College Principal Students of the Year 12 subjects featured in Year 12 Major Works 2023 are required to create a major project which takes up a substantial amount of the final mark for that subject.

So students with creative flair and design capacity or in depth interest are attracted to the subjects of Design & Technology, Textiles & Design and Visual Arts.

Santa Sabina students are renowned for their dedication to creating spectacular projects which

are frequently nominated and selected for the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) annual showcases of the exemplary major works in NSW (including ARTEXPRESS, Texstyle and Shape).

Research and creative work on these projects began in Term 4 2022.

Processes included research, experimentation, making and gathering feedback along the way.

The examples of exemplary work featured here are a measure of the excellent –3–

preparation, work and ability of these students.

We exhibited many of these works in our showcases for Visual Arts, Textiles & Design and Design & Technology in Term 3 2023.

All works represent a major accomplishment and I congratulate our talented students and their dedicated teachers.

NAME CECE ADDABBO

PROJECT REDEVELOPMENT OF LUNA PARK

The aim of my Major Design Project is to present an architectural concept for a redevelopment of Luna Park Sydney to create a more diverse and inclusive experience for visitors.

In my preliminary research, I discovered that entry to Luna Park is free for the public, however, rather than being seen as an opportunity to enjoy Sydney Harbour, the park has historically been a point of contention within the community. I intended to reshape the public view of the site and contribute to the rebuilding of the NSW Tourism and Arts sectors as well as the 24-Hour Economy after COVID-19 and the ‘Lockout Laws’ through fostering recreation, relaxation and socialisation.

I have extended the existing wharf bordering Luna Park to showcase the iconic location and create a ‘Recreational area’ containing green spaces, seating, food trucks and opportunities

for physical activity to promote a diversification of Sydney’s night-time economy by providing alcohol-free opportunities. In this space, I have included an Arts building inspired by Luna Park’s unique Art Deco style architecture, created as a versatile space for showcasing exhibitions by local creatives.

The opposite side of the park features a concept for a ‘High Line’ designed to provide relief from the industrial style of Luna Park and create further socialisation and relaxation opportunities. Finally, the open amphitheatre is set to replace the park’s existing indoor concert venue as a multifunctional space for live performances and outdoor movies, thus supporting the NSW Arts and Cultural sector and expanding the demographic contributing to Sydney’s 24-hour economy.

NAME MIA ARDAGNA

PROJECT REDEVELOPMENT OF GLEBE SOCIAL HOUSING

In my Major Design Project, I have created a redevelopment proposal for existing social housing in Glebe. Recently the NSW Government recognised the need for the redevelopment of this area due to the ongoing housing crisis and rising cost of living however this has been heavily criticised

by the surrounding community in Glebe due to its large scale.

My project has compromised between expanding the existing capacity whilst still complying with heritage and height restrictions.

Through extensive research into the current waiting list for social housing in NSW which is currently almost 60,000 people, it was clear that my design must maximise the space available whilst maintaining the current community culture.

Additionally, there was a focus on the architectural heritage of the surrounding area enabling me to restore existing styles rather than creating modern apartment buildings. My proposal presents

an opportunity to maximise the use of NSW Government-owned land whilst providing residents with adequate public transport making Sydney CBD accessible.

The project hopes to provide residential floor space which maximises the space available within a system that is overloaded with applicants and severely under resourced. Whilst the current government proposal considers many different conveniences in terms of location and access to public transport, my project will also consider affordable living in everyday purchases such as developing lasting relationships with charity organisations and ensuring that the functionality of the space suits their needs for them to help support residents who are facing challenges due to the rising cost of living. Further, the focus on sustainability through the inclusion of a water tank and water recycling system as well as solar panels minimises the overall cost of living for residents of this development.

NAME AMELIE AU-YEUNG

PROJECT KENNEL FOR DOGS WITH ANXIETY

To design a dog kennel for dogs who suffer and are affected by anxiety from either separation from their owners or dogs who get stressed easily from loud noises.

This project is targeted to those who have had dogs since COVID or those who have dogs that do suffer from separation anxiety or anxiety in general as a method to help calm them and reduce their stress intake as well as overall dog wellbeing. Designing a dog kennel specifically for dogs with anxiety is crucial to address the unique needs and challenges these dogs face. Anxiety in dogs can stem from various factors, such as past trauma, separation from owners, loud noises, unfamiliar environments, or medical conditions. Designing a kennel that caters to their wellbeing can greatly improve their quality of life and reduce stress.

Through my own experience of owning dogs that suffer from different forms of anxiety I was able to use that to give insight to the design of the kennel. By observing my dogs’ behaviours when faced with anxiety inducing environments or moments, I was able to make sure I chose the right materials for the kennel and create a design that would feel safe both to be in and be comfortable in. Placing the kennel in the central living room in my house it allows for them to feel safe using the kennel as they can see that we are there but also placing it in a place where they sleep also creates a sense of familiarity and comfort.

In response to the design brief, I believe I have successfully fulfilled the criteria and requirements as I have designed and created a

NAME DANIELLE BETTRIDGE PROJECT BETTY’S BAR

The concept for my Major Development Project arose from my eldest sister’s lame attempt to make a bar area for the front room of our home, as both of my sisters host many social gatherings. This is particularly the case after the extensive COVID-19 lockdowns and following small group socialising. This demographic also found funds short due to a lack of work and were often worried about going into busy spaces. She named this space ‘Betty’s Bar’. Thus arose a need for something bigger and better, that was functional and much more aesthetically pleasing. A subsequent survey of this age

group of 18-25 years (as well as asking the older demographic) identified the style, design, materials and colours the target audience liked best and that complemented the style of the home, as well as what features and elements should be included such as wine glass rack, shot paddle, bar fridge, ice maker and cool lighting to enhance the vibe. From here my MDP ‘Betty’s Bar’ evolved into a bar space that drew on design aspects from architectural features of the house, as well as a nod to the heritage listed original section; was manoeuvrable so it could be used for bigger gatherings in

various locations in the home; incorporated the target market’s wants; as well as incorporating sound activated LED strip lighting.

I wanted to use sustainable materials where possible and found Wastewood in Marrickville a valuable resource. From here I sourced recycled hardwood for the uprights and top section, along with the slats on the front. These elements directly reflected many elements of our 2018 renovations. The slats also reflect the timber floors of the original house. The black foil finish plywood both added detail on what could have been a plain back panel, but also reflected the brickwork and kitchen cabinetry within the house. The copper uprights and support bars mimic the balustrade on the first floor addition and the heritage copper bellcast hood found over the bay windows. The size of the bar was determined by the door heights, hallway width and turning circles through doorways. These were critical. Within these constraints I had to fit the fridge and adequate storage for bottles, glassware and ice maker. From here the design evolved after many iterations on SketchUp into what you see now. The addition of the B shot paddle incorporated a fun element and copper and resin detail. A thoroughly enjoyable and challenging project that I hope will be enjoyed for years to come.

NAME KAYLA BORYSEWICZ

PROJECT OUTDOOR DINING TABLE

For my Major Design Project, I created an outdoor dining table that addressed the need for a casual outdoor dining space in my home’s backyard. The key feature in my table, the decorative runner, suits its surrounding environment and encapsulates the aesthetic of the indoors through its pattern and colours. This design originated from the traditional Polish art form Wycinanki, that involves intricate cutting paper to create colourful and symmetrical designs. Wycinanki designs often feature symmetrical motifs inspired by nature, folklore, and everyday rural life, characterised by vibrant colours and precise cuts, which create visually striking compositions. This vibrant floral art form inspired the decorative table runner design, which the aesthetic of my house would seamlessly blend, due to a variety of wycinanki designs incorporated throughout my house.

When designing this outdoor dining table I took into

consideration the concerns of my target market. Due to the large area of open space and the lack of a casual dining area that provided an open feeling, I felt the need along with my target market to address this concern.

The main concern for my Major Design Project was to address the need for a casual dining space in my backyard; that allows for my family and friends to enjoy the outside serenity in a comfortable and warm environment. A criterion that needed to be met in conjunction with creating a casual dining space, was also that it could fit six and more people around the table. This allows for a more comfortable environment to relax outside, and to not stress about fitting, creating a calming and relaxing outdoor aura. This concern was addressed fully as I was able to create a table that was large enough for my family of six to fit around, plus more for others to sit around outside. By creating this table, my family and

visitors are provided with an area for them to sit and either enjoy more or spend time with one another. My motivations are based upon the blank area of space in my backyard, which doesn’t create a warm and welcoming environment.

Overall, I believe that this project fully addresses the needs of a casual dining space that will be used by my family and friends to allow for more time to be spent outdoors, enjoying company that I hope will continue in the future.

NAME SOPHIE BOULOS

PROJECT LIGHTING FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Autism is a ‘lifelong developmental condition that affects the way an individual relates to their environment and interacts with others’ (Autism Spectrum Australia). It is estimated that 1 in 70 Australians are on the autism spectrum, and of this, ‘approximately 50% of individuals experience what is classified as hypersensitivity to fluorescent lighting or certain wavelengths’ (Autism Speaks Inc). This hypersensitivity often leads to an increased risk of repetitive behaviours and dysregulation.

Although some Australian schools receive government funding to support students with autism, these funds are insufficient in catering to the specific needs of individuals.

My Major Design Project (MDP) has examined this need and therefore, I have designed and produced functional and aesthetically pleasing lamps for children with autism, specifically in a learning environment, aged

4-18. The purpose of the lamps is to support children with autism to regulate and maximise their concentration while learning through appealing to a range of senses. By creating two lamps – one fixed and one transportable – I will be able to meet the dynamic needs of the target market. I have ensured both lamps have a cohesive design to allow for implementation in various areas in schools, including classrooms and sensory rooms.

It is vital to create multisensory environments for children with autism to activate different areas of the brain which improves an individual’s learning experience by building neural pathways more quickly. Since individuals with autism often become overstimulated by bright and fluorescent lights, the feature of adjustable brightness provides comfort, and in turn, improves the learning experience. Further, I chose to integrate LED lights with controllers to customise

the colour of the light expelled.

Adjustable options for lighting was an important consideration throughout my MDP in order to respond to the changing needs of the target market and reduce disruptive behaviours caused by sensory seeking or sensory overload.

Additionally, since the lamps can be employed by schools as part of an intervention strategy to foster a balanced atmosphere of concentration and relaxation, I incorporated a movement-based component to the light to support students who require visual stimuli to regulate. Further, the addition of creating a lighting guide for teachers to use will empower a greater sense of understanding of autism, aiding to better cater to the diverse needs of individuals.

Therefore, my MDP has aimed to prevent ongoing dysregulation of the target market within the school environment through the medium of visual stimuli.

NAME LILY CARR

PROJECT 2032 BRISBANE OLYMPIC VILLAGE CONCEPT

The 2032 Olympics, Brisbane, will be an international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2032, in Brisbane, Australia. ‘Queensland’s greatest single economic opportunity comes from hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic games,’ – Annastacia Palaszczuk.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the Queensland Council of Social Services found that six groups bore the burden of the economic slowdown. Yet Queensland’s 10-year plan is starting with the Brisbane Olympics, driving revenue ‘pathing the green and gold runway to success.’

and abilities, increasing tourism, limiting the housing crisis and rebuilding the economy for local business.

My design concept targets these issues by creating a multifunctional space that will be accommodation for the Olympians during the Olympics and affordable housing for the public afterwards. This space is split into 10 precincts, with Precinct 8 (Northshore Links) as the main focus of the Olympic Village, featuring curved towers and a multifunctional food hall.

Therefore, my Major Design Project is a Proposed Olympic Village For Brisbane 2032, located at the initial site that has been set in place by the Queensland Government, Northshore Hamilton. Aiming to align with the government’s 10-year master plan which includes promoting Queensland as a travel destination for people of all backgrounds

The remaining precincts feature additional housing, sport fields, fitness centres and workspaces.

Brisbane 2032 is committed to delivering a climate positive and sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games. By implementing green rooves, which reduce building energy and provide new urban habitat, my Olympic Village is using sustainable principles. Overall my concept of the Brisbane Olympic Village, provides targeted solutions.

NAME ERICA COMITO

PROJECT THE LAKESIDE PRECINCT REDEVELOPMENT

My Major Design Project aims to design and present a redevelopment of The Lakeside Precinct, in the corner of The Entrance Road and Dening St, The Entrance NSW. This redevelopment concept will include many different aspects, including a residential tower, community spaces/function areas, a work office complex and a multilevel shopping centre. I will design the precinct’s exterior, including all landscaping and certain interior aspects. I aim to focus on sustainable design elements, the overall usefulness/ functionality of the large precinct, how the space can be used in many different ways, by many different people and how the area can be used to suit the needs and wants of the local community.

Due to the age and rundown condition of the existing centre, I have decided to create a redevelopment for this location.

In July 2020, The Central Coast Council gave the local community

a chance to share ideas in helping shape the future of The Entrance town centre and develop a yearround destination that is vibrant and entertaining. ‘The Entrance Town Centre Place Plan’ aims to activate and revitalise the town. This plan will focus on the town centre and the ways the area can be utilised to create a safe, engaging, welcoming and revitalised community space.

My redevelopment option will meet the needs of the council and help The Entrance grow as a community. The Lakeside Precinct will attract people to the town centre, allowing The Entrance to grow and be used to its full potential.

My redevelopment of the Lakeside precinct will help improve the experience of The Entrance town centre for both locals and visitors in order to maintain its thriving future. The Central Coast Council is looking at four key aspects of their Place Plan; Active and accessible, Creative,

Live work local and evening economy. My redevelopment of The Lakeside precinct fits the criteria of all four components.

The many community spaces and shopping centres allow for active and accessible facilities for all community members. I am designing my concept to be creative and unique, trying to implement many aesthetic and functional features to ensure the precinct allows for creativity to be inspired and explored. The work office complex provides work opportunities located in The Entrance and allows residents to live closer to work. The evening economy will grow via the many restaurants and shops located throughout the precinct, creating a very lively and safe atmosphere.

NAME ALICIA DE PALO

PROJECT HOMEBUSH PRECINCT REDEVELOPMENT

My Major Design Project for the ‘Homebush Theatre Precinct Redevelopment’ on the site of 55-67 Parramatta Road and 12-24 Powell Street, presented a landmark development opportunity where an iconic heritage building continues to stand even after 98 years and obsolete. This site provided the opportunity to listen to community wants and needs surrounding a range of areas as it is listed as a ‘Mixed Use’ development site.

I aimed to present and design a concept for the redevelopment of the unused Homebush Theatre building and surrounding site for community and residential purposes. I also wanted to convey ideas on how the large area could be used to benefit the community in social ways. It is currently fenced off and run down therefore

impacting the surrounding environment aesthetically as well as the memories and feelings the community has with the original building. I also emphasised the importance of ensuring the sustainability of the buildings where the design should have a positive impact environmentally.

With the original building being heritage listed, rules and regulations needed to be followed as well as it being important for the additional building I was designing, to include some features of the art deco style to ensure cohesion. The community section of my project will be centred around needs and wants of the target market discovered through a survey to the community which attracted 125 responses. When designing to ensure my project would satisfy

these needs, I ensured as many aspects that the target market highlighted were included in my design. These included the components of the commercial space, outdoor theatre, weekend markets and multi-arts centre.

The residential section of my project was designed to ensure the availability and a wider range of options of affordable and accessible housing during the current housing crisis in Sydney.

NAME CHLOE INDARI

PROJECT PILATES REFORMER FOR THE ELDERLY For my Major Design Project, I have adapted a Pilates Reformer into an exercise machine targeted at the elderly, to promote full body strengthening as well as mobility and flexibility. This has combined elements from three different types of Pilates reformers, to optimise the function of the reformer whilst minimising the space it will take up. This subsequently maximises convenience for the elderly, my selected target market.

Moreover, a primary goal of my MDP is to adapt the Pilates reformer into a more accessible and intuitive machine. As Pilates is commonly done in a studio, I will target my reformer to be easy to use individually by the user in their home. Targeted at the elderly, my MDP seeks to be as easily accessible and ergonomic as possible, so my target market can get highly beneficial exercise in the comfort of their own home.

I selected the elderly as my target market in order to facilitate and simultaneously promote the benefits of Pilates, such as full body awareness, flexibility and mobility. Indeed, the goal of my reformer is to foster greater attention to exercise for my target market. Benefits of Pilates for the elderly in particular range from minimising risk of injury to increasing range of motion.

To create a unique design, I have aesthetically differentiated it from existing designs through the colour choice and cut outs on the side. In doing so, I facilitated a more appealing and unique design, allowing ample opportunity for the target market to be drawn to my final concept, which is unique in comparison to that of its peers on the market.

NAME ANGELINA LAM

PROJECT EASTWOOD CHILDREN’S CENTRE CONCEPT

For my Major Design Project, I developed a children’s centre to be situated next to the Eastwood Shopping centre, taking the area of the outdoor carpark of Eastwood Shopping centre. My MDP aims to provide a solution for parents who are trying to find their balance between work and life. The need for home childcare has risen over the years, and parents are struggling to find the balance between spending time on work and spending quality time with their children. The demand for childcare is ever-present and ever-growing, causing stress for families across Australia.

Especially for working mums, many have shared their concerns over the lack of childcare, and the impacts the pandemic has had on their work and life. Due to these reasons, parents have to take time off work to pick up their kids from school and childcare which makes it hard to get all their work done in the office. Hence this children’s centre would be able to resolve

the issues parents face where they are not worried about their kids’ safety.

The specific target market will be parents who struggle to find a balance between their work and personal life. This design is catered to this market and will provide them with a specifically curated space so that it is easier for them to find and manage the constant struggles of looking after children. It targets children who want a space during the day or after school to go to where they would be able to socialise with different aged children or want a space where they could study.

My Deisgn brief is to ‘Design and model of a Children’s centre with a focus on providing a solution for parents who are trying to find their balance between work and life.’

By designing a communal space and by proposing this idea to the local council, I am providing a solution to this issue by making it easily adaptable to any space.

NAME RAQUEL MOLINA

PROJECT UTS TOWER REDEVELOPMENT The building’s features, and its historical nature, signify the importance of conserving some features of the original design. By aiming to redesign the structure for the building, it was crucial to consider the entire UTS campus.

The tower’s stark contrast to the surrounding campus has allowed me to incorporate similar features found in adjacent buildings, such as the use of glass, light colours and greenspace into my new design. These will allow for the building to appear more integrated into the rest of the campus.

I have identified my target market as local future university students and current ones, as well as staff.

However, the final product will also impact and have an effect on society and local residents.

Thus, it was important to create a positive image and aesthetic product for my location as this will represent and market the university.

For my major design project I have chosen to design a concept for the ‘Re-development of the University of Technology’ in Sydney, located in the inner city suburb of Ultimo on Broadway road. Originally designed by Michael Dysart, the UTS tower showcases the Brutalist design style. Upon research into the ‘master plan’ for the university, the lack of a re-development for this building created a need to attract the target market and make the city skyline more modern and desirable.

To incorporate sustainability, I have aimed to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment. This has been achieved through the addition of several greenspaces, additional to the pre-existing alumni green area. By researching the heat island effect, I was able to understand the impact of Sydney’s hotter climates, in high rise buildings made with heat attracting materials such as concrete. Heavily inspired by the ‘one central park’ building standing opposite, I introduced rooftop gardens and green rooves to several parts of the building.

Thus, I believe that my design is unique and attractive, aiming to draw in future university students and staff and modernise the rapidly changing city skyline.

NAME CHIARA PARISON

PROJECT LED MIRROR WITH STORAGE In my Major Design Project, I have created a full-length mirror that incorporates neon/LED lighting.

In my design I wanted to explore the use of lighting with furniture and how both components complement each other. By using lighting within my piece it is able to uphold a multifunctional aspect, that is a mirror and a light. This mirror will use colour and shape to make an aesthetically pleasing piece. The mirror will be placed in the chosen bedroom in my house and help create an ambience and a peaceful and relaxed environment. Along with the vibrant colour of the lights, it will create a diverse atmosphere with the different light colours radiating different moods and environment settings. While my intended target market is primarily myself and my family members, the versatility of the mirror’s design and lighting features could also make it an attractive choice for a broader audience.

The mirror’s design displays sophistication and timelessness, making it a versatile addition to any room. Behind the mirror is a cabinet that provides storage compartments that can accommodate a variety of items, from jewellery and cosmetics to accessories and personal belongings. These storage spaces are thoughtfully customisable, allowing users to adapt the mirror to their unique needs and preferences.

NAME STEPHANIE SCALIA

PROJECT ALWYN REHABILITATION HOSPITAL

For my major design project, I have redeveloped Alwyn Rehabilitation Hospital. Located within Strathfield, in the Inner West Sydney, it is an independently owned and operated, 26 bed private hospital that has been operating for over 60 years, and treats around 1000 patients every year recovering from orthopaedic surgery, strokes, work-related injuries and individuals requiring general rehabilitation. Through their facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, physiotherapy gym and minimal garden areas, they treat inpatients as well as running day programs for outpatients, to allow individuals to access the rehabilitation facilities after their stay at the hospital, to continue their recovery. Upon conducting primary research into the increasing demand for rehabilitation hospitals due to Australia’s ageing population, as well as patients decreased wellbeing outcomes within design of traditional hospitals

such as Alwyn, it became clear they are inadequate in providing holistic care for patients through considering all factors which affect their health.

Hence, my design brief was to redesign Alwyn Rehabilitation Hospital to maximise patient wellbeing and recovery through physical and environmental factors of the site through the consideration of a new exterior and internal layout of the hospital and landscaping. This redesign aims to promote further tranquillity and socialisation of patients as opposed to isolation, allowing them to regain a sense of independence and agency within the outdoor environment and patient areas.

This was considered within the implementation of outdoor patient courtyard spaces allowing patients to enjoy outdoor environments with fellow patients and safety of nearby staff.

Additionally, by considering the target market of low-mobility

patients recovering from surgery or injuries, easy access to facilities and careful consideration of internal circulation was needed, seen within the particular zoning of patient and staff areas to limit patient walking distances to facilities and everyday areas.

Maximisation of natural lighting through large windows and floor to ceiling curved facades allow the patient’s connection to the outdoors to be heightened when unable to physically be outside themselves. The minimalist, modern curved facade design creates further appeal to the hospital within a contemporary context, whilst maintaining its connection to the surrounding residential suburb.

NAME SIENNA SIGNORELLI

PROJECT NORTHERN RIVERS MULTIPURPOSE HOUSING

I created a concept for multipurpose housing in the Northern Rivers Region. Particularly, the town of Lismore, NSW is continually drastically impacted by major flooding. My Major Design Project provides safe, multifunctional housing at the Wollongbar Sports Facility primarily for flood affected and domestic violence victims in the Northern Rivers Region.

There has been a rapid increase in homelessness due to the 2022 major Northern Rivers region flooding events. There is a need to increase the temporary housing options available to meet the heightened need for housing post 2022 major Northern Rivers region flooding. My MDP provides a diverse range of accommodation to reduce redundancy of the current temporary housing for

flood-affected victims by providing crisis accommodation. The concept incorporates communal spaces such as green space, recreational and leisure facilities to meet the local council needs.

Furthermore, the NSW Government strongly endorses the ‘core and cluster’ designed crisis accommodation. Currently, in the Northern Rivers Region there is one women’s shelter for domestic or family violence victims to receive temporary housing located in central Lismore.

Ultimately, my MDP meets this need through prompting a diverse range of crisis accommodation to meet varying family needs, as well as communal space including counselling areas, sensory garden and a sensory room.

PROJECT REPURPOSED ENTERTAINMENT UNIT

Millions of skateboards are wasted each year, filling up landfill and wasting valuable resources. These boards are often discarded due to minor function or aesthetic issues, such as scratches or small cracks in the board. This leads to perfectly good plywood being sent to landfill. To combat this issue, I have designed an entertainment unit that features recycled skateboards. The boards are used as the main design feature of the unit as the table top and the handles. Integrating skateboards into this design showcases the intrinsic versatility within old, used skateboards.

This unit has been designed to meet the needs of my family and their storage needs. The unit features open storage specifically sized to store a PlayStation 5 and drawers designed to store games and cables. The open storage at the top is versatile and can be used to store cables and other accessories.

NAME JULIETTE STOURNARAS

PROJECT REDEVELOPMENT OF BURWOOD PLAZA My Major Design Project focuses on the redevelopment of Burwood Plaza. My concept showcases a design that transforms the current plaza into a newly multi-purposeful precinct space that incorporates residential, commercial and retail spaces. This involves integrating a newly open planned shopping centre followed by luxurious apartments built on top. The precinct is built around the implementation of greenery and a one of its kind pathway that guides the people through the communal space. This is further recognised within the secondary building including more retail, food spaces then a second level of leisure and recreational spaces. In doing this, my redevelopment prioritises connectivity within the community.

Burwood Plaza is an outdated centre which lacks cohesiveness and only complies with the very fundamental needs of a shopping centre. The NSW Government has announced Sydney Metro West, with a station in the Burwood North Precinct. With the new station anticipated to open in 2030, the metro will significantly improve available public transport infrastructure to support the creation of a vibrant and sustainable community at Burwood North. To adhere to this advancement in Burwood, the plaza must be redesigned in order to cater for the ever growing population. Maximising residential growth, prioritising greenery spaces as well as incorporating leisure and recreational spaces to ensure longevity within the suburb. The precinct provides the facilities and amenities that caters to Burwood’s unique culture and above all the needs of the target market.

NAME GIAAN TANNOUS

PROJECT REDEVELOPMENT OF HARBOURSIDE

My Major Design Project focuses on the redevelopment of the Sydney Harbourside shopping centre in Sydney’s Darling Harbour. My concept will showcase an ethical and sustainable purpose by transforming the shopping centre into a precinct that will offer residential and commercial spaces. This will involve a sustainable workplace for employees, enhancing the recreational space and optimising the outdoor area, ultimately with the aim of renewing tourist attractions in Sydney, Australia.

The city of Sydney is immensely multicultural, which means cultural significance should remain a vital part of the redevelopment. By including a range of significant cultural assets and amenities, it will ultimately draw more

tourists to the precinct. I needed to consider Sydney’s Darling Harbour, due to the vast diversity, as an area that needed to be thoughtfully designed throughout the design process.

From these demographics, my redevelopment needed to ensure that the facilities and amenities cater to the diverse nature of Darling Harbour and adhere to the needs of the target market.

I aimed to present the redevelopment with a new purpose, no longer just a shopping centre, but rather a multipurpose precinct that offers commercial and residential spaces, including workshops, wellbeing spaces, communal rooftops, green communal areas, recreational spaces and restaurants along the strip of the harbour.

NAME SOPHIE WAY

PROJECT DON DALE YOUTH DETENTION CENTRE

Australia’s youth justice system sees thousands of young individuals face incarceration.

Between 2020 and 2021, 3982 young individuals were incarcerated around Australia. With this being said, the underrepresentation of incarcerated youth in the media for long periods of time has resulted in high levels of mental health problems and physical harm in these centres going unnoticed. Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin is a prime example of this and so, I have chosen to redevelop it.

When attempting to combat the negative mental health seen in the Youth Justice system, it was important that I created a holistic redevelopment that addressed physical, social, psychological and medical needs

of inmates. This has ultimately allowed incarcerated children to receive the same education, physical activities, medical and psychological treatment as other children their age, establishing their ultimate punishment for their crimes as one where their liberties and freedom have been revoked, rather than further psychological harm.

This Major Design Project highlights the opportunities for the reconfiguring of current detention facilities for juveniles to result in extensive benefits to young people, the community and society at large.

My design brief is to design and model the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre with a specific focus on creating a building that improves the target market’s mental health and so promotes

positive behaviour, rehabilitating young people to contribute successfully to broader society.

NAME EVELYN ZAMMIT

PROJECT FIVE DOCK LEISURE CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT

My concept is to redevelop Five Dock Leisure Centre (FDLC) located in Five Dock NSW. The objective for this project was to create a sustainable restoration of the centre that would enhance the aesthetics of the existing structure as well as improve its functionality externally and internally.

1991, but has since fallen into a dilapidated state after minimal upkeep, resulting in dwindling memberships. This has provided me with the opportunity to refurbish the centre – a genuine need – to cater for the rapid growth that will occur in Sydney’s Inner West.

With Sydney’s rapid growth in population, and that of the Inner West, specifically, Five Dock will see immense redevelopment and growth in the next decade.

Government planning is already in motion with plans from Canada Bay Council ‘Our Future 2036’ and Sydney Metro’s project ‘Sydney Metro West’’. Once completed, these projects will transform Sydney’s Inner West, linking communities to rail services and resulting in social benefits such as increased employment opportunities, improved education and services and providing opportunities for local businesses.

A thriving leisure centre provides facilities to encourage the community to be socially active.

Having an active and vibrant community improves wellbeing and in the long term reduces burdens to health care and taxpayer dollars. The recovery from COVID-19 has been challenging for many community socioeconomic groups resulting in negative impacts to mental and

physical health.

By redeveloping FDLC, I aim to reinvigorate the community by encouraging them to get active and create opportunities for social interaction. Hence the inclusion of wellbeing areas like the Zen Garden, Pilates Studio, Sauna/ steam room, and the Cafe with an outdoor courtyard. Further, the redevelopment has been carefully considered to meet the current and future needs of an expanded community and has taken into account improving accessibility and inclusivity for all groups to support those who are experiencing difficulty in their daily lives and those who are pursuing improvement in their physical wellbeing.

NAME ELENA ZENGOVSKI

PROJECT MULTIGENERATIONAL HOUSING CONCEPT

For my Major Design Project, I created three multigenerational homes on the Haberfield Defence Land to showcase a new typology that caters towards varying needs and the growing popularity of intergenerational living.

In Australia, amongst the increasing house prices and housing shortage, there is immense pressure on home buyers and existing homeowners. The 2022 Australian Homelessness Monitor found that, as a result of rental prices, there was a significant increase in people seeking help at homelessness services in the past four years, as well as younger people moving back home due to reasons such as housing affordability.

Additionally, evidenced in the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, there are many concerns that come with aged care homes that present a great issue and need for change such as neglect, increased loneliness

and isolation in adults. As typical families are increasingly diverging from the traditional model with younger generations experiencing increasing financial pressures, and the aged care system in crisis, there is an increasing need for multigenerational houses.

More and more houses are containing three generations, however stigmatised due to issues such as privacy and independence. This housing concept will allow for independence as well as support, exploring ways of creating private and communal space within a multigenerational household, using available and sought after parcels of land in a way to alleviate Australia’s housing crisis.

Incorporating functionality and aesthetics, working harmoniously with nature and surrounding environments to create sustainable design, the project will also address growing climate concerns and the ways design can alleviate this.

NAME MIA ARDAGNA

FOCUS AREA APPAREL the iconic babydoll silhouette.

I have chosen the use of satin fabric to incorporate the high quality materials which are used by Khait NY. The dress is specifically designed for formal events which require simplicity and elegance. The intended target market is young adults making it essential that the design can be easily laundered, is breathable and comfortable to wear. I was able to achieve these criteria through including a poplin lining fabric which provides good absorption and breathability for the wearer.

Additionally, my incorporation and consideration of the elements and principles of design has allowed me to create volume and movement within my design.

Additionally, the monotone colour scheme allows for greater focus on fabric manipulation techniques which provide texture within the design and complement the lustrous fabric choice. The final piece of my MTP is a headband which is heavily decorated with gold beading and embroidery creating additional texture and a small pop of colour.

I designed and constructed a fully lined dress within minimal surface decoration which consists of a bodice and skirt. I was inspired

by Contemporary designer Khaite NY and their modern take on the babydoll dress. Similarly, my inspiration also stems from 18th century Europe and the empire

waistline which is seen throughout a variety of apparel pieces. The simplistic use of fabric decoration techniques has allowed me to create a simplistic and elegant dress which features an empire waistline, short bubble hemmed skirt, sweetheart neckline and gathered sleeves to connect to

NAME MATILDA BALL

FOCUS AREA COSTUME

This garment is a costume, consisting of a full-length coat with a double-breasted front closure, a wide notched collar and pockets, utilising a vintage 1949 morning housecoat pattern.

Made from black delustered satin, the coat acts as the underlayer and base of my major work.

The gathering underneath the opening of the pockets creates dimension and movement in the costume. The pockets are large, and functional for actors to store necessary goods throughout the performance. The 2cm open seam allowances allow for freedom of size change, should

the actor need an adjustment in the size of the costume. The pockets sit relatively low on the garment, allowing for the corset to sit above them and appear cohesive. The coat features cuffs on the sleeves, with silver buckle detailing, incorporating the punk, Vivienne Westwood inspiration of my garment. This element is also featured across the corset, further unifying the corset and ensuring the costume presents as a pair. The underbust corset, worn over top of the coat, is made out of 100% polyester pleather. The corset is lined with 100% polyester black lining, providing the actor with comfort while wearing and allowing for the corset to be easily worn and put on and taken off over the under piece of the costume, the coat.

The corset is then further biasbound with the delustred black satin from the coat, across the top and bottom of the garment. This unifies the garment, introducing elements of the base layer in the costume into the corset while providing a seamless transition from one layer to the next. Flexible boning is sewn to the outer layer of fabric with parallel seams to reinforce the boning and add structure to the corset. The closure for the corset is a front busk, a traditional and practical closure acting as both a functional and aesthetic element of the garment, incorporating the silver elements across my major work.

The corset features a large silver buckle feature on the front of the corset, unifying elements from the coat element of my major work.

NAME ELLA CURRAN

FOCUS AREA COSTUME I have designed and constructed a highly decorative costume to be worn by ‘Juliet’ in a stage reproduction of Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo and Juliet.

Costumes must utilise aesthetic properties to communicate the key ideas and themes of the production, as well as elements of the character’s personality.

In pairing with this inspiration, I have also been influenced by Look 24 of French designer Julien Fournie’s 2010 Fall Haute Couture Collection entitled ‘Has it all come to this?’ Fournie uses beading, embroidery and dyeing on his designs to imitate the appearance of blood. The beading and embroidery on the cape, as well as the dyeing on the skirt of my MTP is heavily inspired by Look 24, as I feel it connects to the themes of drama and passion inherent in Luhrmann’s film. I have also taken inspiration from 1990s fashion in my MTP. The dress consists of two skirt and top pieces, both of which reflect prominent 90s fashion trends.

The garment is a decorative costume composed of a lined corset, a-line skirt with a tulle overlay, and arm length cape. The floor-length, full a-line skirt with a tulle overlay is gathered to the waistband. The shoulders of the cape have been dyed with Rit Dye Synthetic Sunguard in the shade ‘Racing Red.’ A combination of light red, dark red and burgundy clear beads cascade down the shoulders to imitate the effect of dripping.

NAME BIANCA D’AVERSA FOCUS AREA APPAREL

Fitted dress coat consisting of an outer fabric of a dark navy blue wool-cashmere blend, featuring two fabrics in the lining: blue and grey floral shaped printing on a white cotton Liberty of London fabric for the torso and skirt, dark blue floral printed polyester Liberty of London fabric for the sleeve and pocket lining. There are shoulder pads, along with princess seams in the torso, with a round collar and doublebreasted buttons. The skirt of the coat is knee to mid-calf length.

The off-white wool embroidery that is along the hemline is inspired by the key musical figures of the 1950s, featuring song motifs from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and the Rat Pack as a whole, along with pearlescent glass beaded text with the corresponding song title.

The front right of the skirt depicts Frank Sinatra’s ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, with a moon, rocket and Sinatra’s iconic hat. The back right of the skirt is inspired by Dean Martin’s ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’, with embroidery of the Painted Ladies houses. The Rat Pack’s ‘We Open in Venice’, depicting a panoramic view of Venice skylines, featuring the Rialto Bridge as the centrepiece.

The final piece of embroidery is based on Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York’, detailing the Manhattan skyline with the Statue of Liberty being emphasised through its size and positioning on the piece.

NAME ISABEL HART

FOCUS AREA APPAREL As an apparel item, my garment is a formal, floor-length dress, inspired by fashion during the Old Hollywood period specifically during the 1950s. The dress is composed of a bodice and below-waist straight skirt with a back slit, including an overlay.

Over the constructed satin bodice is an additional layer of lightweight chiffon fabric. My garment incorporates a strapless sweetheart neckline which leads to asymmetrical ruching down the fitted dress. The garment is gathered and draped along the middle to left back of the dress.

Asymmetric gathering runs down the centre of the garment to the left hip, further leading towards the low back of the wearer drawing inspiration by designer Madeleine Vionnet and Cecilia Tallis’ infamous 1930s emerald green dress. The gathering is in the deep teal chiffon to match to the main satin fabric.

Featured along the seam of the gathering are hand embellished crystals, pearl buttons and beads beginning from the top of the gathering towards the lower back.

This communicates my inspiration of Marilyn Monroe’s costume in the iconic movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The dress uses cream pearl beads, green crystal beads as well as small and large pearl buttons as the embellishments.

The garment incorporates an overlay skirt made in the sheer fabric that extends as a train towards the left side of the dress.

Along the bottom of the chiffon train is the addition of fabric flowers, these are created from the deep teal lightweight satin fabric with off white pearl beading at the centre of the flower.

FOCUS AREA APPAREL

My Major Textiles Project (MTP) apparel piece is a corset and skirt set inspired by the Mugler 1994 Spring Ready-To-Wear Collection.

Mugler’s designs were heavily influenced by architectural shapes and bold, unique fabric choices, impacting the differentiation of his brand. These influences were broadly showcased throughout his 90s collections, particularly in his corsetry in his spring 1994 collection, which my design aims to embody. Mugler’s wide use of texture throughout his 1994 spring collection has remained a prominent component of my design. This was added to small aspects of the corset through

the use of applique on the bust cups and small sections of beading on both the corset and the skirt, communicating the minimal, sleek yet eye-catching design ultimately upholding Mugler’s Spring Collection as a historical influence on my MTP. Further, my design choices grasp inspiration from nature, more directly aimed at colder seasons and winter atmospheres. The cold elements of nature such as snow and icy environments motivate the inspiration of my garments and drive the influence of the creative elements. My MTP design’s primary influence is historical corsetry, specifically

80s corsetry. Eighties corsetry saw the introduction of the built-in bust cups, which will be reflected through my cosets design. Through this, I strived to uphold a minimal and sleek design predominantly focused on the structural elements of the corset.

NAME GABRIELLA LENNOX FOCUS AREA COSTUME

For my Major Textiles Project (‘MTP’), I have constructed a 100% polyester velvet tailored suit consisting of a sports jacket and slacks. I have harnessed inspiration from pop star David Bowie, who was synonymous with bright colours, patterns and androgynous style choices.

This has creatively influenced my design as I aim to draw on his many bold and memorable stylistic decisions in order to create a costume that honours his memory as a fashion and music icon. This is reflected in the self-drafted angular lapel that emphasises his experimental fashion choices. The suit jacket

is lined with a 100% cotton liberty with a warm tone paisley pattern that encapsulates the wild and colourful fashion sphere in the 70s. As well as this, I have been influenced by Givenchy’s 2019 fall collection as each look harnesses colour in a creative way, I have utilised this inspiration in a creative way as I am using a bold light aqua as the focal fabric for my design. Similarly, David Bowie was renowned for wearing experimental fabrics such as suede, leather and synthetic materials such as vinyl which reflected his historical context. I have been influenced by this in my MTP as I used velvet in order

to creatively evoke the element of texture. This visually tactile element is aesthetically pleasing for onlookers due to its lustrous and soft nature. Along with this, I will utilise the element of line in order to reflect the Givenchy collection. I will do this by ironing pleats in the trousers in order to elongate the figure and creatively experiment with the silhouette of the suit.

NAME CHIARA PLACANICA FOCUS AREA APPAREL

My textile major work is a strapless, fitted corset and wrap skirt made from different types and colours of recycled denim. It is inspired by Schiaprelli’s 2023 Spring Summer Collection. I was also inspired by corsetry and baroque architecture which is replicated on my garments.

Both bust cups of the corset are pleated with one bust cup painted gold with fabric paint and the other one being left with the standard blue denim colour to replicate the Schiaparelli denim jacket in the collection. There is gold couching done with a zig-zag stitch on the sewing machine as well as gold beading

hand sewn across half of the bodice to contrast with the gold bust cup on the opposing side of the corset; and is closed off with a lace-up back as well as a button on the bottom to secure it. My skirt is a wrap skirt made from a variety of thick recycled denim. I have drafted the front wrap panel of the skirt to mimic my desired skirt design. Silver buttons were placed down the front side of the skirt for aesthetic purposes and to correlate with the denim element. I have placed a pocket from the recycled jeans on the front of the wrap panel for functional and aesthetic purposes and to correlate with

my design inspiration. Gold beading was hand sewn across the skirt for aesthetic purposes and to contrast with the lack of dimension in the skirt. I have also sewn couching into the skirt with the same zig-zag stitch used in the corset’s surface decoration.

The skirt is closed off with a zipper at the back along with a button to correlate with the back of the corset.

My Body of Work explores the intricate connection between humankind and the natural world, along with various roles present within. My aim is to encourage ponderings of life and death and despite humanity’s harrowing effects on our environment, emphasise

the enduring interdependence between nature and mankind.

Our actions, whether positive or negative, reverberate throughout the natural world, thus it is important to be reminded of nature’s preciousness. My artwork also delves into the dynamics of predator and prey relationships,

NAME ANNA LE EXPRESSIVE FORM DRAWING ARTWORK TITLE HISTRIONICALLY ME

My Body of Work explores the personal search for identity of adolescents on the cusp of adulthood. The series of three drawings is inspired by Jan Nelson’s stylistic exploration of this transition from youthful innocence to adulthood through a cascade of colour, excessive

props and searching expressions.

The two figures embody thematic ideas of sport and recreation and celebration that combine elements of nostalgia and modern popular culture; used to represent the joy sparked from aspects of childhood. The title itself refers to Tim Storrier’s The histrionic

wayfarer, which presents a dramatic self-portrait of a subject carrying a comically excessive collection of items that guide their sense of identity.

NAME CHARLIE MCFADDEN EXPRESSIVE FORM GRAPHIC DESIGN ARTWORK TITLE IDENTITY THROUGH CHAOS My body of work aims to challenge preconceived notions of ‘high art’ and ultimately what is considered art, referring to connotations of the devaluation associated with street art and Neo-expressionistic stylistic choices. The portrait photography is inspired by the portraiture of the Renaissance and Romantic period, therefore capturing the values of idealism and the subliminal through the use of delicate body positioning and the cloth-adorned attire of the models. This, in turn, is subverted through the introduction of a juxtaposing mixed-media stylistic approach, encompassing the idea of anti-art and Dadaism in order to provoke the audience to question what they consider to be ‘real’ art.

NAME ALLEGRA PERRI EXPRESSIVE FORM PRINTMAKING ARTWORK TITLE PULLING THE PLUG My body of work transforms the famous woodblock artwork, The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai, into a recontextualized symbol of global threat. The disaster displayed reaches far beyond the traditional fishermen pictured within the original work to represent the environmental impact on us all in terms of looming global warming resulting in rising water levels. The reverberating optical illusion of this liquid mass with its monstrous claws symbolises the unrelenting retaliation of nature and the vulnerability of human beings as a result of their self-destructive ways.

NAME AVA RODRIGUES EXPRESSIVE FORM PRINTMAKING ARTWORK TITLE VIBRANT ALLURES AS WINTER ENDURES

In Artmaking Practice I drew heavily from Zanko’s effective use of solid blocks of shadow to create dramatic yet clean and sophisticated portrayals of suburban houses.

My artwork is a nod to the psychological impact of light and its ability to, like ‘Moths to a flame’, draw people in, or in this case out. VIVID is a celebration of architecture and sculpture which focuses on light as a way to bring people together and out into the CBD during winter, as a way to liven spirits and inject wonder into these usually mundane structures. My composition is a surreal invitation for the audience framed within a doorway, acting as a visual lure to compel them to go ‘outside’ and explore my luminescent wonderland.

My Artmaking Practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Helmo, Banksy.

My Body of Work explores the harrowing and challenging topic of paediatric cancer. The centre soft pastel-based portrait depicts my cousin Tom and his journey with Rhabdomyosarcoma; a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissue.

Flanking his figure are witnesses to his suffering, the people most significant within his life, who are now a part of his journey. I have adopted Banksy’s infamous Love Is In The Bin as a metaphor for the destructive impact a diagnosis such as this has had not only on himself but also on those closest to him.
