THE GAMES MUST GO ON! E
very February, St. Pius X Baseball players from decades past gather for the Annual Alumni Game to kick off the
spring season. This year, SPX Softball was scheduled to join the festivities and host their inaugural Alumni Game. The players were invited, the jerseys were ordered and an after-event gathering for the players and the alumni was planned. However, on the Friday before the games, Albuquerque weather began to change as the temperature dropped and storm clouds rolled in. Knowing that several alumni were in route for the game, the Coaches and Athletic Department Staff decided that the games would go on!

As luck would have it, it snowed all evening and standing snow on the fields brought on a new challenge. Despite the snow, Sartan spirit prevailed and several Baseball and Softball Alumni from the last three decades arrived the morning of the games to play ball. Coach Doyle stated before the first pitch, “This is a great way to bring the past and future of our program together.” The SPX Softball Team was able to clear the field with the help of our dedicated parents and the Alumni prevailed with a 15-4 victory over varsity. Lorriane Trujillo Martinez ’83 was thrilled with the experience, “I’d like to thank SPX and especially the girls for being so welcoming to me after so many years off the field. I had a great time! I can’t move like I did 36 years ago but it was really fun to get back out there.” Unfortunately, the baseball field was not able to be cleared due to the amount of snow and field position so the annual baseball game had to be redirected. The boys, coaches and alumni made the best of the situation and headed into the gym for a free throw contest and inspirational speech by Coach Matt McCoy ’89, “I am lucky that I have been able to spend time with the young men that have passed through the baseball program over the last 12 years. Each team builds a bond that lasts a lifetime during their time here. I want to thank these men for coming back today and I encourage you boys to ask them questions and learn from their experiences, both on and off the field.” A huge thank you to all the SPX Alumni that attended, either as a player or fan, the SPX Varsity Teams and our dedicated coaching staff led by Coach Matt McCoy ’89, Coach Gary Romero ’87 and Priscilla Doyle ’05.

Winter Wrap Up BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL Boys Varsity Basketball had a record of 15-12 for the 2018-19 season. The Sartans finished second at the Stu Clark Invitational, second at the Hope Christian Invitational, and finished the year in second place in the district tournament. GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL Girls Varsity Basketball finished the regular season with an overall record of 18-8. The girls finished in second place in the district regular season with a record of 5-3. The team finished runner-up in the district tournament. The Lady Sartans received a seventh seed for the state tournament and lost to Hope in the first round of state. WINTER WRAP UP
SWIM
Winter was a great season for the St. Pius X Swim Team. Both the girls and the boys won two meets and took second place in two additional. The swimmers progressed steadily over the last few years, culminating second place finishes at The District Championships for both teams. The Sartans qualified for six relays for The State Championships, and all six swimmers advanced to the finals. Standout swimmers who qualified individually for the State Championships were Davin Ruggles (12), Rebecca Restrepo (12), Christopher Perea (10) and Leo Kim (9). All four of these swimmers moved on to the finals. Sartan swimmers finished second place at District! The girls Medley Relay qualified for State.

WRESTLING
SPX Wrestling, under the direction of Head Coach Damacio Page, is proving to be an up and coming athletic program at St. Pius X High School.

In the two years he has been the Head Wrestling Coach, Coach Page has made SPX a known force in the wrestling community. In the 2018-2019 season, four St. Pius X Wrestlers went to the State Championships and brought home the First and Second Place State Titles in two different weight classes.

WINTER WRAP UP
DORADOS TRAVEL ADVENTURES
Talk about an amazing way to end 2018…a group of dancers from the SPX Dorados Varsity Dance Team bid farewell to 2018 at a Vespers and Eucharistic Benediction led by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. Over Christmas break, eight Dorados traveled to Rome, Italy to dance in Rome’s New Year’s Day Parade. These Dorados were invited to Rome because they were each selected as a Universal Dance Association All-American Dancer. To receive this honor, a dancer must go through an audition process and then be selected by the judging

panel. The Dorados had an astounding ten dancers named All-Americans this year. Our All-Americans are: Elizabeth Freisinger (12), Morgan Henson (10), D’Andra Leyba (11), Patricia Lujan (11), Isabella Sais (12), Madeline Skipp (11), Amanda Stone (12), Allyson Thomas (10), Megan Thomas (12), and Donielle Torres (10). While in Italy, our traveling Dorados went to the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Piazza del Popolo, the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and more. They also had the opportunity to visit Florence.
In early February 2019, the Dorados traveled to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida to compete in the National Dance Team Championship (NDTC). The Dorados competed in the small varsity jazz category against almost 100 of the best dance teams in the country. It is exciting to travel outside of New Mexico and see what is going on in dance in other parts of the country. Even more thrilling, is the feeling of stepping with your teammates onto the NDTC stage Tryouts for the 2019-2020 Dorados Dance Team and the SPX JV Dance Team will be in early May 2019. Matthew McCoy is a 1989 graduate of St. Pius X High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Wayland Baptist University. In 2015, he retired as a Sergeant from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department. Coach McCoy began his coaching career at St. Pius X as a volunteer C Team Baseball Coach in 2007. He has been an assistant and head coach at all levels of the baseball program and was promoted to Head Varsity Coach in 2017. Coach McCoy was an assistant coach in 2013, the last time the baseball program took home the state title. As the Head Coach, Coach McCoy has two District Championships and appeared in the State Semifinals twice, losing both times to the eventual State Champion. He has also coached football at St. Pius X and has been a Varsity Assistant for the last two years.

Coach McCoy feels lucky that he has been able to surround himself with great assistant coaches, “This is an amazing staff and most importantly these coaches are great role
models for the young men that come out of the baseball program.” Coach McCoy would like to publicly thank Athletic Director Jim Cook ’83, for the opportunity to coach these amazing young men, and the entire athletic department; Ashley Turcotte ’07, Jennifer Maldonado ’91 and Juanita Marquez for all of the hard work they do on a daily basis to keep all the athletic programs rolling along.

PRISCILLA GARCIA DOYLE ’05 5 YEARS AS A COACH 5 YEARS AS A HEAD COACH AT SPX SPX RECORD: 29-77 DISTRICT TITLES: 1
Coach Doyle is a 2005 graduate of St. Pius X High School. She was a varsity athlete all four years and a member of the All State First Team in 2003 and 2004. After graduation, she attended Western New Mexico University on an athletic scholarship and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Instruction and Curriculum. She is a School Instructional Coach at Madison Middle School. Coach Doyle began her coaching career as the Varsity Pitching Coach at Atrisco Heritage in 2012. In 2015, she returned to St.

JEFF TURCOTTE
31 YEARS AS A COACH 29 YEARS AS ST. PIUS X HEAD TRACK & FIELD COACH Coach Jeff Turcotte was a General Motors "brat" who grew up in Michigan, Florida, Washington, Colorado and Nebraska before settling in New Mexico. He began his athletic career in Scottsbluff, Nebraska as a competitive water skier. As a teenager, he was on the path to become a slalom competitor until he moved to Albuquerque his junior year in high school. He is a 1980 graduate of Eldorado High School and was a 4-year varsity athlete in cross country, track & field and basketball. Post high school, he attended The University of New Mexico and graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. During his time at UNM, he walked on to the UNM Track & Field Team his freshman year and earned an athletic scholarship after his second year, lettering seven times in track & field and cross country. Coach Turcotte began coaching in 1988 on an old dirt track at the original St. Pius X Louisiana campus. He took over as the Head Track Coach in 1990 and has been on the new campus’ dirt track ever since. In 1993, he was hired by Fr. Ronald Schwenzer to be the Director of Student Activities. He is currently the Director of Marketing and Enrollment at St. Pius X. During his long

tenure at SPX, he has held many official and unofficial roles and both of his daughters, Ashley Turcotte ’07 and Tessa Turcotte Houser ’09 are graduates. It is often said about Coach Turcotte that he bleeds black and gold and breathes St. Pius! Running and fitness have been a lifetime commitment
for Coach Turcotte, and he encourages his athletes to continue to “run for life” beyond high school. Coach Turcotte is assisted by Gabe Aragon, Dan Fant, Juan Garcia, Matt Larranaga ‘95 , Jennifer Pollard and Neil Silver, who originally hired Coach Turcotte in 1988.

CHRIS POTTER
28 YEARS AS A COACH 2 YEARS AS THE BOYS HEAD COACH AT SPX SPX BOYS RECORD: 13-10 1 YEAR AS THE GIRLS HEAD COACH AT SPX SPX GIRLS RECORD: 8-3 Chris Potter is beginning his 3rd year coaching at St. Pius X High School. He has a wealth of experience entering his 28th year coaching. Coach Potter has coached a wide range of tennis players from six and under to senior clinics and athletes from the ITF World Tennis Tour Pro Circuit. Coach Potter attended Mars Hill University near Asheville, North Carolina where he received a Bachelor’s Degree. He later obtained his Master’s from Baylor University and one week after graduation was hired as the Mens Tennis Coach at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina. Coach Potter remained at Pfeiffer for over a decade and during that time took his team to the National Championship twice. Three of his former players went on to have an ATP/ITF ranking.

On the boys team, Coach Potter has had a two-time state qualifier and one doubles team qualifier for the New Mexico State Tournament. In 2018, the girls team had a one-time state qualifier and one doubles qualifier for the New Mexico State Tournament. The SPX Girls Doubles Team finished 4th in the 2018 State Tournament. 45 YEARS AS A COACH 37 YEARS AS A HEAD COACH AT SPX IN SOCCER AND GOLF STATE TITLES: 1 STATE RUNNER UP: 3 STATE INDIVIDUAL TITLES: 2 DISTRICT TITLES: 6 Coach Jorge Tristani began his athletic career playing soccer at St. Albans Episcopal Boarding School in Washington, D.C. From prep school to graduate school, he continued to play intramurals. In 1973, he became a varsity coach at a boarding school in upstate New York. In 1981, Coach Tristani moved to Albuquerque to pursue his career as an architect. He began playing in a men’s league and resumed coaching with AYSO and Duke City Soccer. That is when he was recruited by a St. Pius X parent to take over a brand-new soccer program that had lost its coach after the first season. He was hired on the spot by Coach Ray Giannini, and the rest is history. At the time, St. Pius X was a 3A school. However, from 1982–1993, the St. Pius X Sartans played up with the “big boys” in the 4A division, and won three State Championship titles. In the Fall of 1982, Coach Tristani became a full-time teacher by accident when openings in Spanish and drafting became available at SPX. His class load over the years included Spanish, Russian, mechanical and architectural drawing, photography and art history. During his twenty-four years as the Head Varsity Soccer Coach at St. Pius X, Coach Tristani won a total of 15 State Soccer Championships. He strived to communicate both in the classroom and on the field precise goals because that’s what he believed would lead to excellence in both venues. The thrill of dealing with kids that bought into this mission of excellence is what inspired him to take on coaching a

In 2006, Coach Tristani handed over the reins of the soccer program to Michael Strati ’91, his Assistant Coach of eleven years and member of his first State Championship Team. In May of 2018, Coach Tristani retired after 34 years of teaching at St. Pius X High School. In honor of the man and the legend, St. Pius X renamed Coors Fields “Campo de Jorge” at the annual alumni soccer games in the fall. It was a tribute to the great man that influenced so many players
and students during his tenure at SPX. During retirement, Coach Tristani spends most of his free time traveling between Puerto Rico, Utah and Arizona where his son, Michael Tristani ’92 and his grandson, Bryke live. He is also still a regular familiar face around the halls of SPX as a substitute teacher in addition to coaching boys golf. He has an impressive record holding 21 state trophies in soccer and golf and two individuals in golf.

CHRIS MOYA
1 YEAR AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL COACH 3 YEARS AS SPX VARSITY AND JV COACH SPX RECORD: 36 EVENTS, 27 WINS, 8 RUNNERS-UP DISTRICT TITLES: 3 STATE TITLES: 1 STATE RUNNER UP: 2 STATE INDIVIDUAL TITLE: 1 STATE INDIVIDUAL RUNNER UP: 2 Coach Chris Moya is a 1979 graduate of Albuquerque High School. He was a two-sport varsity athlete, playing golf and basketball. He was on the 1978 State Champion Golf Team and the 1978 Runnerup Basketball Team. He then attended University of Albuquerque where he graduated with a BS in Criminal Law with a focus in Pre-law in 1984. Post-graduation, Coach Moya worked for the Albuquerque Police Department as a Crime Scene Detective. Coach Moya has also been a member of the PGA since 1991. Coach Moya has spent almost his whole life on a golf course having been employed at Los Altos Golf Course since 1975 under his lifelong mentors, his father, Eddie Moya and his uncle, Billy Moya. At ages 91 and 94, they continue to educate and inspire him daily. He has worked every aspect of the golf course as an instructor, manager and even as a cook in the kitchen. Coach Moya began his coaching career at St. Pius X in 2014. He was coaching future Sartan, Cindy Herrera ’18 who at the time was an incoming freshman. At the time, SPX was in need of a girls golf coach and a practice site. Coach Moya agreed to allow the team to practice at Los Altos Golf Course and applied for the vacant position. He was hired as the Instructional Coach under the new head Coach Maxcine Bates. The team consisted of all freshmen and Coach Moya believed they possessed the talent and drive to be State Champions with the proper instruction. The following 16

year, Coach Bates stepped down and Coach Moya became the Head Coach for the 2015-2016 season. Coach Moya felt such gratification and an enormous sense of accomplishment from all the work and practice that he and the girls experienced that he wanted to continue the winning tradition! Throughout his career, he has coached State Champions such as January Romero, 4-time State Champion of Albuquerque Academy 1998-2001, and Hillary Semanek of La Cueva High School in 2000, but never a team that was so determined to be the first St. Pius X Girls Golf State Champions. Coach Moya’s tenure at SPX has been short but fruitful. Four of his players from the 2018 State Champion Team are now competing at the collegiate level on scholarship. His goal is to continue to send such deserving student athletes onto secondary education and a chance to compete at the next level. The team not only shows talent and ambition on the green, they currently hold the highest
average GPA (3.8) of the spring sports. He would also like to thank Coaches Maxcine Bates (2014-15) and Roy Turpin (2017-2018) for their contributions to the success of the St. Pius X Girls Golf Program.

DARYL WELLS
7 YEARS AS A COACH 4 YEARS AS A HEAD COACH AT SPX STATE TITLES: 2 STATE RUNNERS UP: 1 Coach Daryl Wells, a California native, graduated from Homestead High School where he began his swim career as an MVP in both swimming and water polo. He then went on to serve 6 years in the United States Air Force and completed his education at Cal Poly Architecture School and Virginia Tech. In 1986, at 19 years old, he began coaching water polo in the highly competitive Central Coast Section in California where he began his winning streak. Coach Wells holds many accolades including, New Mexico High School Water Polo Coach of the Year, New Mexico Swimming Coach of the Year and New Mexico Swimming Volunteer of the Year for work with the New Mexico Swimming Zones AllStar Team. He also serves as the New Mexico Swimming Age Group Chair and has been a club swim coach for the last 7 years. Since 2015, Coach Wells has quadrupled both team numbers, building the SPX Water Polo Program to a group of fierce and competitive student athletes. This year, the teams consist of a boys team of exclusively
St. Pius X players and a girls team, with just three players from outside the Sartan ranks. Coach Wells successfully runs and owns an award-winning design studio with his wife, New Mexico Santera Retablo Artist, Sean Wells. They have two sons, Phoenix and Griffin who also swim and play water polo. Coach Wells is assisted by SPX Alum, Coach Nicholas Christman ’16.

Retired Col. Mark Neice is entering his 17th year as the volunteer Rugby Coach at St. Pius X High School. He began his athletic career at his high school in Hurley, WI where he was a multi-sport varsity athlete in football, wrestling and track. He was accepted to and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy where he developed his love of rugby. In addition to playing rugby at the Air Force Academy, Coach Neice played football and was a boxer. While flying for the United States Air Force, Col. Neice played rugby for 15 years before an injury forced his early playing retirement. He then became a referee and carried that on for 25 years. Coach Neice has a total of 42 years invested in the game of rugby as a player, referee and coach. Rugby is considered a club team and The St. Pius X Ruggers consists of male and female
