BOHEMIAN NIGHTS AT NEWWESTFEST 2017

Leftover Salmon

T

hree days. Six stages. Eighty-six bands. It’s hard to count all the reasons we’re pumped for Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest. Co-produced by Bohemian Nights and the Downtown Fort Collins Business Association, this free music festival is a summer staple—and 2017’s festival, held on August 11, 12 and 13 in downtown Fort Collins, is shaping up to be the best yet. This year’s headliners, who anchor the festival’s main stage on Mountain Avenue each evening, appeal to a broad base of music fans. Leftover Salmon, the Boulder-born “architects of Jamgrass,” headline on Friday, August 11 at 8:30 p.m. Performing on Saturday, August 12 at 8:30 p.m. is CAKE, the alt-rock band that rose to fame with hits like 1996’s “The Distance” and 2001’s “Short Skirt Long Jacket.” Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile closes out the festival with a performance at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13. Seeing national headliners is just part of the fun, though. Across the festival’s six stages, emerging and established Colorado talent fills the weekend’s music schedule. Though you’ll see plenty of festival favorites (Slow Caves, The Subdudes) on the lineup this year, half of the artists billed are playing Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest for the first time. New to the festival is Greeley-based folk band Igaus Davis. When asked about the opportunity to perform, Michael Igaus said, “I started up this music project just over a year ago, and we’ve been trying to find out how to become more

established in the Colorado music scene. It is incredibly encouraging to have been selected to show my music, especially since all of my favorite Colorado bands have played here at one time or another.” Other first-time festival artists have been part of the music scene for years, like Cory Clarke and Cody Marsden of Fort Collins hiphop duo Kind Dub. “We have been immersed in the local scene for almost a decade, and it means the world to us to make the lineup,” said Clarke. “There is nothing better than knowing our music has a place in our community.” As you explore Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest, you’ll see that sense of community and music’s place within it, celebrated by festivalgoers and artists alike. It’s a reminder of the supportive and vibrant music scene that exists in Northern Colorado year-round. “The fact that you can go to a festival like this and see musicians cheering for other groups speaks volumes,” said Igaus.

Calling all art lovers! A group of creatives coined The Rocky Mountain High Flyers Guild is working at the Creatorspace in Loveland building a 40+ ft. LED-lit, fire-topped, modular, climbable sculpture that has been granted Honorarium status at Burning Man 2017. It will not be burned, however, and is scheduled to be installed at some capacity at the ARISE Festival, Denver’s Maker Faire, along with Loveland’s 2018 Fire and Ice Festival, and more. This combination of Northern Colorado makers from the Loveland Creatorspace, along with artists from the Artspace next door and metal workers from Longmont’s Tinkermill are all contributing their efforts to create the art installation. Named “Dragonfly Mating Ritual,” the piece represents the ritual of dragonflies who while mating form the shape of a heart, all while spinning above lotus flowers and interactive lights. Their Kickstarter and more information is available at: dragonflymatingritual.org. Scintillating Fire Circus, our local performance troupe of talented fire performers, will be joining the sculpture for exciting performances at ARISE and Burning Man. Find out more about these hotties at: scintillatingfirecircus.com.

WELLINGTON MAIN STREET SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Hey, Lady!

Downtown Wellington is the place to be on Saturday, August 19 with a free concert by B-52s tribute act Hey, Lady!, winner of the 2012 Leftapalooza Mile High Tribute Band Competition. Founded in 2009 by sister/brother duo Deb Britton and Steven Blasinsky with the mission to spread the love, fun and wacky party spirit of the B-52s across Colorado and beyond, this is not your average background-music cover band. “Hey, Lady!” captivates audiences of all ages with their concert-style shows, outrageous wigs, costumes and contagious B-52s dance grooves. “Hey, Lady!” has been raising audience eyebrows and heart rates. They have even caught the attention of the B-52s own Fred Schneider III who commented on his Twitter account: “Hey, check out ‘Hey, Lady!’ on YouTube. A B-52s cover band. They’re fantastic! Steve has me totally right! Love them & they’re great people!” Kicking off the evening at 6:30 p.m. is The Coteries, a folk duo who is returning by popular demand after a very well-received show during last year’s concert series. This is the third in a three-part series of concerts in the Tabby Road Animal Hospital’s Wellington Main Street Summer Concert Series which features a tribute act paired with an original Northern Colorado band each month. Scene Magazine and the Colorado Sound are both media partners of the series.

CITY BUZZ City and Colour Canadian-musician Dallas Green, better known as his alias City and Colour, will be stopping in Bellvue at Mishawaka Amphitheatre on August 19 as a part of his 2017 U.S. tour. After traveling the globe, releasing numerous albums (collaborations featuring big names like P!nk) and collecting scores of accolades, Green is still continuously searching for answers that each record holds. For his latest album release, If I Should Go Before You, Green discovered a certain kind of family in his bandmates. “Anybody who has seen us play will understand that this is the best representation of what we do live that we have ever recorded,” Green said. “I was so excited about being able to make and record an album with these guys that it just flowed. I felt so confident about their abilities to make all of my ideas come true.” Considering this project was very influenced by Green’s inner world, the layers to the albums is beyond the music and lyrics but about the people creating the songs themselves. However, Green assures he’ll always be searching; which means there will always be more songs. For tickets to see City and Colour, visit mishawaka.ticketforce. com

SteelDrivers Bluegrass band from Nashville, The SteelDrivers, will be taking the stage on August 26 at Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue. As 2016 Grammy winners for Best Bluegrass Album, The SteelDrivers seem to be such an engaging band due to their incongruous blend of blues and country, soul and slink, mountain coal and red dirt. “I think that’s what moves people when come to see us: the realness and rawness and edge,” says fiddler Tammy Roger, who formed the SteelDrivers in 2005 with bassist Mike Fleming, guitarist Gary Nichols, mandolinist Brent Truitt, and banjoist Richard Bailey. Accompanied by Sierra Hull and the Railsplitters, tickets to see The SteelDrivers are $25 for general admission and $40 for VIP. Doors at 6 p.m., show at 8 p.m. For tickets to see The SteelDrivers, visit mishawaka.ticketforce.com.

Shatterproof Mark the calendar for August 5 because punk rock is preparing to take over Fort Collins at the Aggie Theatre on Saturday night. With almost the entire lineup consisting of Colorado-bred bands, Shatterproof will be headlining the show featuring their unique avenues and muses ranging from carnival, latin and gypsy styles. Vocalist Branson Hoog, guitarist Jeremy Marmor, bassist Josh Schoenig, violinist/keys TJ Wessel, and drummer Benji Spoliansky are one powerhouse rock band you don’t want to miss! Heartfelt and energetic rock band, Silver and Gold, travels from Greeley to perform at this show and debut their talents at the Aggie. The only out of state band, Sink In, formed in early 2015 and surfaced with a refreshing ambient and technical twist to the modern pop-rock genre. After receiving outstanding praise on the road, Sink In found themselves in the studio to record their debut release Wide Eyes EP. Saints of Never After is the band you want to sing, dance and mosh to given their extreme pop punk and post hardcore sound. Their energy is remarkable and their lyrics are meaningful. Finally, indie-alternative band from Denver, Ivory Circle features former middle school choir teacher and now singer-songwriter Connie Hong, producer/multi-instrumentalist Chris Beeble, and drummer/percussionist Rob Spradling. For tickets to see these talented five bands, visit aggietheatre.com.

CITY BUZZ Fort Collins Peach Festival Brought to you by The Rotary Clubs of Fort Collins, the 7th Annual Fort Collins Peach Festival will be taking place August 19. This is the first year the event will relocates to the Civic Center Park and Washington Park area in Fort Collins versus its usual Hughes Stadium location. The Peach Festival is a yearly tradition that brings together family and friends in Northern Colorado while allowing local businesses to market themselves and give back to the community through sponsorship opportunities. The festival also donates back to the community with a portion of its profits given to The Rotary Clubs of Fort Collins and STEM Education Fund. The festival has been growing every year since its 2011 beginning. In 2015, the event hosted 15,000 attendees, while that number increased to 17,000 in 2016, raising several thousand dollars for charities. The event will offer peaches from Palisade, a 5K run/walk, along with live music from Matt Skinner Band, Edison, and Taylor Scott Band. A multitude of child-friendly activities like bouncy castles and inflatable courses will also be found in the Kid Zone. Attendees can, of course, look forward to plenty of peach themed food and drinks—think peach margaritas, peach beer, peach wine, and peach pies! Entrance to the Peach Festival is $5 for anyone 16 years old and older and will kick off at 10 a.m. and wrap up at 6 p.m. For more information visit: fortcollinspeachfestival.com

Schrader Oil Co.’s SOC Grand Prix

The Mish: Lighting Up Summer Nights

On August 19, the annual tricycle race fundraiser will take place at Schrader Oil Co. on 320 N. College Ave. from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The SOC Grand Prix is a four-person team relay race on a small dirt track, where each team will be completing a four lap race. Schrader Oil Co. will be providing custom built adult tricycles for competitors. The cost to compete is $50 per person or $200 per team. To register, visit: socgrandprix.com/event-info/team-signup. The event will be benefiting Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicating itself to preparing young people to succeed in a global economy. The funds received from SOC Grand Prix will be used for scholarships, materials that enhance learning activities, classroom field trips, and school supplies. Whether you are racing or just want to drop by to cheer the teams on, there will be beer from Odell Brewing for purchase as well as music and local food.

It’s no secret that the spectacular scenery at Mishawaka Amphitheatre is a sight to behold during the day. All summer long, you can gather under vivid yellow umbrellas to dine on the deck, complete with majestic views of canyon wildlife, and a rockin’ soundtrack courtesy of the roaring Cache la Poudre River. At night, the moon and stars provide an ambient glow, but it wasn’t until recently that Mother Nature could step more fully into the spotlight at The Mish. “We wanted to be able to show off the inherent beauty of the surroundings even after the sun goes down,” said Mishawaka owner and general manager Dani Grant, “so we specifically added lighting to our nighttime concerts that makes the natural landscape a more prominent part of the production.” Brilliant energyefficient LED lights now illuminate the rocks, river and towering trees at stage left, and, at stage right, Bongo Love’s Phoenix Rising sculpture (carved this spring from a dying decades-old cottonwood tree). It’s unlikely that you’ll fail to notice how beautiful the iconic Mishawaka Amphitheatre is, Grant acknowledged, but “directing some extra visual attention to the scenery just seemed like a wonderful way to honor the land and water that make The Mish really shine.”

Turkish Delights at Global Village Museum On Friday, September 1, the Life in Instanbul - Village of Millions exhibition will debut at the Global Village Museum of Arts at Cultures. Here, your eyes will be stunned with exhibits of photographs from Istanbul and Turkey along with vibrant and colorful paintings of Gabrielle “Gabby” Reeves, a native of Casper, Wyo., who spent time living in Istanbul. With free admission all day, the grand opening will also include a Turkish Pop-up Market from 1-6 p.m. and will feature traditional rugs, carpets, scarves, and tribal jewelry, all hand-made from Turkey. “Through Wyo-Ist, we support Turkish women, small-scale local manufacturers, and salesmen while introducing the beauty of traditional craftsmanship,” explains Reeves. “All of our products are handmade in Turkey with an emphasis on quality, sustainability, and the support of disappearing traditions.” The Global Village Museum is located at 200 W. Mountain Avenue. Museum hours are 11-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit globalvillagemuseum.org or call 970.221.4600.

Lincoln Center Offers Fresh New Season The Fort Collins Lincoln Center recently announced their new season of shows which go on sale August 9 and kickoff in September. “I am excited for Take Me to The River,” said Jack Rogers, Executive Director of The Lincoln Center, “because of the unique nature of the show — bringing together multiple generations of musicians.” The show, slated for October 26, features three Grammy-winning artists: William Bell, Bobby Rush & Charlie Musselwhite along with rappers Frayser Boy and Al Kapone. “It’s a chance to hear classic Memphis soul, and Delta blues with the region’s top MC’s,” said Rogers. Opening the season on September 7 is the banjo duo Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, who took home the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. Of their last sold-out Lincoln Center performance Rogers said, “Fleck’s supreme mastery and technical wizardry was equally matched by Washburn’s dynamic stage presence.” The genre-defying duo Black Violin storms onto the stage September 30. These classically trained violinists and their DJ mix hip-hop, rock and R&B music. “Black Violin performances are always fantastic,” said Rogers. “Where else are you going to see a group that has performed at a presidential inaugural ball and opened for the Wu-Tang Clan?” The season is peppered with other musical acts like outlaw country artist Kris Kristofferson and jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Other highlights are the comedians Jim Breuer and Mike Birbiglia and two shows with cult followings The Moth Mainstage and PostSecret: The Show. The nationally-touring Broadway shows Jersey Boys and Cabaret are also featured. “Although some may see Cabaret as a musical theater classic,” said Rogers, “in light of the state of the world, it is a devastatingly relevant work that will simultaneously entertain and provoke – which I think is the hallmark of great art.” For a full list of shows visit LCtix.com. TOUR DE FAT

Fasten your wild wings, billowing capes, eccentric tights, preposterous hats, face-paints, swirlers, twirlers, and prepare to find glitter in all nooks and crannies because Tour de Fat is coming at you for their 18th annual celebration of beer, bikes, music, and costumes. Let’s be honest, it’s the best participatory adult circus party in the land. Starting May 20 in Asheville, NC (where the second branch of NB has taken root) and ending in Tempe, AZ on October 7, the season long jamboree is spreading high vibrations across the nation. Tour de Fat will be rolling through Colorado, hitting Colorado Springs, Boulder, Denver, and, most importantly, its birthplace here in Fort Collins on September 2. The All American Rejects and X Ambassadors will be our entertainment, along with a myriad of other acrobatic and comedic acts. New Belgium has raised more than $4.5 million for partnering non-profits since its inception. This summer Tour de Fat hopes to generate more than $600,000 in support of local causes. Tour de Fat Fort Collins benefits Bike Fort Collins, Overland Mountain Bike Club, Fort Collins Bike CO-OP, and Ciclismo Youth Foundation, so be sure to grab your tickets today. Kevin Morby - Downtown Artery

Kevin Morby

In 2016, Kevin Morby came out with a gorgeously produced album, Singing Saw. Then, Morby put out this year’s redemptive City Music, a timely soundtrack for life in general. On the gospel-infused “Pearly Gates,” a pump organ, like America, chugs long, leaving the singer to wonder what’s coming our way on Judgement Day. In the Latin-sounding “Night Time,” Morby is listening to Dylan, watching life go on beneath the barrio where night buzzes by. On the album’s excellent single, “Aboard My Train,” Morby wanders his own back roads, wishing he could stay young forever. It’s not possible, so what else is there to do but plug in, letting the dissonance fly, trumpets and all. “All aboard my train,” he evangelizes, promising an answer. Morby’s in-demand collaborator Meg Duffy wails in the background and adds bluesy slide throughout. “You know,” Morby sings on the stripped-down “Downtown Lights,” “I’ve gone to live a thousand lives, and to die one thousand deaths.” In Morby’s world, time flies, and the light dies off, but the backbeat kicks in and church bells start to ring. A copy of City Music sent to a German friend who’d been down on America for some obvious reasons, resulted in the response, “Thanks, this is what I needed to hear from you guys.” See him August 25 at 8 p.m. with special guest Shannon Lay in Fort Collins – Morby and band won’t be playing spaces like the Downtown Artery much longer. LASERDOME AT FCMOD You know you’ve hit on something when people are commenting on social media looking for extra tickets to a sold out show. That’s exactly what happened with a recent Otterbox Digital Dome Theater event, LaserDome: Daft Punk show at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. Pair dance music with crazy, 360 degree laser visuals on a dome screen and you have an event that people are pretty stoked about. The back-to-back shows for Friday/Saturday night sold out on Wednesday. When people saw it was sold out, there were a whole bunch of extra ticket requests popping up. You know how it goes, we all want what we can’t have. Now, dome shows happen all the time at the museum. Since I also write the blog Fresh Air Fort Collins, I went to a pretty cool film about the outdoors, narrated by Robert Redford to benefit Poudre Wilderness Volunteers. It was awesome with a great sound system that adds to the immersive effect. It was a fantastic way to get lost in roving landscapes in the middle of a museum and remind you of how small we are as people on this planet.

18

They have stargazing and a variety of sciencebased events in their lineup, and there are a bunch of shows coming up that are perfect for kids (hello summer vacation plans…). The LaserDome series is where music and lasers go together like peanut butter and jelly. It reminded me of the Pink Floyd planetarium shows I went to in high school with a little more technological advancement with the screen visuals. Everyone packed into the dome for the

SCENENOCO.COM I AUGUST 2017

Daft Punk show and the visual sherpa for the evening let everyone know that if anyone felt nauseous “just close your eyes and you’ll realize you’re not really in space.” I don’t think I was very good at stifling my laughter on that. It was priceless and perfect. The show started and I couldn’t help but get my groove on in my seat. I looked around and everyone is just chillin’ – no head boppin’ or toe tappin’. Somehow we’d all been subconsciously challenged to not seat-dance, with the exception of a couple of girls in the front row and me. That is, until the show went on and people loosened up. By mid-show, people were clapping and cheering after each song. It began to feel more like listening to tracks at your friend’s house than a movie. It was fun and something I’d totally bring our kids to next time. They’d think it was the coolest thing ever. Check out the LaserDome schedule online at www.fcmod.org/laserdome, and come to LaserDome: Pretty Lights on 8/25 and 8/26!

AUGUST BREWERY NEWS! Three Four Beer Co.

Owner, Will Overbagh, is handing over the reigns to brewer Linsey Cornish, formerly of Horse & Dragon fame. Linsey joins a new endeavor with a fierce reputation and an excitement for the fantastic opportunity to learn and grow. Her focus is to put Three Four on the map as a brewery versus a bar. In addition to in-house recipes, she plans to bring in amazing, yet approachable outside-of-house beers.

Assistant Brewers Collaboration

The second creation by a group of area assistant brewers is an 8.3% ABV Belgian Golden Strong Ale, brewed with coriander and grains of paradise with mandarin puree. Rotating brewing amongst their locations are Wiley of Three Four, Chase of Black Bottle, Kyle of McClellan’s, Eric of Verboten, Titus of Horse & Dragon, and Grant of City Star. Stay tuned for future collaborations and release parties.

Horse & Dragon Brewing Company Old Tom’s Dark Rye

Brewed at the request of their dear friend and investor, Tom Slover, in honor of his birthday, this dark brown beer incorporates chocolatey roast from the malts with spicy rye notes and an earthy, spicy finish from the hops.

Morgan’s Savvy Peach Ale The 2017 version of Morgan’s Savvy Peach Ale, named after owner Carol Cochran’s grandfather and his love of Fort Collins, is set for release the week of the Fort Collins Peach Festival. As a sports fan and former CSU president, this light golden and hazy ale has a medium body, rounded, bready malt character with delicious Palisade peach flavors and aroma.

New Belgium Brewing Company Fat Tire Belgian White

For the first time in 25 years, NBB is adding a new beer to their Fat Tire family. Of course, well known for their iconic Fat Tire Belgian Style Ale, they’re bringing us a new Belgian beer made with Seville oranges and locally ground Indian coriander for a natural and impeccably sweet flavor.

Linsey Cornish of Three Four Beer Co

Soul Squared Brewing Company Peach Pale Ale

Brewed as their August CSA beer and available for sampling at the Peach Festival, this subtlety sweet, fresh peach flavored beer is light and easy drinking. Playing well with the peach are Centennial hops for bittering, flavor, and aroma lending a light, stone fruit aspect and the American Ale yeast for light, fruity esters.

Old Colorado Brewing Company White IPA (not yet titled)

This white IPA is a special collaboration with Denver’s Mockery Brewing, especially for those clamoring for another IPA. The experience represents a benchmark for brewer Sam, since Mockery was the first to show him the commercial brewing ropes. This beer offers light and refreshing flavors and a medium body with fruity, lessbitter hop varieties, and including Cascade, Mosaic, featuring Idaho 7. Kaarina Robson is the founder of Cheers United special events, where she coordinates VIP brewery tour experiences for professional groups. Find her at cheersunited.com or Instagram @cheers.united

Solpride is the brainchild of Carlton Pride. They pose as a reggae band but they are more a reggae/funk/jazz hybrid, an all-terrain funk vehicle navigating any musical landscape. Singer and guitarist Carlton Pride plays prickly, urgently rhythmic guitar and solos with unfettered glee, singing in an enormous, soul-shouter’s voice. He calls sax player Brandon Vigil the White Maceo, and leaves most of the soloing to him. Carl Alexander plays bass, T.J. Harris plays drums, and Aaron Oberndorf plays conga. They have a massive rhythm section, sometimes sounding like Albert Ayler, sometimes like Sun Ra’s Arkestra. Wearing tie-dyed shirt and socks, shorts, dreadlocks and a wool cap, Calrton often strolls among the audience. They play August 5 at Colorado Room at 642 S. Though the band uses influences like Earth, Wind & Fire, and Brass Construction, they always create their own unique sound. New Breed Brass Band will share the stage with Guerrilla Fanfare, an eightpiece brass band that also rocks funky tunes and won a spot at the Scene Magazine Stage at ARISE this year. The show will begin at 9 p.m., and you can get your tickets at hodishalfnote.com/event.

CANNABIS CORNER WILLIE NELSON

“Well, it’s all going to pot, whether we like it or not. The best I can tell, the world’s gone to hell, and we’re sure gonna miss it a lot…” Sung by the man himself, Willie Nelson (along with his buddy, good ol’ Merle Haggard) is the perfect medicine to ease our worried minds and, yes, that is a pun. His pure sativa strain, coined Willie Nelson, is just the strain to lighten this load of living while enhancing creativity and enjoyment of the true medicine of music itself.

NATIONAL CRACKDOWN ON LEGAL WEED?

The New York Times recently wrote a piece concerning the Attorney General of the United States, Jeff Sessions, and how even though states across the country keep saying yes to legal marijuana, he continues to say no. His task force is scheduled to release their research findings by press time, which could have implications for marijuana business owners. “Around one-fifth of Americans now live in states where marijuana is legal for adult use, according to the Brookings Institution, and an estimated 200 million live in places where medicinal marijuana is legal. Cannabis retailing has moved from street corners to state-of-the-art dispensaries and stores, with California entrepreneurs producing rose gold vaporizers and businesses in Colorado selling infused drinks.” We’ll see how this new war on drugs plays out for the US Government.

DEBUNKING STIGMAS

Due to the long-held stigma around cannabis, it has taken years for proper research to be conducted. Common myth #1: Marijuana kills brain cells. A publication of The Journal of Neuroscience sums up a study at University of Louisville proving that marijuana use does not, in fact, kill brain cells. Using high-resolution MRI scans, it was found, “the whole-brain analysis, resulted in no clusters meeting significance thresholds between daily and nonusers…. suggesting that there were no differences between nonusers and daily users in the specific regions of interest or anywhere else in the brain.”

MARLEY FAMILY BOOK - COOKING WITH HERB Remember when you just had to guess how to make pot cookies and half the time they would turn out so green and oily it wasn’t even worth it? Well, fret no more, as the wonderful ganja loving Marley’s are at it again with a brand new book, Cooking With Herb, available now from Penguin Random House. “Wellness guru Cedella Marley, the daughter of famed reggae legend Bob Marley and the face of the premium cannabis brand, grew up in Jamaica with the familiar scent of The Herb and experienced its restorative and spiritual properties firsthand. Today cannabis still plays a role in her wellness regimen, whether it’s in her hemp-based moisturizer or in a soothing morning tea, and in Cooking with Herb, Cedella shows readers how they too can experience the healing benefits of cannabis safely and pleasurably.”
