Greetings from the Mountain!
By studying our website, it is clear that we hang our hat on Challenge. Balance. Joy. We embrace these words in all that we do and our academic programming paints a wonderful picture of this. As you follow the links I provide below, please look for words and phrases like academic rigor, depth over breadth, place-based study, off-campus study, Cumberland Scholars, the Sewanee Experience, small class size, advanced curriculum, elective options, variety of choice, and much more.
At the core of our curriculum you will discover a liberal arts education, where our students dive into literature, history, mathematics, language, the arts, physical sciences, and social sciences. Designed to educate the whole person in a balanced way, the liberal arts curriculum creating a critical thinker and a life-long learner. The
liberal arts education exposes students to these core areas to create a broad knowledge of the wider world around them, preparing students to embrace a complex and ever changing world.
One of our most important educators is 19th Century educator and philosopher, Cardinal John Henry Newman. One way he expresses the purpose of the liberal arts is to make you ever ready, but never in the way. Like a farmer who wisely avoids growing only one crop, the liberal arts cultivate many types of knowledge in you so that you are ever ready when situations change. This is certainly reflected here at SAS, and you will see how we embrace it by doing a deep dive into the links provided below.
Please enjoy these links that express the core values of our academic programming that is special and unique to SAS, again setting us apart from other schools regionally and nationally.
