Porter, the Class of 2021 salutatorian and SMA Memorial Merit Award recipient, is attending Washington & Lee University this fall on a full scholarship. “We just took Porter to college and left him in his ‘cozy’ triple occupancy dorm room,” says Alex. “I was not surprised to see the all-school photo from his senior year occupying precious wall space above his bed. I was again reminded of how lucky many of us have been to share this special place.”

AN SAS FAMILY LEGACY This past May, Alex ’91 and Amy Neubauer proudly watched their son, Porter ’21, step on stage to receive an SAS diploma. “Porter graduating 30 years after me made me realize I am not as young as I used to be!” Alex recalls. “It also highlights the fact that SAS is aging very well. The history of education on The Mountain is rich and long, and SAS is still committed to upholding this tradition. I believe that what SAS teachers selflessly offer inside and, especially, outside the classroom is what really makes an education on The Mountain so special.”

Also following in their father’s footsteps are Libby ’23 and Caroline ’26. This school year, Caroline is looking forward to pottery, farming, and adventure education.

Libby is particularly excited about outing programs and is looking forward to the possibility of planning a girls only backpacking trip.

When asked why they choose to give to the SAS Fund, Alex and Amy said, “SAS has many gifts to offer. The school’s location offers experiential learning and incredible recreational opportunities, and SAS welcomes students from many backgrounds and cultivates their unique interests so that each may find his or her place in the school and beyond. But driving all of those wonderful things are the teachers. They are the lifeblood of SAS. Our kids have thrived because their teachers are so invested in both their learning and their personal and emotional development. They give generously of themselves to the students and to the school — so we give in honor of them.”

Teresa Outlaw StA ’82

TAKING A NEW PATH SAS Alumni Council member Teresa Outlaw StA ’82 was recently named Head of School at CASA Esperanza Montessori Charter School in Raleigh. The school blends a Montessori education with Spanish immersion and enrichment programs and serves nearly 600 students from preschool through 8th grade.

Likening her path to Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”, Teresa says, “My life has been a bit of an evolution.” Teresa spent twenty years in human resources, working with all kinds of organizations from mom and pop’s to Fortune 500 companies. Then, after moving to Cary, North Carolina, she decided to try a new path and spent time serving on several local boards — including a charter Montessori school where her children were enrolled. “Being on that board and having my children at that school exposed me to the opportunity to work with schools. I grew my passion for education from there.” This sent her in a new direction; after earning her master’s degree in Special Education she taught in the local school system for several years before earning her Master’s in School Administration. From there, she worked as an administrator in several schools before moving on to become a Senior Administrator for Special Education Services for Wake County, one of the largest school districts in the nation. This breadth of experiences made her uniquely positioned to take on the role of Head of School at Casa Esperanza.

“All of these different paths I took led me to this space where I’m just absolutely delighted to be.”

Her willingness to try new paths dates back to her days on The Mountain. “One of the really neat things about being at St. Andrew’s was that I could dip my toe into many different things,” says Teresa. “I was able to be in chorus, theater, volleyball, and cross country. Just like at SAS today, they made sure that students could get involved. If you had an interest, they made a way for you to be able to learn about it.”

As to what motivates her support for SAS today, Teresa says, “St. Andrew’s has always really, truly been in my heart. You could find your family, your people, no matter who you were. It was small enough that you knew everyone, and our teachers were like parents. It was a really neat place to grow and to mature and to learn.

Teachers back then were doing things that are considered innovative today. We were learning outside, and now a lot of other schools are following suit. When something is in your heart you want to take care of it. That’s why I’ve chosen to include SAS not just in my monthly giving, but also in my will. I live nine hours away, but I come back to campus as often as I can to offer my services. That’s what I want to do — give back to the place that I feel gave me so much.”
