Buddy Classes
By Bella James
In 2024 we started doing buddy classes instead of Hauora Ropu. In buddy classes we have each whanau from a different learning space combined with another whanau from a different learning space. In buddy classes we all do different activities like games and scavenger hunts. My favorite thing to do in buddy classes was play games, my buddy and I played Jenga and Guess Who. For my buddy class we had Mrs Marsh’s whanau (from Te Awa) combined with Mrs Barr’s whanau (from Ngā Manu Nui). We all had fun together playing games and just hanging out with someone who we wouldn’t normally play with.

Aoraki’s Science Experiments:
Mentos/Coke by Eli J
Aim:
To find how high soda erupts when Mentos is added to a bottle of soda.
Hypothesis:
I think diet coke will go the highest because it has a lot of sugar.
Resources:
Mentos, measuring tape or ruler, ipad with video capability, a pen Classic Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Raspberry Coke, Sprite, Ice cream Soda, and Pepsi.
Method:
Grab your Diet Coke and then get your Mentos. Then put your Mentos in the Diet Coke and record how high it will erupt.
Once you do that you will do it again but with a different soda. You will then record that one too, and you will keep going until we have all the results.
A er recording it we will write the results in our Writing books.
Results:
Classic Coke: 42 centimeters
Diet Coke: 47 centimeters
Coke Zero: 45 centimeters
Pepsi: 34 centimeters
Ice cream Soda: 48 centimeters
Sprite: 43 centimeters
Raspberry Cola: 38 centimeters
Conclusion:
Ice cream Soda and Diet Coke were only one centimeter apart. Raspberry Coke went the 2nd lowest. I thought Diet Coke would go the highest, but it came second and Ice cream Soda went higher than any other.
I was surprised that Sprite and Coke were only one centimeter apart. I thought Zero Coke was going to go the lowest but Pepsi went the lowest instead.
If I could do the experiment again, I would do it on a hot day so they may go higher. I think that outside temperature gives an advantage.
I also noticed it didn't make any difference if they were full sugar, zero sugar or diet.
Mentos in Coke/Soda by Liam
Aim: How high does soda erupt when Mentos is added to the bottle?
Hypothesis: The Coke will go higher. I think this is the case because it's all over Youtube. So if the other ones were better they would be all over Youtube as well.
Resources: Mentos, measuring tape or ruler, ipad to video with, table/chart to record results, a pen, outside space.
Method:
1. Set up your tape measure going up a pole. Then set up the iPad on slow-mo so it's easier to measure.
2. Put a marker down where you are going to put the bottles like a hula hoop.
3. Open the Coke bottle, to do that twist it le .
4. Place it on the ground facing up right in the middle of the marker.
5. Open the mentos pack and get out a mentos, tell the person with the ipad to start videoing. Put the mentos in and step back to watch.
6. Take the bottle away and set up the next one. Keep repeating steps 5 and 6 a er you write down the results.
Results: How high did the soda go when the Mentos was added?
Classic Coke: 42 centimeters
Diet Coke: 47 centimeters
Coke Zero: 45 centimeters
Pepsi: 34 centimeters
Ice cream Soda: 48 centimeters
Sprite: 43 centimeters
Raspberry Cola: 38 centimeters
Conclusion:
Classic Coke and sprite went to similar heights with only 1 centimeter difference. The Ice cream Soda which won was just in front of the Diet Coke by one centimeter.
Pepsi did the worst, only reaching 34 centimeters.
The Raspberry Cola did how I expected it would.
Coke Zero went pretty good but it wasn't enough to win.
I noticed that it wasn't the caffeine that made it explode because the Diet was one centimeter off the Ice cream Soda and the ice cream soda doesn't have caffeine. I thought that the Classic Coke would go the highest because it's all over Youtube but maybe the Ice cream Soda is a quiet achiever. Next time I would put more Mentos in and measure from the top of the bottle to the top of the explosion because some bottles are smaller
Dr ms and Nightmares
By Mya
There are a lot of experts that don't know why dreams happen, and they also don't know where they come from. However, there is a theory that dreaming helps you analyse memories, like skills and habits, and it likely serves as a ‘rehearsal‘ for various situations that one faces during a day-to-day-life. Scientists also know much but not all of what's going on physiologically during dreams. Most dreams occur during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which we cycle though occasionally during the night. Sleep studies show our brain waves are almost as active during the day then at night.
Some people wonder what their dreams mean, so here is a list of the three most common dreams and their meaning.
1. The most common dream people have is being chased where you feel like you can't run fast or you are slowing down, this dream means that you are trying to avoid someone or something in your life that you want to escape from unwanted desires.
2. Another common dream is a dream about falling, this dream typically stems from anxiety. Lots of people think that falling dreams happen to express fear or insecurity that you feel you have no control over.
3. The third most common dream is a dream where you might be flying like a superhero. These dreams can mean that you feel powerful and free, but on the other hand it could mean that you are trying to fly away from things in your life. But not all flying dreams are bad, if you are flying alone it could mean that you feel independent.
Lucid dreams are dreams where you are able to control your actions or what happens in your dreams, these are the rarest types of dreams. If you would like to dream like this here are some tips, you will need to write down your dreams, or as much as you remember them as soon as you wake up. If writing is not your thing you could use a voice recorder to do this. Detailed recordings allow you to recognize your dreams easier once you fall asleep, which in return makes lucid dreams trigger more o en.
Surprisingly, men and women do in fact have different dream experiences, men usually dream more about aggression, anxiety, achievement and work related themes, men also have lower dream recall, compared to women. Where women usually dream about relationships. Kids have different dream experiences as well, and they dream about emotional experiences with family members and scary animals while adults dream about other adults.
Nightmares have a huge impact on sleep, and can sometimes make you wake up still afraid. Nightmares might be completely meaningless or they might mirror some real life fear or trauma. These fears are o en associated with childhood but they can still affect adults. There isn't a big chance that scientists will find a ‘cure’ to nightmares, but you can bring calming exercises into bed, such as deep breathing techniques or progressive muscle relaxation. Something else that you can try is just to try to talk about your nightmares, or you could write down your nightmares in a journal and get the dreams out of your head. (This might also help with lucid dreams as well!) If you want more techniques you could go to ‘The Clam Blag’ in the link at the bottom of the page.
As it turns out some foods can affect your dreams if you do eat them too close to your bedtime, here is a list of some of these foods:
1. Spicy foods, one person has stated that ”Their dreams are always so vividly bizarre” And according to ‘women's day’ eating lots of spicy foods can not only change your dreams but increase your chance of remembering them.
2. Dairy, according to a study done in 2015 said that the most frequent foods mentioned as causing both disturbing and bizarre dreams were linked to dairy products including cheese, milk and icecream.
3. Baked goods, according to a study, bad dreams or nightmares occurred a er the participants ate sweets like cookies and cake before bed.
Sleep apnea is a condition where your breathing constantly stops and starts during sleep, because of this, the person's brain can never fully achieve REM sleep (More on that above) because of disruptive sleep apnea, dreaming is less frequent and occurs in shorter periods. Sleep apnea can also affect what you dream, which can make disturbing nightmares due to the sleep pattern.
Scientists believe that mammals do dream, though cetaceans (whales, porpoises and dolphins) have a unique way to dream, it is unclear how much of the cetacean clade dream because these mammals never fully sleep. But they have the ability to only use one side of their brain while the other side sleeps. They need to do this because these creatures must remain conscious to breathe. Humans and other animals will never have to constantly think about breathing while they are asleep, so we are free to turn off our minds and dream. But if cataceans fully turn off their brains in order to sleep, they drown. So they have evolved to keep one eye open and half their brain awake.
Astral projection is supposedly the act of leaving your body while you are dreaming, but is it real? A survey that people have done says that about 8 to 20% of people claim to have had an out of body experience at some point in their life. It is a sensation of consciousness, spirit or ‘astral body’ leaving their physical body. Most times this occurs during sleep, but some people have claimed to have done it while they were just relaxing.
Here are some facts about dreams!
1. We don't all see in colour, around 12% of people dream in black and white!
2. Dreams are strange because the part of our brain that makes sense of things shuts down during dreaming!
3. The longer dreams that we have usually occur during morning hours!
4. Most of all our dreams are probably linked to events that have happened in the previous day or two!
5. There are about five different types of dreams!

School Swimming Sports
By Jono and Malachi
This year the swimming sports were held in term 1. We had three options to compete in for this event freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. We all gave it a try and swam our best, but if you didn’t go to Dudley for the competitive races, you had fun at school with the teachers doing kick board races.
Here is what people had to say about our swimming sports:
What was your favorite thing about the event?
James: Getting to race
Malachi: Getting to do it with my friends.
Arthur: Getting out of school.
Jono: Having fun.
Hiyori: Having fun.
Timea: Having fun.
Which event was your favorite stroke?
James: Freestyle
Timea: Freestyle
Hiyori: Freestyle and breaststroke
Arthur: Freestyle.
Jono: Backstroke.
Malachi: Freestyle.
What stroke do you think you did the best in?
Timea: Freestyle
Hiyori: Freestyle
Arthur: Backstroke.
Jono: Backstroke
Malachi: Freestyle
James: Freestyle Rakahuri, North Canterbury and Canterbury Swimming Championships
The people that qualified by swimming fast enough at the school swimming sports got to go and compete against other schools in Rakahuri Swimming Sports.
Hiyori qualified in freestyle and breaststroke, Jonathan did backstroke and breaststroke, Josh swam backstroke, Emma qualified in backstroke and Mya went for backstroke too. They all went to Dudley Pool and swam against students from other North Canterbury schools (from the Rakahuri Zone).
Jono placed second in backstroke and Hiyori came first in Freestyle and third in Backstroke. From this event, they advanced to the North Canterbury Swimming Championships which included students from all over North Canterbury. The next competition was the Canterbury Swimming Championships. Only Jonathan and Hiyori made it to the Canterbury champs, it was really fun. They gave it their all and that's all that matters.

SELF DEFENCE
By Anita
Self Defense is training to protect yourself from offenders. This is for year 7 and 8 girls. We got taught how to do air punches, high kicks and many many more. We practiced saying “Hands Off!” in a loud and clear voice, so if they were touching us inappropriately, we could tell them to stop.
We did this over two weeks, and I really enjoyed it, because we weren't just sitting there the whole time doing nothing, because we were moving a lot, and interacting with others.
I interviewed some girls about what they thought it was like: Out of ten, what do you think you would rate self defence? (Ten being the best)
Nikau: Probably a seven? We knew most of the stuff.
What did you enjoy doing?
Emma: Testing out what we learnt on other people.
Do you feel more confident about self defence now that you've learnt a bit more?
Shaylee and Navaeh: Yes. It makes me more comfortable going out in public.
Do you like punching and kicking?
Alexis: Yes. I like moving.

Head Students Easter Egg Hunt
By Abigail
Whose idea was it to do the Easter hunt? Grayson and Toby
What was your goal? Trying to raise money for the school for some great equipment
What are you fundraising for? A new climbing frame and scooter ramps

Have you got other stuff planned for the rest of the year? Yes we are also planning a disco and pancake breakfast
Do you think the Easter hunt will do well? Yeah, we hope so!
Do you think it could go wrong with the competitive kids? Possibly but instead of hiding them around the school we give everyone clues and then when they get to the end the head students are waiting to give everyone their prize

These are the Easter Baskets that were raffled off to raise more money too.

PCT Challenge
Written by Jono
The PCT challenge is a police obstacle course seat up in Cowles Stadium in Christchurch and four Aoraki students are lucky enough to participate every year.
The obstacle course is the same course that the police do to become a police officer although a few of the obstacles were taken out of the course. With the course there were also a lot of other fun activities for the students to do as well!
Some of the activities were seeing how fast you can run with a real radar speed detector! The police use them to see how fast a car is going. Another was carrying real fire gear around in teams! (The fire extinguishers probably didn’t work though)
