Summative Assessment and Submission Procedures

What is summative assessment?

Summative assessment is the final assignment submitted by learners for each module. It summarises what a student has achieved at the end of a study period for a module or unit. This assessment determines that students have reached an appropriate level of performance and indicates how well they have met the assessment criteria designed to evaluate the intended learning outcomes of a module/unit. The summative assessment feedback may include new comments not given in the earlier formative assessment for the unit.

Guidelines for the summative assessment submission

To ensure the best possible outcome for your assignment, please follow these guidelines:

1. Make sure you have carefully reviewed the formative assessment feedback provided by your tutor and have made the necessary amendments based on their suggestions.

2. Ensure that you have addressed all the assessment criteria thoroughly.

3. Be aware that your final submission will be checked for potential plagiarism and the misuse of AI tools. If your assignment exceeds the maximum allowable plagiarism threshold of 15%, you will receive a report detailing the issues if you don't have access to our plagiarism software. If you have access to our plagiarism software, you can generate the report on your own. Once you get the report, you will have the opportunity to amend your assignment. Please note the plagiarism report will be issued only once, so make sure to revise your assignment accordingly if necessary.

4. Review our plagiarism and academic malpractice policies, which are available in the Learning Portal, to understand the consequences of these issues.

5. You must sign the Statement of Authenticity form, which can be downloaded from our learning portal, MyLearnDirect.

6. Upload your completed assignment, along with the plagiarism report and the signed Statement of Authenticity form, to the MyLearnDirect portal.

7. The typical turnaround time for results is 4-5 weeks; we strive to complete the assessment and provide results within this timeframe.

8. If you receive a grade 'Refer' or 'Fail' for a unit, you will be granted another opportunity to review, revise, and resubmit your assignment for a second assessment. Please note that this process is subject to a resubmission fee. It is essential to carefully review the feedback provided to identify the weaknesses and flaws in your original submission. This feedback will highlight the assessment criteria or tasks that you did not meet, helping you understand what changes are necessary to fulfil the assignment's requirements.

Statement of Authenticity

A statement of authenticity is a document, often a declaration or certificate, that confirms the legitimacy and originality of a work, item, or document. It verifies that something is genuine and not a fake or imitation, assuring its value and provenance. You must sign a statement of authenticity for each unit and submit it along with your completed assignment.

Plagiarism, AI Usage and Plagiarism Detection Software.

Plagiarism is the act of using another person's work or ideas without giving proper credit. This could involve copying text verbatim, paraphrasing without attribution, or using ideas without acknowledging the source. Plagiarism is a serious violation of academic and professional integrity and can lead to significant consequences.

Moreover, students are prohibited from using AI tools for writing assignments. It is crucial for learners to understand the potential repercussions of failing to adhere to these policies. For more information, please refer to our plagiarism policy available in your account dashboard under the 'Policies' section.

At SBTL, we use advanced plagiarism detection software to identify instances of plagiarism and AI usage. For most of our courses, we provide learners with access to this software, enabling them to generate reports independently and make any necessary corrections. However, for some courses, we internally check for plagiarism and send a report to the learners if the threshold exceeds the allowed percentage. Please note that learners are only allowed to generate or receive reports once per unit.

To register to our plagiarism software and log in, kindly click the link below, provide your email address, and create a password. We will be notified once you successfully upload your assignment to the plagiarism software.
