PERFORMANCE ART IGNITES CHANGE AT ARISE ARISE Festival is almost here and I can’t wait! July is full of fun and heat, but don’t wear yourself out before the first weekend in August. Sunrise Ranch in Loveland is the place to be from August 4-6 to indulge your senses and enjoy a wonderful community of creatives gathering together. From ecoconsciousness, activities for kids, the best music from around the country, workshops, yoga, theme camps, vendors, and art, the journey on the Road to ARISE has given us a glimpse into the magical world that exists for just one weekend a year. For this, our final installment, I had the honor of interviewing Lauraleigh MaQi, a multi-talented fire dancer and aerialist with Lunar Fire, who helps coordinate all the performers you see at ARISE. Lauraleigh spoke of the talent that will be at ARISE, “I bring on fire dancers, aerialists, belly dancers, spirit dancers, and something new this year: roaming entertainment. When I’m going through performer applications for ARISE I look for artists who are dedicated to their art that want to show up to inspire the world. I’m always looking to find artists who have a special relationship to their art and how they connect with the audience.” “Performance artists,” Lauraleigh continued, “like musicians, story tellers, or anyone who has a stage with an audience, have an amazing opportunity and responsibility with how they represent their art. They have a chance to inspire the audience

with the spirit of their art and represent the change they want to see on the world. In a way, being a performance artist is like being living art; reflecting dreams, visions, inspirations, or a message to the world.” Lauraleigh expressed her favorite aspect of ARISE, “The community! This festival is not just about getting a bunch of people to come out to a party, it’s about building bridges and community and creating opportunities with each other and to grow together.” This year brings some big names to the ARISE stages including Atmosphere, Lettuce, Wookiefoot, Tipper, and Rising Appalachia, and some great local bands to our Scene Magazine Stage like The Symbols, Write Minded, and Stella Luce and the lucky winners of the Rock the Scene contest: Proximity, Guerrilla Fanfare, and Rastasaurus. Lauraleigh spoke about who she is looking forward to seeing at this year’s Festival, “Ani DiFranco! Her music played a huge role in my life when I was young discovering who I was as a person and I’m really excited to hear music from

her new album that’s coming out. I’m also looking forward to Earth Guardians, Desert Dwellers, Break Science, Tierro Band, Totem and whatever Android Jones brings to the festival.” Lauraleigh has some sound advice for you, our dear readers, “Don’t miss Beats Antique. Zoe is not just one of the most inspiring dancers in the universe, but she brings so much fun and life to their show. Definitely check out Lunar Fire’s performance on Sunday. Lunar Fire is the art project I’ve been putting my heart and soul into for the last 13 years. It’s a synergistic performance of music, dance, theatre, and spirit. Fractal Tribe is a local group of superhuman inspirational beings performing choreographed aerial, acro, and fire dance acts that are always super inspiring for everyone.” These amazing performances and the incredible music at the 5th anniversary of the ARISE Festival are going to leave you breathless! Hope to see you there. Check out the full lineup and schedule of events and get your tickets here: arisefestival.com.

James McMurtry

Dead Floyd & Euforquestra at the mish, july 28 Dead Floyd is a cover band of two of rock and roll’s most notable acts of all time, The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, who will be playing a show at Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue on July 28. Their setlist is known for its unpredictability given that The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd maintain an extensive list of songs that makes it challenging to narrow down to a handful of songs from either band on its own. Based out of Fort Collins, Dead Floyd formed in the summer of 2009 and consists of the talented Charlie Humphreys (guitar, vocals), Josh Miller (bass, vocals), Stu Crair (drums, vocals), and Matt Goldberg (keys, synth). With their interpretation, Dead Floyd gives both bands the opportunity to timelessly live on for many generations by bringing the music to a live setting for all Colorado residents and guests to enjoy for years on end. Euforquestra will open for Dead Floyd, featuring special guests surely not worth missing. For additional information on Dead Floyd and tickets, visit deadfloyd.com.

James McMurtry at the Mish, july 22 Critically acclaimed tunesmith James McMurtry will be performing July 22 at Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue. McMurtry’s recent release, Complicated Game, is receiving universal praise as he effortlessly switches from a political to personal songwriter within his tracks. Just Us Kids (2008) was McMurtry’s highest earned Billboard 200 chart position. However, Childish Things (2005) comfortably spent six weeks on top of the Americana Music Radio charts in 2005 and 2006 before graciously winning Album of the Year from Americana Music Association. McMurtry’s 2009 release, Live in Europe, documented his band on their first European tour featuring special guest musicians Ian McLagan (The Faces) and Jon Dee Graham (True Believers, Skunks). Additionally, the Austin-bred musician is known for his controversial political lyrics, which has caused him to pay close attention to the troubled Trump administration. “A few years back, I put out a song called ‘Cheney’s Toy,’” McMurtry said. “It was often misinterpreted due to a reference to an unknown soldier. People thought I was calling the soldier ‘Cheney’s Toy’ when I actually was referring to then-President George W. Bush.” For tickets to see James McMurtry in Bellvue, visit themishawaka.com.

HARD Red Rocks, july 28 As part of its “Road to HARD SUMMER,” HARD events has announced its fifth annual HARD Red Rocks concerts at the eminent Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison. The festival is constantly representing, flaunting and predicting the future of music. Hot off of his most recent collaboration with YG “Pop It, Shake It,” DJ Mustard will be joining Francis for an unforgettable way to end July. In support to his most recent EP release Renegade, Destructo will be taking the stage with additional sets from AC Slater (Night Boss label boss), Wax Motif (g-house sound), and Kittens (heavy rap, future beat music). CITY BUZZ Samantha Fish Chills & Fever Album Review By Michael Emanuele

I had the opportunity to sit down with Samantha Fish last month and talk a bit about her career and her new album. Since the beginning of her recording career in 2009, Fish has released eight albums, toured extensively, and in 2012, she won the hard-earned Best New Artist award at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee. Her new album, Chills & Fever, was released in March of this year. “I took the concept of this album to Detroit were I met Bobby Harlow,” Samantha explained, “he is the producer on the album and has been in some very notable bands such as The Go with Jack White. He introduced me to a band called the Detroit Cobras, and some of the members play on Chills & Fever.” The album is a compliation of some obscure ‘60s and ‘70s compositions, including songs such as “Crow Jane” that date back much earlier. Samantha has given these songs new life. She describes it as “a rock and roll punk backdrop with New Orleans horns added to the mix.” This equates to a beautifully crafted rock-androll soul album. It takes you on a journey into the past from antique jazzy melodies to country, dance hall, punk, and a Motown vibe all in one album. Her vocals change along with melodies as easily as her guitar playing. The record flows in and out of time periods and it is very different from anything Samantha has done before. Chills and Fever is a great one to add to your playlist or, if you are like me, your CD collection. She also mentioned an acoustic album that is coming out this fall and some tour dates in Europe to support the two new albums. More online scenenoco.com, samanthafish.com

Then, your nose might lead you to the fresh baked goods and roasted coffee area, all the while being serenaded by live, acoustic music. With our Colorado sunshine, one can’t go wrong at the only outdoor artisan market of its kind in Northern Colorado. Founded in 2008 by four sisters who grew up in Niwot, CO, The French Nest hub is still going strong. thefrenchnestmarket.com

Fourth of July Festivities Fort Collins is celebrating Independence Day in style and City Park is just the place to be for it. Kicking it off strong, the Firecracker 5k begins at 7:30 a.m. Participants run a flat course that meanders from Old Town to City Park. If you are in the mood for a more leisurely activity, join in on the annual Stars and Stripes golf tournament that begins at 9 a.m. The city will gather at 10 a.m. in their red, white and blue for the 4th of July Parade with a route running eastbound on Mountain Avenue, from Old Town to Sheldon Lake. Set up your chairs alongside Mountain Ave to view the mobile entourage. City Park will be the main hub for public activities the entire day, so prepare to park on surrounding streets, enjoy the lovely stroll, and maybe make a stop along the way. The Avery Historic House is sure entertainment, hosting Streetmosphere musicians and magicians along with a variety of yard games. Local bands such as the Colorado Swing Big Band, Manabi Salsa Band, and the Fort Collins Symphony will perform. Through the rest of the afternoon, enjoy a favorite American pastime with the 34th Annual Old Timer’s Baseball Game. Dish yourself up a BBQ dinner and then head over to stake out your spot on the lawn for the fireworks show which will shoot off around 9:30 p.m. The city is sure to dazzle as brocades, crosettes, palms, peonies, and willows fill the sky with thunder and patriotic glimmer.

The Lagoon Summer Concert Series at Colorado State University is bringing some remarkable music to the Wednesdays of July. Steve Mantel kicks off the first July show on the 5th. Along with his band, he plays a wide variety of engaging covers and originals. Second in line, Union Gray is a Colorado based Texas/ Red Dirt country band. They play new and old classics that will inspire your boots to kick up some dirt on July 12. If you feel like doing some booty shaking, Mojomama performs on July 19. Fronted by female power vocalist Jessica Rowand, this funk, rock and soul band is sure to get you moving. The final Wednesday of the of the month, July 26, hosts The Coteries, a folk rock trio who will serenade you into space with their eclectic blend of acoustic guitars, mandolin, stomp box, and harmonica. Bring your chairs and picnic blankets, but don’t worry too much about packing snacks. At every Lagoon series, there are five food trucks (such as the Human Bean, A-Maize’N Kettle Corn, Umami Eatery, Austin Taco and more) set up ready to serve you some delectable dishes while you enjoy the tunes. PATIO BEER TIME!

Here come the refreshingly light, easy drinking summer beers, just in time for everyday patio weather! Here are some highlights of what’s on tap to taste this month. GRIMM BROTHERS BREWHOUSE Battle Berry Wheat- ABV 4.5% The official beer of the Loveland Liberty 5K has a slightly purple hue, a crisp, berry tartness and a mildly dry finish. The super food, Battle Berry has 400% more antioxidants than a blueberry, perfectly suitable for rehydrating.

VERBOTEN BREWING & BARREL PROJECT In Love with Summer - ABV 5.2% This American wheat ale is an early summer seasonal made with strawberries and local rhubarb. Beautifully combining sweet and tart, this recipe was modeled after the delicious strawberry-rhubarb compote owner Josh Grenz’s mother served over cereal.

OLD COLORADO BREWING COMPANY Wit - (Working title: Rocky Mountain Wit)- ABV 5.11% Upon request by a veteran patron, owner Brandon and brewer Sam thought the timing of a special veteran’s beer would be perfect for the Fourth of July. The series, Red, Wit & Blue, starts with wit base beer and adds strawberries for red and blueberries for blue. A spicy wonder, wit incorporates sweet and bitter orange peel, indian coriander, Szechwan peppercorns, and seeds of paradise. OCBC is giving back $1 per pint to veterans. Haven’t heard of Old Colorado? Location: 8121 First St., Wellington Building: Grain Elevator circa 1922 Who: The grandson of the first Fort Collins brewery owner and his wife re-opened this must-see venue and are in the midst of reviving grandpa’s nearly 15 original recipes. Summer Fun: Heading up the Beer Garden at the Wellington Fourth of July Fireworks & Main Street Summer Concert Series.

Roll in Ze Watermelons - ABV 5% Verboten’s award-winning traditional German-style gose is conditioned with Colorado-grown watermelon. The mid-summer seasonal was inspired by growing up eating watermelon with a dash of salt and the beer’s tart, tangy sweetness is reminiscent of a Jolly Rancher.

FUNKWERKS Summer Camp - ABV 5.4% Gooseberries, eaten by one of the brewers, Chris, at summer camp as a kid, inspired this sessionable Belgian-Style Wit Ale. Gooseberries replace the typical orange character, which gives it distinctly more tartness.

ZWEI BREWING ProVelo Pils - ABV 6.05% Collaborating with their neighboring bike shop in honor of the Tour de France, this export lager style is slightly stronger than the other featured beers with balanced light bready malt notes and lemony hop aromas.

MAXLINE BREWING Raspberry Basil Saison- ABV 5.8% This rose-hued, hazy beauty with a fluffy, white head, has an exuberantly full, sweet, fruity aroma and flavor that has a lightly tart and clean herbal finish. Released on their first anniversary for the second summer since their opening, this quickly became a fan favorite.

DENVER

The Downtown Artery brings us a pair of acts not to be missed this summer. Driftwood is a band native to Binghamton, New York, with members from the working town playing music with no limit to genre. Whether it be folk, old-time, punk, or rock, the band plays what they feel, and ultimately their listeners feel it too. “It’s sometimes tough to keep any sort of focus on style or sound when you have three different songwriters,” says guitarist Dan Forsyth. “But it also allows us to branch out and explore in ways other bands don’t.” Take this soulful group and pair them with one of Colorado’s favorites—Edison, and you have an intensely raw night of music. Edison, the trio who has gained immense traction since their beginnings in 2014, play a modern take on folk with lyrics that people from all walks of life can relate to. Driftwood and Edison will be playing at Downtown Artery July 1. The show begins at 7 p.m., and tickets are $10.

CLOACAS First Fridays in Fort Collins are always a fun time. This month, the fun will only continue as you head to Downtown Artery to catch Cloacas, a six-piece gypsy-jazz-theater-folk group. Yes, that is a mouthful that results in music for everyone—folk, americana, classical, jazz, and even American gothic. If you can’t already tell, Cloacas has a variety of instruments to help them achieve their unique sound including: banjo, mandolin, violin, viola, ukulele, dobro, clarinet, bowed saw, upright bass, and percussion. If their sound doesn’t catch you, just watching them juggle all their different instruments will. Catch this unique band at Downtown Artery July 7 at 6 p.m. The event is free.

JUly 13 - Hodi’s Half Note TNERTLE W/ MISS JAEDHA & JERAFF

TNERTLE is a Denver-based electro/funk/hip hop group who have been playing together for quite a long time. They began their journey in 1999 when two of the band members met in their 7th grade jazz band. From there, the friendship grew, ultimately becoming TNERTLE in 2012, and adding a few more instruments along with frequent guest appearances. TNERTLE will play everything from electro to hip hop to funk to whatever else is hitting home at the moment. Playing alongside TNERTLE will be Miss Jaedha, a local Fort Collins DJ. She has been producing electronic music for seven years, and with that experience, she manages to hit every major electronic music genre. You name it—house music, dubstep, drum and bass productions—she can make her crowd feel it. Her live performances are versatile and Miss Jaedha proves herself with each unforgettable show. You can catch both TNERTLE and Miss Jaedha along with Jerraf, a Denver-based DJ, on July 13 at Hodi’s Half Note. Tickets are $8 in advance, and $12 day of the show. SUNDAY 23 FORT COLLINS/LAPORTE

Photo by Backstage Flash Summer is a time for outdoor concerts. Enjoying sunny days and cool Colorado nights while listening to groovy tunes—isn’t that what summers were invented for? This is why we love the Thursday Night Live Concert Series brought to us by Bohemian Nights. On July 27, you can catch The Burroughs on the Old Town Square stage. The Burroughs began playing together in 2013, and their trademarked “sweaty soul music” comes together with a four-piece horn section. The Burroughs include Sean Hagemeister on guitar, Tom Amend on keyboard and organ, Brian Claxton on bass, Mary Claxton on drums, Alec Bell on trumpet, Briana Harris and Hayden Farr on saxophones, Jeremy Fallis on trombone, and Johnny Burroughs on lead vocals. Their big band stage presence is brought to life by the incredible dancing, singing, and all around amazing performance of lead singer Johnny, who embodies some late Michael Jackson moves and makes them his own. The band has performed their soulful upbeat music at festivals like FoCoMX, New West Fest, Tour de Fat, and alongside national acts like Steve Miller Band. Don’t miss their free show, 7 p.m.

SCENENOCO.COM I JULY 2017

Hello Summer!

Welcome to my favorite time of year in Northern Colorado. A time when the great outdoors beckons with sunny days, warm nights, and a myriad of fantastic activities. Festival season is upon us, and if you’re like me you start to realize that you can’t be in five places at once and the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) starts to set in. My goal as Managing Editor of Scene Magazine is to give you all the options so you can make informed decisions and hopefully mitigate some of that fear. Until we’re able to be cloned, you might just have to send your friends to events happening this season and have them report back to keep the FOMO at bay. Luckily, the talented and growing city of Fort Collins and surrounding areas are helping spread out some of the fabulous fun. With live music going on several days of the week, you don’t have to wait till Friday, Saturday, or Sunday to get your party on. Check our expanded City Buzz section and our Music Calendar for all the details. Updates will also be available Photo by MW Imagery online at scenenoco.com. This month concludes our Road to ARISE series, with the culmination of the ARISE Festival beginning for the early campers on Thursday, August 3, and the full event running from August 4-6 at Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, a mere 25 minutes from most of our Fort Collins homes. Don’t miss this one of a kind gathering of community, music, yoga, art, talented performers, and all around good times. Hope to see you all there! Stop by the Scene Magazine Stage and say hi! Happy July!

CANNABIS CORNER WEED PERFUME NOW AVAILABLE

Back in the day people used to put perfume or cologne on to mask the smell of weed. In 2017, people are finally embracing the skunky smell of the sticky icky. Perfume company Xyrena is launching what it calls the first “strainspecific cannabis perfumes.” While not everyone enjoys the pungent smell of fresh cannabis, it’s hard to not at least be intrigued given the description. “Blue Dream opens with the strain’s signature sweet blueberry aroma with just a hint of skunk and evolves into an earthy pepper scent with a lingering sweetness making the fragrance just as smooth and balanced as its flowering inspiration.” The perfume doesn’t contain any actual cannabis, Killian Wells, owner of Xyrena said, “the natural terpenes found in cannabis are utilized in the formulas such as pinene, limonene and caryophyllene.” Wells, a musician also created a song and music video, which he says was inspired by the scent Blue Dream.

OTIEL’S EGYPTIAN KUSH

Dead & Company’s own two-time Grammy winning bassist, Otiel Burbridge, is a musical fountain who has created remarkable art with many of the greats. On the band’s debut trip to Denver last year, they stopped in dispensaries which sparked up an idea that led to Otiel’s collaboration with GroundSwell Dispensary. The holy union of the two created what we now know as Otiel’s Egyptian Kush. GroundSwell is the only distributer of the strain at this moment and they posted a description of the new herb saying, “Boasting a sweet cherry flavor, this indica-leaning hybrid kicks off with a stimulating rush of energy and evolves into a body effect that sets you blissfully adrift. Oteil’s Egyptian Kush is ideal for losing yourself in a favorite song and grooving to the bass line alongside thousands of your closest friends.”

PUSH FOR CANNABINOIDS PAINKILLERS RENEWED

Due to public health consequences of abuse, the FDA announced that a powerful opioid painkiller must be removed from the market. “The abuse and manipulation of reformulated Opana ER by injection has resulted in a serious disease outbreak. When we determined that the product had dangerous unintended consequences, we made a decision to request its withdrawal from the market,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. This is the first time the FDA has taken steps to remove an opioid from the market because of “public health consequences of abuse.” The move renews the argument that cannabis and its cannabinoids could prove to be a better option for managing chronic pain. Cannabis has shown to be an effective, non-addictive pain reliever and, according to the DEA, has never caused a fatal overdose. Having legal access to medical marijuana has shown to significantly reduce opioid pain medication intake and opioid-related hospitalizations. Professors, pain doctors, advisory boards, and medical experts have argued that cannabis could address the nation’s opioid epidemic.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA AVAILABLE FOR PTSD IN COLORADO

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is now a qualifying condition for doctor-recommended medical marijuana in Colorado. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed Senate Bill 17 into law, which opens the doors for Colorado residents to receive a doctor’s OK to use medical marijuana in the treatment of PTSD symptoms. Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, spoke in favor of PTSD’s addition, namely so the state could have more accurate data on patients who were recommended medical marijuana, why they were accessing it and how they were using it. “A lot of people were using medical marijuana for PTSD but obtaining it under other diagnoses,” Wolk said. “We wanted more transparency to what those numbers looked like, what that population looked like.” It’s the first new qualifying condition added under the state’s medical marijuana law since it was implemented in 2001. The state’s eight other qualifying conditions are: cancer, glaucoma, HIV or AIDS, cachexia, persistent muscle spasms, seizures, severe nausea and severe pain.
