Windyridge Gardening Advice At this time of year we are certainly spending by Aoife less time in the garden, but there are a few jobs still to be done. Now is the time to cut back herbaceous perennials that have died down to allow space for the fresh growth in the spring. This also helps to make the garden look tidier and shows up any spaces for winter bedding. Herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns can also be divided at this time of year. Clearing away the dead leaves can seem like an endless

and pointless job at this time of year but it is an important job. Wet leaves can be a real trip hazard. You can make the best of your efforts by gathering the leaves and storing them in a hessian bag and making yourself some lovely leafmould for the spring. Many people are reporting a reduction in the number of wasps around this autumn and as a result a bumper crop of unspoilt apples and plums. The old adage of ‘one bad apple spoils the bunch’ is very true. Apples keep very well but remove any damaged apple from the pile and, if possible, don’t leave the apples touching each other and you should be enjoying them for much longer. My extra plums have been used to make pots of jam. My little daughter loves making the labels and giving the pots of jam away as gifts. AUTUMN BY BERNADETTE SAMMON Summer is on the way out and Autumn comes in with a shout of sounds and sights and smells. To wade through a woodland ankle-deep in crispy leaves at this time of year, to listen to the laughter of children as they cheer, on finding chestnuts, to hear the crackle of bonfire – is mellow music to the ear. The trees now wear a multi – coloured gown of crimson, orange, yellow and brown. The fields are left in golden stubble from crops collected. Fruits and berries add more colour to the scene. A huge harvest moon alights the night And humbly, we thank God for the gift of sight. The pungent smells of Autumn, all around, seem to rise up from the ground. Scent of rotting wood and fungus fill the air and whisper “Autumn” everywhere. Soon, the Earth, in winter sleep will rest. Trees turn bare, yet, as I stand and stare, tiny buds of hope appear, already in place from a previous year. Oh, what a powerful force This thing called “life”. It makes our hearts to sing and heralds a new Spring.

OCTOBER 2014

PENSIONS - Saving for your retirement Saving for your retirement is crucially important. People are living longer and are leading more active lives in retirement. As a result it is now more important than ever for you to plan to ensure that you will have sufficient income when you come to retire and to ensure that you are not caught out by the Earnings Gap – i.e. the difference between your income immediately prior to retirement compared to your income just after retirement.

where your additional income will come from – especially during the gap years from retirement through to your State Pension Age. Also, you need a PRSI contribution track record (or be able to satisfy a means-test) in order to qualify for a State Pension.

THE EARNINGS GAP IN RETIREMENT There are several key factors that will have a big impact on the possible Earnings Gap when you retire. You should ask yourself the following questions to try and understand how the Earnings Gap could impact on you personally: 1) What is my likely income or final salary immediately prior to retirement? 2) What is my planned retirement age (e.g. age 60) and how much pension benefit will I receive at that age? 3) At what age will I qualify for the State Pension? The current qualifying age for the State pension is age 66. The qualifying age will rise to 67 in 2021 and 68 in 2028*. This means that: • If you were born on or after 1st January 1955 the minimum qualifying State Pension age will be 67*. • If you were born on or after 1st January 1961 the minimum qualifying State Pension age will be 68*. 4) Do I qualify for the full State Pension (Contributory)? 5) Do I have old employer pensions that have not been reviewed? In order to qualify for the State Pension (as per point 3 above) you will also need to satisfy the following criteria: i) Have I paid PRSI contributions before a certain age? ii) Have I paid the required number of PRSI contributions? iii) Have I a certain average number of PRSI contributions paid over the years since I first started to pay?

THE SOONER YOU START SAVING FOR YOUR RETIREMENT THE BETTER It is important for you to take control of your retirement planning and make decisions regarding your pension –the sooner the better. Your pension scheme can be an extremely valuable asset. For example, if you were to buy a pension from an insurance company at retirement of €10,000 per annum, you could need a pension fund of €250,000 or more. So if your employer sponsors a pension scheme then it may be worthwhile to become a member. If you are self-employed (or in non-pensionable employment) then you need to start making contributions to your own pension arrangement. And in any event, the sooner you start saving for your retirement the better. Most ension benefits are also portable and need not be ‘frozen’ when your employment status changes. Most pension plans are generally tax approved by the Revenue Commissioners. The advantages of Revenue approval are as follows: • you will receive tax relief on your own contributions; • you are not taxed on your employer’s contributions, if any (effectively this is tax-free pay), although for RACs and PRSAs you may be liable for the Universal Social Charge on any contributions your employer pays; • your contributions are invested in pension funds and the growth is free from Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax; at retirement you can take a certain portion of your fund as your retirement lump sum, some or all of this will be tax-free up to certain limits.

Silk Beauty Spa by Rachel Emma Morrissey Silk Beauty Spa in Dalkey is a new day spa offering a range of services, in a beautiful calm environment. The exterior of the business is not reflective of the serene and tastefully designed treatment rooms. I am a busy working professional and am time poo. Last weekend I needed to get a manicure and polish and phoned Silk Beauty Spa. The lady who answered the phone was extremely polite and said she could fit me in at 12.30pm, I told her I’d have my 7 year old daughter with me, would there be somewhere for her to sit while I was getting my treatment. She said no problem, we can give her our princess manicure!

The Salon was deceptive from outside and I was dubious whilst climbing the stairs. All my concerns were diminished the moment I reached reception. We were warmly welcomed and offered tea / coffee / water etc. The décor is a combination of warm mink and creams, with subtle tiling & glass surrounds and plenty of ambient candles. Straightaway, we had our consultation and agreed what we were having done. The cleanliness, professionalism and attention to detail from the two therapists who were in attendance was exceptional. Chatting throughout the treatment I learnt a lot about the two enterprising women who have set up this beautiful intimate beauty spa. The main person behind the business is Nguyen Thu Thuy (Twee). Her journey to Dalkey and experience she has gathered along the way is worth sharing. Twee, moved to Ireland 11 years ago. Originally from Vietnam, she lived and studied beauty therapy in Singapore before moving here. Twee is well travelled and has lived all across Europe. The moment she landed in Ireland she knew she had found her second home. She has been working in beauty therapy since she left school and has a wealth of qualifications behind her from her college years in Singapore, which she then followed up with recognizable Itec, Cibtec and Cidesco certifications through Galligan beauty and then an advanced beauty certification in Senior College, Dun Laoghaire. Twee’s area of absolute excellence is facials, manicure and pedicure. She has over 9 years’ experience working with Mink Salon in Donnybrook and Ballsbridge and Pink Salon in Dundrum. Silk Beauty Spa offers a wide range of treatments and recently included a spray tanning service. So, I wish Silk Beauty Spa the best of luck with their new venture and highly recommend a visit.

Restaurant Review – PLATFORM PIZZA, BRAY BY GRACE O’BRIEN

Although we had our table reserved for 6pm on Sunday we had to queue outside and once inside we waited for our table to be ready. The place was hopping. Young, old, families, couples, all walks. Bob Marley was blasting in the background and the restaurant was buzzing. When a place is this busy they must be doing something a bit special. The Irish Times called it the best Pizza in Ireland. Backing on to Bray train station, Platform Pizza opened its doors in June 2013, owned by husband and wife team Conor and Nicola Duggan. Platform is in a 200 year old building on Bray Seafront, which was once a hotel and so has leant itself well to the rustic industrial design; stone walls, concrete floors and high ceilings. The building also houses Ocean Bar and Grill - both establishments are part of a group owned by the Duggan family in Bray, which includes The Martello Hotel, Ocean Bar and Grill, Platform Pizza Bar and most recently the iconic Harbour Bar, all situated along Bray’s Victorian promenade. We were soon seated at a booth by the door; which was a bit of a

OCTOBER 2014

squeeze for 3 adults and two children. But we were happy to be sitting and had a good view of the very cool rustic interior and the busy open kitchen. One of the talking points of the interior is that the toilets are accessed by stepping through the doors of an antique wardrobe – this would make anyone smile; inside, the bathroom’s walls are papered with scraps of plans for Platform,‘to do’ lists, site plans — which I thought was very clever! Although quite noisy, the restaurant feels comfortable and cozy. The staff couldn’t be any more friendly and helpful. It is far more than just a pizza restaurant. The menu is extensive with something for everyone. They have made a

special effort to make families with young children feel welcome; there’s a special kids menu that comes in the form of a colouring/ activity book which is presented with a cup full of crayons — nice touch. The kids menu is just €8 and includes a starter of pizza dough balls, a choice of main, dessert and a drink; the homemade strawberry lemonade was delicious and was served in a glass jar with a straw and a strawberry. We went for the penne with fresh tomato sauce for our two; which I thought was very disappointing. The portion size was enormous and my 3 year old hardly

Website: www.scanshankill.com

made a dent in it; the sauce tasted a little like spaghetti hoops I’m afraid. The particularly yummy ice-cream that followed more than made up for this. For us — we kicked off with three starters, the Calamari and Prawn Fritto, which, although I’d like them to be more crispy, were so tasty some squabbling occurred over the last few. We also had the Caribbean Jerk chicken wings which were equally delicious (you can choose to have your wings on the bone or off which is handy). The food came out quickly, as and when it was ready; so our little table became very full. Mains chosen were pepperoni Pizza and a Spinach and Egg Pizza. These were great. The pizza combinations on the menu are seriously tempting and all are priced between €11 and €14. The bases are crispy and chewy and just the right thickness. The toppings are good quality and generous. The choices are varied and the combinations well thought out. I opted not to have pizza and went with a new addition to the menu, the Sea Bream on a bed of grilled asparagus. This was a fabulous dish, simple but perfectly cooked. It came with a green salad. We also ordered sides of shoe string fries and sweet potato fries which were tasty and plentiful… I would have liked to stay for dessert and coffee; but time was ticking and the children were starting to get fed up (we were also very full). So what was the damage? €86.50 for 3 adults and 2 children – which I would say is pretty amazing value. (this included two large glasses of red wine, a particularly nice Malbec). The service was great and really friendly, the food delicious and the interior a joy – no wonder it was packed. I’ll definitely be back but possibly without the little ones next time! www.platformpizzabar.ie 7 STRAND RD BRAY CO. WICKLOW SCAN 15

CITIZENS INFORMATION NEWS The Citizens Information Board has produced a new website, gettingbacktowork.ie, aimed at jobseekers and people who want to start a business. Gettingbacktowork.ie is based on selected content from citizensinformation.ie. It replaces the websites losingyourjob.ie and selfemployedsupports.ie. Topics covered on gettingbacktowork.ie include: • Payments for jobseekers • Activation schemes: supports for getting back to work • Education and training options • Retaining benefits while you are working • Starting a job • Setting up a business • Money matters - including tax and PRSI PPS NUMBER - The Personal Public Service Number (PPS Number) is a unique reference number that helps people access social welfare benefits, public services and information in Ireland. Before an individual can be allocated a PPS Number, they must show that they need one for a transaction with a specified body. For example, if taking up employment, one needs a PPS Number to register with the Revenue Commissioners. State agencies that use PPS Numbers to identify individuals include the Department of Social Protection, the Revenue Commissioners and the Health Service Executive (HSE). A PPS Number is always 7 numbers followed by either one or two letters. The PPS Number was previously known as the Revenue and Social Insurance (RSI) number. If your number is the same as your spouse’s number but your number has a W at the end, you may need a new PPS Number. To get a PPS Number, you will need to fill out an application form and provide proof of your identity. Only the Department of Social Protection can provide you with a PPS Number. You can find a list of the social welfare local offices that can register Personal Public Service Numbers on the Department of Social Protection’s website – www.welfare.ie PUBLIC SERVICES CARD - A new Public Services Card is being introduced which is replacing the Social Services Card

currently used to collect social welfare payments and also the Free Travel Pass. The card was first introduced in 2012 on a trial basis. It is being rolled out to people getting certain social welfare payments and to new applicants for other social welfare payments. If you apply for, or are currently getting a social welfare payment (including Child Benefit) you may receive an invitation to register for your Public Services Card. The Public Services Card is issued, by invitation only, in one of 2 ways: Face-to-face registration OR Postal registration The front of the card will hold a person’s name, photograph and signature, along with the card expiry date. The back of the card will hold the person’s PPS Number and a card number. It will also hold a magnetic stripe to enable social welfare payments such as pensions to be collected at post offices. If the person holding the card is entitled to free travel - the card will also display this information in the top left-hand corner. If FT-P is written on the card the holder is personally entitled to free travel. If FT+S is written on the card the holder can travel with their spouse, partner or cohabitant. If FT+C is written on the card the holder can have a companion (over 16) travel with them free of charge (because they are unable to travel alone for medical reasons). TRASH OR TREASURE – Upcycling is a growing Trend Yes, it’s here again, autumn! Every year it brings out some kind of primal urge in me to organise and get out the black bin sacks; it’s time for the Great Annual Clear-out. With children gone back to school and summer clothes and the like packed away; it’s an ideal time to de-clutter and freshen up your home. With a not so large house I’m trying to live by the motto ‘if I don’t need it and it’s not really beautiful; get rid of it’ – but this isn’t always so easy, with sentimentality getting in the way of achieving the minimalist living we drool over in magazines. That old furniture you’re dying to chuck out, wait a minute and take a closer look; is it really ready for the trash heap or could you give it a second lease of life with a lick of paint; some new handles or even transform it into something completely different (old cot bed into a garden bench!). Furniture upcycling has never been so popular; You don’t have to be an expert painter or DIY enthusiast to reinvent and create something really lovely for your home; it’s a really rewarding experience. The quality and choice of paints and primers now is fantastic, making it possible to spruce up any piece, new or old.

By GRACE O’BRIEN

MY COFFEE TABLE MAKEOVER I’ve had this coffee table for a long time. It has lived out in our shed for the past year. It is real wood, so very easy to transform. I first gave the top a good sanding.

I then applied two coats of dark wood stain (rosewood). A little sanding with light paper after the stain and then I applied the Annie Sloan clear wax and then some dark wax. I love the uneven tones. It looks rustic and has so much more character than before. Now for the base. I went for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Florence. I love this colour, it’s a very happy colour.

Annie Sloan’s decorative paint, Chalk Paint is a great place to start if you’re a beginner, it is specifically for painting furniture, kitchens and floors. It is very easy to work with and allows people to be creative as one doesn’t get involved with the technicalities of preparation “No need to prime or prepare!”and it also allows you to change your mind without hassle as you go. It has extremely low VOCs so it is good for the environment and because it is just chalk and water, there’s no smell and you just use water to clean your brushes, etc. There are 30 colours in the paint range and you can mix them to make your own shades. 18 SCAN

I thought it looked great at this point. But that fresh, clean paint did not look quite right against the varied coloured, aged looking wood top. So I applied some dark wax on top of the paint; using clear wax on a rag to wipe it off until I was happy with the finish. With a little time, effort and inspiration, I now have a lovely new table, that wouldn’t look out of place in an interiors magazine (I think!). If you don’t have anything at home; you can always find great pieces at car boot sales or buy and sell sites, such as DoneDeal at great prices. Annie Sloane paint and materials can be found in UpSide Design in Dalkey and Stillorgan.

Shankill Active Retirement Association

At our September meeting Pat welcomed everyone back after the break, with a special welcome to some prospective new members. It may still feel like summer outside but plans were started for an autumn break of a few days away from Dublin and also outings for Christmas. Some members like to have a festive lunch while others prefer to celebrate in the evening – it is hard to please everyone! It has been decided to try the Ocean Restaurant in Bray for lunch on the last Friday of the month, giving Café One a rest for a while. Pat remarked that over the summer she had been talking to a number of single older, and not so old, people who were lonely at home and she suggested that anyone who wishes would meet at the Resource Centre on Mondays and Fridays about 11am for a cup of coffee and a chat. Madelon and Joan reminded us that the Scrabble competition is starting this Wednesday. After the break for tea Margaret Cullen’s daughter, Colette, showed us some of her pictures and told us that she had only recently started painting again after a long gap and how fulfilling she found it. We were all very impressed with her work and wished her well for the future. Mary Mitchel O’Connor TD also paid us a visit and explained some of the work she is involved in outside of

the Dail. She said that she enjoyed being in politics but still misses her first love – teaching. Some of the members voiced their Clare Kavanagh and Margaret Cullen concerns about security in the Shankill area and about the impending water charges. There was such a variety of subjects in the annual photographic competition that it was hard to choose a winner but it was decided that Margaret Cullen’s beautifully atmospheric picture of Lough Corrib should be the winner, with Clare Kavanagh’s photo of a figure staring out to sea in Co. Donegal should be second. Our next meeting, on 20th October, will be the AGM. The committee urgently needs ‘new blood’ so it is hoped to have a good turn-out. We meet on the third Monday of the month at 3.pm in the St. Anne’s Resource Centre. New members are very welcome. For more information contact Pat O’Connor at 2820733.

Spot the Signs - Save a Life Research shows that more suicides are prevented by family and friends than by any organisation or institution. By having the necessary skills to ‘spot the signs’ and make a referral to a support organisation, Pieta house aim to empower the people of Ireland to tackle the issue of suicide. 475 people died by suicide in Ireland last year alone - almost 10 each week.

Super slimmers Donna Fennelly and Donna Walsh are named Women of the Year 2014! Shankill slimmer’s have discovered less is more after losing 9 stone between them and winning the title of Woman of the Year 2014. Donna Fennelly and Donna Walsh lost weight with their local Slimming World group in Shankill and they dropped 9 stone between them in just 7 months. Now their fellow slimmer’s have voted them as their Slimming World Women of the Year 2014. As we have two group times each group voted for the person who inspires, motivates and supports them in their own group each week. Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes for themselves and their families. Donna Walsh joined Slimming World in January after becoming increasingly unhappy with her size. She says: “I started to put on weight unknowingly whilst been bullied I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable. Slimming World is completely different, I never have to miss out or feel deprived and after losing 4st I’m the slimmest – and the happiest – I’ve been in years!” The almost 30 year old Donna Fennelly follows Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on satisfying yet healthy everyday foods like fruit and veg, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice and pulses without having to weigh or measure. the convenience foods and sugary snacks she used to rely on, and loves trying out all the delicious healthy recipes she picks up from other members at her Slimming World group. She says:“My family and friends are all amazed at how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook for them now and they can’t believe it’s all healthy food because it tastes so good. I still eat all the same meals that I did before but now I cook and prepare them differently. I cook from scratch instead of relying on ready meals and convenience foods like jars of sauce. Donna Fennelly says “I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to expect. But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support I’ve received from my Consultant, Cassie, and the rest of the group has been brilliant,” add the two Donnas.“At first I was extremely nervous, especially about stepping on the scales, but straightaway I was made to feel welcome and now it’s like a night out with friends. I couldn’t have done it without them. It’s like having a team of cheerleaders on your side. When you’re doing well they spur you on further and when you’re struggling they keep you going. Donna Walsh says “I never dreamt I could achieve so much. I’ve gone from a size 18 to a 12 and it’s made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life. I’ve got so much more energy and I can do things now that I couldn’t before. My fitness has improved – I enjoy being active now rather than thinking of it as a chore. I feel like a winner already, so being voted the Shankill group’s Woman of the Year 2014 is just the icing on the cake.” Cassie, who runs the Shankill group, says: “I’m so proud of Donna Walsh and Donna Fennelly. Not only do they look fabulous, they have improved their health and are bursting with energy. They are a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope they inspires other men & women in Shankill to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but I think the two Donna’s show just what’s possible when you do.” The Shankill Slimming World group is held every Monday evening at 5:30pm & 7:30pm and Tuesday morning at 9:30am in Shankill Tennis Club, Quinns Road. Making new friends in the park It was a busy summer in St Anne’s. Not only were the summer camps in full swing, we also had a few important upgrades done. All of our windows were given a major overhaul with closing and opening mechanisms replaced to make them safer for little hands. New LED lighting was installed throughout the building, making the place brighter and more eco-friendly. Our front garden bloomed well in its first year and will be even nicer next summer. We plan to add to it in the coming year also. Of course, the most important new addition to the school is our new group of Junior Infants. They had a get together

in Shanganagh Park on Monday the 25th of August. The event was organised by our wonderful PA in cooperation with Shankill GAA, whose ball skills coach, Mike Ahearn, put the children through their paces…. Not sure who was the more tired at the end of the day, Mike or the children!!! 51 of our pupils were presented with Perfect Attendance awards… Our front garden and a gemstone. We are very proud of the enthusiasm of our children and the support they receive from home. On the subject of support from home, one very important development in St Anne’s is the establishment of our new Parent Teacher Association. It will take on the role of our PA but with the added element of staff participation. The Parents’ Association has been a cornerstone of the St Anne’s community for years and sincere and humble thanks go to the dedication, enthusiasm and immense generosity of those parents who have served on it over the years. The new PTA will carry on a very valued and important tradition of cooperation between teachers and parents with a shared vision for the future of our children.

Diary of a Private Investor

PART 8

The purpose of this column is to demystify the world of stocks and shares by recounting one person’s adventures in this world. It does not purport to give advice. Please consult a financial adviser regarding any financial decisions you wish to make. In contrast to last month’s recounting of an investment disaster, this month tells a story of success. In 1998 I bought my first shares in Renishaw, a mid-sized UK engineering company, at just over £4 a share. The dividend in the following year was 11.44p a share, equivalent to an “interest rate” of 2.8% (before tax). A pre-tax return of 2.8% wasn’t particularly attractive compared with what I could have got (net) from the Post Office at the time, but I had faith in the company’s ability to continue growing its business - and consequently its profits and dividends - in future years. My confidence wasn’t misplaced. The dividend grew each year for the first ten years, to more than double its original level by 2008.Then, in 2009, it was cut to 7.76p a share in response to the financial crisis, but was quickly restored when the crisis eased. By 2011, the dividend was 35p a share, higher than before the crisis, and it has increased each year since then. This year’s dividend is 41.2p a share, equivalent to a gross “interest rate” of more than 10% on my original investment. At the time of writing, the share price is £16.80, which means that my 1998 investment at £4 a share has more than quadrupled. Not bad, considering also the steady flow of dividends in the intervening period. For someone buying in at the current price, the gross dividend yield (dividend/ share price) is slightly under 2.5% per annum. Renishaw still has many of the qualities that attracted me to it in the first place. Through good times and bad, it invests around 15% of its revenues in engineering and research and development. This helps to guarantee future success and enables Renishaw to remain a world leader in its core business of designing and making specialist measuring devices for manufacturers. It also has exciting technologies in healthcare and 3-D manufacturing. It has no debt and millions in cash on its balance sheet; it pays out less than 50% of its profits in

dividends, with the balance being reinvested to grow the business. It avoids fancy accounting tricks and the number of shares in issue has remained unchanged for donkeys’ years, which means that shareholders haven’t been asked to cough up extra money, and our entitlements haven’t been diluted by the issuing of shares to senior management. The chairman (who is also chief executive) and his deputy own more than 50% of the company between them, so they have a vested interest in ensuring Renishaw’s continuing success. Furthermore, they and other members of the top management team have been in their jobs for many years, so they know the business inside out. Therein lies a problem: they may have held on to their jobs for too long. The Chairman/Chief Executive is 74, his deputy is 76, the assistant Chief Executive is 65 and the finance director is also 65. I love to see fellow senior citizens doing well, but we can have too much of a good thing, and I fear that Renishaw falls into that category. In situations like this, the senior independent director should be taking the lead in helping to steer the company to the next generation of senior managers and major shareholders. Unfortunately, Renishaw’s senior independent director resigned suddenly on day of the 2013 AGM, so we never did get to hear his plans. I fear that his departure wasn’t completely amicable: the 2014 annual report did not include the customary chairman’s thanks for his service to the company. The conspiracy theorist might conclude that the top managers plan to retire in the near future and sell their shares to a multinational, in order to realise the hidden value in the company’s patents, its engineering capabilities, customer relationships, industry reputation, distribution channels, etc. These valuable assets may not be fully recognised in the current share price.

FOXROCK ELECTRICAL SERVICES

A sale to a multinational might be a bonanza for shareholders, but it might not be in the best interests of other stakeholders, particularly employees. Renishaw has been a key employer in the heart of rural Gloucestershire for many years. A takeover by a multinational could result in the business being moved out of the area. This would have an adverse impact on the local community. No one wants to see that happen, least of all the top management team, I would think, since they too are part of that community. I plan to attend the next AGM, scheduled for mid-October in sleepy Wotton-under-Edge, to see how the next instalment of this saga plays out. In the meantime, I am holding on to my shares.

ST. BRENDAN’S COLLEGE NEWS NEW SCHOOL BUILDING July 16th, 2014 was a momentous day for St. Brendan’s College as this was the day that construction work commenced on our new state of the art school building and sports facilities. Assuming there are no unexpected hitches during the process, we expect to be fully operational in the new school building by the start of the new school year in 2015.Work on the demolition of the existing building and the redevelopment of the pitches will commence in July 2015 and the whole project should be completed by October 31st, 2015.

CO-EDUCATION The Board of Management and other school stakeholders are currently working with the Department of Education and Skills and the Edmund Rice Schools Trust on plans for co-education to coincide with the opening of the new school so as to continue to meet the educational needs of the parents and children of the area. If all goes to plan, we hope to admit girls and boys into first year from September 2016. This will not affect existing pupils as girls will only be admitted into 1st year in 2016. There will be more information about this plan at the Parents Council AGM on October 21st. We are anxious to get the views and suggestions of existing parents on this idea and so we invite you to make submissions either in writing or at the upcoming Parents Council Meeting.Written submissions can be addressed to: The Secretary of the Board of Management, St. Brendan’s College, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

SOD-TURNING The sod was turned on the new school at St. Brendan’s in a ceremony officiated at by Mr Eamon Gilmore T.D. on Friday, August 29th. The new school, which will be a state of the art educational and sports facility for the communities of South Dublin and North Wicklow, is being fully funded by the

Great credit to them all, their teachers and their parents. Most of the 6th year students are now following their chosen college course and we wish them the best of luck for the future. St. Brendan’s had a 3rd level progression rate of 74% in the recent league tables which is our highest ever ranking meaning that nearly three quarters of our Leaving Certificate students go on to 3rd level education. We expect this rate to steadily increase over the next few years.

Do you or a loved one need a helping hand at home? Now it is easier and cheaper to remain in your own home, thanks to Caremark. Caremark is a home care provider service dedicated to delivering the highest standards of professional care to those who wish to remain living in their own homes. Just a few years ago many older people were reliant on family and friends for assistance and support. If this was not an option, the only alternative for the individual was nursing home care. Nowadays, with developments in care provision, it has been recognised that older people would much rather live at home independently with the supports of assisted living. Similarly, people with disabilities can access care and support in the home and community to enable them to live full and independent lives. Caremark provides care and support for anyone who wishes to remain living in their own home, regardless of their situation. Caremark offers the best quality homecare at a price families can afford. Caremark Ireland officially launched its new Children’s Services to coincide with Universal Children’s Day last November. Caremark’s philosophy is that they have a responsibility to proactively safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people. Caremark can support Children and Young People in a number of ways including personal care, appointments, daily living skills, travel training, support at school, college or work, and as a

‘buddy’ for social activities and inclusion. The newest branch to open is located in Deansgrange village, which covers the south Dublin region including Shankill. Caremark is available to visit the client in their homes, discuss their needs and provide an assessment free of charge with no obligation. Caremark will deliver care and personal assistance to a carefully formulated Care Plan from as little as one hour per day to 24 hour live-in packages 365 days a year. It also offers a two-hour rapid response service with no charge for cancelled visits if given 24 hours - notice. Our care is delivered by Garda Vetted and regularly monitored staff who are fully trained to the specific needs of the individual client. A particular thanks to the Junior Open Committee and to all the players - well done to you all. In other junior news, both Coilin and Ellie had a great run in the William Fry Junior Open in Fitzwilliam. Coilin made it

to the finals but was unfortunately beaten in the 3rd set. There was a fantastic turnout of supporters on the day to see Coilin play and despite losing he put up a great performance. Ellie made it to the semi-finals, losing out to the number 1 seed after a 3 set/3 hour battle with a score line of 7-6, 6-7, 6-7 — a fantastic achievement.

COUNCILLORS’ QUESTIONS Councillor Denis O’Callaghan I would like to inform Residents of some local issues I am working on at present. WORKS IN RATHSALLAGH The Parks Dept of the Council have confirmed with me that in conjunction with the Estate Forum and subject to funding being available it is intended to continue this year the planting of spring bulbs on the open spaces in Rathsallagh, Shanganagh Cliffs/Woods and Clifton Park. OPEN SPACE BESIDE DART STATION Work on a new path on the open space near the dart station will commence soon. Other works to be completed at this location include the planting of some trees, improvements to the pedestrian entrance near Athgoe and the installation of park railing along the boundary between the shop and dart car park. WOODEN SEATING IN SHANGANAGH PARK Parks have confirmed that a number of wooden seats will be provided inside the Children’s Playground in Shanganagh Park to facilitate Parents/Grandparents and people with disabilities while supervising the children. A number of additional wooden seats have been installed around the Park for the benefit of its users. SHANGANAGH ROAD Work will continue under the trees along Shanganagh Road adjacent to Scoil Mhuire later this Month. Due to machinery being needed on larger projects work had slowed on this Scheme

POTHOLES NEAR HAZELWOOD ESTATE Following representations, Roads Engineers have confirmed that an inspection of the section of Shanganagh Road between the entrance at Rathsallagh and Hazelwood will be arranged with a view to repairing the potholes. I will continue to pursue until this work is completed. CHANGING FACILITIES FOR SPORTING CLUBS IN SHANGANAGH PARK Following requests for changing and toilet facilities by a Sporting Club using the new pitch in Shanganagh Castle, I and my colleague Cllr Smyth have met with Senior Parks Officials We have asked that this matter be considered and resolved urgently. Hopefully progress can be made in the near future. TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF OLD CONNAUGHT AVENUE Old Connaught Ave is presently closed from Ferndale Road to the M11 over-bridge to facilitate Drainage upgrade works by the contractor. A traffic management plan is in operation and all diversions are signposted. Local access is maintained and work is progressing on schedule. MONITORING OF TRAFFIC MOVEMENTS ON OLD CONNAUGHT AVENUE, CORKE ABBEY This junction is located in Wicklow County Council and therefore is not under the control or maintenance of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Traffic Section. Traffic Section - Traffic Signals and ITS Unit have had a meeting with the Bray Town Engineer and highlighted the issues to him. Traffic Section have agreed to review the control of the junction and offer any optimisation options and assistance and forward a report accordingly to the Town Engineer, Bray (Wicklow County Council). NEW FOOTPATH BETWEEN BROOMFIELD COURT AND SHANGANAGH ROAD On initial examination, it would appear feasible to install a section of new footpath along this section of Shanganagh Road. However, a more detailed topographical survey of road and verge widths and property ownership will need to be done. The collection of data and further assessment will be put on a future work programme of items to be progressed, subject to the availability of in-house resources. INSPECT WATER QUALITY OF POND AT RATHMICHAEL WOOD Water Services will arrange for samples to be taken from the pond to assess water quality. The pond at Rathmichael Woods was dug out by the Parks Department to provide amenity and increase biodiversity at Rathmichael Woods. It is fed by run-off from adjoining lands, including forestry, agricultural lands, a local Ígolf course and public roadways and water quality may be subject to consequent variation. However ongoing inspections have provided no cause for concern. It is intended to continue with development of this feature with ongoing planting of native species to maintain water quality and increase biodiversity. The Parks Department will continue to monitor the position.

SHANKILL F.C. UPDATE Now that the new season has started and the kids have returned to school it’s worth taking a look back at the fantastic summer we had in Shankill FC. One of the highlights for the club was the Bertie Messitt Street League’s sponsored by CHAMPS barbers. Over 250 kids played 180 matches in 2 weeks in the 3rd Annual Bertie Messitt Street League. To begin with we want to express our gratitude to Eddie Walsh from CHAMPS barbers who generously sponsored the event and the Shankill Order of Malta who were on hand to provide first aid for the tournament. As one of the founding members of Shankill Youth Club we are sure it would have put a smile on Bertie Messitt’s face to see so many people from our community both young and old coming together to cheer on the boys and girls in a competition which continues to go from strength to strength each year. The competition was open to boys and girls age 6 to 16 and attracted players from a number of other clubs in the locality to join in. The games were all played in a sporting manner but the competitive edge was there for all to see as the next generation of footballers from Shankill showed off their razor sharp skills to the parents and grandparents eagerly cheering them on from the side-lines. Despite not having played together before all the teams seemed to gel together. The Finals day was a gloriously sunny Sunday with every team playing in a semi-final and 4 teams from each age group contesting the League and Shield trophies for their categories. A number of the semis went to penalties and the goalkeeping skills of Tim Krul from the Netherlands at the World Cup would have been put in the shade as some acrobatic saves were pulled off. The finals took place in the idyllic surroundings of Shanganagh Park with the summer sunshine adding to the festival atmosphere. All teams were presented with medals from Maureen Messitt and by Eddie Walsh from CHAMPS barbers. Many thanks to all who helped out over the tournament. Staying with the hairstyle theme, our girls teams have been sponsored by Vogue Beauty and Hair Design in Shankill. With the season already under way both girls teams are doing well and already have put in fine displays on the pitch. Training for the teams now also includes the highlight of a Saturday morning Academy for younger girls where they are learning how to curl the ball and about

cutting in from the wings to lash a shot on goal (spot the puns). The club continues to attract girls of all ages who are interested in taking part in soccer in a safe and welcoming environment. New members are always welcome for the teams. Shankill FC is a community focussed club run on an entirely voluntary basis and supported by sponsors from our local community. The club currently has 22 teams and approximately 350 members. We wish to thank all our volunteer managers and coaches who give up their time week in and week out to train the kids, organise matches and keep the club running. Thanks to the tremendous work of these volunteers we continue to improve the facilities available to the children of the area while keeping them active and helping them to have a focal point for socialising. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the club. Follow us on Facebook.

OCTOBER 2014

A Great Year for Gardening – by Vivien Reid It has been a great year for gardening in Shankill. There is so much produce growing and ready for eating in the allotments at Shanganagh Castle, it is hard to believe they only came alive in May this year. The annual Grow your Own Vegetable Classes took place again this year and were a huge success. Trevor told me about the course. Fifteen hardy folk braved a cold and wet night on the 27th March to begin a class in Crinken Church hall on the subject of “growing vegetables for fun”. They stayed indoors and chatted through some basic ideas on equipment, vegetables that are easy to grow and what people wanted to grow. They also practised sowing lettuce seeds with the idea that they would not have to buy lettuce for at least five months. The spirit in the classes was excellent with great banter and some very hearty laughs. One example of this came with a question.“How do you keep your neighbours cats off your vegetables”? The answer came back,“dig a nice fresh piece of ground and dig some holes around your vegetables. Place a blown up balloon with some powder inside and cover loosely with dry compost. The cat will come wanting to do its business and will go scratching in the nice dry compost. As it digs its claws into it the balloon

RATHMICHAEL NATIONAL SCHOOL We all returned to school relaxed and healthy. What a lovely summer! I think this was the general feeling. Immediately the children and staff were busy and routines were being put in place. With the Rathmichael Church and School fete came a flurry of community action. School, Church and community gathered everyday preparing for what must have been one of our best fetes. It never ceases to amaze me how many people and children are prepared to pull up their sleeves and get involved. The atmosphere is almost electric. That combined with great weather kept everyone smiling and had a very satisfactory outcome. Well done everyone! And so it begins again. We look forward to another productive year full of activities. We concentrate once again on being active and maybe just maybe we might attain that flag. Keep up the good work everyone. will explode”. If your cat comes home some day with powder all over it you know that your neighbour has been to one of the vegetable growing classes. They all learnt from one another and many useful tips were gathered. Five classes took place at two weekly intervals. The vegetables they grew were lettuce, broccoli, brussel sprouts, peas, runner and french beans, spinach, potatoes and tomatoes. They also looked at growing herbs and where/where not to plant them. For instance don’t plant mint in open ground as it will spread all over your garden in a couple of years The course finished off with a visit to Trevor’s garden including having a look at his vegetable patch. The talking point was his giant cabbage which went on to win the best exhibit in the vegetable section at the Bray and Delgany Horticultural Show recently. Trevor says “I am delighted to see that some of the participants have been allocated allotments in the new plots in Shanganagh Castle grounds and to see those allotments producing some nice vegetables. I would like to congratulate Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council on this provision which is a great asset to the community. I look forward to making many new friends at the allotments and if there is a desire for some simple vegetable classes they can be arranged. However judging by the industrious gardeners there I think I can learn a lot from them”. If you are thinking about getting in to gardening, start planning now. Over the winter you can dig the ground and manure it. Green manure can be planted up to the end of October. This will reduce the growth of weeds and give additional nutrients to the ground when you dig it in early next year. Throughout the winter months you can look at seed catalogues and get up to date information from websites such as www.garden.ie and www.giyinternational.org. If you have a garden, consider how much time you spend cutting the grass over the course of the year. I find it more satisfying to have less grass to cut and to grow vegetables we can eat instead. If an allotment would suit you better, get your name on the waiting list – not everyone is able to take up their plot when it is allocated to them. Call in to the allotments and see what is happening there – and be inspired to take action!
