FALL HARVEST BREWFEST

BRINGING YOU BEER WITH PEDIGREE!

S

pring brings forth a rebirth of all things, with blossoms a snapshot of a great harvest to come. In that same vein, a tiny seed was planted in April of 2009. While watching the last of the snowfall melt and sharing a saison brew, the idea of starting a brewfest in the county seat of craft beer, Fort Collins, Colorado came to life. As Neil Young’s Harvest Moon floated overhead, so did a passing thought, why not make it a Harvest brewfest? A Fall Harvest Brewfest? And thus the bud began to take shape for what is now the 9th Annual Fall Harvest Brewfest. With ties to local brewers and breweries, Brian Hurst, co-owner of Black Lab Walking Productions, started out by contacting a few of the big hitters like Odell and New Belgium, followed by a plethora of other sprouting breweries that were new on the FoCo scene at that time. They were getting their mutual sea legs steady together, buzzing with excitement of a new foray that included a more intimate experience than big time brewfest lore. A focus on quality rather than quantity. The inaugural year began at the Sunset Event Center with a slim attendance of 180 patrons, quickly growing into larger venues and now housed at the Lincoln Center in Old Town. Each successive year has drawn in more beer lovers due in part to the uniqueness of the event along with a serendipitous pairing with Animal House Rescue and Grooming as the non-profit beneficiary. Both were in a position to collaborate as a stronger duo, utilizing cohesiveness of the Northern Colorado community and a tremendous affinity for both dogs and craft beer. The kinship seemed like a heaven-made match. The charitable aspect was just the “foam on the pint” and their motto has simply become, “Drink a Beer,

6

Save a Dog.” As a true brewer’s favorite, the event remains a draw for those that appreciate face time with the actual creator of the craft and the opportunity for brain picking over the featured pours. Unlimited samplings are offered with ticket prices ranging from $37.50 to $55, along with small bites for food pairing and food trucks for more substantial fare. For those looking to expand their palate, be sure to check out some of the new breweries on board for 2017 including Accomplice, Wibby, and Mashlab Brewing. Not a beer drinker? Sample gluten-free options from Talbott’s and Climb Hard Cider or local micro-distillery favorites from Feisty Spirits, Old Elk Distillery, and Syntax, among others. Live music will play throughout the evening starting in the main ballroom with singer/songwriter and ukulele extraordinaire, Janvi Gurung followed by the evening headliner and roots rockabilly favorites, Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene. Steve Murray will be wooing acoustic on the rooftop patio and DJ Ska will be spinning old school Jamaican 45’s. The event winds throughout the Lincoln Center, inside and out, with enough vendors to keep the lines down and your taste buds wagging. A special collaboration with Odell Brewery will feature a small batch release at the tap room on Thursday, September 21 with all proceeds going to Animal House Rescue and Grooming. Bring yourself, your pooch and a little pre-brewfest enthusiasm to kick off what will be a great reason to celebrate fall! For more information, FAQ’s and to purchase tickets, visit fallharvestbrewfest.com. For more information on Animal House Rescue and Grooming, visit animalhousehelp.org.

All the homes featured were built between 1879 and 1920, except for a 2008 built home with the spirit of Old Town in mind. The event is organized by Poudre Landmarks Foundation (PLF) which works to preserve, restore, and protect the architectural and cultural heritage of the Fort Collins area. All the proceeds sold for the tour will benefit PLF. For more information, email poudrelandmarksoffice@gmail.com, call (970) 221-0533, or visit poudrelandmarks.org. Tickets cost $25 in advance and $30 the day of the tour. Get your tickets at poudrelandmarks.org, or purchase them at the following locations: • Clay’s Ace Hardware, 1001 E. Twelve months after opening its doors to the public, the Music District is in full swing with their mission of creating community and supporting a diverse musical ecosystem. Built on the foundation of making music accessible to everyone, the vibrant hub has welcomed a steady influx ranging from professional touring musicians to curious locals. The inaugural year boasted 138 events with 5599 total event attendees who learned about the art and business of music while creating a growing musical community in Colorado and afar. The creative team at the Music District experienced rapid growth in the first year, with a grand total of 17 dedicated staff members eager to help you find your place in music, assist your bands with rehearsal space, and plan your next musical event. The Music District team is marking their first anniversary on September 30 with “The Surround Sound Bash”, a mixtapeinspired party that will feature live performances and multimedia interactives housed in different sections of the sprawling campus. Party goers are encouraged to walk through all the themed activities and explore the Music District with an immersive scavenger hunt game. The event is FREE with RSVP on their website themusicdistrict.org and open to all ages. If last year’s grand opening party is any indication of the crowd expected at the Surround Sound Bash, saving a spot via the website is mandatory for participation.

CITY BUZZ ARISE Festival grows and plans more for 2018 The 5th Annual ARISE Music Festival sold out last month ushering in thousands of fans from around the country for three days of music, yoga, workshops, and art in the gorgeous foothills of Loveland, Colorado. The weather got a little crazy, the community stuck together, the stages of performers, local acts and national headliners wowed the crowd each day into the night, and the myriad activities stretched our minds and bodies out of our comfort zones. All of this contributed to a party that every year has purpose, inspires change, and encourages us all to bring our voices to our everyday lives which gives space for others to do to the same. Only one complaint from this loyal festival attendee, and that goes out to all of us who co-create this festival together each year; do not litter your cigarette butts, straws, cups, or any other trash. Pack it in and pack it out! I encourage participants to please remember that this is always a LEAVE NO TRACE event. ARISE already announced event headliners Slightly Stoopid and Thievery Corporation for 2018 and a limited number of loyalty tickets are now available on the official event website at arisefestival.com. Or feel free to wait and spend more money on this wonderful festival - because you know you’re going to go - unless it sells out! Photo by Backstage Flash

Bohemian Offers More Support For Music Through Muse Muse, a new responsive, competitive grant program offered by Bohemian Foundation’s Music Programs is now active. Muse supports music-related organizations and activities in Larimer and Weld Counties. “Music fosters and enhances connections between people, and we look forward to supporting those connections through Muse,” said Bohemian Foundation’s Music Programs Director Tom Scharf. “There are many wonderful organizations that build community through music in Northern Colorado. Muse encourages the important work they already do, and inspires new opportunities for innovative programs centered on music.” The grant program will provide support to organizations that have music as their primary focus, or that have a music-centered program. Through Muse, Bohemian Foundation will make awards up to $20,000 to eligible 501(c)(3) organizations serving Larimer and Weld Counties. Applications will be accepted twice per year. Funding requests must align with at least one of Bohemian Foundation’s Music Programs goals: to provide youth with encouragement and opportunities to express themselves through music; to help musicians and music-related businesses grow and develop; and to increase performances of live contemporary music. Applications will be accepted beginning Sept. 8 and awards will be made in late 2017. For more information, visit the Bohemian Foundation website at Bohemianfoundation.org.

Recording Winners at Chimaera Sound Studios A Chimaera is a lion, goat and snake, in the Greek definition. According to his wife and co-owner Julie, Chris Williams, producer, engineer, and co-owner of Chimaera Sound Studios, thought the name was clever as it represents “multiple entities coming together to be One, as it is with a band.” Chimaera, jawbreaker or not, is under the parent company, Shattered Sky Music Group, which Chris describes as, “an anti-label. We do all the traditional services, including artist development, coaching, mentoring, digital media and branding, but we don’t take royalties. All the services we provide, like arranging and writing, doing mixes and masters, and what we do in the studio, artists can finance that and pay for it over time. We even do trade.” Chris came to engineering as a result of performing and recording music - as a band member, solo artist, and a studio musician, and understands what it takes for bands to unify. He has been a producer since 1992 and brings a vast array of styles and influences to each project. Chris has a mission to give the same opportunities to all new artists no matter their genre, “from punk to Elvis.” In addition to musical production, Chris also assists artists with managing the full project (recording, production, art, photography, video, social presence, etc.). Chimaera is partnering with Scene Magazine to offer a day of recording for our Fresh Talent Showcase Winner, announced at the event on December 10. Check out who they are currently working with, their studio equipment and layout, and more online at chimaerasoundstudios.com. Find out more about Shattered Sky here: shatteredskymusic.com.

CRAFTEON Blasts Bardic Black Metal at Surfside 7 The band CRAFTEON from Denver is the conception of vocalist, guitarist, and teacher of literature Lord Mordiggian who was inspired to create an entire album influenced by his favorite writer H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft’s ability to evoke brooding otherworldly horror has influenced a great many heavy metal artists from Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath to Metallica. Yet no band has ever paid tribute to Lovecraft with the same degree of scope and immersion as the appropriately named CRAFTEON. Their debut album, called Cosmic Reawakening, was recently released on August 25, and is based on classic H.P. Lovecraft tales such as “The Outsider”, “Dagon” and “From Beyond.” Lord Mordiggian commented on the release, “This recording prudently recounts an antiquarian bundle of peculiar short stories authored by the famed American horror writer, H.P. Lovecraft, featuring a blasphemous potpourri of amorphous black metal enmeshed with spurious, assonant passages of hope juxtaposed and vanquished by discordant strains of utter despair and madness.” Achieving the unachievable in crafting music to match the stories, CRAFTEON can be best described as Bardic Black Metal and for fans of Dissection, Naglfar, Lord Belial, early Ancient, and early Dark Tranquillity. CRAFTEON’s other band members are Fthaggua on lead guitar and backing vocals, Ithaqua on bass and backing vocals, and Rhagorthua on drums. Endlight and Infinite Conscious join CRAFTEON at Surfside 7 in Fort Collins on Sunday, September 3 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $7 and the first five attendees receive a free pint of Odell beer.

CITY BUZZ Pat Donohue Brings the Prairie to Our Home Town Grammy winning fingerpicker and Pat Donohue has been the lead guitar player and songwriter for The Guy’s All Star Shoe Band on the NPR favorite “A Prairie Home Companion” for over twenty years, making him one of the most listened-to fingerpickers in the world. In addition to traveling with the show and performing on the weekly radio broadcasts, Donohue plays concerts and teaches workshops at the country’s most prestigious theaters and festivals. A versatile guitarist’s guitarist, Donohue enjoys entertaining fans with intricate fingerpicking, easy wit, and nimble interpretations of old blues, swing, R&B and original tunes. His original tunes have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss and Kenny Rogers. Donohue started out playing drums in a garage band, but at age 12 he picked up guitar, learning simple chords and melodies from a Pete Seeger instructional book. The St. Paul native immersed himself in the Minnesota coffeehouses and blues venues where he could hear the guitar legends. “I was very lucky to see some of the old-timers that aren’t around anymore,” says Donohue. Taking what he learned from these blues guitar greats, Donohue has gone on to make a name for himself, releasing many albums and instructional videos. He also has joined a legendary list of notables, getting his own signature guitar model made by Martin Guitars. Traveling with the Blind Alley Troubadours Blind Alley Troubadours are a band that keeps the audience guessing. Their music integrates various styles including Americana, rock, blues, punk, country, folk and “awesomeness.” With descriptions ranging from alt-country to mountain rock to gypsy rock, their genre is not easily nailed down. They like to say, “we play whatever we feel will get you groovin’.” Fort Collins locals Blind Alley Troubadours formed in October 2013, with John-Erik on guitar and vocals, band manager David “Chewie” Rothenberg on skins, the lovely Karmen Mitchell on violin, Kyle Shelp as the official bassman, and Gideon Priegel on lead guitar. They are embarking on their first tour which Chewie says is, “the culmination of a TON of time put in over this past year practicing, getting closer, expanding our performances to the whole front range, writing, recording, and releasing an album, getting professional photos, building our internet presence, playing to ever-expanding responsive crowds, and perfecting our sound.” Their latest EP Round the Fire was recorded at Stout Studios in Fort Collins and came out in July. The seven tracks range from ballads to rousing stomp fests and showcase the talent of the band together and as individuals. Entertaining and eclectic, the Blind Alley Troubadours are poised to make a splash beyond our local music scene, so catch them while you can at the following shows, and listen to their music at blindalleytroubadours.com.

2017 Bonspiel Tournament Winter is coming (I had to say it) and will be bringing along the 2018 Olympics hosted in South Korea. However, Fort Collins will usher you a sneak peak this very month. Sure, we all know the big winter sports, but what about the more obscure ones which have been able to sustain their place on ice through the years? To what do I infer? Bonspiel! Pronounced “bon speel” and also known as “curling,” this sport is much like our version of shuffle board, except on steroids in the arctic. Originating in Scotland and very popular in Canada, this is a spectator sport for those who appreciate precision in its finest. From September 8-10, the first ever bonspiel tournament in town will be hosted at EPIC, aka Edora Pool Ice Center. 20 teams will compete for the win. Curlers may register online individually or as a team and spectators are welcome! For more information, visit fcgov.com/recreation.

Tibetan Monks Sacred Art Tour at Global Village Eight Gomang Tibetan monks, living examples of love and compassion, are bringing their message of hope and harmony to the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures from September 26 through October 1. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, they will be crafting an elaborate World Peace Mandala in the museum lobby. Using one grain of sand at a time to depict all religions in unity, they will painstakingly manifest this profound image while chanting prayers for global peace, nonviolent conflict resolution, wisdom and compassion. This ancient practice is prayer for all creatures experiencing the miracle of life flourishing on this astounding planet we continually walk with our own two feet. Afterward, the sand is wiped away, symbolizing the beauty of the impermanence of our existence. The Closing Ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, will commemorate the rite’s completion with chants and dungchen trumpets. The crowning celebration takes place Sunday, October 1, at the Fort Collins Senior Center from 3 to 5 p.m. The spectacular Cultural Pageant will showcase the monks in costume performing dances, chants, and music. Tickets are $10/person. Come experience the healing power. For more information, visit globalvillagemuseum.org or call 970-221-4600.

Highly Suspect Three time Grammy-nominated band, Highly Suspect, will be playing at the Mishawaka on Saturday, September 30. Making up the trio is Johnny Stevens (guitar/vocals) and fraternal twin brothers Rich (bass/vocals) and Ryan Meyer (drums/vocals) who are more confident than ever to take their fall American tour to another level. “It’s a family of positivity that we’re really trying to build,” said Stevens. “Our whole purpose is not just about being some famous fuckin’ band, but kind of making a movement. Making a difference for our generation who are so constantly misled. We barely made it out of the wrong mentality. We want to help. We’re no fuckin’ hippies, those days are gone. The irony is that now you have to ‘fight’ for positivity. Which is crazy but so be it. We’re strapped and ready to defend free thinking. When you come to our shows, it’s kind of like this family affair.” To see Highly Suspect and DJ Redbees at Mishawaka, visit: highlysuspect.net. Highly Suspects

Clean is the New Shock Audiences recognize Jim Breuer because they loved his characters on Saturday Night Live or his role in “Half Baked,” but that’s not why they keep coming back to see his standup. In an era of dark comedy, Jim Breuer delivers humor on the lighter side — focusing on those laughs in life that really resonate with everyone. Indeed, it’s rare to see a comedian try something as daring as clean comedy and pull it off the way that Breuer has. After commercial success with SNL and “Half Baked,” Breuer longed to step away from scripted characters and go back to his standup roots. He desired to deliver solid comedy that wasn’t dependent on shock value or stories of misery. “Being clean is the new shock,” said Breuer in an interview with Popmatters. “I feel like the last decade was the grunge era for comedians in America. I’m exhausted by it. I want to laugh. I don’t want to hear about things that suck. When you’re paying money to come and see me, it’s my job to make you laugh. And laugh hard.” Well-respected, and often described as the comedian’s comedian, Jim Breuer was named one of the “100 Greatest Standups of All Time” by Comedy Central. You can catch his show on September 15 at the Lincoln Center. Tickets start at $29.50 and are available at LCtix.com.

Black Violin isn’t an ordinary group of musicians, and they don’t pay attention to the divides between music genres. Some might think that two classically-trained violinists would focus their careers on performing in quartets, but instead, along with turntable whiz DJ SPS, Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste formed a groundbreaking group with a signature sound that is totally unique. Black Violin fuses classical technique with hip-hop, rock, bluegrass, and R&B — resulting in a contemporary sound that gives a nod to their classical roots. For more than 10 years, Black Violin has used its music to empower people of all ages, ethnic groups, and socioeconomic backgrounds. They’ve managed this wide appeal by playing with artists like Alicia Keys, Wu-Tang Clan, and Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, while also performing at events like the Presidential Inauguration Ball for Barack Obama. Their latest album, Stereotypes, takes this reach to a whole new level. “Our mantra has always been to engage the audience to look at things from a different perspective,” says Marcus. “At first, we leaned on the fact that we were different, more than on our technique — we wanted you to be confused. This time, we tried to keep our core message, but with more gravitas, more seriousness. Not just be crazy and different, but really step it up and be badass violinists.” Black Violin will bring its boundary-breaking music to the Lincoln Center on September 30. Tickets start at $15. More info at LCtix.com/Black-Violin.

Even More Philanthropy For Musicians with Mish Initiative “We want to cultivate a community of dreamers,” said Dani Grant, Mishawaka Amphitheatre owner and general manager, “and the Mish Initiative makes it easy to foster creative thinking and encourage giving.” Grant, who founded the now-dormant music nonprofit SpokesBUZZ, designed the Mish Initiative program to be simple, straightforward, and flexible – in part as a response to more traditional philanthropic efforts that require “too much paper and too many rules.” The iconic Northern Colorado venue seeks to encourage employee giving and support the local music scene through this new philanthropic program. Mish Initiative encompasses three main arenas: Mish Granted creates a grant pool of $20,000 yearly for directly supporting artists, with a maximum award of $1500 per applicant. Mish Granted emphasizes giving to musicians/ music-related projects. Mish n’ Booster will award cash and in-kind donations to organizations and events aligning with Mish values. Mish Match will pay Mishawaka employees for up to five hours per month spent volunteering, and will match employee giving up to $300 per month. The Mish Match mission is to motivate staff and strengthen community by incentivizing philanthropic action by employees. “The application for artist funding - called ‘Mish Granted’ - is literally a blank sheet of paper,” Grant said. “We want to get rid of the constraints and put the emphasis back on creativity. It’s not about how well you fill out forms or achieve arbitrary goals, it’s about what you want to create, make, dream and do.” For more information on the Mish Initiative or to apply, visit: themishawaka.com/mish-initiative.

BREWERY NEWS! Horse & Dragon Brewing Company Temple’s Grand Ale A special beer was created for Temple Grandin’s 70th birthday celebration at CSU. She requested a beer that reminded her of a caramel ice cream cone, thus a light vanilla, caramel craft cream ale was brewed. Temple made a visit to the brewery to see her beer in progress and give the fermenter a hug. Owner Carol Cochran added some caramel extract to a sample for Temple to taste, and then added vanilla. Since she liked both flavors, they both went in her birthday batch!

Harry Hughes’s Aggie Ale Named after 31 year Rams coach Harry Hughes, this jasmine and green tea infused pale ale returns. Originally released last fall to celebrate the final season at Hughes Stadium, it’s one of their most requested beers, so it’s back! This sessionable beer was brewed in conjunction with students from CSU’s Fermentation Science & Technology Program and is perfect for fall tailgating.

Purpose Brewing & Cellars

The newest brewery in Fort Collins (formerly 1933), surprised us and opened under the radar. Former 1933 brewer Zach Wilson and marketing wife Laura Wilson teamed up with New Belgium’s long time Belgian Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert and his wife Frezi for this new venture. They now operate every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12-7 p.m. with their grand opening party set for September 23 in their taproom and parking lot. Keep an eye on Facebook for food and music details, as well as upcoming special releases.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse Farmer’s Daughter Oktoberfest Lager This annual fall seasonal will release in time for Loveland Oktoberfest at the brewery September 15 and 16. This traditional Märzen lager incorporates various European specialty malts, resulting in an elegant, rich and complex malt-forward beer with notes of toasted bread, caramel, brown sugar, and chocolate.

Zwei Brewing Co.

Zwei Märzen is a toasty copper-hued fest lager brewed in celebration of Oktoberfest. Set for release on September 16 for their all day Zweitoberfest celebration; expect plenty of beer, bands and food. Prost!

Intersect Brewing

Intersect is continuing their 1st Anniversary celebration by releasing their first bottles of Peach Gose and Pink Guava Gose to liquor stores. Cheers!

Temple Grandin

Soul Squared Brewing

Farm-based Soul Squared collaborated with like-minded Boulder-based tea company Celestial Seasonings and brewed limited-release Celestial Saison for their September CSA beer (then distributed it throughout Northern Colorado and Boulder). Celestial Seasonings’ dry chamomile leaves were added and chamomile tea was infused into the beer, resulting in a nice, crisp and dry Belgian-style chamomile saison.

Old Colorado Brewing Co.

OCBC is releasing two new brews this month, Trios Belgian Pale Ale, a lightly spiced Belgian style pale ale and Just Beecuz Hefeweizen, a refreshingly light Weissbier with orange blossom and clover honey.

Gilded Goat Brewing Company Oktoberfest (title TBD) Head brewer Charlie Hoxmeier’s inspiration for this rich and toasty fall favorite was his reflection on life in Europe with his family as a teenager. These days, Oktoberfest tends to be a drunk fest where all the “Munichers” show up to consume as much beer as possible, but for GG, it’s so much more; the change of the seasons, German brewing, and sitting at long tables with your closest friends eating schnitzels. The Lonesome Days got its start in 2014, and has since evolved into a four-piece ensemble with Jonny Miller on the mandolin, Sam Parks with the guitar, Todd Lilienthal with the banjo, and Bradley Morse playing bass. Their vision is to create original music while still bringing in timeless classics. The Lonesome Days has played everywhere from intimate venues to Colorado festivals, and won awards like second place at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass Festival band competition, and first place at the 2016 UllrGrass festival.

CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY’S “WEED PACK” EARNS SERIOUS GREEN FOR LEGALIZATION EFFORTS

The infamous party game that makes you feel just a little evil has donated $70,000 in proceeds from sales of their Weed Pack to the Marijuana Policy Project. Max Temkin, co-creator of Chicago-based Cards Against Humanity, explained: “For us, this is a common sense issue of racial justice, health justice and criminal justice. State and national politics are incredibly screwed up right now, but it gives us hope to think that we can make progress on these kind of common sense issues that everyone supports.” The game makers say they will continue to fundraise for the campaign until it passes, including donating all proceeds from the Weed Pack to the organization.

GET HIGH JUST BY DRINKING WATER

PEARL2O is a brand-new product in Washington’s legal market that might be the furthest thing from pot that can still get you high. It’s a mineral water that doesn’t smell or taste like pot in any way. You can do almost anything to PEARL2O, and it will still get you high. The water can be frozen into ice cubes, it can be blended into a smoothie, and it can even be boiled while retaining the active THC and CBD, which is how one can get high off instant ramen. Each bottle of PEARL2O is infused with 50 milligrams of THC and 50 milligrams of CBD ($30 suggested retail price according to LemonHaze. com). The bottle said that six ounces has about 20 milligrams of both THC and CBD, so you can get medium high while you eat your ramen.

HOW TO BE A “GOOD WEED CITIZEN”

Now that marijuana is going mainstream, Rolling Stone put together a guide to some holy commandments for being an ethical stoner, including: share your stash, dose properly, clean your glass, and check your privilege. I would also add to that: don’t bogart, don’t pass a cashed bowl, support local women and minority-owned cannabis businesses, and plan your munchies ahead of time.
