EPR – New way of working

We would like to thank you for your hard work as you familiarise yourself with the new system. We know that there have been challenges, but our colleagues have shown resilience as they adapt to the new ways of working.

Over the coming weeks, we will be celebrating those teams that have been particularly impacted by the change and share how they have adapted to the new system.

In this edition, we would like to celebrate the Booking and Scheduling Team in William Farr House.

They have embraced the new ways of working that are involved with CareFlow for their department and worked closely with the programme team throughout the implementation, building strong working relationships and collaborating across teams. Working with the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) team, they have put the knowledge they gained during functional and process design groups into practice, by navigating the new system.

When we caught up with them, the team expressed

that before Go Live weekend they naturally felt lots of emotions, including nerves and apprehension. They say they are getting used to the new system.

Alice Williams, Booking Services Manager, said: “It went very smoothly. I was very surprised how well the team and management took it on. I was really proud of them.”

Alice said the team is adapting and adjusting to the new way of working. “It’s been tough but to say that I’m proud of the team would be an understatement.”

Her advice to others is “just take your time, have a think more than anything, be patient and ask if you aren’t sure. It will come in time. It’s such a difference from what we are used to and just communicate with each other, talk through the process, ask any questions.”

Well done to the Booking and Scheduling Team and everyone coming together to help. If you are struggling with the CareFlow system, please refer to the resources available on the intranet.

It’s not just a football tournament it’s team building

The annual SaTH Charity Football Tournament is taking place on Sunday 19 May from 9.30am onwards at the Sports Village in Shrewsbury.

The money raised from the day will go towards the Dementia Appeal, enabling the dementia team to purchase single use items including reminiscence dolls, nostalgic items and activities for patients living with dementia. The purchases will support patients who find themselves in an unfamiliar environment and may well be confused and worried.

Kangaroo-a-thon

The Neonatal Unit at Princess Royal Hospital is proud to announce its participation in Kangaroo Care Day.

This global initiative promotes the importance and benefits of kangaroo care for premature and low birthweight infants.

On Wednesday 15 May, Princess Royal Hospital joined hospitals worldwide in celebrating this special day by highlighting the significance of kangaroo care in neonatal care.

Kangaroo Care, or skin-to-skin care, is a method for newborns, particularly premature babies, where they are held skin-to-skin with their parent or caregiver. This practice has been shown to have numerous benefits for both infants and parents, including improved bonding, regulation of the baby’s body temperature, heart rate, and breathing, enhanced breastfeeding success, and overall better neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Emily, mum to baby Isabelle, said: “Isabelle was born at 25 weeks which was obviously a huge shock, so the kangaroo-a-thon is a lovely way to help to build a bond with her through skin-to-skin contact.”

To mark Kangaroo Care Day, Princess Royal Hospital will host a “Kangaroo-a-thon” for the week of International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day to raise awareness about the importance of kangaroo care and provide support and education to parents and caregivers. Parents and caregivers will be encouraged to have as much skin-to-skin with their babies as possible. Prizes will also be awarded to the colleagues who facilitate the most skin-to-skin for our parents and babies.

“We know how important skin-to-skin is for babies and their parents,” said Hannah Wilson, Ward Sister. “We are committed to providing the highest quality of care to our tiniest patients and supporting families every step of the way. We hope that our Kangaroo-a-thon will help to increase the amount of skin-to-skin the babies on our unit are receiving and in turn improve parent’s experiences and outcomes for the babies.”.

Brianne, mum to baby Ivy, said: “I always knew from the day Ivy was born at 30 weeks that her stats would improve dramatically when we had skin-to-skin contact and that is the case even now at six weeks old so it’s great that the unit is promoting the importance of skin-to-skin. I want to say a big thank you to all the staff here for looking after us so well.”

Local Shropshire charity Copthorne Cickers to close

A charity is to close after 32 years, raising nearly £60,000 for the Cardiology Department fund at the Trust.

The Copthorne Cickers recently made its final donation of £6,000 to SaTH Charity’s Cardiology Department fund and has now closed the charitable arm of the group.

The group was formed in 1992 by a group of patients who had spent time together in the RSH Coronary Care Ward and Rehabilitation Department. It is affiliated to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and since forming 32 years ago the group has raised nearly £60,000 for the RSH Cardiac and Rehabilitation Units.

Jenny Worley, Chair of the Copthorne Cickers, said: “Copthorne Cickers has over the last 30 years supported many people who attended our meetings. Primarily a social group holding regular monthly meetings, members and their partners could meet with others who had also had heart problems. Regular contact with the heart team kept us abreast of the needs of the department. Equipment was provided with a value of over £50,000.

“It was agreed that Copthorne Cickers United should cease to be a registered charity and donations of £3,000 to Telford Coronary Ward and £3,000 to the Rehabilitation unit at Royal Shrewsbury were made.

“Membership since COVID-19 has fallen but meetings are still held each month on the third Thursday at Claremont Baptist Church in Shrewsbury. Over the years the group

has bought specialist chairs, ECG and C Pap devices, blood pressure monitors, rehabilitation equipment and patient TVs. All these items were purchased through a combination of kind donations, bucket collections outside supermarkets, raffles and its annual harvest festival and auction. They have also received support from other local groups.”

Tom Phelps, Centre Manager for Cardiology, Cardiorespiratory, Diabetes & Endocrinology at SaTH, said: “We are so grateful for all the support we’ve received from the Copthorne Cickers since 1992, their ongoing dedication to raising money to improve the experience for other patients is admirable and we wish them well with their social group.”

The group has decided to close the charitable arm of the organisation but will continue to meet in a social capacity. The group is open to anyone who has had a heart problem including their friends and family. The group meets every third Thursday of the month at Crowmoor Baptist Church from 2pm to 4pm.

Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation, said: “We want to thank Copthorne Cickers for supporting the Trust for over 30 years with multiple donations of vital equipment. By fundraising you have made a huge difference to the lives of patients and their relatives. We wish you well with your social group.”

You can find out more about the Copthorne Cickers via their website https://www.cickers. com/.

Making it Count Together

Our work on the culture of our organisation continues with the launch of our Making a Difference Together online conversation, Making it Count Together, where colleagues have the opportunity to share ideas and suggestions on how they can save money in their division.

The conversation gives every colleague an opportunity to share ideas and insights in a safe, anonymous online space. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can be accessed from a PC, tablet or smartphone.

Every colleague has been invited via their nhs. net email (please check all folders for your login details) to join the conversation. If you haven’t received your login details please contact sath. organisationaldevelopmentteam@nhs.net.

A Royal invitation

This online conversation is about identifying what changes we can make, no matter how small, to save money within our Trust. We want services that are high quality at the best possible cost to achieve that. We also want to make the NHS sustainable for us and future generations.

If you would like to discuss your ideas on how you can save money in your division in person, please attend one of our drop-in sessions which are taking place on the below dates/venues:

Fond farewell to long-serving nurse

For the past 23 years Vicki Gill has been devoted to her role, making a difference to her patients and always putting them first.

She has been instrumental in many aspects of improving care and practices for orthopaedic and hip arthroplasty patients as well as teaching nursing and medical colleagues to ensure best practice is followed.

She has been pioneering during her 23 years at the Trust, not only as a role model to her peers but a true friend and colleague to everyone who has had the privilege to work alongside her during this time. She will be truly missed by all her patients and colleagues.

Thank you, Vicki, for your commitment, loyalty, and care.

Congratulations to Medical Engineering Services

An ISO13485 external audit, conducted by URS, was recently carried out and we are extremely pleased to say that they passed with flying colours once again!

The auditors came back with no findings, which is a great a achievement and a testament to the care and diligence the MES team adopt with their working practices.

This highlights the effort that the MES team consistently puts in to correctly document work, in line with Quality processes and RAM database accuracy, without this we would not be able to retain the accredited status. Well done to the whole team.
