Staff Networks

We recognise that our staff are our biggest asset, and that staff who feel supported and well represented are more likely to achieve job satisfaction. We are committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive culture, where staff have an opportunity to share the challenges that they may experience belonging to a marginalised group.

The Trust currently has three Staff Networks to represent these marginalised groups. Please find more information on these below.

BAME Staff Network

Our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Staff Network aims to empower BAME staff to achieve their potential through creating positive change.

The Network aims to keep staff up to date with the latest information on COVID-19 and other BAME issues and priorities that the Network will focus on.

Disability and Allies Staff Network

The Disability and Allies Network is dedicated to supporting and promoting equality or people with disabilities within Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Network aims to listen, support and represent staff with disabilities and those with caring responsibilities.

LGBTQ+ and Allies Staff Network

LGBTQ+ is an acronym used to describe people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and all other identities i.e. non-binary. The aim of this Network is to provide a supportive environment where all LGBTQ+ staff can share information and be heard about areas that need development.

Freedom to Speak Up

Patient safety is paramount at Bedfordshire Hospitals and all staff have a duty to raise concerns so we can learn from mistakes and maintain a high quality of care. We want to encourage a culture of “speaking up” so everyone feels comfortable raising a concern and confident that it will be investigated effectively.

We have two FTSU Guardians, alongside a number of specially-trained Champions who you can speak to confidentially about any concerns you may have.

Clive Underwood, Freedom to Speak Up Guardian:

“We hope that staff members are able to speak to their immediate line manager about any concerns, but if support is needed to do this, they can link in with myself and Lana, your Trust Freedom to Speak Up Guardians or our local Freedom to Speak Up Champions, which we have across the Trust.

Check-In, Check-Out

The Check-In and Check-Out is a short and simple intervention to be used within teams at the start of the shift or at handover before any patient detail or operational concern is discussed.

It is based on ‘StartWellEndWell’, developed by Olivia Donnelly at North Bristol NHS Trust, which has been shown to improve to team working and staff experience of feeling cared for.

At our Trust we use a two-stage process, at the start and end of a shift, in order to promote opportunities:

 For staff to be recognised and connect with colleagues

 To have a say in how the team work together

 To set the conditions that create psychological safety

 To decompress the emotional burdens of the shift

 To have their efforts appreciated

 To notice all that we do well and be compassionate to ourselves and to our colleagues

It is important that how this protocol works in teams is influenced by the teams themselves and their managers or leads. This should be developed and adopted from the ‘inside, out’ and used because teams find it useful.

Wellbeing Spaces

In an environment as busy as the acute hospital, sometimes we all need a safe space to gather our thoughts and recharge.

We are proud to have two wellbeing spaces open to all staff. These spaces are designed to provide colleagues with an area where they can unwind, recharge and meditate. These have been fitted with reclining chairs, mood lighting and atmospheric features to create a tranquil spot within the hustle-and bustle of our acute hospitals.

Chaplaincy

The Chaplains and Chaplaincy Team at the Trust offer confidential support to all staff of any faith or no faith.

They provide and facilitate spiritual, pastoral and religious care and offer advice and support at times of loss.

The hospitals have a full time Lead Chaplain who co-ordinates the work of the Chaplaincy with Chaplains and Volunteers drawn from our many faith and cultural communities. Chaplains of various faiths regularly visit the hospital, or will attend when requested. They can be contacted via the Chaplaincy Office.

Financial Support

We know that it is a difficult time for many people and that financial concerns are amongst the biggest reason for mental health problems and low morale. There are lots of helpful resources available for those experiencing struggles with finances.

Schwartz Rounds

Schwartz Rounds provide a structured forum where all staff, clinical and non-clinical, come together regularly to discuss the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare.

Employee Assistance Programme (CIC): The CIC service offer support and guidance on specific concerns including debt and financial management. (Page 4)

Schwartz Rounds are open to all staff members, clinical and non-clinical. The underlying premise for Rounds is that the compassion shown by staff can make all the difference to a patient’s experience of care, but that in order to provide compassionate care staff must, in turn, feel supported in their work.

The Money Advice Service: Free and impartial money advice, set up by government. Advice, tools and calculators to help you manage your finances https:// www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en.html
