Diary of a Private Investor “SOLON” This new column is aimed at SCAN readers similar to your contributor, who has taken the pen name “Solon”. We are close to, or already past, the point of ceasing to work fulltime; we don’t have a company pension, or what we have isn’t up to much, but we prudently put money aside for our old age during our working years. We now face the problem of investing that money as best we can so that we can enjoy a reasonable standard of living in retirement.

Putting all our money in the bank or Post Office is not an option: the return will simply not be enough. The highest possible interest rate I can earn in the Post Office is equivalent to less than 2% a year, unless I am prepared to tie my money up for 10 years (30% after 10 years is equivalent to 2.66% pa). The interest rate is just half of 1% per annum or less if I want to be able to access my savings at short notice.

What you decide is your business, helped as appropriate by whoever you employ to advise you.

I do not propose to fill the column with guff about the FTSE, the S&P, P/E ratios, et cetera. It is not necessary to use fancy language when talking about investing; in fact, the opposite is the case: it can be used to hide ignorance. Even if you have no background in finance or investment, you should be able to follow the thinking behind investment decisions. If not, the fault is more likely to lie with whoever is trying to do the explaining rather than with you.

From the next issue, I will talk about specific investment decisions, how they worked out, and lessons learned.

Assuming I can earn the equivalent of 1% per annum on average (optimistic in the current environment), I would need to have 2 million set aside to get an income of 20,000 a year.

Because of the security and peace of mind they provide, the Post Office and bank deposits have an important role to play, especially for people who have a reasonable income or pension from other sources, but those of us who are dependent on our savings to generate the bulk of our regular income in retirement must take some calculated risks.

My solution is to spread my money across different types of investment: a small amount on deposit, some in commercial property, but mostly in the stock market, typically in ordinary shares and bonds.

The purpose of this column is to share some of the lessons I have learned over the years about investing in the stock market. Hopefully, there is value for readers, whether you are already an active investor or if you are just thinking of dipping your toe in the water. If you can learn from my mistakes, then only one of us has to learn the hard way.

LET’S TALK is comprised of 3 local ladies Clare, Layla and Rachel who initially met on a Community Addiction Studies Course.

Launching 2014 We wanted to do something in our community to try make a difference, so during our summer walks with our dogs we came up with the idea of Let’s Talk – a community based support framework for parents and guardians of teenagers.

It will provide a place where those who are caring for teenagers can come along and meet others who are in a similar situation. They can share stories and discuss how they might have dealt with a problem they faced and perhaps this will help someone who is experiencing similar issues.

Clare and Layla are Mums of teenagers, Rachel has worked for 10 years with teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds and young offenders, so they have an understanding of what challenges teenagers and parents face today. Issues such as cyber bullying, alcohol, drugs, social networking, education, body image which are some of the worries that we are faced with in local communities today.

We feel there is no real support structure for those who are caring for teenagers and therefore the concept of Let’s Talk emerged. We hope that this will be a place where those who are rearing tweens to teens can come and get some support from others who are in the same boat. We believe that sharing stories about problems and solutions can provide a community based self-help network where we

can find first-hand experience of how to help our teens in a constructive manner.

We have also engaged the help of some established organisations who have agreed to come in and give their expert opinions. As you will see from the poster we already have covered some of the topics facing us today and we plan on covering a lot more. We hope that those who attend will request some topics and we will address them as best we can and try to secure speakers from this area. We have a lot of experience from our volunteering and training, therefore have a network of contacts that we can invite along to give us some guidance.

All 3 members of the group have Garda vetting and child protection training. We hope that our experience will be used in a constructive way and we will try to answer any questions people might have either at the meetings or privately afterwards.

DISCO CUBE coming to Shankill DMC Events situated in the heart of Shankill is a company which started out as a passion for music and has grown into an Events Company that is expanding on a daily basis with fresh innovative ideas.

Growing up in South Dublin owner Dave Carraher always had a love for music that far exceeded the norm.“I’d say on average I spent 80% of my wages from my first job on music and the other 20% I wasted”, says Dave with an air of jest. But despite his fun jovial demeanour when it comes to providing a night you won’t forget Dave is all Business and takes it very seriously.“ My Job when I put an event on for you is to make sure not only that you have a good time but that you leave with memories that will last a lifetime”,.

I was DJing in local pubs and clubs but felt there was a gap in the market for a one stop shop for making your big night as big as you want it to be”. DMC events not only provides you with music that is served up with light systems that would make the Oscars look like a dull affair, but there is also Karaoke ,bouncing castles, giant games, face painters and Giant Costume Kids entertainers such as Cookie Monster and Scooby Doo available.

BBQ centre to much local acclaim and also provided entertainment at Shankil’ls Christmas Festival in the Village while at the same time raising money and awareness for Debra Ireland.“I ran around in my Elf costume for 10 Kilometres but it was all for a great cause and worth the slagging I now get every time I walk through Shankill” says 6 foot 2 Dave, Santa’s biggest elf. The Grotto itself was a roaring success and provided a real Christmas buzz that had been missing from Shankill. So what is next for DMC events? “Disco Cube is my next venture; it will be a Disco Themed room based in The BBQUE Centre in Shankill which is available now to book parties with fun and entertainment for your kids”.

Having run The Dublin Marathon in three and a half hours in 2013 Dave and DMC Events come across as the kind of company that don’t mind going that extra mile to make sure you leave the party with a smile on your face and looks destined to be another local success story.

Celebrating 40 years of SCAN SCAN was first produced during 1973 and at the end of November 2013 Cathaoirleach of Dun LaoghaireRathdown Co. Co. Councillor Carrie Smyth kindly hosted a Reception to celebrate 40years of SCAN. It was held in the hall of St. Anne’s National School and attended by about 120 residents and politicians. Among those present were the SCAN editorial team, our delivery team and those who have faithfully supported SCAN by advertising with us

over a long period, as well as newer advertisers. Representatives of all the schools, clubs and organisations were invited and most were represented.

Especially welcome were those who were founder members of the Shankill Community Association, of which SCAN was originally the mouthpiece. A great night was had by all.

KEEPING EMOTIONAL HEALTH HEALTHY Emotional health is how you feel about yourself, the quality of your Relationships, your ability to manage feelings, and to deal with difficulties. Being emotionally healthy does not mean never going through bad times or having emotional problems. We all go through disappointments, loss and change, it’s part of who we are. While these are normal parts of life, they can still cause sadness, anxiety and stress. The difference is that people with good emotional health have the resilience to bounce back from adversity and stress. One of the key factors about resilience is the ability to balance stress and emotions. The ability to recognise your emotions and express them in the right way helps you avoid being stuck in depression, anxiety and other negative moods.

People who are emotionally healthy, have:

pay attention to your own needs and feelings. Try not to let stress build up. Talk about the things that concern or worry you to friends or family on a regular basis and try to maintain a balance between your daily responsibilities and the things you enjoy. If you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to deal with life’s challenges when they arise. Taking care of yourself includes doing activities that naturally release endorphins and contribute to the feel good factor.

• A sense of contentment • A zest for living and having fun • A sense of meaning and purpose and the flexibility to manage change • The ability to maintain and build fulfilling relationships • A work life balance • Self-confidence and high self esteem Taking care of your body is a powerful first step towards emotional health. The mind and body are closely linked. When you improve physical health, you will automatically experience better emotional wellbeing. Exercise releases powerful endorphins, the chemicals that energise us and lift our mood.

In order to look after your own mental health, it is important to

• Make time for mindfulness and appreciation. Think about things that you are grateful for, enjoy the sunset or simply enjoy the moment.

• Do things that positively impact others. Being useful to others and being valued for what we do can help build selfesteem.

• Enjoy the beauty of nature or art. Simply walking through a garden or strolling through a park, going to a beach, or hiking, can lower blood pressure and reduce stress.

• Social interaction – specifically talking to someone about your problems can also help to reduce stress. The key is to find a good relationship with someone who is a good listener, someone you can talk to regularly, preferably face to face who will listen to you without judgement or interruption. The best way to find a good listener is be one.

The Annual charity match for the Simon Community took place on Sat 28th December and was played this year at Shankill B.C., a mixed game of six rinks and everyone present “got a Game”The teams taking part are ourselves and Dun Laoghaire B.C. with the proceeds amounting to €935 in total, going direct to Simon together with several hampers of foodstuffs for the Homeless people.

The Club’s Christmas dinner was held in the new Pavilion (another 1st) with great food, spot prizes galore, entertaining music and dancing. A brilliant venue and the party went full swing for the many members present. Many thanks to Nuala Shortt and those who helped make the evening so pleasant.

The official opening of our Clubhouse / Pavilion took place on the 19th Dec with the ceremony performed by the Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co.Co., Cllr.

Carrie Smyth who unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion, surrounded by a large number of local Councillors and DLRCC Officers. Also present were representatives from the B.L.I, the Eastern Indoor Bowling Assoc. and our neighbours in the Tennis Club.

Barbara Lyons from SCAN was there while photographers from the Bray People and the Southside People were at hand, taking pictures outside and inside this fine building that we are so proud of now. A speech from Mr. Rory O’Driscoll, Parks Dept and our President Mr. Paddy Pegman followed and among the many present was a member of the local Gardai and she appeared to be enjoying the proceedings, also T.D. for the area Mary Mitchell O’Connor.

Congratulations and well done to Jim Kelly and Paddy Pegman for winning Top Prize in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Community Award scheme with their submission to the Council‘s contest on matters relevant to the local community in general.

Our two indoor teams are competing in their league games and settling into their new surroundings .The Club is purchasing two new mats to replace the older ones that are a bit worn at the sides. As regards the winter League (outdoor) with the men’s captain Joe Byrne away we have to thank Paddy O’Toole for looking after the League teams in this competition that has gained in popularity in recent years.

CITIZENS INFORMATION NEWS USING THE BROWN AND GREEN BINS PROPERLY Since July 2013 all householders MUST use the brown bin for food waste, or else they must compost it at home – this is the law.

The EU (Household Food Waste and Bio-Waste) regulations require: 1. Waste collectors to provide a separate bin and collection service for household food waste.

2. Householders to segregate food waste from other waste and either present it for collection by an authorised collector or compost it at home.

HOUSEHOLDERS MUST NOT PUT FOOD WASTE IN THEIR GENERAL WASTE BIN Only compostable bags certified to EN 1342 (this is indicated on the packaging) should be used to line the food waste bins (brown bin). These bags can be purchased in supermarkets and at Woodies, B & Q, etc. NOTE - Other plastic bin liners / bags MUST NOT be used as they contaminate the composting process.

There are many ways to reduce food waste and save money e.g. by carefully planning menus and sticking to a shopping list, using freezers wisely, using leftovers creatively and controlling portion sizes. Other ideas can be found at www.stopfoodwaste.ie.

The following items must be put in the Brown Bin – fruit and vegetables (whole and peelings); tea bags and coffee grinds; meat, fish and poultry (raw and cooked); bones; left over plate scrapings / kitchen food scraps; bread, cakes and biscuits, eggs and dairy products (cheese, yoghurt etc.); out of date food (also called soiled food) (without the plastic wrapping/packaging); soups and sauces; cereals, pasta and rice; paper towels and paper napkins; crockery; paint tins; old wallpaper; cooking oils; newspapers used to wrap food waste {all food items should be wrapped in two (not one) sheets of newspaper}; cut flowers, old plants, weeds, grass clippings and leaves; plant trimmings (up to finger sized twigs – NOT large ones).

The following items CANNOT be put in the Brown Bin under any circumstances – ashes, coal or cinders; cooking oils; plastic or metal; glass or crockery; tin foil; rocks, gravel or clay; sweet or crisp wrappers; clothes, shoes or rubber gloves; nappies or sanitary items; medicines or pesticides; toothpaste tubes, deodorant cans or toiletries; light bulbs, batteries or electric items; cat litter or other pet faeces.

The charges for using the Brown Bin are as follows – Service charge €5.50 per quarter. Price per lift €2.56 and €0.16 per kilo.

ROLLER DERBY ROLLER DERBY – STRAP SOME WHEELS ON TO YOUR FEET AND GET MOVING WITH THE EAST COAST CYCLONES And it’s a rush. Not just the rush of air flying past your face as you jump the apex, but the usual exercise adrenaline rush with the added bonus of speed and skill.

The game roller derby has been compared to rugby on roller skates for a reason. It is a full contact sport. You fall down - a lot, and people get injured - a lot. But you are taught how to fall correctly to minimise injury. The tricky part is to integrate this new way of falling at the required time. If you know how – please send your answer in on a post card.

There’s 13 women wobbling bambis on roller skates, and I’m one of them. What have I gotten myself in to?

The bin outside is overflowing with plastic from everyone’s brand new safety gear. I am not alone.

By the end of the first session, everything and everyone was well broken in. Friendships had begun to form, and by the time we were added to our own Facebook group I was hooked.

Before you can even think of joining a team, there is the appropriately named ‘fresh meat’ to endure. This is a 12 week crash in roller skating, covering everything from how to skate (NOT one foot in front of the other), to what exactly roller derby even means, the millions of rules, and it gives you a chance to get to know the other members of the cult you have just joined.

The camaraderie of being on a team was new to me. I’d never been a big one for team sports (apparently yoga doesn’t count). I found that it made me push myself harder and further, which is something I need. Your team mates are there to support you when you need it. Whether you fell and need to be dragged up or need to get just one more lap in, the cheering is constant.

This is not the same kind of workout you get with Davina McCall in your sitting room. You are pushed to the point of contemplating how tired you have to be before you just pass out, and would anyone really mind if I collapsed right here, or should I skate out of the way of the other skaters.

The average ages of skaters is between 25 and 45, which shows that this isn’t a sport restricted to the young free single and svelte. All walks of life are here, from solicitors to mums to social workers, and a lot of primary school teachers for some reason.

You have to be completely immersed in the task at hand and there is no time for wondering if you need to pick up some bread on the way home. This is not the gym.

The team is sponsored by The Harbour Bar and Platform Pizza, both on Bray sea front, so the social events are very well looked after.

If you have any questions – watch the Drew Barrymore/Ellen Paige movie Whip It. It will teach you very little about roller derby, but it’s a really good movie.

We’re having an open skate night on February 24th at 8pm in Ballywaltrim Community Centre, and fresh meat will officially begin on March 5th in St Killian’s Sports Complex at 8pm (both in Bray).

So get your skates on, come on down, try it out, ask lots of questions. We’re also looking for referees and non-skating officials if the idea of full contact is too much for you. Be sure to stock up on frozen peas for any bumps you might inflict upon yourself. Because as they say - “If you’re not falling down a lot, you’re not trying hard enough!” - a good motto in life, and especially in roller derby.

Check your life at the door because skating takes up 100% of your brain power. It is both mentally and physically exhausting, but when you’re in there it’s just you and the room and wheels on your feet.

You are not thinking of the load of washing you didn’t do, the email you had to reply to, if there’s milk in the fridge, or whether your bum looks big in this.

WOMEN IN POLITICS – Jennifer Cuffe Politics is about representation, representing your community, representing people and their view. Politics makes our society fairer by putting people on an even footing. It is about how we relate to one another, who we are and how we want to be perceived. It is about solving problems and finding consensus.

Since the establishment of Dail Eireann in 1919, just 91 women have been elected in the Republic of Ireland; our Dáil has never been less than 85% male. At local level, women make up 16% of elected representatives, an increase of just 1% in ten years, despite comprising about one third of the membership of the main political parties. Internationally Ireland is ranked 78th of 187 countries in the world classification table of women in politics, and 20th of the 27 EU member states for female political representation.

With 50.6% of our population being women, these figures are startling. A whole group of our society is not being adequately represented. It is universally acknowledged that balanced participation in political decision making leads to a more representative and effective democracy thus leading to a better and more inclusive society.

The 2003 Council of Europe Recommendation, supported 47 European Governments, gives a comprehensive outline of supportive measures that are successful in increasing women’s representation in politics; including leadership [, training programmes, women’s network and a ‘data bank’ of

potential women candidates.

The Irish organization of Women for Election are a not-forprofit, non partisan group that are wholly focused on providing practical supports for women seeking to enter political life with their mission to inspire and equip women to succeed in politics. They offer a range of holistic programmes to succeed in this mission.

Last May Women for Election held the first ever political campaign school in Ireland. This was a three-day intensive course with its aim to EQUIP their twenty participants to successfully run a campaign. I was one of these participants and I found that their cross party holistic approach gave me the tools and confidence to run for the local elections this May. Fianna Fail is also committed to the promotion and encouragement of greater female participation within the party and this is reflected in the Gender Equality Policy Document.

I believe we need a valued social approach to politics with balanced representation in our local government and beyond so that our policies are inclusive, fair and dynamic.

Jennifer is a 27 year old barrister and a native of Cabinteely and a Fianna Fail Local Election Candidate. Jennifer attended our Lady of Good Counsel National School and later Holy Child School in Killiney before studying Law in Portobello College, Dublin. She is currently practicing on the Dublin Circuit with a particular specialisation in family law.

Shankill Active Retirement Association A belated Happy and Healthy New Year to you all! Our committee has one or two interesting ‘happenings’ lined up, including a talk at our February meeting from Reggie Goodbody who has entertained us several times before with tales from his lifetime experience.

December was a busy month for SARA. Opinion was divided about whether to have a Christmas outing at lunchtime or in the evening – so it was decided to do both! Fifteen or so enjoyed a festive lunch in the Baracuda Restaurant in Bray. Then, on the Thursday before Christmas twenty members went by coach to the National Concert Hall for a pre-performance meal in the restaurant and then to a wonderful concert given by The Three Sopranos - Claudia Boyle, Regina Nathan and Cara O’Sullivan - accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra. They sang a wide selection of operatic arias and Christmas music and were ably compered by John Murray with his usual dry sense of humour. A great evening to get us all in the Yuletide mood.

A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed at our December meeting, followed by music supplied by Maurice Nangle, with some members taking to the floor.

Shankill Football Club ALL-WEATHER PITCH OPENED IN SHANGANAGH PARK throughout the year. The availability of this facility is extremely important for our football club, as it gives the chance for our teams to train on a proper all weather surface during the week, something that has not been possible for many of our teams in the past.

The all-weather training pitch in Shanganagh Park (located next to Shankill Football Club’s clubhouse) was officially opened by An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Carrie Smyth on 19th December 2013. Shankill FC would like to thank Counsellors Carrie Smyth and Denis O’Callaghan for their work in helping to provide this much needed facility for Shankill. A special thank you must also be given to PJ Keating and Dave Griffin for their trojan work over the past two years in bringing this project to fruition.

The facility will be fully utilised by the club from Monday evening to Friday evening and on Saturday/Sunday mornings. Shankill FC is continually striving to improve our facilities so that your child can continue to enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle in a modern and safe environment.

The pitch, designed in accordance with FAI guidelines, was funded by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the cost of providing the floodlighting (€11,000), was fully funded by Shankill FC. The pitch will be used for training by Shankill FC and will also be open to other users. The floodlighting will ensure that we can use the facility to provide winter and late evening training for our teams

Shankill F.C. would like to thank our players and their parents for supporting the “Dawn to Dusk” football marathon in December. The event was a huge success and helped raise vital funds towards the cost of the floodlighting for the allweather pitch. Without this generous support from the Shankill community the club would not have been able to fund this vital development.

St. Anne’s School News is a dedicated story-telling area where teachers or guests can take a class for a story session.

Our 6th Class pupils have become TV stars with their appearance on the RTE ‘Elev8’ show. Congratulations to Donal and Ellie who were chosen to represent their classes in the TV studio. In fact, everyone from 2nd Class to 6th is now getting ready to be a star as we begin our preparations for our end of year show. More about that in coming issues.

St Anne’s School has many aspects to its personality, many roles to fulfil. One of the most important of these roles has to be helping our children to read. To that end we spend long hours planning and preparing lessons and material that will lead to that magical breakthrough into literacy. We will test and screen for any difficulties that our children encounter and come up with schemes and strategies to help them to overcome those difficulties. We will give our parents the best advice we can. We carry out complicated standardised tests and then analyse the results seven ways to Sunday. But . . .

That’s just the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the job. One of the most important things that we as teachers and parents can do for our children is to give them a real love of reading; and that’s where our library comes in. St Anne’s School Library has long served the pupils; providing extra reading material and encouraging the reading habit. Over the past couple of months a dedicated team of parents has worked with the staff to give our library a major facelift and to fully assess and re-catalogue our stock of books. A huge amount of thought and effort has gone into putting the magic into reading and story-telling for our pupils and we are very proud of the results. Selected books are featured and displayed attractively to help young readers to choose a book. There

every week, (and we must thank the collector too!), the Shankill Beavers, who donate an extravagant hamper each Christmas, and the donor of some beautiful gifts for our special Christmas raffle. To those, and everyone who helps, gives and supports us whether just at Christmas or throughout the year, we are extremely grateful. Special thanks too to Macel’s crew, who help her prepare for the Book Sale each month.

The first was our annual Carol Service, with pupils from the three schools in the parish singing beautifully, under the direction of Pauline Lennon. Fr Cllr. And then it was time for the Christmas parties. With its largest attendance ever, the centre’s own Christmas lunch went with a swing, with a splendid meal catered by the staff and entertainment by Cathy White. And at the Wednesday Club party Santa arrived with gifts for all, there were raffle prizes galore, and a special party tea.

We should very much like to thank all the kind people who are so generous in their gifts to us, not only at Christmas, but throughout the year: we would especially thank the patrons of Brady’s, where a collection is taken up for SOFA

We are six points off the leaders Liffey Valley with a game in hand. RSFC have had a good season so far and have been competitive in all our matches, we hope to build on it and push on in the second half of the league and do well in the league cup.

Now with the Christmas break out of the way the lads are back training hard. The new all weather pitch is great for the fitness on the cold winter nights. The Manager Keith Jennings will have the lads fit and ready to go.

EUROPEAN FOOD DAY — 6th Class in Rathmichael School have been doing projects on European countries following a programme they are covering on European Studies in the school. As part of this they had to produce food from the country they were studying. At 11.00am they set up the room and each child spoke about the country they chose and how they made the food they provided. After this everyone was invited to taste each others food.

There was a lovely atmosphere and we all had a delicious lunch.

Many thanks must be given to their teacher Ms. Ferris for her enthusiasm and encouragement on this project. The choir sang in St Joseph’s Home at Christmas. Their voices The projects were a credit to the children. helped to lift the resident’s spirits.

The Scoil Mhuire Gaelic Team were brought by teachers Ms. Cronin and Mr. Sheridan and S.N.A.s to Croke Park for their Annual Visit on Saturday evening, February 1st for the league match between Dublin and Kerry. At the time of going to print we do not know who was smiling after the match!!”

BOOKS TO READ PRISONERS OF WAR: BALLYKINLAR INTERNMENT CAMP 1920-1921

In November 1920 the mass round up of IRA and Sinn Fein members was carried out by Dublin Castle with most of the internees being transported to Ballykinlar Camp in Co. Down where they were held for over a year, not being released until December 1921. Again internees had to contend with very difficult living conditions, attempts by the British authorities to discover wanted IRA men in the camp with at least one being discovered by a clever ruse and was subsequently executed for his part in ‘ Bloody Sunday‘. 3 internees were shot dead by guards for no apparent reasons who were not held accountable for their actions while a further 5 died from maltreatment. This is a very comprehensive history of this internment camp and the daily conflict between the internees and their British captors and comes with lists of those who were held in it compiled from a number of different sources.

ON MY HONOUR: ONE MAN’S LIFELONG STRUGGLE TO CLEAR HIS NAME

By way of contrast to the above books this is the remarkable story of Superintendent William Geary who in 1928 was extremely active in Garda operations against the IRA in post civil war County Clare and had become a major menace to their operations. Without any prior notice he was summoned to a meeting before Commissioner Eoin O’Duffy, Chief Superintendent David Neligan and Deputy Commissioner Eamonn Coogan and accused of accepting a bribe of £100 from the IRA based on a false message sent by the IRA through the post in the certain knowledge that it would be intercepted and acted upon. Geary was transferred to Dublin and without any by charges being laid again him, a court trial, or being allowed to challenge the actions of his superiors, was simply dismissed from force, and ultimately had to emigrate to America to build a new life which he successfully 30 SCAN

This book deals with his long campaign to clear his name which finally happened in the 1990s when his story was featured in a number of Irish newspapers with the Government finally recognizing that he had been unfairly treated, was restored to his former rank and given a formal apology. The book also includes many of the 1928 reports which show that there was no clear evidence against him.

St. Brendan’s College News CHRISTMAS HAMPER APPEAL — I would like to thank all of our parents who contributed so generously to the Christmas Hamper Appeal for the St. Vincent de Paul. A total of six hampers were delivered to needy families in the area in the run-up to Christmas. Thanks especially to Ms Dwane and Ms O’Neill and the Transition Year class for their help with this project.

TRANSITION YEAR — Our Transition Year class have just returned from their two-week work experience placement.

The reports from the employers are excellent and we hope the students have benefitted greatly from their chosen placement. Among the other activities they experienced during November were: • Visit to Croke Park • Coastwatch Programme • Visit to Science Gallery • Visit to St. Michans Crypt TABLE TENNIS — Our junior and senior table tennis teams are performing very well under the guidance of Mr O’Connell. The senior team drew 3-3 with High School Rathgar with excellent performances from Niall King, Paddy O’Donnell, Nikita Polokovs and Aaron Mulvey. The junior team had a great 5 – 1 win over Palmerstown CS with excellent performances from Alex Vortolomi, Artur Vodanaic and Ralph Lacap. The junior team are currently leading their group.

SHANKILL CLASSICAL MUSIC CLUB Two thematic programmes sandwiching a mixedgenre concert made up a varied bill of fare for the recent meetings of the Shankill Classical Music Club. In November, Jim Bruce featured women performers. Just one singer – Kathleen Ferrier in a famous Mahler song – but instrumentalists of many hues: piano, harpsichord, violin, cello, clarinet and trumpet, in solo pieces or concerto movements. Women conductors are a rarer breed, and we had recordings from three of the best-known. Two Americans were featured: Marin Alsop (who conducted in Dublin in October) in a movement from the Dvorak “New World” symphony; and JoAnn Falletta with the Ulster Orchestra (of which she is currently the principal conductor) in a piece by Holst. Slightly less prominent nowadays, perhaps, is the English conductor Sian Edwards; she made a splash with a famous all-Tchaikovsky record which launched her recording career in 1990, and from that we heard the well-known and boisterous Marche Slave.

In his December programme, Bernard Clarke drew on that same Tchaikovsky record for the romantic tone poem Francesca da Rimini. The centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten was commemorated with his Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell (better known as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra). Spanish music from the same era as Purcell (late 17th century) also inspired the guitar-and-orchestra Fantasía para un gentilhombre by Rodrigo, from which we heard a movement. The earliest original music – and the only vocal piece – was an early 17th century setting by

Michael Praetorius of the Christmas hymn In dulci jubilo. We also heard an overture by Verdi and ballet music by Delibes, and the concert ended in high spirits with the ever-popular Radetzky March by Johann Strauss.

The January programme, presented by Frank Murray, was dedicated to music written specifically for the cinema. Frank noted that much of the music of Hollywood – on which he focussed – drew on the great 19th century inheritance of romantic music. Indeed,“spotting the influence” provided a talking point for several of the pieces (take a bow, Wagner, Rachmaninov, Mahler!). In a broadly chronological programme Frank identified two great periods of Hollywood music: the 1930s to early 1960s, dominated by composers – including several European émigrés - such as Alfred Newman, Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Franz Waxman and Ernest Gold, but with contributions also by stay-at-home Europeans such as Nino Rota and Maurice Jarre; and a resurgence since the 1980s, featuring composers Vangelis, Ennio Morricone, Patrick Doyle, Howard Shore, James Horner, Hans Zimmer and Jerry Goldsmith.

BANANA BREAD BANANAS IN THE FREEZER

CINNAMON BANANA BREAD

This is a handy tip from my sister in the USA who is a regular Banana Bread maker – her family and friends love it!

INGREDIENTS 225g/8oz Odlums Cream Plain Flour 1 Level Teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 Teaspoon Bread Soda 150g/5oz Caster Sugar 50g/2oz Butter (room temperature) 2 Eggs Vanilla Essence 2 Ripe Bananas (mashed)

If you have more bananas than you can use before they get too ripe, put them in the freezer until you have time to make Banana Bread. Here is how to do it: Peel off the skins before they become too ripe – when they are still yellow.

Roll each one in Wax paper and place in a freezer zip lock bag. They are good for a couple of months. When you are ready to make Banana Bread, take them out of the freezer and let them defrost somewhat. Mash them up before adding to the banana bread mixture.

Sieve the flour, cinnamon and soda into the mixture and stir until ‘just’ mixed.

Transfer to the prepared tin and bake for about 40 to 50 minutes until risen and golden brown or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Cool in tin for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire tray to get cold.

Method Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C/Gas 4, lightly grease and base line a 900g/2lb loaf tin.

Put sugar, butter and eggs into a bowl and beat until creamy, scraping down the bowl every so often!

Add the bananas and vanilla essence and beat on low speed.

TIPS: Because Banana Bread is moist it can be eaten without putting a spread on it.

You can make this into a cake by adding dried fruit or chopped walnuts.

Top it with whipped up low fat cream cheese for a luxurious and tasty finish.

COUNCILLORS’ QUESTIONS Councillor Denis O’Callaghan CO-OPERATIVE HOUSING I have now got the agreement of Dunlaoghaire Rathdown County Council to provide a number of sites to interested applicants who would be in a position to raise funding to build their own homes (subject to approval by the Dept of Environment and Local Govt) The idea is that suitable applicants would form a Co-Operative to commence the process of financing and building their own homes.

And if the H.S.E or any other organisations would provide or be willing to provide such services” In response to the above Motion please find an overview of the services available in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Area: Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) in Primary Care see children who have Developmental Coordination difficulties, in relation to their speech/language difficulties. Children attend for blocks of Speech and language Therapy with their parents where the nature of their speech difficulties are explained and their articulation and/or language difficulties are worked on Dyspraxia can coexist with other developmental disorders, notably Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and depending on the child’s school placement, may be addressed through primary Care or other multidisciplinary services.

Some children once diagnosed with a significant Developmental Coordination Disorder in the absence of another developmental disability such as moderate ID or ASD are referred to COSMOS which is an Enable Ireland service. These children would usually remain with Primary Care SLT until picked up by COSMOS. COSMOS service offers comprehensive screening, assessment and treatment for children over the age of 5 years until they leave school at 18 years. The catchment area for this service is South County Dublin (including west County Dublin) and Kildare.

Children are assessed by Pediatrician and Occupational Therapist supported by the Educational Psychologist on the team. This team assesses the child’s needs and based on needs, intervention is then offered. A plan is agreed with parents and teachers as to how best to support the child through their school years.

Intervention for children attending includes: • Individual therapy as appropriate.

• Group intervention for social skills, handwriting, skill development – targeted at developmental stages or as appropriate to need.

• Parent education and support – groups for parents to develop their understanding and skills to support their child.

• Teacher Education and support – targeted at schools where children attending the service attend – to support teachers in their understanding work with children with DCD and building relationships with the schools on ongoing basis.

• Information Evenings and sessions for parents’ teachers and students on relevant subjects.

• ‘Springboard Activities’. Many of these activities are themselves seen as beneficial to developing and improving physical health and fitness. The concept of ‘springboard’ is to give the children confidence and basic skills to enable them to participate with their peers in mainstream activities and have included: Drama, Dance, Swimming, and Taekwondo.

As these children are typically developing apart from their motor coordination difficulties ‘respite’ is not seen by Enable as a requirement for their service.

Enable Ireland Sandymount: provides training/services for children who suffer solely from dyspraxia. These children would usually be under the remit of the SLT therapists within Primary care.

COUNCILLORS’ QUESTIONS Councillor Carrie Smyth PROPOSED PAY & DISPLAY PARKING CONTROL SCHEME – SHANKILL DART STATION CAR-PARK At its meeting on 2nd December 2013 the Dun Laoghaire Area Committee AGREED to implement pay parking control at Shankill DART station car park from 08:00 to 19:00 hours, Monday to Friday, at a charge of €1 per hour or €3 per day.

Total number of parking spaces 139 + 6 disabled parking spaces.

Disabled permit holders are not required to pay for parking in disabled bays.

On the 13th December the Recycled Christmas Decoration Celebration Ceremony took place. They included the following winners from the schools in Shankill: Rathmichael National School - Isabelle MacNeaney - Christmas Tree ‘This 3D Christmas tree was made using an old Pringles container and a weetabix box. Isabelle then used her artist skills to paint the decoration and make it look like a real Christmas tree.’

The body of the train is made from an aluminium can with a plastic bottle used to make the chimney and cardboard all of which was sprayed with gold paint. To finish the festive look a stylish tartan ribbon is tied around the Nikita Sosnars cabin of the train.’

COASTAL DEFENCE STRATEGY The following Coastal Defence minor works will be carried out in the first half of 2014: • repairs to the seawall at Seapoint • repairs to the seawall at the old Sandycove Baths • repair of an existing fence and erecting a new section of fence at the access ramp to Killiney Beach from Military Road.

In relation to the two projects for which funding applications were made, these applications were unsuccessful.

An application for funding for the strengthening of the access ramp at Corbawn Lane, has been made to the OPW on two separate occasions, but to date the Council have been unsuccessful in receiving funding. The Council will continue in their efforts to identify a funding stream so that works on this access can be progressed.

An application for funding for the preparation of the Coastal Defence Strategy Study has been made to the OPW, but was unsuccessful. This report was completed in 2011, so it is reasonable to assume that funding will not be made available for this in the future. In the future the Council’s efforts will be focused on sourcing funding for the works as recommended in the Coastal Defence Strategy Study.

DUN LAOGHAIRE TOASTMASTERS OPEN TO MEMBERSHIP!

SHANKILL TENNIS CLUB The Champs Turkey Shoot was concluded in Shankill Tennis Club on the 15th December with Darren Heffernan winning the competition followed closely by Ian McManus & Edwin O’Dwyer. This annual men’s event was as always, a great success, with a large turnout who enjoyed the festive atmosphere both on and off the court!

The Ladies Turkey Run was equally festive. It ran over four weeks with Cathy Grehan winning 1st prize. There was an impressive turnout at the Ladies Christmas Party, held on December 13th. Some social tennis was followed by mulled wine, dinner and dancing, with music provided by Liam Brady.

Both our Men’s and Ladies’ Floodlit League Teams had great success, reaching the semifinal stages and earning promotion to higher classes. The hard work and commitment by all involved is highly commendable. Ladies’ Captain, Maria Dowling and Men’s Captain, Matthew Connolly, are particularly pleased to see their teams reap the rewards of their endeavours.

JUNIOR TENNIS NEWS Congratulations to Shankill’s Ellie Murphy who was participating in the final stages of the national winter match plays. Ellie came 3rd in U14 girls singles, which was a fantastic achievement.

Mattie, who hails from Duniry, County Galway, enjoyed a distinguished playing and coaching career with his club Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry. He also represented Galway at minor, Under 21 and Senior levels and featured on the All-Ireland under 21 winning team in 1983. Most recently, Kenny, who is recognised as one of the most highlyregarded hurling coaches in the country, served alongside Anthony Cunningham as Galway Senior Hurling Coach from 2011 to 2013, having been handed the reins after guiding the county’s U21s to All-Ireland glory in 2011. Mattie had previously coached Galway’s 2005 All-Ireland U21 winning team.

In 2012, they brought Galway a first Leinster Senior Hurling Championship success and took the Tribesmen to the brink of a first Liam McCarthy Cup success in 24 years, losing to Kilkenny after a replay.

In 2013 Mattie and Kilkenny’s Martin Fogarty guided the victorious Leinster team to success in the Super 11’s Celtic challenge played at Notre Dame University.

Ó MAOLÁIN SCRAPBOOK – A TREASURE TROVE OF GAELIC GAMES ACHIEVEMENT Some time ago, Cartlann Digiteach Cuala reported it had struck gold – having just acquired access to a unique Scrapbook documenting hurling & football in Dalkey.

It contained material associated Harold Boys N.S. Dalkey and Dalkey Mitchells GAA Club– two institutions that occupy a unique position in the Cuala story.

The Album, compiled by legendary Harold Dalkey schoolmaster Proinsias Ó Maoláin, covers a period from the 1950s to the 1970s. It contains a wide range of handwritten notes, photographs, newspaper cuttings, songs and poems – all penned by the author or his pupils. Overall, it paints a vivid picture of how Gaelic Games were organised in and around Dalkey during the period.
