ST. BRENDAN’S COLLEGE UNDER 19 SOCCER TEAM WICKLOW WEXFORD LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2016 Following an impressive 11 – 1 victory over Enniscorthy in the semi-finals (goals from David Rohlik (3); Luke Clucas (3); Aidan Maguire (2); Mark Tuke, Adam O’Brien and Ray Quinlan), the under 19 soccer team won the 2016 Wicklow/Wexford League Championship after a tough battle against Arklow CBS in a very exciting final. A penalty shoot-out took place and following a tremendous performance from goal keeper Ian Kirwan and goals from David Rohlik, Padraig Murphy, Aidan Maguire and Alex Vortolomei for St. Brendan’s, the title went to St. Brendan’s with a 4-2 penalty score line. Well done to the team who played brilliantly throughout the campaign and to their mentor Mr Meyler. They now progress to the Leinster quarter finals and a first round clash with Lucan Community College. 1916 COMMEMORATION Along with the other schools in the area, St. Brendan’s will be presented with a National Flag and a copy of the Proclamation at a ceremony in Croke Park on March 7th which will be attended by the President Michael D Higgins. On March 16th, the school will have its own flag raising ceremony in the school grounds at 12.30pm. At this time, the student who won the “Write your own

Proclamation” competition will read his winning work. The school will be represented at the Croke Park ceremony by two teachers from the History Department as well as the Head Boy (Callum Brierton) who will be presented with the flag, the chairperson of the Student Council (Ryan Cromwell) and the winner of the Proclamation competition.

CITIZENS INFORMATION NEWS TRAVELLING ABROAD - When planning a trip abroad you can get travel advice and information on local laws and customs on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s website – www.dfa.ie. The website provides detailed country-specific travel advice including information on the local security situation. This helps you to make informed decisions when you are planning a trip overseas and offers you an objective assessment of the risks you could face. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also encourages Irish citizens travelling or living overseas to register their contact details on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s website. The information recorded in the Citizens’ Registration database can be used if there is an unforeseen crisis such as a natural disaster or civil unrest, or if you have a family emergency while you are overseas. This service is only available to people living or travelling outside the Common Travel Area (Ireland/UK). MINIMUM WAGE - Since 1 January 2016, the statutory minimum wage for an experienced adult has increased to €9.15 per hour. You can get more information on the minimum wage and your employment rights from the WRC Information and Customer Service (Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or workplacerelations.ie). BANKRUPTCY - The normal duration of bankruptcy has been reduced to one year from Friday 29 January 2016. Other changes to the bankruptcy rules include the revesting of the family home in a debtor when the property is not being sold. There are transitional provisions for people who are already in bankruptcy. Read more on the ISI’s website - www.isi.ie FIS - The thresholds for Family Income Supplement (FIS) increased on 7 January 2016. FIS gives extra financial support to low paid employees with children who are working at least 38 hours in a fortnight. You must have at least one child who normally lives with you or is financially supported by you. Your child must be under 18 years of age or between 18 and 22 years of age and in full-time education. To qualify for FIS, your average weekly family income must be below a certain amount for your family size. In 2016: You qualify for FIS if your weekly family income is less than: One child €511 Two children €612 Three children €713 Four children €834 Five children €960 Six children €1,076 Seven children €1,212 Eight children €1,308 To find out your weekly FIS payment, you calculate your average weekly family income. Then take away your MARCH 2016

family income from the maximum income limit for your family size (see table above). Your FIS payment is 60% of the difference between your total family income and the income limit which applies to your family. HAP - The Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) is a form of housing support for people who have a long-term housing need. It is administered by local authorities and will eventually replace long-term Rent Supplement. You must be on the local authority’s housing list – which means that you qualify for social housing support – to be eligible for HAP. Under the HAP scheme local authorities pay landlords directly and tenants pay a differential rent to the local authority. This is based on your income and your ability to pay. If you take up a job or increase your working hours, you will still be eligible for HAP provided you meet the other conditions of the scheme. If you are getting a social welfare payment at a post office, you must pay your HAP rent to your local authority through the Household Budget Scheme. People on the housing list who are already renting and getting Rent Supplement can apply for HAP, but you do not have to be getting Rent Supplement in order to qualify. People who are on the housing list and currently getting Rent Supplement will be transferred to HAP on a phased basis. You must find your own private rented accommodation. Although the local authority administers the HAP scheme, you will not be a local authority tenant. The rental agreement will be between yourself and the private landlord. This means that you will have certain rights and obligations, as will your landlord. The rent must be within the HAP rent limits for your household size and the area you live in. The limits are generally based on the limits for Rent Supplement. Additional flexibility has been provided beyond the limits in some local authority areas and for some qualified households where suitable accommodation cannot be found for a household within the HAP rent limits. If your landlord requires a deposit, you will have to pay this yourself – the local authority will not pay it for you. You may be able to get an Exceptional Needs Payment from the Department of Social Protection to help with paying the deposit. 200g icing sugar 2 tbsp orange juice for mixing mini eggs Tip the fruit into a bowl, add the zest and juice and microwave on medium for 2 minutes (or leave to soak for 1 hour). Line 12 deep muffin tins with paper muffin cases. Preheat the oven to fan 180C/ 160C/gas 4. Beat together the butter, sugar, eggs, flour, spices and milk until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes) – use a wooden spoon or hand held mixer. Stir the fruit in well. Half fill the muffin cases with the mixture. Divide the marzipan into 12 equal pieces, roll into balls, then flatten with your thumb to the size of the muffin cases. Put one into each muffin case and spoon the rest of the mixture over it. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until risen, golden and firm to the touch. Leave to cool. Beat together the icing sugar and orange juice to make icing thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Drizzle over the muffins and top with a cluster of eggs. Leave to set. MARTELLO PRODUCTIONS presents

CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS Martello Productions will be performing “Curse of the Starving Class” by Sam Shepard, nightly at 8pm, from 21st to 23rd April, in Rathmicheal National School, Shankill. The Obie Award winning play balances dark comedy and biting satire in its look at a family in their fight to stay alive. The play focuses on the disturbed Tate family - the drunken father, burned-out mother, rebellious teenage daughter, and idealistic son - as they struggle for control of the rundown family farm in Southern California, in a futile search for freedom, security, and ultimately meaning in their lives. The play oscillates between realism and symbolism and features many shocking laugh-out-loud moments and larger than life characters, not to mention a live lamb! As ever, Martello promise a performance not to be missed. For tickets please call 086/2633955 or find us on FaceBook.

This is in addition to the regular Raffle and Bingo. The Wednesday Club (2 to 4 pm every Wednesday) is open to anyone over 60 in the Shankill area. The clients always look forward to the annual outing to Brady’s to celebrate Valentine’s Day and it was as enjoyable as ever. The next Book Sale will be on Saturday 5th March. SHANGANAGH CEMETERY: KEVIN MCCOURT The impact on Irish society made by the national broadcaster, RTÉ, is an underlying theme of several of the articles in this series. No surprise there given that a number of the station’s television and radio personalities are interred in Shanganagh Cemetery. Among the less familiar RTÉ names to be found there is that of Kevin McCourt, a successful businessman brought in to run the station at a time of great change in Irish society.

By Gabriel Conroy

As Director General from 1963-1968 Kevin McCourt was a target for pressure groups he never had to face in the commercial sector. Native speakers made it clear that they were unhappy with what they saw as RTÉ’s lacklustre support of the Irish language. Government ministers were

indignant when their policies and decisions were criticised on the airwaves. And senior churchmen expressed their displeasure at the attacks on faith and morals which they claimed RTÉ was transmitting on a regular basis. During his time at the top of Irish broadcasting, Kevin McCourt was sometimes besieged by those who wanted RTÉ to follow their particular line. One of the most powerful was the archbishop of Dublin, John Charles McQuaid.

Because RTÉ was located in his diocese, the archbishop believed he should have ultimate control over the station’s religious programming. He sought to achieve this through the appointment of one of his priests to a new post of RTÉ religious affairs advisor. McCourt accepted the need for such a position but insisted that the candidate be chosen by RTÉ and not by the Church. When a Dominican priest got the job the Dublin prelate was incensed because members of religious orders were outside his jurisdiction. A stern reprimand to the DG followed swiftly. McCourt’s attempts to mollify the archbishop were not successful and relations between Drumcondra and Montrose remained chilly for a long time afterwards. But relations between RTÉ and the Catholic Church were never easy during those turbulent times. A frequent target for episcopal attacks was The Late Late Show and its host Gay Byrne. (The most notorious example is the affair of ‘the bishop and the nightie’, which would require an article all of its own to do it justice.) McCourt often had to walk a fine line between appeasing the bishops and allowing his top presenter the appropriate editorial freedom. In Byrne’s opinion, at least, he got the balance right. Many years afterwards, Byrne remembered his former boss as ‘the essence of what a Director General should be: dapper, well-dressed, mannerly, with just the right degree of authority’. Following his stint at RTÉ, Kevin McCourt returned to the business world. Despite the difficulties he encountered, he looked back fondly on his time in broadcasting. As he wrote later, ‘Good days they were and I find it much easier to recall the successes and achievements and the happy occasions than I do the strains and pressures by which we must have been afflicted’. Kevin McCourt enjoyed a long and productive life and passed away on 13 May 2000 at the age of eighty-five.

SPRINGTIME: NUTRITION TIPS Spring is finally rearing its pretty head. The wild weather of winter is, in my opinion, no time to start purging or fad dieting. It’s a time to mind yourself, if just to protect yourself from the elements.Much better to wait until lovely spring, when the great outdoors beckons. Here we bust some health myths and nail tips for our box fresh, springy selves. Detox: You don’t need to ‘detox’ if you go to the loo daily. The organs of detox in the body ie, kidneys, liver, skin and lungs, do a perfect job of detoxing our bodies without special detox products. Drink lots of water, up to 2 litres per day. Constipation means your waste system is sluggish. Eat fibrous fruits and veg and exercise. Psyllium husks, available in health stores, are a gentle way to help improve gut function. Cut out wheat, dairy or carbs? No, not unless you have a diagnosed condition, eg gluten avoidance for coeliacs or lactose intolerance (dairy). Faddy diets are hard to sustain and you could miss out vital nutrients. Try to eat properly 80% of the time and kick back 20% of the time. There are Carbs in veg and fruit as well as in grains and sugars. Cut down simple carbs like white bread or pasta, and choose wholegrains. Processed food: Don’t eat processed food as it is invariably full of sugar, salt, hydrogenated fats, wheat and soya. Reading the labels can prove challenging as they may be written in gobbledegook designed to confuse us.

Meat and fish: Buy the best grass reared meat you can afford and you will get omega 3 oils that are so beneficial to good health, but don’t eat it daily. Processed meat like ham or sausages contain nitrates, so only consume these occasionally. Eat oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines up to three times per week. Sugar: Sugar is hidden in many processed foods so don’t consume often. Sweeten home baking with organic brown sugar, molasses (full of B vitamins) or wild honey. Fizzy drinks are nutritionally void, so don’t take! Supplements: Vit D supplement is a good for the Immune system for winter/spring. In sunshine, expose some skin…up to 20000iu Vitamin D is available to the body after 10 minutes outdoors. Fish Oils (or flaxseed for vegetarians) for brain/skin/Cardiovascular health, for those who don’t eat enough fish/seeds. Organic: Organic fruit and veg have better mineral content than non-organic and are necessary if your system is compromised by illness. Peel apples and wash berries well if not organic. Sit down at a table with proper table ware, use smaller plates for portion control and make time for meals. Our relationship with food can be a force for joy in our lives, or it can make us feel miserable and defeated. Help yourself by making positive choices. It was also decided to cut poles and cables linking the Shankill telephone exchange with Bray at a point on the Bray Road between CAL O L the Shankill exchange and Shankill R.I.C. barracks. Ultimately Twamley and his team were told that the Rising was scheduled to take place on Easter Sunday 1916, but only learned of the Rising cancellation at 11.40 a.m. on Easter Sunday. He went immediately to Liberty Hall and was told by Dermot Lynch to await further orders. On Easter Monday Twamley was told to report to Liberty Hall between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. where he learned that the Rising would take place at noon that day and to go immediately to Bray and implement the previously planned sabotage operations. When Twamley reached Bray, a great deal of time was lost trying to locate the Bray men to no avail, but eventually he met Higgins in Little Bray, told him that the Rising was just about to take place, that there was no time to carry out the sabotage operation with the team as planned, and that he was to mobilise his men and travel to the G.P.O. in Dublin at once. TIDY TOWNS NEWS NATIONAL TREE WEEK

IT’S SPRING AT LAST!! With the arrival of Spring, the Tidy Towns team are looking forward to 2016 when, with your help, we hope to improve on our excellent performance in recent years. While we obviously wish to do very well in the competition, our core objective is to make Shankill a better place to live, work and play. Thank you to everyone who supported us by buying our 2016 Calendar – they are a vital source of income for us. We braved the elements at Christmas in the Village and the calendars were well received. We’d especially like to thank the staff in Gremma and St. Anne’s Resource Centre for selling our calendars.

Will be held on March 6th – 13th. As part of our Trees For All project our green fingered gurus and the Parks Dept. will be busy planting 400 trees (Silver Birch, Mountain Ash and Holly). This project aims to have 1 tree for everybody in Shankill to help off-set our carbon emissions. We will also be planting 150 rare fruit trees in a native orchard and creating a new wildflower meadow in Shanganagh Park.

LITTER Our volunteer litter pickers and anti-graffiti workers have been busy. The recent storms have blown over recycling bins and the litter has blown all over the place. We ‘d ask you not to put your green bins out the night before, turn them downwind and place a brick or some weighted object to keep the lids from blowing off.

COASTAL EROSION: We are very concerned about coastal erosion after the storms and high tides our beach has endured over this winter. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council are working on improvement works at the Corbawn Lane Beach Access. We’ve made a submission asking them to consider: Treating walls with anti-graffiti paint, re-instate the metal seat and install an additional seat on the left hand side. Install CCTV camera. Install public lighting along the pathway. Restore and re-paint old water pump. Landscape the area appropriately. Install an interpretive board overlooking the coastline showing types of birds to spot. Install a litter bin at the appropriate location.

SPRING CLEAN DAY Our Annual Spring Clean-up will be held on Saturday April 23rd at 2pm. Please put the date in your diary and please come along and help us give the Village and estates a makeover. We’ll provide all you need on the day so join us and meet new friends and neighbours. MARCH 2016

GRAFFITI The best way to beat Graffiti is to remove it as quickly as possible. If need help removing graffiti from your property or can report graffiti, email us on shankillmatters@gmail.com and put Graffiti as the subject.

HAVE YOUR SAY We are holding a Public Meeting on Thursday April 14th in St. Anne’s Resource Centre. This is your chance to meet and talk to us about Shankill. We’re interested in hearing from you about issues you are concerned about and any ideas, suggestions or projects you’d like us to do in your area would be great.

What is SAGE and what SAGE is an organisation committed to raising awareness of, and taking action on, climate change. It was set up by representatives of Rathmichael, St. James’s Crinken and St. Anne’s parishes, in response to the papal encyclical “Laudato si”. The group welcomes people of all beliefs, and none, and is happy to include people who live outside the Shankill area. SAGE was launched on 22nd October 2015 and nearly 60 people attended.

We must think globally but act locally. We believe that each of us have a responsibility to reduce our negative impact on climate. While the Paris Agreement is a great achievement, each country will voluntarily set its own target for CO2 reductions. However, we can follow cities, towns and villages throughout the world that aim to be carbon neutral, such as Adelaide, which aims to be carbon neutral in less than 5 years. We need to set ourselves ACHIEVABLE targets. Consequently we have decided on a number of short term projects: • Energy audits of the churches, halls, schools and businesses in Shankill, followed by investment to reduce energy use • Invite a group of houses to jointly apply for a grant to improve their energy efficiency • Lobby politicians • Support the Tidy Towns’ Eco Community Initiative in planting trees in Shankill. If you are interested in more information or getting involved in SAGE please contact Justin Kilcullen at justinmkilcullen@gmail.com

A NEW GLOBAL AGREEMENT ON CLIMATE CHANGE World leaders reached an agreement in Paris in December to combat climate change. But was it enough to sustain the planet as a viable home for humanity? There was a lot done, but there is a serious amount more to do. The biggest achievement was the adoption of the target of limiting the increase in the global temperature to 1.5 deg. C. Anything more and the impact of climate change would be extremely damaging, even catastrophic. Leaders agreed a road map to achieve this including a commitment to renewable energy and phasing out of fossil fuels. Developing countries and human rights were also central to this plan. However, no definitive action was agreed. Much of the agreement is either aspirational or voluntary. Much more is required before it comes into effect in 2020. As one of the countries with the highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions in the world all citizens must play their part in enabling us to reach our fair share of the global targets. SAGE is an important initiative to achieve this. Action must start at the local level and move to the national and global to achieve success. 18 SCAN

THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SHANKILL According to Met Éireann: • Temperatures have risen overall in Ireland by 0.8 ˚C in the last century • The growing season is longer • Frosts are less frequent • By 2050 all seasons will be 1.0 ˚C to 1.5 ˚C warmer, there will be fewer cold spells and more heatwaves. • Winters may be wetter and summers drier with an increased risk of drought. • There may be a greater frequency of heavy rainfall events and hence flooding. • Extreme events may increase in frequency. Shankill has a benign climate, tempered by the sea, and climate change impacts may be relatively modest overall, with some negative, and possibly even some positive, effects. For example, garden plants may flower longer and we may need less heating in the winter. However, late frosts may destroy flowers on fruit trees and warmer springs may lead to breeding failures among birds. Heavy rainfall may cause local flooding and storms may bring down more trees and damage infrastructure. The most important impact may be coastal erosion of the boulder clay cliffs. Although Shankill, and Ireland in general, may escape the worst effects of climate change, we cannot ignore the impact it will have on other countries. While we are an island nation, when it comes to climate change no nation is an island!

do we want to achieve? COASTAL EROSION For many of us, especially those who live near the sea, there is constant anxiety about the erosion of the cliffs (see video below). Measurements by students at Newpark School have found that the cliffs are eroding at the rate of 1m per year. The relevance of climate change to this question is twofold: first, the EPA predicts sea level rises of 60 cm by 2100 and that will greatly aggravate erosion, especially if we factor in the more extreme storms predicted. But the other reason we should be worried is the extra rain we are now getting. If Mr. Clarke [RIP], an engineer, was correct in a lecture he gave in the village perhaps thirty years ago, the problem with the cliffs will get seriously worse. After much study and observation he concluded that the cliffs, which consist of clays, sand and boulders, are eroding because rain water is washing them away as it percolates down and drains to the sea. Hence, normal protection systems don’t prevent erosion. As we get more and heavier rain we can expect the cliffs to disappear even faster. If you look at the Corbawn access point or the videos taken over Christmas of the collapse of the cliffs, it is clear that

they are washing out rather than being undermined by the sea. Dun Laoghaire County Council is proposing to install rock armour at the Corbawn Lane access to protect the cliffs but despite this we must be vigilant that there is no development authorised within two or three hundred metres of the cliffs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSCxHgyV6Hw

SHANKILL TIDY TOWNS - TREES FOR ALL ECO COMMUNITY INITIATIVE involved by planting appropriate trees in appropriate places and for special occasions. The objective of this ambitious project is to offset the carbon emissions of the community and to contribute positively to Ireland’s greenhouse gas abatement strategy. (A mature tree can absorb over 9 kg of CO2 in a single year, which equals the amount of CO2 produced by an average car travelling non-stop for 18,300 kilometres!). It is hoped that this project will be a nationwide initiative that Tidy Towns’ groups elsewhere will emulate. Contact Shankill Tidy Towns at info@shankillmatters.com for further details.

COUNCILLORSʼ QUESTIONS Councillor Denis OʼCallaghan OLD REFUSE DUMP NEAR BRAY HARBOUR Recent inspections of the site indicated that erosion from the recent storms had not exposed any material which was considered a risk to human health. Any waste released was inert and non-hazardous. In relation to this historic landfill and in light of the recent acceleration in the rate of erosion the Council is in contact with the EPA and Wicklow County Council to undertake a re-evaluation of the site.

In Pursuit of Happiness Ever wondered how much you influence your own happiness? Research shows that 50% of our overall happiness level is determined by genes, 10% by our life circumstances and 40% by our daily thoughts and actions. People have a happiness set-point which is largely fixed and immune to influence and control. Research demonstrates that Identical twins report similar levels of happiness, even when raised apart, while fraternal twins report greater variations in happiness. Each person’s happiness set-point varies. Surprisingly, only 10% of your happiness is controlled by life circumstances: your country, age, gender, ethnicity, personal history, marital status, occupational status, job security, income, health and religious affiliation. People often expect this to be more…“if only I earned more, lived elsewhere, had the perfect relationship etc. then I would be happier!” In truth people have great ability to adapt to their circumstances so changes bring temporary highs or lows but over time have relatively small effect. 40% is controlled by the daily thoughts, actions and practices in which we choose to engage. Some activities

have greater happiness boosting potential than others. In fact research shows that positive benefits ensue by implementing as little as 4 of the following happiness enhancing strategies into your daily life. 1. Practice gratitude: Acknowledge daily, either by a mental note or in writing, things, people and experiences that you are grateful for. 2. Cultivate optimism: Practice looking on the bright side of things. Look for solutions not problems. Intentionally expect the best of people and situations. 3. Avoid overthinking and social comparison: Distract yourself from dwelling on problems or comparisons with others. You are the best you there is! 4. Practice kindness: Be kind to others. Do a good deed for a friend or a stranger, openly or anonymously. The size doesn’t matter. 5. Nurture relationships: Invest time and energy in relationships that are important to you. 6. Do things that absorb you: Engage regularly in activities or experiences that you “lose” yourself in. 7. Savour life’s joys: Pay close attention to momentary pleasures and wonders. Savour life. 8. Pursue meaningful goals: Devote time and effort to pursuing one or more significant goals that are meaningful to you. 9. Develop coping strategies: Find ways to de-stress physically and mentally, develop social supports and seek professional support when needed. 10. Forgive: Recognise and find ways to work through your anger. Getting it down on paper may be helpful. 11. Religion and spirituality: Get involved in religious or spiritual communities. Read or watch spiritually-themed books or videos. 12. Take care of your body: Look after yourself. Eat well, exercise, have downtime, develop a meditation or mindfulness practice, smile and laugh. Finally, remember variety is the spice of life. The effect of any activity tends to wear off as it becomes routine so keeping it fresh and finding different ways to do the activity is important. BIO-DIVERSITY WORKSHOPS

All the children from 3rd to 6th class visited the Pearse Museum in St. Enda’s Park to learn more about Padraig Pearse, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising and the school that he founded. They were interested to see how different it was from modern schools and were fascinated by the Nature Room.

A number of classes took part in a six week programme on Climate Change. They learned a great deal and enjoyed it very much. Pictured above are students from Ms. McCarthy’s Class displaying a project based on what they learned about Climate Change.

OUR CHILL-OUT CORNER Some of our parents got together and created a restful, chill-out corner for use by children with S.N.A.s or teachers. It is proving a great success. SHANKILL TENNIS CLUB

Eoin O’Brien, project engineer DLRCC with Rita Leonard, member of the STC development committee.

NEW INDOOR CENTRE

MEMBERSHIP

Imagine it’s raining heavily outside and blowing a gale on a winter’s evening… and you’re leaving home to go and play tennis with your regular partners. Sounds enticing? – probably not…

Shankill tennis club is a community based club which prides itself on our friendly and welcoming atmosphere. If you used to play tennis or would like to take it up, why not come down and try it out? As well as competitive league tennis, the club hosts regular social tennis events and purely social events throughout the year for both adults and juniors. Non-members are welcome to play for a fee of €6 per hour and it is advisable to book in advance. For a more sociable introduction, our mixed doubles on a Wednesday night at 8.00 is open to members and non-members alike and there is no need to book. It is the ideal opportunity to develop your tennis and meet other players in a very friendly and informal setting. The emphasis is on social tennis and the format caters for all standards.

However very soon – that’s going to become a thing of the past at Shankill Tennis Club. The new Indoor Centre at the club which will add 3 new courts to the club is almost complete. The development which has been created by the club and our partners Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will be best in class with acrylic surfaces – the same as tournaments like the US Open and the Masters in the O2 each year. This is the latest acrylic design which is called “cushioned acrylic” because its designed to be easy on the body. In addition to the new Indoor Centre the club is also resurfacing 3 of the existing 7 courts. It has also recently strengthened its coaching team. There are now four experienced coaches who can help you begin or improve your game whether you are seven or seventy seven.

Our membership year runs from April-to-April and we are currently open for new members, at very competitive rates. New members joining now will get 14 months membership for the price of 12 and avoid a new member’s levy. So as spring approaches and the evenings are starting to stretch, dust off those runners and rackets and come down and check us out.

A SAD LOSS Shankill Tennis Club lost a loyal and dedicated member at the end of January. Ann O Connor will be greatly missed by all who knew her in the Tennis Club and the Bridge Club. Ann had a large network of friends in the club and she was a great woman to get involved in helping out and got the job done in her own quiet way. We will be running a generation game in her memory in the summer. Ann O’Connor with Rita Leonard

SHANKILL BOWLING CLUB NEWS MENS VETS TEAM

It’s now the time, 1st March when our club fees fall due for payment. The amount of euro €200 is reasonable when you consider the amenities provided, including; Indoor Bowls both casual and competitive on our own mats, in our own clubhouse. Outdoor (Lawn Bowls) everyday on our allweather green. The health benefits are immense, the exercise being good for both mind and body. Our members should consider entering more of the clubs competitions so better prizes can be given and you never know who can get their names on Trophies, some surprises last year, remember? Tea and biscuits galore also.

Photo shows our Vets Team Receiving their ‘Runners-up’ medals from President Christy Short at our AGM. L-R: Jack, Dennis, Liam, Philip, Nick, Albert, Paddy, Tom, Jim. This team were second in their league. Well done. The Tuesday – mixed game is popular with our members though we no longer get non-club bowlers, still on a good day, weatherwise, you can have a couple of rinks there, enjoy the craic and well supervised by Paddy O’Toole.

Our Susan Farrelly, 3rd left in photo, on winning team at Galway Tournament. Well done.

LADIES Watching ‘The Ladies World Matchplay Finals’ on BBC2, it was fair enough to think that some of ours were good and skilled to play at ‘Potters’ and do well. The Final was between Scottish players Ellen Faulkner (Red) and Rebecca Field (Green). Ellen won after a tense game. It was welcoming to see Mary Ryan and Carmel Morton back playing indoor and we hope they will enjoy it.

RATHMICHAEL PARISH SCHOOL WASTE / ENERGY COURSE

On Tuesday 19th January 2nd and 4th Class welcomed the Rediscovery Centre into their classrooms. The Rediscovery centre aims to divert waste from landfill, provide community employment and training and inspire sustainable living. Sarah and Paige presented two very interesting workshops. Fourth Class enjoyed a very interactive and informative ‘Waste Workshop’. We were reminded of the 3R’s- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We also learned of how long various waste can take to decompose. We saw some items made from recycled materials including fleece jackets, reusable shopping bags and lunch boxes. The session also included some fun games and concluded with some art when we made some lovely textile collages out of old fabric. A lively, informative and creative workshop was enjoyed by all! The workshop with Second Class focused on energy types, sources of energy, nonrenewable energy and renewable energy. Through energy games the children also learned about the threat to our energy supplies and the importance of

being energy aware. The children took part in an energy saver / energy user quiz and made solar ovens from recyclable materials. We will melt chocolate in these. The workshop was both fun and educational for the children.

DOGS TRUST Fiona from Dog’s Trust came to the school and gave a very informative talk to all the children. She brought along a three year old boxer who was very well behaved. She taught them how to approach a dog and also of the necessity to ask an owner before petting a dog as you never know what sort of character the dog might be. It was a valuable lesson for all the children.

got there we were surprised at the size of the Auditorium we were in. It could seat 80 people and was tiered which made the room look very large. We arrived at 7 and were able to spend an hour in our groups practising who was going to say what and who was going in what order and to, of course, go over what we had prepared. Each group had to speak for around 15 minutes which was a difficult task as it is very easy to rush through your part to speak meaning your presentation seems very short. I found that, at first, it seems very daunting to go up in front of a room full of people you don’t know and speak about such a complex issue that involves a lot of information. However the longer I spoke the easier I found it and I was surprised at how easy I was finding it and it is very obvious to me that that is because of the course. Before I started I would have struggled at even speaking for 2 minutes in front of my class but after Thursday night I am much more confident in terms of public speaking and communication in general. I feel I got a lot out of the 5 months of the course and for all the hard work we put in I believe there was definitely something to be shown for it and we all took something away from it, whether it was a boost in confidence or the realisation of what we are capable of. All in all it was a very successful night.
