SAS’s endowment serves as a permanent, self-sustaining resource for the long-term health and success of the school. Nearly half of our endowment is specifically earmarked to benefit financial aid, allowing us to uphold a primary tenet of our mission and our heritage.
The endowment consists of 52 individual funds with a June 30, 2024 market value of $26.6 million. These funds generated $1.2 million in revenue for the 2023-2024 school year – for 16.5% of the budget. Distributions are based on a conservative, Board of Trustees-approved distribution of 6% (calculated using a trailing three-year moving average of annual market values).

When I first began writing this speech, I wasn’t sure how to start. knew I wanted to say some thank yous, but I didn’t want to be too sappy, or too cliche. So, naturally, I asked my mom. And, in a very mom fashion– she told me that a good starting point would be to think about all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and guardians who have been with us every step of the way. At every soccer game, volleyball game, swim meet, track meet, performance, etc… etc… Who helped us with our calculus homework or listened when we practiced our poetry recitation. She asked me what I would want to say to them. And honestly, I’m not sure. The best I can do is to say– thank you. Thank you for being there at every game. Thank you for listening to us butcher whatever poem we were trying to learn and helping us with homework or projects or whatever else we probably should have done sooner than the day before it was due. Thank you for shaping us into the adults that we are now, and thank you for loving us and supporting us throughout it all.
Now, for the students. What can I say to such a diverse group of people who have impacted me in so many meaningful ways? What can say to impart upon you some morsel of wisdom that I’m not sure I have? How do I convey what this class has accomplished together and as individuals? How many stories about Charlie getting lost in the woods can I tell? Yes… it did happen more than once. How many funny anecdotes can I make before they tell me to be serious? I guess, for a lot of us, I can start at the beginning. I came into SAS as a sixth grader, having spent the past 5th-grade year believing I was on the top of the societal food chain (to be fair, I was a head taller than everyone, so my ego was pretty high). I was confident in my friendships, my academics, and where I stood in my community. As someone who had grown up surrounded by people had known practically since birth, it was a shocking shift to come to SAS, somewhere completely new to me (albeit only 5 minutes down the road). When we spend so much of our lives encompassed in the same community, it can be easy to lose ourselves within it. I came into 6th grade unprepared for the new classes, new people, and new environments– not to mention I was now at the very, very bottom of this social food chain.
As many of us have probably experienced at least once in our lives, whether you are moving from California to a new state, or coming into school from homeschooling, losing those connections to who was before meant I had to find myself again. I had to build myself back up piece by piece before I could feel whole again. It’s been a long couple of years of building, but I haven’t been alone. I went to a creedal statement this past week that talked about unity, community, and individualism. For me, it brought up three crucial questions that think are relevant to us now, especially as we leave. What does it mean to have unity with a group of people? How is community essential to
our lives? And how do we hold onto our individual identities while building strong connections? I want to explore these questions with you all today. Firstly, what is unity? When we say unity, it can be easy to think about a cohesive, group– a group of all the same people with the same ideas. But Webster’s Dictionary defines unity as… just kidding, I’m cliche but not that cliche. When I think of unity, I think of the hands painted on the walls of the chapel commons. think of different people being interconnected by something that we can’t define. Maybe it’s love. Maybe it’s something else. I like to think our class has unity. like to believe that as we sit together today, some of us itching to get this service moving and some of us trying not to imagine life away, we can all feel that underlying understanding that we got here together– united. Though some of us have been here for 7 years and some of us only 1, we worked hard together. We collectively groaned at the bell in religion together. We struggled through these past few weeks together, and can now say that we are leaving together. We are unified by the simple fact that we are here, we are loved, and we made it, even when maybe we didn’t think we would.
Secondly, how is community crucial in our lives? I’m not sure who I would be without the community here. I’m not sure I would have been able to find all the scattered, lost, pieces of myself without everybody here. Community isn’t about knowing everyone closely, but rather, about being a part of something bigger than ourselves. Your very presence in a community is enough to impact everyone in it. You all have given me more than I could ever put into words, but want to at least try to express it.
To the teachers: Thank you for teaching us more than just your subject. I learned the true meaning of patience from Mother Short in religion. I learned the power of stories from Mr. Short’s “Short’s Shorts” in 6th grade. The importance of organization came from Mr. Burns’s geometry class. Knowing when to ask questions and when to listen came from Dr. Terry’s chemistry class. Empathy and kindness came from every conversation with Ms. Carlos. Passion and determination came from Mrs. Knoll’s coaching in swim. Understanding my own self-worth beyond grades came from my struggles in Mrs. Burns’s precalculus class. How to find joy within the struggle came from Mr. Christopher’s calculus class (notice the theme of struggle from the math department). Dr. Ankney showed me how complex the world is. Mr. Windhauser taught me the importance of learning from the past, and Dr. Ercole taught me how to go with the flow. Mr. Dillon showed me just how much there is to do in the world. Mr. Wheeler taught me that adults are humans, too. Mrs. Black instilled in me the influential power of respect-- what respecting yourself and respecting others can accomplish. Ms. Padro taught me how to have confidence in
myself. Ms. Asmus and Ms. Randolph showed me the strength of steadiness and structure (not to mention how to write a mean free verse poem). Mrs. Malde introduced me to the beauty of creative art, and Ms. Bowie taught me that I can do anything put my mind to. I don’t think we can ever truly understand what the teachers here have done for us– but they have shaped our very beings and have loved us every step of the way. To the senior class: I can’t do everyone justice, because I don’t know some of you half as well as I would like to. But meant what I said at the senior retreat when I said am unfathomably proud of all of you and the people that you are. You have taught me what it means to be resilient in the face of unimaginable adversity and pain, to face the world with humor, to put others before yourself, to put yourself and your health first. You’ve shown me what hard work and determination look like, and how it pays off. I’ve been awestruck by your art, or music, or dance, or sheer athletic ability. I’ve been inspired by your writing, your words, the stories you’ve shared, and the insight you’ve brought to class discussions or conversations. You are all truly extraordinary people, and I am so far beyond grateful to have known you, even if we never talked. You are my community, and an irreplaceable part of this community, and I know that your presence has made SAS that much stronger.
Finally, how do we hold onto our own individual selves while still forging strong connections? Maybe for some of you, you’ve always known what it meant to be yourself. I know I didn’t. For most of my life, I was who I thought other people wanted me to be. When I came to SAS, there were so many new people and teachers that I pulled myself apart trying to be something for everyone. But a true connection can’t form without something to grasp onto. Something to anchor it. When we aren’t ourselves, when we forget to hold onto and be true to the essential parts of us that make us, us-- those connections and relationships are built on something fragile. A phantom pillar. If there is one message leave you with today, it’s that who you are is inherently valuable beyond measure. You are loved and worthy of love. Your inner being is something that can never be taken away from you but has to be protected. Be who you are and share yourself with others. The connections in a community are only strong if we allow others to know us fully. We are about to scatter– away from this community, away from family and friends, away from each other. And while we will always have this community to return to, we are losing the foundation that we’ve worked so hard to build here. When you are in your new communities for this next period of your life, find ways to hold onto your individuality. Make connections as authentically you as possible, and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable in that way. Build your foundation as strong as you can, this is our chance to start again– to find new facets within ourselves and be the best versions of who we can be. Take all that you’ve learned here, the kindness, patience, respect, organization, forgiveness, all of it– and build yourself a new community, with unity grounded in a collective understanding of the importance of individualism and connections. The motto You Belong Here doesn’t just mean you belong at SAS. It means you belong here on this earth, and the world is better for it.
Thank you for everything you have given me, and everything you will give the world–our global community is stronger for it. Thank you.
O God, who through the love and labor of many, has built upon this mountain a goodly heritage, and has crowned our school with honor and length of days, we give thanks for past achievements and future hopes accomplished in our midst; but chiefly do we offer gratitude for the gift of your son Jesus Christ, who is the cornerstone of our life together, and the revealer of all truth. May we, and all who follow after us, maintain a zealous quest for learning and wisdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
