Dear Prospective Families,
Greetings once again from St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School and our beautiful snow-covered campus!
At SAS, our mission to cultivate Challenge. Balance. Joy. informs everything we do, from academic programming to athletics and arts to outdoor education to community service. Like all schools or any company, we constantly strive to improve, and our commitment to considering Challenge. Balance. Joy. in the lives of our students always remains front and center. I have shared this SAS Snapshot with you before, but I ask you to give it another read, as it continues to exemplify the standard of SAS.
As you ponder what makes SAS special and separates us from other schools, I bring your attention to some very unique opportunities our students gain during their SAS journey. As I have expressed, our academic rigor coupled with our co-curricular programming means our students leave here with the tools to succeed at any
college in the country. But at the very core of what we strive to accomplish is sending good and well-balanced humans, who know who they are, into the world beyond our 550-acre campus.
As 8th graders, our students participate in This I Believe, as part of the 8th grade advisory, where they present to our community in McCrory Hall and express who they are and what they value at this particular point in their lives. It is their words, their thoughts, their values, and it is powerful. This I Believe is a semester-long journey culminating at the end of the spring semester. Joy!
As an Episcopal school, we enjoy a rich Anglican heritage and encourage openness and respect for all religions, and our students are encouraged to discover their own process to faith that will provide them with a deeper understanding of life. Our Episcopal heritage and how we approach it can be discovered here.
Inside our faith journey, our senior students gain the opportunity to present a Chapel Talk before the entire community, sharing openly about who they are, what they have discovered, and what they value. Again, it never fails to be a powerful and personal moment for all. A wonderful compliment to the senior Chapel Talk is the senior Creedal Statement. All seniors enroll in the same religion class with our school Chaplain and study different faiths and spiritual concepts. The class culminates with our seniors delivering a very personal Creedal Statement to a select group of their choosing at their favorite spot on campus. Students dig deeply into their soul and share their own very personal journey of belief.
Again, highlighting our 8th grade This I Believe and our senior Chapel Talks and Creedal Statements provide an insight into what we mean when we say Challenge. Balance. Joy. Yes, academic preparation is a must, and we also believe that developing the soul is even more important. Joy!
Last, enjoy a sample of our weekly newsletter, SASAFACTS, which keeps our entire community informed on the recent news and what might be coming up next for students, faculty, and parents.
