Are We There Yet?

P

ack it up, gals — summer vacation is here! And whether you’re vacay’n it or staycay’n it this year, we’ve got a little something for that in this Vacation edition! Between Overcoming Vacation Anxiety, Get Ready with Me waxing tips, and Body Type: Swimsuit Edition — your tropical senses will be tingling! The biggest, most memorable vacation I’ve taken to date would definitely be a cross-country family road trip spanning 9 states, 7 days, and lots of tourist gift shops. The main destination was the Grand Canyon (and they are not joking, it really is!), but there were so many equally unique stops along the way that really made the whole trip magical. There were big stops like the Petrified Forest National Park and the Lowell Observatory in Arizona. And there were quick stops like Route 66 photo ops, graffiti fun at the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, and Meteor Crater in Arizona. We stopped in Roswell, New Mexico, to visit the International UFO Museum and Research Center, and bought a cowboy hat in Dallas, Texas. There was a moment in the very first day of the trip when we’d been on the road all day, painfully slowly (and grouchily) making our way up to Memphis, Tennessee, for the first stop through what felt like constant interstate construction when I thought to myself, “Well, we’re just not ‘travel people.’ Some adventurous souls will retire, buy an RV, and live life on the road searching for new and exciting adventures. But those souls are not us. We are not those souls.” Of course, by the end of the journey, we were talking about all the things we would do “next time” … And I think that is the sign of a good vacation or staycation. If you can keep remembering that the point of it all is the journey and the destination, it all just falls into place. Or it doesn’t. But, it doesn’t really matter as much because it’s all part of the journey. Whether it’s right around the corner or miles from home, I hope you can find a special little getaway to break out a good summer read, meet up with some friends, or just create your own tropical vibe. Happy summer, ladies! At Scarlett, we love bringing you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health. isney can be credited with a lot of things: the rise of the princess, the idea that fairytale romance does exist … and the popularity of “tiki culture.” You read that right. “The tiki subculture is based on vintage and tropical designs, and it’s an ambiance that is relaxing, vibrant, and fun!” says Haley Blaise, who owns Cruisin’ Tikis Destin with additional locations in Pensacola, Orange Beach, and Panama City, with her husband. “It really gained popularity when Disney put it on the map with the Enchanted Tiki Room in the early 1960s. Then, Greg Darby — the CEO and founder of the original Cruisin’ Tikis — increased its exposure by making tiki bars floating and mobile, bringing the ‘tiki experience’ to people rather than them having to try and find a tiki dive bar.” Naturally, Greg started his company close to home — in his backyard, in fact — right on the New River in Fort Lauderdale. But for Haley and her husband, it all started in Key West where one of Haley’s relatives saw one of the floating tiki bars before calling her husband to tell him of the possibilities. “I loved the idea, so I told my husband to call,” Haley says. “He did and immediately struck up a great rapport with Mr. Darby. With my husband's boating and mechanical background, I was comfortable giving it a go.” So comfortable were both with the idea, in fact, that six years ago, Haley and her husband moved their three kids from Vancouver, Washington, to cash in on the floating tiki bar concept themselves. Since the first boat was launched in July of 2018,

19

6/29/23 10:05 AM

they’ve seen that concept proven successful. “We believed in it and knew that if there was any chance that we could supplement my husband’s offshore income and change our lifestyle, it was worth a shot,” says Haley, a native from Crescent City, California, registered with the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation and raised in Portland, Oregon. Haley and her husband had been married in Pensacola in 2009, so the couple had experience with the area. Being ready for a change, they decided that the Emerald Coast was the perfect place to begin their new venture. Over the past five years, the Destinbased business has increased its fleet from the original boat — Boom — to include Shaka, Laka, Lono, Brizo, Kané, Kumu, Kao, and Skoden. They have also opened additional locations in Orange Beach, Alabama, Pensacola Beach, and most recently Panama City Beach. The scary part of owning any business is, of course, the fear of failure. But clearly, the Blaises are doing something right. “Our business model is designed from a vacationer’s perspective,” she explains. “In other words, we include the boat captain and everything you might need besides your beverage of choice. I believe it's successful because we, as owners, still oversee a lot of the small details that improve the experience for our guests. From making sure we have an experienced and charming bunch of captains to seeing that our work atmosphere is as pleasurable and enjoyable as possible for all. We are also forever tweaking the experience in favor of the guest. We have decorated our docks, put torches on

21

pilings, and sell pertinent accessories they might need. We think about what we would personally wish was an option and try our best to include it.” Of course, running a successful business also depends on a personal investment as well as a financial one, and Haley seems to have that

in spades. “The work just makes me happy,” she says. “The impact that we have on our guests is limitless, so we pride ourselves on our repeat guests. There’s a good chance that our guests will never forget the amazing experience that we can give them, and we make it as amazing as possible so that memory is an incredible one.”

Long term, Haley and her husband want simply to corner the market. “We are here to stay,” she says. “Imitation after imitation may come along, but they will never replace the quality and originality of our experience. Our goal is to continue to provide a safe and fun service to our guests — both tourists and locals alike

— that also provides sustainability for our local economies.” In addition to running Cruisin’ Tikis Destin, Haley keeps herself busy on dry land raising her three daughters, taking care of her two dogs, Zucchini and Roxy, and teaching pre-professional set classical ballets at Northwest Florida Ballet as well as serving as the Ballet Mistress of Northwest Florida Ballet. “I was previously a professional ballet dancer and then a professional contemporary dancer with various dance companies in the Panhandle and the West Coast,” she says. ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more. 27

orn and raised in the charming town of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Whitney Lee’s journey has taken her on a transformative path, leading her to new adventures and opportunities. Though not a far distance, her recent move after living in Destin for 15 years to become a Downtown Pensacola resident feels like a whole new world. Whitney is a woman of ambition and drive with an enduring passion for her work and community. As the Founder and Principal of True Story, a PR and marketing agency specializing in the hospitality, product, and service industries, Whitney has carved a name for herself in the competitive business world. True Story thrives under her leadership, delivering exceptional results for their clients locally and across the U.S. In addition to running her agency, Whitney also hosts True Story: The PR Podcast, where she shares marketing insights, tips, and inspiring stories from brands all over the nation. Reflecting on her upbringing, Whitney recognizes the invaluable role her parents and grandparents played in shaping her into the woman she is today. With their unwavering support, both emotionally and spiritually, she was set up for success from an early age. Whitney understands the rarity of having such a strong support system in today’s world and is immensely grateful for it. From a young age, Whitney’s passion for being involved and connected in her community was evident. Her love for people and innate ability to connect with others made her a natural fit for a career in public relations. Working in PR allows her to create strategic partnerships, foster relationships, and help gain visibility for talented individuals and businesses. When asked about the advice she would give her younger self, Whitney emphasizes the importance of listening to one’s intuition and taking action saying, “Get out of your head and make moves based on that little voice that’s inside of you. Even if it’s hard, don’t question it.” She encourages others to trust their instincts and act upon that inner voice. Even if the decision feels uncomfortable or brings about sadness, she believes that the intuition within us is a divine guidance that is never wrong. True Story’s sole mission is to help businesses creatively connect with potential clients, customers, and guests that align with the services they provide. She considers it a privilege to help business owners thrive and grow, understanding that their businesses are their livelihood. She doesn’t take that responsibility lightly. When asked about her proudest accomplishment, Whitney doesn’t hesitate to mention building her own business. It took her years to fully grasp the magnitude of what she

has achieved and to appreciate the courage it takes to start and grow a successful agency. With True Story, she has created a platform for herself and her team to make a lasting impact in the industry. Looking for inspiration in her life, Whitney turns to her mother, Bethany, a remarkable woman who embodies strength, independence, and compassion. A nurse, athlete, and cancer survivor, her mother’s tenacity and empathy serve as a constant reminder of the power of resilience and kindness. As a leader, Whitney finds immense joy and fulfillment in helping her team members grow both professionally and personally. Witnessing their skill sets expand is rewarding, but seeing their confidence blossom and transform on a personal level is what brings her the greatest pride. The bond between Whitney and her team members goes beyond the professional realm, as they become a true family.

isty Rae Ruthrauff may be a native of a small town in Ohio, but she found her true home in Navarre Beach, Florida. She grew up in a family of four girls, inheriting her mother’s energy and her father’s tenacity. Currently, she serves as the Advertising & Brand Manager for the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Tourism Department. Simply put, Misty Rae’s occupation is the community, and she takes pride in showing the people and places that make this area unique and connecting visitors to new adventures on the water. While she has lived in many places, she has never seen a community with so many active people who passionately care about their mission. As she puts it, “It is easy to get involved when you are surrounded by highly involved people.” Over the next five years, Misty Rae plans to continue giving back to the community by volunteering her time and resources to various organizations and initiatives that align with her passions. Her unwavering commitment to the community is inspired by her love for the sea and her desire to preserve it for future generations. Misty Rae has proudly served with professional organizations such as the Florida Public Relations Association and Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, and nonprofits like the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation and Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation. She has also been involved in generating multiple community-wide beach cleanups and would like to tackle more projects that help foster the beautiful beaches and marine environment. While it’s her nature to be humble, anyone who knows her will tell you that her accomplishments are indeed undeniable. She has had many career milestones that start and end with a call to her mother to share her excitement. She is very proud of her career path and how it has always aligned with her passions, making accomplishments feel natural to her. When asked what advice she would give to her 20-year-old self, Misty Rae replied, “Stay true to yourself and follow the people that feel like sunshine. Also, buy land in Holiday Isle.” Taking a little of her own advice, Misty Rae and her husband invested in a waterfront lot a few years back and built what they call their “boujee surf shack.” It certainly came with blood, sweat, and tears, but that hard work makes the pride so much more heightened. Having access to the Gulf and the sound every day is an absolute dream come true. Misty Rae hopes she will never be desensitized to that feeling and even admits, “I do pinch myself every morning still while waking up in my dream home.” With a solid group of childhood friends that are her foundation of female influence, Misty Rae is grateful to have valuable connections with many incredible women. Through all the paths life has taken them, it is a core group of individually successful, uniquely different, but beautifully bonded females that remind her no matter what shoe you are wearing – boots, heels, or flip-flops, keep moving forward with grit and grace.

orn in Oakland, California, Donna Tashik’s hometown is Pascagoula, Mississippi. She currently resides in Niceville, Florida, where she is the Executive Director for Fresh Start for Children and Families, a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive educational and housing programs for homeless families with children. Aside from her day job, Donna is also an active member of several organizations, such as the Emerald Coast Foundation, the Rotary Club of Fort Walton Beach, the Emerald Coast Music Alliance, the Fort Walton Beach Chamber, 100 Women Who Care, and is an Honorary Commander at Eglin for the 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron. Recently, she joined the Okaloosa SART Committee to fight against sex trafficking. When asked about where she gets her strength, Donna said, “forged in fire” comes to mind! Her faith in God leads the way. She also credits her father as a huge influence. Her father was the hardest working person she has ever known but always had time for his kids and fun. He instilled in her the value of living a life of integrity and treating everyone equally. However, it was her husband, John, who gave her the encouragement, support, and freedom to enter into the world of nonprofit. Donna describes her work in nonprofit as the most rewarding work she has ever done. She is known to be tough, and she says that nonprofit work is not for the faint of heart, nor for those counting work hours or looking to get rich. She is proud of the work she does and is

6/29/23 10:10 AM

always looking for ways to make a difference. More inspiration to do good came to Donna in the form of an unexpected friendship and a couple of very run-down group homes at the Arc of the Emerald Coast. In 2008, during the recession, Donna and her husband both worked for their construction company, J. Tashik Construction Corp, and were looking for something meaningful to do with their time while projects were slow. They found out that the group homes at the Arc of the Emerald Coast were in desperate need of sprucing up through Development Director and now friend, LA Woodall. Donna grabbed a girlfriend, Krista Jackson, and organized an extreme makeover using military volunteers over a long weekend. From that moment on, Donna was officially hooked and started working for the Arc a few years later. One of Donna’s biggest female influences is her sixth grade teacher, Sally Tomlinson. Sally was young, single, and a semi-professional golfer on the side. She was the first independent, strong-willed woman Donna had ever met, and she took a special interest in her. Sally entered some of Donna’s writing in a contest, and she won. Sally’s confidence, strength, and kindness showed Donna the kind of woman she wanted to be one day. Donna adores her community and loves to give back through her work. She volunteers on Boards, helps new nonprofits find their way, and is a firm believer that support should start on a local level. She pays attention to the local problems, local elections, and helps her neighbors. In the next five years, she hopes to help solve the current affordable housing crisis and find affordable rentals for each family at Fresh Start. She also hopes to retire and have more time to volunteer for her favorite organizations. Donna doesn’t consider her greatest accomplishment to be her own, but the kind, talented, and caring people her four kids have become. She takes great pride in their achievements. And while she does not consider herself a leader, Donna admits that if she has ever inspired anyone to do more, be more, give of themselves more, and to know that miracles can happen, then she is thankful.

Annmarie McArthur Owner, The Board Chef Fort Walton Beach, FL

photography by: Jen Deeb, Go With The Flow Photography

A

nnmarie is a woman who has worked hard to get where she is today. Born in Manhattan, New York, she now resides in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where she offers private chef and catering services with a specialty in artisan charcuterie and cheese through her company The Board Chef. When asked how she became the woman she is today, Annmarie simply noted, “By working, working, and working some more.” However, her journey to where she is now was inspired by a particular moment in her past. She recalls, “Many years ago, I hired a gentleman who had been incarcerated. I was his 63rd interview, no one would hire him and if he didn’t get a job very soon, he was going to be thrown back in jail. There were things he couldn’t do due to the terms of his probation. My gut told me to just take a chance. It was extremely hard. For both of us. There were lots of difficult days, and lots of amazing days. Many tribulations and trials dealing with probation officers who were very unkind. But we did it. We worked through all the obstacles his officers threw at us to the point that, years later, he was released from any obligations to the state and the government. This hire, and the relationship we still have to this day, is absolutely inspirational. That no matter how hard the work, working together can be a blessing beyond comparison. Both of our lives were changed for the better, and we are both bolder and richer humans as a result.”

6/29/23 10:11 AM

If she could give her 20-year-old self advice, it would be to take chances and be bold. One of Annmarie’s proudest accomplishments was starting her first company, Annmarie’s Catering, a corporate catering company in Austin, Texas, in 1989. She grew it to be the largest company of its kind in Austin at the time and sold it 18 years later. Growing a business from the seed of a dream to the point of being able to sell it was definitely one of her proudest accomplishments. When asked about her biggest female influence, Annmarie stated that she has never had a strong female influence in her life. Instead, her dad has been her biggest role model. He’s an exceptionally brilliant man who has instilled in her a work ethic and drive that is unparalleled. Annmarie stays involved with the community, in part, through being a proud Destin Rotarian. She partners with other Rotarians to give back to the community, which she feels is such a blessing and a fun way to make a difference. Another proud accomplishment for Annmarie is the leadership and guidance she’s been able to impart on her team. Over the years, some of her employees have opened their own businesses and been successful, and she remains in touch and close with people who worked for her 30 years ago, which truly is a reward in itself.

A.2 Few Good Men.4

en — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

uilding our communities is the best way to ensure a positive environment to call home. Matt Algarin grew up with a mother who was a strong proponent of giving back and serving the community. He learned to give back through sharing his time, serving on a Board or in the community, or giving to organizations financially. It is incredibly important to be involved wherever and whenever possible. Sadly, Matt’s mother passed away in 2012, but she continues to be his greatest female influence. Throughout her life, she was dealt setback after setback, but she never let those challenges get her down. She had an uplifting way of thinking and staying positive no matter the situation. Matt will always admire his mother’s strength and do his best to carry her positive spirit with him. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Matt now lives in Destin, Florida, where he works as the Tourism Director for Walton County. He serves on a variety of Boards including the Florida Public Relations Association Northwest Florida Coast Chapter, Beaches International Airport Board, Explore Northwest Florida, and the Northwest Florida Beaches Council. He understands the great need to be involved with the community so he prioritizes his involvement with local organizations. Being able to make a difference through his time and efforts is a rewarding process that Matt does not take lightly. Before beginning to work with the Walton County offices, Matt worked in the magazine and newspaper industries. He spent time as the Editor of both The Destin Log and The Walton Sun. In 2017, he moved over to the Fort Walton organization and most recently served as the department’s Director of Communications. Upon being named as Tourism Director, Matt expressed how excited he was to share the stories of what makes Walton County a truly special destination. He wholeheartedly embraces the community and seeks out ways to help it grow. It is his job to support the county’s colleagues, friends, and families by creating a thoughtful visitor economy. Being named Director of Tourism is his greatest professional accomplishment, and he is proud to play an influential role in the success of his community. Looking back, Matt would tell his

20-year-old self to be more confident in his own abilities and not to second guess his decisions. It is probably fair to say that some of us would kick our younger selves for the decisions we made but that is hindsight. The best we can do is move forward. Being a father is Matt’s greatest personal accomplishment. He could not be more proud of his son and the person he is growing into. His son is about to start kindergarten so Matt is really trying to focus on taking advantage of these crucial years and be as present and active in his life as possible. He will continue to support his current community involvement but most of his time outside of the office is spent with his family. Raising strong children and teaching them to serve their communities is a great way to invest in the future. Matt hopes that anyone who has worked with him professionally has learned something new and grown both professionally and personally. As a leader, one of his main goals is to always empower his team to be themselves and to be bold in their ambitions and decision making. Matt hopes they would say that he encouraged them to learn continuously and to appreciate the small things.

Stephon Jackson

Owner, The Savage Project Collective Dance Co. Santa Rosa Beach, FL

photography provided by: Stephon Jackson

S

tephon Jackson, a California native, has made a name for himself in the world of dance as the owner of The Savage Project Collective Dance Co. in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. His journey toward becoming a successful dance studio owner is one filled with passion, perseverance, and a deep desire to give back to the community.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Stephon was exposed to the world of dance at a young age. He was fascinated by the power of movement and the ways in which dance could tell a story. As he got older, he began to realize that dance was not just a hobby but a calling. He was inspired by the stories of talented individuals with special abilities who found a voice through the arts. It was this inspiration that led him to pursue a career in dance and eventually open his own studio.

Stephon’s passion for dance has been the driving force behind his success. He believes that no matter what obstacles may come his way, he must continue to push himself to achieve greatness. If he could go back in time, he would tell his 20-year-old self to never stop striving for excellence, no matter how difficult the journey may be. One of Stephon’s proudest moments came when he appeared on America’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance season 12, with the Academy of Villains company. It was a validation of all the hard work and dedication he had put into his craft. However, Stephon’s greatest source of pride comes from simply being able to dance. For him, there is no greater joy than expressing himself through movement. When it comes to influences, Stephon looks to his mother as a source of inspiration. She is a strong, independent woman who has always put others before herself. She was also a great teacher, and this has had a profound impact on Stephon’s own teaching style. He strives to be a great teacher, just like his mother. Giving back to the community has always been important to Stephon. He holds classes for dancers with disabilities and has added programs that cater to kids who may not come from wealthy or stable homes. He has also created a safe space for the arts in the community of Walton County. Over the next five years, he plans to continue to give back to the community by expanding his programs and providing even more opportunities for young people to discover the joy of dance. Under Stephon’s leadership, many dancers have thrived and gone on to tour and perform on amazing shows. He has trained countless dancers who have looked up to him and been inspired by his dedication and passion for dance. Stephon’s journey has been one filled with challenges, but he has always stayed true to his calling. For Stephon, dance is not just a career, it is a way of life.

eremy Ruffin is a man on a mission, a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative by day and a Motivational Speaker and Author during his free time. Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, he currently resides in Milton, Florida. Throughout his life, Jeremy has been inspired by his father along with Willie Spears, Ryan Dean, Eric Thomas, and Steve Wilmer. These individuals have encouraged him to get involved in his community and to be an inspiration to those who need it most. When asked what advice he would give to his 20-yearold self, Jeremy emphasizes the importance of enjoying life by doing what is right, working hard, investing in a great retirement account, and waiting to marry the person God has for you. He also stresses the importance of building a strong relationship with Christ and finding one’s purpose in life. One of Jeremy’s proudest accomplishments to date is winning the “Emerging Leadership Award” in Santa Rosa County through the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce. This recognition is a testament to his dedication and hard work within his community. Jeremy’s biggest female influences are his mother, sister, and wife. His mother’s prayer power and genuine desire to see him succeed have been a guiding force in his life. He also attests that his sister’s honesty and financial support have been invaluable. Jeremy credits his wife’s unwavering support of his dreams, her encouragement, and her ability to challenge him to be a better version of himself as being instrumental in his personal and professional growth. Jeremy is a man with a big heart who is committed to giving back to his community. In November, he organized a food giveaway that provided food for more than 250 families and “wants to continue to give to those who need extra care and support.” He has also donated food and clothing to the local Juvenile Justice Center and has spoken to youth, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and make positive choices. He pledges his commitment to these causes stating, “I will continue to do the food giveaway because so many people are in need. I will continue to speak to those who are in need of encouragement.” His leadership impact on those around him can be seen in the success of others. He takes great pride in seeing those

he has inspired go on to lead and teach others, saying “I believe those around me have done well because I have seen them in turn lead others, and then tell me that they are doing that because of things they learned from me personally. That is the ultimate sign of success when you can train someone to do what you are doing, and they start teaching others.” Jeremy’s dedication to his community, his unwavering faith, and his commitment to helping others make him an inspiration to all who know him.

hen it comes to fashion, there seems to be a new trend popping up every other day. But in the age of digital trends and anything-goes self-expression, why not lean in and have some fun! Picture yourself strolling along the picturesque Gulf Coast, where two distinct coastal fashion tribes emerge: the Coastal Grandma and the Coastal Cowgirl. Prepare for a delightful clash between tradition and western flair that promises to captivate your fashion senses. So which one are you? Well, babe, grab your sun hat and favorite iced drink, and let’s find out!

Coastal Grandma Style

Ah, the Coastal Grandma — a beacon of comfort, practicality, and timeless elegance. This style gracefully rebels against fleeting trends, opting for classic silhouettes and vintage-inspired pieces that embody a refined sophistication. Picture a muted color palette that blends harmoniously with the coastal breeze, as fabrics like cotton and linen effortlessly drape over your sun-kissed skin. When it comes to the Coastal Grandma style, it's all about the details. Think feminine dresses and skirts with modest lengths, flowy blouses that dance with the wind, and lightweight cardigans perfect for those mild coastal evenings. And let's not forget the accessories! Pearl necklaces and delicate brooches add that touch of refinement and personality completing your ensemble. As for footwear, opt for sensible choices like loafers or low-heeled sandals, ensuring both comfort and style. Intricate details such as embroidery, lace, and delicate floral prints that add an extra layer of elegance to your look. Thanks to timeless fashion icons like Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda, and even Anne Hathaway and Taylor Swift, along with the power of social media, the beloved Coastal Grandma aesthetic has experienced a well-deserved renaissance, inspiring fashion enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Coastal Cowgirl Style

Now, imagine the Coastal Cowgirl striding across the sand, exuding a rugged, independent spirit with a touch of seaside charm. This fusion of western elements and coastal influences brings together the untamed wildness of the West and the serene beauty of the ocean. Denim takes center stage as jackets, vests, and jeans become your go-to wardrobe staples. Flowy bohemian tops and dresses with western-inspired details effortlessly marry the coastal allure with cowgirl panache. Accessories play a vital role in the Coastal Cowgirl style. Wide-brimmed hats and leather belts add a dash of flair, while fringe, and suede infuse your ensemble with texture and personality. And of course, the perfect footwear choice completes the look — whether it's classic cowboy boots or ankle boots with a western twist. Get ready to embrace your adventurous side with this freespirited style. The Coastal Cowgirl aesthetic has garnered recognition thanks to celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Dua Lipa who have fearlessly embraced it. As the style gains popularity, trendsetters have shared their interpretations of the cowgirl aesthetic, inspiring fashion enthusiasts around the globe to embrace their inner cowgirl. So, now that you have the basics, do you even want to choose? The Coastal Grandma, with elegance and timeless appeal, meets the Coastal Cowgirl, who exudes a bold, adventurous spirit. These contrasting aesthetics draw inspiration from different time periods and regional cultures, resulting in distinct attitudes toward fashion and self-expression. Believe it or not, the Coastal Grandma and Coastal Cowgirl styles share more in common than meets the eye. Amidst the clash, why not take the best of both worlds and create your own hybrid look that defies conventions? Mix and match elements from Coastal Grandma and Coastal Cowgirl fashion to curate a truly personalized ensemble. Pair a flowy bohemian dress with a delicate pearl necklace and cowboy boots for a whimsical blend of elegance and western charm. Or, take a classic Coastal Grandma cardigan and pair it with denim jeans and a wide-brimmed hat for a Coastal Cowgirl twist. The possibilities are endless! Embracing individuality and breaking free from the boundaries of traditional fashion norms allows for the evolution of personal style. Who says you can't be both a Coastal Grandma and a Coastal Cowgirl? Let the two styles inspire you to make waves along the coast! 49

hether you’re going on a family trip, a girls’ weekend, or a solo road trip, traveling can be an amazing experience that creates memories to last a lifetime. If you’ve ever wondered how to better document your experiences, travel scrapbooking may be just the hobby for you! Not only is it a fun and creative hobby, but it also allows you to relive those special moments over and over again. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to create a beautiful and meaningful scrapbook of your travels. Before you start scrapbooking, you'll need to gather some materials. This can include anything special you’ve collected on your trip like maps, photos, polaroids, and event ticket stubs from concerts, museums, or movies — anything you want to remember later as being a highlight of your journey. You'll also need a scrapbook album, glue, scissors, colored pens, and some embellishments like stickers and Washi Tape. If you’re a tech-savvy kind of gal, you could even forgo these materials for a digital version and scan the special items to include! When you're designing your pages, think about the story you want to tell. You can create pages for each day of your trip or for specific events or locations. Use your photos and other materials to create a visual representation of your experiences. Don't be afraid to mix and match different textures and patterns for a unique and personalized look — you do you, anything goes here. In addition to photos and other materials, you'll want to include some journaling in your scrapbook. This can be as simple as writing down the date and location of each event, or you can get more detailed and write about your thoughts and feelings during the trip. You can also include funny memories, details about stops along the way, captions for your photos and special items, or quotes from your travel companions. You can also include a daily itinerary to help you remember where you went and what you did. To make your scrapbook even more personal consider adding some special touches. You can include things like pressed flowers or leaves from your trip or small souvenirs like postcards or magnets. If you’re going the digital route, you can create or download lots of different sticker packs, frames, and backgrounds to match the vibe of your trip. Scrapbooking your travels is a fun and meaningful way to document your experiences and memories. You don't need to be an expert artist to create a beautiful scrapbook, just keep it simple! Focus on using your materials to tell a story. You can also find inspiration online through social media or scrapbooking blogs. And don't be afraid to experiment with different techniques and styles — that's part of the fun! 55

Should You Purchase a VACATION HOME? with Special Guest Writer

A

fter spending a week, or even a day, on our beautiful beaches, it’s hard not to consider buying a vacation house or condo as an investment. Purchasing something in paradise and letting others pay for it when you’re not using it is enticing. Buying a vacation home sounds like a dreamy idea, but is it a good investment? First, let me set the stage to ensure we are on the same page. We are discussing purchasing a home or condo you would own in a desirable vacation area. I am not talking about a timeshare or fractional ownership. That is another article for another day. I am also not talking about a short-term rental in a neighborhood down the road from where you live that would never be your vacation destination. Living on the Gulf Coast, we have a huge advantage. We could have a vacation home 30 minutes from our house. You don’t have to leave the area to vacation when you live in paradise.

Since I am a numbers person, let’s talk numbers! Investing in a vacation home for short-term rental located in a beautiful tourist destination such as Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, or Navarre Beach can be a great way to have a vacation home or condo for your family to enjoy a few weeks a year, but do the financials make sense? When comparing long-term rentals, such as annual leased properties, most people look for a cash flow or percentage return on investment based on monthly expenses and monthly revenue since these numbers stay constant. You would not want to look at these numbers monthly on a vacation rental. The most obvious reason we don’t look at these investments monthly is that seasonal rentals rates are a lot higher in the summer than your rental rates in the winter. A week during the Blue Angels airshow could run five times or more than a week in the middle of January.

www.ScarlettMag.com

57-60_TourofHomesPcola_JulyAug23.indd 2

6/29/23 10:20 AM

I would even caution a prospective investor not to analyze a purchase annually. These properties are longterm investments that you want to study return rates over a 5- to 10-year period. I prefer 10 years because then you can consider storms, associations’ assessments, and the required repair, maintenance, and upkeep. The location matters! When buying a higher-valued property in a vacation area, scarcity makes this property more valuable. Suppose you look at Pensacola Beach for an example. Eight percent of the island is protected and can’t be developed. That only leaves 20 percent of the island for tourists and locals to enjoy housing accommodations. There is minimal inventory. The values increase over time since God is not making new waterfront property! You can have years where the values decrease, but they will come back up eventually. This is a massive part of the equation for these properties. The goal would be to buy and sell a property in 10 to 20 years for more than you paid. You would cash in on the equity you have built in the property over the years. Instead of a smaller monthly cash flow, the goal would be a sizable one-time cashout. This does not mean the property would not make money over the years. There could be many years it is very profitable, years it’s just covering the cost, and some years it could lose money. The large payday comes when you sell it. Of course, the added value is having a place for you and your family to enjoy a few times a year, preferably in the off-season. You could use it at the peak season, but it has a cost. You want to pick a place that is a popular tourist destination that you also like to visit and enjoy. Those blessed to live in paradise know the best time on the beach is after the summer madness ends. I know my family’s favorite month of the year to enjoy the beach is September. 59

57-60_TourofHomesPcola_JulyAug23.indd 3

6/29/23 10:20 AM

Determining whether or not to purchase a vacation home or condo comes down to your personal goals and financial situation. If you want to buy an investment that you can own for years while the value grows over time and your family can enjoy it, you may want to consider purchasing a vacation home. Call me to discuss your goals and determine if this is a good option for you!

ummer is here, ladies, and it's time to hit the pool or beach! But with so many different swimsuit styles, patterns, and colors to choose from it can be overwhelming to find the right one for your shape. But don't worry, we've got you covered with some pointers on how to choose the perfect swimsuit for your body type.

Before you start shopping for a swimsuit, it's important to figure out your body type. There are five main types: hourglass, apple, pear, rectangular, and inverted triangle. Once you know your body type, you can choose a swimsuit that will flatter your figure.

Hourglass: If you have an hourglass figure, your bust and

hips are roughly the same size, and your waist is well-defined. This body type looks great in almost any swimsuit style, but a high-waisted bikini or a one-piece with a belt can accentuate your curves.

Apple: If you have an apple-shaped body, you carry most of your weight around your midsection, and you have a larger bust. A one-piece swimsuit with ruching around the waist can help create a more defined waistline, and a tankini with a flowy top can help camouflage any problem areas. Pear: If you have a pear-shaped body, your hips are wider

than your shoulders, and you have a smaller bust. A bikini with a bold top and a darker bottom can help balance out your figure, and a one-piece with a plunging neckline can draw attention to your upper body.

Rectangular: If you have a rectangular body shape, your bust, waist, and hips are all about the same size. A swimsuit with ruching or frills can help create the illusion of curves, and a bikini with a bold pattern or bright color can add some dimension to your figure. Inverted Triangle: If you have an inverted triangle body shape, your shoulders are wider than your hips, and you have a smaller bust and waist. A one-piece swimsuit with a deep V-neck can draw attention to your waist and hips, and a bikini with a bold bottom can help balance out your figure.

Now that you know your body type, it's time to choose the right swimsuit style. Here are some things to consider for the most common styles:

Bikini: Bikinis are a popular choice for many women, but

they can be intimidating if you're not used to showing that much skin. If you're self-conscious about your midsection, choose a high-waisted bikini bottom or a bikini with a flowy top. If you have a larger bust, look for a bikini top with underwire or extra support.

Tankini: Tankinis offer more coverage than a bikini, but

they still show off your midsection. If you're self-conscious about your stomach, look for a tankini with ruching or a flowy top. If you have a larger bust, choose a tankini with a built-in bra or underwire.

One-Piece: One-piece swimsuits can be a great option

for any body type. Look for a one-piece with ruching or frills to create the illusion of curves or choose a one-piece with a plunging neckline to draw attention to your upper body. If you're self-conscious about your midsection, look for a onepiece with a belt or ruching around the waist. The pattern and color of your swimsuit can also make a big difference in how it flatters your figure. Keep these points in mind:

Dark Colors: Dark colors like black, navy, and dark green can make you look slimmer and more streamlined. Bright Colors: Bright colors like red, orange, and neon

pink can draw attention to your figure and make you stand out.

Patterns: Patterns can be tricky, but they can also add dimension to your figure. Look for patterns that flatter your body type like horizontal stripes for rectangular body types or diagonal stripes for pear-shaped body types. At the end of the day, you should choose whatever makes you feel best in your own skin. Follow the rules or break them all and make your own — when you feel good, you look good! If you still aren’t sure where to start, just try it on, honey. Swimsuits can look very different on the hanger than they do on your body. Now go out and find the perfect swimsuit for you and feel confident and beautiful all summer long.

Overcoming Vacation

re you feeling anxious and stressed out at the thought of planning a vacation? Do you find yourself worrying about the smallest details and unable to relax while on holiday? Well babe, you're not alone. Vacation anxiety is a common problem that affects many people, but the good news is that there are ways to overcome this and have a stress-free vacation. If you or someone in your family struggles with anxiety or has difficulty leaving their comfort zone, these suggestions may be just what you need to finally find vacation bliss! First off, enough cannot be said for

planning ahead when it comes to your vacay. Start well in advance depending on how big your trip is. This can vary, but basically, the bigger the experience the more time you need to plan it! Crosscountry trip? Start at least a year early. Day trip to your local waterpark? A week should do the trick! Creating a list of things you need to do before you leave will help you organize your thoughts and stay on track. This may include packing, planning for pet arrangements, booking flights, hotels, finding meal options, and choosing activities. Booking early can also save you money and ensure that you get

the best deals. If you're feeling particularly anxious about taking a long vacation, start with small trips. This could be a weekend getaway or a day trip to a nearby town or city. By taking small trips, you can get used to the idea of being away from home and practice relaxation techniques during a shorter amount of time. Self-care is essential for reducing anxiety and stress during a vacation. While it’s tempting to try to squeeze as much as possible into a trip, consider that you’ll be able to enjoy more if you’re feeling your best. Make time for yourself 65

each day to do something that grounds you, such as reading a book, taking a walk, or practicing yoga. Also, make sure to get enough sleep and eat well to keep your body and mind feeling their best. Prioritize your must-do’s and want-todo’s and get to them as time and stress levels permit. It’s OK if you don’t get to every single activity available on a trip — the point is quality, not quantity! After all that, if your vacation anxiety is still severe, seeking professional support can be a game-changer. This could be in the form of therapy or counseling, individually or as a group. A mental health professional can help you explore the root causes of your anxiety and provide you with coping strategies to help you manage your symptoms. So get out there and start planning a vacation worthy of your free time. Plan ahead, start small, don’t forget the selfcare, and check in with your professional support when needed. Happy travels! www.ScarlettMag.com

T

iffany Orner, checking in yet again for another opportunity to share my thoughts with all of you beautiful Scarlett readers … Scarlettes? (is that a thing? It should be, no worries I’ll text the team)! It’s vacation season here in the Panhandle! (PCS season for us military folk, but I’ll save that for another time *sips tea*). So, what does the word “vacation” mean to America’s military? Two words — military leave. Since relocating to Florida in October, what I’ve learned is that for the locals this time of year means traffic that’s accompanied by horrible driving, and it’s understood that we’re to stay as far away from the popular tourist traps as possible. Noted. I’m here to share what vacation means to the military. To go on vacation, most of you know that we have to take military leave, but do you know what that entails? No worries, igy6. Military leave is any paid leave taken for personal reasons, including vacations, family care, errands, or any other purpose. Regular leave is used on workdays and also any with Special Guest Writer time the service member is leaving the vicinity of their duty station, as defined by their command, on a weekend or holiday. The approval process varies from branch to branch, command to command. No leave Tiffany Orner is a two-time military request is guaranteed, and I’ve seen friends get their leave approved, then a couple of spouse, a mother to three wonderful days before their leave is to start, their leave gets canceled. Welcome to the military, son. children, and a PROUD Air Force This is not “industry standard,” and know that today’s military leadership is trying veteran. She is third generation military, like hell to accommodate its airmen, soldiers, sailors, marines, coasties & guardians. second generation Air Force veteran. Retention & resiliency has taken center stage in all six branches, and for that I am so She is also, in her own words, “one hell damn thankful. of a work in progress.” So, can active duty military take leave and go anywhere? Um, kinda. First let’s talk about leave and how much we get. Did you know that active duty military receive 30 PSA: I am not a collegiate scholar on all days of leave, year one! We earn 2.5 days of leave each month of service (beat THAT things military, but I do thoroughly know *insert almost any corporate job*)! my shit. My thoughts are my own, and I am In order to get approved for leave, we have to fill out paperwork sharing allll of the not speaking on behalf of any nonprofit deets. From the type of leave, i.e. ordinary, emergency, adoption, or paternity (YES the business or organization. I’m here to be the military has that for us, FINALLY) and there are a few other options for leave, but we advocate for others that I wish would have must state what type we’re looking to get approved. Then we must also tell Uncle Sam been available to me both during and after exactly where we’ll be staying. They want to know the address and do NOT lie on this – my service to our country. not a good idea, especially with social media everywhere, I do not recommend stretching the truth. If you’re saying you’re going to be there, be there … integrity first PLUS, when this goes wrong, it has a high probability of going so wrong and turning into four letters AWOL … NO ONE wants that type of party. I do NOT recommend. (Google it if you dare!) Once we submit all of this information, we sit and pray to whomever we believe in @ProudAFVet and feverishly check and refresh our emails in hopes of it getting approved. Once it does, #FREEDOM … but only for the amount of days you requested and as long as we hold ourselves in a respectable fashion … Most of the time *wink.* For our Guard and Reserve units, I am not sure how leave works. There are so many potential factors that play a role within Guard and Reserve orders and their units, especially here in the Panhandle. Stay tuned though because ya girl is a (newer) milspouse to a Guardsman so I shall learn and fill y’all in, we’ll ride this wave together! Fun Fact: Active duty has to stay within a certain distance of their military installation. One can’t just up and fly from VPS to NorCal to go wine tasting because they have the weekend off. Though the distance varies by branch, command, and leadership, etc. To ensure one does not get caught up, active duty shouldn’t travel any more than about 250 miles from their duty station without taking leave and letting their chain of command know. Remember, we’re on ACTIVE duty, meaning that at any time, there could be a recall or a bag drag and no one wants to be THAT person. Welp, I hope that helps some of you patriots (aka civilians) understand that us military folk can’t just peace out at a moment’s notice. But hey, we’re all in this together! How crazy is it that this is the 50th year of our volunteer military. Thankful for all of us that have and continue to serve. Know this, fam, I will NOT stop #UntilEVERYVeteranWantsForNothing.

adies, it's time to grab your golf clubs, put on your sassiest outfit, and get ready to hit the green! Golfing along the stunning Gulf Coast isn't just about the game — it's a fabulous blend of sport, style, and endless fun. So, slip into those cute golf shoes, secure your visor, and let's embark on a golfing adventure like no other! Golf, often considered a gentleman's sport, has transcended its traditional boundaries, inviting women to join the party and showcase their skills with flair. And let's face it, ladies, golf is more than just a sport; it's a glamorous opportunity to don your trendiest outfits, flaunt your accessories, and show the world that you can conquer the fairways with confidence and style. But what makes golf so darn fun? Well, let's start with the fact that it's a sport for all ages and skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a newbie swinging a club for the first time, golf has a place for everyone. It's a sport that fosters camaraderie and friendly competition, where lifelong friendships are formed and memories are made. One of the joys of golfing is the sheer beauty of the courses themselves. Along the beautiful Gulf Coast, you'll find a treasure trove of golfing gems that will leave you breathless. Imagine teeing off against a backdrop of glistening turquoise waters or strolling through fairways lined with swaying palm trees. These stunning vistas not only provide the perfect setting for your game but also offer an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. Now, let's talk about the benefits of playing golf. Beyond the obvious physical exercise, golf provides a plethora of advantages for both mind and body. First and foremost, it's a fantastic stress reliever. There's something therapeutic about focusing on your swing, forgetting the worries of the world, and immersing yourself in the tranquil atmosphere of the golf course. So, next time you need to unwind, you might even skip the spa and head straight to the greens … or maybe do both!

Moreover, golf is a mental game that challenges your strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. Every swing requires focus, precision, and a dash of creativity. It's a game that teaches patience and resilience as you learn to bounce back from a missed putt or a wayward shot. The sense of accomplishment you feel when sinking that long-awaited birdie or nailing a perfect drive is truly unparalleled. But let's not forget about the social aspect of golf. Golf courses are bustling hubs of connection and community. Whether you're teeing off with a group of friends or joining a tournament, golf provides the opportunity to meet new people, network, and create lasting bonds. The green is where stories are shared, laughter fills the air, and celebrations ensue, all while sipping on a refreshing beverage, of course! And hey, let's not ignore the fashionforward side of golf. Gone are the days when golf attire was limited to plain polo shirts and khaki pants. Today, it's all about expressing your personal style on the fairways. From chic skorts and vibrant patterned dresses to funky socks and statement hats, golfing fashion has

evolved into a runway of its own. Don't be afraid to mix and match, experiment with colors, and let your personality shine through your outfit choices. So, ladies, it's time to embrace the world of golf with open arms. Prepare to conquer fairways, revel in the beauty of the surroundings, and immerse yourself in a sport that brings joy, connection, and endless fun. And remember, whether you're a seasoned golfer or a novice, golfing along the Gulf Coast offers an opportunity to unleash your inner diva, strut your stuff in fabulous outfits, and experience a sport that combines athleticism, style, and unadulterated fun.

The first full week of August is National Farmers Market Week! written by: Jessica Graña

ey ladies, are you tired of browsing the same old produce at your local grocery store? Perhaps it's time to switch things up and head to your nearest farmers market! Not only will you find fresh and unique produce, but you'll also be supporting local farmers and businesses. Shopping at farmers markets is a must for any foodie. The produce you find at farmers markets is almost always locally grown and harvested, meaning it's fresher than anything you'll find at the grocery store. Plus, you'll often find unique and uncommon produce that you won't find anywhere else. From heirloom tomatoes to purple carrots, farmers markets offer a wide variety of fresh and vibrant fruits and vegetables that will make any meal pop with flavor, and often at a much better price than larger grocery stores. Maybe the best part about shopping at farmers markets — you are supporting your local community! You'll be putting money back into the local economy, which helps small businesses and farmers thrive. You'll also be able to chat with the farmers themselves and learn more about where your food comes from and how it's grown … you might even be able to make requests for future grow seasons. It's a great way to connect with the people who grow your food and gain a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into producing it. Shopping at farmers markets is also an environmentally friendly choice. Because the produce is locally sourced, it doesn't have to travel far to get to your

table. This means less transportation, less pollution, and less reliance on fossil fuels. Plus, many farmers use sustainable and organic farming practices, which are better for the environment and your health. Farmers markets are more than just a place to buy produce. They are often bustling with activity, featuring live music, food trucks, and local artisans selling handmade goods. It's a great

place to spend a lazy weekend morning with friends or family, sipping on coffee and sampling fresh baked goods while browsing the colorful stalls. So next time you're in the mood for some fresh produce, skip the grocery store and head to your nearest farmers market. Your taste buds (and your community) will thank you!

f you're the kind of girl who likes to keep things minimal “down there,” then you've probably tried a Brazilian wax at least once in your life. But let's be real, the process can be a bit daunting, especially if it's your first time. That's why we've put together the ultimate guide to prepare you for your next appointment and provide some great tips for before and aftercare. First things first, make sure you're not on your period. It's best to schedule your appointment at least a week before or after your menstrual cycle. Trust us, it'll make the experience much more comfortable. Next, it's important to exfoliate the area a day or two before your appointment. This will help remove any dead skin cells and make it easier for the wax to adhere to the hair. You can use a gentle scrub or a loofah, but be careful not to overdo it as this can cause irritation. If you have a low pain tolerance, taking a pain reliever like ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment can help minimize discomfort. On the day of, opt for loose-fitting clothes and cotton underwear (or go commando, if you’re brave enough!) to avoid any friction or irritation. Once you're at your appointment your esthetician will likely explain the process to you and ask you to undress from the waist down. Don't be shy, they've seen it all before. It's important to communicate with your esthetician throughout the process. If you're experiencing too much pain, let them know. They may

be able to adjust the temperature of the wax or take breaks in between to make you more comfortable. Now that your appointment is over, it's time to focus on aftercare. The first 24 hours are crucial, so make sure to follow these tips to help avoid any discomfort or irritation. Firstly, avoid tight clothing, sweating, and any activities that may cause friction in the area. This means no working out, hot yoga, or sex for at least 24 hours, so plan accordingly! You should also avoid taking hot showers or baths. Instead, go for a lukewarm shower to avoid irritation, gently pat the area dry, and avoid rubbing or scratching. You can also use products that focus on treating the skin around the bikini area. They can help prevent ingrown hairs, soothe irritation, and brighten the skin. Treatments can range from exfoliating and moisturizing to masks and even tweezing. It’s important to be mindful of the ingredients and applications you use so as not to cause irritation, inflammation, bruising, or even pH imbalances — if you aren’t sure, ask your esthetician for specific recommendations! Getting a Brazilian wax can be intimidating, but with the right preparation and aftercare, it can be a breeze. Remember to communicate with your esthetician throughout the process, take care of the area post-waxing, and don't be afraid to try some aftercare treatments to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

Reborn: The Red Ledger

Murder on the Emerald Coast

By: Meredith Wild

By: Blair Burns

He’s death for hire…

A murder mystery takes place in Destin and Perdido Key, Florida. Three real estate friends live and work through the horror of losing two other friends to murder. There is greed involved, lust, love, and danger. Beautiful Honey Jennings is murdered while the three friends are out of town celebrating the purchase of a beach house in Mexico Beach. The real estate office swarms with detectives. Honey was having an affair with a rich attorney, Vick Napoli from New Orleans. He is a suspect and one of the major investors in Gulf Wind Real Estate properties.

Some people measure life in hours. Days. Weeks. I measure mine in kills. A covert military mission gone wrong robbed me of my memory and any link to my past. This is my existence now. I execute and survive. Nothing more, nothing less. I was ready to write Isabel Foster’s name in my ledger of unfortunate souls until she uttered the one word that could stop the bullet meant for her. My name. She knows my face. She knows me. She’s the key to the memories I’m not sure I want back. Now nothing is simple. I still have a job to do, and my soul isn’t worth saving. I’m not the man she thinks I am. I can’t love her. And sparing her life puts us both in the crosshairs.

The Cool Kitchen Cookbook By: Taste of Home At the height of summer, the last thing you want to do is turn up the heat in your kitchen — but the family still has to eat! Luckily, there’s no rule that says that you must turn on the oven to create meals your family will love. From the experts at Taste of Home, The Cool Kitchen Cookbook helps you take advantage of modern gadgets, freezer-friendly dishes, and more.

When the real estate team goes out of town to sell a condo project in Perdido Key, Charlie Davis is missing on the day of the sale. Two days later they find him under a ledge. Drowned in the condo pool. More uniforms decend on the real estate company. In between the chaos the three friends find time for romance and some fun at their new beach house. Vick Napoli is accused of murdering Honey Jennings and the trial is held in DeFuniak Springs, the north end of the county. Ann sneaks up to view the proceedings. The twists and turns of thriving real estate with two murders prove to be more than the three friends expected.

My Own Magic: A Reappearing Act

Happy Place

By: Anna Kloots

By: Emily Henry

Despite what appeared to be a glamorous existence full of globetrotting adventures, behind the scenes, Anna Kloots felt invisible in her own life. Consumed by a marriage that left no space for her own desires, she chose to reframe the failure of her marriage as an opportunity to begin again. Now, for every woman searching for her voice, Anna shares her story of starting over by trusting the magic that was always within.

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college — they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now — for reasons they’re still not discussing — they don’t.

It was Anna Kloots’s innate sense of adventure and love for the unknown that led her to move abroad, travel to eighty countries around the world, start a business, and marry a magician, all before her midtwenties. From the outside, her jetsetting lifestyle alongside her husband looked perfect. But as she explored deeper, and let each destination challenge, change, and shape her, Anna began to realize that perfection was just another illusion.

They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Though she appeared to have all the freedom in the world, in reality, she was trapped inside a box, slowly disappearing. When her marriage ended, Anna decided to use her unhappy ending as a chance for a new beginning.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?

Following Anna’s extensive travels from the bustling streets of Jaipur to the canals of Venice to the desert of Dubai, My Own Magic is a true, coming-of-age story about a woman rediscovering the magic that was always inside her. Anna’s memoir is proof that travel can transform you, inspire you, and even save you.

Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

ongtime local resident Linda Quinlan wanted to get something off her chest. So, she decided to write a book. Published in April 2023, Murder on the Emerald Coast takes readers back to the real estate heyday that was 2003-2005. Like Linda, protagonist Blair Burns is a Realtor. She works at a prominent Emerald Coast resort, Gulf Winds. Blair believes something shady is going on as the Gulf Winds real estate team launches multiple high-rise condo projects along the coast. Then the murders begin, and Blair and her two closest friends are caught in a whodunit with an office full of suspects, financial sleight-of-hand, and multiple twists and turns. If this sounds autobiographical that’s because it is, Linda admits. At least some of it. The names have been changed to protect the innocent, as well as those Linda believes are guilty. “People always say to write what you know,” Linda says. “I know something fishy was going on. I have been angry about it for years. So four years ago, I decided to write about it. “I added in the murders to give the plot a few more twists,” she says. In addition to being a Real Estate Broker, Linda is a Master Gardener, an artist, and has recently begun reading to elementary school children along with her Standard Poodle, Saban. Prior to her 30-year real estate career, she had been a banker, a car salesman, and a finance manager at a boat dealership. She knew nothing about writing a book, she explains. “I really didn’t know how to write, so I just started,” she recalls. “And then I realized, you’ve got to learn; you’ve got to take classes; just like real estate. You’ve got to know what you are doing. “So I started taking classes from another writer who started here locally, Allesandra Torre. She is my mentor.” Part of the learning curve for Linda was becoming conversant with artificial intelligence (AI) tools available to writers. “I didn’t use AI to write the book,” she explains. “I used it after I finished the book to make corrections like spelling and grammar errors. “No first author is ever confident, and certainly I wasn’t. There’s a lot to writing. So, I ran my book through the AI program called Marlowe, which

was recommended by my mentor. It tells you how your plot and pacing compares to what is ideal for the kind of book you are writing.” Linda was pleased when Marlowe informed her that Murder on the Emerald Coast most closely aligned with the plot of renowned authors James Patterson and Janet Evanovich. “That gave me the confidence to go ahead and publish the book,” she says. Like many writers, Linda is an avid reader. Some 8-10 years ago, Linda says she stopped watching TV. Instead, she now reads two to three books each week. Her love of reading was no doubt what led her to write, she believes. The author is already deep into her next book. She has switched genres writing a romance tentatively titled, Green Eyes. Although not a country music fan, Linda says her inspiration was Keith Urban’s song Blue Eyes. It triggered memories from her past involving a musician. Also set in the Destin area, this next book features a Realtor as a main character. “But no murders,” Linda says. Murder on the Emerald Coast revolves around friends, love, and greed, along with murders that are only solved in the final chapters. It’s a beach book worth turning off the TV to enjoy.

hen No. 1 New York Times’ best-selling author Meredith Wild made Destin, Florida, her home eight years ago, she had one thing in mind — relaxation. After running her own software development company out of Boston for nearly a decade, she found her way into the publishing industry through a sheer love of reading romance, and that’s when life started to move fast for this mother of three. Meredith self-published her debut title Hardwired in 2013 and quickly got to work opening doors in the publishing world that, at the time, were still closed to indie authors. Using her years of experience as a tech entrepreneur, she forged relationships with major retailers and became one of the first indie authors to become fully stocked in brick-andmortar bookstore chains nationwide. Making strides in these traditional distribution channels and ultimately landing that coveted No. 1 spot on the elusive New York Times’ best-seller list garnered her the attention of several Big Five publishers. In 2015, Meredith signed a highly publicized seven-figure deal with Hachette for her Hacker Series novels, after which she was featured on CBS This Morning, The Today Show, The Hollywood Reporter and in Publishers Weekly, The Examiner and The New York Times. Being both self-published and traditionally published, Meredith added yet another title to her publishing resume — co-founder of her own publishing imprint. Over the next several years, Waterhouse Press would go on to launch successful writing careers for many talented authors, and soon established a reputation as a small but powerful publishing house in the romance industry. Fast forward to today, and 22 Meredith Wild novels line her bookshelf. Her foreign rights have been sold in more than 23 languages. She now oversees three publishing imprints, including Éditions Meredith, a French language imprint, and Page & Vine, her newest venture that focuses on helping “BookTok” trending indie authors get their stories on bookshelves through Meredith’s distribution partnership with Simon & Schuster. Meredith admits that she doesn’t put pen to paper for her own novels as much as she used to, but her entrepreneurial drive rarely wanes. “This is an especially fascinating time to be working in the publishing industry, and I love being in the front row seeing how technology continues to force publishers to adapt. Staying agile and open to those changes keeps me motivated.”

When she isn’t brainstorming her next novel or navigating the ever-changing publishing world, Meredith makes a point to soak in the beauty of living on the Choctawhatchee Bay with her partner, their band of teenagers, and many cats. “I love to work — clearly. But being able to have Destin as my home base and work headquarters has enriched my life in so many ways.” Over her years on the Emerald Coast, Meredith has been lucky to tap into a creative community here as well, including participating in open mic nights hosted by Emerald Coast Storytellers, and mentoring up-and-coming writers through her coaching program. You might even find her at the local Barnes & Noble signing books too. Her latest series, Blood of Zeus, coauthored with Angel Payne, tells the story of Maximus Kane, a broody college professor with inexplicable strength, who meets his match in Kara Valari, a Hollywood starlet with more secrets that he can imagine. The problem? She also happens to be his student. The debut title in the series, aptly named Blood of Zeus, is available for purchase at all major retailers. You can learn more about Meredith’s books on her website at www.MeredithWild. com, or she also enjoys hearing from readers and authors on social media.

Understanding Your H

ey ladies, it’s no secret that your period cycle can affect you in lots of ways. But how familiar are you really with what a period cycle is, how it works, and how to manage it? Let’s talk about it, sister. A period cycle is the length of time between the first day of your period and the last day before your next period. On average, a menstrual cycle lasts around 28 days but can range from 21 to 35 days. A period usually lasts around five days but can range from two to seven days. You may want to think about keeping track of your period cycle to know when to expect your period, how long it lasts, and to identify any changes that may occur. You can use a paper or digital calendar depending on your personal privacy preferences. Many factors can affect your period cycle including stress, diet, and exercise — you know, everyday life. Stress can cause your period to be delayed or to stop altogether, so try to be mindful of taking time for self-care and your mental well-being. Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help regulate your period cycle and help everything flow normally … (pun intended). And, of course, age and medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disorders can also affect your cycle. Hormones also play a big role in regulating your period cycle (and that chocolate bar you’re craving). When your menstrual cycle begins, your body starts producing hormones such as estrogen and progesterone that help prepare your uterus for pregnancy. If you don't become pregnant, your hormone levels drop, and you start your period. Changes in these hormone levels can affect your period cycle. For example, if you have too much estrogen you may experience heavy or irregular periods. On the other hand, if you have too little estrogen your periods may become lighter or stop altogether.

Despite all these factors, there are several simple things you can do to help your period cycle progress smoothly. Practicing good hygiene such as changing your pad or tampon every four to six hours can help prevent infections. Finding the menstrual products that work best for you such as pads, tampons, or menstrual cups can also help make your period more manageable. Understanding your period cycle isn’t just important for your reproductive health but also for maintaining your overall health. And as always, remember ladies, if you experience painful periods, heavy bleeding, or have any concerns about your hormone levels or your period cycle talk to your health care provider about options for managing your cycle or symptoms.
