It is a great pleasure for us to present the exhibition <One Inspiration> in Poland.

아이디어〉 전시를 폴란드에 소개하게 되어 진심으로 기쁘게 생각합니다.

Serving as a “network hub connecting Korea with the world through culture,” the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) has been dedicated to promoting intercultural understanding through diverse cultural exchanges and contributing to global cultural development at large. To this end, KOFICE has initiated the “Traveling Korean Arts”

project in an attempt to support the international tours of Korea’s exhibitions and performances in cooperation with overseas Korean Cultural Centers and to encourage international exchanges on the basis of long-term collaborations. The project has connected various organizations throughout the world, thus establishing a solid foundation for sustainable cultural exchanges.

I am pleased to present One Inspiration: The Very First Ideas from Korean Tradition and Culture in Poland in this unprecedented circumstance of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. This is an exciting opportunity to see works by eleven leading artists from Korea together in one exhibition. Their contemporary color senses, techniques and media owe their creative inspiration to Korean tradition.

I hope viewers can both enjoy and discover more about the colorful characters and charm of Korean culture.

The Korean Cultural Center Poland aims to further interest and understanding of Korean tradition and contemporary culture through a range of events, lectures and workshops. I think it is particularly meaningful that we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the center with this exhibition in which Korean tradition and contemporary culture are harmoniously integrated, and in collaboration with the Royal Lazienki Museum, one of the key museums in Warsaw.

주 폴란드 한국문화원은 다양한 문화 예술 행사 및 강좌, Presented as part of this project in Warsaw, Poland, <One Inspiration> of SAVINA Museum is a special exhibition displaying creative works by artists representing Korea. The artists found their inspiration in traditional Korean culture to create these works.

The exhibition reminds us of the fact that the mystery of creation is derived from beautiful re-creation of tradition and modernity. This event is all the more meaningful in that it takes place at the Royal Lazienki Museum, which treasures the tradition of Warsaw. It is my hope that <One Inspiration> will prove to be a touching and comforting experience for citizens of Warsaw despite the global pandemic.

본 사업의 일환으로 폴란드 바르샤바에 소개되는 사바나미술관의 〈One Inspiration – 한국 전통문화에서 찾은 최초의 아이디어〉는 한국을 대표하는 작가들이 한국의 전통문화에서 아이디어를 얻어 창작한 작품들을 선보이는 전시입니다. 창조의 비밀은 전통과 현대성을 수용하여 아름답게 재창조하는 데서 비롯된다는 사실을 떠올리게 합니다. 바르샤바의 전통을 간직하고 있는 와지엔키 왕궁박물관에서 이 전시를 소개하게 되어 더욱 의미 있게 생각합니다. 전염병이 전 세계를 덮친 이 시대에 본 전시가 바르샤바 시민들께 감동과 위안을 전할 수 있길 바랍니다.

I am sincerely pleased to hold this exhibition <One Inspiration: The Very First Ideas from Korean Tradition and Culture> which is sponsored by Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, at the historic Royal Lazienki Museum in Warsaw and to co-host the exhibition with Korean Cultural Center in Poland.

Inspiration – 한국 전통문화에서 찾은 최초의 아이디어〉전시회를 주 폴란드 한국문화원과 함께 공동 주관으로 바르샤바의 유서 깊은 와지엔키 왕궁박물관에서 개최하게 된 것을 진심으로 기쁘게 생각합니다.

It is significant that eleven established artists reveal the creative process - from the finding of their very first ideas in traditional Korean culture to the production of their artwork which h fuses tradition and modernity. This international art event also includes video materials that allow audiences to appreciate the artworks on display in combination with their sources for inspiration from traditional cultural resources.

이번 전시는 한국 미술계를 대표하는 11명의 작가들이 한국 전통문화자원에서 최초의 아이디어를 얻어 전통과 현대성을 융합한 작품이 탄생하게 된 창작과정을 발표하는데 큰 의미가 있습니다. 그 뿐만 아니라 영감의 원천인 전통문화자원과 출품 작품을 상호 비교 분석한 영상 자료도 공개되는 뜻 깊은 국제 미술행사입니다.

사바나미술관이 본 전시를 기획하게 된 동기는 문화적

Savina Museum of Contemporary Art was motivated to put on this exhibition by our intention to provide a successful example of cultural ‘glocalism’. Glocalism is a relatively new term reflecting new concepts, combining globalism and localism. We conceived the exhibition as a strategy for the international promotion of Korean culture, globalizing the aesthetics of Korean tradition and simultaneously maintaining the identity of Korean art. In other words, this exhibition can be seen from the perspective of the expansion of culture embracing both the local specialty and global universality of Korean art. The Savina Museum of Contemporary Art aims to build an international cooperative system in the field of art and culture and develop exemplary cases of cultural exchange and collaboration not only with this exhibition but also in the future. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the participating artists and involved everyone else who made efforts to hold this exhibition successful.

인간은 존재 자체의 불완전성, 불확실성으로부터 자유로울 수 없다. 이러한 이유로 다양한 상(像)을 만들고 주술적인 능력을 기대하며 행복과 평안을 기원해왔다. 기원(祈願)의 행위는 구석기시대 동굴 벽화에서부터 유래를 찾을 수 있을 정도로 오랜 역사를 가지고 있으며 한국에서도 다양한 기원의 역사를 찾아볼 수 있다. 불교는 한국인의 정서와 사상에 깊이 자리하고 있으며 수많은 한국 문화유산의 원천이다. 이번 전시에서는 국보 83호 〈반가사유상〉을 모티브로 인간의 감정에 대한 깊은 사유를 담은 김승영의 조각을 만나볼 수 있다. 도깨비는 인간의 기원을 충족시켜주는 신앙의 대상이자 조선시대 서민들의 삶을 어루만져주는 친근한 존재였다. 부(富)를 가져다 주는 행운의 표식인 도깨비방망이는 김성복의 손에서 한국 현대사회의 모습을 투영한 새로운 의미의 작품이 되었다. 불로장생(不老長生)에 대한 염원이 담긴 상징물 ‘십장생(十長生)’은 왕실의 병풍에서부터 서민들의 생활소품에 이르기까지 널리 쓰였다. 유현미는 조각, 회화, 사진 등 다양한 매체가 혼합된 작품을 통해 십장생을 현대적인 길상(吉祥)으로 재탄생 시킨다.

Humans are not free from their own existential fallibility and uncertainty. Thus, humans have constantly created various imageries, assuming that they could have the magical power to bring happiness and peace to human lives. The act of prayer has a long history as its origin is attested in cave murals as early as Paleolithic times. And so, in Korea, prayers and wishes have long been expressed in a variety of forms. There are ten longevity symbols that are widely used as an expression of the wish for eternal youth. They appear everywhere from screens belonging to the royal family to ordinary items that everyone uses. Buddhism, deeply embedded in Korean sentiments and philosophies, has provided a rich source for Korean cultural heritage. Inspired by Pensive Bodhisattva (National Treasure No. 83), Kim Seung Young created a sculpture which conveys his deep contemplation on human emotions. Goblins, known as ‘dokkaebi’, were worshipped as benign beings in Joseon since it was believed that they could grant wishes and provide comfort. Dokkaebi’s club is regarded as a lucky symbol which brings wealth and, in the hands of Kim Sung Bok, became an art work which consoles those suffering hardships in contemporary life with hope. Yoo Hyun Mi renews these traditional symbols, known as ‘Sipjangsaeng’, as contemporary auspicious symbols, incorporating sculpture, painting and photography.

Kim Seung Young uses natural materials such as water, stones and moss, and media including sound, light and machines to make installations. He has constructed a self-reflective and consoling art world.

As a creative power, Kim takes emotions which arise in relationships with others such as pain and sadness, and creates pieces that allow the audience to experience these feelings. Sadness was inspired

by Pensive Bodhisattva (Korean National Treasure No.83), which is an important Buddhist sculpture of East Asia in 6th – 7th century. Kim embodied sadness and distress in a sublime smile of liberation, and changed the pensive pose into a posture of wiping a tear from the eye. Thus, by the artist’s interpretation, the pensive bodhisattva became a human bearing the weight of life. Mind portrays human emotions which are constantly in motion and within. The surface of water in a large cylinder remains still while water in a smaller inner cylinder swirls continuously. It offers the viewer a chance to look towards and reflect on truthful feelings.

김승영은 물, 돌, 이끼 등 자연물과 사운드, 빛, 기계장치 등의 매체를 이용한 설치작업으로 자아성찰과 위안을 주는 작품세계를 구축해온 작가다. 타인과의 관계에서 발생하는 고통, 슬픔 등의 감정을 작업의 동력으로 삼아 관람객이 직접 경험하고 느낄 수 있게 한다. 작품 〈슬픔〉은 6-7세기 동아시아의 대표적인 불교 조각품으로 손꼽히는 국보 83호 〈반가사유상〉을 모티브로 했다. 해탈의 미소는 슬픔과 고뇌를 담고, 깊은 사유에 잠긴 자세는 눈물을 닦으려는 듯한 자세로 바꾸면서 삶의 무게가 가득한 한 인간의 형상으로 재해석했다. 〈마음〉은 내면에서 수없이 흔들리고 있는 인간의 감정을 보여주는 작품이다. 큰 원통의 물의 표면은 미동 없이 잠잠하지만 가운데 작은 통 속의 물은 쉬지 않고 소용돌이 치고 있다. 관람객들은 본 작품을 통해 내면의 진실된 감정과 마주해보고 성찰해보는 시간을 가지게 될 것이다.

“ ‘나는 감정의 죄수다. 자신의 이야기를 해야만 하고, 잊어야만 하고, 용서해야만 한다. 그것만이 나를 자유롭게 한다’고 말한 루이스 부르주아(Louise Bourgeois)의 말처럼 제 작업은 나와 타자와의 소통의 방식이자 정신적 고통을 덜어주는 수단입니다. 삶을 삶 되게 하는 것, 인간을 인간이게 하는 것은 결국 감정입니다.”

“I am a prisoner of my emotions. You have to tell your story, and you have to forget your story. You forget and forgive. It liberates you.”1) As Louise Bourgeois said, art is a way of communicating with others for me and a means of diminishing my psychological pain. What makes a life life and a man human in the end is emotions.”

반가사유상(半跏思惟像)은 삼국시대 6-7세기에

Pensive bodhisattva is a type of statue that gained great popularity particularly in 6th – 7th centuries of the Three Kingdoms Period. It is a statue of a bodhisattva in pensive pose seated with his right leg resting on his left, and the fingers of his right hand touching his cheek. This kind of statue commonly had some form of crown with jewels, necklaces and bracelets, a garment formed with a waistband, and a lotus leg rest. Pensive Bodhisattva epitomized the ideal of every part of the body in organic harmony and is a precious art piece exemplifying the height of artistic techniques and the aesthetics in ancient Korean sculpture.

걸친 한정된 시기에 성행했다. 좌대에 앉아 왼쪽 다리는 수직으로 내리고 오른쪽 다리를 걸쳐 올린 반가좌(半跏坐)의 자세에 오른쪽 손을 뺨에 댄 채 생각에 잠긴 사유형(思惟形)의 보살상이다. 보관(寶冠)을 쓰고 목걸이나 팔찌를 착용하며 치마는 허리에서 띠를 묶어 고정하고 연화 족좌(足座)를 밟고 있는 것이 공통적인 형식이다. 반가사유상은 신체의 각 부분이 유기적으로 조화를 이루어야 하기 때문에 한국 고대 조각의 뛰어난 주조기술과 조형미를 보여주는 귀중한 자료다.

Sophisticated casting techniques practiced in the Three Kingdoms Period allowed Pensive Bodhisattva to reproduce a well-proportioned body, lifelike folds in clothing, and a simple yet elegant smile. The slightly upturned toes of the right foot supporting the elbow and the twisting of the arm to touch the cheek with bent fingers demonstrate outstanding expertise in this field. Rounded eyebrows joined to the bridge of the nose and small but slightly raised eyes provide neat and well-defined facial features.

The bodhisattva’s smile is completed with moderately raised mouth combined with those calmly closed lips.

There is a very similar wooden sculpture from 7th century of the Asuka period, which is a Japanese National Treasure and many exhibitions have been held to compare them. Academic researches and debates continue regarding the introduction of Buddhist sculpture from Korea to Ancient Japan and Pensive Bodhisattva is a very important subject in exploring this issue.

〈반가사유상〉은 삼국시대의 정교한 주조기술을 바탕으로 균형 잡힌 신체, 생동감 있는 옷 주름, 부처의 고졸한 미소를 표현했다. 오른쪽 무릎을 살짝 위로 들어 팔꿈치를 받치고, 팔은 비스듬히 꺾어 구부린 손가락이 뺨에 닿는 구성은 뛰어난 기술을 보여준다. 콧대로 이어지는 부드러운 눈썹과 작지만 살짝 올라간 눈이 시원하고 또렷한 인상을 준다. 입 꼬리가 살짝 올라가면서도 단정하게 다물어져 부처의 신비로운 미소가 완성되었다. 아스카시대 7세기 일본 국보인 목조 반가사유상과 형상이 유사해 비교하는 전시가 종종 기획되며, 한국 불상의 고대 일본 전래와 관련하여 많은 학술연구와 논의가 이루어지고 있는 중요한 작품이다.

Kim Sung Bok presents humorous sculptures inspired by legendary creatures in Korean mythology such as dokkaebi, haetae, and dragons. In Korean folk beliefs, dokkaebi is a familiar being who offers help with material needs and grants wishes to people, and dokkaebi’s club brings wealth. Dreams of Dokkaebi, a wood sculpture, began with stories from the dreams of people at various ages ranging from a five-year-old child to an eighty-year-old man.

Dream Spoon merges a club with a spoon and is based on the artist’s observation on current social issues in Korea around particular terms such as ‘soilspoon’ and ‘gold spoon’. Kim conceived this piece to

김성복은 한국의 전설이나 신화 속에 존재하는 도깨비, 해태, 용 등에서 영감을 받아 해학적인 조각을 선보인다. 한국의 민속신앙에서 도깨비는 물질적인 필요나 기원을 충족시켜주는 친근한 존재이며, 도깨비 방망이는 부(富)를 가져다 주는 행운의 표식이다. 작품 〈도깨비의 꿈〉은 5세 아이부터 80세 노인에 이르는 다양한 사람들의 ‘꿈’을 듣고 영감을 받아 제작한 나무조각이다. 도깨비 방망이와 숟가락이 결합된 〈꿈수저〉는 한국의 사회적 이슈인 ‘금수저’, ‘흙수저’ 키워드에서 착안했다. 손잡이를 눌러 흔들리게 해도 오뚝이처럼 다시 일어서는

encourage young people struggling to get closer to their dreams. Like a roly-poly toy, the piece is tilted every time someone pushes its handle but rights itself. Myth represents a sacred imaginary animal, known as haetae, with a tail shaped like a dokkaebi club. Haetae is a guardian capable of judging good and evil and Kim increases the vividness by painting colorful traditional patterns, known as ‘dancheong’, onto the face of his haetae.

작품을 통해 꿈을 실현하기 힘든 젊은 세대들에게 용기를 주고자 한다. 〈신화〉는 도깨비 방망이 꼬리와 수호의 동물인 해태 얼굴에 화려한 색감의 전통 단청문양이 더해진 생동감 넘치는 작품이다.

“한국의 도깨비는 해학적입니다. 남을 괴롭히기보다는 같이 노는 친근한 이미지죠. 도깨비 방망이는 부를 상징합니다. 돼지는 동양적으로 부를 상징하고 이를 쌓은 형상이 부의 축적을 의미하는 것처럼 일상의 희망적인 내용을 조각으로 표현하고 있습니다.”

“Korean goblins, known as dokkaebi, are witty. They appear to be friendly enough to play with people rather than distressing them. The dokkaebi’s club signifies wealth. The pig also stands for wealth in the East, so a herd of pigs suggests the growth of wealth. I am interested in expressing hopes in our everyday lives through sculpture.”

가깝고도 먼 존재, 도깨비 Dokkaebi, A Close and Distant Creature

Dokkaebi is a mystical creature familiar to Koreans.

There are many tales of dokkaebi transmitted by word of mouth but it is difficult to define formalized aspects of them. ‘Dotgabi’ – an old version of the word appears for the first time in Seokbosangjeol1), a book published in the period of Sejong the Great, the fourth king of Joseon. ‘Dot’ denotes fire or grain which represent fruitfulness, ‘abi’ means an adult man. Therefore, the combination of these two words signifies a man who brings abundance. The ancients believed that dokkaebi had sacred power, and dokkaebi rites praying for a good harvest and a big catch are still held in some regions of Korea. Images of dokkaebi were often used on roof tiles and door handles as it was thought they could prevent disaster and disease.

도깨비는 한국인에게 친근하면서도 신비로운 존재다. 도깨비 이야기는 구전으로 전해져, 정형화된 모습을 규정짓기가 어렵다. 조선 4대왕 세종대왕 때의 간행물 『석보상절(釋譜詳節)』에 처음으로 도깨비의 옛말인 ‘돗가비’가 등장한다. ‘돗’은 생산력을 상징하는 불이나 곡식의 씨앗을 뜻하고, ‘아비’는 남자를 뜻한다. 즉 풍요를 가져다 주는 사람이라는 의미가 있다. 고대인들은 도깨비를 신성한 능력을 지닌 존재로 여겼고, 지금까지도 한국의 지방에서는 풍년이나 풍어를 기원하는 도깨비 제사가 이어지고 있다. 도깨비 문양은 기와나 문고리 등에 많이 사용되어 재앙과 질병 등을 막아내는 기능을 하기도 했다.

조선시대에는 도깨비의 구체적인 모습들이 만들어졌다.

Further detailed features of dokkaebi were developed in the Joseon period. The goblins were reborn as a character who likes millet tteok2), buckwheat jelly, and alcoholic drinks, and sometimes plays tricks and at other times brings good fortune.

After dark, they look like a human but during the day they transform themselves into ordinary objects such as a cooking pot or a pestle and mortar.

Dokkaebi consoled commoners who had hard lives by criticizing aristocrats. The only pictorial image of dokkaebi is found in a painting from the Filial Piety of a Devoted Son from the Chae Family series by Heo Ryun, a painter from Joseon. This painting illustrates an episode involving a man named Chae Hongnyeom: One day Chae got caught in a rainstorm on a mountain. He cried out, and then dokkaebi fire appeared and guided him in the right direction. In this painting, dokkaebi fire is depicted as a goblin resembling a short man who carries a burning torch.

수수떡, 메밀묵, 술을 좋아하며 장난꾼이자 재물을 안겨주는 존재로 재탄생 했다. 해질녘에는 사람의 모습이다가 낮에는 솥, 절구 등 물건으로 변신하고, 양반사회를 풍자하여 서민들의 힘든 삶을 어루만져주는 존재로 인식되었다. 유일한 그림 형상은 조선시대 화가인 허련의 〈채씨효행도〉 에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 채홍념이 산길에서 비바람을 맞아 통곡하니 도깨비불이 나타나 길을 이끌어주었다는 내용으로 작은 사람 모양의 도깨비가 횃불을 든 모습이다.

유현미 Yoo, Hyun Mi

Yoo Hyun Mi has presented original works, combining different media: sculpture dealing with actual objects; painting allowing surrealistic expression; and photography and moving images suited to representation. She creates a backdrop space wherein her sculpted objects are installed.

Painterly materiality is emphasized, the constructed space becomes surrealistic in the course of being photographed and filmed. Crossing the borders between photography and painting, the two dimensional and the three-dimensional, her work engenders chaos. In this exhibition, Yoo presents a series of The Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity which expresses wishes for health and longevity, based on Korean philosophical and religious traditions such as nature worship, belief in godlike hermits, known as ‘sinseon’, and Taoism. The set of ten longevity symbols is one of the characteristic lucky symbols in Korea which illustrates the desire for eternal youth. In Yoo’s work entitled Good Luck -

The Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity No. 1, deer antlers on top of a green ladder suggest a deer as an auspicious animal living for thousands of years, and balls scattered over the floor simply represents the sun and stars. Clouds and water, embodied as part of the background in a hazy, dreamlike color tone, call attention to the artist’s contemporary translation of the ten longevity symbols. In Good Luck - The Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity and Books No. 1, the iconography of ten longevity symbols are represented as contemporary objects in an unusual composition: clouds as illustrated clouds in a calendar, water as water in a bottle, a crane as a paper crane, and a peach as a peach floating in the air. These motifs, being so deeply rooted in Korean heritage, sentiment and philosophy, will certainly stimulate audiences’ curiosity and imagination.

십장생, 불로장생을 꿈꾸다 Sipjangsaeng, The Dream of Eternal Youth

십장생(十長生)은 ‘불로장생(不老長生)’을 상징하는 열

Sipjangsaeng refers to a set of ten animals and objects which signify a long life. The sun, moon or clouds, mountains, water, rocks, cranes, deer, turtles, pine tree, and mushroom-of-immortality are mostly regarded as ten symbols of longevity but sometimes bamboo and peach are included.

In eastern philosophies, the number ten signifies perfection and eternity as it completes other numerals. It is not difficult to assume that iconography of ten longevity symbols has a long history: a poem about sipjangsaeng is included in an anthology entitled Mogeunjip by Lee Saek, an academic and official in the late Goryeo period; images regarding sipjangsaeng are found in a tomb mural from Goguryeo1). Paintings of sipjangsaeng have intense colors to portray theatrically the world of sinseon (godlike hermits). Auspicious animals like deer, turtles, and cranes roam free, peaches and mushrooms-of-immortality grow with the sun, moon, clouds, mountains and rocks in the background. In the court of Joseon, these ten longevity symbols were often painted, praying for health and longevity for the nation and the king, and also given by the king to courtiers as a new year’s gift. Later this iconography was introduced to commoners and widely used in woodcraft, needlework, architecture and more. This is still present as original Korean cultural heritage.

가지 사물을 뜻한다. 해, 달 또는 구름, 산, 물, 바위, 학, 사슴, 거북, 소나무, 불로초를 꼽지만 대나무와 복숭아가 포함되기도 한다. 동양사상에서 십(十)은 모든 수를 갖추는 숫자이므로 완전함, 영원성도 나타낸다. 고려 후기 문신인 이색(李穡)은 『목은집(牧隱集)』에 장생을 기원하는 ‘십장생시(十長生詩)’를 남겼으며, 고구려 고분벽화에도 십장생 도상들이 발견되는 것으로 미루어보아 오랜 역사를 가졌음을 짐작할 수 있다. 십장생도(十長生圖)는 화려한 색채를 사용하여 신선들의 세계를 보다 극적으로 형상화했다. 해, 달, 구름, 산, 바위 등을 배경으로 하고 사슴, 거북, 학 등 상서로운 동물들이 뛰놀거나 복숭아, 불로초 등이 표현되었다. 조선시대 궁중에서는 나라와 임금의 만수무강을 기원하며 십장생도를 그렸으며, 새해를 맞이하여 왕이 중신들에게 선물하기도 했다. 십장생도는 점차 민간에도 전해져 목공예품, 자수품, 건축물 등에 광범위하게 사용되며 한국의 고유한 문화유산으로 이어져 왔다.

선조의 생활 – 삶의 정취 Life of Ancestors – Flavor of Life 김범수 김창겸 이길래 이이남 남경민 성동훈 한국전통의 조각보는 서민들이 자투리 천을 모아 사용했던 생활용품으로써, 점차 배색과 패턴에 대한 감각을 발전시키며 독창적인 자신만의 조각보를 만드는 한 시대의 문화로 발전했다. 김범수는 버려지는 영화 필름을 색깔 별로 구분해 재배열함으로써 전통 조각보의 패턴을 연상시킨다. 김창겸은 폴리우레탄이나 석고로 만든 도자기 위에 한국의 사계절 풍경과 전통문양을 담은 영상을 투사하여 이미지와 실재, 재현에 대해 생각해보는 시간을 갖게 한다. 조선시대 선비들은 유교사상을 바탕으로 인격완성을 위해 학문을 탐구하고 서화를 즐겼다. 이러한 삶의 정취는 선비들의 방인 문방(文房)에 잘 드러난다. 이번 전시에 소개되는 작품에서는 조선시대 대가로 손꼽히는 정선과 신윤복의 화방 속 그들의 대표 작품, 문방제구(文房諸具) 등과 더불어 남경민 작가 본인을 은유하는 상징물들이 혼재하는 초현실적인 공간을 만나볼 수 있다. 사계절 내내 푸르른 소나무는 곧은 절개, 장수를 상징하며 한국의 나무로 불릴 만큼 한국인의 삶과 깊이 연관되어 있다. 역사 속 다양한 예술작품에 영감을 주기도 한 소나무는 이길래의 회화적 조각으로 재탄생 했다. 작가는 전통적인 패턴을 모티프로 동시대 사람들의 이야기를 마주하게 한다. 이이남은 동서양의 고전 명화들을 자신만의 고유한 미디어아트로 재해석하여 한국 전통의 아름다움을 디지털 기술이 접목된 새로운 방식으로 제시한다. 이번 전시에서 이이남은 안견의 <몽유도원도>, 김홍도의 <묵죽도>, 정선의 <금강전도>를 재해석한 미디어 작품을 선보이며 한국 산수의 회화적 아름다움을 영상과 빛을 이용하여 구현한다. 성동훈은 한국의 불교적 표현양식과 자신의 경험, 동물형상을 결합하는 실험을 선보인다. 실험의 결과물은 전통과 현대, 강함과 부드러움이 혼재된 현시대를 나타내는 새로운 창조물이다. 작가는 불협화음 같은 상이한 재료로 화음을 일궈 현실 속 일그러진 초상을 폭로하고 무분별하게 공존하는 삶을 역설적으로 표현한다.

Traditional Korean patchwork called ‘jogakbo’ was an everyday item made by commoners with leftover fabrics and as the skills of arranging colors and designs evolved, jogakbo became a dominant culture: people made their own individual. Kim Bum Su rearranges and assembles discarded film strips by colors, evoking the process of making jogakbo. Using the traditional motif, the artist tells a story of his contemporaries. Kim Chang Kyum projects moving images of landscapes of the four seasons in Korea onto a On Ceramics with traditional patterns l and allows the viewer to ponder about image, the real, and representation. Scholars of Joseon, known as ‘seonbi’, pursued learning and enjoyed painting and calligraphy as a means to cultivate the self and virtue according to the teachings of Confucianism.

This lifestyle is well reflected in scholars’ studies, called ‘munbang’. Nam, Kyung Min presents works that depict the ateliers of Jeong Seon and Sin Yun-bok who are recognized as Joseon’s masters of art. In her work, their ateliers become surrealistic spaces where the two artists’ representative works and stationery as well as Nam’s own metaphoric and symbolic objects coexist.

Evergreen pine trees which symbolize constancy and longevity are deeply connected to Koreans’ lives - so much so that they are called the tree of Korea.

These pine trees which have been an inspiration for many art works in history are reborn as painterly sculpture by Lee Gil Rae. Lee Leenam reinterprets Eastern and Western classical paintings with his own media art, thus expressing the beauty of Korean tradition in a new way with digital technology. In this exhibition, he presents media art works reinterpreting Mongyudowondo by An Gyeon, Mukjukdo by Gim Hongdo and Geumgangjeondo by Jeong Seon in an attempt to embody the painterly beauty of Korea’s natural landscapes through moving images and light.

Sung Dong Hun brings together Buddhist expression, his personal experience and imageries of animal to represent the current world where traditional and modern, hard and soft are mingled. Harmony made out of disparate materials ironically portrays the distortions and turbulence of our times

한국의 색, 오방색 Five Traditional Korean Colors

There are five traditional Korean colors called ‘Obangsaek’. They are based on the concepts of and belief in Yin and Yang as well as the Five Elements: Yin and Yang became earth and sky, then five elements – fire, water, wood, metal, earth – are generated. This idea relates five colors to five directions and gave meanings to them. Yang colors – Blue, red, yellow, white, and black – are associated with the four cardinal directions plus the center and they are fundamental colors. In between those five fundamental colors are Yin colors – green, dark blue, bright red, sulphur yellow, and purple. Red corresponds to fire and the south, where all life grows. It signifies the sun, fire, blood, passion, enthusiasm. Black corresponds to water and the north, and signifies human wisdom. Blue is associated with wood, the east, and represents creation and life. This color was believed to have power to exorcise evil spirits and was used when wishing for luck. White stands for metal, the west, truth, life, and purity. This is one reason why Korean people often wore white clothes. Yellow corresponds to earth and signifies the center of the universe. As a noble color, yellow fabric was only granted to the king.

한국의 전통 색을 오방색(五方色)이라 한다. 음과 양의 기운이 하늘과 땅이 되고 화(火), 수(水), 목(木), 금(金), 토(土)의 오행을 생성하였다는 음양오행사상을 기초로 하며 5가지 색과 방위를 연결하고 의미를 부여하여 사용했다. 청(靑), 적(赤), 황(黃), 백(白), 흑(黑) 5가지 색은 동서남북과 중앙의 다섯 방위와 연결되며 이는 양색(陽色)으로써 기본색(正色)으로 불린다. 반면 다섯 방위 사이에 놓이는 사이색(間色)은 녹색, 벽색(짙은 푸른색), 홍색, 유황색, 자색으로 음색(陰色)이라 칭했다. 적(赤)은 오행 가운데 화(火)에 상응하며 만물이 무성한 남쪽과 연결된다. 태양, 불, 피 등 정열, 적극성을 뜻한다. 흑(黑)은 오행 가운데 수(水)에 상응하며 북쪽과 연결되어 인간의 지혜를 의미한다. 청(靑)은 목(木)으로써 동쪽에 해당하고 창조, 생명을 상징한다. 귀신을 물리치고 복을 비는 색으로 사용되었다. 백(白)은 금(金)으로 서쪽에 해당하고 진실, 삶, 순결 등을 뜻하며 우리민족이 흰 옷을 즐겨 입는 원인이기도 하다. 황(黃)은 토(土)로 우주의 중심이자 가장 고귀한 색으로 인식되어 임금만이 황색 옷을 입을 수가 있었다.

만인의 작품, 조각보 Work of Everyone, Korean Patchwork

The early use of wrapping cloth is not clearly documented but presumably it began to be used for keeping things safe and for easy transportation.

Korean wrapping cloth is called ‘bojagi’ and corresponds to the Chinese letter ‘ ’(bog). Back then, this Chinese letter was often associated with its homonym ‘福’(bog) meaning good fortune. Such a secular belief that ‘bojagi’ can maintain good fortune accelerated the development of this type of cloth.

‘Bojagi’ were widely used by all classes of Korean society. Commoners could not have exquisitecolored cloth according to the social norms of that time. They only got scraps of leftover fabrics from aristocrats and made a larger wrapping cloth by sewing them together. We still see many patchwork fabrics, known as ‘jogakbo’, kept in good condition as many were made especially for ‘hope chests’ and often handed down in families. It began with the purpose of recycling and became a culture, enriching the senses of color arrangement and designs.

Natural dyes from plants such as Cape jasmine, indigo, and safflower fostered the development of ‘jogakbo’. Commoners could make their own ‘jogakbo’ by dyeing with accessible materials such as persimmons, soil, and ink. A unique Korean tradition, ‘jogakbo’ with typically bright multiple colors still continues today.

보자기의 초기 사용 시기는 명확히 알 수 없으나 물건의 안전한 보관과 간편한 이동을 위해 생긴 것으로 추측된다. 보자기의 한자어 ‘복( )’은 ‘복(福)’과 뜻이 통하는 것으로 믿어졌으며, 보자기에 싸두면 복이 간직된다는 속신이 발달을 활성화시켰다. 모든 계층이 폭 넓은 용도로 보자기를 사용했는데, 한국의 전통사회에서는 사회 규율에 따라 평민들은 색(色)이 있는 귀한 천을 지닐 수 없었기 때문에 평민들은 양반들이 짓고 난 여러 가지 색의 자투리 천을 이용해 자신들만의 조각보를 만들게 된다. 특히 혼수품으로 제작된 조각보들은 후손들에게 대물림 되어, 잘 보존된 상태로 현재에도 만날 수 있다. 일종의 재활용으로 시작된 조각보는 배색과 패턴에 대한 감각을 발전시키며 하나의 문화로 형성되고, 쪽, 치자, 홍화 등 자연 염료로 색색으로 염색하며 더욱 발전했다. 서민들도 감물과 황토, 먹물처럼 쉽게 구할 수 있는 염료로 조각보를 완성하여 우리 민족 특유의 밝고 환한 색색의 조각보를 이어오게 된다.

Kim Chang Kyum poses endless questions about illusion, image, the real, and representation. He uses video installation and composite photography to show artificial realities. By layering virtual images onto virtual objects such as a polyurethane mirror and a plaster dish, he breaks the boundary between the real and the fictional and challenges our perception and prejudice regarding image. In Water Shadow & Flower 3, images of natural landscapes are displayed on a round white plate as if they are a reflection on the surface of water, and Korean traditional motifs emerge. Swallows fly over lotus flowers in a Korean folk painting and a woman appears and looks towards the viewer. Butterflies fly up freely from a painting and at the end, the artist’s signature comes into sight revealing that everything else was virtual.

작가는 폴리우레탄이나 석고로 만든 거울, 접시 같은 가짜 오브제 위에 가상의 영상을 투사하여, 실제와 허구의 경계를 허물고 이미지에 대한 선입견과 편견을 흔들어 놓는다. <Water shadow & Flower3>은 원형의 흰색 접시 위에 영상으로 물이 비춰지고 한국의 자연풍경과 전통 문양이 투사된다. 영상엔 전통 민화에 자주 등장하는 연꽃 위에 제비가 날아가고, 한 여인이 등장하여 관람객과 마주한다. 마지막 장면에는 작가의 낙관이 등장하고 하얀색의 접시 오브제만 보여지면서 모든 것이 가상의 상황이었음을 일깨워 준다.

“물 안을 들여다보면 낯선 사람이 지나가거나 관람객과 마주 본다. 간혹 그림자가 등장하여 상황을 바꾸기도 한다. 그림자라는 것은 일상에서 홀로 존재할 수 없다. 그러나 작품에 나오는 사람들의 그림자는 진짜 같으나 그 주인을 알 수 없다. 진짜인 듯 보이면서 작품 스스로 가짜임을 드러내기도 한다.”

“I look into the water and see strangers passing by or the face of a member of the audience. Sometimes a shadow appears and changes the scene. A shadow cannot be cast alone in reality.

The shadows of people in my work look real, but we don’t know who they belong to. They appear to be real but simultaneously the work itself reveals they are fabrications.”

Traditional Korean designs employed symbols carrying wishes for a utopian life: designs incorporating pomegranates and grapes symbolize the wish for a son and peonies were an expression of wishing for wealth. During the Joseon dynasty, designs with letters – letters written in a square or a circle – or those with the ten longevity symbols were preferred. Buncheong ware has a more experimental and practical form than celadon or white porcelain and a variety of decorative modes such as stamping and inlaying were applied. Different designs and motifs were used according to each decorative mode. Blue-and-white porcelain, which is a type of white porcelain decorated with cobalt blue, was first produced around the 15th century during the Joseon dynasty. Since a limited amount of cobalt ore was imported, only the rich enjoyed them.

Naturally, landscape, portrait, and the so-called Four Gentlemen1) were often painted on the porcelain.

However, the range of designs was expanded to include expressions of wishes for longevity and good fortune, and this suggests white-and-blue porcelain was also enjoyed by other classes in later times.

아들의 탄생을 소망하는 석류와 포도, 부귀(富貴)에 대한 소망이 담긴 모란 문양처럼 한국의 전통 문양은 상징적 기호로 이상적인 삶에 대한 기원을 담고 있다. 조선시대에는 글자를 사각형이나 원형 안에 써넣은 문자문양, 불로장생을 기원하는 십장생문양 등이 선호되었다. 분청사기는 청자나 백자 보다 자유분방하고 실용적인 형태로 인화문기법(印花文技法), 상감문기법(象嵌文技法) 등 여러 가지 기법이 있으며 각 기법에 어울리는 문양을 넣었다. 백자에 푸른색 안료로 문양을 그리는 조선시대 청화백자(靑 白瓷)는 15세기경 처음 제작되었다. 코발트 안료는 소량만 수입되었기 때문에 부유층만 제한적으로 향유했다. 산수, 인물, 사군자 등이 그려졌으나, 나중에는 장수와 복을 기원하는 문양이 널리 확대되어 여러 계층에서 향유되었음을 보여준다.

이길래는 소나무를 주제로 ‘회화적 조각’을 선보인다.

Lee Gil Rae creates ‘painterly sculpture’ focusing on the pine tree as a subject. Pine trees are closely related to the lives of Korean people, thus they appear in literature, painting, and many other art forms as a source of inspiration. Lee began to address pine trees in his art as a way of expressing nostalgia for nature maintaining purity in this industrialized world. He organically connects numerous oval copper pipe rings as if they are cells and systematically welds them. By doing so, he obtains that particular texture of pine trees in Korea which resembles a turtle shell. Through the labor-intensive production process, the many hours of delicate work imbue this piece with the vitality and cohesion fundamental to regenerative nature.

The artist hopes that humanity and nature can unite through the symbolism of the pine tree which remains green even in the harshest lands. Bearing in mind how long it took to make, the work provides the viewer with an opportunity to ruminate on their own lifetime.

소나무는 한국의 나무로 불릴 만큼 한민족의 삶과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있으며 예술분야에 깊은 영감을 주어 문학, 명화 등에 다양한 모습으로 나타난다. 이길래는 산업화 시대 속에서 순수함을 간직한 자연에 대한 동경으로 소나무 연작을 시작했다. 타원형 동 파이프 고리는 하나의 세포가 되어 유기적으로 연결된다. 수백, 수천 개의 고리를 조직적으로 용접하여 한국 소나무인 금강송(金剛松) 특유의 거북이 등껍질 같은 느낌이 살렸다. 노동집약적인 제작방식을 통해 작품 속에는 시간이 누적되고, 자연물의 생성원리인 응집과 생명력을 구현한다. 척박한 땅에서도 생명력을 유지하는 소나무의 상징적 의미를 통해 인간과 자연이 하나가 되기를 바란다. 또한 시간이 켜켜이 누적된 작품을 마주한 관람객들에게는 지나온 삶을 돌아보는 계기가 될 것이다.

한국의 소나무 The Tree of Korea

예술적 영감의 원천이 되다 Source of Artistic Inspiration

The evergreen pine tree stands for constancy and fidelity in Korea. It is also one of ten longevity symbols, known as sipjangsaeng. Our ancestors celebrated a birth by hanging a straw rope with pieces of pine tree at the entrance to the house and used pine tree furniture throughout their whole lives. After death, they rested in a pine coffin and were buried in a grave under pine trees. In Korea, pine trees are often called ‘Geumgang-song’1) since Geumgang Mountain is a famous habitat. Sometimes they are called ‘Jeok-song’2) due to the trunks being tinged with red. Pine trees growing in Korea are typically very tall, and the timber they provide is particularly strong and long-lasting. One of the largest habitats in Korea is located near a small town called Sogwang-ri (Uljin-gun, Gyeongsang province).

This habitat, protected by a special preservation program, is the ‘Geumgang Pine Tree Forest Walkway’ and more than 1.6 million pine trees live here.

사계절 내내 푸르른 소나무는 한국의 역사 속에서 절개와 의지를 상징한다. 또한 장수를 상징하여 십장생(十長生)의 하나로 삼기도 했다. 선조들은 금줄에 소나무로 달아 탄생을 축하하고, 평생 소나무 가구를 사용하며, 소나무 관이 묻힌 무덤 주변을 소나무가 지키는 삶을 살았다. 한국 소나무는 금강산에서 많이 자생하여 금강송(金剛松), 줄기가 붉은색을 띄어 적송(赤松)이라고도 불리며 키가 크고 재질이 단단하고 잘 썩지 않는 특징이 있다. 경상북도 울진군 소광리에 위치한 ‘금강소나무 숲길’은 한국 최대의 금강송 군락지로 160여만 그루의 금강송이 현재까지도 특별 보존 관리되고 있다.

The pine tree has served as source of artistic inspiration for literature, painting, and craft. Scholars with A Pine Tree by Jeong Hong-rae depicted scholars in conversation in a wooded valley, rendering an everyday landscape in which pine trees are always around and much appreciated. In Walsong Pavilion, Jeong Seon demonstrated his unique painterly techniques by portraying pine trees to great effect. He placed a dense forest of pine trees in the middle of the picture plane and painted the treetops with blurred outlines so as to resemble clouds.

소나무는 문학, 회화, 공예 작품의 예술적 영감을 주는 원천이기도 하다. 정홍래의 〈소나무와 선비〉 는 계곡 옆에서 담소를 나누는 선비들의 모습을 통해 소나무를 가까이 두고 아꼈던 선조들의 삶의 정취를 보여준다. 조선시대 화가 정선의 〈월송정(越松亭)〉에는 한국의 소나무를 효과적으로 그리기 위해 개발한 독특한 기법을 찾아볼 수 있다. 빽빽한 소나무 숲이 화폭 중앙에 놓이고, 먹의 풍부한 번짐 효과를 담은 표현법으로 소나무 잎을 구름처럼 표현했다.

Lee Lee Nam reinterprets Eastern and Western classical paintings with his own media art, thus expressing the beauty of Korean tradition in a new way with digital technology. In this exhibition, he presents media art works reinterpreting Mongyudowondo by An Gyeon, Mukjukdo by Gim Hongdo and Geumgangjeondo by Jeong Seon in an attempt to embody the painterly beauty of Korea’s natural landscapes through moving images and light.

In this way, the artist lets go of the conventional, fixed form of landscape painting and turns to a more fluid, modern one. Combing what is digital and analogue, the artist evokes spatiotemporal illusions coming from the gap generated by such a heterogeneous combination. The audience feel this changed world both visually and perceptually and experience the tension and amusement found between the visible, real world and the virtual world.

The artist combines technology and art to serve as a mediator between the past and the present. At the same time, he changes the relationship between the two in a practical and perceptual way. With this, he realizes his original media art coupled with his own digital technology.

이이남은 동서양의 고전 명화들을 자신만의 고유한 미디어아트로 재해석하여 한국 전통의 아름다움을 디지털 기술이 접목된 새로운 방식으로 제시한다. 이번 전시에서 이이남은 안견의 <몽유도원도>, 김홍도의 <묵죽도>, 정선의 <금강전도>를 재해석한 미디어 작품을 선보이며 한국 산수의 회화적 아름다움을 영상과 빛을 이용하여 구현한다. 이처럼 이이남은 과거의 산수화의 형태를 벗어나 유동적이고 가변적인 현대의 신-산수화로 디지털과 아날로그의 통합을 시도하며 이질적인 결합에서 오는 간극에 따른 시공간적 환영을 불러일으킨다. 관객은 변형된 세계를 시•지각으로 느끼며 눈에 보이는 현실세계와 가상세계 간의 긴장과 유희를 체험하게 된다. 이이남은 기술과 예술의 결합을 통해 과거와 현재를 매개하는 동시에 양자의 관계를 실천적, 지각적으로 변형시키고 자신만의 디지털 기술이 접목된 독창적인 미디어 아트를 구현한다.

한국미술의 찬란한 꽃을 피운 조선시대 회화 Painting of the Joseon Dynasty Leading to the Full Blossom of Korean Art During the Joseon dynasty, Korea preserved the tradition of Goryeo’s painting on the basis of Confucianism and adopted Chinese painting selectively, thus making the greatest achievements in Korean art history. The historical period was characterized by the high quality of paintings, calligraphic works, handicrafts and wooden architecture. In particular, what is notable during this period is the trend of Korean paintings that are independent and naturalistic with their modern sentiment and Confucian aesthetics.

An Gyeon, Jeong Seon and Kim Hongdo, painters representing the Joseon dynasty, are masters of Korean art who formed a basis for the development of Korean painting. All three of them developed their own characteristic Korean styles. In the early Joseon period, masterpieces like Mongyudowondo by An Gyeon were created to form a Korean painting style and to lay the foundation for the development of painting of later generations. After him, Jeong Seon and Kim Hongdo continued the painting tradition of the early Joseon dynasty and added new styles, thus developing styles characteristic of the middle Joseon period.

Mongyudowondo by An Gyeon is a painting that depicts Prince Anpyeong’s dream. The real world seen from a horizontal point of view and the precipice described as the godlike hermits’ world stand in contrast to each other as real and ideal landscapes. Geumgangjeondo by Jeong Seon depicts the panoramic view of Mount Geumgang.

This piece is meaningful because it is a real landscape painting which is realistic and unique; the artist painted Korea’s mountains and rivers in the Korean style. Mukjukdo by Kim Hongdo is the artist’s representative work that shows his mature strokes and bold use of the brush and ink with his insight as a man of letters. During this historical period, Korean art made the greatest achievements in East Asian art history by developing the unique characteristics of Korean painting and by greatly influencing contemporary painters, those of later generations and even the development of Japanese art.

조선시대는 유교를 기본으로 고려회화의 전통을 계승하고 중국회화를 선별적으로 수용하여 한국 미술 역사상 가장 찬란한 업적을 남긴 시기이다. 회화를 비롯한 서예, 공예, 목조 분야에서 수준 높은 격조가 두드러지며, 특히 근대적 정서와 유교적 미의식을 반영한 독자적이고 자연주의 성향이 강한 한국화 현상이 뚜렷이 나타난다. 조선시대를 관통하는 세 명의 화가인 안견, 정선, 김홍도는 한국회화 발전에 토대가 되는 뛰어난 거장들로 한국의 특색 있는 독자적 양식을 발전시킨 인물들이다. 조선초기에는 안견의 <몽유도원도>같은 걸작이 탄생하며 한국적 화풍을 성취하고 후대의 회화 발전의 토대가 되었으며, 이후 정선과 김홍도가 조선 초기 회화의 전통을 잇고 새로운 화풍을 가미하여 조선중기의 특유의 양식을 발달시켰다.

안견의 <몽유도원도>는 안평대군의 꿈을 그림으로 그린 것으로 수평시점의 현실세계와 선계로 묘사되는 절벽의 모습이 각각 현실경과 이상경으로 그려지며 대조를 이룬다. 금강산의 전경을 한 폭의 그림으로 담은 정선의 <금강전도>는 우리 산천을 우리 화법으로 그린 사실적이고 개성적인 실경(實景)산수화로서 그 의미가 남다르다. 김홍도의 <묵죽도>는 그의 문인적인 인식을 바탕으로 완숙한 필치와 과감한 필묵의 사용을 감상할 수 있는 대표적인 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 이 시대의 미술은 한국회화의 독자적 특성을 발전시키고 당대 및 후대 화가들을 비롯한 일본 미술발전에까지 지대한 영향을 미침으로써 동아시아 미술사상 가장 찬란한 업적을 이룬 시대라고 볼 수 있다.

한국 산수화의 큰 발전을 이룬 세종대를 대표하는 화가 안견(安堅)

An Gyeon, Painter Representing the Reign of King Sejong, a Period That Achieved Great Development in Korean Landscape Painting An Gyeon (?-?) is a painter representing the early Joseon dynasty. He worked for a painting center where artists painted national events as records and the royal family’s portraits. Working for the center, he belonged to a low social class but he earned favor from King Sejong and was appointed as a government official of the fourth rank, which was higher than the one that could be reached by an artist working for the center. In particular, he was close to Prince Anpyeong, King Sejong’s third son.

by Prince Anpyeong on April 20, 1447 (lunar calendar).

안견(생졸년 불분명)은 조선전기를 대표하는 화가로써 당시 국가 행사의 기록화나 왕실의 초상화를 그리는 도화원에 일했다. 신분이 낮은 화원출신임에도 불구하고 세종의 총애를 받으며 화원이 오를 수 있는 관직 이상인 정4품의 호군에 제수되기도 하였다. 특히 세종의 셋째 아들인 안평대군(安平大君)과 인연이 깊었으며 안견의 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 <몽유도원도>는 안평대군이 1447년 음력 4월 20일에 꾼 꿈을 그림으로 그린 것으로, 안견은 이를 3일 만에 작품으로 완성하였다. 꿈의 내용을 바탕으로 탄생한 <몽유도원도>는 왼편 하단부에서 오른편 상단부로 전개되는 사선구도의 형식을 갖으며 평원의 현실세계와 가파른 산줄기의

An Gyeon completed the work in just three days.

Based on the dream, Mongyudowondo has an oblique structure that starts from the lower part on the left and heads to the upper part on the right. The piece shows the real world on the plain, the godlike hermits’ unrealistic world on a steep mountain range and paradise where splendid red peach flowers are in full blossom. In other words, the geographical features of the mountain change depending on the different parts of the story. The piece describes the real world from a horizontal point of view. On the other hand, the precipice, which is described as the godlike hermits’ world, is seen from above. This leads to a contrast between real and ideal landscapes.

An Gyeon recreated Prince Anpyeong’s dream in this painting focused on where paradise is located. Meanwhile, the artist boldly omitted the people Prince Anpyeong saw in his dream (Pak Paengnyeon, Choe Hang, Sin Suk-ju and Prince Anpyeong), thus stressing the peacefulness and serenity of nature and showing an even more fantastic image of paradise. Like this, An Gyeon used an unprecedented painting style to be recognized as one of Joseon’s greatest contemporary painters. In this context, he greatly influenced the Japanese art scene during the Muromachi period.

안견은 안평대군의 꿈을 재현하여 도원의 장소성을 중심제재로 하여 그림을 그렸지만, 그가 말해준 꿈에 등장하는 인물들(박팽년, 최항, 신숙주, 안평대군)을 과감히 생략하여 대자연의 평온함과 고요함을 살려 더욱 환상적인 무릉도원의 이미지를 보여준다. 이와 같이 안견은 전례 없는 형식의 화법을 구사하며 당대에 가장 뛰어난 화가로 인정받으며 일본의 무로막치 막부 시기의 화단에도 큰 영향을 미친 것으로 알려진다.

Since 2012, she has addressed important painters of the Joseon dynasty, such as Jeong Seon, Kim Hongdo and Shin Yunbok, as well as traditional culture like ‘munbang’ and ‘chaekgeori’. She also explores traditional architectures like Gyujanggak in the Changdeokgung Palace.

Taking a Break from Reading, a self-portrait of Jeong Seon in his early fifties, is a rare example of genre painting describing a daily scene of an aristocrat-scholar. The bookcase filled with books suggests that the room is owned by a scholar, and a painting attached to the door of the bookcase shows it belongs to Jeong Seon. Among his best masterpieces are two exceptional True-view landscape paintings: Scene of Inwangsan Mountain After Rain (National Treasure No. 216) and Complete View of Geumgangsan Mountain (National Treasure No. 217). Jeong is regarded as a forward-looking painter and pioneer in the late Joseon art world.

조선시대 선비의 방, 문방(文房) A Candlestick to Illuminate One’s Mind and Sensibility

Joseon society was built upon Confucianism.

Confucian literati, known as ‘seonbi’, pursued their ideals of personal development by learning and practicing Confucianist philosophies. They studied, wrote, painted, and met with friends in their studies which were called ‘sarangbang’. In particular, the literati’s study was also called ‘munbang’. The contents of the room naturally implied a measure of the owner’s cultural refinement. Items in a munbang were called ‘munbang-jegu’, and the four essential items were ‘munbang-sau’: paper, brush, ink and inkstone. A munbang was normally furnished with writing desks [‘seoan’], inkstone cases [‘yeonsang’] and book selves [‘sabang-takja’]. Other small items like water droppers, paper holders, brush holders, floor lanterns and tea sets could be also found in the room. Munbang-jegu embodied the style of their owner and the spirit of seonbi, demonstrating that even small things were chosen with great care.

조선시대의 근간을 이룬 사상은 유교였으며 선비들은 인격완성을 위해 전통적인 유교의 학문적 너비와 깊이를 더하고자 힘썼다. 학문을 탐구하고 서화(書畵)를 즐기며, 손님과 담소를 나누는 사랑방을 선비들의 방인 문방(文房)이라 불렀고, 주인의 문화수준을 나타내는 다양한 문방제구(文房諸具)를 갖추게 되었다. 문방제구란 문방에 갖추어 두고 사용하는 모든 기물(器物)을 뜻하는 데 가장 기본적인 것이 문방사우(文房四友)-종이, 붓, 먹, 벼루-다. 가구류에는 책을 읽거나 글씨를 쓸때 사용하는 책상인 서안 (書案), 벼루를 놓아두는 연상(硯床), 책과 문방용품을 보관하는 사방탁자(四方卓子) 등이 있었다. 소품으로는 연적(硯滴), 지통(紙筒), 필통(筆筒), 조명기구인 좌등(座燈), 다구(茶具) 등의 기호용품이 있었다. 이러한 문방제구들은 작은 물건 하나에도 정성 과 멋을 담고 있는 선비정신과 안목을 보여준다.

성동훈 Sung, Dong Hun

Travelling through deserts and remote areas in Mongolia, India, China and elsewhere, Sung Dong Hun creates surrealistic and experimental figures, drawing inspiration from the nomadic life style as well as through artistic imagination. The artist’s experience, in combination with expressions acquired from foreign cultures, contributed to his characteristic portrayal of figures such as Don Quixote fighting against injustice and animals speaking on behalf of humans. A religious figure included in this exhibition is surely one result, rendering the artist’s exploration and reinterpretation of the spread of Buddhism which began in India and continued to Tibet, China, Korea, and Japan. Various cultural icons, their environment and the reality inherent in them are symbolically transformed into religious objects beyond time and space – statues of Buddha from India and China, and Korean bells.

They are also integrated into animal imageries and colors of Korean celadon. Celadon beads used in his work emit airy light, speaking for the enthusiasm of artisans and the artistic spirit which once drew breath in Korea, a long time ago. In a series of works entitled.

The New Case for Time, Sung unfolds his thoughts about yin and yang in harmony and the current time when nature and civilization, traditional and modern, reality and the surreal are mixed.

성동훈은 몽골, 인도, 중국 등의 사막이나 오지를 탐험하며 유목민적 삶과 예술적 상상력을 통해 초현실적이고 실험적인 캐릭터를 창조해왔다. 작가의 경험은 타문화의 표현양식과 결합하여 불의에 맞서는 돈키호테, 인간의 본질을 대변하는 동물의 형상으로 표현된다. 대표적으로 이번 전시의 작품 속에 등장하는 종교적 형상은 인도에서 시작되어 티베트, 중국, 한국, 일본으로 이어진 불교의 흐름을 작가만의 탐구와 성찰로 다시 해석된 직관적 결과물이다. 다양한 문화 아이콘과 그 환경 속에서 내재되어 있는 현실이 시공간을 초월한 각각의 다양한 종교적 오브제(인도 불상, 중국 불상, 한국의 종)와 동물 형상으로 상징화 되고 한국 전통의 청자 빛 속으로 스며들었다. 작품에 사용된 청자 구슬은 오래 전 한국의 땅에서 숨 쉬었던 예술의 혼과 장인들의 열정을 대변하며 은은한 빛을 발한다. 〈시간의 귀환〉 연작을 통해 작가는 음과 양의 조화, 자연과 문명, 전통과 현대, 현실과 초현실이 혼재된 현시대를 말하고자 한다.

아름다운 빛, 고려청자 Beautiful Color, Goryeo Celadon

Initially influenced by greenware techniques from Zhejiang, China, Goryeo celadon wares were first made in Korea in the 9th or 10th century during the Goryeo dynasty. The artisans of Goryeo reinterpreted these techniques according to local ideas of beauty and diversified designs and decorations accordingly. Thus, they achieved a highly distinctive quality in celadon. In particular, the exquisite jade color is a manifestation of the originality and aesthetic of Goryeo celadon. This enigmatic color, often considered to be that of a kingfisher’s feathers, perfectly combines shades of green and blue with a translucent quality. Taiping Laoren, a Chinese scholar from the Song dynasty, highly acclaimed the uniqueness of Goryeo celadon, describing “the secret color of celadon from Goryeo”, along with “flowers from Luoyang and silk from Shu” as “the first under heaven” in his book Xiuzhonggin .

Goryeo celadon wares were made in a variety of forms. The most common subjects are from nature such as ducks, melons and bamboo shoots as well as Buddhist motifs often representing Buddha and the lotus and Taoist themes such as a monkey with a peach and a phoenix. Various decorative techniques were applied including incised relief, shallow relief, inlay known as ‘sanggam’ and openwork.

Celadon wares were produced for everyday dishes, incense burners, ritual vessels and roof tiles. The development of a new style of these wares shaped as animals and plants brought Goryeo celadon to the peak of its popularity. Goryeo celadon had demonstrated the advanced science and technology, the level of culture and the artistic spirit of that period in Korea but its production declined towards the end of the Goryeo dynasty (late 14th century).

The tradition passed to Buncheong ware which was simultaneously beginning to be produced across the country.

고려청자는 고려시대(9-10세기 경) 중국 절강성의 도자 제작기술의 영향을 받아 최초로 제작되었으나, 고려인의 미의식을 바탕으로 재해석되고 무늬와 장식기법이 다채로워지면서 독보적으로 발전했다. 무엇보다 고려청자의 비색은 기법과 더불어 고려청자의 독창성과 아름다움을 가장 잘 보여준다. 비색(翡色)은 물총새의 깃털 색이라 해석되는데, 녹색빛과 푸른빛 그리고 투명함이 절묘하게 공존하는 색의 스펙트럼이다. 중국 송나라의 태평노인(太平老人)은 시 〈수중금(袖中錦)〉에서 “낙양의 꽃, 촉 지방의 비단,… 고려 비색…은 모두 천하제일이다.”라고 언급하며 고려청자의 특출함을 칭송했다. 고려 상형청자는 원앙, 참외, 오리, 죽순 등의 자연적 소재와 불상, 연꽃 등 불교적 소재, 그리고 복숭아를 든 원숭이, 봉황 등 도교적 소재가 주로 사용되었다. 형태는 음각, 양각, 상감, 투각 등 다양한 장식기법을 사용하였다. 일상생활 그릇을 비롯한 향로, 제기, 기와, 타일 등을 제작됐으며, 동식물의 모습을 그대로 살리는 상형청자가 만들어지며 절정기를 맞이한다. 한국인의 높은 과학기술과 문화적 역량, 예술혼이 고스란히 담겨 있는 고려청자는 고려 후기(14세기 말) 전국 각지에서 만들어진 분청사기로 그 전통이 계승되며 쇠퇴의 길을 걷는다.

백성에게 전하는 소리, 에밀레종 The Sound Gifted to People, Emille Bell

The Divine Bell of King Seongdeok the Great, known as the Emille Bell1), is a magnificent temple bell which epitomizes artistic quality in the golden age of Unified Silla. The largest bell in Korea, it was commissioned by King Gyeongdeok, the 35th king of Silla, to honor his father, and completed in the 7th year of the King Hyegong’s reign (771 CE). At the top of the bell, the ornamentation of the suspension loop is in the shape of dragon bending its neck and trying to grasp the bell with its mouth, and clinging powerfully with its legs. The shoulder, ‘yugwak’2), ‘dangjwa’3) and the mouth – part of the body of the bell – are adorned with ‘bosangdangcho’ motifs4), lotus flowers, and Buddhist nymphs. There is also an inscription of 1,037 Chinese letters symmetrically written on the body, which claims that hearing the bell ring brings freedom from suffering, good fortune, and enlightenment and thus, with this gift, King Seongdeok will live in heaven. This Divine Bell was built using the scientific techniques of Korean traditional bell making. The beeswax casting method is complicated and requires a high degree of skill and a long production time. However, its ability to attain delicate designs, smooth and elegant surfaces and stunning sounds is incomparable. Its use had been discontinued after the Joseon dynasty. Then, Won Gwang Sik, a master artisan of bronze casting (Living National Treasure No. 112), after more than ten years of investigation, eventually recreated this traditional method in 1997.

에밀레종으로 알려진 성덕대왕신종은 한국에 남아있는 최대의 거종으로 통일신라시대 극성기 예술을 대표하는 화려한 범종1)이다. 성덕대왕을 기리기 위하여 신라 제35대 왕인 경덕왕(景德王)이 제작을 시작하였고, 그 아들인 혜공왕 7년(771년)에 완성되었다. 종의 정상에는 한 마리 용이 목을 구부리고 입을 벌려 마치 종을 물어 올리는 형상을 취하고 양다리는 종의 천판(天板)을 힘차게 누르고 있다. 몸체인 상대, 유곽(乳廓), 당좌(撞座), 하대는 보상당초문(寶相唐草文), 연꽃, 공양천인상으로 장식되어 있다. 또한 1,037자의 글이 대칭으로 새겨져 있으며, 종소리를 들으면 백성들이 괴로움에서 벗어나, 복을 받게 되며 진리를 깨달아 그 공덕으로 성덕대왕이 극락에 편히 계시게 된다는 내용을 담고 있다. 성덕대왕신종은 한국의 과학적인 전통주종공법을 보여주는 작품이기도 하다. 전통 밀랍주조 공법은 공정이 복잡할 뿐만 아니라 고도의 기술을 필요로 하기 때문에 많은 제작기간이 소요된다. 타공법과는 비교할 수 없는 섬세한 문양과 깨끗한 표면, 그리고 아름다운 소리를 얻을 수 있다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 조선시대 이후 그 맥이 단절되었던 것을 성종사 원광식 대표(인간문화재 제112호)가 10여 년간의 연구 끝에 1997년 재현에 성공하여 명맥을 이어오고 있다.

선조의 발명 – 한글과 한지 Inventions of Our Ancestors – Hangeul and Hanji 강운 양대원

한글은 창제 원리와 과정이 기록되어 있는 유일한 언어다. 조선 4대왕 세종대왕은 우리말과 한자가 달라 사용하기 어려운 백성들의 고충을 헤아려 1443년 한글을 완성하고 ‘백성을 가르치는 올바른 소리’라는 뜻의 훈민정음(訓民正音)이라고 이름 붙였다. 이후 한글 창제목적과 설명을 담은 ‘훈민정음해례본(訓民正音解例本)’을 편찬하고 목판으로 제작하여 한국의 고유한 종이인 한지(韓紙)에 인쇄하였는데, 한지 또한 선조들이 남긴 우수한 유형문화유산 중 하나다. ‘지천년견오백(紙一千年絹五百)’이라는 말처럼, 한지는 밀도가 높고 매우 견고한 특징을 가지고 있다. 강운은 작은 한지 조각을 수없이 중첩해 나가면서 공기의 흐름과 겹을 담은 구름의 형상을 만든다. 삶과 죽음이 순환하는 인생의 모습을 소멸과 탄생이 반복되는 자연의 모습에 투영하여 삶에 대한 본질적인 질문을 던진다. 양대원의 〈문자도〉 연작은 한글의 형태 연구를 바탕으로 한 새로운 조형미를 만나볼 수 있으며, 우리가 과연 문자의 진정한 의미를 실행하며 살아가고 있는지 되돌아보게 한다.

Kang, Un Yang, Dae Won

Hangeul is the only writing system for which the principles and process of its creation have been clearly documented. It was completed in 1443

by King Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty. At that time Chinese characters were used to write Korean. The king understood that commoners were struggling due to ultimate differences in structure between the Korean and Chinese languages. Sejong gave the name Hunminjeongeum to this new writing system which means “proper sounds to instruct the people”. He then compiled the Harae edition of Hunminjeongeum which details the development and the Harae (Commentaries), later explanations of Hangeul. This edition was printed from woodblock on hanji, which literally means Korean paper. Hanji is one of the exceptional tangible cultural heritages gifted by our ancestors. There is an old saying that paper endures a thousand years and fabric endures five hundred.

In other words, hanji is famous for its durability and strength. Kang Un depicts clouds which evoke the flow and layers of the air by superimposing countless fragments of Korean traditional paper. He asks fundamental questions about life by projecting aspects of human life — and death onto the cycle of birth and extinction that is nature. Yang Dae Won’s Munjado (literally “letter drawing”) series brings in a new aesthetic based on his research into formal aspects of Hangeul. The viewer is invited to ruminate on the true meaning of each letter represented in the series, and to ruminate on their individual lives.

‘구름’ 연작으로 알려진 강운은 삶과 죽음이 순환하는

Known for a series of works with the theme of ‘clouds’, Kang Un portrays human life using metaphors of natural phenomena in which the cycle of birth and death recurs. One day, the artist came across some Korean paper by chance in a custom picture-framing shop. Since then he has conducted a variety of experiments with hanji as the medium: this is native Korean paper which traces its history back over a thousand years. In the Air and Dream series, he depicts clouds by superimposing diamond or square shaped fragments of dyed hanji on untreated canvas. Kang captures the flow and layers of the air, persistently repeating the process of scattering, layering and overlaying bits of hanji.

The paper’s durability, softness in particular when wet, and variety in coloration enable the artist to try a number of variations. He endeavours to lessen daily anxiety and embrace nature through prayer and performance during which he cuts out and attaches each tiny thin piece of hanji.

인생사를 소멸과 탄생이 반복하는 자연현상에 빗대어 표현하고자 한다. 강운은 우연히 표구사를 지나다가 한지(韓紙)를 마주하게 된 이후 천 년이 넘는 역사를 가지고 있는 한국의 고유한 종이인 한지를 이용해 다양한 매체실험을 하고 있다. 〈공기와 꿈〉연작에서는 염색 한지를 코팅되지 않은 캔버스 위에 붙이고 마름모, 정사각형 모양의 한지 조각을 중첩해 나가면서 구름의 형상을 만든다. 한지 조각들은 흩어지고, 겹쳐지고, 포개지는 과정을 수없이 반복하며 공기의 흐름과 겹을 담아낸다. 한지의 견고성, 물과 닿으면 부드러워지는 유연성, 색을 입히면 변하는 다양성을 바탕으로 변주를 시도한다. 작고 얇은 한지 조각을 오리고 붙이는 수행과 기도의 과정을 통해 일상의 고뇌를 덜어내고 자연을 끌어안으려 한다.

“우리가 눈으로 구름을 볼 때는 마치 솜 같은 형태로 보이죠. 하지만 실상은 끊임없는 순환 구조의 반복으로 이뤄지고 있어요. 땅을 적신 비가 흘러 개울, 강, 바다로 가죠. 작은 물방울들이 증발해서 하늘 위에서 끊임없이 순환하며 구름을 이뤄요. 물방울들은 다시 비의 형태로 땅에 내려오죠. 이 순환 구조에서 삶과 죽음이 계속해서 이뤄지는 우리네 인생사를 느꼈어요. 청년기에 마주한 구름이 마음에 품은 꿈과 방랑이었다면, 장년기의 구름은 인간이라는 미약한 존재로서의 고백과 겸손입니다.”

“Clouds might look like cotton candy to our eyes. But they are, in reality, produced through endless circulation. Rains wet the earth then run into a stream, river, and sea. Small water droplets evaporate, and condense into clouds. Water falls back down to earth again in the form of precipitation. This circulation brings to mind the path of human life in which birth and death continually occur. If a cloud encountered in youth tells of dreaming and wandering, a cloud met in manhood tells of confession and humility in an insubstantial human being.”

From cradle to grave, Koreans have lived with hanji.

They fixed hanji on a straw rope which was used to announce a birth, and to exchange letters prior to a wedding. The family of the groom would send a letter to the family of the bride with the horoscope of the groom, known as ‘sajudanja’, and another letter, known as ‘honseo’, along with wedding gifts. When someone died, Koreans cleaned and dressed the deceased with hanji and spread fake money made of hanji during the funeral procession. Hanji was mainly used for painting and writing, and later its use was extended to various hanji crafts ranging from artistic objects for royalty to everyday objects in common use. Today hanji is popular not only in the art world but also in many other industries such as fashion and architecture, drawing attention to its breathability, moisture absorption and antimicrobial properties as an eco-friendly material.

Hanji is traditional Korean paper produced through unique ways of papermaking using a bamboo screen.

Since its main material is from the paper mulberry tree, known as the ‘dak’ tree, it is often called dak paper. It has many other names such as ‘changhoji’, ‘ganji’, and ‘baejeopji’ depending on its use. As its strength and exceptionally fine quality was recognized in neighbouring countries, hanji was also known as the paper of Goryeo and later of Joseon. In Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) there is a record of a Goguryeo monk teaching crafts and the making of paper and ink in Japan around 610, suggesting that papermaking had already spread throughout the Korean peninsula. The Great Dharani Sutra, the oldest woodblock print in the world, which is believed to be 1200 years old, is exemplary in demonstrating hanji’s high durability and density and therefore its excellence as a significant cultural legacy.

한지(韓紙)는 ‘외발’이라는 도구를 이용해서 뜨는 한국 고 유의 제조법으로 만든 전통 종이다. 닥나무를 원료로 사 용 하여 닥종이, 닥지로 불리거나 용도에 따라 창호지, 간 지, 배접지 등으로 불렀다. 인접국가에서 견고하고 뛰어난 품질을 인정받으며 고려지, 조선지로 불리기도 했다. 『일 본서기』에 610년경 고구려 승려 담징이 일본에 건너가 종 이, 먹, 공예 등을 만드는 법을 가르쳤다고 하는 기록이 남 아있으며 그 이전에 제지법이 일반화 되어 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 세계에서 가장 오래된 목판 인쇄물인 『무구정광대 다라니경(無垢淨光大陀羅尼經)』은 약 1200년이 지났지 만 종이의 밀도가 높고 견고하여 한지의 우수성을 잘 보여 주는 중요한 문화유산이다.

한지로 만든 종이 돈을 뿌려주기도 했다. 과거에는 그림과 글씨를 쓰기 위한 용도부터 궁중에서 쓰던 지장 공예품, 서민들이 사용하던 생활용품까지 다양한 한지공예가 발전해 왔고, 오늘날에는 예술분야뿐만 아니라 통풍, 방습, 항균 작용이 뛰어난 친환경적 특성이 주목 받으며 의류, 건축 등 다양한 산업분야에서 활용되고 있다.

양대원 Yang, Dae Won

Yang Dae Won has extended his scope from dwelling on his identity to society and nation, to include human suffering from wars, and poverty.

He approaches memories and circumstances with sympathy and understanding. The artist has invented his own unique form embodying moderate shapes and colors, finishing so fine as to be close to perfection, and the minimal and symbolic expression of abstract painting. The Munjado series began with Yang’s inner reflection that every misfortune is caused by words. He surveyed scientific principles in the creation of Hangeul and the script’s aesthetic quality and found original beauty in the shapes of different consonants and vowels of Hangeul. Yang’s translation of a writing system into visual language suggests the multiplicity of meanings that a word can deliver.

양대원은 자신의 정체성에 대한 고민으로부터 사회와 국가, 인류가 겪고 있는 전쟁, 빈곤 등 역사적 문제로 의식의 범위를 확장해오고 있다. 작가는 과거의 모든 기억과 사건들을 연민과 이해의 태도로서 접근하며 눈물과 글자의 형상으로 표현한다. 절제된 형태와 색감, 완벽에 가까운 마감으로 추상회화의 단순하고 상징적인 표현을 담고 있으면서도 작가만의 독창적인 형상을 만들어 냈다. 〈문자도〉 연작은 모든 불행은 언어에서 비롯된다는 작가의 내면 성찰에서 시작되었다. 양대원은 한글의 과학적인 원리와 조형성을 탐구한 후 한글의 자음과 모음의 형태에서 고유한 추상적 아름다움을 발견했다. 그리고 그 형상을 다양하게 조합하고 조형적으로 구현했다. 문자로 전해 내려오는 역사와 법에 대해 의구심을 갖는 작가는 가슴으로 듣는 사람들의 이야기에 귀 기울이고자 한다. 관람객들에게 우리가 과연 문자(언어)의 진정한 의미를 실행하며 살아가고 있는지 질문을 던진다.

“개인적으로는 ‘이별’과 ‘시련’과 같은 아픈 사랑의 추억, 사회적으로는 ‘빈부의 격차’와 같은 사회 문제, 국가적으로는 ‘전쟁의 아픔’ 등 과거의 모든 기억과 사건들을 눈물의 형상과 글자의 형상을 조합해 조형적으로 표현했습니다. 과거의 들추고 싶지 않은 기억과 시간을 다시 한 번 되돌아보는 계기가 돼 눈물로 상징화된 아픔들이 다시는 반복되지 않기를 바랍니다.”

“Hurt experienced on a personal level through a relationship, for example parting from a loved one; on a social level, the gap between the poor and the rich; on a national level, the suffering in war. I represent these memories and circumstances in a variety of visual expressions combining tears and letters. I hope to provide an opportunity to look back on the past, even though it hurts. The miseries that I symbolize as tears should not happen again.”

조선4대 왕 세종(1418-1450)은 1443년, 말하고자 하는

한글은 소리를 발음하는 원리와 철학을 바탕으로 만든

King Sejong the Great (1418-1450) invented Hangeul, “proper sounds to instruct people” for the many commoners who could not communicate in writing.

The Haerae edition of Hunminjeongeum, made of 33 leaves and printed from woodblocks, explains in detail the purposes and the origin of Hangeul. It includes how to pronounce and use 28 alphabetic letters from Hangeul. The commentaries were written by scholars from the Hall of Worthies, known as Jiphyeonjeon, on Sejong’s order. It took 3 years to complete this book. Hunminjeongeum is a unique example of a writing system whose development has been fully documented in a book, including by whom, when, and how it was invented. There is only one in existence. Registered as a ‘Memory of the World’ by UNESCO, it is highly regarded and recognized to be an important piece of international cultural heritage.

바가 있어도 제 뜻을 펼 수 없는 많은 백성들을 위해 ‘백성 을 가르치는 바른 소리’인 한글을 만들었다. 『훈민정음해 례본(訓民正音解例本)』은 33장의 목판본으로 28자의 각 각의 소리와 쓰는 방법 등 한글의 창제 원리를 상세하게 기록한 것이다. 세종대왕의 명으로 집현전 학자들에 의해 해설서의 편찬이 시작되었으며 3년이 걸려 완성되었다. 전 세계 문자 중에 제작자, 제작시기, 제작원리 등의 모든 기록이 책으로 남아있는 것은 훈민정음이 유일하다. 유네 스코 세계 기록 유산으로 등재되어 세계인류 문화유산으 로 중요하게 평가 받고 있다.

Hangeul is a scientifically created script established on principles and philosophies around phonetics.

Currently, Hangeul has 24 alphabetical letters including 14 consonants and 10 vowels, however it had 28 letters in the beginning. The early Hunminjeongeum had 4 more letters: ‘∙’ (vowel, under-‘ah’), ‘ㆆ’ (consonant, weak-sound ‘heeut’), ‘△’ (consonant, half ‘siot’), ‘ㆁ’ (consonant, old ‘ieung’).
