WHEELS FOR LIV Liv is a resident of Shankill, She is a beautiful, engaging, happy four year old with the most infectious laugh you will ever hear. Take the time to get to know her and she will not disappoint, for the Love and Loyalty she gives is true, pure and honest. Liv was born with Congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Microcephaly in July 2011 resulting in Global Developmental Delay and a range of complex needs. Since Liv’s arrival, our lives have changed so much so they will never be the same again. As Liv’s mum and main carer anything I can do to make life run a little smoother for her, I will do or certainly give it my best shot. So the Aim of this Fundraiser is to help fund an Adapted Car, Wheels for Liv! CMV is a common viral infection and is usually harmless, however catching for the first time when pregnant can in some cases, as in Liv’s, have devastating effects and cause serious health problems and substantial disabilities. Liv has significant physical, medical and intellectual needs and requires round the clock care. An Adapted Car for Liv from a health and safety point of view means less lifting so less chance of injury to both parties. The Car is far from Liv’s favourite place but I am positive that allowing Liv to sit in her own Wheelchair which provides maximum support and comfort in an Adapted Car will change Liv’s car journey experience for the better. As the Saying goes A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, a step this Little Girl so deserves. Majella (Liv’s Mum)

“WHEELS FOR LIV WALK IN THE WOODS” We are having a fundraiser on Sunday, February 21st at 2pm meeting at Rathmichael Church for a lovely walk in Carrickgollogan Woods, where you will have a chance to see a beautiful view of the Dublin and Bray area and also the Lead Mines Chimney might be another point of interest. CRINKEN CHURCH SAYS A HUGE ‘THANK YOU’ Christmas is now a distant memory as you read this latest edition of SCAN. However it would be remiss of me not to say a very big thank you to all who were involved or who came to visit the Christmas tree festival in Crinken Church in early December. A year earlier I had a dream of hosting a Christmas tree festival in order to celebrate the churches 175th anniversary but also as a means to reach out to the community to thank them for all their support over the years. Well, with a lot of planning and organising and then approaching almost fifty organisations and businesses the dream started to become a reality. Each organisation was asked would they like to be a part of the festival and the interest was phenomenal. They were given a verse from the bible as we wanted to form a story, “Journey to Bethlehem” and were asked to decorate a Christmas tree with a particular theme and somehow relate this to the work or mission of their own business or organisation. The result of this was so amazing as each and every tree achieved this goal. The weekend of the festival came and despite some mixed weather people came in their droves to look and see what all the talk on Facebook and other advertising media was about. There was something emotional and spiritual about the whole thing. It wasn't that the festival delivered lots of neat answers but there was something about seeing how ordinary businesses had wrestled with the scripture that had been 4 SCAN

assigned to them and sought to interpret it in their decoration. They had all dug deep into their memories to understand Christmas. I had the sense that the experience for both the participants and the visitors stirred something. It was like it awakened a spiritual hunger. As Sunday of the festival approached little did we think that there would be long queues gathering outside the church. Thank you for your patience as you waited and talking to many of you the comment was, “it was worth waiting for”. Over 5000 people visited over the weekend which was beyond all expectations and the people’s generosity was overwhelming with just over €8000 collected for “The Storehouse”. Many prayers were left on the prayer tree and our prayer team prayed through them all. It showed me the real need for prayer in our community and if you would ever like prayer just drop in and we would be happy to pray with you. I am thankful for our community that sought and found a way to engage creatively with a local church as they celebrated their 175th anniversary. So on behalf of Crinken Church can I say a huge thank you to those who decorated a tree so willingly and expertly to make the festival an outstanding success. I would also like to thank all those who visited the festival and experienced something of what Christmas is all about. Wishing you every blessing for 2016. Trevor Stevenson (Rector Crinken Church)

SHANKILL ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION A belated Happy New Year to you all! A group of members visited the National Concert Hall in December to see Phil Coulter and his Friends, preceded by dinner at the Terrace Café. By all accounts it was a most enjoyable evening. At our Christmas party, just before the Big Day, we first of all had a delicious tea provided by Debbie Duncan. Well-fed and lubricated we were then entertained most interestingly by Conor Doyle who has put together an excellent photo and film show about the history of the Theatre Royal in Dublin. Several of our older members remembered well the great shows that were put on there. The original Theatre Royal was built in 1662 and the one built and opened in 1935 was the fourth

incarnation. It was huge, able to hold 4,000. Many famous entertainers and actors performed on its stage including Gracie Fields, George Formby, Jimmy O’Dea, Maurine Potter, Michael MacLiammoir, Judy Garland and Tommy Steel. Sadly, due to falling audiences watching television and films in the cinema, the Theatre Royal closed its doors for the last time in 1962. The hideous Hawkins House, home to the Dept. of Health now stands on the site. You could have heard a pin drop, except for murmurings of “Yes I remember that…”, as Conor related the story of, and anecdotes from, this famous Dublin landmark. If any organisation wishes to engage him he can be contacted on conorjaldoyle@gmail.com Lunch outings continue on the last Friday of the month and Scrabble is held in the Resource Centre every Wednesday at 2.30pm SARA meets every third Monday of the month at 3.00pm in the St. Anne’s Resource Centre. New members will be made very welcome. For further information please contact Madelon Geoghegan at 2390937 or 086 3487516

Windyridge Gardening Advice If your New Year’s resolution is to get by the garden sorted, you have some task ahead of you after our damp and windy winter. This winter has been so wet and many of us still have water logged soil. Walking on soil that is water logged will do a lot of damage. Be patient, especially if you have clay soil, hold off till it dries out a bit before doing any real work or even walking on it.

Aoife Munn

A task you can get to at this time of year is to look at your garden structure and plant to fill any gaps. Evergreens, woody plants and hedging give the structure to your garden. They give year round interest and there is such a wide variety available from topiary to hedging. Many of the garden centres have great value at this time of year including Windyridge so pop in for a look around and see if you can pick up a bargain. In January I like to look through my seed collection and see what is running low. I look at photos of my garden through last year and decide what changes need to be made. I also pull out my bloom pictures from last year and see if there are any new plants I want to get. Spending time planning your garden is enjoyable and it helps you avoid clutter. Planning ensures you get your seeds planted in time for the display you want and helps

you create a more impressive garden.

Early potatoes can be chitted from the end of January for an early crop so for those of you getting the veg garden going again that will probably be your first job. Also have a look through your seed packets so you don’t miss planting dates for any of your favourites. Your spring bulbs should be starting to flower now and brightening your garden. To ensure a good display for next year don’t remove the leaves after flowering for 6 weeks. After bulbs have flowered they make their energy for next year so it is essential to give them the time to do this. You can cut the flower stem back to the base to make them look tidier but leave everything else as it is. For all SCAN readers this month we want to offer a €10 off voucher when you spend €50 to help you get your garden back in shape for the spring. Keep an eye on our facebook page as we run competitions from time to time. www.facebook.com/WindyridgeGardenCentre

Story of St.Valentine "The story of Valentine's Day begins in the third century with an oppressive Roman emperor and a humble Christian Martyr. The emperor was Claudius II. The Christian was Valentinus. Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods, and had made it a crime punishable by death to associate with Christians. But Valentinus was dedicated to the ideals of Christ; not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his beliefs. He was arrested and imprisoned. During the last weeks of Valentinus's life a remarkable thing happened. Seeing that he was a man of learning, the jailer asked whether his daughter, Julia, might be brought to Valentinus for lessons. She had been blind since birth. Julia was a pretty young girl with a quick mind. Valentinus read stories of Rome's history to her. He described the world of nature to her. He taught her arithmetic and told her about God. She saw the world through his eyes, trusted his wisdom, and found comfort in his quiet strength. "Valentinus, does God really hear our prayers?" Julia asked one day. "Yes, my child, he hears each one." "Do you know what I pray for every morning and every night? I pray that I might see. I want so much to see everything you've told me about!" "God does what is best for us if we will only believe in Him," Valentinus said. "Oh, Valentinus, I do believe! I do!" She knelt and grasped his hand. They sat quietly together, each praying. Suddenly there was a brilliant light in the prison cell. Radiant, Julia screamed, "Valentinus, I can see! I can see!" "Praise be to God!" Valentinus exclaimed, and he knelt in prayer. On the eve of his death Valentinus wrote a last note to Julia, urging her to stay close to God. He signed it, "From your Valentine. His sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D., near a gate that was later named Porta Valentini in his memory. He was buried at what is now the Church of Praxedes in Rome. It is said that Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship. On each February 14, Saint Valentine's Day, messages of affection, love, and devotion are exchanged around the world. It may not be widely known outside Ireland that the Carmelite Church in Whitefriar Street in Dublin City claims to hold the remains of St Valentine. The story of how the remains of St Valentine came to rest in Whitefriar Street is interesting, and involves a famous nineteenth-century Carmelite attached to the Church, Fr John Spratt. Fr Spratt visited Rome in 1835, and apparently largely on the strength of his powers as a preacher, Pope Gregory XVI decided to make his Church a gift of St Valentine's body, then believed to be in the Cemetery of St Hippolitus in Rome. The remains of Valentine were duly transferred to Whitefriar Street Church in 1836, and since that date have been venerated there, especially around the time of the Saint's Feast Day. JAN./FEBRUARY 2016

As is the case with some other famous saints, there are rival claimants for the honour of possessing the body of St Valentine, and in view of past scandals concerning the manufacture and sale of relics, authenticating them is notoriously difficult. It may legitimately be asked how a Dublin priest could have persuaded tourism-conscious Romans to part with such a draw as the complete remains of St Valentine, and what we have here is a minor historical mystery. The Whitefriar Street Carmelites have now published online the following translation of a letter in Latin which accompanied the remains of St Valentine when they arrived in Dublin: We, Charles, by the divine mercy, Bishop of Sabina of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Odescalchi Arch Priest of the Sacred Liberian Basilica, Vicar General of our most Holy Father the Pope and Judge in Ordinary of the Roman Curia and of its Districts, etc, etc. To all and everyone who shall inspect these our present letters, we certify and attest, that for the greater glory of the omnipotent God and veneration of his saints, we have freely given to the Very Reverend Father Spratt, Master of Sacred Theology of the Order of Calced Carmelites of the convent of that Order at Dublin, in Ireland, the blessed body of St Valentine, martyr, which we ourselves by the command of the most Holy Father Pope Gregory XVI on the 27th day of December 1835, have taken out of the cemetery of St Hippolytus in the Tiburtine Way, together with a small vessel tinged with his blood and have deposited them in a wooden case covered with painted paper, well closed, tied with a red silk ribbon and sealed with our seals and we have so delivered and consigned to him, and we have granted unto him power in the Lord, to the end that he may retain to himself, give to others, transmit beyond the city (Rome) and in any church, oratory or chapel, to expose and place the said blessed holy body for the public veneration of the faithful without, however, an Office and Mass, conformably to the decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, promulgated on the 11th day of August 1691. In testimony whereof, these letters, testimonial subscribed with our hand, and sealed with our seal, we have directed to be expedited by the undersigned keeper of sacred relics. Rome, from our Palace, the 29th day of the month of January 1836. C.Cardinal Vicar Regd. Tom 3. CITIZENS INFORMATION NEWS INCOME TAX CREDITS AND RELIEFS Tax reliefs reduce the amount of tax that you have to pay. The tax reliefs to which you are entitled depend on your personal circumstances. How tax credits work - Tax is calculated as a percentage of your income. Your tax credits are deducted from this to give the amount of tax that you have to pay. A tax credit has the effect of reducing your tax by the amount of the credit. Everyone is entitled to a personal tax credit. There are personal tax credits for single people, people who are married or in a civil partnership and people who are widowed or are surviving civil partners. If you are in employment, getting a pension or getting a taxable social welfare payment (such as Jobseeker’s Benefit) you are entitled to the PAYE tax credit of €1,650 – single rate. So, for example, if you are single and in employment you are entitled to an annual tax credit of €1,650 and the PAYE tax credit of €1,650. This means that when the total amount of tax you owe is calculated €3,300 will be deducted from this. In effect, this means that if you earn €16,500 or less you do not pay any income tax (because your tax credits of €3,300 are more than or equal to the amount of tax you are due to pay). However you may be liable to pay Universal Social Charge (if your income is over €12,012 and PRSI (depending on how much you earn each week). If you are married or in a civil partnership, you have the option of sharing tax credits and tax bands between you and your spouse or civil partner. If one spouse or civil partner works in the home caring for one or more dependent people you may be able to claim a Home Carer Tax credit. How tax allowances work - In some cases you can get a tax refund for specific expenses, for example, medical expenses or mortgage interest. The value of a tax allowance will depend on whether it is allowed at the highest rate of income tax that you pay or is restricted to the standard 20% rate. Take the example of a claim of €100. If you pay tax at 40% and you can claim it at this rate, then it will reduce your tax by €40 (€100 x 40%). If the highest rate of tax that you pay is 20%, or the relief is restricted to the standard rate, then the claim of €100 will reduce your tax by €20 (€100 x 20%). Employment-related tax reliefs - Contributions to a pension are eligible for tax relief at your highest rate of tax. One-parent families - If you are caring for a dependent child on your own you can claim the Single Person Child

JAN./FEBRUARY 2016

Carer Credit in addition to your personal tax credit. There is also an increase in your standard rate tax band. This means that you can earn more before you start to pay the higher rate of tax. Older people - If you are aged 65 or over, you can be liable to pay income tax in the normal way – dependent on income. However, there are tax exemption limits for people aged 65 or over and there are some extra tax credits. It is possible to get tax relief for covenants to people aged 65 and over. In certain circumstances, you may be able to reclaim any DIRT (Deposit Interest Retention Tax) paid. Housing tax reliefs - If you rent a room in your home to a private tenant you may claim rent a room relief. If you rent your home you may be able to claim Rent Tax Credit if you meet the criteria. If you pay a mortgage, you may claim tax relief on mortgage interest. Education - Tax relief is available on fees paid for approved third-level courses. Medical - If you pay medical expenses that are not covered by the State or by private health insurance, you may claim tax relief on some of those expenses (and for dependent relatives). You can also claim tax relief on nursing home fees. Tax relief is also available for premiums paid for health insurance and for long-term care insurance. The insurance company grants this tax relief at source. Tax following a death - The treatment of tax reliefs following a death depends on the civil status of the deceased person and on the way in which he or she was taxed if married or in a civil partnership. Additional tax credits are available to widowed persons and surviving civil partners. Separation, divorce or dissolution - If a married couple divorce or separate, or civil partners separate or a civil partnership is dissolved, this has important tax implications. What is Life Assurance ? Why is it important to have Life Assurance in place !!! so do you have sufficient savings to fund for such an eventuality. This is where life assurance plays its part and why it is important to ensure you and your family are fully protected, for as little as €15 per month you can buy peace of mind and ensure that financial concerns are the least of your worries. The actual cost of life insurance depends on your age, health, amount of cover, gender and product type. The life insurance industry has never been more competitively priced, when was the last time you reviewed your cover just to ensure you are getting the best price and also to ensure you are adequately covered. At Shankill Financial Services, we have seen people paying way too much for the cover they have, old style polices taken out through the local bank that are simply not suitable or way overpriced. People that have given up smoking is a good example, if they go back to their insurance provider, there can be a saving here of up to 50%. Our advice is to take the time to review your life policies, match it against the age of your children, your debt and your retirement plans. The sooner you do this the better value you will get as these policies are generally fixed in price based on age and health at this moment in time. Should you have any questions in relation to life or illness assurance please do not hesitate to contact Shankill Financial Services on 01-2393220 or email info@shankillfs.ie or contact your financial adviser.

Life assurance is simply a life policy that pays out a lump sum in the event of a death. It is sometimes referred to as life insurance, life cover or mortgage protection. There are two main types of life cover:1. Level term cover – this is a policy that does not reduce during the term and 2. Mortgage protection cover – this is a policy designed to reduce as your mortgage reduces, it should clear the mortgage in the event of death and will not provide any additional cover for the family. If the past number of years has taught us anything, it is that there are no guarantees in life. It has also taught us how important our health and our income is. We insure our cars, our house, our pet but the majority of people fail to insure themselves. We have started asking ourselves many questions: • How would we cope if I was unable to work due to ill health? • Are my family financially secure if anything happens to me? • How long would our savings cover the mortgage, car, school fee’s, groceries, household bills etc? • Will the state provide for my family if I was unable to work? Unfortunately, the state will not meet the shortfall in your family’s standard of living should anything happen to you –

COUNCILLORSʼ QUESTIONS Councillor Carrie Smyth STONEBRIDGE ROAD – PEDESTRIAN SAFETY FOOTPATH WIDTH A number of parents of students in Rathmichael School contacted me prior to Christmas regarding an incident involving a parent along the footpath. I contacted the Traffic Section of the Transportation Department and I received the following response: “I refer to your email dated 20th December 2015 in relation to the traffic issues and pedestrian safety at Stonebridge Road. The Area Engineer visited this location on Tuesday 5th January 2016 and made the following observations:At the narrowest point of road (At Bridge), the road carriageway is 5 metres. approx. 1.25m. As 5 metre is considered to be the minimum width for two way traffic (excluding HGV's), there is no scope to provide bollards or any other physical measures at this location. In recent times, a number of measures have been undertaken on Stonebridge Road in order to improve safety. This includes the provision of ramps placed at shorter than normal intervals, the installation of bollards and railings at various locations, advanced school markings, the setting of a 30kph limit and the prohibition of vehicles more than 3 tonnes. Additionally, there are two wardens assigned to the schools to provide for safe crossing for school pupils and a Flashing Amber Warning Light has been installed. The Area Engineer has contacted the Council's signing and lining Contractor and has instructed them to renew the signing and lining along Stonebridge Road. The referred to Planning Applications/future developments are still under consideration and concerns/observations can still be made to the Planning Section if you wish. However at our next internal meeting, issues that have arisen around schools (e.g. Stonebridge Road) will be brought to Transportation Planning's attention for consideration of restrictions on traffic relating to these developments.”

SHANKILL CLASSICAL MUSIC CLUB MEETINGS IN DECEMBER 2015 AND JANUARY 2016 After a successful try-out of the video equipment last year, Jim Bruce and Tadhg Donovan again presented a wide range of interesting material in the January session. There were several modern concert performances – a Rossini aria sung by soprano Joyce DiDonato, the slow movement from the Chopin cello sonata, with cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Yuja Wang, the opening chorus from J S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, recorded in the reconstructed Frauenkirche in Dresden, and two movements from the Verdi Requiem. From the mid-1970s we saw Arthur Rubinstein – then in his late eighties - playing the Grieg piano concerto, with André Previn conducting. Documentary material included a substantial excerpt from a biography of the composer Delius, and a fascinating window on the process of making a commercial recording, where Leonard Bernstein, with much groaning and rolling of his eyes, coached tenor José Carreras through take after take of Maria from West Side Story. Commercial feature films were represented by musical blasts from Star Wars and 2001 A Space Odyssey, but also in one of the most famous uses of conventional classical music, the Rachmaninov 2nd piano concerto as the tear-inducing soundtrack in the famous 1940s British film Brief Encounter.

In December, John O’Hagan’s programme ran from Zelenka (a rather obscure baroque composer from Bohemia, represented in the programme by the exotically named but attractive instrumental piece Hipocondrie) to the Spanish 19th to early 20th century opera genre Zarzuela (several vocal and instrumental excerpts). In between, there were more familiar genres - cantatas by Handel and Bach, a short Christmasthemed organ piece by the French baroque composer Daquin, a movement from a Mozart piano concerto, and an orchestral tone poem by César Franck. Eccentricity surfaced again in perhaps the most striking items of the evening – two remarkable piano pieces by the rather strange 19th century French pianist and composer Alkan, friend and rival of Chopin and Liszt. For full details of all the pieces and performers, see our website www.shankillclassical.org. Shankill Classical Music Club meets at 7.45pm on the first Wednesday of each month (except July and August) in the Old Folks’ Association Centre, Lower Road, Shankill. New members and visitors are always welcome. The February meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd. Put the date in your diary now! DEAR CONSTITUENT, The next General Election will help shape our country for years to come. It is crucial that we elect the right people to the Dáil so that we can keep this economic recovery going. I understand at first hand how tough the last few years have been on families and I will never forget how the economic crisis has affected people's lives. We must never return to old ways. I am therefore delighted to have been selected by Fine Gael to contest the next General Election. I want to be your voice in national politics, to represent you, and to make sure your concerns are recognized. We need to keep this economic recovery going by electing strong, experienced and balanced individuals. Both my father and I have been County Councillors since 2004, creating history by both of us being first elected together on the same day. With twelve years’ experience on the council behind me, I know I have the ability, determination and knowledge to now represent the people of the Dún Laoghaire constituency in our national parliament. I grew up in Killiney and I went to school in Our Lady of Good Counsel NS, Sion Hill Blackrock and St Joseph's of Cluny Killiney. I then went on to work as Ground Staff with Aer Lingus for a number of years. I am very interested in healthy living and am a daily runner. Now married with two young girls I fully appreciate the challenges of balancing work and family life. I, like many of my age, bought my first home during the property bubble and I am fully aware of the pressure and logistics of rearing a young family, coping with a large mortgage,

paying for childcare and being self-employed. Over the years both my father and I have worked hard to represent our constituents. To us politics is about delivering for people in their daily lives. It is about representing our constituents all year round and not just at election time. The "Bailey" van is always on the road. We pride ourselves on working hard and keeping in MARIA BAILEY touch, which always gives us a CLINIC: Bakers Corner Pub, great sense of the issues on Bakers Corner, the ground. Deansgrange. That is why I am asking you for Saturday 12 noon - 1pm your support with a crucial, www.mariabailey.ie No. 1 Vote so that I can be your voice in Dáil Éireann. I am very excited to take this next step and look forward to the challenge, with your support.

We kept the chickens for two weeks marking their growth, feeding and changing them daily. This is definitely something we will repeat in the future. The education in that surpasses any books in my opinion.

ST. ANNE’S NATIONAL SCHOOL St. Anne’s NS got to host the senior citizens party. We were lucky enough to have the Garda Band performing. Everybody had a great time.

Mind you, the Garda Band were in the halfpenny place when compared with the fabulous recorded concert that took place at assembly just before Christmas. Ann Alyward put the 3rd and 4th class musicians through their paces and they blew us away literally. Last year one of our 5th class did a project on Peter McVerry Trust. One measure of how successful this project was in that the very same children, now 6th class organised a fund raising non-uniform day for the very

same charity. One of our pupils presented Fr. Peter with a cheque for €710 in St. Anne’s church when he celebrated Mass there recently. Ellie McDonnell and Killian Hall got to be TV stars when they took part in the TV quiz ‘Swift TV’. Needless to say they won the competition and beat the rival school and their prize?........They got to cover Mr. Walsh in gunge. The PTA organised a fabulous Christmas party for all children in the school – they even managed to arrange for St. Nicholas himself to pay a visit. Many thanks to everybody who put in such a great effort.

Scoil Mhuire News

1916 CENTENARY COMMEMORATION BEGINS IN SCOIL MHUIRE … Every primary school in the country has been presented by the Army with a copy of the Proclamation and an Irish flag in preparation for the Commemoration of the centenary of 1916. The flags will be raised in all primary schools on March 15th, 2016. Scoil Mhuire held a special Assembly for the presentation and there was a lively question and answer session between the two army personnel and the pupils! Captain Quinn said that he was very impressed with all the preparations before the occasion and mentioned in particular the wonderful art work which was a backdrop to the proceedings. Pictured above is the presentation of the Proclamation.

SHANKILL BOWLING CLUB Preparations are in progress for all the new season’s Ladies and Men’s Lawn Bowls League and Cup competitions. The ladies, led by their caption Phil Furlong will Left to right: Eddie Seery, Indoor Captain; Jim play in Division Kelly, Men’s Captain and Henry Bellew, 1 of The LBLT Vice President. again this year and certainly have the ability to give a very good account of themselves. The men have a team in Division 2 and hopefully in Division 4, also two Vets teams where Shankill could have a winner this year. Once again, Jim Kelly is men’s captain and as he has proved to be a lucky one in the past it should augur well for us. It is heartening to see Bill Kavanagh back again as we can do with bowlers of his calibre always.

achieved since last year, 2015 was a cause for much celebration when the Adult team won the Division 5 championship defeating Naomh Brid in a great encounter. Back in 1985, on a glorious sunny evening the Cuala girls under the management of John Bailey travelled out to Naomh Brid’s grounds in Blanchardstown to take on another Southside club, UCD. A tough match, it was the Dalkey club who were victorious on the night. Much celebrations were held in the old Cliff Castle Hotel. However, the season was not over and the girls were not happy until the double was secured. This time to take the League double it was a trip to the Phoenix Park to take on the Cameron Park club from the northside. This club is no longer. Another tight game in the end it was the Dalkey dames who took the League title. Simply the best feeling that night for the panel of 17 players. Back then the game was played on a 12 a-side basis with a smaller field. Much changes since then!! Many of that 1985 panel went on to play for Dublin and also take on major roles in administration at National Level. That year, both goalkeeper Hillary Thompson and Máire Uí Scolaí( nee Ní Chuirc) were both in Galway, Hillary was studying hotel catering, while Máire was working there. Both girls caught the 3 pm train on many afternoons and duly arrived on time for all games, and make the long journey back the following day. When you are winning, the journey seems less! Jo Holden played both senior and junior for the Dubs. Prior to 1985, both Pamela Howard and Sheila Wallace played for the Dubs, Sheila captaining the senior side in 1976. Sheila,a great defender won a junior All-Ireland medal in 1971 when they defeated Cork. Sheila was a selector when Dublin won the O’Duffy Cup in 1984. Pamela won a junior All-Ireland medal with the Dubs in 1975 when they denied Down victory. Bernie Kehoe (nee Brack also played for the Dubs).Caroline Conway’s sister Bernie who played for Cuala at one stage and also won a senior All-Ireland medal in 1984. The following year, 1986 Sheila Wallace took on the position of Ardrunaí of Cumann Camógaíchta na nGael in Croke Park. Sheila held that position until a number of years when she retired. Prior to her retirement the title changed to Ardstiurthóír. Today the Association is called An Cumann Camógaíochta. So many changes! Sheila, a brilliant administrator made many changes while in the position and was there in centenary year 2004. Another player from that 1985 panel to make it to National Level was Máire Uí Scolaí, who like Sheila served first at Dublin county board level, Máire went to become National PRO in 2000, a voluntary position which she held with distinction until a few years ago when she retired and was then asked to take on a new role – National Results CO -Ordinator. Máire took the position for another couple of years until she finally retired in 2008. Máire’s sister, Páiricín went to a more dangerous sport, that of world wide mountaineering – Páiricín was 200 metres from the top of Mount Everest in 2006, probably the highest any Cuala person has achieved??. She still climbs today. Caroline Conway like Jo Holden emigrated to New York where they both played camogie, Jo returned to live in Galway while Caroline remained in New York and then went on to play Gaelic Football. Many of that 1985 team remained playing and many years later won a junior title. Some are now seen on the sidelines cheering on the present generation. We must not forget one player from that panel who is no longer with us, that is Philly Durkin who sadly passed away at a young age some years ago. Philly played at junior level for Dublin at one stage. May she rest in peace. A victory of such magnitude would not have been achieved if it wasn’t for the hard work of Dalkey man John Bailey. Many thanks John. John refereed the 1986 All Ireland hurling final and later served 10 years as Dublin County Board chairman.

Máire Uí Scolaí has reminded Cartlann Digiteach Cuala of an important anniversary on the Club Calendar. Its just over 30 years since the great Senior Camogie team of 1985 brought great distinction to the club – 1985, is remembered fondly by Cuala Camogie as the year when they won the Senior B Championship and League Double. While this has not been
