Moving to Excellence: Our roadmap

Our goals – where we want to be

• Excellence in quality, safety and experience of care

• A centre of excellence for research, innovation and education

• A great place to work

• Clinically and environmentally sustainable

• In financial balance

Our journey – how we will get there

• Driving quality

• Creating the right culture

• Transforming how we deliver services and digital capability

• Working in partnership

• Achieving university trust status

• Improving performance and restoring financial balance

Moving to Excellence: Stronger Together

to Ward 11 for

The team on Ward 11 have implemented a structured approach to enhance patient discharge processes and efficiency. The interventions aimed at improving teamwork, discharge planning, and communication.

Interventions:

1.SHOP model on Board Round

2.SHOP model on Ward Round (most successful)

3.Afternoon Huddle

Key Improvements:

• Enhanced consultant collaboration during board rounds led to robust peer review and timely discharges

• Input from social care and reconditioning teams reduced unnecessary therapy referrals

• Allocating a doctor specifically for discharge letters streamlined discharge processes

• Afternoon huddles effectively highlighted medically fit for discharge (MFFD) patients, addressing pending actions promptly

Moving to Excellence: Road to financial balance

Thank you – we made progress, but we need to keep going

• Thank you for everything you have done over the last few months. We know it wasn’t easy, but it did make a difference

• We made progress on our Cost Improvement Programme (CIP) and delivered £34m of efficiency savings in 2024/25 - nearly double that of 2023/24

• We need to keep going in 2025/26 – live within our budgets, deliver on performance and continue our mission to provide excellent care

Moving to Excellence: Road to financial balance

Delivering what we promise and staying within budget

We need to go further this year, and we have plans in place

• We have agreed an underlying deficit of £45.1m and CIP efficiencies of £41.4m for 2025/26

• We need to work towards an underlying breakeven position in future years

• We can deliver these challenging targets together, and we require everyone’s efforts:

o Recruit only to vacancies that are critical to patient safety

o Look for opportunities – big or small – to reform and remove waste

o Live within our means - challenge every pound we spend

o Maximise what we do well to make us more productive

Moving to Excellence: Road to financial balance

We have been selected to work with NHS Supply Chain to roll out a new Inventory Management System (IMS) - the first phase went live on 31 March

• The new system will be installed in phases, first in X-ray, Cath Lab and Pacing at PRH before progressing onto Theatres in the summer

• It allows colleagues to scan products in real time and capture the data electronically, making the process more efficient

• It is anticipated that the new IMS will save the Trust around £3m over 5 years Benefits include: • Improved patient care and experience • Better stock visibility

Cost savings

Less waste

Fewer administrative tasks

More efficient and joined-up processes

Hospitals Transformation Programme

The Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP) is a key part of the overarching plan to transform health and care services across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Powys.

• Emergency Department remodelling – phase one of the new ED became operational on 26 March – thank you to all colleagues involved. Phase two of the work will complete in August 2025, providing the second part of majors

• Attenuation tank works outside the Copthorne Building are underway. We have replaced car parking and drop-off facilities for services to the front of the site

• The next pop-up session for staff will take place on Thursday 15 May, 11am-1pm in the reception of Copthorne Building

Our estate: Car parking Parking on residential roads and car parks

We are hearing regularly from our neighbours about colleagues parking on residential roads and causing obstructions and concern.

We have provided colleagues at RSH with a safe, free solution to the reduced parking spaces on site in the form of the Park & Ride.

We would encourage all colleagues that are currently parking on neighbourhood roads, or in the cricket ground car park to embrace our Trusts values and use the Park & Ride.

Have you tried the PRH Park & Ride?

The service runs from 6.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. We have received some excellent feedback about how helpful and friendly the drivers are and how they go the extra mile to help our colleagues.

You will need to register to use the service.

Help free up spaces for our patients with the free Park & Ride service and earn your free drinks.

Work progresses on RAAC project

The phased work to remove reinforced aerated autoclaved concrete (RAAC) from the PRH site.

The kitchen and Apley Restaurant have been closed since RAAC was identified in September 2023. NHSE national funding has been confirmed for the project and work is due to be completed by March 2026.

How is the work progressing?

• The Apley Restaurant servery has been temporarily relocated to the former League of Friends Unit on the ground floor with seating close by in the conservatory

• Takeaway services will still be available within the main hospital building as the work is phased

• The temporary junior doctors’ mess in the Education Centre has been refurbished with walls put up to create more privacy

• Planning permission has been granted for a new generator facility

We would like to say thank you to the Estates and Catering teams for all their hard work.

Keep IT Confidential: Phishing

Phishing is when hackers and criminals send unsolicited emails to trick people into providing access to information. Phishing, scams, frauds and hoaxes via email or social media are a major source of cybercrime affecting many internet users.

How to spot a phishing email

• Is it a suspicious email address or an unusual design/format?

• Is the email requesting sensitive or personal information?

• Does the email have poor grammar and spelling?

• Does the email contain a suspicious link or attachment?

• Is the email urgent or trying to make you panic?

Scrutinise all requests carefully before actioning

What to do if you get a phishing email?

If you receive an email that you suspect to be spam, or an attempt to spoof or phish your account, it is extremely important that you report to the NHSmail helpdesk. You will never legitimately be asked to provide your NHSmail credentials to anyone.

• Do not respond to or follow any links within an email that asks you for your login details

• If you receive an email asking you for your NHSmail account credentials, please report it via the shield in your emails. Always click ‘report phishing’ and not ‘report junk’

• Once the email has been reported it should be deleted from your mailbox - select the suspect email, hold down the ‘shift’ key and press the ‘delete’ key (if you get a warning, click yes)

If you have responded in any way to any such email, please contact the Cyber Security Team or the IT self service desk immediately and report it to them in the first instance. They will be able to provide support and advice on further actions, such as password changes.

If you have any questions or concerns about cyber security, see the IT Cyber Security Team intranet page or email sath.cybersecurityteam@nhs.net.

Information Governance: Use of mobile devices by patients in hospital

There are many benefits for patients that arise from encouraging them to use mobile devices:

• Communication with family and friends – often an essential element of support and comfort

• Accessing helpful information about their conditions – apps and digital services can support greater patient participation and inform joint decision-making

• Recording conversations – doing so can help reduce anxiety for patients trying to remember and understand what was said. It also allows them to share the information later with their loved ones and carers. As a matter of good practice, the patient/service user should ask you whether you are okay with them recording the conversation. For information on what patients can legally record without seeking permission, and what to do if a covert recording is posted online, visit: BMA's guidance on patients recording consultations.

You can support patients to use their mobile devices appropriately as follows:

• Ask patients to respect people’s privacy if they look like they are taking photos without permission, e.g. of staff or other patients in the background

• Speak to patients if the use of their mobile device is disturbing others e.g. if it is interrupting care provision, creating unacceptable working conditions for colleagues or undermining patient recuperation

• Ask patients to switch off their phones or enable airplane mode if you see them using phones in an area where mobile devices are not permitted e.g. around sensitive equipment. These areas will be indicated by a sign that clearly states use of mobile devices is not permitted.

• Speak to your line manager and hospital security if you see anyone suspiciously taking photos of children or vulnerable adults.

PLEASE NOTE THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT APPLIES: Article 8 protects your right to respect for your private life, your family life, your home and your correspondence (letters, telephone calls and emails) Use of mobile devices by patients in hospitals - NHS Transformation Directorate
