St. Pius X School - English Department Summer 2026 Reading Assignments Overview & Expectations An important part of our shared mission is helping every Sartan grow intellectually and morally through thoughtful engagement with literature. Throughout the school year, our English Department carefully selects texts and plans instruction to keep students reading, thinking, discussing, and writing as they grow in wisdom and skill. One way we encourage continued literacy growth over the summer is through our required summer reading assignment. Every student is asked to acquire and read at least one assigned book that serves as the focus of instruction and assessment at the start of the school year. These texts are selected to be manageable to read in the final weeks of summer, appropriate in complexity and content for each grade level, and launch meaningful discussion, analysis, and writing as soon as classes begin. As we continue reviewing our academic program for our growing and increasingly diverse student body from grades 6-12, we have focused on balancing academic rigor with students’ need for rest and renewal. While we believe the summer reading assignment is valuable, we do not believe it serves students well to spend the entire summer completing academic work. Students need time to rest, pursue their own interests, participate in summer programs, and gain valuable life experiences--travel, adventure, or summer jobs. In light of this, we have adjusted and defined our overall expectations for the English Department’s summer reading assignments. We have reduced the number and length of assigned texts, removed required projects and formal notetaking, and coordinated with other departments to better manage students’
