아침 아직 어둠이 가시지 않은 거실에 긴 탁자가 어스름 속에 누워 있다. 그 위로 긴 밤을 지센 사물들이 하나 둘씩 물끄러미 눈을 뜨고 의자에 걸친 스웨터가 아직 졸고 있다. 불을 켜면 하얗게 놀랜 사물들이 어디론가 사라진다. 텅 빈 탁자에 사과와 잼과 토스트가 올려 지면 사물들이 하나씩 제자리로 돌아가 앉는다. 창밖으론 밤새 지키고 있던 불빛들이 어디론가 사라지고 있다. 포크, 스푼, 커피로스팅의 부산한 소리들, 지금은 다시 깊은 정적속에 문득 문득 신문넘기는 소리가 이 고요를 증폭시키고 있다. 어느새 먹다 남은 빵과 식기들 사이로 탁자위에 흐르는 물결위에 배 한척이 노를 젖고 있다. 다시 찬란한 아침을 맞고 있는 것이다.

신문 식사를 마치면 나는 신문속으로 들어간다. 매일 매일의 글자들이 아침의 정적을 꾸역 꾸역 채워 넣고 있는 것이다. 오늘은 신문을 드는 순간 백지를 들고 있다. 탁자에 글자들이 우수수 떨어진 것이다. 트럼•코로•영업•소상공인•사교•양극•노동 고발•고용•방호•사법•주거•바이•푸틴• 맹신 ••••

경계선 나는 간혹, 아직 아물지 않은 몸의 한 구석을 자각이라도 하듯이 불현듯 내가 태어나기 전부터 존재하고 있었던 남과 북의 경계지점에 서 있곤 했다. 세상 어디에도 없을 것 같은, 마치 회화의 끝에서나 만날 것 같은 이 세계. 그 곳엔 철책사이로 끊임없이 굴절되어 무너지고 있는 파도의 아우성들이 있고, 먼지처럼 긴 시간을 감내하고 있는 어딘가 마모되고 있는 반쪽 사물들이 나를 바라보고 있다. 이것이 무엇인가? 새삼 던지는 이 질문은 한동안 나의 그림 안으로 들어오길 원했다. 그것은 그림에 대한 윤리적이거나 소명의식에 대한반응이라기 보다는 이 질문은 어쩌면 우리 삶의 깊숙한 부분에서 이미 의식과 무의식 사이에서 문득 문득 실존의 한 형식이었음을 깨닫곤 하기 때문이다.

Morning In a living room where darkness remains, a long table lies in the daybreak.

One by one, objects which have stayed up through the long night slowly opens their eyes, with sweater hung over a chair still dozing.

As lights turn on, white with surprise, objects disappears into nowhere, on the empty table, when apple, jam, and toast is laid out, objects return one by one, back to their positions.

Outside the window, lights which guarded the night are disappearing.

The bustling sounds of fork, spoon, coffee roasting, then once again in a deep stillness, sounds of turning pages of newspaper amplifies the silence.

Amongst the half-eaten bread and cutleries, a boat sails its way on a flowing stream on the table.

Once again, all welcome a bright morning.

Newspaper After finishing a meal, I go into the newspapers.

Words of everyday life fill up the morning silence.

Today as I open the newspapers, I see a blank paper.

Words have rumbled down on to the table.

Border line Sometimes I, as if I had recognized a corner of my body where it is yet healed, have stood on the borders of South and North which existed before my birth.

An impossible place, the world which may only exist in the very end of a painting.

There echo the cries of waves continuously bent between the barrier fence, breaking down enduring long time like a dust, being worn away, half objects are watching me.

What is this?

The question I abruptly ask has awaited to enter my paintings for a while.

It is not a reaction to ethics or a calling towards painting, but this question, perhaps by a chance, had been a form of existence, deep within our lives, already in between the conscious and unconscious.

Interview with the curator of the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art : Artist Yoo Geun Taek

1. 지난 2009년에 사비나미술관 전시 후 11년 만에 전시를 갖게 되어서 뜻 깊습니다. 그리고 2017년 개인전 이후 3년 만에 하시는 전시이죠? 이번 전시의 제목을 ‘시간의 피부-Layered Time’라고 했는데 어떤 내용인가요? 그동안 제가 작업을 해오면서 내가 서 있는 땅을 포 함해 우리가 마주하고 있는 시간들에 대한 미학에 대단히 흥미를 갖고 있었던 것 같아요. 물론 이런 지 점들은 이전 전시에서도 단편적으로는 중요한 부분 을 차지하고 있었지만 3년 전 갤러리현대 전시 이후 사회적, 정치적인 격변의 시기와 특히 세계적인 팬 데믹을 거치면서 내가 혹은 우리가 감내하고 있었 던 시간과 공간들을 좀 더 내 화면, 혹은 이 전시 속 으로 끌고 와야겠다는 생각을 했어요. 그래선지 작 업의 시선을 안으로부터 좀 더 바깥으로 시선을 옮 기면서 땅이라는 대상과 시간에 대한 키워드를 조금 더 이끌어내게 되었습니다. 이번 전시의 타이틀을 ‘시간의 피부’로 정하게 된 것도 결국 우리가 감내하 고 있는 시간들에 대한 단층들을 들춰냄으로서 어떤 우리 시간에 대한 성찰을 이끌어 내고자 하는 의도 를 함축하고 있습니다.

1. It has been eleven years since your last exhibition at the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art in 2009. We are very honored to present your works once again at the museum. I believe it has been three years since your last solo exhibition in 2017?

Entitled ‘Layered Time’ - what is this exhibition about?

In my practice I have had interest in the aesthetics of the land we stand on, as well as the time we face. Of course, such points were an important element in my past exhibitions, however after my last exhibition at Gallery Hyundai three years back, going through the social and political changes, along with the pandemic which affected the world, I have wanted to bring the time and space which I or we were enduring in to the canvas, and into this exhibition. Therefore, I have put focus on my point of view from inside to outside, and have sought to dig up keywords of ‘land’ and ‘time.’

I have set the title of this exhibition as ‘layered time,’ which is a connotation of the efforts to bring some sort of introspection on our time, by opening up the layers of time which we are enduring.

2. 작가님의 작품은 일상에서 일어나는 평범한, 어 찌 보면 소소한 사건이나 장면이라고도 할 수 있 는 소재에서 강렬한 에너지를 이끌어내는 것 같 아요. 그 일상이 최근엔 위에 말씀하셨듯이 범상 치 않은 사건들이 많아 더욱 특별하셨을 것 같은 데 이번 전시는 이전 전시에 비해 어떠한 변화가 있을까요?

2. Your works seem to draw up powerful energy from everyday life, from a somewhat trivial event or a scene. With unusual events, everyday life may have been more special to you recently. Is there a difference to everyday life portrayed in this exhibition compared to your previous works?

조금 더 범주가 넓어졌다고 볼 수가 있겠지요. 어떤 서사의 구조를 그림 안으로 끌어들이고 싶었다고 할 까요. 전에 했던 작업들도 단지 사적인 영역을 다루 기보다는 일상과 세계가 교차하거나 거시적인 담론 과 미시적인 담론이 교차하는 지점에 초점을 맞추고 있었다고 생각해요. 그러나 이번 작업은 조금 더 시 간의 격변을 더 격렬하게 받고 있는 상황이었기 때

3. 이번 전시에는 유독 눈에 띠는 연작들이 있습니 다. 특히 <The Time> 연작은 신문이 타들어가는 시간성을 기록한 듯 보이는데요. 재로 남아버린 신문 형상이 인상적입니다.

3. In this exhibition, there are a series of works which catch one’s eyes. The Time series seem to record temporality through the burning newspaper. The presentation of newspapers in ashes is very striking.

저는 내가 봤던 장소를 계속 관찰하는 것을 좋아합 니다. 그래서 인지 연속선상 위에 연작의 개념으로 완성된 작업들이 꽤 있지요. 하나의 사물에 대해서 이야기하면 그 사물에서 파생된 여러 다른 이야기들 을 발견하기도 하고 또한 프리즘처럼 계속적인 생성 을 통해 확대되고 극대화되는 것입니다. 이러한 부 분을 저는 매력적이라고 생각합니다. 그런 면에서 이번에 발표하는 ‘The Time’ 시리즈 작업은 흥미로 웠던 시도였다고 생각해요. 작년에 프랑스 노르망 디지역의 레지던시에 참여하는 시기가 공교롭게도 한국에서는 대구 신천지 사태 등으로 인해 코로나 가 한참 심할 때 출발해야 했고, 파리는 비교적 안전 한 지대로 인식되는 곳이었어요. 그러데 도착해 보 니 프랑스의 코로나가 확산되고 악화되는 속도가 엄 청나더라고요. 30명이 채 안되던 확진자가 도착해서 10일이 채 안되어 3000명 가까이 확진되고, 12일 정 도 되니 5,000명까지 늘어나더군요. 레지던시에 도 착하자마자 통행 금지령이 내려질 정도였습니다. 먼 외지에서의 그런 불안감은 어떤 출구 없는 절대적 불안을 느끼게 하더군요. 이 가운데 내가 할 수 있 는 것은 작업뿐이었어요. 그 당시 한국에서 대구 신 천지를 보도했던 신문을 가지고 갔었는데 작업실에 서 이를 태우기 시작했습니다. 불안 때문인지 뭔가 집중해야 하는 대상이 필요했는지도 몰라요. 하지만 신문이 타는 그림을 그리면서 느낀 것은 대단히 흥 미로운 조형적 부분을 발견하게 된다는 거였어요. 연일 놀라운 사건들로 얼룩진 신문이 타들어가는 것 과 팬데믹의 상황이 오버랩되는 다의적 코드도 흥미 로웠지만 신문이 타면서 나오는 재를 그리다 보니 그 표정이 놀랍더군요. 마치 이름모를 뼈들같기도 하고, 어떤 기괴한 형태의 사물들 같기도 하고... 평 소에는 무심하게 보였을 것들이 그림을 그리다보니 드라마틱하게 다가온 것입니다. 커다란 의미가 있어 서라기보다는 그림 자체가 흥미로워진 것입니다. 그 렇게 해서 프랑스에서 3점을 완성하였고 귀국 후 4 점을 더 그려 연작 7점을 완성하게 되었습니다. 시계

I like to make continuous observation of acquainted places. It may be the reason I have completed works of continued series. When I speak about one object, I find various stories which derived from that object, which expand and maximize through continued formation, just like a prism. I find such characters interesting. In that sense, it was an interesting attempt to deliver The Time series. Last year, I participated in the residency in Normandy, France, when Korea was going through the crisis of COVID-19 due to mass coronavirus outbreak at Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Daegu, whereas at the time Paris was considered a safe zone. However, when I arrived in Paris, the coronavirus was spreading rapidly in France, with fatalities rising. Numbers of confirmed cases went from thirty to three thousand, just after ten days I had landed in France. After twelve days the numbers rose up to five thousand. As soon as I arrived at the residency, curfew orders were issued. Being anxious in a land far away from home, I felt an absolute anxiety which I could not run away from. All I could do was work. At the time, I had brought a newspaper from Korea that reported on the coronavirus outbreaks of Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Daegu, which I started burning in my studio. Because of anxiety, I needed something to focus on. However, by drawing the burning newspaper, I made interesting discovery of forms. I liked the polysemous codes which derived from how the situation of the pandemic and the newspaperfilled with surprising events of the day- overlapped, but what I found most interest was the expressions which the forms of newspaper ashes took. Resembling unidentified bones, or some sort of monstrous object…

Something which I would have paid little attention to, became dramatic as I drew it. It was not a big significance that made the changes, but the drawing itself got interesting. I finished three pieces in France, 49

방향으로 타들어가듯이 시간이 가진 절대적 운명성, 시간이 가진 극적인 순간의 연속성을 드러내는 것이 흥미로웠습니다. 다른 작업들도 마찬가지입니다. 여 기 출품하는 ‘당신의 마음’ 연작이나 ‘끝에 서 있는’ 자화상도 연속적으로 완성하면서 화면의 리듬이 교 묘하게 읽히는 상황이 연출된 것입니다.

4. 불에 태우는 이미지는 이전 작업에서도 보여주 셨는데 일반적으로 태우는 것은 사라지고 소멸 되는 것 이라는 의미로 받아들이잖아요. 말씀을 듣고 보니 새삼 불에 대한 새로운 시각을 갖게 되어 매우 흥미로운데요, 언제부터 불에 대한 작 업을 하셨나요? 아침에 신문을 받아보게 되면 가끔 대단히 놀라운 뉴스들과 만나잖아요. 그럴 때보면 글자에서 불이 나 는 듯 한 느낌을 받을 때가 있어요. 간혹 우리는 아 주 평범한 일상 속에서 이와 같은 일들과 함께 살아 가고 있다는 것이지요. 그러고 보니 불은 이번 전시 에서 서로 다른 개념으로 종종 등장하게 되었습니다. 불은 초기에 모필 소묘로 ‘들불’을 그리긴 했지만 본 격적으로 회화적인 완성을 본 계기는 2000년에 어 머니 돌아가신 후 옷들을 태울 때 나타났던 연기와 불을 힘들게 작업하여 발표하면서 처음 저의 작업으 로 들어왔습니다. 이후로도 종종 쓰이고 있습니다.

5. <바다> 연작도 이번 전시에 중요한 작품 중 하나 인데요. 이전에 작가님께서 여행에서 촬영한 수 없이 많은 바다 영상을 본적이 있습니다. 전시에 등장하는 바다 연작은 철책과 만찬과 일상의 오 브제가 교차하면서 소용돌이치는 것으로 읽히는 데요. 현실에서 경험한 바다에 어떤 시대상이 담 겨 있는 건가요? 이번 작업엔 유독 바다가 많이 보입니다. 누구나 그 렇겠지만 바다를 통해서 어떤 사람은 치유를 받기도 하고 누군가는 여러 자신의 감정을 되돌아보기도 합 니다. 가끔 바다에서 불어오는 에너지와 바람, 기운 들이 굉장히 추상적인 힘을 느끼게 합니다. 새로운 기운이 다가오는 것 같기도 하고 내 피부에 부딪히 는 공기의 힘들이 굉장히 추상적이면서도 구체적인 느낌으로 다가오는 경우가 있습니다. 이는 ‘당신의 마음’이란 연작의 형태로 발표할 예정입니다. ‘어떤 50

and have worked on four more pieces back home to complete the series of seven pieces. Burning clockwise, it portrayed the absolute destiny and the seriality of the dramatic moment which the time holds. It is the same with other works. Your Mind series, or the self-portrait Standing at The Edge series in this exhibition has been finished in sequence, in which one can read a subtle rhythm of the screens.

4. Images of burning have also existed in your previous works. Generally, when something is burnt, it disappears and ceases to exist. It is interesting to have a new perspective on fire, when did you start working with fires in your practice?

When you see a newspaper in the morning sometime you are met with very shocking news. At such times I feel like the words are on fire. Amongst our plain daily life, we are also living with such events. Therefore, Fire has appeared in this exhibition as various concepts.

In my early days I have drawn Wildfire, however I have brought fire into my practice after my mother’s death in 2000, when I worked on the fire and smoke which occurred whilst burning my mother’s clothes. It is now often used within my practice.

5. There are ebb and flood in your series depicting sea, as well as the drawings. I have seen the video of countless seas you have filmed. The sea in this exhibition seems to be whirling with the barrier fence, dinner, and daily life intersecting, what spirits of time do you wish to present in the sea you have experienced in real life?

There are many seas in this exhibition. As for everyone, through the sea, some people are healed, and others look back on their feelings. There is abstract power in the energy, wind and vitality that blow from the sea.

Like a novel energy approaching, the forces of air hitting my skin felt very abstract yet concrete. It will be presented in the series entitled Your Heart. In Some Dinner, Dinner is set like an ironic and dramatic theater

만찬’에서는 만찬이 가진 아이러니한, 극적인 연극 무대처럼 설정함으로서 우리 시대의 정치적인 게임, 화해의 장소지만 어딘지 모르게 페이소스적인 정서 가 있다고 해야 할까? 여러 감정들이 안에서 움직이 고 있는 ‘만찬’이라는 장소가 언제고 새로운 기운이 몰려올 것 같은 바다를 배경으로 펼쳐지고 있습니 다. 또 다른 경우에는 ‘분홍 파도’가 일직선으로 오다 가 철책에 의해 굴절되어 무너지는 것 같은 방식으 로 작업하기도 했습니다.

6. 이번에는 땅에 대한 이야기를 해주시겠어요? 황 무지 같은 벌판 작품 <어떤 땅>과 거친 풀이 우 거진 작업 <생.장>은 모두 버려진 땅의 형태로 닮아 보이면서도 상반되어 보이는데요. 어떤 작 품인가요? 제가 땅이라고 하는 테마를 그려야 되겠다고 생각했 던 것은 예전부터 생각해오던 테마였어요. 이를테면 갑자기 멀쩡한 산이 어느 날 갑자기 포크레인에 의 해서 파헤쳐지고 아파트가 만들어지는 등 놀라운 광 경을 우리는 아무렇지도 않게 흔히 주변에서 볼 수 있는 풍경이예요. 이처럼 폭력적이고 놀라운 회화가 어디 있을까요? 경기도 어느 지역을 운전하다 차를 세우고 그런 광경에 대한 드로잉을 많이 했습니다. 문제는 이를 작업화 한다는 것이 얼마나 어려운 일 인가를 그리며 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 이를테면 새삼 무참히 자연을 훼손시키는 인간의 폭력성을 말하려 는 것이 아니었고 제가 궁극적으로 표현하고 싶었던 것은 그 ‘놀라움’과 ‘새로움’의 에너지였습니다. 드로잉은 많이 했지만 완성된 작업이 없었지요. 그 와중에 한반도에 일어난 여러 격변들을 목격하면서 그런 상황들이, 또는 그런 언어들이 나의 작업으로 들어오면서 완성하게 된 것입니다. 노란 땅인 배경 자체는 경기도 어딘가의 파헤쳐진 땅이었으나 그 텅 빈 땅에 38선의 경계선이 보이지 않는 도상처럼 끼 워 넣어 낯선 아이러니를 만들면서 나의 회화에 개 입하는 식이지요. ‘생,장’ 시리즈 작업은 프랑스 다녀온 이후 칩거하 다시피 작업하다가 아들과 장마철에 스케치 겸 차 를 타고 인천 영종도 방향으로 갔던 적이 있어요. 초 입에 해안도로로 향할 겸 예단포로 빠져서 가게 되 었는데 낯설고 인적도 드문 해안가에 깔려 있는 보

stage, which is like the political game of our time, a place of reconciliation but with pathos. The backdrop is set to sea, a place where novel energy may appear at any time. I have also depicted ‘pink waves’ coming in a straight line, then which bends and collapses at the barrier fence.

6. Could you tell us about the land? Your works are alike yet contradictory in depicting a deserted land- Some Land, a land alike wasteland, and Growth and Development, which is lush with rough grass. Please tell us more about the works.

I have always wanted to work with the theme of land.

For example, it is our usual landscape where a mountain is suddenly dug up by a crane to build an apartment.

How violent and startling are such landscapes? When I was driving in Gyeonggi-do Province, I often stopped my car to make drawings on such scenes. However, I only realized how difficult it was to put into practice as I started working on the subject. What I wanted to discuss was not the violence of human beings in destroying nature, but ultimately the energy of ‘surprise’ and ‘novelty.’

I made a lot of drawings but none were finished. Then I have witnessed the drastic changes in Korea, and such situations, and such language came into my practice and finished the series. The backdrop of yellow ground is a dug-up ground somewhere in Gyeonggi-do Province, which I intervened by adding the border line of 38th parallel to the empty land like an invisible icon to create unacquainted irony.

Growth and Development series was produced after returning from France when I almost locked myself in to working. One day I went for a drive to Incheon Yeongjongdo Island with my son in the monsoon season to sketch. I drove to Yedanpo to head towards the coastal road, where I came across the weeds growing through the sidewalk blocks on an unfamiliar and desolate shore. With no presence of people, through the gaps in the sidewalk blocks the weeds grew as tall as people. Perhaps it was more impressive 51

도블럭 사이로 잡초들이 자라고 있었어요. 사람들이 다니지 않는 길이라 잡초들이 보도블럭 틈새로 사람 키만큼 잡초가 자라 있는 거예요. 코로나로 인해서 모든 것이 정지되어 있는 것 같은 시점이어서 더 그 랬는지 모르지만 보도블럭이란 제약조건이 오히려 상대적으로 잡초의 생명력을 부채질했던 것 같아 매 우 인상적이었어요. 거기서 드로잉을 많이 했고 잡 초가 가진 생명력과 보도블럭 격자 사이로 뚫고 나 오는 에너지를 어떻게 표현할 수 없을까 고민을 많 이 했지요. 결국은 거창할지도 모르나 우리가 산다 는 것이 얼마나 수고로운 일이었는지, 청춘의 터널 을 지나는 과정이나 50대 중반을 지나고 있는 제가 투영되기도 하고 저의 아버지, 어머니 사이에서 태 어난 탄생에 대한 어떤 연민에 대한 생각으로 여러 이야기들을 불러온 작업이 되었습니다. 그리고 어느 날 거실에 빨래가 아무렇게나 널려 있는 빨래걸이에 서 교묘하게도 고야의 ‘전쟁의 참화’ 드로잉이 오버 랩 되는 경험을 했어요. 이 경험은 결국 ‘아주 오랜 기다림Ⅱ’라는 타이틀로 3부작으로 완성하게 되었어 요. 태어날 때부터 분단이었던 상황이 말하듯이 그 앞에서 끊임없이 시간을 감당하고 있는 존재들에 대 한 이야기입니다. 낯설게 마모되거나 기형적인 상황 들을 표현한 것입니다.

7. 기법적으로 달라진 새로운 시도나 변화가 있으 신가요? 어떻게 보면 2017년 갤러리현대 전시에서 종이를 철 솔로 긁어서 화면에 물성을 극대화 시키는 작업을

to me than usual because we were facing a time of coronavirus at the time, when everything seemed to have come to a halt, but the condition of sidewalk blocks seemed to have relatively fueled the vitality of the weeds. I have made many sketches there and have pondered on how to deliver the vitality of the weeds, and the energy of it sprouting out of the grids of sidewalk blocks.

Though it may be grandiose, the work reflects various stories; on how it is painstaking to live, the process of passing through the tunnel of youth, a projection of myself passing mid-fifties, and the feeling of compassion for the birth born between my father and mother. And one day, on a laundry rack where laundry was randomly scattered, there overlapped Goya’s drawing of The Disasters of War. It was completed into the trilogy with the title of A long Waiting II. Born into the national division, it is about the beings who constantly endure time within the situation. It presents strangely worn or deformed situations.

7. Are there any new attempts or changes made regarding your techniques?

In 2017 at Gallery Hyundai, I first presented the works which maximized the physicality of the screen by scratching paper with wire brush, which was a very satisfactory exhibition however which left me difficulties on how to work with details.

처음 발표했었는데, 제 개인적으로는 만족스러운 전 시였지만 한편으로는 디테일에 대한 문제를 어떻게 할 것인가가 저에게 주어진 숙제였어요. 결과적으로 표면의 문제를 효과적으로 만드는 것에 있어서는 성공적이었으나 자칫 표면 자체가 목적이 될 수도 있게 되고, 그로 인해 사물의 둘레를 구성하 고 있는 디테일들을 유지해야 하는 난제를 안게 되 었지요. 그렇다보니 새삼스럽게 정물화도 그려보게 되고, 인물이나 풍경으로 확대 하면서 나름 표현의 카테고리에 갇히지 않으려고 노력하였지요. 어쩌면 표현의 방식을 좀 더 확장시키려 했다는 점에서 이 전과 차이가 있다는 생각을 합니다.

8. 작품에 드러나는 화면의 거친 질감은 작가의 몸 의 에너지가 고스라니 반영되었다고 볼 수 있는 데, 마띠에르가 가지고 있는 기법적 효과가 종이 에 스며드는 수묵과 어떤 지점에서 특별한 다른 개념을 전달할 수 있을까요? 그렇지요. 일단 여러 가지 실험 중에서 철솔로 종이 를 세우고 그 위에 호분을 바르고 드로잉 하는 과정 에서 어떤 경우에는 딱딱한 나무물질로 드로잉의 효 과를 내기도 했습니다. 마치 일필처럼. 경우에 따라 서는 이를 반복하면서 화면의 층위을 만들어 낼 수 있다는 것이 가능하다는걸 알았지요. 작업을 하다 보니 그전에 했던 작업보다는 표면에 비비거나 딱딱한 물질로 화면을 긁는 횟수가 많아졌 어요. 이로 인해 물성의 변화를 만들어내고 붓이 아 닌 나무 등으로 계속적으로 긋기를 반복 하면서 숨 을 죽이고 그 위에 드로잉을 하고 이어서 요철을 만 들면서 마치 빗살을 긋듯이 작업을 반복했어요. 화 면이 떠있는 것이 아니라 천착해가는 과정을 만들어 내면서 디테일을 끌어낼 수 있는 부분들을 시도했습 니다. 그러다보니 간혹 물질과 내용 어딘가에서 ‘반 투명’하게 견디고 있는 화면을 발견할 때가 매우 흥 미로웠습니다.

9. 그간의 작품을 보면 삶속에 밀착되어 있지만 우 리가 미처 깨닫지 못하는 시점, 상황, 에너지가 충돌하는 긴장감을 느끼게 합니다. 이러한 작업 을 이어갈 수 있는 작가만의 철학, 세계관이 있 다면 말씀해 주세요.

I was successful in making the surface stand out, but with the danger of making the surface itself as the purpose, I needed to keep the details that make up the perimeter of the object. As a result, I studied still life and expanded into portraits and landscapes to not be limited in the category of expression. Compared to previous works, there lies a difference in expanding the way of depiction.

8. The rough details on the canvas seems to have solely reflected the artist’s physical energy. How does matière differ from the ink seeping into paper in its techniques as well as the concept it delivers?

Yes, I underwent various experiments, in one I used hard wooden material for drawing on a paper prepared by scrubbing wire brush on paper with white wash on top, to five effects of drawing, as if I used one stroke of brush. I have also realized that repeating the process forms layers upon the canvas.

The number of times I was rubbing the surface or scratching the screen with a hard substance increased as I continued working. I repeated the practice of holding my breath, drawing on top, then making rugged surface as if drawing the patterns of comb, not with brush but with trees which made changes in physical properties. Drawings were not floating on the screen, but through a process of puncturing and carving in I aimed to strengthen its details. As a result, screens often existed ‘translucent’ between physicality and contents, which interested me very much.

9. Your previous works present tensions of the time, event and energy colliding which are closely attached within our lives but ones we are often unaware of. Please tell us about your philosophy, or an outlook on the world which allows you to continue such practice.

There is not a specific point, however, the advantage of painting is it allows for various layers to be compressed

구체적인 지점이 있다기보다는 회화가 가지고 있는 장점은 여러 레이어가 화면 안에 압축될 수 있다는 것입니다. 이는 영상, 영화와는 다른 부분입니다. 양 파껍질처럼 벗겨낼 때마다 또 다른 언어가 탄생하고 시간과 공간, 나의 심리, 사회적, 시대적 중층이 화 면 안에 쌓여있기 때문입니다. 저는 이런 부분이 매 력적입니다. 명확한 답을 설정하고 작업한다고 생각 해본 적은 없으나 질문을 확장시켜 나간다는 것이 중요했습니다. 그렇게 보면 나의 작업은 초창기부터 지금까지 보면 시간을 살고 있는 내 몸의 기록 같은 느낌을 받을 때가 있어요.

into a canvas. That is what makes it different to images and films. Like an onion, peeling its skin gives birth to another language, and time, space, personal psychology, social and periodic layers are deposited in the screen. I find such points interesting. I have not sought for a definite answer in my practice, but I have always strived to expand my questions. Looking back at my practice from the beginning up until now, it almost feels like a record of my body living the time.

제 작업에 있어서 일상성을 다루기도 하지만 시대를 반영하는 작업들이 1990년 첫 번째 개인전부터 일관 되게 이어지고 있다는 생각입니다. 첫 번째 개인전 에서 40m대작 ‘유적-토카타, 질주’도 그랬고, 1999 년 원서갤러리에서 발표했던 ‘맹인을 이끄는 맹인’ 시리즈도 마찬가지였습니다. 이는 피터 브뤼겔의 맹 인을 이끄는 맹인으로부터 힌트를 얻은 작품이었지 요. 2014년 OCI미술관 개인전에서의 충무호산수 연 작에선 세월호 사건이 나의 그림의 여러 부분에서 깊숙이 개입하게 되었지요. 그러고 보면 각 시대마 다의 사건들은 간혹 내게 회화적인 질문을 하게 되 는 계기를 가져다주기도 했다고 생각됩니다, 물론

I work with daily life, but have also continuously presented works which reflect the contemporary since my first solo exhibition in 1990; Remains-Tokata, running’ in my first exhibition, a forty meter blockbuster, and also the series ‘The Blind Leading the Blind’ first showcased at Wonseo Gallery in 1999 has reflected the era. It was a work inspired by Pieter Bruegel’s The Blind Leading the Blind. In the solo exhibition at OCI Museum of Art in 2014, the sinking of the MV Sewol disaster was embedded into the Landscape series depicting Chungju Lake. Events of the era have given me an opportunity to throw pictorial questions. Of course, there is the series of The Time with newspaper burning, but perhaps, just as how The Disasters of War

저는 개인적으로 은평구로 신축해서 이전한 사비나 미술관의 삼각형이라고 하는 공간에 매력을 갖습니 다. 삼각형의 공간이 가진 긴장감, 동선이 오는 일반 적인 사각형 화이트 큐브에서 나오는 인상과는 전혀 다르기 때문입니다. 그동안 구상했던 대지, 시간에 대한 문제의 상상력은 일반 화이트 큐브 보다는 이 러한 공간 속에서 긴장감 있게 만들어 낼 수 있다고 생각했습니다.

11. 마지막으로 학교에서 학생을 가르치면서 작업에 매진하기 어려운 환경일텐데 작업량이 무척 많 으세요. 어떻게 작업시간을 확보하고 어떤 작가 로 기억되고 싶은가요? 그런 질문을 가끔 받긴 하는데, 시간 나는 대로 작업 해요. 학교에선 선생으로서 집에선 남편으로서, 아빠 로서 여러 역할을 맡고 있기 때문에 절대적인 작업 시간을 가질 수 있지 않아요. 고무줄처럼 시간이 날 때마다 작업하는 수밖에 없어요. 그리고 저는 작가 로서 욕심 같아서는 시대가 지나도 나의 작업이 그 시대에 영감을 주는 작업이기를 희망합니다.

10. How do you find your exhibition at the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art? I personally find the newly-built architecture of the Savina Museum in Eunpyeong-gu – especially its triangular space – very attractive. Triangular space holds a different tension to the typical rectangular white cube, and also makes the flow of human traffic inside the space very different. The space seemed to amplify the tensions of my imaginations on the issues of land and time which I have portrayed in my works.

11. You are a prolific artist despite your teaching position at school which would not allow you to solely focus on your works. How do you schedule time for your work, and how would you like to be remembered as an artist?

I often receive those questions; I work whenever there is time. As a teacher at school, a husband and father at home, the various roles which I hold leaves my schedule very tight. I work whenever I can, as time is to me like a rubber band. As an artist, I hope my works will continue to inspire the times after mine.

유근택의 작품에 대한 글은 장르와 형식상의 특성을

Yoo Geun-Taek’s works have often been reviewed in focus of genre and formal qualities. Ryu Cheolha’s description – ‘crossing the boundaries of ink and color, the daring brushstrokes and bold composition maximizes the power of the medium’ – effectively summarizes Yoo GeunTaek’s oeuvre from a formalist perspective.

Toshiaki MINEMURA’s vital description of Yoo’s works – ‘his works always hold an unusual energy, which is alike the wriggling of an insect, sprawling and going about amid the normal living space,’ – approached the images highlighting the poetic elements within the form of his works, and has staged his oeuvre on an interesting level. Such modifiers have impact, as Yoo’s practice is based on the traditional medium of ink, yet surpasses its formal traditions to present aesthetics of everyday life and acquired new pictoriality, and thus have left a clear trajectory in the currents of contemporary Korean art.

This solo exhibition presents new works by Yoo Geun-Taek, especially those created within the past three years. There is no significance to the number of years, however the times of the past three years have been very different, which the works in this exhibition span across. It was an unusual time when the summit held between the North and the South Korea had been the most frequent since the national division, spouting political expectations and old hopes only to have them subsided to a disappointment; subsequently, it was a time interspersed with the COVID 19 pandemic which created a surreal landscape where daily movements were restricted and all the people on the street wore masks.

Perhaps, as the artist is accustomed to finding the themes of his works from an ordinary reality, would it not have triggered his sensitivity differently towards absorbing this transcendental reality? For him, who seems to have preferred layered and recursive temporality, the sensation of current time may have been completely different.

Among the new works presented in this exhibition, the first to catch one’s eyes are the newspaper series laid out on the table, either partly or fully burnt. Yoo has not preferred using materials which could limit the layered attributes inherent to his works. Therefore, the

담이 내뿜은 전시적 효과와 묵혀 두었던 기대가 분 출되었다가 실망으로 가라앉은 시간이며, 뒤이어 일 상적 이동이 금지되고 거리의 모든 사람들이 마스크 를 쓰고 있는 초현실적 풍경을 만들어 낸 코로나 19 팬데믹 현상으로 점철된 시간이었던 것이다. 일상적 현실에서 작품의 주제를 찾아내는 것에 익숙 한 작가라면 이러한 초현실적 상황을 받아들이는 예 민함이 평소와 다르게 작동하지 않았을까? 특히 중 층적이고 순환적인 시간성을 선호해온 것으로 보이 는 그에게 이 시간의 감각은 완전히 다른 것은 아니 었을까? 이번 전시에 선보인 신작들 중 먼저 눈에 들어오 는 것은 탁자 위에 놓인, 일부 혹은 전부가 불에 탄 신문 연작이다. 사실 유근택은 그의 작품에 내재하 는 중층적 속성에 제약을 가할 수 있는 소재를 선호 하지 않았었다. 때문에 이렇게 상징성이 강한 대상 을 제재로 한 연작의 탄생은 그에게는 상당히 새로 운 이미지 실험의 결과인 셈이다. 코로나 19가 급속 도로 전세계로 확산되며 해외 이동이 금지되기 시작 하던 기묘한 시점에 프랑스의 작가 레지던시 프로그 램에 참여하게 된 유근택은 시시각각 변하는 상황을 점검하기 위해 국내외 뉴스에 촉각을 곤두세울 수밖 에 없었다. 매일 쏟아지는 새로운 소식이 지속적인 기대를 배반하며 마치 들불처럼 전세계로 번지는 것 같았다고 기억하는 당시의 상황과 심상이 가장 흔히 접할 수 있는 몇 종의 신문들이 타들어가는 이미지 로 표현되었다. 직사각형의 테이블 위에 비슷한 비

birth of a series which utilizes medium with a strong symbolism, is the result of a fairly new image experiment for him. Invited to participate in a residency in France at the peculiar time when COVID 19 began rapidly spreading throughout the world, Yoo had to pay attention to national and international news to keep up to date with the fluctuating situations. It was like a wildfire burning across the world – new updates showering day by day deceiving the hopes continuously – which Yoo expressed with images bur ning newspapers, those commonly encountered, to present the state of affairs and the state of one’s mind which he remembered. On a square table, the ashes of newspaper which are aligned in the rectangle of similar proportion seem to directly present the contemporary situation of disaster, at the same time, it also seems to be a metaphor of the reality; the brilliant civilization of mankind which has been built up through long history but has fallen swiftly and disastrously in the rise of epidemic. The form of fire, unrealistically burning away aligned, burns the traces of the text at first glance and replaces the properties of words as symbols to nonsensical properties. In particular the form of a newspaper that has been burned down to ashes shows the process and speed of transition from a familiar reality to a surreal landscape that has been completely removed.

럼 보이기도 하지만, 동시에 오랜 역사를 통해 쌓아 온 인류의 찬란한 문명이 전염병의 유행 앞에서 신 속하고 처참하게 실패하고 있는 현실을 은유하고 있 는 것 같기도 하다. 일정한 줄을 이루며 비현실적으 로 타들어가고 있는 불의 형태는 언뜻언뜻 보이는 텍스트의 흔적들을 고르게 태워버리면서 기호로서 의 문자의 속성을 무의미한 형식의 물성으로 치환시 킨다. 특히 전소되어 재만 남은 신문의 형태는 익숙 한 현실로부터 완벽하게 탈각된 초현실적 풍경으로 전환되는 과정과 그 속도를 보여준다.

Depictions of burning newspapers on the table hold a different atmosphere to Some Border – New York Times (2019), which depicts newspaper on a vast ground where barrier fences are seen afar. Former presents the unusual and helpless situation of pandemic which the artist witnessed in a straightforward symbolic system, and the latter – a burning New York Times laid on a rough ground – seems to imply the time where personal thoughts have overlapped, whose emotional states have fluctuated by the reality

of national division, delivered in the language of various media.

품 <어떤 경계-뉴욕타임즈, 2019>와는 사뭇 다른 느 낌을 준다. 전자가 팬데믹이라는 특수하고 무력한 상황에 대한 작가의 목도를 다분히 직설적인 상징체 계로 보여준다면, 타들어가고 있는 실제 뉴욕타임즈 가 거친 대지 위에 놓인 후자는 분단이라는 현실이 전파되는 수많은 매체의 언어들과, 그것에 의해 어 떤 식으로든 출렁이는 감정적 상태를 겪을 수밖에 없었던 개인의 상념들이 중첩된 시간을 암시하는 듯 하다. 유근택이 그리는 많은 풍경화들은 다분히 감정 과 태도가 두드러진 풍경들이다. <매향리의 밀물> (2019)에서 밀려들어오는 바닷물결이 마치 거친 돌로 가득 찬 황무지가 융기하고 있는 것처럼 보이는 것 이나, <당신의 마음>(2018) 연작에서 낮과 밤의 구분 이 안되는 어두운 해변에서 좌우 대비 매우 길게 펼 쳐지는 공간의 상하비례를 취하는 것은 익숙한 장소 에서 생경한 풍경을 잡아낸 작가의 예리한 시선을 드러낸다. 한편 <파도>(2020) 연작이나 <어떤 경계> (2018) 연작 일부에서는 아득한 풍경의 끝자락에 가 로로 드리워진 철책선이 보이는데, 이는 거의 유일 한 분단국가에 살고 있는 한국인에게 이러한 철책이 하나의 상징이자 기호로 작동하는 현실에 대한 작가 의 복잡한 감정을 표현한다. 최근 종종 망각한 채 살 아가게 되는 분단의 현실 하에서 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 형성된 복잡한 감정의 축적을 다시 느끼게 하는 자 극적인 일들이 많았다. 유근택은 분단이라는 한반도 의 현실이 일상에 행사하는 구체적인 영향력을 자기

Many landscape paintings by Yoo Geuntaek present landscapes where emotions and attitudes are prominent. Yoo captures the unfamiliar landscape in a familiar place with his sharp gaze; in The Tide of Maehyang-ri (2019) he portrays the waves of the sea appear as if a wasteland filled with coarse stones is rising in; in the series Your Mind (2018), he depicts a dark beach where day and night cannot be distinguished, which is vertically elongated yet proportional. On the other hand, barrier fences are hung horizontally at the end of distant landscapes in some of the Wave (2020) series or the Some Boundaries (2018) series; such expresses artist’s complicated feelings towards the reality of Korea as the only divided nation, where barrier fence act as a symbol and sign.

Recently, there have been many provocative events that brought up the complicated layers of feeling on the surface, which has formed for a long period of time under the reality of often forgotten division. Yoo has always felt the specific influence which the reality of the division of Korea has on daily life, however he has hesitated to present them simply through painting. This is because he has always been wary of narrowing down the layers of multi-layered interpretations in the use of a particular symbol. However, in this exhibition, he presented the barrier fences on the sides of the open ground, and presented the reality of the division which triggered political incidents in the past few years.

이번 전시에서 그는 넓게 펼쳐진 대지의 한편에 철 책선들 그리면서 지난 몇 년간 여러가지 감정을 안 겨준 정치적 사건과 그것이 가능했던 근거지로서의 분단의 현실을 표현했다.

Yoo’s sketches which capture landscapes are casual and persistent at the same time. From unfamiliar depictions of everyday spaces, and to a scale of land in view in the angle of drone footage, his sketch encompasses a variety of

풍경을 포착하기 위한 유근택의 사생은 일상적이 면서도 집요하다. 그의 사생은 익숙한 일상의 공간 주위를 생경하게 구현한 것들부터 드론을 띄워 보 는 것 같은 앵글과 스케일의 대지까지 다양한 장소 를 거침없이 포괄한다. 보도블럭 사이를 뚫고 자라 는 잡초가 무성한 도시의 어느 구성을 배경으로 하 는 <생.장>연작은 장소의 속성이 거의 제거되어 있는 공간이다. 이번 전시에 처음 선보이는 이 연작은 화 면을 빽빽하게 채운 잡초들이 불편한 배경을 이루고 있고, 그 가운데 인물이나 정물이 등장한다. 쓰러져 있는 자신과 서 있는 자신이 동시에 등장하고, 오래 된 흑백사진 속 가족이 우거진 풀 사이에 놓여있기 도 하며, 불타는 책이 놓인 나무탁자가 놓여있기도 하다. 버려진 땅 위의 잡초들과 같이 지극히 일상적 인 현실과, 그것을 초월하는 초현실적 요소들이 공 존하고 있는 것이다. 화면을 가득 채운 탁자 위에서 여러 상황이 연출되 는 연작은 이전 전시에서도 종종 등장했던 작품들이 다. 널찍한 탁자 위에 만찬을 위한 그릇과 술잔 등이 번잡하게 놓여있는 <어떤 만찬> 연작에서 현실은 전 혀 이질적인 배경의 장소에 놓여있는데, 특히 어느 한 구석에 비현실적 스케일로 변형된 일상의 오브 제는 지금의 이 순간을 초현실의 상황으로 변모시킨 다. 또한 탁자 위 나무의 물결이 실제 물결로 오버랩 되고 그 위를 유유히 지나는 나룻배와 그 배에 축소 된 코끼리 등이 타고 있는 <아침> 연작의 상황 또한 탁자 위에 놓인 가장 일상적인 오브제들이 항변하는 현실성과, 그러한 현실성을 무화시키는 비현실성이 중첩된 것이다. 그 외에도 탁자 위에서는 다양한 상 황들이 펼쳐지는데, 이는 탁자라는 현실적 토대 위 에서 존재하고 사라져간 수많은 시간이나 기억, 감 정, 언어 등을 상상하게 한다. 여기에 최근의 현실이 라는 맥락이 더해지면서 이미지는 증폭된 감정의 파 장을 경험하게 한다. 중첩된 시간성은 전시된 다른 작품들이 발산하는 동시대적 현실의 느낌들과 공명 하면서 지금 우리가 처한 현실의 속성들을 자연스럽

spaces. Growth and Development series, set in the backdrops of a city where weeds have overgrown through the sidewalk blocks, presents a space where the attributes of a place are almost removed. The series is first shown in this exhibition, which presents a person or still life amongst the weeds which fill the canvas; there exists the fallen self and the standing self; family photograph of black and white laying amongst the lush grass; a wooden table with a burning book on top. Plain everyday reality just like weeds on abandoned land, and the surreal elements which transcend it coexist.

The series, in which various situations are set onto a table which fills the whole canvas, are reminiscent of Yoo’s previous works. In Some Dinner series, in which the dishes and glasses for diner are crowded on a spacious table, reality lies in a very disparate background; in the corner of the canvas, the object of everyday life is distorted into an impossible scale, and turns the moment into a surreal situation. Also, in the series of Morning, in which the waves of trees on table overlap with actual waves, along with a downsized elephant riding the boat on those waves, again presents the reality which most ordinary objects appeal against, and overlaps unreality that negates reality. Furthermore, a set of circumstances unfold on the table, which is reminiscent of time, memory, feeling, language which has existed on the basis of reality, the table. With the context of recent reality added, the image invites one to experience an amplified wave of feelings. The overlapped temporality echoes with the concurrent spirits of other exhibited works, to make us naturally ponder on the qualities of reality.

이번 전시에 등장하는 유근택의 작품들은 실재하는 장소지만 장소성이 제거되어 일종의 초현실적 배경 처럼 보이거나, 장소성을 원래 갖지 않는 중립적 공 간이 어떤 장소의 속성을 부여받은 배경으로 기능하 는 것들로 구분할 수 있을 것 같다. 그러한 배경적 맥락은 현실을 초현실처럼, 관념을 실재처럼 구성하 는 유근택 작품의 교차적 특징을 잘 보여주고 있다. 유근택의 작품은 일상적 풍경 속에 개인의 서사들이 중첩되어 있고, 그 서사 속에 역사나 사상, 혹은 거 대한 흐림의 단편들이 불쑥불쑥 튀어나오거나 은밀 하게 드러나는 것들이 많았다. 이번 전시의 작품들 은 그러한 특징을 일관되게 유지하지만 동시에 매우 특별한 시대를 배경으로 하고 있기에 이전과는 다 른 밀도가 존재한다. 특히 이번 전시의 작품들에서 현실과 초현실이 교차하는 맥락이 유난히 두드러지 는 것은 결국 특별한 상황들이 유독 많았던 지난 수 년의 시간과 경험이 강렬하게 투영되어 있기 때문인 것 같다. 유근택의 회화는 결론을 정의하지 않는다. 그의 회 화에는 일상에 가해지는 알 수 없는 조건들에 대한 대답을 찾기 보다 그 모름을 있는 그대로 수용함으 로써 삶의 복잡성을 포용하려는 작가의 태도가 잘 드러난다. 시간이 순환하고 상념과 감정이 더해져 만들어낸 이 초현실의 장면들은 강박적으로 해답을 모색하는 동시대에 새로운 사유의 층위를 더한다. 그의 작품이 이 번잡한 시대에 더 깊은 정동을 이끌 어내는 것은 그가 제시하는 태도와 의미가 부박한 시대를 좀 더 풍부하고 두꺼운 것으로 만들고 있기 때문이다.

Yoo’s works in this exhibition either presents a surreal backdrop, which is a place existent in reality removed of its sense of place, or a backdrop of a neutral space – originally without a sense of place – given a property of a place.

Such context of backdrops features how Yoo crossovers reality as surreal, and idea as existent being.

Individual narratives are overlapped within a daily scene, and in the narratives appear history, ideology, or fragments of huge currents, which would either pop up or be covertly revealed in Yoo’s works. The works in this exhibition consistently maintain such nature, however having set in a very special time, there exists a different density. The intersecting context of reality and surreal is evident in this exhibition, as the works embrace the times and experiences of the last few years met with peculiar situations.

Yoo Geun-Taek’s paintings do not outline conclusions. His paintings do not seek answers to unknown conditions in reality, but by embracing the unknown, the artist aims to tolerate the complexity of life. The surreal scenes which were made with ideas and emotions amongst the time circulating, adds a new layer of reason to the present-day which compulsively seeks for answers. His works are deeply moving within these intricate times as the attitude and meaning which he puts forward makes the frivolous era into something richer and thicker.
