Formative Assessment and Submission Procedures
This help desk article provides an overview of formative assessments and the procedures for submission.
What is formative assessment?
Formative assessment is an essential part of the learning journey, encompassing a variety of both formal and informal methods that we use throughout the teaching process. These assessments play a vital role in shaping and enhancing the learning experience, ultimately aimed at boosting student achievement. With a developmental focus, formative assessments empower students by providing constructive feedback on their performance, along with clear guidance on how they can improve or maintain their progress. Instead of emphasising mere scores or grades, these assessments delve deeper into performance details and content, providing valuable qualitative feedback that enhances the learning experience. In essence, formative assessment is all about fostering growth and helping students thrive in their learning journey.
Benefits of formative assessment
Guides Instruction: By identifying specific areas where you need improvements and support, tutors can tailor their instruction to address your learning needs effectively.
Boosts Engagement: Formative assessments empower you to take an active role in your learning journey by getting timely feedback on your progress, which inspires motivation and accountability.
Fosters a Growth Mindset: Formative assessments encourage you to view learning as an ongoing process, promoting resilience and a positive attitude toward improvement.
Guidelines for formative assessment
Please note that your assignment must be complete and cover all the assessment criteria specified in the assignment brief.
It is essential to ensure that your assignment follows the prescribed structure. Assignments that do not adhere to this structure will be returned to you. Please familiarise yourself with the assignment structure before beginning your work.
A finalised assignment means that you have completed all the tasks outlined in the assignment brief and compiled them into a Word document. Be sure to address all the assessment criteria, as drafts or incomplete work will not be accepted for formative assessment.
How do you submit formative assessments?
To support your academic journey, you are required to submit a formative assessment for each unit. This practice not only allows you to receive detailed feedback aligned with established marking criteria for the unit but also plays a pivotal role in your learning process. While any marks given are indicative and do not impact your final grade, the feedback serves as a valuable tool for your growth. By engaging with this "feedback for learning," you can gain insights into your strengths and identify areas where you can improve. Taking advantage of this feedback throughout the unit will empower you to deepen your understanding and enhance your overall academic performance.
