TO SHANKILL F.C My special thanks go to the committee, management and all the unsung heroes of Shankill F.C. for the wonderful job you all did organising the Bertie Messitt’s Champions League during the summer. I was delighted to attend the event which was a marvellous success with over 300 children participating. The time and effort you all put in was certainly worthwhile and there was a great display of footballing talent on view. I wish to express my sincere thanks to all the players, their parents, and the Order of Malta for supporting the event. We as a family are very proud to have been associated with the Bertie Messitt Champions League and wish Shankill F.C. every success for the future. On behalf of the Messitt family and my late husband Bertie, who would have been extremely proud to witness the event, we wish the Shankill F.C. continued success for the future. God bless you all. SUPPORT FOR PRO-BUSINESS - Mary Mitchell O’Connor It is almost impossible to measure the impact small and medium sized businesses have on our economy. I say this in the context of considering what such entrepreneurs have to offer aside from the obvious financial contribution they make to the exchequer. These men and women make extraordinary financial and personal sacrifices in order to breathe life into ideas, some of which succeed, others unfortunately fail. While many measures have been initiated by the government in order to stimulate conditions favourable for establishing new enterprises and job creation. I am not satisfied that enough emphasis has been placed on financial support for those who risk everything for, in a lot of cases, little financial reward and at times failure. Entrepreneurs and Small and Medium Sized Businesses must be afforded the same financial supports presently availed of by those in the PAYE sector who find themselves out of work through no fault of their own. For many pioneers of business this remains one of the biggest obstacles they face when deciding to venture into the uncertain world of business. As someone involved in my own business some years ago I understand the complexities and pitfalls of making a business work. It’s not easy, there never seems to be a balance between effort, work and reward. Those who take risks should not be discriminated against. Under the current tax system, self-employed people pay 3% more in USC on earnings over €100,000 than PAYE employees earning the same money. This, along with PRSI and tax credit rates must be redressed in the upcoming budget. I make no apologies for being pro-business. The self-

employed, the entrepreneur, the family business and the SMES are the life blood of our communities. Supporting them to grow and create long term jobs requires implementing progressive and aggressive policies. I can assure the Minister for Finance is listening. I will continue to lobby him and I am confident he will act. In an article written for this publication last month I made reference to Residential Property Tax and Inheritance Tax. I want to assure you the Minister for Finance is aware that property owners in Shankill and its environs continue to be at a distinct disadvantage where both taxes are concerned when you consider the rapid acceleration in house prices during the past two years. I remain confident, having spoken to Michael Noonan in the intervening weeks, that this issue is being looked at seriously and remains a top priority for the Department of Finance as final preparations are made ahead of Budget 2016. Our local Councillors, I am assured, will row in behind this and it will ultimately result in a 15% decrease in RPT. As speculation continues to mount as to the date of the next General Election it is worth noting that Ireland’s economy remains on course to confound the expectations of many pundits who wrote us off as an economic wasteland. Significant progress has been made on reducing the national debt, jobs growth continues apace. For the first time in many years we can set out a plan for the future of our country, safe in the knowledge that we will never again have to revisit a time when Fianna Fail almost destroyed our hopes and dreams.

SHANE BRINGS GOLD MEDAL BACK TO SHANKILL

Shane, Harry, Ruairi and Daniel

Acorn Garden Services Shane Gevero did Shankill and Dublin proud by winning the boys 100m sprint in the National Finals. The finals were held in Athlone in August. It is a huge achievement as Shane had to compete against athletes from all over Ireland. Congratulations Shane it is great to have a national champion in Shankill. Also competing at the finals were the boys under 12 relay team made up of Harry Simpson, Ruairi Myers, Shane Gevero, Daniel Fanning and Reece Byrne. The boys had trained hard, including a session on the track in Ringsend and it paid off as they had superb baton changes which saw them emerge from the heats to run a very good semi final. Thank you to Edel and David who were fantastic mentors to the boys. Also well done to Sadbh O Loan who did herself proud finishing 6th in her heat amid tough competition. Sadbh will be underage again next year so no doubt the experience this year will be of huge benefit to her. So we’ve had a very successful first year out with minimal resources. Its time to start planning for next year and we appreciate the opportunity of a church gate collection in St Anne’s Church on the weekend of 31st October to help get us up and “running”.

SHANGANAGH ALLOTMENT UPDATE I’m delighted and proud to report to readers of my previous allotment pieces that my French beans were deemed worthy of third place by judges in the Delgany & District Horticultural Society show held in Greystones on Saturday 29th August! I also have another ‘happy ending’ to report: During the Summer (if you could call it that!) I began to notice abundant crops on some allotments threatening to go to seed before they got used. I thought what a waste that would be. So I contacted the organiser of ‘The Dining Room’ in Dun Laoghaire. This is an inter-church initiative that a friend told me about. It began over a year ago now. Anyone in need (of food or company) is invited to come along any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between 12 & 2pm to the Evangelical Church in Dun Laoghaire where they can enjoy a cooked meal. Meals are prepared and served by volunteers and food is donated by local businesses and individuals. Eddie Ryan has kindly circularised all the Shanganagh Castle allotment owners for me & I delivered a bag of potatoes and prize-winning French beans this week! —Catherine McCarthy

CITIZENS INFORMATION NEWS Family Income Supplement (FIS) is a weekly tax-free payment available to employees with children. It gives extra financial support to people on low pay. You cannot qualify for FIS if you are only self-employed - you must be an employee to qualify. You must have at least one child who normally lives with you or is financially supported by you. Your child must be under 18 years of age or between 18 and 22 years of age and in fulltime education. To qualify for FIS, your average weekly family income must be below a certain amount for your family size. The FIS you receive is 60% of the difference between your average weekly family income and the income limit which applies to your family. Your FIS payment is not taxed. If you are getting FIS you may also be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. Your income from FIS is not taken into account in the assessment for a medical card. .The new Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) and FIS can be paid together and the BTWFD will not be taken into account in the income test for FIS. FIS is a tax-free weekly payment for employees who: • Work 38 or more hours per fortnight (any combination of hours that reaches 38 hours each fortnight is acceptable). You can combine your weekly hours with your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant's hours to meet this condition. You cannot use time spent in self-employment (or on Community Employment, Gateway, Tús, JobBridge or the Rural Social Scheme) to meet this condition. • Where the employment is likely to last at least three months • Have one or more children who normally live with you and • Earn less than an amount set according to your family size • You must be employed in the Irish State and pay tax and PRSI here. • Under EU regulations you may be able to claim FIS if your children are living abroad and dependent on you. Generally the payment continues for one year (52 weeks) and is not affected by, for example, an increase or a decrease in earnings. However, in the following two circumstances, your weekly rate of FIS can be revised during the year: • If you start to care for an additional child your FIS rate can be increased. • If you were getting a One-Parent Family Payment and your payment stopped because your youngest child reached the relevant OFP age limit your FIS rate can be revised (by disregarding the rate of OFP assessed in your most recent FIS income test).

weekly income when your claim is being renewed. If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant is self-employed, his or her income over the 12-month period before you lodge your claim is used to work out his or her average weekly income. Again, to qualify, your average weekly family income must be below a certain amount for your family size.

One child Two children Three children Four children Five children Six children Seven children Eight children

It's important to be aware, that if you qualify for FIS, you would get a minimum of â‚Ź20 each week. You can use the Benefit of Work Ready Reckoner from the Department of Social Protection to help you assess the financial consequences of taking up full-time work. The Reckoner works out the total amount you would receive on taking up full-time work (including any Family Income Supplement) and compares this to what you are getting in jobseeker payments (including Rent Supplement). No appointment necessary. Clarence Street is the turning to the right at the traffic lights at the junction of Lower Georges Street, Cumberland Street and York Road, Dun Laoghaire. Citizens Information offers a Free, Confidential and Impartial Service to the citizens of Dun LaoghaireRathdown on a very wide range of issues. or phone Dun Laoghaire CIC at: 0761 07 7400.

Calculating income for FIS The Department of Social Protection (DSP) calculates your assessable earnings over a certain period of time. Because FIS is paid over 52 weeks the DSP tries to calculate your average earnings over a similar period of time. Normally they will use your latest P60 or your gross earnings up to the date of your application. If you are newly in employment, your average weekly income is calculated from when you started work with that employer. Your P60 is also used to calculate your average

7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENAGERS The seven habits course 2015-2016 will begin in October. Places are on a first come first served basis. Places are limited. We invite Transition Year Students who would like to participate in the course to collect a registration form from the parish office The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers is an internationally recognised course that is run every year for transition year students in St Anne’s Parish, Shankill. The course aims to instil in teenagers ‘7 Habits’ which will help them to make more informed decisions and in theory have a more effective and organised lifestyle. Meetings take place regularly throughout the year and are full of new ideas, tips and methods that can be implemented in daily life that aim to make things a little easier to manage for us teenagers.

• Recognise and prioritise your goals • Find balance between school, work, friends and everything else. Quotes from the 2014/2015 Transition Students about the 7 Habits Programme: • It has helped me become a better version of myself and understand the person that I am and the person that I want to be in the future. • Helped me with relationships and how to be more assertive. • Better self-confidence. Became a better me. • It has helped me meet new people and be more assertive. • This programme has helped me organise my day to day life. • I’ve started to think critically and assess different aspects of life. In general, I’ve started to think and be more open minded. • I now approach decisions by looking at what values matter to me in life, and by thinking how they’ll affect my goals. • Take other people into consideration more. Try to be positive. Try to plan more efficiently. • Listen to others more and think about things before I say anything. • I don’t react as much and I’ve become a calmer person. • I have changed the way I look at life, for example I have made relationships with my family and friends much stronger. • It helped me become more in control of my life. • Better self-confidence. Became a better me.

I really enjoyed the course and found the information given to us very practical and useful. With repeated learning and practice the ‘7’ ideas that we were taught really did become ‘Habits’. These Habits are not only useful for me now in my teenage years but will also be used in future years and on into adulthood. The course is definitely a worthwhile experience if you feel you need some life skills to help you get through your last years in school, or even if you want to share experiences and meet new people (and miss school). It’s run by a great group of people who really know what they’re talking about and I definitely got something out of it. —Saoirse Allen, Loreto Dalkey How the 7 Habits can Help Teenagers: • Gain greater control of your lives • Improve relationships with family and friends • Increase self confidence and self-esteem • Make smarter decisions • Define your values and what matters most to you

SHANKILL TIDY TOWNS By the time this article is published, the results of this year’s Tidy Towns competition will be known (due on 28/9/2015). The Shankill Tidy Towns committee is expecting the results to show another improvement on previous years, and we will be watching with interest our position relative to some of our neighbouring communities.

gardening and cleaning will continue over the winter months.

This year there has been a huge investment in time and money to improve the appearance of our village and to enhance the natural amenities as we as residents are so fortunate to enjoy. Shankill Tidy Towns intends to hold an annual general meeting in the spring of 2016 and to write to all residents to seek their participation both practically and financially. It is also with some regret, but with a great sense of gratitude, that we announce that our chairperson for the last seven years, Ms. Susan Fanning, has retired and we send her our good wishes. We are presently looking for some competent resident to fill Susan’s shoes. In the meantime the work of litter picking, graffiti control, It was with great disappointment and reluctance that due to very heavy rains, a decision was made to postpone our Dublin Mountains’ Way Family Guided Walk on Sunday 13th September. A number of hardy souls were mad enough to turn up though and they deserved the reward that awaited them an hour later as the sun broke through, turning a very wet and grey afternoon into a glorious one Along with the Tidy Towns committee, they discovered a castle, learnt about trees and the life of a forest and enjoyed great views back down to Shankill and Bray, along with meeting new friends. The success of the walk means we will definitely reschedule it. We hope to have more details and photographs of this next walk in the next SCAN issue.

THE OLD RATHMICHAEL CHURCH

Our Shrewsbury Street-feast June ’15 The tables came out along with some chairs We hung bunting, with our charity Book Stall The area looked great in the summer sun For our Street-feast with Road & Hall!

I am a Heritage Tour Guide and last year I entered a tour of Tully Church for National Heritage week. It turned out to be a great success. So much so, that I have done the tour a few times during the year. This year I entered a new tour of the Old Church at Rathmichael just off Rathmichael Road. The interest was such that I had to create a cancellation list!

The scene was set and the day was warm When as neighbours we gathered together Spirits were high, and the humour was good Which we agreed was “down to the weather”! “Bring your own lunch” the invite said But our neighbours brought much food to share Tasty wee nibbles and homemade cakes Served up with big smiles and great care! Now long- time residents and new arrivals Shared memories, and stories galore. Some came as strangers and went home as friends Others promised to meet up with next-door! 200 Euro was raised through our Books ‘Cause Denis and Eve are great sellers, So we helped some less fortunate folks in the worldBangladeshi child pavement dwellers Sincere thanks to you, our kind and generous neighbours on Shrewsbury Road and Hall, you entered into the spirt of the afternoon and made happy memories for us all. In the cycle of life there will be natural changes on Shrewsbury, events like this remind us how fortunate we are to live among such wonderful neighbours. *In making our donation to Concern Worldwide (www.concern.net,) we aimed to help children living on the streets in Bangladesh – as suggested by our good neighbour, Rick – it seemed appropriate in the context of a Street-Feast. Thinking of their lives reinforces for us the importance of our community in Shrewsbury and in Shankill, with our natural circles of friendship and support. Let’s value, use and build on what we are so lucky to have. Thanks for lovely summer memories and all good wishes for autumn ’15.

Being a member of Cabinteely Tidy Towns doesn’t just mean picking up litter although it is one of our main jobs. We are a group of likeminded people who pool our talents and ideas in order to enhance our village of which we are very proud. Our interests range from biodiversity, recycling, horticulture, & getting involved in community projects. We are also very passionate about our local heritage & the rich history that surrounds our village.

The tour took place on Saturday 22nd of August & was one of the first tours to kick off National Heritage week. The site at Rathmichael is amazing. It dates back to early Christian times not long after St Patrick was alive. The ruined church stands on a Ráth which has been described as one of the largest in the country. There was a thriving monastery here at one time and a collection of the famous Rathdown Leacts or Slabs were discovered here in the 19th century. The story around the site is fascinating and I hope to do the tour again in the near future. If anyone is interested in coming on one of these tours please email me at: clarkepilkington@gmail.com –Liz Pilkington

Sing Away the SADness! A lot of Irish people suffer from SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is low mood caused by the reduced hours of daylight during the winter months. If you find yourself beginning to dread the shorter, darker days, why not sing away your seasonal blues by joining a choir? Singing is a wonderful way to keep depression at bay. Singing, especially with others, is widely recognised as being an excellent mood booster & very good for your mental health. This is the perfect time to join a choir as the new season begins. Bray Choral Society is currently open for membership for both men and women. You don’t need to know how to read music, just enjoy singing. For further information, call Catherine on 087 66 77 303 or email: cathmccarthy1@gmail.com. (Now you know what an allotment owner does for the Winter!)

LAST DIARY ENTRY FROM A PRIVATE INVESTOR This is a sad occasion for me. “Diary of a Private Investor” will no longer appear in SCAN. In future, it can be read in The Sunday Times. The background is that one of the column’s regular readers showed a couple of articles that appeared in previous issues of SCAN to Niall Brady, who happens to be Money Editor Ireland for the Sunday Times. Niall liked what he saw and kindly invited me to write for the Sunday Times in future. The lure of having my articles read nationwide proved too strong to resist. The first column was published on Sunday, September 6 and the intention is that future columns will appear in the Sunday Times on the first Sunday of every month from now on. Readers may be interested to know that the first column was almost a word for word repeat of a piece that appeared in the September 2014 issue of SCAN. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the

OCTOBER 2015

editorial team in SCAN for their support and encouragement, ever since the first column was published in the January/February 2014 issue of the newsletter. They were prepared to back me even though I had no experience or background in writing, and despite the fact that a column telling about investing in stocks and shares was out of place in a community newsletter like SCAN. Without their support, I would not be in my current happy position of embarking on a new career as a newspaper columnist in my mid-60s. I hope that my experience will prove a source of encouragement to other readers who, like me, are afflicted with the writing bug but who aren’t sure how to go about getting your work published. I’m sure you will get the same advice as was given to me: write what you know about, make it interesting to readers, try not to offend anyone, and the SCAN editorial team will be happy to consider it.

SHANGANAGH CEMETERY: JOAN FITZGerald In his autobiography, All in a Life, Garret Fitzgerald described being Minister for Foreign Affairs as ‘the high point of our joint career’. He was referring to the extraordinarily close relationship he had with his wife Joan during their fifty-two years of marriage. Her influence on him was immense, both personally and politically.

of a difficult childhood. At the age of five Joan O’Farrell, as she was then, had to run for help when her deeply disturbed father tried to drown her mother and baby brother in the sea. When she told Garret this horrific story during their courtship, she feared that her father’s mental illness could pass on to any children they might have together. But eventually she accepted her boyfriend’s repeated proposal and the two were married in October 1947.

By Gabriel Conroy

For many years Joan’s fear of flying persuaded Garret never to travel by plane, even when he worked for Aer Lingus. It was only on his becoming Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1973 that she managed to overcome her phobia. From then on she accompanied her husband on many of his international trips. When Garret was elected Taoiseach in 1981, Joan advised him to appoint Professor Jim Dooge of UCD as Minister for Foreign Affairs. She realised that, as a previous holder of the same office, her husband might be tempted to interfere in the activities of the department if a less capable person were given the job. The new Taoiseach accepted his wife’s counsel despite the fact that her suggested candidate was not an elected TD. He got round the difficulty by nominating Dooge to the Seanad, thereby making him eligible for ministerial office. It would be a mistake, however, to imagine that Garret Fitzgerald allowed himself to be dominated by his partner. In truth, he valued his wife’s judgment and constantly sought her advice, not least because she was bright and independent-minded. But he was also conscious of her need for reassurance, a need born out

Joan Fitzgerald never meekly followed the Fine Gael line, even when her husband led that party. In 1981 she revealed that she had voted for Fianna Fáil during Éamon de Valera’s time as leader. When she appeared on The Late Late Show in 1985 she spoke of how fond she was of her husband’s chief political opponent, Charles Haughey, whom she knew from university. It was not that Joan Fitzgerald was a closet-Fianna Fáiler. She simply hated divisive party politics. Nevertheless she supported her husband loyally throughout his time in high office. But support did not equal flattery.‘It’s not good for politicians to come home to adoring wives’, she once remarked.‘They need criticism’. And Garret cherished what he saw as her vigilance,‘lest I be tempted to compromise my principles in some way’. Despite being virtually crippled with arthritis for the last two decades of her life, Joan Fitzgerald fulfilled her role as ‘political confidante’ to her beloved husband. She passed away on June 12th 1999 and was laid to rest in Shanganagh Cemetery.

MY GARDEN AND THE HOSPICE I was living in a small town house near the centre of Dublin in the early l980s when I was bitten by the gardening bug. My then garden was tiny – much too small to cater to my new found enthusiasm for plants. So, in the midst of another recession, I started to look for a bigger space. I found myself in Shankill looking at a property that subsequently did not match my requirements. I didn’t know the area – Shankill to me was the village you passed through on the way to Bray. I had no connection or knowledge of the place. On my way back through the village I saw a sign for the Library and decided to explore further. That was how I found a charming enclave of cottages, a green and a beautiful library building and a house with a For Sale sign.

contribute to the Hospice funds. Most of all, I am grateful to my neighbours who, apart from their support over the years, tolerate without complaint the takeover of their road for a few hours on the second Saturday of August each year.

There was no garden here when I came in l987. It was just a fairly large space with mounds of soil and no plants. Over the years as I slowly got some shape into the garden and started to grow plants I discovered that I had landed in a sheltered area with a mild, temperate climate. I started to plant out some plants that I was told would only survive inside and discovered, to my joy, that they would indeed live outside in Shankill. So many, although by no means all, of my plants are tender and would not survive in gardens even a few kilometres further inland. In the process of creating this garden I was slowly turning myself into a plant enthusiast, always on the lookout for something new, something different. I had for a long time been aware of the Hospice movement and like many people I had experience of its dedicated care and attention for ill and terminally ill people. So when I decided in 2002 to open my garden for charity, the newly opened Blackrock Hospice was an automatic choice. I have, with the help of some good friends, opened for a few afternoon hours, every year since. We have, over the years raised close to €45,000.00 for this very good cause. I couldn’t have done this on my own and would like to record my gratitude to all those friends who help out on the day and to the many people who come regularly and

Shankill Active Retirement Association To all members, but particularly to our younger ones and those who have joined within the last five years. SARA was founded in 2002 by a group of people who were then in their sixties and early seventies. Sadly some of them have passed away but many of those who remain are now in their late seventies and eighties. Some of them are still very involved with the running of SARA but others have already been on the committee and feel that they have done their bit.

It is now up to the younger members to step up and help if we want SARA to survive. The really worrying thing is that so far no-one has come forward and offered their services as Secretary or Treasurer. Neither are very onerous jobs, particularly Treasurer. Without these vacancies filled at the AGM

SARA will be obliged to close. It is as simple as that. Please think about what you can do, come to the AGM on 19th October and offer your services, preferably on the Committee, but maybe you would be prepared to organise an outing or get an activity going, such as Pitch and Put, Boules, Table Tennis etc. If you want an activity started it is no good waiting for someone else to organise it – offer to do it yourself and once your voice is heard you will get help. We are not “crying wolf”. As the October SCAN goes to print SARA is in real trouble. If you feel you are able to help in any way please contact Madelon Geoghegan at 2390937 or 086 3487516. SARA meets on the third Monday of the month at 3 pm in St. Anne’s Resource Centre. All over 55s are very welcome.

HALLOWEEN RECIPES from Vivien Reid FROZEN BANANA GHOSTS — Makes 8 ghosts. Bananas taste spookily like creamy ice cream when frozen in ghostly robes of white chocolate - quick and easy, with just 4 ingredients. INGREDIENTS 200g bar white chocolate (supermarket own brand Belgian is good), broken into chunks 4 medium-large, ripe bananas 85g desiccated coconut (you won’t use it all) Handful dark chocolate drops METHOD In a small bowl, gently melt the chocolate either in the microwave – in short bursts on high or over a pan of simmering water (make sure the bowl isn’t touching the water). Set aside for a moment while you get the bananas ready. Peel the bananas, cut in half, and push a lolly stick into the middle of each piece. Spread the coconut out in a shallow bowl. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment, and make sure there is room for the tray in the freezer. Using a pastry brush, coat a banana half in chocolate, letting excess drip away. Sprinkle with plenty of the coconut until coated, then set it on the prepared sheet. Now add two chocolate eyes and a mouth, and if you like, cut a few little eyebrows from the chocolate drops too. Freeze the lollies for at least 4 hrs, and up to a week. OCTOBER 2015

SLIME BUG CUPS — Makes 12

Beyond the layer of chocolate biscuit dirt, spooky sweets, spiders, snakes and worms lies a layer of slime-like lime jelly INGREDIENTS 4 x 135g packs lime jelly a selection of animal and bug sweets (see tips, below, for our selection) 2 x 154g packs Oreo biscuits METHOD Make up the jelly following pack instructions. Pour a third of the mixture into 12 small glasses or plastic pots. Add a couple of bugs to each pot, then leave to set in the fridge, keeping remaining jelly at room temperature. Once set, add more bugs to each container (lean some against edges, so they stick out the top). Pour over a third of the jelly and leave to set in the fridge. Repeat with remaining bugs and jelly. For the soil topping, place cookies in a plastic bag and, using a rolling pin, bash into crumbs, then tip onto a plate. Just before serving, sprinkle a layer of soil over each set jelly, then top with a mushroom, a slug and some ants or your choice of creepy crawlies.

A SHORT HISTORY OF SCAN (as of OCTOBER 2015) SCAN was first published in July 1973 (42 years ago) as a typed and folded black and white A5 sheet, and was the voice of the newly formed Shankill Community Association. All the production was done from residents’ homes and was voluntary, as was the delivery to the local community. Over the years SCAN grew in size and in the ‘90s joined with Choices’ newsletter, Loudspeaker. At this stage it was printed and collated in Shanganagh Park House, and later in Choices’ premises on Quinn’s Road. In January 2002 SCAN became an independent entity but remained compiled and delivered by volunteers. The typesetting and printing was now done commercially and February of that year saw the first colour cover. In 2003 we found some much needed permanent office space, sharing an office with the Shankill/Shankil Project. Later we took on board our first person on a FAS Community Employment Scheme. Year on year the content of SCAN has grown and it is now a full colour glossy 32-48 page newsletter with contributions from schools, clubs etc. and all manner of articles. As technology has improved we have endeavoured to keep pace.

From time to time members of the community help with specific projects. This is much appreciated. The main funding for SCAN comes from revenue from advertising, but this does not cover all production costs and other overheads. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council have helped us with grants and we have won several awards. We are especially grateful to the Residents’ Associations and to individual residents who have been very supportive, both verbally and financially. In December 2012 the Shankill Community Area Newsletter became a Company Limited by Guarantee. As of OCTOBER 2015 the number of copies published is 3,850. SCAN continues to be delivered free to homes and businesses in the greater Shankill area by our indispensable voluntary deliverers, of which there are approximately 50. We are always interested in hearing from anyone thinking of joining “The Team”, either helping with deliveries, but particularly in the office.

COUNCILLORS’ QUESTIONS Councillor Denis O’Callaghan WATER CONSERVATION GRANT The Department of Social Protection is administering the Water Conservation Grant on behalf of the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. In the coming weeks all householders who have registered their principal private residence with Irish Water by 30 June 2015 will receive a letter inviting them to apply for the Water Conservation Grant. The closing date for applications is 8 October 2015. This date was set by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government in statutory regulations (S.I. 275 of 2015), signed on Tuesday 30th June 2015. The process is an online one and the Water Conservation Grant application systems will facilitate both online and phone applications from eligible people. People will be asked to provide their PPS numbers when applying for the payment. There is no application form. The first payments are expected to issue to customers’ nominated bank accounts in mid-September. All payments are expected to be made by the end of October. Following a procurement process a preferred bidder has been selected to provide the necessary customer support measures, e.g., providing information on the grant or assisting eligible householders in making online/phone applications for the Grant. Breath Of Fresh Air: Plants In The Bedroom BY GRACE O’BRIEN

Plants in the bedroom is a highly debated topic – is it good or bad feng shui, do the benefits of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and benzene filtering outweigh the potential allergens, etc. ... I fall into the pro-plants camp. There's some disagreement about whether plants in the bedroom is a positive or a negative. Feng Shui practitioners say that plants in the bedroom are not good feng shui, unless your bedroom is fairly large and the plants are located far from the bed. Also, since they represent growth and vibrancy, that goes against the calm and restfulness associated with the bedroom... Although plants improve air quality, they compete with you at night for oxygen. That would mean so does the person who might be sleeping next to you. So I am of the mindset that the effects are not extensive or harmful. Not only will plants serve as a refreshing pop of colour but they will also add to the ambience of your space. Hang your greenery from the ceiling

Display small plants on floating photo shelves

Add a large palm in the corner of the room

Line greenery up in outdoor planters; there are no rules

R ATHMICHAEL PARISH SCHOOL The Rathmichael School and Parish Fete took place on 5th September. The sun shone, the people came, fun was had and all in all a very successful day yet again. It comes around every year. We all look forward to it. It really is a marked event in the calendar for the Shankill Community. Well done to all who took part, their hard work and for creating such a great atmosphere.

The children have returned to school and are working hard. We collected our vegetables grown in the school garden. Potatoes, cabbages and peas were particularly successful this year. The Rhubarb was collected to make chutneys for the fete. The strawberries were delicious. We will continue to work in our garden and try new ideas.

The days and weeks are passing quickly. Each year comes with more and more ideas to include in the timetables which are already jam packed. Overall the staff do a terrific job in finding a balance with them all. Junior Infants to 2nd Class inclusive have

started to play gaelic football during school hours once a week. This initiative by the Shankill GAA club gives half hour coaching sessions to each of the four classes. The children are really enjoying the sessions which are excellent for their hand eye co-ordination and how to play as part of a team.

COUNCILLORS INFORMATION — MARIA BAILEY The next General Election will help shape our country for years to come. It is vital that we elect the right people to Dáil Éireann to safeguard our economic recovery and effectively represent the people of our country. I am, therefore, delighted to have been selected by Fine Gael to contest the next General Election. Working as a County Councillor for the past 11 years, and having successfully contested three local elections, I believe that I have the experience and knowledge to now represent the people of Dún Laoghaire constituency at national level.

I bought my first home during the property bubble and like many people, have experienced the pressures of a large mortgage and management fees, as well as negative equity. We have endured a tough few years, but I’m encouraged that we have begun to recover economically. The next challenge is to secure that recovery, so that every family feels the benefits in their daily lives.

As a working parent, I face challenges every day to balance my work and family life. Childcare needs are constantly evolving and our kids’ needs change as they move on and develop. In the earlier years, I am originally from Killiney, and grew up in a busy CLINIC it’s about providing a safe and nurturing Bakers Corner Pub, household with four sisters. ST. ANNE’S NATIONAL SCHOOL Another busy year starts in St. Anne’s. Our Junior Infants got off to a flying start on 1st September and settled in very quickly. This was due in no small part to the good work done by our PTA in organising a play date in Shanganagh Park the Friday before school began. Thanks also go to Shankill GAA who supported the event with fun and games. We didn’t know that “What time is it Mr. Wolf” was a Gaelic sport – but there you go! On the theme of sports we wish to congratulate Shane Gevero on winning 100 mtr. Sprint at the National Community Games Championships held over the summer. Next stop the Olympics! Congratulations also go to The new Solas yard

Reece Mahon Byrne who has been asked for trials at Manchester City no less. Our enrolment increased dramatically this year due to demand for infant places with an extra Junior Infant class being set up. This led to the staff and parents coming together to plan the development of a third play yard to cater for the extra numbers. Sincere thanks go to Cora Plant and our fundraising group who turned the plans into a reality. Thanks also goes to Stephen Harton who worked closely with the school in the refurbishment of our Computer Room. We will also have a coder club up and running this year and we see this as a very positive development. Look out also for our new school mascot – we have held a competition in the school and we hope to see our mascot popping up by Halloween. Visitors to the school will also have noticed that we have been invaded by Minions but it’s okay because our Caretaker Ogie Ryan has tamed them and put them to work on the school grounds. In the meantime letters get written and sums get taught! St. Anne’s Minion invasion

The clients who come to the centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday are delighted to be back as are the staff and volunteers. We welcome volunteers to help at the Daycare Centre, as part of a rota on one morning every 3 weeks. A volunteer has said “It is enjoyable and not too demanding”. SHANKILL FOOTBALL CLUB www.shankillfc.ie

Another season kicks off and the struggle to become the early leaders at the top of the table is in full swing. The players put aside any thoughts of transfers and moving to another club and focus on the title challenges that lie ahead. We are not talking about the Barclays Premier League here, Oh No, this is football played with real passion and pure pride by the boys and girls of our community. Pre-season training has been completed and the dedication of the players in turning up for this is about to pay off. For those readers who played football at a junior level you will know that the memories you have of that first goal scored, the excellent pass played as an assist, the crunching challenge that stopped the opposition from attacking or the fingertip save that kept a clean sheet remain with you forever. A whole new bunch of memories are being made every weekend right in the heart of our community when the kids from Shankill pull on their green and black kit to play for the pride of our village. It’s a joy to behold to see such enthusiasm and skill on display in Shanganagh Park. It’s also a SHANKILL FC great opportunity for the parents and grandparents to meet up, have a coffee and grab some fresh air while watching a football match. Who knows, you might be watching the next Robbie Keane or Shay Given performing on the pitch without the hassle of having to make a trip to the Aviva Stadium. The club continues to grow each year and we are always grateful to all our managers, committee members and coaches who give up their time on a totally voluntary basis to keep us moving forward. We can always use some extra help and would love to hear from you if you can give a hand as an administrator, event organiser, council liaison, team sponsor or any other role you think could benefit the club. The very best of luck to all our teams as they embark on the new season which we are certain will end with some more silverware heading to Shankill.
