MATH6 ThecurriculumwillimplementNextGenerationMathStandards. Studentswill receiveinstructioninfiveareas:(1)connectingratioandratetowholenumbermultiplication anddivisionandusingconceptsofratioandratetosolveproblems;(2)completing understandingofdivisionoffractionsandextendingthenotionofnumbertothesystemof rationalnumbers,whichincludesnegativenumbers;(3)writing,interpreting,andusing expressionsandequations;(4)deepeningunderstandingofarea,surfaceareaandvolume;and (5)developingunderstandingofsimpleprobabilitiesandstatisticalthinking.Studentuseof calculatorsisdeterminedbylearningobjectives.
MATH7 ThecurriculumwillimplementNextGenerationMathStandards. Studentswill receiveinstructioninthreeareas:(1)developingunderstandingofandapplyingproportional relationships;(2)developingunderstandingofoperationswithrationalnumbersandworking withexpressionsandlinearequations;and(3)drawinginferencesaboutpopulationsbasedon samples. Studentuseofcalculatorsisdeterminedbylearningobjectives.

Inthiscourse,studentswilllearntheconceptsofcomputationandunderstandthe propertiesofrealnumbers.Studentswillbecomecomfortablewithusinglettersandsymbolsto translateproblemsintoalgebraicform.Inaddition,theywilllearnhowtosolveandgraphlinear equationsandinequalities.Studentswillbecomecomfortablewiththeslopeofalineandhowit representstherateofchangeofthetwovariables.Studentswillalsolearnabouttwo-and three-dimensionalshapesandtheirproperties.Withinthis,studentswillcalculateperimeter,area, circumference,surfaceareaandvolumeoftheseshapes.Additionally,studentswillunderstandthe PythagoreanTheoremandbeabletoexplainwhyitistrue.Thestudentswillalsoapplyconceptsof probabilityinavarietyofways.Studentuseofcalculatorsisdeterminedbylearningobjectives.
ALGEBRAI
Thiscourseprovidesthefoundationforallsubsequentmathcourses.Studentsare introducedtothebasicstructureofalgebrathroughtheuseandapplicationofrealnumbers, polynomials,factoring,linearandquadraticequationsandtheirgraphs,inequalitiesandrationaland irrationalnumbers.Thiscoursewillprovideopportunitiesforstudentstobuildtheirthinkingand problem-solvingskills.Studentuseofcalculatorsisdeterminedbylearningobjectives.
HONORSALGEBRA&GEOMETRY
Thiscourseisdesignedforfreshmenstudentswithhigher abilityinmathematics.Itisfast-paced,asstudentsareexpectedtolearnandapplyskillsmorequickly thanstudentsinAlgebraI.Thefallsemestercoversallmaterialofregularalgebra(firstand second-degreeequations,lines,inequalities,radicals,polynomials,andwordproblems)aswellas someAlgebraIItopics,includingcomplexnumbersandsyntheticdivision.TheSpringsemesteris comparabletoafullcourseingeometry.Topicsincludeparallelism,triangletheorems,formalproofs, similarity,circleproperties,quadrilaterals,areaoftwo-dimensionalfigures,andsurfaceareasand volumeofthree-dimensionalfigures.
Prerequisite: Having taken a previous course in algebra is not a requirement. Entrance to this class is determined by qualifying placement entrance exam scores and grades.Nowithdrawalswillbeallowed afterweek7ofschool.
GEOMETRY
This course is designed to helpthestudentunderstandthebasicstructureofplane,solid, and coordinategeometry.Studentswilldevelopproblem-solvingskillsandpowersofvisualization.They will also build their knowledge of the relationship among geometric elements and will increase their understanding of the inductive and deductive methods of reasoning. HONORS SPANISH I Honors Spanish I is an accelerated Spanish I course covering all the basic concepts and cultural items taught in Spanish I regularly. Studentswillexplorepatternsofchangeincontinuitybyfocusingontheexpansionofandthedecline ofcivilizations,patternsofgeography,anddevelopmentofpolitical,economic,andsocietalsystemsin theEasternhemisphere.Theywillcompareandcontrastancientcivilizations,theMediterraneanWorld, feudalWesternEurope,theByzantineEmpire,andtheIslamiccaliphateastheyanalyzeandevaluate howfoundationsofsocietyinfluencethemodernera.
NMHISTORY7(semester) ThiscourseexploresNewMexico’shistoryfromitsacquisitionbythe UnitedStatestothepresent.Thisincludesanexaminationofourstate’scontributionstoand involvementinthemajorpolitical,cultural,andeconomiceventsinthe20thcenturyincludingWWI, theGreatDepression,WWII,theColdWar,andtheCivilRightsMovement.Studentswillberequired tousecriticalthinkingskillsinbothclassdiscussionsandcreativeprojectsalongwithindividual “explorations”ofNewMexico.
U.S.HISTORY7(semester) Inthiscourse,studentswillmakeconnectionsacrosstimeaswellas understandeconomic,socialandpoliticaltrendsastheyexaminethehistoryoftheUnitedStates. Studentswilldeterminetheinfluenceofgeographicfactorsandnaturalresourcesonthedevelopment ofNativeAmericanandcolonialsocietiesandcultures,themovementforindependence,westward expansion,reformmovements,andthegrowthofsectionalismthroughtheCivilWar.Thehistorical developmentoftheU.S.Constitution,ourfoundationaldocumentsandtheinstitutionsofour governmentwillbeafocus.

THEOLOGY6 God’speoplethroughouthistoryandtodayarechallengedtofollowtheteachings ofJesusandHisancestorsasseeninHebrewandChristianScriptures. Bytheendofsixthgrade studentswillrecognizehowGodrevealshimselfinScriptureandtradition,withanemphasison salvationhistory,understandtheirroleaspartofafamily,churchandcommunityaswellasdevelop theirownprayerlifeespeciallyusingScripture,aspartofadeepeningrelationshipwithGod.

Inthiscourse,studentswilllearnthestructureandhistoryoftheChurch.The primaryfocusoftheclassisidentifyinganddescribingthefoundationsoftheChurch.Studentswill lookatthefirst500yearsofChurchhistoryandhowitformedthefoundationofthemodern-day Church.StudentswillbuildupontheknowledgeoftheGospelsinordertoproperlyunderstandthe foundationsuponwhichtheChurchwasbuiltwhilecontinuingtodeveloptheirfamiliaritywiththe Bible.Eachstudentwillalsoexaminetheimpactofsaints,Churchleadersandimportanteventsthat shapedChristianity.Abasicintroductiontoethicsandmoralityisalsointerwoventhroughoutthe themesofthiscourse.

ART TheArtclassisgearedtowardthestudentwhohasaninterestinartandwouldliketolearn moreaboutandexplorebasicarttechniquesandmediums.Basicdrawingandshadingtechniqueswill bestudiedwithvariousmediasuchaspencil,penandinkandcharcoal.Compositionalvalueswillalso bestudiedsuchasbalance(symmetrical,asymmetricalandradial)aswellasfocalpointsofinterest culminatinginvariouscontent-orientedfinishedworks.
CULINARYARTS
Thiscoursewillenablestudentstodevelopvariousskillsinfoodpreparationand presentation.Therewillbetheopportunityforweeklylabs,enablingthestudentstolearnand demonstratecookingskills(andeatthefoodtheyprepare),increasetheirknowledgeofavarietyof foods,andbecomeself-sufficientinthekitchen.Thecurriculumincludesnutrition,regionaland internationalfoods,theartisticpresentationoffoods,tablesettingsandmealplanning,purchasing food,sanitation,andsafety.
DRAMAThecourseisanintroductiontoactingandthetheater. Thestudentwilllearntheelements ofstageacting,bothindividuallyandinsmallgroupsaswellasunderstandingthebasicsofthetheater space. Emphasiswillbeplacedondramaticelements,vocalwork,improvisation,physicalmovement. Studentswillstudydramaticliterature,monologuesandscenework.Thisclassisdesignedasa foundationalcourseforfurtherstudyintheater.
STUDIOART8(fullyear)
StudioArtclassisgearedtowardthestudentwhohasaninterestinart andwouldliketolearnmoreaboutandexplorebasicarttechniquesandmediums.Theclasswillfocus heavilyondrawinganddesigntechniquesinthefirstsemesterandthenwillshifttowatercolor paintingtechniquesandfinallythree-dimensionalprojectsinthefourthquarter Basicdrawingand shadingtechniqueswillbestudiedwithvariousmediasuchaspencil,penandinkandcharcoal. BEGINNINGCHOIR
Thiscourseisdesignedforstudentswithlittleornochoralexperiencewho wishtolearnthebasics.Anemphasisisplacedonthedevelopmentofsight-singing,vocaltechniques, performingandgeneralmusicalknowledge.Thisensemblewillperformmusicatallconcertsandin conjunctionwiththeBelCantoConcertChoir.Thestudentwillberequiredtoparticipateinall school-sponsoredperformances,workshopsandclinics,andallspecialevents.
INSTRUMENTALMUSIC
BEGINNINGBAND
TheBeginningBandisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithanintroductory experienceonbandinstruments. Thecurriculumforthiscourseisanextensionoftheskillsand conceptsintroducedinGeneralMusicclasses.Priorinstrumentalmusicexperienceisnotrequired.
BEGINNINGORCHESTRA
TheBeginningOrchestraisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithan introductoryexperienceonstringinstruments.Thecurriculumforthiscourseisanextensionofthe skillsandconceptsintroducedinGeneralMusicclasses.Priorinstrumentalmusicexperienceisnot required.
PHYSICALEDUCATIONDEPARTMENT
PHYSICALEDUCATION/HEALTH(6/7Semester:8FullYear)
Thiscoursewillincludeboth physicalandhealtheducationconceptsandapplications.Itisdesignedtoprovidestudentswiththe skills,knowledge,andattitudesessentialforachievingabalancedandhealthylifestyle.Thematerial coveredinthiscoursewillprovidethefoundationforstudentstomakeinformeddecisionsregarding theirmentalandphysicalwell-beingthroughoutlife.Additionally,studentswillengageinroutine physicalexercisedesignedtoimprovetheiroverallbaselevelofphysicalconditioning. AnystudentwhoearnsoneFforthe4thquarter,hasno2nd-semesterfailures,andwhose2ndsemester GPAisabove2.0,willnotbeallowedtoparticipateinanysummerteamactivities,butwillbeallowedtotry outforandparticipateinfallsportsorextra-curricularorco-curricularactivitiesstartingonAugust1st.Any studentwhohascompletedall2ndsemestercoursework,andwhohasearneda2ndsemesterGPAof2.0or betterbuthasfailedonlyoneclassforthe2ndsemestermaybecomeeligibleonAugust1st,ifthatstudent hassuccessfullycompletedacreditrecoveryclassatSt.Piusforthe2ndsemesterfailure.Ifacredit recoveryclassisnotavailableatSt.Pius,thestudentmustgettheapprovaloftheAssistantPrincipalof Academicstocompletethecreditrecoverycoursethroughanapprovedprogram.Whenthecreditrecovery gradeisreceivedandenteredintothestudent’sacademicrecord,the2ndsemesterGPAmustremainabovea 2.0forthestudenttobeeligibletoparticipateonAugust1st.
