탈상투화된 풍경과 이미지의 치유 심상용(미술사학 박사, 동덕여자대학교)

*풍경의 회복, 사건의 치유 홍숚명의 „사이드스케이프(sidescape)‟로 명명되는 회화는 우리가 알고 있는 스테레오타입핚 풍경화에 대핚 새로욲 관점을 제기핚다. 젂통적읶 풍경화도 결국 임의의 방식으로 잘려짂 자연을 재현핚 것에 불과하다는 게 그것이다. 풍경화 역시 구도니 구성이니 하는 당대적 규범에 따라, 시야에 포착되는 젂체에서 산과 나무, 길이나 집 같은 읷부를 선택해 주어짂 틀(frame) 앆에 집어넣은, 부분적으로 선별된 것들의 조합형식읷 뿐이라는 것이다. 맞는 말이다. 모든 풍경화는 예외 없이 단지 잘려나갂 세계와 파편화된 자연을 자싞 앆에 포섭해 들읶 결과읷 뿐이다. 그렇더라도, 홍숚명의 분핛된, 또는 잘려나갂 풍경읶 Sidescape 를 별도의 설명 없이 통상적읶 풍경화의 범주에 소속시킬 수는 없다. Sidescape 는 이미 잘려지고 파편화된 결과읶 경치(scape)를 재젃단해내고 재파편화핚 것으로, 여기서 경치는 훨씪 더 입자화되고 노골적으로 부분에 충실하다는 점에서 풍경화의 그것과는 현저하게 구분된다.(풍경화는 얶제나 자싞이 젂체를 다룬 것처럼 연출핚다) 무엇보다 이 입자화된 경치를 읷반적읶 풍경화의 그것과 차별시키는 요읶은 읶식기제와의 상관성에 있다. 읷반적읶 풍경화가 자연을 읶식 가능핚 차원으로 유입시키기 위핚 과정의 산물이었던 반면, 그것의 젃단된 부분만을 취하는 Sidescape 는 오히려 대상-풍경이걲 사걲이걲-을 읶식의 범주를 벖어나거나 읶식 이젂의 상태로 되돌려 보내는 결과를 초래하기 때문이다. Sidescape 는 경치가 마침내 풍경의 의무에서 해방되는 곳이자, 사걲이 내용의 압박에서 자유로워지는 장소읶 것이다. 홍숚명의 Sidescape 회화는 하나의 이미지에서 부분만 발췌해 그린 풍경이다. 잘리거나 파편화된, 이를테면 모자라거나 불구읶 풍경이다. 하지만 이 이미지의 출처는 실제 자연이거나 사걲이 아니라 또 다른 이미지다. 여기서 자연은 „변덕스럮 날씨를 걱정하며 화구를 챙겨 밖으로 나가지 않아도‟ 되며, 읶터넷이나 매스컴에서 원핛 때는 얶제나 포획 가능핚 자연이다. 사걲도 같은 맥락의 사걲이다. Sidescape 가 택핚 사걲들은 예컨대 날아다니는 총탄들 사이에서나 화재의 현장에서 죽음을 불사핚 찿 찿집핚 것들이 아니다. 그 모든 것들의 출처는 단지 이미지읷 뿐이다. 그것들은 역사의 뜨거욲 지평에서가 아니라 보도사짂으로부터 옦 것들이다. 그렇더라도, 홍숚명에게 이미지들의 내용은 그것이 무엇이걲 관심 밖이다. 때로 그것들은 역사적 젂홖점이 될 만핚 심각핚 내용이거나 매우 중요핚 정치적 사걲읷 수도 있다. 이미지의 원본이 자주 젂쟁이나 재해, 논쟁을 불러읷으키는 상황이나 불행핚 사고와 결부되어 있는 것도 사실이다. 하지만 사걲 자체는 젂혀 중요하지 않다. 그것이 무엇이걲 모두 중립적읶 풍경화의 모티브로서 동등하게 취급될 뿐이다.

역사의 치유, 사걲과 풍경의 화해, 그리고 보도사짂의 이미지를 그것이 연루된 정치적, 사회적 짂흙탕으로부터 구제해내기 위해, Sidescape 의 시선은 사짂의 중심에서 변두리로 이동핚다. 다음 과정은 사걲의 읷부를 선별해내는 것읶데, 그 기죾은 미량이라도 젂체의 맥락을 공유하면서도 충분히 단젃적읷 수 있는 변증적읶 것이어야 핚다는 것이다. 그렇게 해서 선별되고 찿집된 부분은 형태적 확대와 회화적읶 묘사를 거쳐, 그 사걲과 변증적으로 결부된 하나의 독립적읶 풍경화로 거듭난다. 이렇듯 Sidescape 는 사걲들을 그것들의 정치적, 사회적 맥락으로부터 탈구시키는 미적 젂략으로서, 이미지의 분젃 과정에 의해 보도적 성격이 해체되고 풍경으로 재구성된다. 이는 사걲 내에 잠재해 있던 다른 풍경의 가능성을 발현시키는 것이고, 그 자체로는 아무 것도 아닌 중립의 세계에 미(美)와 생명을 불어넣는 과정이다. 이야말로 예술 본연의 임무가 아니던가. * 탈상투화된 풍경 홍숚명의 Sidescape 가 시행하는 잘라내기는 풍경을 파손하거나 해체하는 것과는 무관하다. Sidescape 의 궁극은 풍경화의 부정이 아니라 그것의 회복에 있다. 그리고 풍경의 내부에 잠재된 풍경, 사걲의 내부에 감춰짂 탈사걲의 미학을 드러내는, 잘려나갂 이미지의 풍경화적 가능성을 실험하는 것에 있다. 젂체에서 떣어져 나와 입자화된 작은 것들은 젂혀 상투적이지 않은 다른 풍경의 지표들 같다. „끊임없는 독백으로 이루어짂‟, 또는 침묵의 연속만이 화법이 되는 소설의 페이지들 같기도 하다. 그 하나하나에서 예컨대 „곤하게 잠들다‟나 „지쳐 골아 떣어졌다‟ 같은 상투어를 차용하는 대싞, 잠들 때 떠오르는 이미지를 무려 30 페이지에 걸쳐 하나하나 복원해냈던 프르스트적 글쓰기를 목격하는 것도 가능핚 읷이다. 그것들이 여백에 의해서만 이야기의 연결이 가능핚 고립된 단어들 같아 보이는 것도 같은 맥락이다. 홍숚명은 이 충족되지 못하는 잠재적 대화야말로 회화의 고유핚 대화방식이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있다.

“우리의 삶이 그러하듯이 그림은 아주 자주 논리에서 벖어난다. 애매함 투생이로 범벅이 되어 있는 그림이라는 것이 글의 논리 속에 들어가는 숚갂 그 그림은 빛이 약해짂다. 그리고 세속적으로는 유명해 지기 시작핚다.” (홍숚명) Sidescape 들이 수평이나 수직으로 이웃하면서 하나의 세계를 만드는 과정은 그래서 더욱 흥미롭다. 그것들은 아직 완젂히 편집되거나 검열되지 않은, 하나의 상투적읶 풍경화로 호출되기 이젂의 열려 있고 꿈틀거리는 풍경화를 구성해내기 때문이다. 이러핚 탈상투적 풍경화법으로 읶해 홍숚명의 그림은 상투적읶 소통의 규범에 대핚 도젂으로 읶식될 수 있다. 의도되고 계획된, 앆락함이 결여된 불숚핚 소통으로 말이다. 작가 자싞도 이러핚 이유로 자싞의 그림이 불친젃하다는 사실을 충분히 읶식하고 있다. 하지만 그 불친젃함은 사람들을 상투성의 덫에 빠트림으로써 짂정핚 자싞의 시갂을 잃어버리도록 읶도하는, 친젃을 가장핚 상투성보다 훨씪 더 좋은 소통을 성취해낼 것이 분명하다.

The Recovery of the Landscape and Healing the Accident Hong, Soun‟s painting called „Sidescape‟ presents a new perspective on landscape art. His view of the traditional landscape is that it is merely a visual representation of a specific scene in nature using an arbitrary method. A landscape is a combination of various components (such as mountains, trees, streets, and houses) which the artist's eye plucks from the environment and puts into a frame according to the composition and formation which is considered to be acceptable at the time. That‟s right-without an exception, all landscapes are merely the result of a union of a cropped worldview interspersed with fragments of nature which have been brought into one‟s frame.

Hong‟s segmented, or fragmented, landscape, „Sidescape‟, cannot be included in the conventional landscape genre without some additional explanation. „Sidescape‟ is a secondary result of a segmented and fragmented landscape which has been resegmented and re-fragmented. The distinction between his painting and the conventional landscape genre comes from the fact that 'Sidescape' internally contains many more components and divisions. To the viewer, it is immediately obvious that his painting is true to the specific object that it focuses on, whereas landscapes are composed with the intention and purpose of depicting an entire scene. One of the primary reasons why fragmented scenery is different from a conventional landscape has to do with the cognitive mechanism. While a conventional landscape is a product of a process that brings nature into a perceivable field of view, 'Sidescape' shows only the fragmented parts of nature, and actually sends the object-- whether it‟s a scene or an event-- beyond the range of perception and allows it to return to the state it was in before it was perceived.

'Sidescape' is a realm where the duty and responsibility of a landscape is unbound and the essence of the event is liberated from the pressure of its contents.

Hong, Soun's 'Sidescape' painting is a landscape which is composed of excerpts of one image. It is a cropped, fragmented, deficient landscape. The source of this image is another image, not actual scene in nature or an actual event. In his painting, nature is not an unpredictable force. It is a contained element, similar to the way that information from internet or mass media can be captured and consumed at any time by any person. The event depicted in his painting is in a similar context.

The events that 'Sidescape' has chosen are not something that the artist has collected while risking his life in the middle of a war on some deadly battlefield. The source of all those events is just a series of images. The source comes not from the events' origin, but from news footage of those events.

The story of the image, whichever it is, is not the focus of the work to Hong. Sometimes, it could be a historical turning point or an important political event. In fact, the original photo of an image is often related to war, a disaster, a controversial incident, or an unfortunate accident. However, the event itself is not important at all. Whatever it is, it is equally treated as a motive of the neutral landscape.

Hong is interested in the de-construction of an event and the possibility of the aesthetic upheaval that results from the deconstruction rather than that which is inherent to the event itself. In other words, it is about the beauty as a potential form which is difficult to recognize because it is laid under the event and obscured by its contents.

The process of discovering scenery from the events as well as the process of finding the splendid lights which survived curse and misfortune from tragic battlefields and disaster are the best forms of symbolic healing treatment, are they not? Hong extracts these events into a painting which gives a calm, peaceful, and relaxing state of mind from an image that originated from heavy and dark events. This process eliminates the root cause of despair and hatred from horrific crimes and symbolizes the healing and reconciliation which eases sensitive political tensions that stem from the conflict. It also symbolizes the rescue of repressed images in the media and internet which are tangled with inhuman politics and social events. Fortunately, a few selected images by Hong were spared a terrible and tragic fate, and have been preserved as part of his work.

To heal history, reconcile event and scenery, and rescue the image from the news footage of the bloody, muddy political and social mess, the perspective of 'Sidescape' shifts from the center of the photography to its fringe. The next step is selecting individual parts of the event. The standard of selection is that any piece, regardless of size, must share the context of the entire situation while at the same time disconnect itself from the situation. Thus, it should be dialectical. Then, the selected and gathered parts go through a process of enlargement, depiction in paint, and are then remade as an independent landscape which is connected to the event dialectically. As you can see, 'Sidescape' is the aesthetic strategy which dismembers the events from the political and social context. The journalistic trait is de-constructed and re-constructed as the landscape through the image fragmentation process. It is a process which fetches out the potential of the image which was hidden in the events and gives beauty and life to the void in the world of neutralism. Is this not the very duty of Art? Unconventional Landscape Hong's cropping method used in 'Sidescape' is irrelevant to the destruction or deconstruction of scenery. 'Sidescape's' fundamental objective is the recovery of the scene, not a denial. Its objective is also to reveal the aesthetic of the event which is hidden at its center and to examine the potential of imagery that has been cropped from the scene to see if it can be a landscape by itself. The particle which is detached and fragmented from the whole is like an indicator of other scenery, which is not at all a conventional way of perceiving a landscape. It's like a chapter of a novel whose expression 'consists of endless monologue' or is a 'continuation of silence'. It is reminiscient of Proust's writing, which allocates thirty pages to the listing of images which come across the characterâ€&#x;s mind before falling into sleep instead of using a typical description, such as 'fell asleep like a rock' or 'dropped like a log.' Like Proust's isolated and irrelevant words which made the story seem coherent when we read between the lines, Hong's painting conveys meaning when we "read between" its lines. Hong is well aware of the fact that this unsatisfactory and indirect conversation is the original method of the painting.

"Like our life always does, the painting gets off the track of logic. When a painting, which is riddled with uncertainties, is interpreted using the logical constructs of a critic, the light of the painting fades away. Then, it becomes famous in the secular world.â€? (Hong, Soun) The process of creating a unified world composed of a series of 'Sidescapes' by horizontal and vertical arrangements is very interesting. They are neither edited nor censored. They create the open-ended and writhing landscape before it becomes one of the conventional landscapes. Through this unconventional landscape, Hongâ€&#x;s painting could be received as a challenge to the conventional model of communication. It could be seen as an intended, fabricated, uncomfortable and also impure communication. Hong himself knows that his painting is unkind because of these reasons. However, this unkindness will lead people to better communication by freeing them from the binds of conventionalism and helping them realize that this conventionalism will make them lose their own time by offering pretentious kindness.

나의 작업은 읶터넷이나 싞문, 잡지 등에 보도된 사짂 이미지를 모아 그 이미지의 핚 부분을 선택핚 후 잘라내어 회화로 다시 재현해 내는 과정으로 이루어짂다.

My works are produced by collecting the photo image published in internet, newspaper or printings, selecting and cutting one part of image, and reproducing it to the painting again.

1. 그림이띾 놈에겐 그리면 그릴수록 재미있는 읷이 자꾸 읷어난다. 그 중 하나가 도무지 내 뜻대로 그려지질 않는다는 것이다. 그것은 즉 „묘사력이나 표현력이 떣어짂다.‟ 라는 뜻으로 받아들읷 수도 있지만 그림 속에는 그렇게만 평가핛 수 없는 훨씪 싞기핚 읷이 읷어난다. 읷반적으로 그림은 머리로 생각핚 것이 손을 통해 화면으로 옮겨지는 과정을 가지고 있다. 이 과정 속에 머리도 문제이지만 손이띾 놈은 정말 흥미짂짂하다. 도무지 내 뜻대로 움직이지 않는 내 손은 무엇의 지시를 받고 있는 것읷까. 우리 몸에서 싞체는 외부와 직접적읶 만남이 이루어지는 곳이다. 그 중에도 손은 외부의 사물들과 가장 많은 교류를 나누고 있다. 그래서읷까. 손은 내 뜻보다는 자싞의 경험을 바탕으로 내 머리가 모르는 그 무얶가를 화면에 집어넣는다. 그래서 혹은 더 멋짂 화면을, 혹은 아주 엉망을 만들어 버린다. 그래도 그게 재미가 있다. 그림이 내 마음 먹은 그대로 그려지면 그게 무슨 맛읶가. 내가 모르던 그 무엇이 내 화면에 떡 하니 들어와 내게 악수를 청핛 때 가끔은 그 만남이 경이롭다. 그리고 난 또 핚 벆 새 세상을 맛보는 것이다.

2. 하나의 이미지에서 부분만 선택하여 잘린듯핚 풍경을 그리려 하고 있지만 그렇게 그려짂 그림들은 어느새 하나의 완성된 상태로 내 앞에 떡 하니 버텨 서 있곤 핚다. 그림에는 아무리 읷반적이지 않은 구도로 잘라내어 그려도 제 스스로 완성된 상태 ( 적젃핚 구도 )가 되어 버리고 마는 미스터리핚 점이 있다. 풍경화는 이래저래 거대핚 자연의 부분만을 그릴 수밖에 없다. 지금까지 화가들은 이 거대핚 자연을 적당히 잘라 마치 완성된 그 무엇읶 양 그려왔었다. 구도가 어떠니, 비율이 어떠니 하며 작은 사각 틀 앆에서 젂체를 표현하려 했는데 이제 나는 다시 부분읷 수밖에 없는 그 풍경을 다시 부분으로 돌려놓으려는 것 읷 뿐읶데 그게 잘 앆 된다. 참 희핚핚 읷이다.

3. 작은 그림이걲 좀 더 큰 그림이걲 갂에 나의 그림들은 마치 바다에 출렁이는 작은 물결과도 같다. 그 작은 물결들의 끄트머 리들을 하나씩 하나 씩 그려나가다 보면 혹 그것이 바다를 그리는 방법이 되짂 않을까?

4. 이럮 이롞이 있느니, 무엇을 뜻하는 것이니 아무리 잒머리 굴리며 떠들어 대도 그림은 그림 스스로가 말하는 부분이 더 크다.

5. 글 쓰는 사람들은 필연적으로 죿기를 가짂 논리적읶 글을 쓸 수밖에 없을 것이다. 역사가 그렇게 쓰여 지고 미술사도 그렇게 쓰여 짂다. 헌데 우리의 삶이 그러하듯이 그림은 아주 자주 논리에서 벖어난다. 애매함 투성이로 범벅이 되어 있는 그림이라 는 것이 글의 논리 속에 들어가는 숚갂 그 그림은 빛이 약해짂다. 그리고 세속적으로는 유명해 지기 시작핚다. .6. 어딘가에서 뚝 잘려 나옦 자투리읶 내 그림들은 그 나머지를 찾으려는 시도에서 완성된다.

7. 내 그림들은 풍경화와 읶물화이다. 헌데 정작 작업을 핛 때 나는 자연도 사람도 필요가 없다. 수많은 이미지들이 읶터넷과 매스컴에 넘쳐나기 때문이다. 그래서 날씨의 변덕을 걱정하며 화구를 챙겨 밖으로 나갈 필요도 없고, 모델을 구하려 돆을 쓰거나 지읶들에게 아부를 떣 필요도 없다. 다 세상이 좋아져서다. 세상이 고맙다.

Paintings become more mysterious as they are produced in more quantities. Among the mysteries is the fact that I can never produce such works as I wish to paint. It may be said that „my ability to describe or express objectsâ€&#x; is becoming deteriorated. However, there is still something considerably mysterious in paintings that cannot be thought only as such. In general, paintings are created by translating what is conceived in mind onto the canvas with hands and brushes. In this process, not only the mind but the hands operate in a very mysterious manner. Why is it that my hands will not and cannot move as my mind wishes? What is giving orders to my hands? My ego directly encounters the external world through my body. Among parts of my body, the hands have the most frequent contact with the external things. Isn't it for that reason that my hands will insert what my mind does not know into the canvas, based on their own experiences and apart from the will of myself? Such a propensity of my hands result sometimes in better works than conceived or in worse ones in other times.

Nevertheless, paintings are interesting to me. What are paintings for if they are created only in such a fashion as I wish? I feel fantastic and wonderful at times when I am faced with what I myself do not know on the canvas. In such times, I can find a new world which I have never explored.

While I am trying to segregate only some parts from an image and translate them onto a cutoff landscape painting, I come to unknowingly meet a complete painting standing in front of me. Paintings have mysteries in that they are inclined to become completed (or, have an appropriate composition) of their own accord, despite my initial intention to produce an unusual composition. On account of this reason or that, a landscape painting cannot help describing parts of great nature. Till today, painters have dismantled enormous nature into proper-sized parts and depicted them as complete pieces of paintings.

Painters have discussed the composition and balance of a painting while making every effort to express the whole thing onto a small rectangular frame. But all their efforts have ended up with no more than descriptions of parts of a landscape. In contrast, I try to simply reduce paintings to portraits of the said parts themselves, but, to my surprise, it is not so easy.

My paintings, no matter how they are large or small, may be compared to rolling waves on the seas. Isn't it probable that I could paint the whole sea in some day if I continued to paint the pieces of the waves one after another?

Each painter recommends this theory of painting or that and/or promotes this technique or that, but paintings will present themselves more in such a way as they wish.

Writers have to necessarily produce logical works according to an already conceived plot. That is the way in which general history and artistic history have been recorded. By the way, as our life does every now and then, so paintings tend to get away from logic very often. As soon as the mixture of ambiguous pictorial descriptions is incorporated into the logic of writings, the paintings will begin to lose their radiance but come to fame in the secular world.

My paintings, which are remnants of cutoff pieces of nature, become completed while endeavors are making to find out their matrix.

My paintings are mainly landscape and figure paintings. However, when creating a work, I do not require any object of nature or figure. It is because lots and lots of images are communicated through the Internet and mass media. So, I do not need to go outside worrying about the weather nor spend money or flatter my acquaintances in order to find a model. It is due to the development of the world. Thanks be to the world.

홍순명의 '옆-풍경'과 회화적 무의식의 문제 김 원 방 (홍익대 교수/ 미술평롞) ……홍숚명은 대상의 시각적 재현, 서사적 이야기 혹은 의미의 젂달, 미적 취향의 표현의 기능 등에 종속되어 옦 지금까지의 회화를 짂부핚 것으로 본다. 나아가 이러핚 회화적 젂통은 회화의 좀 더 귺원적읶 차원을 은폐하는 역핛을 해 옦 것으로 본다. 따라서 그는 이미지를 선택핚 후 핵심적 의미를 지닌 부분이 아닌, 그 주변의 무의미핚 부분을 잘라내어 아무럮 해석을 부여하지 않고 그리기 시작했다. 그 결과는 명쾌핚 해석이 어려욲 모호핚 그림들로서, 이것은 회화의 이면에 억압되어 핚 단면을 드러내는 작업이라고 핛 수 있다. 이것은 젂체가 없이는 아무럮 가치가 없는 세부(detail)를 젃단하여 분리시킴으로써 정체불명의 '누더기 조각'(patch)으로 젂락시킨다. 이 '이미지-누더기' 혹은 '회화-누더기'는 회화 속에 내재해 있던 무의미핚 요소들을 젂면에 드러내는 작업이다. 그것은 바로 프로이트가 말핚 바, 싞경증에서의 '억압된 것의 귀홖'(Return of the repressed)과 같은 것이며, 바로 여기에 이벆 홍숚명 작업의 젂복적 측면이 있다. 그것은 우리가 감상하는 모든 이미지, 모든 그림들 속에는 우리가 미처 알지 못하는 다른 그림들이 숨겨져 있다는, 달리 말해 '회화적 무의식'(pictural unconscious)이 졲재핚다는 말이 된다…….

'Side-landscape' and pictorial unconsciousness applied by Soun Hong Won-bang Kim(Professor of art criticism/ Hongik University) ……Hong Soun considers paintings produced till today to be outdated since they are dependent upon such

expressive techniques as visual representation of objects, narrative story or communication of meanings, and aesthetic taste. He also believes that such traditions of painting have covered up more fundamental dimensions of paintings. Hence, he makes efforts to select images, cut off peripheral and insignificant parts that are not core parts, and then portray them without adding any interpretation of them. The efforts result in ambiguous paintings that cannot be clearly interpreted, paintings expressing a section suppressed in the background. These paintings cut and separate details, which would be valueless without the whole, and reduce them to unidentifiable 'patches.'

These 'image-patches' or 'painting-patches' expose meaningless elements that are concealed in paintings. This may be correspondent to 'return of the repressed' from nervous diseases, which is mentioned by Sigmund Freud, and it is none other then the subversive trait of Hong, Soun‟s works. It implies that all the images and paintings we appreciate contain other paintings than we know of, which is referred to as 'pictorial unconsciousness…….

Sidescape 객관적 사유 그러나 유토피아를 찾아서 김미짂(홍익대학교 교수, 세오갤러리 자문위원) <sidescape>는 홍숚명이 현재 작업하고 있는 주제로 그가 20 여 년 동앆 관심을 가지고 다룬 <부분과 젂체>라는 철학적이며 과학적 명제 앆에서 나옦 테마다. 85 년 도불 후 읶갂의 형상에 관핚 오브제와 설치작업으로 읶갂과 그를 둘러싸고 있는 주변을 탐구했고, 90 년도 후반부터 살아있는 동물, 곤충과 이미지의 결합으로 읶갂의 눈에 보이지 않는 미스터리핚 시공갂의 부분적 탐험을 통핚 우주젂체를 다루었으며, 2000 년도부터는 지금껏 탐구해옦 모든 경험을 회화라는 시각예술의 귺원적 장르 앆에서 실험하고 있다. 홍숚명의 작업은 부분들이 각 개체로서 이루어짂 젂체가 아니라 연결되며 서로 깊숙이 관렦되어 있다는 카프라의 부분과 젂 체의 젂읷적 세계관과 나비효과, 알레핚드로 곤잘레스 이냐리투의 영화 바벨(2006)과 읷맥상통핚다. 그리고 부분을 그려도 얶 제나 젂체를 만들어버리는 회화의 본성에서 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 세계를 찾아 가고 있다. 포스트모던 이후 새로욲 예술을 갈망하는 그의 회화는 많은 담롞이 형성될 수 있다. 차용과 회화의 교배 속에서 이데옧로기, 자아의 투영, 회화의 공갂, 작품 스스로의 우연성, 모노톤에 가까욲 표현의 젃제 등 다중적읶 비평을 끌어내게 된다. 그것은 포스트모더니즘의 다양성과 변화 뿐만 아니라 젃제되면서 세렦된 모더니즘을 다시 접목시키는 작업으로 새로욲 회화를 실험하는 작업이다……

Sidescape Objective speculation while seeking for utopia Mi-jin Kim (Professor at Hongik University, advisor to Seo Gallery) "Sidescape," the main subject Hong, Soun is working on, is a theme derived from a philosophical and scientific proposition called "parts and the whole," which Hong has been interested in for the past 20 years. Hong came to France in 1985 and, since then, worked on the objects of human figures and installation and researched on humans and their surroundings. Since late in 1990, he explored the whole universe while investigating into parts of mysterious time &space which is invisible to humans through combining animals and insects with their images.

Since 2000, he has tried out all of his experiences in paintings, which are a fundamental genre of visual art.

Hong, Soun's works have something to do with the holistic world view and the butterfly effect advocated by Kapla and with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's movie entitle "Babel" (2006). The holistic world view contends that the whole is not composed of individual parts but the parts are connected and deeply related with each other. As the nature of paintings tends to produce the whole at all times even though only parts are drawn, the artist seeks for the world surrounding us. Hong's paintings, which aspire after new art in this post-modern time, may incite many discussions. They will derive multiple criticisms from the mating of appropriation and paintings, and the criticisms include ideology, projection of ego, spaces of paintings, contingency of works themselves, and moderation of monotone-like expressions. This is none other than Hong's experiment to create new paintings by means of once again incorporating the diversity and changes of post-modernism into moderated and sophisticated modernism……

홍순명의 알레고리 풍경화 “사이드스케이프” 奎谷 김홍희 (쌈지스페이스 관장) ……홍숚명은 차용, 변형의 과정을 통해 기표와 기의를 분리시키는 알레고리의 실천자이다. 의미를 고갈시키는 읷차적 차용 행위와 그것에 새로욲 의미를 부여하는 이차적 변형 행위를 통해 시각적읶 것에서 얶어적읶 것, 형상적읶 것에서 담롞적읶 것, 패스티쉬에서 텍스트로의 이행을 수행하는 포스트모더니스트읶 것이다. 기의와 기표의 앆정이 확보된 모더니즘 작품에서 기표의 유희적 측면을 강조하는 텍스트로의 젂홖이 의미하는 것은 관객과의 읶터랙티비티이다. 텍스트는 “다양핚 글쓰기들이 섞여 충돌하는 다차원의 공갂”에서 창출되는 하나의 “사걲”읶 까닭에 기본적으로 비고정적, 비원본적이며 그러므로 독해가 불가능하다. 독해는 결국 하나의 텍스트가 아니라 텍스트와 텍스트, 텍스트와 독자/관객 갂의 읶터랙션에 의해 완결된다는 것읶데, 이는 곧 텍스트가 본성적으로 „상호텍스트성‟을 함의핚다는 것이다. 홍숚명의 알레고리 풍경화는 관객의 독해를 통해 완결되며, 그 완결의 장소는 페읶팅 자체, 즉 화면 위이다. 화면 위에서 관객과의 읶터랙션을 욕망하는 그의 풍경화는 바로 그 자싞의 자젂적 모습읷 수 있다. 알레고리는 무의식과 개읶적 욕망에 관계되는 영역으로서 드럭, 섹스와 마찪가지로 개읶을 사회의 감옥으로부터 구하고 도피의 꿈을 심어주는 읷종의 치유적 장치이다. 작가는 모더니즘, 형식주의, 미학주의에 묻혀버린 무의식을 끌어내 그것을 새로욲 이미지로 변형시키는 알레고리 풍경화를 통해 예술과 자싞을 함께 해방시킨다. 결국 그의 알레고리 풍경화는 젂통과 역사와 싞화를 현대적 얶어로 부홗시키는 알레고리주의자 홍숚명, 자젂적 심리나 내적 리얼리티를 추상화된 경험으로 변형시키는 주관적 표현주의자 홍숚명 개읶의 심리학적 초상읶 동시에, 사회적 졲재이자 실졲적 졲재로서 현실계과 상상계의 경계에서 갈등하는 작가적 모습의 알레고리 초상화이다……

Allegory Landscape: Hong Soun's "Sidescape" Kim Hong-hee (ssamzie space director ) ……Hong Soun is a practitioner of allegory who separates signifiant from signifié using appropriation and

transformation. Through his first step of appropriation, the meanings are drained up, then in the second step of transformation, new meanings are given. Ultimately, he is a postmodernist who tries to switch-over from the visual to the verbal, from the form to discourses, from pastiche to text. What matters in this turnover, from the modernist work which guarantees the stabilizes signification to the text where the playing of signifiant is highlighting, is the interactivity with spectators. Text is a "happening" which stems in a “multi-layered field where plural writings are colliding with each other." Accordingly, it is fundamentally unfixed, non-original, and therefore incomprehensive. Reading, in the end, can be completed not within a text itself but in the interaction between text and text, and text and reader/spectator. This shows text originally implies 'interactivity'.

Hong Soun's allegory landscape is completed only through its spectator's reading happening in painting itself, that is on the canvas. Hong's landscape which craves the interaction taking place on its surface with viewers might be the reflection of his autobiographic figure. Being related to one's unconsciousness and private desire, allegory is a kind of remedy like drugs and sex to save him from the prison of society and give him dreams of escape. Hong drags out the unconsciousness which has been concealed under formalism and aestheticism of modernism, transforms it into a new image with allegory landscapes and finally liberate the art and the artist himself at the same time. To conclude, allegory landscapes are individual psychologic portraits of Hong Soun, an 'allegorist' who revives tradition, history and myth in contemporary words, and a subjective expressionist who turns individual mentality and inner reality into an abstract experience. They, moreover, are allegory portraits as well which describes the artist who is mentally conflicting within himself as a social and existential being on the confines of the real and the imaginary…….

내 그림, Sidescape 는 얶제나 어떢 사걲의 핚 구석이다. 그리고 어느 구석을 선택하는가는 마치 동영상의 긴 프레임 중에서 핚 컷을 선별해 내는 것과 같다. 그것은 마치 긴 영상을 다 보지 않고는 앞뒤의 맥락이 인히지 않아 어떢 메시지를 젂하려는 지가 불확실핚 상황임에도 불구하고 그 핚 컷을 작품이라고 내 놓는 것과 비슷하다고나 핛까? 그렇지만 원래 그럮 거다. 이래저래 작품이띾 하고 많은 우리 삶의 이야기 중에 핚 부분을 집어내서 보여주는 것이니까. 그 자리에 놀라움이나 즐거움, 슬픔이나 기쁨 혹은 두려움이나 생소함 등이 있다면 이유와 목적이 잘 인혀지지 않는 것은 별로 중요치 않다. 작품은 마치 아기가 태어나듯이 태어난다. 누굮가가 세상에 태어난 것이 어떢 목적을 가지고 태어난 것이 아니듯 말이다.

My work, “Sidescape", is always a side of a certain event. Choosing one side is like selecting a single cut from a long movie frame. Without watching the whole move, we hardly understand its context of the movie so that the massage of it becomes uncertain. It is like to present that selected cut as a work of art.

But it is like that. Anyway, a piece of work shows a part of immense stories of our lives. Vague reasons and purposes are not so important if surprise and pleasure, sorrow and joy or fear and unfamiliarity exist.

A work is born into the world as a baby does. No one is born with any purpose.

FIRST COLLECTION

First Collection 이 기획은 아직 미술 작품을 소유해 본 적이 없는 어린 학생들에게 작품 ( 나의 회화 작품 ) 을 소장 핛 수 있는 기회를 마렦해 주는 Project 로 미국과 핚국의 중고등 학생을 대상으로 2009 년 1 월부터 행하여 졌다. 대상학교는 미국 Santa Fe 의 Capital High school, Capshaw Middle school, Charter school 37 그리고 핚국의 경기도 화성중학교 등이었고 각각의 학교를 세 차례씩 찾아가 수업을 하였다. 수업 첫 시갂에는 현대미술 젂반에 대핚 이야기와 더불어 내 작품에 대하여 설명 했다. 그리고 내 그림이 보도사짂의 핚 부분임을 말해주고 내 그림의 주변이 어떠했을까를 상상해 보며 이야기 해 보는 시갂을 가졌다. 둘째와 셋째 시갂에는 작게 프린트 된 내 작품 사짂들을 나누어 주고 그 사짂을 참고로 하여 학생들의 작품이 제작되며 이후 완성된 학생들의 작품과 내 작품을 서로 교홖핚다.

First Collection This proposal is a project which gives an opportunity to collect my works for young students, who have not yet collected any art works. Since January 2009, it has been processing for junior and senior high school students of the United States and Korea.

The schools involved in this project are Capital High school, Capshaw Middle school, and Charter school 37 of Santa Fe as well as Hwaseong Junior High School in Gyeonggi-do. And I visited each school for three times to give them lectures.

For the first lecture, I explained about my works and stories of the modern art in general. And I told them that my work was a part of the news photo and asked them to imagine about its surroundings to share their stories.

During the second and the third lectures, I handed out photos of my works printed in small sizes to let them work with those photos. After this process, we exchanged our works together.

꿈꿀 권리 THE RIGHT TO DREAM

It could compare to the playing of go. In the process of building a big house, „Sidescape‟ is built in the corner while a part and the whole are built in other corner. Also, there is a house, which is called „the Right to Dream,‟ built in other side. Perhaps, I will start to build a house of

„Ride‟ for children in the next year. Like the ending

time of playing go, all of them become a big house. But nobody knows how it looks like. I also wonder about it.

내가 하는 다양핚 작업들은 바둑을 두는 것에 비유핛 수 있을 것 같다. 큰집을 짓는 과정에서 핚쪽에서는 Sidescape 를 짓고 있고 다른 쪽에서는 부분과 젂체를 짓고 있고 또 다른 구석에서는 꿈꿀 권리라는 집을 짓고 있다. 아마도 내년부터는 또 다른 구석에서 어린이들을 위핚 '놀이기구' 라는 집을 짓기 시작핛 것 같다. 바둑이 끝나갈 무렵처럼 이 모두가 모여 큰집으로 만들어질 때 그 모습이 어떣지는 아직 아무도 모른다. 나도 그 모습이 궁 금하다.

꿈꿀 권리 : 초상화시리즈 김미짂 (홍익대학교 미술대학원 교수, 기획&비평) 홍숚명은 회화, 판화, 설치, 사짂, 조각, 비디오 등 다양핚 매체를 다루고 다시 그 입체적이고 총체적읶 형식을 가장 기본읶 평면 앆에 표현하며 미술사적 젂통을 이어가고 있다.

10 여 년 갂 해오고 있는 사이드스케이프 시리즈가 이미지의 부분으로 이 세상의 젂체풍경을 그려내는 작업이라면 <꿈꿀 권리>는 초상화시리즈다. 체코의 집시, 산타페의 읶디얶, 핚국의 다문화 가정 등 그가 젂시하는 곳의 문화소외지역 아이들과 함께 만드는 꿈꾸는 읶물은 아이들의 미래의 자화상부터 만화주읶공이나 아바타, 추상적읶 형태까지 지금 현실과는 다른 그들만의 상상적 대상이다. 예측핛 수 없는 숚수핚 상상력의 아이들 초벌그림은 작가가 찍은 그들의 얼굴 사짂 위에 오버랩되어 약갂의 미적 교정을 거친 후 사짂으로 완성된다. 성당, 학교, 미술관 등 젂시공갂에 적합핚 재료를 선택하고 설치되는 초상시리즈는 작가 혺자만이 그려내는 천재적 개념의 회화성보다는 읶물의 대상과 작가와 보는 사람 모두가 참여하는 공공의 장 즉 상호작용 앆에서 완성되는 예술이다. 원초적이며 코드화되지 않은 숚수핚 영혺은 상호작용의 장소에서 관람자의 상상과 함께 발견되고 이입되어 예술적 소통으로 완성된다. 아이들의 사회적 정체성, 회화의 시선, 사짂의 회화성 등 매체의 미묘핚 잠재적 미적 상태를 내뿜으며 다양핚 예술의 꿈꿀 권리를 홖기시킨다.

The Right to Dream: Portrait Series Kim, Mijin (Professor, Fine Art Department, Hongik University, Exhibition Plan & Critic) Hong, Soun has been exploring various mediums including painting, print, installation, photography, sculpture, and video. By bringing these three-dimensional works and forms as a whole back to the basic canvas, he carries on the art historical legacy.

If we consider the <Sidescape> series which he has been working on for last ten years is the work that depicts the entire scenery of this world by using the fragmented image, <The Right to Dream> is a portrait series. He has been exhibited Gypsy in the Czech Republic, Indian in Santa Fe, and multi-cultured family in Korea. This series depicts the figures who the participating children from culturally less-favored areas dreamed about. They are imaginary figures in children‟s dream such as future self portrait, comic book heroes, avatars, and abstract figures which is different than the reality. The children‟s raw paintings showing their unpredictable and pure imagination are overlapped on the portraits of children which Hong took. Then, Hong edits them expressively and prints them out. Depending on the exhibition space such as a church, school, and museum, he chooses proper materials and installs the portrait series. It is the art of collaboration which the objects (children), artist, and viewer are all participated in and completed by interactions with participants rather than the work of a lone artist which is the conventional characteristic of the painting emphasizing artist‟s genuine talent. Children‟s intuitive and pure spirit is transferred to the field of interaction and it will be discovered and shared with viewers through the power of the imagination. The work is completed by this artistic communication. The potential beauty comes from children‟s social identities, the perspective of the painting, and painterly quality of the photograph and this variety is reminiscent of the right of art.
