to soften the butter. Add to turkey and dressing or your favorite dessert. Make sure you label it for Adult consumption only.

HEMP GENETICS FIRST US-BRED HEMP

New West Genetics (NWG) just joined into one of the country’s most respected Agtech accelerators – The Yield Lab in St Louis, Missouri. NWG is the first cannabis company to be accepted by Yield Lab, situated is the hub of the country’s Ag corridor. In 2016, the company’s variety Rely™ it the first US-bred hemp seed to pass a Department of Agriculture trial in any state. CEO Wendy Mosher states, “We recognize not all cannabis will be grown outside due to regulatory hurdles. However, as much as can be grown outside, should. It is the right choice to make for increasing the sustainability of the industry, and the feasible choice economically, which equates to more value to the dollar for consumers and patients.” New West Genetics focuses on creating large-scale harvestable, seedbased cannabis genetics for the United States marketplace, like farms and large crops. The company breeds hemp varieties that are tailored for various end-use products like CBD oil or paper. The company promotes well-bred genetics. They make hemp accessible. They solve production challenges like pests and disease resistance. NWG is run by well-respected scientists that are next-gen analyzing the genomics of hemp with the intent to improve the varieties. They are based in Fort Collins and are changing the face of the hemp industry.
