Waipara camp Te-Awa 2022

At school we got into our car groups and drove all the way to Waipara. When we first got to Waipara Camp we got into our cabin groups and went to our cabins. About an hour later we went into our day groups. Everyone had about 8-10 people in the groups. The activities were Water slide, faulty towers, Archery, flying kiwi, giant swing, orienteering. Our cook was called Sue and she was so nice that sometimes she would let kids serve the toast or even have seconds of dessert if the teachers say.

Clarrie Light

Clarrie Light is the best music teacher in the world (no I'm not biased at all). It is such a privilege being taught by him and an even bigger privilege being able to interview him. Here is just some insight into Clarrie’s very interesting life.

Q1. “What originally got you started with music”?

A1. “Well originally I was going to be an architect. But I had always liked music and when I went to university and one of my friends' brothers played guitar beautifully, that's when I changed direction to music”

“ From there I studied for about three months and then my teacher asked me to teach for her. Mind you it took a fair bit of practice 3-5 hours a day was common Then I thought well okay I want a career in teaching music and I want to study psychology to help me teach. I studied through Berklee College of Music and my skills grew like that”.

Q2. “ Did you play in any bands”?

A2. “I played with Rod Derek in the 99 club. Those were some good times. I had a lot of fun”. I did do a few of my own bands as well”.

Q3. “Was the Clarrie Light Combo your band”?

A3 “Yes and I did a few trio bands as well”

Q4. “ Did you write a song with Sandy Snowden”.

A4 “Yeah I wrote quite a few tunes with her”

Q5. “Have you ever met any famous musicians”?

A5. “Oh heck yes I used to meet all the entertainers that used to come through”

Q5. “Who were they”?

A5. “ B.B king borrowed my organ when he was here for his last time. I also met the Everly Brothers and the Kingston Trio”

Q6. “ Did you meet the Beatles”?

A6 “No I didn't, although my studio was opposite where they were playing and when they were playing you couldn’t hear a thing. I also met the Shadows and Cliff Richards way back in the day.

Q7. “ Do you have a favourite guitar”?

A7. “I have a lovely Maton guitar. It was model number 19. An Australian fellow named Bill May made them. Tommy Emmanuel plays Matons. I've met Tommy on three occasions.”

Q8. “Wow what's he like”?

A8. He's a hell of a nice guy

Q9. “Who's your favourite guitarist” ?

10

A9. “ Theres alot of them, a lot of great players Joe pass comes to mind he’d be number one a lot of people haven’t heard of him I think you have by accident though”.

“Joe Pass is so good he's into jazz. I like jazz. I like all styles but Joe Pass is so good”.

Q10. “What do you love about music the most”?

A10. “Well everything music has got so much colour. A world without music would be far greyer than a world without colour. There's just so much expression in music it's so good.”

Q11 “What genre of music do you like the most”?

A11. “It's all good, people say well I play country music or I play classical or I play this and that but it all has its place.”

Q12 “What is your favourite song?”

A12. “ That's a tough one. There's a difference between a song and a tune when you say a song you normally think of words when you hear a tune you hear a melody so when you hear a song sung in a different language you hear the voice as an instrument.”

“So do you believe that if you can hear the words as a melody you can decide whether a song is good or not”?

“Well the words tell a story and if you listen to a song you hear the story and the words can mean something to you the melody is sort of semi incidental but if there's no words you ' re listening to the melody.”

Q13 “What instruments can you play”?

A13. “Several, guitars lovely because its a solo instrument with such a range. Drums are good if you want to bash out harmonicas, mandolins are good, the bouzouki is good, it's a greek instrument, the sitar is an Indian instrument and the balalaika is a Russian instrument”.

“So you play a lot of instruments?”

“Well yeah I only dabbled with things like the bouzouki ” .

Q14. “What was your most rewarding thing as a teacher or a musician”.

A14. “With teaching, what I've found is it's not about how well the pupil does, it's about music being the vessel that they will develop themselves and that is so important if you ' re only going to teach the people that are brilliant you’d have to have a day job”

Q15. “What do you think is the most memorable moment of your life thus far”?

A15. “Music wise it's playing to your kids when they’re small nursery rhymes and things like that you know.”

Q16. “What impression would you like to leave on all of your students”?

A16. “I just want them to work hard with most of them. It's further down the track when they realise oh he did know what he was talking about.”

Dunedin Camp

In term three the year 7 & 8 students went to Dunedin for their school camp. This was a fantastic opportunity for Aoraki to learn lots of really cool history, especially Larnach castle. Where we got to compare an old castle with a modern castle ‘ Riverstone’ it was very interesting to see what an old castle’s purpose was and a modern castle's purpose. We had an amazing time at Moana pools, late at night. We spent most of our time going down the hydroslides. We got lots of actuation photos with really cool facial expressions. We got to learn heaps of stuff at the museum where we got to go into the butterfly enclosure and the Planetarium, as well as learning about climate change through science. We got to have an amazing experience on the Monarch cruise where one of the groups were lucky enough to see a whale and the time that we went was the nesting season of the albatross where we got to see some of the chicks first flight. We all had a blast and have all made lots of memoirs from this school camp that we are going to remember forever.

Barn Dance

This term, our school organised a barn dance which was heaps of fun. Every learning area featured a dance, and some even featured two. We all practised for around 3-4 weeks in buildup. On the day (Wednesday 9th of November) we all came to school dressed up in our checkered shirts and overalls, ready to show off our groovy moves to the parents and family.

The dance was held in the school hall, and it was decorated with hay bails and some other stuff you could find in a barn. It was in the aernoon, and it was open for anyone to come. This year, we had a big show of people with two whole bleachers full plus a number of seats. Aer we entered the hall and everyone took their seats, Kapa Haka was announced and performed for us. They showed off their skills at poi, sang two songs and did an impactful haka. It was an overall amazing performance, and we even got to see the Kapa Haka crew in their stylish new uniforms.

As for the dances, Teoteo went first with their adorable hamster dance that everyone fawned over. Next Ngā Manu Nui went. They aimed high, and decided they wanted to do an extra dance. First there was the Boot-scootin boogie which made everyone chuckle, and then there was the classic Cotton Eye Joe. Aer that, Te Awa presented their fast-paced hip-hop routine of the Hoedown Throwdown by Hannah Montana that everyone was impressed with. Then, Ngahere showed everyone their capability at dancing with their two dances called the Gitup and the Electric Slide. Last, but not least, we had our senior class, Aoraki perform their traditional-style barn dance for us. Aer that, our amazing Year 6 announcers gave us permission to leave, and our school day finished.

Why we should take school sports equipment home

Why would taking your school's sports equipment home be a good idea? (with teachers permission)....I'm going to tell you why we should be able to take stuff home out of the sports shed. Firstly because: you would have to sign in and out when you get something out and some kids' homes don't have enough money to buy their kids a bouncy ball.

Secondly: Like I said people don't have enough money to buy one ball and if you think oh it's just a ball NO it's not just a ball. We don't want people to just be living inside all their life. They need to go outside and get fresh air and vitamin D from the sun. And lastly: If you think they will get stolen we will plant security cameras and tell the students that if you steal you will not be able to get anything out for a whole month or week and the same if you don't return . it will depend on how bad it is though. I have discussed in my main three points that is stolen if the equipment got stolen we will install cameras, that children's parents dont have the money to buy sports equipment and lastly that you have to sign in and out so the sports equipment wont get stolen and they won't be able to get anything out for a while. I hope I have convinced you to let us get some sports equipment out from the sports shed to take home.

Snakes are the worstpets

When it comes to pets, snakes are no doubt the worst ones and here's why … Snakes are vicious, unforgiving and cruel and they actually lack the part of the brain that feels love. Snakes can shed their skin meaning that if you own a pet snake you will have to clean their cage multiple times leading to several bites. Snakes are weak to the cold meaning that if you turn your aircon on it will not be happy. In conclusion: your snake will not love you, will make a mess, and hates the cold.

Littering sucks!

I don't think that people should litter. Did you know at least 100,000 marine mammals die every year from plastic in their habitat? 1,000 of them are turtles. Sad, right? So today I will talk about whyI don't think people should litter.

If we don't stop littering the world will die. Litter can be harmful to people, animals and the natural environment as it can threaten their existence and evolution

Litter from food and drinks can even increase the chance of animal attacks.

Littering can be expensive to clean up so then we won’t have enough money to build buildings.

Littering affects farming so there won’t be any crops and then we won’t have any food because it poisons the soil.

So today I talked to you about littering and why I think we shouldn’t litter.

We should choose what days we come to school

By choosing what days to go to school you can be less distracted, more comfortable and take breaks. So today I am here to talk to you about choosing what days to go to school.

By choosing what days to go to school, the days that kids don’t go to school kids have to do an hour of work from home so kids still have to do some school work.

Kids will be less distracted because they can make a distraction free learning space at home and be less distracted by other children.

Kids will also get less tired by being able to take breaks whenever they want.

So today I have come to the conclusion that kids get less tired by choosing what days to go to school.
