Matariki Breakfast 2023 By Mere & Josiah Why we celebrate Matariki We celebrate Matariki because Matariki marks the beginning of the Maori new year but Traditionally, Matariki was a time to acknowledge the dead and to release their spirits to become stars. Matariki was also a time to reflect, to be thankful to the gods for the harvest, to feast and to share the bounty of the harvest with their family and their friends. The stars name’s were Matariki, Tupuārangi, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Waitī, Tupuānuku, Ururangi, Waitā, Pōhutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi.

How Southbrook School celebrates Matariki each year Each year we celebrate Matariki by having a school breakfast this year we for breakfast we had scrambled eggs, fried bacon, BBQed sausages, baked beans or spaghetti and hash bites we had to bring our own plates and cutlery it started at 7:30 am and ended when we finished then we all got to go into our classrooms early (8:00).

Game stats: We have won 3 games, tied 1 and lost 4 Favourite games: When we played Fernside. This was our favourite because everyone played fair and it was a lot of fun. Interview: We interviewed the rugby captain Coen Robinson and here's what he had to say… “ Um, I was really disappointed that we couldn’t play the last games because the grounds flooded. The reason why I liked playing Fernside especially is because the teams were fair and they all had good sportsmanship, especially a kid named Sunny who was really nice.” Southbrook Storm Netball Team In the netball team they have Sophie, Anna, Emma, Mya, Anita, Mackenzie, Shaylee and Timea. The co-captains are Sophie and Anna. Game Stats: They have won 6 games and tied 2 and lost 1 Interview: We talked to co-captain Anna about the games we have played, this is what she had to say “we have good attacking and defending. We had a good first game because we won 23-1. Our best positions were Anna and Sophie as attack, Emma and Shaylee as centre and Mya and Mackenzie as defence. For our first game Anna said ‘it went very well. The second game went well also because we won it too. The third game wasn't the best but still pretty good, we tied. Their coach Tonya (Anna’s mum) was also very proud of the team. There were 6 players on and 6 players off. 4

They said it was very fun and they enjoyed it no matter what, even if they lost. They have very good sportsmanship and they are very good at their game. What we like about them is when they don't just go for it without talking to the team, they actually talk to the team and figure out what will work for all of them. That's what we like about them. All the players are 9 and 10 years old and are all in Te Awa. We also talked to the other captain Sophie about the games we have played. She said “we had good games and we only lost one so we were very proud of how we played. We were very happy when we won our first game by 22. We had so much fun and we will miss this awesome experience.” Favourite games: Their favourite game was when they scored 23-1. It was their favourite game because they won the game and they had good intercepts

They also liked it when they played Kaiapoi Borough because when their football team saw they were doing well, they raised the bar to get a head and win.

Aoraki Wainui Camp 2023 (By Mere and Josiah)

DAY 1 On Wednesday the 29 th March the year 7 & 8 class went on camp to the YMCA Wainui camp. We travelled there on two different buses. The trip itself took about two and a half hours but on the way we made a stop at Little River to stretch our legs. We le at about 9:30ish and got there at about midday when we got there we ate our lunch then went to unpack our bags inside our cabins. A erwards we played a whole class game, then our first activity began, which was about 30 minutes long. Then we got some free time in our cabin before a ernoon tea, then a bell rang for everyone to go into the hall for a ernoon tea. A er we went back into another 30 minute rotation. A er that finished we had about ten minutes till dinner that we could spend in our cabin or exploring the grounds. Then once our ten minutes passed we got called in for dinner which was Nachos and for dessert we had ice cream and fruit salad sponge cake. A er dinner we had 30 minutes to prepare for a good nights sleep then another 10 minutes to spend in our cabin before bed.

DAY 2 On day 2 we woke up and got ready for breakfast. For breakfast we had a choice of toast, muesli and weet-bix and other cereals. A er breakfast we got ready for our group tasks, which took us to morning tea where we were allowed to have 4 pieces of baking and 4 pieces of fruit. Then we got ready for the next task, got into our groups and started. When we finished the second task we went into the eating hall and had lunch. For lunch we had hot dogs. The optional toppings for the hot dogs were tomato sauce, mustard, BBQ sauce and onions. A er that we had our 3rd task for the day then a ernoon tea which was more fruit and baking. Finally we had our 4th task of the day and then we had 30 minutes to ourselves before then the dinner bell rang for dinner. For dinner we had chicken stir fry. A er dinner we had ice cream and apple crumble. A er dessert we washed our dishes then headed to our cabins. We had 30 minutes to get ready for bed then we all went back into the hall to listen to Mr Harding tell us a funny story about a chicken that dies. Then we had a quiz and some time to get ready for bed before lights out.

Day 3 We woke up for packing day but first we went to have breakfast which was a choice between toast, le over hot dogs, cereals, yoghurt and fruit salad. A er breakfast we packed up our cabin then we went back to the hall and got told what our activity for the day was going to be, it was orienteering. We got ready, then we came back for brief safety instructions. We got started then a er a while, we had to come back and have morning tea then went back into 8

orienteering until lunch which was made for us. For lunch we had filled rolls, a muesli bar, a packet of chips and an apple. A er lunch we played a game called diamond smugglers where we had some corn kernels and had to smuggle them back and forth to the checkpoints without getting caught by the board security (A.K.A the parents). If we got caught we had to give them one of our ‘diamonds’ or if we got scared by them we also had to give them a ‘diamond’ if you lost all of your ‘diamonds’ you had to answer a hard question like 12x12 then you would get a diamond back. Each time you made it to the checkpoint you would get a mark on your arm and you would have to do 10 jumping jacks. Whoever got the most marks on their arm meant they won. A er the game was finished we loaded our bags into the buses and le for school. Once we got back we waited for the 3pm bell then got picked up. That was the end of camp. Overall Wainui camp was pretty good. I think that it’s important to go to camps because it helps to build friendships, confidence and character and I know it helped me a lot.

Air Force Museum By Jonathan

One 21st June, Te Awa went on a trip to the Air Force Museum. At the Air Force Museum we did three rotations: a scavenger hunt, a classroom with Chris and a behind the scenes tour. When we got to the Air Force Museum we all got together and had our morning tea in our little corner. Next we had a talk with the Educator and he split us into our groups. At the start Mrs Owen's group did the scavenger hunt, next they did the behind the scenes and lastly they did the classroom with Chris. In Mrs Marsh's they group did the classroom first with Chris then they did the scavenger hunt, a er they went behind the scenes and jumped off a helicopter. Miss Tooheys group did behind the scenes first then the classroom with Chris and at the end they did the scavenger hunt . At lunch nearly the whole class played crazy tag outside on the grass. My favourite thing was getting to try on the life vest and helmet in the classroom. Also I got lucky and tried on an 80 year old Air Force outfit. At the end of the day when everyone was back at school we went home.

“My many pets” A Poem by Jonathan

I have two cats and one dog, but it would be odd to have a pet frog. I have one pony who likes to bite, I would not go against him in a fight. I have two goats. One is like you’re in a dream, But the other will just make you scream. My luck with chickens has not been great, Most of them have entered heaven's gate. But there's just one pet I hope to get and it’s a PUPPY! Oh if I get one I'll be so lucky! When you’re an only child like me, Pets become your family!
