Sensitivity, sure instinct, love for detail and creativity are all indispensable if you want rooms to radiate their very own, relaxing appeal.

Fingerspitzengefühl, Liebe zum Detail und Kreativität sind unentbehrlich, wenn Räume ihre ganz eigene, entspannende Wirkung entfalten sollen.

“As a colour designer I know how colours and materials affect people. And I know how to sensitively translate those into creative room concepts,” says Ulrike Gaffga. “So for me, it is the people behind my projects that count most.”

That aside, the owner of Heidelberg-based interior design studio Gaffga Interieur Design attaches great importance to naturalness: “For me, colour design is closely linked to nature, to visual ergonomics. My designs invite nature into buildings and transform these into recreational and relaxing places. After all, there is no better place to relax than outdoors, is there not?”

Private owners as well as companies or hotels count amongst Gaffga’s many discerning clients – clients who are not satisfied with ‘off-the-peg’-designs, but who are looking for the extraordinary, the ’wow factor’. “My clients expect consistent, harmonious design concepts that reflect an individual style. I adapt to these individualities with designs that invite you to marvel and relax. I consider a project completed only when my customers are 100 per cent satisfied with my implementation of the design concept.”

Up in the air MiA.’s new album Limbo is all about finding optimism in trying times. Prepare to be swept off your feet: for MiA., the world has turned upside down over the past few years. But this has turned out to be a good thing, in every sense.

With Limbo, the band has created both a mature and innovative new album, capturing the period of evolution leading up to its birth. We have spoken to singer Mieze Katz about what two decades of creativity mean to the inner workings of a band and about the change and growth that this naturally brings.

After completely reshuffling both the creative process and production team, the song KopfÜber (Upside Down) may well nail

the current state of MiA. best: “KopfÜber is very much a song inspired by our live performances: clear cut, earthy and very much a rock song. You get the unfiltered voice and guitar, the bassline and the rhythm, and that’s basically it.” None of the muss or fuss that sometimes comes with studio editing – instead, you are presented with the essence of a feeling: ‘I take my heart in my hand and jump / cold water, upside down / a roaring choir / and nothing is what it was before’.

Breaking with routine The feeling of being in limbo or upside down has marked the entire period leading up to the band’s first new album in five years. For example, for the first time in more than 20 years of the band’s history, Mieze has teamed up with ‘the boys’ (long-time collaborator and guitarist Andy Penn, bass player Robert Schütze and drummer Gunnar Spies) in the creative process of writing melody lines and lyrics.

This was a challenge at first, but quickly turned into an enriching experience, after an initial couple of bumps in the road were successfully maneuvered around: “Now, we have some really great, important song lyrics. That’s exactly what makes Limbo so dear to us. We drummed up the courage of Issue 84 | March 2020 | 15

breaking through our decade-old routines and it has turned out to be a very rewarding experience.”Sharing that new approach and its outcome with their long-trusting fans was still a jump into unknown waters: “Performing the first set of new songs live has been a test of courage,”the singer offers, “but our fans were very open and it was a pleasure to see how many have stayed loyal to us through the decades.”

Growing up together Both band and fans have shared such a long time together, that at this point, the band members actually feel like they know many of them at heart: “Our fans sometimes bring their kids to the concerts now – we even have a special area for them, in the pit close to the stage, where we know they can be safe. So, we’ve actually had ten to 15 kids at some performances. And if you then hear that people have named their daughter Mia, in reference to us, that’s when things come full circle.”

Creative family Originally springing from a school band at Berlin’s John Lennon Gymnasium in 1997, both Mieze and Andi are founding members of the renowned ‘noughties’ shooting star band, while Gunnar Spies joined them in 2002. Together with Robert Schütze on bass, they are by now not only friends, but also family: “One of the merits of collaborating creatively over a long period is that you somehow turn into a family of friends.

We inspire and nourish each other daily and we all feel blessed to be working together. This entails that if one of us feels a little down or has a bad day, the others will automatically be there for them, especially on tour.” Touring and live performances are in general MiA.’s creative source: “We find ourselves on tour. For us, every night is different and we expect something new from every single performance. Our mutual goal is to stay true to who we are, wherever we are, and we tell each other that ‘this will be the best night ever’ before each single concert.” The best kind of MiA. day is consequently a ‘normal’ day on tour: “Tumbling from the bus with sleepy eyes, sharing our first cup of coffee and then venturing into town to tell each other afterwards what we have experienced – and then proceeding to rock the house!”

Postmodern in style MiA. has been labelled as both an electropop and electropunk band, as well as drawing comparisons to Neue Deutsche Welle bands, such as Ideal, in the past.

However, the live performances clearly also show both rock and post-punk tendencies. Extremely poetic lyrics with almost Dada-ist word play and double meanings help the band to arrive at a kind of meta level of truth, which is possibly the best outcome of any creative work an artist can hope for. And the newly blossoming collaboration between Mieze Katz and ‘the boys’ on the lyrics has been generating thoughtful and unexpected lyrics: for example,about the quirks and challenges of relationships. Sorgenfalter (Worry Folder), which features a soaring intro by Gunnar Spies, deals with emotional support: ‘Clear your emergency lane so I can rush in and see what’s troubling you’.

Getting to the bottom of things “Our new album is very much about living in the here and now,” explains Mieze, proceeding to quote her own song line: ‘What we experience will one day be mem-

ory’ (Tortenguss).“We always ask ourselves: What is this about? What drives us, also concerning our take on society and our environment?” Apart from taking part in environmental awareness-promoting events such as the Live-Earth concerts in Hamburg, the band has shown a clear position against far-right tendencies, as well as the destructive side of capitalism resulting in problems such as climate change and the refugee crisis. They have also supported Amnesty International’s ‘Make some noise’ project with their own version of John Lennon’s Mind Games.

Auf dem Weingut Leo Lahm trifft Tradition auf Moderne. Seit sechs Generationen befindet es sich in Familienbesitz und auf 18 Hektar Weinbergen im rheinhessischen Ensheim und Albig werden vor allem Riesling und Dornfelder angebaut. Heute bilden das Vater-Tochter-Team Leo und Laura das Herzstück und bringen gemeinsam frischen Wind in das traditionelle Handwerk.

Das Weingut Lahm bewirtschaftet typische rheinhessische Rebsorten - sowie auch ausgewählte Nischenrebsorten wie Huxelrebe, Würzer und Cabernet Mitos - die sich sehen beziehungsweise schmecken lassen. Die Weine überzeugen vor allem durch ihre Gradlinigkeit. Der Charakter der einzelnen Rebsorten ist fein ausgebaut und klar definiert.

Dabei legt die sympathische Winzerfamilie großen Wert auf eine schonende Verarbeitung im Einklang mit der Natur.

Das Motto ‚Weniger ist mehr‘ gilt auch im Weinkeller, wo der Wein sich selbst überlassen wird. Das Konzept geht auf, denn die Vinothek des Weinguts war eine der ersten, die das Gütesiegel ‚Rheinhessen AUSGEZEICHNET‘ tragen durfte.

Geführt wird das Weingut von Leo Lahm, der große Unterstützung von seiner Tochter Laura bekommt. Laura, die 2016/17 zur Rheinhessischen Weinkönigin und 2017/18 zur deutschen Weinprinzessin gekürt wurde, liebt es selbst zu experimentieren und hat seit 2012 ihren eigenen Wein: TileHill ist ein Cuvee aus WeißburLeo Lahm mit seiner Tochter Laura.

Guests can sit close to the fireplace and experience first hand how the cook prepares the meat and raclette.

Das Restaurant Baschi im Schweizerischen Geschinen am See bietet seit nunmehr fast 70 Jahren Grillspezialitäten direkt vom offenen Feuer an. Die Gäste sitzen nah an der offenen Feuerstelle und können so miterleben, wie der Chef das Fleisch oder Raclette zubereitet.

Just like in 1952, when the restaurant was founded, the barbecue is situated in the right-hand corner of the restaurant and creates a unique atmosphere. “By now we run the family business in the third generation and have a very loyal national and international customer base,” says the young owner Sebastian Baschi.

Wie schon 1952 bei der Gründung des Restaurants befindet sich der Grill in der rechten Ecke des Restaurants und schafft so eine unverwechselbare Atmosphäre. „Mittlerweile führen wir das Familienunternehmen in der dritten Generation und erfreuen uns einer treuen nationalen und internationalen Stammkundschaft“, erklärt der junge Inhaber Sebastian Baschi.

Next to nearly forgotten delicacies like calf’s kidney and liver, guests can also enjoy a classic T-bone steak or Côte de Bœuf ’Swiss Grand Cru’. They are served with homemade blueberry and herb butter. The meat is always of the highest quality and for the fire, the restaurant only uses local larch wood.

“This way, we can offer our guests an honest and genuine food experience,” Baschi explains.

Vegetarians and cheese lovers will also appreciate the menu: next to Alpine cheese ravioli from the region, they can also try a fine raclette – prepared directly over the fire. The extensive wine menu is comprised of 100 different wines, among them many specialities and rarities.

Situated right at the banks of the Rhine, in Basel’s Museum Tinguely, one can find the Bistro Restaurant Chez Jeannot, whose interior has been completely refurbished. Since January, the establishment has thus presented itself as a modern and cosy French-Mediterranean bistro that is equipped with works

by Jean Tinguely. “It invites museum visitors for a relaxing cup of coffee, as well as families and walkers, with its range of bistro delicacies – plus, it is great for business lunches, too,” smiles Lukas Burkart, restaurant manager of Chez Jeannot.

Unmittelbar am Rheinufer in Basels Museum Tinguely befindet sich das Bistro Restaurant Chez Jeannot, wessen Interieur kürzlich einer Generalrenovation unterzogen wurde. Seit Januar präsentiert sich das Chez Jeannot nun als modern-gemütliches, französisch-mediterranes Bistro, welches mit Werken von Jean Tinguely ausgestattet ist. „Es lädt zum entspannten Café für Museumsbesucher ein, spricht mit seinen Bistrospezialitäten Familien und Spaziergänger an und ist die ideale Location für einen Businesslunch“, freut sich Lukas Burkart, Restaurant Manager des Chez Jeannot.

In a culinary sense, the Chez Jeannot offers fresh, seasonal and regional dishes, such as the Angus Entrecote with meat from Switzerland, or the restaurant’s classic Cordon bleu. “We put special emphasis on Swiss products and regionality – also with our Swiss wine specialities,” says Lukas. Further highlights are the sun terrace and the beach bar in summer, which especially attract visitors of the ‘Rheinschwumm’. Seasonal offerings like picnic hampers, fondues in winter or etagere-brunches round off the annual offering. Furthermore, the bistro can be booked for private and business events, too.

A deep connection to wine production can be found at the estate’s Restaurant Vicania as well. “Open from the beginning of March to the end of December, our restaurant gives guests the chance to step deep into nature, while being only a few minutes away from the city,” says restaurant owner Gaby Gianini. Head Chef Francesco Sangalli creates dishes

inspired by regional flavours and local produce – some of them, such as oil and honey, coming right from the estate. The Chef can often be seen strolling through it, looking for wild herbs and berries to bring an authentic taste to the table. Among the restaurant’s specialities are homemade stuffed ravioli, tasty pork cheeks and lake fish. “Pasta, bread and focacce are also homemade,” says Chef Francesco Sangalli.

All dishes are created with the estate’s wines in mind: the award-winning and certified organic Merlots grow on rare volcanic terraced soils at Lake Lugano and allow for perfect wine and food pairings.

Eine noch frische Frühlingsnacht oder ein lauer Sommerabend: Für viele ist das der richtige Zeitpunkt, den Grill anzuschmeißen und später ein paar Holzscheite auf das Feuer zu legen. Feuerschalen und Körbe sind ideal für Gärten und Terrassen, haben aber den Nachteil, dass Gästen oft Asche auf die Kleidung weht und selbst leichter Wind den Rauch mal in die eine oder die andere Richtung pustet. Diese Erfahrung machte auch Designer und Künstler Uli Sorglos vor ca. 20 Jahren auf einer Gartenparty. Nicht nur musste er ständig vor dem Rauch flüchten, auch das Feuer anzuzünden, war nicht ganz einfach. Und das brachte ihn auf eine Idee: Warum nicht einen Feuerkorb mit einem Abzugsrohr verbinden und so die positiven Effekte eines Kamins

nutzen – nämlich Raubabzug und leichtes Anzünden?

Wieder zuhause fing er an zu tüfteln. „Er bastelte aus Metallteilen und einem Rohr einen Prototyp – und verbrannte sich zunächst einmal die Finger“, sagt Marlis Roggwiller, die Geschäftsführerin der Sorglos Design AG. Das System aber funktionierte und so begann Uli Sorglos mit dem Feinschliff des Designs. „Es wäre schade, wenn ich ein Feuer habe und könnte das nicht zum Grillen nutzen“, dachte sich Uli Sorglos und konstruierte einen Sockel rund um den Feuerkorb, um verschiedene Spieße anbringen zu können. Seit der Markteinführung 2014 ist weiteres Zubehör dazu gekommen, so dass man beim Feuerrohr inzwischen von

einer ‚Außenküche‘ sprechen kann. Das Feuerrohr bietet optimale Hitze, so dass die Speisen nicht verbrennen, das Grillen aber nicht zu lange dauert.

Das Feuerrohr bietet Wärme für ein gemütliches Beisammensein im Garten und größte Sicherheit. Es eignet sich auch für kleinere Terrassen. Das Rohr lässt sich nach oben und unten verschieben und kann nach dem Grillen über den Korb gezogen werden, um diesen zu verschließen. So erlischt das Feuer und man braucht keine Angst zu haben, dass Glut weggeblasen wird.

A new ice age: luxurious gelato The days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising – time to start thinking about our favourite ice cream ahead of the upcoming warm season!

Founder Hans Merki recalls the beginnings of Bern-based company Giolito: “I somewhat realised that, despite its singular taste, original Italian ice cream is nowhere to be had in Switzerland. So why not act on this myself?”

Spring 2005 saw the introduction of Giolito’s yummy ice cream to the market, and the number of aficionados has been steadily growing ever since.

What makes the ice cream unique? “‘Giòlito’ is old-Italian for joy, indulgence. Both are inherent to our ice cream, its quality and taste. Giolito celebrates the original taste of its ingredients as it doesn’t contain flavour enhancers, pow30 | Issue 84 | March 2020

der or additional colour. Our fruit varieties, for example, contain 50 to 70 per cent pure fruit! You won’t find that in any other ice cream. We have made quality our credo and therefore don’t compromise. Our ice cream is manufactured in a small, family-run business in northern Italy, which feels closely linked to the product. The milk, for example, is pasteurised on site, and the ingredients have to meet the highest quality and taste standards. It is, amongst other things, this pronounced care in production and the quality of ingredients that makes our ice cream truly unique.”

Next to classic flavours such as strawberry, chocolate or vanilla, Giolito offers

a wide range of some rather unusual varieties. Merki elaborates: “A lot of creativity goes into Giolito as we continue to search for new varieties and improve already existing ones. The results are sometimes exotic flavours such as green tea, litchi or grapefruit. We also cooperate with culinary masterminds who compose taste explosions exclusively for us. One of them is ‘The Witcher’, Stefan Wiesner, who has created the flavour Caffè Bianco, for Giolito.”

And what can we expect in the future?

“We introduce three special flavours each spring and autumn. This April, this will be Citronella, Yogurt e Passione and Mara de Bois. We are also working on Oronero, a collection of exclusive ice cream, which will redefine the terms ‘taste’ and ‘luxury’.”

Eine neue Eiszeit: Gelato der Extraklasse Langsam werden die Tage wieder länger, die Temperaturen steigen. Höchste Zeit, sich mit dem Lieblingseis der kommenden warmen Jahreszeit zu beschäftigen.

Gründer Hans Merki erinnert sich an die Anfänge das Berner Unternehmens Giolito: „Ich stellte irgendwann fest, dass es in der Schweiz kein original italienisches Eis gab - obwohl gerade dieses Eis für seinen einzigartigen Geschmack bekannt ist. Warum also nicht selbst tätig werden?“ Im Frühjahr 2005 war es soweit: die ersten Sorten des leckeren Speiseeises von Giolito kamen auf den Markt. Die Zahl der begeisterten Anhänger wächst seitdem stetig.

Was macht das Eis so besonders? „‚Giòlito’ ist Altitalienisch und bedeutet soviel wie Freude, Genuss. Beides drücken wir in unserem Eis, in seiner Qualität und seinem Geschmack aus. Giolito zelebriert den Originalgeschmack seiner Inhaltsstoffe, denn es kommt ohne Geschmacksverstärker, Pulver oder Farbe aus.

Unser Fruchteis beispielsweise besteht zu 50 bis 70 Prozent aus der reinen Frucht! Das findet man nirgends sonst.

Qualität ist unser Credo, und deswegen gehen wir keine Kompromisse ein. Unser Eis wird in einem kleinen norditalienischen Familienbetrieb produziert, der sehr nah am Produkt ist. Die Milch wird beispielsweise direkt vor Ort pasteurisiert, die Inhaltsstoffe müssen höchsten qualitativen und geschmacklichen Anforderungen entsprechen. Es ist unter anderem diese Sorgfalt bei der Herstellung und die Qualität der Inhaltsstoffe, die unser Eis so einzigartig macht.“ Neben so klassischen Geschmacksvarianten wie Erdbeere, Schokolade oder Vanille, bietet Giolito eine große Auswahl eher ausgefallenerer Sorten an. Merki hierzu: „Wir widmen

uns Giolito mit großer Kreativität, erforschen neue Geschmacksrichtungen und verbessern die bereits existierenden. Das Ergebnis sind eher exotische Geschmacksvarianten wie Grüner Tee, Litchi oder Grapefruit. Zudem arbeiten wir eng mit kulinarischen Ideengebern zusammen, die exklusiv für Giolito neue Geschmacksexplosionen komponieren. Darunter beispielsweise ‚Der Hexer’ Stefan Wiesner, der exklusiv für uns die Geschmacksvariante Caffè Bianco kreiert hat.“ Was dürfen wir in der Zukunft von Giolito erwarten? „Wir stellen jedes Jahr im Frühjahr bzw. Herbst je drei Sonderkompositionen vor. Im April sind das die Sorten Citronella, Yogurt e Passione und Mara de Bois. Indulge in flowers, plants and nature – Top ten garden highlights of 2020 1 March marks the beginning of spring, according to the meteorological calendar, and with spring comes the warm sun rays and the early songbirds right outside our windows. But nothing says spring more than the first wonderful flower buds and the much-anticipated colourful displays in our gardens and parks. That’s why we now celebrate the arrival of all that horticulture with the following feature where we present the top ten garden highlights across the DACH region.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a garden, or even a balcony, so heading to public parks and gardens, as well as fascinating garden shows is a must – not only for horticulture fans. Even though one would associate garden shows more with England, as the country is notorious for its large and extravagant garden shows, the countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland have, in fact, quite an impressive garden show portfolio on offer, 36 | Issue 84 | March 2020

too. Let’s therefore take a look at the top ten gardens and garden shows.

1) English Garden, Munich A large public park in the centre of Munich, the English Garden was created in 1789 by Sir Benjamin Thompson, later Count Rumford, for Prince Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria. It stretches from the city centre to the north-eastern city limits and counts as one of the world’s

largest urban parks. No wonder, then, that it has a lot to offer for horticulture fans. Not only does it boast beautiful beer gardens, the possibility to go surfing and numerous other leisure activities, but it has a lot to offer for plant enthusiasts, such as vast flower displays, lush plant mazes and beautiful landscape architecture.

2) Jardin Anglais, Geneva This great green space is iconic because of its beautiful flower-clock sculpture. But the Jardin Anglais in Geneva has far more to offer than merely this, such as an 1862 fountain, as well as beautiful views across Lake Geneva. No wonder it’s a tourist hot spot! 5) China Garden, Zurich

Located right by the lake at the Zürichhorn, the Chinese Garden in Zurich was a gift from the city’s Chinese partner town of Kunming. At the centre is a pond with a small island, pavilions and even a small palace on the banks. It is classed as a temple garden and is one of the highest-ranking gardens outside of China. Definitely a thing to put on your Zurich to-do list.

9) Hofgarten, Innsbruck The city of Innsbruck is well worth a visit for a multitude of reasons. For nature enthusiasts, we have a special tip, however – the Hofgarten. It’s a protected park that is located on the edge of the old town.

Covering an area of around ten hectares, the park invites visitors for either extensive walks or extensive relaxation – all inclusive of gorgeous flower and plant displays, as well as lush green fields and woods.

10) Japanese Garden, Leverkusen If you have always wanted to go to Japan, but were never able to afford the plane ticket, why not head to Leverkusen’s Japanese Garden instead, for a couple of hours? Here, you can find an authentic Japanese experience – without ever leaving Leverkusen. Upcycling confronts us with the question of how we deal with seemingly worthless things. A project in Kenya is now providing answers to some of those questions.

Das Thema Upcycling stellt uns vor die Frage, wie wir mit scheinbar wertlosen Dingen umgehen. Ein Projekt in Kenia gibt Antworten.

Sarah Müller, fashion designer from Stuttgart, always wanted to combine fashion with social aspects. Her six-month work visit to the Karai Children Vocational Centre, as well as the ubiquitous colourful cement bags, inspired her idea to work with the people at the centre.

Sarah Müller, Modedesignerin aus Stuttgart, wollte Mode schon immer mit sozialen Aspekten verbinden. Während ihres sechsmonatigen Aufenthalts im Karai Childrens Vocational Center kam sie auf die Idee mit den Menschen hier zu arbeiten. Die vielen bunt bedruckten Zementsäcke waren Ideengeber.

Established in 2017, there are now six tailors working for Nyuzi Blackwhite – a project which breathes new life into used cement bags. Does the name have a special meaning?

“Sure. Nyuzi is Kiswahili for threads – our products’ threads that connect people, emotions and worlds,” explains Müller.

Hat der Name eine besondere Bedeutung? „Ja! ‚Nyuzi‘ ist kiswaheli und bedeutet Fäden - die Fäden unserer Produkte, die Menschen, Emotionen und Welten miteinander verbinden”, erklärt Müller.

Each piece of the collection of water-repellent, ultralight and durable bags and accessories is unique. It is sewn by one tailor from start to finish and labelled with a name tag – “a tag that makes each piece personal, thereby connecting people across continents,” Müller underlines.

Jedes Stück der Kollektion aus wasserabweisenden, ultraleichten und strapazierfähigen Taschen und Accessoires ist ein Unikat. Es wird von einer Schneiderin von Anfang bis Ende gefertigt und mit ihrem Namenslabel versehen. „Das Label macht jedes Stück zu etwas Persönlichem und verbindet so Menschen über die Kontinente hinweg.“

European art history that is somewhat different Dresden is always worth a visit – but even more so since the end of February, when the Old Masters Picture Gallery and Sculpture Collection up to 1800 together started showcasing their world-famous works in the extensively renovated, modernised and reopened Semper Building at the Zwinger.

Alongside the Church of Our Lady, the Zwinger, with its Semper Building, is the most popular destination for Dresden visitors – and not surprisingly, as the building complex is one of Germany’s most important Baroque buildings. Gottfried Semper added the Zwinger to the Semper Building in the 19th century, which he built for the royal collection. After a seven-year-long partial closure, the revamped museum building now has numerous highlights on offer to visitors.

New permanent exhibition in the Semper Building The Semper Building’s reopening has been celebrated with a new permanent exhibition since the end of February. Surrounding one of the world’s most significant art works, Raffael’s Sistine Madonna, visitors can look forward to a unique tour through European art history, which just 42 | Issue 84 | March 2020

results in a unique tour through the epochs of European art and culture history,” says Stephan Koja, director of the Old Masters Picture Gallery and Sculpture Collection up to 1800.

Europäische Kunstgeschichte mal anders Dresden ist immer eine Reise wert – seit Ende Februar umso mehr, denn im umfangreich sanierten und modernisierten, neu eröffneten Semperbau am Zwinger präsentieren erstmals die Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister und die Skulpturensammlung bis 1800 gemeinsam ihre weltberühmten Werke.

Neben der Frauenkirche ist der Zwinger mit Semperbau das beliebteste Ziel von Dresdenbesuchern. Kein Wunder, denn der Gebäudekomplex mit Garten- und Springbrunnenanlage gehört zu den wichtigsten Barockbauwerken Deutschlands. Im 19.

Jahrhundert ergänzte Gottfried Semper den Zwinger um den Semperbau, den er für die kurfürstlich-königliche Sammlung bauen ließ. Nach siebenjähriger Teilschließung erstrahlt das berühmte Museumsgebäude nun in neuem Glanz und hat einige Highlights im Gepäck.

Neue Dauerausstellung im Semperbau Die Wiedereröffnung des Semperbaus wird seit Ende Februar durch eine neue Dauerausstellung gebührend gefeiert. Rund um Raffaels Sixtinische Madonna, einem der populärsten Kunstwerke der Welt, erwartet die Besucherinnen und Besucher ein einzigartiger Rundgang durch die europäische Kunstgeschichte, die sich in kaum einem anderen deutschen Museum so eindrucks-

voll und vollständig anhand unbestrittener Schlüsselwerke der jeweiligen Epochen nachvollziehen lässt wie in Dresden.

Erstmals präsentieren die Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister und die Skulpturensammlung bis 1800 gemeinsam ihre Werke. Besucher dürfen sich daher auf die Integration der imposanten Dresdner Skulpturensammlung in der großen, von Tageslicht durchfluteten Antikenhalle im Ostflügel freuen, und nach Themen angeordnete antike Bildwerke, Plastiken und Skulpturen der Frühen Neuzeit begutachten, die im direkten Dialog zu ausgewählten Gemälden aus Renaissance und Barock stehen. Auf diese Weise wird die Wechselwirkung zwischen Malerei und Plastik, besonders aber die Bedeutung der antiken Skulptur für die Malerei der Renaissance und des Barock vor Augen geführt. „Die Fülle an herausragenden Gemälden der Kunstgeschichte beeindruckt mich bei einem Gang durch die Galerie und die Depots immer wieder aufs Neue. Ergänzt um die qualitativ exzeptionelle Skulpturensammlung

ergibt sich ein einzigartiger Rundgang durch die Epochen europäischer Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte,“ sagt Stephan Koja, Direktor der Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister und Skulpturensammlung bis 1800.

Ein bezaubernder Kunstgenuss Neben der Modernisierung des Gebäudes wurden in Hinblick auf die Wiedereröffnung über 20 Meisterwerke sorgfältig restauriert und zahlreiche Rahmen aufgearbeitet und angefertigt. Neue Wandbespannungen in eleganten Farben, eine umfangreiche Akzentbeleuchtung sowie multimediale Vermittlungsformate ergänzen das Museumserlebnis und sorgen für einen bezaubernden Kunstgenuss.

Neben der Dauerausstellung auf drei Etagen wird eine neue Wechselausstellungsfläche im Erdgeschoss des Westflügels im April mit einer Sonderausstellung zu Raffaels Tapisserien eröffnet. Daneben wurde im Mittelrisalit des ersten Obergeschosses ein Kabinett geschaffen, in dem kleine, fokussierte Präsentationen gezeigt werden können.

‘I constantly look for new challenges’ German actress Annika Ernst has her fingers in many pies. She speaks to Discover Germany, Austria & Switzerland about her latest project, tips for a more sustainable lifestyle, the needs of older people in our society, and much, much more.

How did you become an actress? Has this always been your dream profession?

A. Ernst: It actually has! I had already performed my own sketches in front of my family when I was in primary school. This was my first stage, so to speak.

You live in Berlin. What makes this city so special to you? Why is Berlin your chosen home?

A. Ernst: I love the city’s history and its unbelievable cultural diversity that you can find at every corner. Additionally, Berlin has a fantastic cinema and theatre scene.

How do you choose your roles? What is important to you in the process?

A. Ernst: I am a person that loves variety and I constantly look for new challenges – that’s also how I approach choosing my roles. I love to play multifaceted characters through which I can enter an entirely different world and therefore am able to leave my comfort zone.

Let’s speak about Blutige Anfänger – what can viewers look forward to in this new ZDF crime series?

A. Ernst: The series is narrated in a really quick and modern way; the team of young investigators’ overall approach already distinguishes itself from ‘classic’ crime thrillers through the fact that police cadets have to solve the cases via sometimes quite unconventional methods, in the series.

The episode Nachtwache in which you play deals with the lack of caregivers in Germany’s retirement and nursing homes. You also advocate the needs of

older people through your work with HelpAge Deutschland e.V. In what way do you believe older people fall behind today and how can we change that?

A. Ernst: I think it’s really important to keep one’s eyes and ears open for older people in everyday life. Especially in larger cities, more and more older people find themselves on the margins of society through gentrification, and live in solitude. Sometimes it’s just little things we can all do to help. For example, when we see that older people need assistance with their grocery shopping. The greatest thing when helping out is the conversations that come about – in the end, I often have the feeling that I received way more than I gave.

You’ve been entirely vegan again since the beginning of 2019. Why? What’s the reason behind this decision and why should we all put more emphasis on a plant-based diet?

A. Ernst: First and foremost, I’m vegan because I simply love the taste. I love the plant-based diet as I feel way fitter and more balanced. Additionally, us consumers have more power than we think we do – we can actually accelerate a change in economy and industry through our habits and ways of consumption. Of course, each person can only contribute a small part – but many small parts result in something bigger in the end.

Last year, you also lived entirely plasticfree for a month. How hard was that?

Was that even possible in our society?

A. Ernst: At the beginning I had profound respect for this ‘plastic-free challenge’, but

it was actually way easier in the end than I initially thought – Berlin has many great weekly markets and several plastic-free shops that I discovered during this time.

It only gets hard with products from the refrigerated section; apart from that, you can find many plastic-free alternatives. To live entirely without plastic permanently is probably quite hard but I also believe that we can achieve quite a lot if everyone is doing one’s own stint.

Do you have any general tips for a more sustainable everyday life?

A. Ernst: Only buy unpacked fruits and vegetables – they already have natural packaging! And bring your own box for the deli counter, as well as your own coffee-to-go cup. Do a vegan or vegetarian day sometimes. Change to green power – it’s not much more expensive than ‘regular power’.

Clothes don’t have to be new – there are great second-hand shops and exchange platforms on the internet. In general, go without over-consumption – it doesn’t only save money but you also learn to be happy about individual things again. And very important: don’t forget to have fun. It’s great to do one’s bit for a better world – each in their own way. Additionally, I find exchanging ideas with like-minded people important. That’s why I attend events like the ‘be a mover’ Daimler talk – to get inspired by future-orientated solution approaches, and to learn new things.

What else is planned for 2020?

A. Ernst: I will cross the Alps in summer which will definitely be a challenge – I will go by myself and without a mobile phone!

What other dreams and wishes do you have for the future?

A. Ernst: I hope that my family and I will stay healthy for a long time – that’s the most important thing for me.

The much-anticipated season for nature’s Instagram-worthy cherry blossom beauty starts around the end of March.

One such beautiful destination is a range of hills called the ‘Kaiserstuhl’ (Emperor’s seat) in the German state of BadenWürttemberg near Freiburg. The formerly volcanic landscape is known to show early signs of spring each March and also has plenty of wonderful vineyards. It is blessed with a lot of sunshine, which makes a 46 | Issue 84 | March 2020

Exploring lakes and forests A mesmerising region during spring is the Vulkaneifel in Rhineland-Palatinate. Here, nature lovers can admire the maars. These ancient wonders of nature go back to volcano-related eruptions thousands of years ago. The volcanic craters are now filled with water thanks to numerous mineral springs and make for a beautiful landscape. It might be a little too early to go swimming, but it’s a perfect setting to take a deep breath of crisp air and have a little picnic in the sun.

The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, located in the centre of Germany near Kassel, is as green as it gets. Think beautiful beech forests and, of course, the idyllic Lake Edersee. The park itself is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage ‘Ancient German Beech Forest’. Here, you can find hiking trails as far as the eye can see and you can also learn about the extraordinary biological diversity of European beech forests up-close.

It’s around 1,860 metres above sea level and the landscape is simply stunning, portraying a rough beauty of its own kind. The area is best explored either on foot or with a mountain bike.

For those wanting to stay a couple of days in one place, have a look at Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut. The picturesque ancient salt mine village is a UNESCO

World Heritage Region in a breathtaking mountain setting. It spreads along the shores of Lake Halstätter See, but due to space being limited, some hous-

Watching the signs of spring from above is an option if you pop by the Highline 179 near Reutte in Tirol. Still a bit of an insider’s tip, the suspension bridge measures an impressive 406 metres and is only held by four suspension ropes. The panoramic views from high above (114 metres) are simply beautiful, and the bridge connects the castle ruins Ehrenberg with Fort Claudia – a great day out for the entire family. The fascination of flying Faszination Fliegen – up close – hautnah Even today, flying has lost none of its fascination. Now, you can take a look behind the scenes of one of the places where flying is an everyday business.

Stauch elaborates: “We have a true-to-scale representation of Hamburg Airport on display – including model airplanes taking off and landing, original radio messages, engine noises and vibrating seats.”

Where are the business planes parked? These and many other questions are answered on our tours.”

Certain areas, such as the panorama terrace or the model show’s premises are available for rent for incentives, company events, birthday parties or similar.

Many events characterise the cultural life in the central Black Forest. In May and June, during the weeks of brass band music and hiking, there are concerts at some really special places. In August and September, the region’s museums host special days on which visitors can explore the exhibitions for free, and in October, the many direct marketing farmers of the central Black Forest show visitors how they work.

Kids can also enjoy a holiday in the central Black Forest. The nature is exciting and can be discovered on different adventure paths, together with known characters such as ‘Räuber Hotzenplotz’. Another great activity for kids is exploring the old town of Zell am Harmersbach, by following the small stream.

The wild and romantic Spa Garden, established in 1699, is the heart of Bad Wildbad: with its historic buildings, plant varieties and river Enz flowing next to the footpath, the park has a lot to offer.

Hikers and cyclists will also enjoy the fresh air and calming atmosphere. With 93 per cent covered by forests, the city offers a special experience of nature. Additionally, the upland moor on the Kaltenbronn is well worth a visit.

Bad Wildbad is a destination for culture enthusiasts. Originally built as a magnificent 19th-century bath, the Forum KönigKarls-Bad now serves as a space for conferences, concerts and events. Guests can experience the city’s traditional thermal waters in the Palais Thermal or the Vital Therme. The city also hosts the yearly Rossini Festival at unique locations like the treetop walk or the Royal Spa Theatre.

A special spectacle in snow The annual Engadin Skimarathon is becoming more and more popular every year.

This is really no wonder, though, as the world’s second-largest cross-country skiing race is a special event that shouldn’t be missed for a multitude of reasons. Expect an exciting sports event for the entire family in front of snow-covered mountains, a party atmosphere and great food and drinks.

Since 1969, thousands of cross-country skiers have taken on the marathon course between Switzerland’s Maloja and S-chanf on the second Sunday of March.

The marathon week also sees the Engadin half-marathon, the Engadin women’s race, as well as the Engadin night run.

The fact that the race is fully booked yet again this year shows just how popular the event is. The women’s race and the 64 | Issue 84 | March 2020

night run are also more in demand than ever and have established new submission records for 2020. Over 14,000 skiers from over 60 nations will attend the 42-kilometre-long main race this year.

This year, the Engadin marathon week will begin on Sunday, 1 March, with the 21st Engadin women’s race across 17 kilometres from Samedan to S-chanf.

On Thursday, 5 March, visitors can look forward to the Engadin night run which is also 17 kilometres long and will lead participants from Sils to Pontresina. The main event highlight, the 52nd Engadin Skimarathon, will then be held on Sunday, 8 March.

Registration records all around Since the beginning of November, the Upper Engadine has seen lots of snowfall, so more than 100 kilometres of crosscountry skiing trails have already been groomed. “Enthusiasm for the Engadin Skimarathon seems to grow from year to year,” smiles Menduri Kasper, CEO of the Engadin Skimarathon. This winter, the limit of 14,200 registrations will apply again and due to the fact that the snow came so early this year, the marathon was sold out earlier than in the previous two years. The registrations for the women’s race and the night run have also grown significantly and have surpassed the previous year’s submission record.

Snow, Champagne and mountain panorama And so what can visitors expect? The marathon village, for example, which can be found in Pontresina this year, is the main meeting point. Here, visitors can look forward to great accommodation options, the Via Maistra shopping mile, product presentations, tests, workshops, fan and souvenir shops, degustations, competitions, a broad entertainment programme, games for all age groups and much, much more. And all of this will of course be held in front of a breathtaking and mesmerising, snow-covered mountain panorama.

In Munich, for example, one can find the distinctive ‘Umschreibung’. Erected in 2004

by Olafur Eliasson, a Danish-Icelandic artist, the sculpture reminds the admirer of a winding staircase in the shape of a double helix. It is a nine-metre-tall artwork made out of steel which is a favourite for photographers, both professional and aspiring.

Hidden within an office building, it is a sight not to be missed.

If you are into pretty bridges, you should head to the ‘Rakotzbrücke’ in Kromlau’s Rhododendronpark. Not only is the park the largest park in Saxony, which sports rich nature, beautiful gardens and other architectural attractions that invite visitors to enjoy extensive walks, the medieval-looking bridge is an outstanding sight to behold. It dates back to the 1860s and impresses with a special feature: its high canopy and its reflection in the water of the river create a full circle.

Another rather impressive structure is the Semperoper in Dresden. Designed

by Gottfried Semper in 1841, it was rebuilt in 1878 by his son Manfred Semper, following a fire. When it was bombed in World War II, it was reconstructed again in 1985. Today, visitors from near and far flock to the impressive opera house to attend concerts, while marveling at the exceptional architecture.

While it might not look too unusual from the outside, the inside reveals an entirely different story: dazzling white, spacious halls and a vast collection of books make the nine-storey building a tourist attraction of the most unique kind. Some people even say that the library has a meditative effect on them.

Now, let us look at some more contemporary structures. In Stuttgart, for example, the public library is a real eye-catcher.

If you are ever in Berlin, you should head to the Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz. Designed by Helmut Jahn, it is a

trend-setting complex of buildings. The open, public space is a favourite for locals and visitors alike, and offers a natural atmosphere to be enjoyed all year round.

In 2020, vielmo architekten plans to continue applying modern management tools such as Lean Management and BIM on a deeper level, as well as streamlining the company structure to meet contemporary social demands on an internal basis, also.

The focus will be set on team building as well as individual development, training and support: structured expansion, just as mirrored in their building designs.

The recently finished extension and conversion of the Rottweil vocational training centre forms another milestone for the office on the prestigious long term project. The successful competition entry was chosen for this year’s da! Architecture in and from Berlin exhibition in March/April, curated by the Berlin chamber of architects. The extension building, with a multifunctional event space, cafeteria and individual study rooms, was designed as a glass pavilion sculpture, presenting an open plan, light-flooded atmosphere which reminds one of the free-spirited glass pavilion designs from the Bauhaus era. It is marked by extensive glass fronts and a white, airy expanse, structured by dark window profiles, doors and other individual design elements – a space which helps open the 72 | Issue 84 | March 2020

mind for intake and learning without distractions. The existing library and PC-bar, as well as class and prep rooms, were also converted, and both the conversion and extension mark a new design concept which is to influence all coming architectural reconstructive measures.

For architect and urban planner Julian Vielmo, it all started as a fresh alumni of the Berlin Technical University with a competition win in 1997, which led to opening the vielmo architekten office Berlin the same year. Alongside Vielmo, Dorothee Kurz shares managerial and financial responsibility, as managing partner. Both public and private investors form the client base at vielmo architekten: today, the office still generates most projects from its

Struktur und freier Raum Bei vielmo architekten basiert jeder Objekt-Entwurf individuell auf Basis der zukünftigen Nutzung sowie dem städtebaulichen Kontext, dem ‚Genius Loci‘. Nachhaltige Planungskonzepte setzen einen weiteren Akzent auf die Verantwortlichkeit für Nutzer, Gesellschaft und Umwelt.

Für den kürzlich vollendeten Umbau mit Erweiterung für das Berufsschulzentrum Rottweil konnte das Büro sein Langzeitprojekt Dank eines Wettbewerbsgewinns erfolgreich fortführen. Der Entwurf wurde für die im März eröffnende Ausstellung der Berliner Architektenkammer da! Architektur in und aus Berlin ausgewählt. Der Erweiterungsbau mit multifunktionalem Veranstaltungsraum, Mensa und Studienräumen zeigt eine gläserne Pavillon-Skulptur mit teils offenem Layout und lichtdurchfluteten Räumen. Sie erinnert an den freien Geist einiger Gebäude im Glas-Pavillon-Design der Bauhaus-Ära.

Der Bau ist von den großflächigen GlasFassaden und hellen, offenen Räumen geprägt und wird lediglich durch dunkle Profile und Türen sowie weitere Design-Elemente

strukturiert – ein Ort, wo der Geist durchatmen und ungestört Neues aufnehmen kann.

Bestandsräume wie Bibliothek, PC-Bar sowie Klassen- und Vorbereitungsräume wurden ebenfalls umstrukturiert: Zusammen bilden Umbau und Erweiterung so ein neues gestalterisches Gesamtkonzept, welches alle zukünftigen architektonischen Maßnahmen beeinflussen wird.

Für Architekt und Städteplaner Julian Vielmo begann der Berufsstart 1997 zum Ende seiner Studienzeit an der TU Berlin mit einem Wettbewerbsgewinn, welcher noch im selben Jahr zur Öffnung des neuen Büros vielmo architekten in Berlin führte. Dorothee Kurz teilt heute die Verantwortung im Bereich der kaufmännischen Leitung und des

Architecture as a language Bauhaus or deconstructivism – architecture has always managed to fascinate people and to inspire planners to excel. Architectural designs are particularly successful if they reach people and appeal to their senses.

The PASD – Planning Group for Architecture, Urban Development and Monument Preservation – is an agency with some particularly appealing designs. But just how do they do it?

Architect Jürgen Wrede, one of founders of Hagen-based PASD, knows the answer: “I think that our designs’ success is mainly owed to their transparency and liveliness.

Designs which, on the one hand, appeal to the senses and, on the other hand, reflect the basic needs of every human being. It is safe to say that we ‘speak’ architecture or that the language of our designs speaks directly to people.” Designs such as Busan Metropolitan City, the awarded urban development plan for the South Korean city Busan, or the double arched bridge at Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen, which has been awarded the Renault 80 | Issue 84 | March 2020

Award for Traffic Design, certainly count amongst them.

So, PASD specialises in public buildings?

“No. When we founded PASD in 1987, we took part in competitions for the conversion of listed industrial buildings and then relatively quickly became known throughout Germany as specialists for restoration and monument protection. Projects such as the conversion of the Nordstern colliery into a contemporary office building, for which, amongst other things, we received the Business Week/Architectural Record Award, still count amongst our specialties.

Our spectrum, naturally, has expanded over time, though. Our 84 employees at locations in Hagen, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Heidelberg plan innovative shopping centres throughout Europe as well as public buildings for cities, municipalities and

educational institutions. Together with project developers, we also realise residential constructions and commercial or private construction projects,” stresses architect Helmut Feldmeier, founder of PASD. And how does PASD see its future?

“Sustainable building is an extremely important topic for us. This year, we will begin with the construction of a sustainable building for an international research institute. It marks our first step on this new path,”say Wrede and Feldmeier. www.pasd.de

Architektur als Sprache Bauhaus oder Dekonstruktivismus – Architektur hat die Menschen schon immer begeistert und die Planer zu wahren Höchstleistungen angespornt. Sie ist dann besonders erfolgreich, wenn sie die Menschen erreicht und deren Sinne anspricht.

Die PASD – Planungsgruppe für Architektur, Städtebau und Denkmalpflege ist eines der Büros, deren Designs immer wieder überzeugen. Wie geht das?

Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Jürgen Wrede, einer der beiden Gründer des in Hagen ansässigen Architekturbüros PASD kennt die Antwort: „Ich denke, dass der Erfolg unserer Designs vor allem an der transparenten, lebendigen Architektur liegt, für die wir stehen. Architektur, die auf der einen Seite die Sinne anspricht, auf der anderen Seite aber auch die Grundbedürfnisse eines jeden Menschen spiegelt. Man kann sicherlich sagen, dass wir Architektur sprechen beziehungsweise die Sprache unserer Designs die Menschen direkt anspricht.“ Designs wie Busan Metropolitan City, der preisgekrönte Städtebau-

plan der südkoreanischen Stadt Busan oder die Doppelbogenbrücke am Gelsenkirchener Nordsternpark, die mit dem Renault Award für Traffic Design ausgezeichnet wurde, gehören auf jeden Fall dazu.

Die PASD hat sich also auf Bauten des öffentlichen Raums spezialisiert? „Nein. Als wir PASD 1987 gründeten, nahmen wir an Wettbewerben für die Umnutzung denkmalgeschützter Industriebauten teil und wurden dann relativ schnell bundesweit als Spezialisten für Sanierung und Denkmalschutz bekannt. Projekte wie der denkmalgerechte Umbau der Zeche Nordstern zu einem zeitgemäßen Bürohochbau, für den wir unter anderem den Business Week/Architectural Record Award verliehen bekamen, gehören auch nach wie vor zu unseren Steckenpfer-

den. Mittlerweile hat sich unser Spektrum aber natürlich erweitert. Unsere 84 Mitarbeiter an den Standorten Hagen, Berlin, Hamburg, Köln und Heidelberg planen europaweit innovative Shoppingzentren genauso wie Gebäude des öffentlichen Raums für Städte, Kommunen und Bildungseinrichtungen. Zusammen mit Projektentwicklern realisieren wir auch Wohnungsbau beziehungsweise Bauvorhaben im gewerblichen und privaten Bereich“, betont Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Helmut Feldmeier, ebenfalls Gründer von PASD. Und wie sieht man bei PASD die Zukunft? „Das Thema ‚nachhaltiges Bauen’ ist für uns enorm wichtig. Noch in diesem Jahr beginnen wir mit dem Bau eines nachhaltigen Gebäudes für ein internationales Forschungsinstitut. Theatres as a spatial experience and a place to connect As an expert for cultural architecture and ‘chiming rooms’, the architect and university professor Jörg Friedrich founded his architectural office in Hamburg in 1986. Over time, opera houses and theatre projects have become one of the internationally renowned architect’s main focus points. Since 2000, Jörg Friedrich has developed his architectural theatre concepts with the pfp planungs gmbh, founded solely for that purpose.

A focus on multi-layered theatre experiences “Theatre buildings of the future are innovative public spaces where, next to the

staging of Shakespeare, Ligeti and Verdi, people can meet all day long to read, rehearse, exhibit, make music or study.

Through its architecture, the theatre of the future can become the new cultural meeting point in the city centre or its periphery,”says professor Jörg Friedrich. That includes a varied utilisation plan that also reflects in its architecture: theatre, opera, concerts, experimental stage, library, film studio, music academy and acting school as well as public rehearsal spaces, rooms for practising, workshops and artists’ flats are united in a unique cultural project and are therefore publicly perceptible.

Theaterbauten als Raumerlebnis und Ort der Begegnung Als Experte für Kulturarchitektur und ‚klingende Räume‘ hat der Architekt und Universitätsprofessor Jörg Friedrich 1986 sein Architekturbüro in Hamburg gegründet. Opernhäuser und Theaterprojekte sind im Laufe der Zeit zu einem der Arbeitsschwerpunkte des international bekannten Architekten geworden. Seit 2000 setzt Jörg Friedrich seine architektonischen Theaterkonzeptideen gezielt in der eigens dafür gegründeten „pfp planungs gmbh“ in Hamburg um.

Die ,pfp planungs gmbh‘ gilt inzwischen europaweit als Marke für hochwertige Kulturarchitekturen, deren Bauten und Projekte mit einer Fülle von Architekturpreisen ausgezeichnet wurden. „Ein Kulturbau, der einfach nur funktioniert, ist noch lange keine Architektur“ Diese Philosophie spiegelt sich in den zahlreichen Theaterbauten und Opernhäusern, für die das pfp-Team verantwortlich zeichnet. Dazu gehören die Staatsoperette in Dresden (2017), der Neubau des Stadttheaters in Gütersloh (2007) oder das Opernhaus in Erfurt (1997). In Gütersloh entschlossen sich die Architekten dazu, den Theaterbau nicht in die Breite auszudehnen, sondern – um Platz zu gewinnen – gleich in die Höhe zu gehen – bis hin zu einer Sky-Lobby im obersten Stock als krönender Abschluss. Die transparente Fassade bezieht die Umgebung in die Architektur des Theaterfoyers und damit in den Theaterneubau ein.

‘A cultural building that simply functions is not yet architecture’

This philosophy is reflected in the various theatre buildings and opera houses the pfp-team has been responsible for, among them the Staatsoperette Dresden (2017), the Stadttheater Gütersloh (2007) and the opera house in Erfurt (2007). In Gütersloh, the architects decided not to extend the building in its width but in its height, to gain more space – up to a sky lobby on the top floor as an architectural highlight. The transparent façade reflects its surroundings and integrates them into the architecture of the foyer and, therefore, the whole building.

Die Architektur und das Design von Jörg Friedrich und seinem Team reflektiert nicht nur die innovative Raumnutzung zu Beginn der klassischen Moderne. Sie ist zugleich ein Blick in die Zukunft der Stadt, eine Vision für die Zukunft im Theaterbau. „Die architektonischen Raumerfindungen von pfp planungs gmbh sind einfach und komplex zugleich“, sagt der Architekturprofessor und pfp-Firmengründer Jörg Friedrich.

Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte liegen in Deutschland und Italien: Jörg Friedrich studierte Architektur in Stuttgart, Italienisch und Kunstgeschichte in Siena und Perugia und arbeitete lange Zeit in Venedig und Rom. Zusätzlich zu seiner Arbeit als Architekt hat Jörg Friedrich seit 1989 als Professor für Entwerfen und Architektur an verschiedenen Universitäten in Italien, in der Schweiz und in Deutschland gelehrt. Am Max Planck Institut in Rom forschte er unter anderem zur Architektur der italienischen Renaissance und zum italienischen Rationalismus und wurde mit dem ‚Villa Massimo Stipendium‘ in Rom ausgezeichnet. Seine Theaterbauten wurden neben dem ‚Thüringer Staatspreis‘ oder dem ‚Sächsischen Staatspreis‘ mit vielen anderen Architekturpreisen prämiert.

language and art history in Siena and Perugia. For a long time, he also worked in Venice and Rome.

Additionally to his work as an architect, since 1989, Jörg Friedrich has been a professor for design and architecture, first at various universities in Italy and Switzerland, later in Germany. Among other subjects, he researched at the Max Planck Institute in Rome on architecture of the Italian renaissance and Italian rationalism, and was awarded the Villa Massimo stipend in Rome. His theatre buildings have been awarded the Staatpreise of Thuringia and Saxony, for example, as well as won various architecture prizes.

Architecture as a social art form Next to cultural buildings, Jörg Friedrich and his team develop universities, schools, hospitals, museums and residential buildings in Germany and Europe. Here, the team also focuses on innovative ideas: for instance, low-cost living projects for city centres that can help to solve the problem of affordable living spaces in the centre of metropoles. From very early on in the situation, Jörg Friedrich has also been working on a solution for problems created by the refugee crisis that has been ongoing since 2016: floating islands for refugees experiment with simple and affordable solutions.

The refugees islands are built from recycled materials from the Mediterranean Sea that can be turned into valuable raw materials for necessary and innovative living spaces.

“We are most proud of our cultural projects in which we work together with artists and musicians to develop new and experimental concert halls,” says Friedrich. One example is ‘resonanzraum hamburg’. The projects aims to rejuvenate an old bunker from the Second World War by using it as a concert and theatre space – a memorial against war and an example of new lowcost concert halls. A young generation of artists has the chance to use music and the city’s history in a unique concept and turn it into an architectural and artistic experience – embodying a new cultural approach in an urban context.

Das pfp-Team entwirft Low-Cost-Wohnprojekte für Stadtzentren, um das Problem bezahlbaren Wohnraums in teuren Metropolen architektonisch lösen zu helfen. Jörg Friedrich arbeitete bereits früh daran, mit seinen Entwürfen Antworten auf die seit 2016 anhaltende Flüchtlingskrise im Mittelmeer zu finden: Schwimmende Flüchtlingsinseln experimentieren mit einfach zu bauenden und bezahlbaren Lösungen. Die ‚Refugees Islands‘ werden mit aus dem Meer recycelten Baustoffen montiert, die als Material für dringend benötigten und innovativen Wohnraum dienen können.

Innovative technology transforms dangerous emissions into agricultural fertiliser The Swiss start-up Daphne Technology is developing a unique new exhaust cleaning system for the marine industry, which faces tighter emission regulations from 2020.

The SulPure technology removes sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide from engine exhaust gas, using a three-step system, including a patented nanotechnology. The company is currently building a prototype.

In particular, sulphur oxide is a huge problem for the environment when blown into the air without any filters. It can, for example, cause acid rain, environmental and health issues, especially close to important shipping lines. Recent years, therefore, have seen a large shift in regulations, intending to cut sulphur in exhaust gases. Low emission zones were established in 2015, and in 2020, sulphur emissions worldwide will have to be reduced to 0.5 per cent from the current 3.5 per cent. That is why many shipping companies will have to invest in new filters for their merchant fleets.

Currently used technologies, so called wet scrubbers, are showering the exhaust with sea water to wash out sulphur oxides from the fumes. Sulphur oxides are washed out together with an uncontrolled amount of heavy metals and a diverse set of hydrocarbons. This poisonous

cocktail has a direct negative (lethal) effect on aquatic life.

“We have a completely new approach,” says Daphne Technology co-founder and CMO Björn Asplind. “We have no discharge into the sea. In our process, the first step is a filter, which removes particles.” The more exciting part is the second step: Daphne Technology’s patented nanotechnology enhances an electric field between two electrodes. “This creates an electron field with free electrons,” explains Asplind. Simply speaking, these electrons hit other molecules when the gases pass through. “It makes them want to transform, want to attach themselves to something else.”That way, sulphur oxide is turned into sulphuric acid. In a third step, urea is added to neutralise the acidic gases and form solid particles. “These particles can be collected and used as agricultural fertiliser,” says Björn Asplind.

“We thereby turn a pollutant into something useful.”

Daphne Technology, an EPFL cleantech spin-off, is based in Lausanne, and has opened a branch in Sweden where the team focuses on developing the company’s innovative technology. Currently ten employees and various contractors and consultants are working on the prototype.

A Swiss start-up develops technology to optimise cancer treatment While today’s medical procedures can successfully determine cancer types and treatment plans, this process can still at times be ineffective and takes a long time in practice. The Swiss start-up ARTIDIS AG, however, has now developed a nanomechanical sensor that has the opportunity to revolutionise cancer diagnosis and treatment. Clinical trials in Europe and the US are starting in spring.

Cancer is a global problem and its diagnosis can be terrifying and stressful for patients, especially since it often takes several days and multiple visits until doctors can finally tell patients with certainty if they do indeed have cancer. That makes a quick and effective diagnosis so important, says Marija Plodinec, CEO at ARTIDIS AG. The company has developed a new diagnosis tool that combines the analysis of certain biomarkers and physical properties of tissue with that of personal data.

Nanomechanical sensors can differentiate between benign and malign tissue in under three hours, making the diagnosis more effective and quick.

Predicting if a cancer will build metastases “We are looking at the stiffness of a tumour, which is important, because it tells 90 | Issue 84 | March 2020

us if a tumour is actually able to spread,” says Plodinec. Only very soft cells can squeeze through surrounding altered tissue and build life-threatening metastases in other parts of the body. An AI-powered algorithm combines the according biomarker with hundreds of relevant data points and the patient’s own clinical data, which will help doctors make individually tailored treatment plans. “I like to compare it with a cockpit: it is like an autopilot that helps to guide the process, even though at some point a person has to take over to make the final decisions,” says Plodinec.

Marija Plodinec first had this idea in 2008 when working on her PhD: even though the basic technology necessary to measure tissue stiffness was already developed in the 1980s, ARTIDIS was the first to use

it in a clinical context within a clinical study including more than 500 patients, which was recently successfully completed in Switzerland. The company, which today has 15 employees in Switzerland and more than 40 co-workers worldwide, is initially focusing on breast cancer. But this is only the starting point, as it can be used for other cancer types and other medical fields, as well. In 2019, ARTIDIS was one of 16 start-ups selected from 140 competing healthcare companies worldwide and became part of the renowned Texas Medical Centre. Schweizer Start-up entwickelt Technologie zur Optimierung der Krebsbehandlung Auch wenn heutige medizinische Behandlungsmethoden die Art einer Krebserkrankung erfolgreich bestimmen können, ist der Prozess oft ineffektiv und dauert lange. Das Schweizer Start-up ARTIDIS AG hat einen nanomechanischen Sensor entwickelt, der die Diagnose und Behandlung von Krebs revolutionieren kann. Klinische Studien in Europa und den USA starten im Frühling.

Krebs ist ein weltweites Problem, die Diagnose für Patienten angsteinflößend und stressig, insbesondere weil es häufig mehrere Tage und mehrere Besuche beim Arzt bedarf, bevor Patienten mit Sicherheit erfahren, ob sie eine Krebserkrankung haben. Das macht eine schnelle und effektive Diagnose so wichtig, sagt Marija Plodinec, CEO der ARTIDIS AG. Das Unternehmen hat ein neues Diagnose-Tool entwickelt, das einen spezifischen Biomarker und physikalische Eigenschaften von Gewebe mit persönlichen Daten kombiniert. Nanomechanische Sensoren können in unter drei Stunden zwischen gutartigem und bösartigem Gewebe unterscheiden und machen so die Diagnose effektiv und schnell.

Nur sehr weiche Zellen können sich durch das sie umgebende, veränderte Gewebe quetschen und so lebensbedrohliche Metastasen in anderen Teilen des Körpers bilden. Ein von künstlicher Intelligenz gesteuerter Algorithmus kombiniert den entsprechenden Biomarker mit hunderten relevanten Datenpunkten und Patientendaten, was es Ärzten ermöglicht, einen maßgeschneiderten Behandlungsplan zu erstellen. „Ich vergleiche das gerne mit einem Cockpit: Es ist wie ein Autopilot, der hilft, den Prozess zu steuern; an einem bestimmten Punkt muss der Mensch dann aber übernehmen und die finale Entscheidung treffen“, sagt Plodinec.

Marija Plodinec hatte diese Idee erstmals 2008, als sie an ihrer Doktorarbeit arbeitete.

Die grundlegende Technologie, um die Steifheit von Gewebe zu messen, existiert bereits seit den 1980ern – ARTIDIS waren aber die ersten, die sie im klinischen Kontext nutzten. Eine klinische Studie mit mehr als 500 Teilnehmern wurde jüngst erfolgreich in der Schweiz abgeschlossen. Das Unternehmen mit seinen 15 Mitarbeitern in der Schweiz und mehr als 40 Mitarbeitern weltweit fokussiert zunächst auf Brustkrebs. Aber dies ist nur der Startpunkt, da ihre Plattform auch für eine Vielzahl anderer Krebsarten und medizinischer Bereiche genutzt werden kann. 2019 war ARTIDIS eines von 16 Start-ups, das aus 140 internationalen Wettbewerbern ausgewählt wurde, um Teil des bekannten Texas Medical Centre zu werden.

ARTIDIS startet im Frühling mit weiteren klinischen Studien und hofft, Anfang 2021 in Europa und Ende 2021 in den USA eine Zulassung zu erhalten.

Nach einem ergänzenden Studium als Business-Coach und Firmengründung 2016 haben sie sich ganz bewusst auf die Bereiche ‚Mindful Leadership‘ und ‚New Work‘ fokussiert.

Erfolgreiches Verkaufen ist eine Kunstform. Jeder kennt mindestens einen unsympathischen Verkäufer, der ein Verkaufsgespräch gefühlt stundenlang in die Länge zieht oder aufgesetzt freundlich wirkt. Manch einer hat vielleicht sogar noch nie einen guten Verkäufer getroffen. „Das ist gar nicht mal so unwahrscheinlich“, sagt Thomas Sajdak. „Denn den wirklich erfolgreichen Verkäufer erkennt man daran, dass er überhaupt nicht dem gängigen Klischee des Verkäufers entspricht.“ In der Tat muss jede Leistung, jede Idee oder wissenschaftliche These irgendwann und irgendwo verkauft oder schmackhaft gemacht werden. „Verkaufen ist die wichtigste Interaktion unseres Planeten“, sagt Sajdak. Das beginnt bereits innerhalb des Unternehmens: „Das Überzeugen des Chefs von der Bedeutung des neuen 96 | Issue 84 | March 2020

Projektes; die diplomatische Regelung von Meinungsverschiedenheiten im Team, die Bewerbung um eine spannende, neue Position; selbst das Überzeugen des Lebenspartners vom nächsten Urlaubsort.“ Aushandeln und Verhandeln ist somit tief in den sozialen Strukturen menschlichen Zusammenlebens verankert, dennoch geht niemand gezielt auf die Suche nach einem Verkäufer. „Mir fällt kein Mensch ein, der morgens aufsteht und sich wünscht: Heute würde ich gerne mal wieder einem netten Verkäufer begegnen, der mir eine neue Kreditkarte verkauft.“ Bei der Idee des ‚Shoppens‘ sieht das schon wieder ganz anders aus: Für viele ist das eine Freizeitbeschäftigung. „Wir Menschen entscheiden am liebsten selbst und vermeintlich frei“, sagt Sajdak. „NichtVerkäufer sind daher oft die viel besseren Verkäufer, da sie nicht diesen subtilen

Druck auf Kunden ausüben beziehungsweise sie ungeschickt überreden.“ Ein Ziel zu haben, ist dabei wichtig. „Und dieses Ziel ist der Kundenschwarm-Effekt.

Hier ist das Ziel, so gut, so freundlich und für Kunden so nützlich zu sein, dass sie von ganz alleine auf die Idee kommen, einen weiterzuempfehlen.“ Dem Team um Thomas Sajdak geht es daher neben Strategien oder rhetorische Dimensionen vor allem um das richtige Mindset. Im Wettbewerb um die besten Plätze liegt das Team vorne, das bis zum Letzten kämpft, sagt der Experte.

das Spiel noch lange nicht entschieden. Das Spiel gewinnt, wer bis zum Ende an sich glaubt. „Profisportler denken anders“, sagt Andreas Klement „Und wer anders denkt, wird anders handeln und anders wirken.“ Darin liegt ihr Erfolg und mit dem richtigen Training lässt sich ihre Art zu Denken auch auf Teams und Leadership in Unternehmen übertragen.

Bandenwerbung, VIP-Logen oder beim Trikot-Sponsoring. „Manche Unternehmen haben sogar Rechte an einzelnen Spielern erworben“, sagt Klement. „Einige Unternehmen haben ganze Vereine übernommen.“ VfL Wolfsburg und Red Bull Leipzig sind hier nur zwei Beispiele. „Andererseits ist jedoch den meisten Unternehmen nicht klar, was sie sich selbst vom Profisport abschauen können. das ist nicht wenig.“ Manchmal macht es beispielsweise Sinn Top-Performer durch mittelmäßig begabte Spieler zu ersetzen und Führungskräfte müssen selbst eine ordentliche Fehlerkultur vorleben – all das thematisiert Andreas Klement in seinem Buch Leadership meets Sports und den entsprechenden Vorträgen und Seminaren. Er bringt dabei auch Erfahrungen ein, die er im Coaching von Profisportlern gewonnen hat: „Ich coache Profisportler, die sich während ihrer aktiven Laufbahn die Frage stellen, wie die Karriere nach der Karriere aussieht.“

Bildfläche verschwindet, weil die Spieler mit der neuen Dynamik des Spiels nicht zurecht kommen. Ganz ähnlich ist das in der Wirtschaftswelt: Moderne Märkte sind schnell, komplex, ambivalent, unsicher und oft volatil. Und darauf müssen sich Führungskräfte einstellen können.

Das berühmte ‚Survival of the fittest‘ meint dabei nicht, dass immer der Stärkste siegt, vielmehr gewinnt derjenige, der sich am besten an widrige Umstände angepasst hat. Gewinner haben neue Erfolgsfaktoren angenommen und sich weiterentwickelt.

Siegen und Verlieren ist eine Frage der Perspektive

Und genau hier setzt ein anderer Aspekt von Andreas Klements Arbeit an: nicht nur die Einstellung zu ändern, sondern konkret auf Veränderungen in der Wirtschaft vorzubereiten. Der Coach macht Führungskräfte und Teams resilient und flexibel gegenüber einschneidenden Veränderungen – und den Erfolg damit zukunftsfähig. Eine Vision, Verständnis, Klarheit und Anpassungsfähigkeit nennt Klement als entscheidende Faktoren.

Seine Antwort: „Nur das Ergebnis muss sich ändern, dann ist alles wieder in Ordnung.“ Und genau das versucht Andreas Klement auch seinen Klienten zu vermitteln: Motivation und der Sieg über Selbstzweifel nach einer Niederlage sind der Schlüssel. Immerhin gewann Liverpool das Rückspiel 4:0.

What price the truth?

The Germans have a proverb which says ‘Was ich nicht weiß, macht mich nicht heiß’, which can loosely be translated as ‘what I do not know, does not bother me’. This appears to be the government’s new approach to press freedom. Just in case you think I am exaggerating, what happened on 3 February 2020 prompted Andrew Gricc from The Independent to say that “I’ve spent 40 years reporting from Westminster. I’ve never seen anything like this before”. So is press freedom really at risk in the UK? To explain what I am on about, we need to take a step back and look at what is known as the parliamentary press lobby, so called after an area in the Houses of Parliament where, (give or take) since Victorian times, daily, Sunday and local newspapers, news channels, news agencies, and representatives of the international press received twice-daily briefings from government spokespeople and civil servants about new legislation and other government and parliamentary business. The arrangement has in the past (not without justification) been criticised as a bit of a cosy club but, by and large, it worked, and was better than no access for the press, or access only on the government’s terms.

The prequel to this episode started in January 2020, when the government suddenly changed the location of these briefings (without consultation) from the Houses of Parliament to No 9 Downing Street. Big deal? Yes, actually, because it meant that, for the first time in history, lobby journalists had to ask permission from the government to gain access and attend these briefings, rather than being able to be there and ask questions simply on the back of having a press pass.

Fears that the new system would allow the government to refuse access to unhelpful journalists who happened not to do its bidding promptly turned out to be well founded on 3 February 2020, when Downing Street attempted to ban selected journalists from The Independent, The i, The Mirror, HuffPost, and others, from a press briefing on the UK’s future relationship with the EU on the grounds that they had not been invited. In a move that stands to their credit, those journalists who had been invited, walked out en masse in protest at the attempt to exclude their colleagues and the briefing then did not take place. This all followed hot on the heels of the controversial decision by the government to dodge scrutiny by recording and releasing the Prime Minister’s 31 January Brexit Day address directly to video, rather than to allow broadcast media to film it, as would have been standard practice.

Is it just me, or is this remarkably resonant of the Trump administration’s campaign of intimidation against the ‘mainstream media’ and the scrapping of daily White House press briefings? Boris and his team have clearly been learning from the best. There is a bit of a wider context to this in the UK, where the current government has been regarding the press and its annoyingly critical questions and reporting as a bit of a nuisance for some time: a Mirror reporter had been banned from the Conservative election campaign bus, Channel 4 was threatened with a review of its public service remit, the government has banned ministers from appearing on the BBC’s flagship Today programme, and the BBC now faces a wholesale review that may well see its funding through the licence fee withdrawn and its services broken up.

Reporters without Border (RSF), the organisation which publishes the annual World Press Freedom Index, shares the view that life is becoming a bit difficult in the UK for journalists whose job it should be to ask questions and hold the government to account: it ranked the UK 33rd out of 180 countries, one of the worst-performing in Western Europe.

So what is the conclusion? The Germans have a proverb for that as well: ‘Wehret den Anfaengen’, ‘fight it before it becomes a danger’. A free press is the beating heart of a functioning democracy. We should all defend it.

To the unsuspecting onlooker, Gilbert and George appear to be just a couple of elderly gentlemen. Kitted out in threepiece tweed suits, they could pass as two well-dressed grandparents.

Nothing strange or remarkable about them, you might think.

Well, not quite. These two genteel fellows have been living their entire lives as an artwork together for the past 50 years, along the way creating some of the most raucous, provocative and shocking art imaginable. And the tweed suits?

They wear nothing else. Now, these venerable ‘enfants terribles’ are being honoured with a bumper retrospective at Kunsthalle Zurich, entitled THE GREAT EXHIBITION, 1971 – 2016.

The title of the exhibition is a small insight into the world of Gilbert and George.

They are artists who deliberately challenge the stereotypes of the art world and who thrive on pushing the boundaries of it, too (as well as sometimes taking giant leaps across that boundary and having a party on the other side).

Whilst their artwork is instantly recognisable with its graphic black outline, clashing colours and advertising aesthetic – what they make work about is much more varied. They delve into death, hope, life, fear, sex, money, race and religion.

Conscious that these subjects are complex, and occasionally considered taboo, Gilbert and George’s work takes a direct and unflinching approach that can (and often does) shock the viewer.

But you must not simply write them off as mere shock artists (although that might be what they want): Gilbert and George seek to “bring out the bigot from inside the liberal and conversely to bring out the liberal inside the bigot”. They want to open eyes to the world around us, making us see it in all its joyous and disturbing glory. Whilst that might not be what we want, it might well be what we need…

Ever heard of the ‘Anglicism of the Year’?

No? Well, you have now. And let me enlighten you even further: the German ‘Anglizismus des Jahres’ initiative was launched in 2010 by Prof. Dr. Anatol Stefanowitsch, a linguist at Freie Universität Berlin who also acts as the head of an expert jury choosing Germany’s anglicism of the year. For all native English speakers, the whole thing does, of course, not make any sense. However, it definitely does from a German perspective, because no language influences German vocabulary the way English does. More and more English words creep in all the time and often, they are re-appropriated in a German way, i.e. native English speakers would not understand them in the context they are used in Germany.

According to the Anglizismus des Jahres crew, English as the global lingua franca currently plays a key role as a ‘donor language’ for all major languages. Great German term here – ‘Gebersprache’ – a language that gives its vocabulary away.

They go on to say that their independent initiative has since 2010 been “honouring the positive contribution English has made to the development of German vocabulary”. Lovely, isn’t it? Using a word of another ‘Gebersprache’ that has left its mark on German, I’m not entirely ‘d’accord’ with this positive contribution thing. Not because I have a problem with English words being used in German, not at all. It is sometimes just the way they are used that I find, as a language and 106 | Issue 84 | March 2020

writing person, slightly toe curling. Take the first anglicism of the year from 2010; ‘leaken’. Here, we have the English infinitive ‘to leak’, which has been turned into a German infinitive with the en-ending for the integration of the word into German.

Not to talk of all the other inflections then needed to make it work with German grammar, such as ‘geleakt’ (leaked). Can’t help it, somehow it annoys the hell out of me and just sounds – wrong.

Ok, moving on from my tendency sometimes towards language policewomanship and onto the 2020 anglicism of the year, which is a really interesting one, I find: the jury chose ‘… for future’, because of its key importance for the climate protection movement and for its ‘creative diffusion’. ‘… for future’, or ‘… für die Zukunft’ in German, is a ‘Phraseoschablone’ (no, me neither and couldn’t find an English word for it), which is a figure of speech with a blank space in which different words can be inserted, and this particular one is now being used in Germany in ways that go beyond the original Greta Thunberg coined ‘Fridays of Future’.

Upon announcing the decision, jury boss Anatol Stefanowitsch said something about the English language which I find to be very true: “The fact that a native speaker of Swedish has coined an English slogan that is then taken up around the world and used as a template for creating names for climate change move-

ment to the extent that in German, it has become a general term for expressing climate-conscious behaviour, shows that the English language has long stopped belonging only to the countries where English has traditionally been spoken, but that it now belongs to all of us.” Indeed, a language can belong to anyone, across every border. And given the ever-increasing amount of ‘Englishness’ in everyday German language, it somehow seems that Germans are particularly keen on exercising this ownership.
