Challenge Balance Joy

Personalized Challenge, Personalized Support

Did you know that 32% of our senior class graduates with college credit from the University of the South? Through the Sewanee Experience, our qualified juniors and seniors sit in college classrooms, listening to esteemed professors, and leave not only with credit, but with real-world knowledge of how a college classroom operates and what colleges expect of their students.

But the University campus is not the only place our students tackle challenges. With our outdoor-based, mission-driven learning model, our students are engaging deeply and directly with the world around them, including trips to our on-campus archaeology and wetland study sites. With these incredible opportunities comes the school’s commitment to supporting every student that walks through our halls. Between our learning resource coordinator, peer- and teacher- led study sessions, and time to talk with their teachers built into their schedules, our students enjoy succeeding by receiving the support they need along the way.

Outdoor sports including mountain biking and rock climbing on our safe 550 acre campus

In addition to the support we provide for our community, we cultivate well-rounded and balanced people, prepared to tackle not only college, but life as a whole. Our community is diverse and loving, with students from 20 countries and 11 states represented.

80% of our students participate in at least one sport, which we offer in addition to other afternoon programs such as theater, farming, mind, body, exercise, and robust visual and studio arts. Whether you’re trying a new sport for the first time, or a college-bound athlete, we have a place for you.

Our Epsicopal heritage and philosophy encourage students to participate in and engage with their community and their spirituality. Students enjoy ethics and religion classes their 8th grade and 12th grade years, respectively, and are encouraged to sing in our chapel choir, play in our chapel band, give chapel readings, and, as seniors, give chapel talks in which they explain their faith journey to pews full of attentive, loving listeners.

Our beautiful campus enjoys the safety, compassion, and hospitality of a classic Southern town, while our faculty and staff, 70% of which hold advanced degrees from all over the country, share both their knowledge and their advice for life beyond our gates. Our students move to their next steps having been supported and seen during their time here at SAS.

We know that our preparatory education requires an investment of time and energy from our students. In order to keep them balanced in the face of challenges, we ensure that Joy is built into every week, semester, and year.

Our Creative Expression assemblies give students the chance to demonstrate their talents on our McCrory Hall stage, from stand-up comedy to original songs, in front of an enthusiastic and supportive community. Every February, we take a week off of classes, and students choose two unique courses to take throughout Winterim. Classes in the past have included firewood and chainsaw maintenance, and a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail. We watch solar eclipses together, enjoy lunches together, and celebrate our wins together during Community Announcements.

Student-run, interest-based clubs meet once a week during lunch, including the Black Student Union, History Club, and Dungeons & Dragons club All students have the opportunity to take a variety of arts classes, including pottery in our three-kiln studio, film photography, music & theater, and visual arts that cover techniques from collage to sketching to sculpture
