FROM THE PRINCIPAL

H

uge congratulations to our Year 12 Class of 2023 who have achieved the strongest results in the HSC and the IB Diploma in over a decade!

The results are outstanding – almost 60% of our students achieved an ATAR of 90 and above and almost one in three received an ATAR over 95. We are thrilled for Cece Addabbo and Ella Curran, joint Dux with ATARs of 99.85, our highest HSC ATARs in more than 15 years. Special congratulations too to our top achieving IB Diploma students – Sophia Abdallah and Rosanna Cartwright – who both received an IB score of 44 which converted into an ATAR of 99.70.

Santa Sabina College was ranked 36th in the state on HSC results by The Sydney Morning Herald with a success rate of 30.23% climbing 20 places from 56th in 2022. When we combine our IB and HSC results our rank was an impressive 32nd in NSW. Several students received individual subject results in the top 10 of all students from across NSW. Details of the results of these high achieving students can be found in the following pages. Scholar profiles feature the students’ own words about where they are headed next and how the College helped them reach their goals.

As we celebrate these wonderful achievements, I would like to acknowledge and thank our extraordinary staff who go above and beyond to inspire, nurture and support our

students. I would like to thank Jacqueline Pugh, our Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning, for oversight of all curriculum programs at the College, Lauren Imber, our Dean of Studies, and Julie Harris, our Dean of IB, who leads the IB Programme with passion and dedication. A big congratulations also to all of our teachers who have taught these students throughout their school years at Santa Sabina. They have inspired, nurtured and guided our students to achieve their very best.

In a first for Santa Sabina, our very own Georgina Long AO of the Class of 1988 has just been named joint Australian of the Year for 2024 – a singular honour with national and international significance. You can find further information about her exceptional and life-saving work on page 24 of Santa Scholars. And we proudly congratulate ex-students Sally McCarthy (Class of 1977) and Rosemary Burke (Class of 1975) on their awards in the Australia Day Honours list. Sally is now an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and Rosemary received the Public Service Medal.

CLASS OF 2023 – RESULTS

CLASS OF 2023 HIGHLIGHTS The strongest results in over a decade

I

n the HSC and the IB Diploma, our school excelled with the strongest results in over a decade. In 2023, 35 students studied the International Baccalaureate Diploma, 107 students completed their Higher School Certificate, and 14 Year 11 accelerants studied one or more HSC courses. Our students demonstrated outstanding performance in various subjects catering to their diverse interests.

This personalised learning approach has allowed us to cater to the needs of each student, fostering an environment where students can pursue study beyond Year 12.

Santa Sabina was ranked 36th in the state by The Sydney Morning Herald for the HSC. Combined with the IBDP, it is estimated that Santa would be ranked 32nd.

This is a significant improvement on the previous year’s ranking of 56th. Our median ATAR in 2023 was 91.5.

HSC » Five students appeared on the All-round Achievers List for students – those who achieved a result in the highest band in at least 10 course units. » Sixty-nine students (including two Year 11 accelerants) received the highest band possible for one or more courses and are recognised on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Distinguished Achievers List. This means 57% of students attempting an HSC course achieved a Band 6. Sixty-three percent of our Year 12 students and 14% of our accelerants achieved at least one Band 6 result. » Santa Sabina students appeared 188 times, for many students more than once, on the NESA Distinguished Achievers List across 34 Courses, celebrating the diversity of our success. » The Top Achievers in Course List indicates the students who

achieved in the top five, 10 or 20 places (depending on candidature size) for each HSC course. Santa Sabina appeared nine times: English Extension 1 2nd place, Italian Extension 2nd place, Legal Studies 3rd place, History Extension 7th and 8th place, Design and Technology 3rd and 7th place and Modern History 17th place. » Strong performances, particularly in the following courses: • Ancient History – two students received Band 6 (33% of the cohort) • Business Studies – 19 students received Band 6 (43% of the cohort) • Chemistry – four students received Band 6 (33% of the cohort) • Design & Technology – 18 students received Band 6 (86% of cohort) • Economics – five students received Band 6 (50% of the cohort) • Geography – four students received Band 6 (33% of the cohort)

» Our average result was 36.7 (ATAR 92) out of a possible 45 with a 100% pass rate. The average result across Australia (2646 students) was 34.53 out of a possible 45. The global average for IB Diploma examinations in November 2023 was 29.06. We are immensely proud of our students, their determination to do well while completing their diverse expectations in core and academic classes.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? Santa always created a really comfortable environment for me and also pushed me to try new things.

The support of my senior teachers in particular gave me the means and confidence to work towards reaching my goals.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

Try your best not to compare yourself to anyone else because everyone has a unique study style and strategies that work for them. I also think balance and breaks are so important for your mindset and will definitely help in the long run.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? I really enjoyed spending time with my friends and entire cohort in my final year, even the times when we were just hanging out together at recess or lunch.

I also had so much fun celebrating our graduation and final weeks together.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? My teachers’ amazing support and dedication to furthering my success was phenomenal, and I’m so grateful. I always felt pushed to explore new ideas and consider new ways of thinking. As a person who loves the humanities, my teachers have been so crucial in developing my ability to think deeply and critically. They were committed to my growth as an individual, not just as a mark. In all of my subjects, my teachers helped me to not only achieve my best academically, but also to grow into the best version of myself as a learner.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

Focus on your learning and development rather than a number, because that’s when your enthusiasm and inspiration for your education will really develop.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? There was always such an amazing sense of community and togetherness that really made me feel like I was part of something important and special.

Year 12 is very stressful; studying consistently whilst taking time for yourself and your friends and family, as well as being involved in sports and extracurricular is so important.

Maintaining a balance will ensure you don’t burn out, and that your final year at school is as rewarding and enjoyable as possible.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? My best moments at Santa are the strong friendships I made, and the support of our cohort, particularly in our final year. Being able to encourage and connect with each other is something I’ll always treasure.

Santa Sabina has inspired me to exceed limitations, lead by example and explore varied perspectives. All of my teachers were phenomenal and helped me to achieve my aspirations.

The support system helped extensively, especially the teachers who gave me the mental and academic support I needed to achieve my goals. They provided me with content, resources and people to talk to in times of stress and worry and I will be forever grateful for them. The school also provided networking opportunities with former students and people in professional roles which allowed me to develop my desired future pathway.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

I would encourage future students to maintain a close relationship with their teachers and seek feedback from them as much as possible. I also believe it’s helpful to surround yourself with people who have similar goals and study habits.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Some of my most memorable moments were made at Year 11 and 12 Retreat which offered me the chance to bond with my teachers and peers. The Year 12 graduation celebrations are also moments that I will remember and treasure.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

I would encourage the Class of 2024 to make the most of the highly rewarding co-curricular opportunities available at Santa to complement their academic studies.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Some of my favourite memories from my time at Santa are representing the College in sport and academic competitions.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

Ensure balance in your lives. This year you will be getting driver licenses, building relationships with your cohort and teachers and preparing your future.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Athletics Carnivals, Dom’s Day, Love Week and our theme launch. Being in a huge circle with everyone dancing and laughing together is forever engraved in my mind. The pure joy and respect we have for each other is a great memory that I will never forget and am eternally grateful for.

Bachelor of Laws and International Relations at the Australian National University.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? The teachers at Santa are fantastic and their incredible support, both academically and pastorally, helped me not only achieve, but go beyond the goals I set. My teachers were always there to go through feedback and help me improve, but more importantly emphasised the importance of progress over perfection and an all round balanced lifestyle.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

Your life is so much greater than the HSC. Ultimately what is important is progressing and developing as opposed to perfection. Enjoying what you study is so important to success, as opposed to striving for full marks.

Hard work pays off, but you also need to make sure you are enjoying what you do to get good results.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Studying subjects I truly loved and getting to mature in a supportive environment. Learning on Duke of Ed hikes allowed me to grow as a person with a strong foundation for leaving school.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO IN 2024?

Law and Economics at the University of Sydney or University of Technology Sydney.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? Santa provided me with excellent teachers who became mentors not only for my academic pursuits but also in preparing me for life outside of high school.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

The Class of 2024 should utilise the amazing support system at Santa not only academically but also via the Sport department, co-curricular activities and events as this will help them maintain a balance in their Year 12 journey.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Being in a classroom with my peers and having group discussions. These moments were so underrated and looking back I realise how much joy they brought me.

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Languages) as a Dalyell Scholar at the University of Sydney.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? I am so grateful for the unwavering faith and support provided by our teachers.

They were not only mentors, but advocates and role models, and their empathy, intelligence and insight were vital in helping me achieve my personal best. I felt that my holistic wellbeing was valued.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

See your hobbies and passions as complementary to your studies, rather than as obstacles or distractions.

While it may be tempting to give up the activities you love to dedicate more time to schoolwork, having creative outlets can help you destress and improve your wellbeing, which will in turn help you to focus and enrich your work with new perspectives.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? The moments shared with my IB cohort. The small class sizes and shared experiences such as the Extended Essay and the CAS project meant that we were very tight-knit as a group and were always there to support one another.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO IN 2024?

Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) at either the University of Sydney or the University of NSW.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? Since Year 5, I have been given countless opportunities to expand my knowledge and pursue passions both academically and personally.

My teachers in particular always encouraged me to challenge myself.

They work extremely hard to support Year 12 students by providing endless feedback and revision resources.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

Pace yourselves throughout your studies to maintain social activities to alleviate stress and avoid burnout. It’s also important to set realistic goals for yourself and surround yourself with those who motivate you. The IB cohort was very cooperative, which allowed us to learn from each other and improve before our final exams.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Events such as Dom’s Day and Santa Fest were highlights of my time at Santa, fostering a great sense of community.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? Santa Sabina cultivated a nurturing environment that allowed me to succeed in my academic studies all whilst instilling in me a strong determination for sport and leadership.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2024?

Never cease to recognise that what you may characterise as a failure is truly just an opportunity to learn and excel further. This mindset is exactly what propelled me through my senior studies.

BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA? Dom’s Day was characterised as both a sacred and celebratory event that allowed us as Year 12 students to collectively appreciate our rich senior journeys.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO IN 2024?

Bachelor of International Relations, UK.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? The enthusiasm, generosity and kindness of my teachers provided a safe and encouraging academic environment, where I could achieve my personal best. Within Santa Sabina, I was surrounded by a community of people who motivated me throughout my school experience and supported me through prayer, feedback, discussion, and friendship. I know the relationships I have fostered at school will remain wherever I am in life.

SPEECH NIGHT 2023

T

his year at Speech Night we awarded prizes to students from Years 3 to 11 in a glittering ceremony at Sydney’s State Theatre.

Our guest speaker was Clinical Psychologist and academic Dr Madeleine Fraser, an ex-student from the Class of 2004 who inspired the students with her tips for practising the art of self compassion.

The speeches and prizegiving sessions were interspersed with stunning musical and dance items from our students. The evening culminated in the presentation of prestigious new awards – the Principal’s Honour Medals – given to one student from each of Years 7 to 11. These are the highest awards to be presented at our Speech Night and are presented to students who have demonstrated the following character traits throughout the year: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Self-Regulation and Humility.

TOP SCHOOL-AGED PUBLIC SPEAKER in Australia

M

olly Hoogland of Year 11 has been named the national winner of the Plain English Speaking Award, organised by The Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education.

Sixteen-year-old Molly competed against students aged 1518 from government and non-government schools across Australia, progressing from early rounds and winning the NSW final along the way.

Molly gave two outstanding speeches – her eight-minute prepared speech – ‘T-shirt Feminism’ – and a three-minute impromptu speech (with four minutes to prepare) on ‘The Burning Question’. In ‘T-shirt Feminism’, Molly explored the corporate exploitation of the feminist movement for advertising purposes. For the impromptu, Molly chose to speak on the digital literacy gap. Molly speaks without notes and in addition the competition requires competitors to speak without PowerPoints, microphones or lecterns.

Molly will travel to London in April 2024 representing Australia in the week-long international competition against the national winners of other English-speaking countries. Australia has not been represented in person in the international final since before COVID. In the hours before speaking Molly says she feels nervous but just before she stands up she doesn’t think about anything and the nerves abate – she has memorised her speech and practised numerous times.

With her favourite subjects a toss-up between Language & Literature and Global Politics, Molly is currently studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. At school and at home she reads widely including, for news, The Guardian, and for recreation, recent international literary fiction. She also enjoys watching documentaries and TV interviews, saying she is interested in the way people think and why they vote the way they do. Her career plans are focused on either law – as a barrister – or journalism – as a political reporter. To get her there she is hoping to study the double degrees of Law and International Relations at ANU. Surprisingly, Molly had given up Public Speaking in recent years and it was only thanks to her Santa Sabina teachers that she found the confidence to take it up again.

‘I wouldn’t have been able to do this competition at all without the support offered by the school and the fact that they put me in the competition’, she said.

‘It made me feel more confident about actually trying’.

Molly won numerous other awards in 2023 including the Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship (a two-week historical study tour to Singapore and Darwin to learn about our nation’s military past and the importance of commemoration) and with her 11A debating team, the Year 11 State Final of the Catholic Schools Debating Association of NSW.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS UPON VISITING THE MUSEUM: The school has lots of heritage over the years and it’s very interesting to see it. - Deanna Buric I enjoyed looking at the old photographs and reading about different historical events. I also enjoyed looking at the awards won (House colour, sports events) and the old uniforms. - Asha Milward In the museum, I was fascinated by the uniforms. I loved the design of the uniforms and I loved that every uniform had a different meaning. I learnt that Santa Sabina students were very good at playing tennis.

There were many old trophies for tennis competitions. - Olivia Nasr Some of the uniforms were green and blue. It was nice to see the awards for sports, they looked very cool and were engraved with the colour Houses. - Summer Beynon I love fashion so I really liked checking out the uniforms. I rated the uniforms out of 10 and my favourite was the beautiful green one (the most recent one). I also loved looking at the articles on the school’s history. - Olivia Doueihi Seeing the uniforms that the students used to wear was quite fascinating, and also reading letters and pages of the students’ work, as well as seeing the old crockery kept in wonderful condition was amazing.

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING YEAR 7 HISTORY AND RE –

Santa Sabina as a historical site

H

istory at Santa Sabina is rich. Our College heritage is all around us and especially through our charism and Christian beliefs that underpin our values.

Aiming to make the study of History in Year 7 authentic the teachers of History and Religious Education created an interdisciplinary learning challenge. The focus of this learning was to explicitly articulate the use of the historical site of Santa Sabina College and the material culture to reflect on the symbols and meaning of our shared heritage. Year 7 students in History demonstrated creative and critical thinking when examining sources of evidence from the site of Santa Sabina.

As History Teacher Sarah-Jane Cartwright explained, the students ‘participated in a tour of the College and completed an interdisciplinary assignment in which they investigated heritage items and reflected on the Dominican charism and pillars. Their study of Santa Sabina College as a historical site culminated in a visit to the College Museum.’

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS

TECH GIRLS are super heroes

C

ongratulations to our team of Year 11 students on winning the NSW and National Secondary Schools categories in the 2023 Tech girls are superheroes Competition! The winning concept, FlavourSaver, aimed to reduce household food waste by allowing for easy tracking and reminders of expiry dates. The app also features integrated digital shopping lists, recipes and food-donation centres tailored to the needs of household members.

All our teams were fortunate enough to be mentored by an industry professional throughout the program while developing their collaboration skills. The winning students – Carmel Mayo, Tanisha Chari, Aditi Kamath and Isabella Yang – were invited to the Microsoft flagship headquarters in North Sydney.

‘We were able to pitch our app, FlavourSaver, to a panel of female industry experts, and gain first-hand knowledge and advice about technology’, the students explained.

‘We were then given the opportunity to discover the technology workforce and even tour the Microsoft North Sydney Office. There were so many social issues discussed and unique solutions developed as a result. It was really inspiring to see young women in STEM and the future of the tech industry working towards gender equality in a profession that has historically been so male-dominated. Hearing these other women and their solutions is very valuable to us as young women in STEM.’

11A DEBATERS CSDA winners

O

ur Year 11A debating team in 2023 continued the Santa Sabina tradition of debating success in local and state competitions. In November these students won the Year 11 State Final of the competition run by the Catholic Schools’ Debating Association (CSDA).

The CSDA is the largest and oldest debating and public speaking competition in NSW. It was established over 50

years ago. Both the debating competition and the public speaking competition are open to all Metropolitan Sydney Catholic High Schools.

BEST DELEGATION at the model UN

K

ate Pitman-Fernandez of Year 10 won Best Delegation award in the Blacktown Girls Model UN conference. Representing the Portuguese Republic with Melissa Bousquet from MLC School, Kate engaged in discourse with delegates from other countries, debated amendments and voted on resolutions, expanding her knowledge of international relations and diplomacy. ‘The conference provided an insight into the principles and procedures of the UN, as well as giving us a platform to refine our public speaking and diplomatic skills’, Kate said.

CULTURES

of Thinking in Action

T

o encourage challenge and learning for understanding in Commerce, students in Year 10 were given the opportunity to work collaboratively as a business to design a product to sell to the community through the Commerce Market Day. Modelled on the Cultures of Thinking Framework, (Harvard University Project Zero) students were able to engage in a real world project to apply the theory of a Business Plan. Explicit consideration was given to the four business functions of operations, human resources, finance and marketing. Through this project students were able to clearly understand business success through profit. All proceeds were donated to the Kopanang Community Trust.

NATIONAL AWARD WINNERS in Kindergarten and Year 1

T

eams of Kindergarten and Year 1 students have won the Collaboration category of the 2023 National Museum of Australia’s History Makers School Video Challenge. The Kindergarten students Joseph Hoang, Claire Zhang, Serena Dong, Oscar Ko, Jonathan Lin, Evan Yip and Enzo Pensini created a video – The Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Year 1 students, Gabriella Abbonizio, Siobhan Chung, Shreya Panyam and Adeline Tudehope, created a video – The Sydney Opera House.

The students were required to research a defining moment in Australia’s history, showcasing their understanding via a video. The moment could have been of importance to our school, community, nation, or the entire world. It could have been a moment that was life-changing or placechanging, taking place last year or last century.

Rounding out the awards were the team from Year 2 – Michaela Nguyen, Irene Jung and Audrey Wong – named national runners up in their age group for their video, also titled The Sydney Opera House.

O

ur Middle Years Ethics Olympiad team won Gold in late 2023 for the second consecutive year. They will now represent the College and the country in the 2024 International Ethics Olympiad Final. The team members were Olivia Santangelo, Edith Barrett, Eve Ardagna and Emily Hirschhorn (all Year 9) and Mia Beck of Year 8. They were mentored by Kate Pitman-Fernandez of Year 10.

The Ethics Olympiad rewards clear, concise, respectful discourse around interesting ethical cases.

ongratulations to our young environmentalist Ava Anderson on winning the 9-12 years category of the #SeaToSource Sea The Change Competition with her ingenious and striking artwork ‘Not the Orca’.

The judges at Conservation Volunteers Australia told Ava her entry was outstanding, adding ‘it is incredibly inspiring to see children so passionate about the environment…our entire #SeaToSource team thought your use of the miniature groceries/Little Shop items was ingenious, with an incredibly impactful tagline that made us all stop and think about the true impacts of plastic on our oceans. Excellent work Ava Mae!’ Ava’s artist’s statement was as follows:

Orcas, or Killer Whales, have been spotted in the Great Southern Reef of Australia. Orcas are said to be the ocean’s greatest predator. But with our littering and disposable plastic society, these things are NOW the world’s greatest ocean predators. Please stop littering and using plastic items, otherwise the whole unique ecosystem of the Great Southern Reef will be disposed of too.

This enrichment opportunity was part of the College enrichment program.

THE SIXTH EXTINCTION

W

ell done to Kavitha Varatharajan of Year 10 whose stunning watercolour highlighting the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal was named a semi-finalist in the international student art competition: 2023 Science Without Borders® Challenge.

Kavitha’s artwork was one of 12,000 entries received from around the world. The theme in 2023 was ‘The Sixth Extinction’ and students were asked to highlight the plight of an endangered species through art.

‘Hawaiian Monk Seals are a greatly respected animal in Hawaiian culture due to their title as “guardians over human souls after death” and also their role

as guardians of the Hawaiian ecosystem’s balance’, Kavitha explained.

‘They are apex predators and thus keep many other sea creature populations under control. The squid and the tuna fish resting on and next to the seal show how reliant the ecosystem is on its guardian. The seal blends into the sand and background so that the fish and squid can stand out. Like how the seal protects the ecosystem from devastation and disarray. The seal brings life and peace to its ecosystem, which, though we can’t see it, is being slowly destroyed by the extinction of the Hawaiian Monk Seal. We need the Hawaiian ecosystem’s guardian to continue to protect its fragile balance and ensure the survival of many other species.’

FOSTERING AN EVIDENCEENRICHED CULTURE AISNSW Symposium 2023

H

igh impact teaching is underpinned and strengthened by teachers who are skilled in using evidence to inform and enrich their practice. By engaging in and with research, teachers strive to build on the practices they know work and de-implement or redesign those that don’t.

While any effective educator will instinctively and consistently engage in the process of reflection, research and adjustment to improve their practice, action research gives this process a clear method and strategy.

At the end of Term 3, our Action Research Coordinator Kate Corcoran was invited to be part of a panel discussion at the Association of Independent Schools NSW Education Research Symposium 2023 to share experiences from our 2023 Action Research Professional Learning Project. This Symposium was designed to bring educators together to critically reflect and build on practices used by teachers to engage in and with research in their quest for continuous and sustained improvement in student learning outcomes.

‘Despite the varying experiences and backgrounds of panellists, we had all seen firsthand the benefits of practitioner-based research and its role in improving teaching and learning practices and outcomes’, Kate explained.

‘While external research plays an important role in informing best practice, every school has its own distinct context with unique challenges and aspirations to match.

So as teachers seek out the latest educational research to develop strategies to improve student learning outcomes, as practitioner-based researchers, they will methodically (and often collaboratively) engage in a cycle of reflecting on the research, adapting the new strategies to suit their context and gathering evidence to measure the impact on students’ learning.

Through our 2023 Action Research Learning Project, we have seen the professional and student learning outcomes of this process and during the symposium, Kate was delighted and proud to share some of these outcomes, including: • Using audio feedback for student growth • The craft of creative writing • Enhancing student engagement with musical instruments • Enhancing student physical activity • Improving spelling in writing • Projects of action and agency • Redesigning rubrics for student growth.

BOARD STAFF SCHOLARSHIP

V

ikki Cummins, teacher of Geography, Commerce, Business Management and Business Studies, has been awarded the Santa Sabina College Board Staff Scholarship for 2024. The scholarship will enable her to attend the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools Symposium in Baltimore Maryland USA in June 2024. At the symposium she will meet and network with other teachers from across the globe, all of whom will be focused on girls’ education and what the future will look like.

A teacher at Santa Sabina since 2022, Vikki is ardent about equipping our senior students to be the entrepreneurs of the future. Her championship of immersive learning brings her lessons to life and to the attention of educators worldwide, as an example of educational leadership and innovation. At Santa Sabina, Vikki’s headline achievement this year has been her leadership of the creation of our students’ digital start-up social enterprise, Santa Style.

This disruptive business model has won several awards for the students involved, including the 2023 Global Youth Action Award (and US$3000 grant) from the International Baccalaureate Organisation.

Christopher Richardson’s academic research has been referenced by Jung H. Pak in the book Becoming King Jong Un. “Christopher Richardson, a researcher who focuses on how childhood is experienced in North Korea, points out that the regime is seeking to paint Kim as a child genius with “messianic destiny” and the natural heir to the revolution.” (p94) Kate Corcoran has written an article for the Geography Bulletin published by The Geography Teachers Association. “An innovative Cross Curriculum initiative from Santa Sabina College to integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander themes in History and Geography classrooms is explained by Kate Corcoran in An Integrated Approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Themes.”

Brigida Zagora was invited to present to independent school teachers from the perspective of a Senior HSC Ancient History Marker at the AISNSW History Conference 2023 – Expanding Horizons- Milestones of History through the “2023 HSC Examination Deep Dive for Ancient History”.

EX-STUDENT NAMED AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR 2024

O

n the eve of Australia Day 2024 Professor Georgina Long AO (Class of 1988) was named joint Australian of the Year along with her colleague Dr Richard Scolyer.

This is the first time this singular honour has been awarded to an ex-student of Santa Sabina. Australian of the Year is awarded to an exceptional, highly-respected citizen who is a role model for all Australians, igniting discussion and change on issues of national importance.

The two professors are melanoma research and treatment pioneers whose work has halved deaths from this aggressive cancer.

Professor Long, BSc (Hons1, UM) PhD MBBS (Hons) FRACP FAHMS, is Co-Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), and Chair of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research at MIA and Royal North Shore Hospital, The University of Sydney. She leads an extensive clinical trials team and laboratory at MIA, with a focus on targeted therapies and immuno-oncology in melanoma.

In late 2023 Professor Long was ranked the world’s second melanoma expert in all fields and discipline.

Together with her colleague Professor Richard Scolyer, Professor Long was recognised for her world-leading work that has turned a diagnosis of advanced melanoma from a death sentence into a curable disease for many. As The Sydney Morning Herald says, their ‘”enduring partnership” has saved thousands of people from dying from melanoma.’

Their work in immunotherapy is now being applied successfully to other forms of advanced cancer.

Santa Sabina College is beyond proud of Georgina and this significant national recognition of her work saving lives across the globe – she is a role model for our students and community.

omposer Elizabeth Younan of the Class of 2011 has just won the prestigious 2024 General Sir John Monash scholarship for overseas postgraduate study. Elizabeth, whose musical career had its genesis as a student at Santa Sabina, is our current Composer-in-Residence, tutoring many students and writing commissioned pieces for our concerts, most recently ‘Set the World on Fire’ which she dedicated ‘to every past, present and future member of Santa Sabina’.

Elizabeth told Santa Scholars how much her education has contributed to her success in the often tough world of professional music. ‘My time at Santa was intrinsic in shaping not only my musical growth, but also my prevailing curiosity and lifelong love of learning’, she said.

onjoint Associate Professor Sally McCarthy (Class of 1977) was made an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) in the Australia Day 2024 Honours list for distinguished service to emergency medicine, and to professional associations through leadership roles.

the Chair of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, on the WHO Roster of Consultants – Integrated Health Project Implementation (Integrated Health Services) and Immediate Past-President and Board Member of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.

Sally is a specialist emergency medicine physician who is driven by the vision of quality emergency care for all people, and improving health systems through innovation. She is a Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of NSW,

The College is thrilled and proud that our ex-students continue to serve the community in such important ways, improving the health and medical care of us all.

PUBLIC SERVICE Medal

With plans to use the $75,000 a year scholarship to study a three-year doctorate of musical arts, she hopes to study at either The Juilliard School, Princeton, or the University of Michigan.

Our community is extremely proud of her and her continued contribution to our music program.

ongratulations to Rosemary Burke (Class of 1975) on being awarded the Public Service Medal in the Australia Day 2024 Honours list. The Medal recognises her outstanding public service in the implementation and running of the COVID-19 vaccination program and Special

Health Accommodation pharmacy support for the NSW Department of Health. Rosemary is a highly respected leader in the field of pharmacy, medication safety and electronic medication management.

She is currently the District Director of Pharmacy for Sydney Local Health District.
