Dear Prospective Students and Families,
Seasons Greetings from St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School! It’s hard to believe that our first semester will soon come to a close as our students are now deep into semester exams. Soon, they will be enjoying a wellearned break from classes to spend time with friends and loved ones during the holidays.
In our last newsletter, we began addressing what aspects of SAS set us apart from other schools, both regionally and nationally. I discussed what we call our Sewanee Experience, shining a light on the very unique and tangible relationship between SAS and our neighbors, Sewanee: University of the South, a top 50 national liberal arts college.
Today, I bring your attention to our place-based programming including environmental sciences, outdoor adventure, outdoor sports, our unique Cumberland Scholars program, and much more. Remember, we have access to 13,550 acres when combining the properties of Sewanee and SAS, and we take significant advantage of it. This land we inhabit informs the physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth of our students, and we build serious programming around it. Among other things, our place-based programming takes advantage of our own archeological dig site, our wetlands, outdoor climbing, caving, our own reservoir, over 70 miles of trails for hiking and single track mountain biking, our own farm, and much more.
Please explore the many aspects of our outdoor program below and discover for yourself the deep dives we take into the world around us from intellectual and academic exploration to physical opportunities on foot, in the water, on a mountain bike, on the farm, or on a boulder.
Explore our Outdoor Education Program.
Graduate with distinction by becoming a Cumberland Scholar.
Indoor and outdoor rock climbing is accessible right here on campus.
Mountain Biking is a varsity sport hosting beginner and elite riders who compete regionally and nationally. Our riders train on over 70 miles of trails right from our front porch. Please flip through our SAS magazine to discover a great story about one of our riders who competes on the national stage.
New Outdoor Learning Center in 2025: Currently undet construction, our 3,600 sq. ft. facility will support mountain biking, rock climbing, and all aspects of our outdoor education program. The new facility includes a bike lab, bike storage, climbing walls, and a pump track for skill development. Enjoy a brief snap-shot of the new facility in our SAS magazine on page 10.
As you will discover, our genuine place-based education sets SAS apart from schools nationally, and our new outdoor learning center represents a game-changer for enhancing the program on a much deeper level. Next, we will share about our elite programming and facilities in the performing and studio arts.
