After flipping through this Celebration issue, you may find yourself suddenly craving citrus, and honestly, same babe!

You’ll notice that orange takes center stage — not just as a color or a flavor, but as a feeling. Bright, bold, energizing, and full of warmth, orange felt like the perfect theme to kick off the year and to mirror the spirit of this year’s Woman of the Year Awards.

Oranges also carry a bit of nostalgia for me. When I was younger, my dad had a special way of prepping my oranges that I’ve never seen anyone else do. He’d cut a small hole in the top, all the way through the peel, and then carefully peel halfway through the peel around the edge of the hole, removing the orange part, but leaving a thin white ring just wide enough for your lips. Then I could squeeze the orange and drink the juice right out of the top! Once all the juice was gone, I could just tear it open from the top, and while it would no longer be in neat slices, it came apart from the skin much easier than peeling it, which was so much easier for me! It was simple, a little messy, and absolutely perfect — and still my favorite way to enjoy an orange.

One of our feature stories spotlights Estelle Grengs, a local artist whose work is instantly recognizable for its use of oranges as a recurring subject. Her paintings feel joyful and intentional, layered with meaning beyond the fruit itself. It’s a reminder that inspiration can come from the simplest things when viewed through the right lens.

Of course, we couldn’t have an orange-themed issue without having a little fun with it. Sweet Tooth brings you a recipe for candied orange peels — equal parts nostalgic and indulgent, and surprisingly simple to make. Whether you’re in the mood for something celebratory or something refreshing, there’s a sip here for every vibe. ome artists discover their calling. Estelle was simply born with it, self-described as “a painter's soul wrapped in the salt air of coastal New England.” Her earliest memory?

The smell of crayons and tempera paint in the fully stocked art room at Dover Catholic kindergarten, where openended supplies sparked something deeper than play. "Those moments were the first hints that art wasn't just a hobby — it was where I felt most at home," she recalls.

Growing up surrounded by mountains, ocean views, and brilliant fall foliage shaped Estelle's artistic eye early.

She spent two-week summer stretches at Pine Knoll Campground, fishing on the lake with her dad and swimming until sunset. "Those moments taught me to see every scene as something special and not to take the landscape for granted," 19

| Feature she says, a perspective that still guides her brush today.

Fast forward to now, and Estelle has traded New England's moodier tones for the endless sunshine of Freeport, Florida, where she creates from her own 1,800-square-foot haven: Estelle Studio and Gallery, which opened in 2021 as the realization of a lifelong dream. It's more than a workspace — it's a gathering place where she exhibits her work, hosts collectors, and teaches art techniques to students who feed her creative energy as much as she inspires theirs. "The exchange is completely mutual," she says with a smile.

The move south completely transformed her palette.

Florida introduced an entirely new world of light and color … turquoise water, lush greens, and that particular brand of sun-soaked vibrancy that can't be replicated. Her work has become bolder, brighter, and more playful, reflecting the warmth and energy of coastal life. And nowhere is that more evident than in her citrus pieces, which have become especially beloved among collectors.

For Estelle, oranges aren't just a subject, they're a love letter to Florida itself. "There's something so joyful and sunsoaked about them," she explains. While she doesn't point to one specific memory, the overall symbolism resonates deeply: sunshine, warmth, and everyday vibrancy. "They remind me of the color, energy, and freshness that surround me here, and that feeling naturally finds its way into my work." Artistically, citrus allows her to play with vibrant color and light in ways that capture the spirit of the place she now calls home.

a calculated decision — it was more an honest unfolding of how I see and feel the world," she notes, adding “I’ve always been drawn to vibrant palettes, and as I grew more confident as an artist, I started leaning into that instinct more boldly. The texture and movement in my brushwork came from experimenting, letting myself play, and trusting my emotions to guide the strokes.”

Every painting begins the same way: with color. A palette catches her attention first, setting the emotion and guiding everything that follows. From there, she blends real moments with imagination, adding her own sense of whimsy to explore the "what if." And the result is art that collectors describe as uplifting, soulful, and transportive. Whether she's painting whimsical villas, blooming oceanscapes, or vibrant fish adorned with florals, Estelle balances playfulness with coastal elegance through thoughtful composition and refined details. "That blend of spontaneity and intention is what gives my pieces their coastal charm without losing their artistic depth," she says.

Her work has found homes in luxury beach estates, boutique hotels, and galleries throughout the Southeast, while her licensed artwork reaches an even broader audience through retailers like HomeGoods, Target, and Amazon. Seeing her paintings in such diverse environments feels incredibly rewarding. "No matter where it hangs, my hope is always the same: that someone looks up at the wall and smiles."

When someone stands before her work for the first time, she hopes they feel pulled into a moment that's joyful, uplifting, maybe even magical — "like a breath of fresh air."

Looking ahead, Estelle is excited to explore mixed media and collage, layering oil sticks and new textures into her acrylic work, while melding her folk art roots with her current whimsical style.

But above all, she's simply grateful. "I feel incredibly grateful to wake up every day and create," she says. "Sharing that joy — with collectors, students, and my community — means everything to me." Sometimes we can all use a little more sunshine, and Estelle's art is certainly a ray of light for all of us to enjoy.

Yeah, babe, orange has officially arrived. Once the underdog of the color wheel, orange has completed its glow-up and sashayed straight into the world of fashion, beauty, home décor, and beyond. And honestly?

We’re here for every juicy minute of it.

For years, pink has been the reigning queen of playful sophistication. She’s sweet. She’s charming. She’s a reliable crowdpleaser. But trends evolve, and every queen eventually needs a worthy successor. Orange is stepping up … not to dethrone pink, but to reimagine what bold femininity can look like. It’s vibrant. f you’ve attended a Pensacola Mardi Gras event or crossed paths with The Zimmern Team at Levin Rinke Realty, chances are you’ve already felt the impact of Hannah Zimmern — even if you didn’t know it. As Director of Operations for The Zimmern Team and Vice President of Pensacola Mardi Gras, Hannah moves through the community with an energy that blends professionalism, creativity, and hometown pride. She may be juggling two major roles, but she does it with a smile, a purpose, and a drive to make both industries stronger and more connected.

A Pensacola resident for most of her life, Hannah’s journey took her west to Baton Rouge for eight important years. There, she earned her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University (LSU) and later her law degree from Southern University Law Center (SULC), graduating in 2022. Shortly after, she returned home — bringing with her not only a legal education but a renewed appreciation for the community roots she has always cherished.

Those roots run deep. The Zimmern Team, the family’s real estate powerhouse under Levin Rinke Realty, has been serving the Florida Panhandle for nearly three decades. As Director of Operations, Hannah steps into a leadership role that balances both residential and commercial real estate.

Her focus? Growth, organization, and strengthening community connections — three things she not only talks about but actively lives. Working within a family-run team gives her the rare opportunity to blend professional

On the other side of her very colorful world is Pensacola Mardi Gras (PMG), the nonprofit organization she helps lead with equal passion. Hannah is especially proud of this next era of PMG — one full of new events, fresh energy, and meaningful partnerships. “This year will be no exception,” she says with excitement, noting that the momentum continues to grow.

Hannah credits much of who she is to experience, mentorship, and the wisdom that comes from trying, stumbling, and trying again. “Every challenge ultimately shapes my confidence, patience, creativity, and strength,” she reflects. Finding her own rhythm hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been authentic. She learned from her parents, Tonya and Danny Zimmern, who poured their hearts into Pensacola through business, friendship, and community service. Watching them gave her a blueprint — but she’s determined to honor that legacy in her own way.

f oranges can teach us anything — and honestly, they’re underrated philosophers — it’s that sometimes you have to peel back a few layers to get to the good stuff. Ya know, like an onion … but that’s an entirely different topic!

Beneath that bright, textured exterior lies something juicy, refreshing, and full of life. And surprise: so do you.

So this is your permission slip to shed what’s weighing you down, clear out the stale energy, and make space for routines that make you feel vibrant, grounded, and fully awake in your own skin. This isn’t about reinventing yourself overnight. It’s about gently, intentionally removing what no longer serves you — habit by habit, thought by thought — until you reveal the version of you that feels the most you.

Layer One: Old Habits, Who Dis? We all have habits we cling to simply because they’re comfortable. The nightly doom scroll. The “I’ll drink more water tomorrow” promise that turns into a running joke. The tendency to say yes when your soul is screaming absolutely not.

Start small: choose one habit you know is holding you back and commit to replacing it with something nourishing. Swap the doom scroll for a ten-minute walk. Replace the “yes reflex” with “let me think about it.” Upgrade the third cup of coffee to a glass of citrusinfused water (pretty! refreshing! hydrating!). Tiny shifts, big payoff.

Layer Two: Clear the Mental Clutter Orange is the color of creativity, energy, and forward motion … none of which thrive in a mind clogged with self-doubt and stress. Take inventory of what’s buzzing around your brain. What’s a real task, and what’s just emotional fuzz?

Try a weekly brain dump. Write everything down — worries, plans, ideas, grocery lists — and then sort it like you would your closet: keep what matters, donate (aka release) what doesn’t, and toss anything that’s just taking up psychic real estate. Your mind deserves breathable space.

Layer Three: Nourish the Body That Carries You You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul, but your body loves a little extra care. Add instead of subtracting. Add one vibrant food to each meal. Add movement that feels joyful, not punishing (yes, dancing in the kitchen totally counts). Add rest when your muscles whisper for it instead of waiting until they beg.

Think of each choice as adding color back into your life’s palette. You’re not chasing perfection, you’re cultivating brightness.

Layer Four: Emotional Fresh Starts Emotions have layers too. And while peeling them back can feel messy, it’s also where the sweetest breakthroughs happen. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel without labeling it “too much” or “not enough.”

Try a monthly emotional check-in: What am I holding onto? What can I let go of? What would help me feel lighter? Maybe it’s journaling. Maybe it’s talking to someone you trust. Candied Orange Peels

W

hen life gives you oranges, make something sweet … and a little bit indulgent. Candied orange peels are the perfect treat: chewy, zesty, and irresistibly fragrant. They’re lovely on their own, dipped in chocolate for an extra touch of luxury, or sprinkled over cakes, ice cream, or even cocktails. Best of all, they’re surprisingly easy to make at home.

Ingredients 2 large oranges 3 cups granulated sugar, plus extra for coating 3 cups water Optional: melted dark chocolate for dipping

Directions 1. Prep the Peels: Wash the oranges thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, cut the peel into thin strips about ¼ inch wide, removing as much of the white pith as possible (the pith can be bitter).

2. Blanch the Peels: Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil. Add the orange peels and boil for 15 minutes.

Drain and repeat one more time. This removes bitterness and softens the peels.

3. Make the Sugar Syrup: In the same saucepan, combine 3 cups sugar and 3 cups water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.

4. Candy the Peels: Add the boiled orange peels to the syrup. Simmer gently for 45–50 minutes until the peels become translucent and tender, stirring occasionally.

5. Dry the Peels: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the peels to a wire rack set over parchment paper. Let them dry until tacky, but not wet.

6. Coat with Sugar: Toss the peels in extra granulated sugar to coat evenly. For a chocolate twist, dip one end of each peel in melted dark chocolate and let them set on parchment.

7. Store and Enjoy: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Perfect for snacking, gifting, or decorating desserts.

It wouldn’t even be classic red. No … confidence is orange. Bold, warm, alive, and absolutely unmissable. Orange doesn’t tiptoe into a room; it announces itself with a smile, a spark, and a little extra swish in its step. And there’s real psychology behind why this vibrant hue makes us feel just a bit more fearless.

Orange sits right between red and yellow on the color spectrum, and it borrows the best qualities of each. From red, it inherits passion and power. From yellow, optimism and joy. The result? Julie Porterfield CEO, Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center Miramar Beach, FL You’ve dedicated your career to supporting vulnerable children.

What first inspired you to pursue advocacy work, and how has that motivation evolved over the years?

Prior to my career at the Children’s Advocacy Center, I worked at the State’s Attorney’s office for 17 years. During that time, I became a victim advocate, walking alongside crime victims. I had the opportunity to help those who had been through the worst experiences in their lives from survivors of murder victims to sexual assault victims, both children and adults. I had the privilege to assist those in need of support, sitting with them in their grief, listening in silence, to be a voice when they no longer had the strength to speak. Over the years, it became clear it was not just a job but God’s calling on my life, to advocate for the vulnerable.

For readers who may not be familiar, what is the mission of the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, and what does your role as CEO look like on a daily basis?

Our mission — We seek to heal and prevent the trauma of childhood abuse and neglect by providing advocacy, childfriendly therapies, and a safe environment for kids to feel seen, heard, and understood. We restore lost innocence, provide hope, and make a difference in all the lives we touch.

We are blessed to have two Centers, one in Niceville (opened October 2000) and the Pierce Family Center in DeFuniak Springs (opened April 2016). Since our inception, we have served over 20,000 child victims of abuse. Since 2017, our school prevention program has been reaching approximately 17,000 students per year.

As CEO, the days focus on meeting the needs of the children and families. The day may mean seeking funding through grant writing, meeting with a donor, or speaking to a community-minded organization. The day may mean meeting with partner agencies, program staff, community leaders on how we can further our mission so we are one step closer to children living free of abuse and neglect. There are those special days visiting with children in our front lobby. And then there are the very hard days, when we all are lending our hearts and hands to somehow make a difference in the lives of those who have suffered, sometimes unimaginable abuse, abuse that just breaks your heart.

| The Advocate Many people feel a pull toward helping their community but aren’t sure where to start. What do you believe are the most accessible ways someone can begin advocating for children and families in need?

If someone is interested in making a difference in their community, the first step is finding their passion. How are they being led to serve? If the passion is advocating for children and families in need, the best place to start is to visit the ECCAC website and explore the vast opportunities.

Advocating can take different forms. It may be a donation. It may be coordinating a drive to meet a specific need. It may be volunteering, ranging from assisting with special events or front desk to participating as a board member. Of course, I would love to chat to anyone about the work we do and how they can be a part of our team to work toward ending child abuse.

What is one misconception people often have about child abuse or child-advocacy work, and how do you wish the community understood it differently?

Perhaps not a misconception but a difficulty to wrap the mind around abuse. It’s hard to imagine someone molesting a young child, or severely physically abusing a child, placing a child’s hand on a stove burner, someone taking the life of a defenseless child. Well, it is easier to turn off the TV, to scroll past the social media news. I know. I want to do the same. I want people to know it is happening in our community. The children are real. The hurt is real. It’s through programs like ours that we are able to change the trajectory of a child’s life.

You’ve seen firsthand how trauma affects children. What keeps you hopeful, and what moments remind you of the importance of the work being done at the ECCAC? The children keep me hopeful. The children inspire me to keep fighting. A few months ago, I spent time with a young adult who once was one of “our” children. She is strong, passionate, and driven. She shared with me how much the Center meant to her. The support, the love, her therapy helped her heal from abuse that stole her innocence.

The Center was a place of safety. She said she held on to something from the Center. It was the cookies made freshly each day. She then spoke so profoundly saying her traumatic experience helped shape her into the person she is today. I did not know how to respond yet felt honored for being a part of her journey.

Can you share a program, initiative, or recent milestone at ECCAC that you are especially proud of?

In 2024, statistics showed there was an alarming number of infant deaths due to unsafe sleep environments in our communities. Tragic deaths preventable through education and resources. Through the generous gift from the Dugas Family Foundation, our Safe Sleep, Save Babies initiative was “birthed.” We believe EVERY baby deserves a safe place to sleep. The program’s target population is new and expectant parents. Participants attend an in-person class empowering www.ScarlettMag.com

them to make safe and smart decisions regarding where and how to put their babies safely to sleep. Upon completion, parents are given a crib, mattress, fitted sheet, and other educational resources. My favorite gift given is a onesie saying “this side up”. We are confident through this initiative we will save babies!

Community partnerships are essential to your mission. What types of support — from individuals, businesses, or volunteers — have the greatest impact on the children you serve?

The CAC model is based on the premise of agencies working together to wrap services around child abuse victims and their families while holding offenders accountable. We are blessed to live in a community where law enforcement agencies such as the Office of State of Attorney, Department of Children and Families, and Child Protection Team strive to make children and families whole and have been putting the bad guys away for over 26 years. We are honored to work alongside all of our agency, community, and not-for-profit partners.

We would not be able to do the work we do without the support of individual donors, businesses, and community organizations. Their gifts at every level ensure our team can restore childhoods often lost to abuse. Their gifts have allowed us to provide prevention education to students, grades K-5, both in Okaloosa and Walton counties.

Education empowers children to protect themselves in a world where parents can no longer.

Volunteers make a difference. From those who work in our front lobbies, to managing the clothing closets, to those working events, their gift of time furthers our mission. We are seeking more volunteers, especially for events.

If you could encourage every reader to take just one action this month to help protect or uplift a child in their community, what would it be?

Choose a children’s charity. Reach out. Donate your time, give a gift, coordinate a drive to meet a need. Every small act of kindness has the power to create a greater reaction – transforming lives and communities.

Looking ahead, what is your vision for the future of ECCAC and child advocacy on the Emerald Coast? Are there goals or upcoming projects that excite you?

My vision is to one day hang the closed for business sign at both of our Centers because all children are living free of abuse and neglect. Every build, every program, every initiative is leading us a step closer. The future holds more prevention initiatives to protect children from water safety to look & lock. Our goal is to create community-wide campaigns to engage the community in the protection of children.

Children deserve no less!
