Endowment
SAS’s endowment serves as a permanent, self-sustaining resource for the long-term health and success of the school. Nearly half of our endowment is specifically earmarked to benefit financial aid, allowing us to uphold a primary tenet of our mission and our heritage.
The endowment consists of 52 individual funds with a June 30, 2024 market value of $28,939,532. These funds generated $1.1 million in revenues for the 2024-2025 school year. Distributions are based on a conservative, Board of Trustees-approved distribution of 6% (calculated using a trailing three-year moving average of annual market values). SAS uses this method to smooth large year-over-year changes in market value, thereby, allowing the School to reasonably predict future distributions.

Thank you, Mr. Sjolund, for the introduction. Thank you to all of the teachers who have been role models, friends, and mentors for us to make it to this point. Thank you to my family for all traveling to be here and constantly supporting me every single day. And thank you to everyone in this senior class for being loving, accepting and motivated to help us all be so successful.
When I was a kid, if I couldn’t sleep at night, I would often go out into the hallway between my sister’s room and my room. Sometimes, I would watch whatever tv that my dad was watching while I stood on the balcony overlooking the living room. Other times, I would just lay in the hallway and for some reason, that would help me fall asleep. Most of the time, my dad somehow knew that was there, because I would often wake up in my own bed the next morning. One night, while I was staring at the ceiling on the balcony, I had a crazy existential crisis, that after Elementary school, you would go to middle school, high school, college, then your job, and suddenly, your whole life had been washed away and the work never ended. did not know that retirement existed. As the pit in my stomach grew, while I thought I was never going to stop working, I felt like my life was going to get swamped in work. I imagined myself working a 9-5 every single day until died. Where would have any time for fun? How could continue to play tackle football in the front yard every weekend with my best friends? When would I ever build forts in the woods?
There is this idea, that is somewhat hardwired into every kid’s brain, that school is dreadful because they make you do work. While homework obviously isn’t the most joyous activity out there, when I think about the happiness that school brings me, I think more about the relationships I have. Look at the people around you. Would they be in your life if it wasn’t for school? One of my favorite aspects about school is lunch. Admittedly, this is partially because there is food, but I love how we all sit in the quad when it’s nice out, trying to squeeze as many people as possible into the picnic tables. On a day to day basis, that was always my favorite part.
I remember one time, I was given a piece of advice about relationships with people. It goes about as follows: imagine the people you have in your life are butterflies. If you chase them and don’t let them have their own space, they will fly away. But if you build a beautiful garden, if you work hard to love and better yourself, then the butterflies will come to you. And if they don’t, then at least you will have a beautiful garden. Personally, I know what it feels like to chase friends, to try to hang out with people who don’t seem to want to hang out with you. It’s not a great feeling. But this taught me an important lesson about self-growth. Once a person steps on their path to better themselves, and nothing is going to stop them, then the relationships flow much easier.
When I think about our senior class this year, there’s a reason we’re so interconnected. It’s a really special thing that our class has so many of these lengthy relationships with each other, some going all the way back to Pre-K. I’ve seen tectonic shifts in friend groups, but
nothing more drastic than the way that I’ve seen the unveiling of everyone’s own self. This past year especially, I’ve felt that we have really embodied the idea of building our own gardens. To give y’all an idea of what I mean, Ben, Hatch and I have been known to get into lengthy political discussions, not necessarily to argue against each other, although maybe partially, but to learn more and expand our perspectives. I see Emery and Sam together in the weight room nearly every day when I’m filling up my water bottle before soccer practice, and Emma has told me a couple of times that she can’t hang out since she has to hermit all weekend in order to finish her university class essay.
However, when I think back about my time at SAS, I’m not going to think about what awards I won or what grades I got; I’m going to think about the adventures I had and the memories I shared with everyone here. I’m going to remember swimming at the Res in the pouring rain while in jeans, falling into a pit of mud in my jeans, or going caving at the sixth grade campout. Yes I was definitely wearing jeans then, too. You’ll notice a pattern here of jeans and dirtiness. Sorry, mom, for making you do that laundry, and sorry to everyone else for wearing skinny jeans almost every day of middle school. Most of y’all know I’m not stylish. I’m also going to remember our class’s passing of the peace together while at the Senior retreat. I think I said peace to every single person in that room while we all reminisced and took the time to appreciate each other.
We’ve definitely had our fair share of troubling moments as a class, whether that is a thunderstorm on the Buffalo River or a quick ambulance ride, it’s fair to say we’re not a class without setbacks. But for all of these experiences, good or bad, these are the things I will remember about SAS. No grade or award will make me feel the joy of winning our first tournament soccer game, the pride I felt to hug Gabin and Ben after we had together gone through tournament losses every single year in all of high school. The contentment that I felt while we chatted around the fire all night during glamping in 10th grade will never be outmatched, even though my peace of mind was temporarily interrupted when Zhuri was playing on her Nintendo Switch at full volume at four in the morning. Of course I try to better myself in my grades and my talent, but also take a deep look into my own life and think, how can I grow my relationships with others? Many of y’all will know how I’m not the most emotional person, but nothing makes me feel more than my relationships with other people. That is how realized the vast importance of the people in my life, whether that is the senior class, my family members, or every other person at this school or in this crowd. No person exists without those around them.
Ultimately, what I’ve aimed to do in high school is find an equilibrium between my social life and my academics. mean, that’s largely what the high school experience is, right? Improving yourself is not possible without those around you, and how are you going to form a relationship with someone if you don’t know yourself first?
So go tell your friends and classmates how much they mean to you. Not just the ones who you’re closest with, but also those who you might not see when you come back to visit. Think about what it might be like to not pass by the people you’ve been used to seeing everyday for the past year, past several years, or for those of y’all who were at SES, even the past decade. Yes, we are that old. You never know the next time you might see these people, so take advantage of the time we have here today. know for sure that I will miss all of y’all.
And now, it’s time for us to go around the world and start planting new flowers in our gardens. That’s the beautiful thing about botany. There’s always varieties of flora to plant or weeds to pick. As we all move on to higher education, to the workforce or otherwise, let’s all learn from this class that we can always be better people. And remember what kind of memories you want to make after you leave here. My ability to balance my social life and academic life will continue to be tested, but I’m confident that I’m leaving my home in an amazing state to do so. This is a chance for us to take what we have learned while at SAS, and to improve on it. While it is sad that we’ll leave here, it’s also a new opportunity to better ourselves and to better those around us. Thank you all, for bettering me. Class of 2025, I love y’all.
St Andrew’sS ewanee School Prayer
O God, who through the love and labor of many, has built upon this mountain a goodly heritage, and has crowned our school with honor and length of days, we give thanks for past achievements and future hopes accomplished in our midst; but chiefly do we offer gratitude for the gift of your son Jesus Christ, who is the cornerstone of our life together, and the revealer of all truth. May we, and all who follow after us, maintain a zealous quest for learning and wisdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
