From the Principal
The Class of 2022 has delighted us with their strong results in both the HSC and the IB Diploma. They have done extremely well despite interruptions to their studies in Years 10 and 11 thanks to the restrictions, lockdowns and remote learning periods of the COVID19 pandemic.
When combining the results of both the HSC and IB Diploma scores our students came 48th in NSW. It is pleasing to see that we have remained in the top 50 schools in the state.
Central to our approach at Santa Sabina is a holistic education seeking achievement in a diversity of areas. Our students and our teachers pursue excellence in critical thinking, knowledge and skill development. This is underpinned by enthusiastic involvement in cultural and sporting endeavours and, most importantly, service learning. Santa Scholars focuses on the academic achievements of our students in 2022 and not just on the school leavers Read on for highlights from across the College, from senior years down to the younger years where academic rigour has its foundations.

Stand-out performances
The Class of 2022 is to be congratulated on their success in both the HSC and IB Diploma courses and their many other endeavours. In 2022, as the world was learning to live with COVID-19, we need to recognise the impact the last three years had on their education, with lockdowns, restrictions, and diverse modes of learning. Prior to the Trial Examinations in August, these students had not had a formal examination. Yet they embraced the challenge and quickly learned how to plan, prepare, study, and sometimes fail and pick themselves up and start again. We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved.
At Santa Sabina, we saw 124 students complete the HSC and IB Diploma courses and in addition, 23 students studied individual subjects in a pathway or accelerated program. They have also shaped the world around them with their pursuits and passion for music, national and international sport, the arts, technology, sustainability, community and philanthropy.
The benefits of balancing their academic studies with these co-curricular pursuits is something I am pleased to see many have mentioned in their scholar profiles (starting page 6).
I would like to recognise the commitment these students made right up until their examinations. They worked collectively to support each other, sharing resources and participating in study groups and holiday workshops. For some of these students, the learning began 16 years ago in Mary Bailey House. They have been taught by many teachers over that time and it is important to recognise the impact the teaching and support staff have had on their growth and development. These students received an unprecedented number of university early entry offers this year. I am confident these students will go on to innovate, create and shake the world.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
My teachers have provided me with unwavering support throughout all stages of my school experience. During my senior studies, my teachers created a positive and productive approach to learning, encouraging students to collaborate and uplift one another allowing me and my peers to make the most of the Diploma Programme. I am also extremely grateful for my peers, especially the IBDP Class of 2022, who were my most valued support system throughout my senior studies.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2023?
Surround yourselves with those who uplift you, push you and allow you to recognise your potential. Your senior years are
a time to be inquisitive and curious. In order to reach your personal best, it is crucial to collaborate and learn from your peers. Working through both exciting and stressful moments with your classmates by asking questions, challenging each other and working together will only make you a stronger and more confident learner.
BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA?
My best moments at Santa are the lifelong friendships I have formed from Kindergarten to Year 12. Santa Sabina’s focus on community allowed me to surround myself with kind and compassionate individuals who have supported me throughout my senior studies. Santa Sabina has provided me with a well-rounded education, including academics, music, sporting and social justice opportunities. Academic enrichment experiences have allowed me to foster my curiosity and love for learning, and social justice initiatives provided me with a fulfilling and enriched school experience.

HOW DID SANTA SABINA HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
At Santa, the strong support network of teachers and students saw me right through to the end of the HSC. For my teachers especially, their dedication, patience and expertise were second to none. They fostered an environment where making mistakes was seen as an opportunity to learn, asking questions was encouraged, and we could share our thoughts and ideas confidently.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2023?
Be kind to yourself! It’s so easy to get caught up in an HSC bubble, where we become so concentrated on one mark here or there that we forget to take a step back and reflect on our achievements. Taking
just a couple of minutes to slow down and celebrate your successes really helps you stay motivated. And most importantly, enjoy every moment with your Year 12 peers –it’s the good times with your cohort that will shape your last year of high school.
BEST MOMENT/S AT SANTA?
This year’s Dom’s Day celebration definitely emerges as a standout from my time at Santa. It was extremely meaningful to continue the tradition of walking on Dom’s Plot for the first time as a Year 12 cohort, and was a rite of passage I had looked forward to since my early days at the College.

Year 12 is a lot of work so finding people who you can rely on and who support you for who you are is essential to getting through the year. Reach out for

PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS AND GOLD MEDALS
Questioning the answers
At Santa Sabina the study of philosophy and ethics is not considered niche – these are sought after options, particularly in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 where the students can choose to study elective Philosophy and World Studies or to join the co-curricular option of training for and participating in the Australian Ethics Olympiad.
In 2022 the number of students studying Philosophy and World Studies across Years 9 and 10 grew to 70 by the end of the year. In the co-curricular ethics program, our teams in the national Middle School Olympiads of 2021 and 2022 both received gold.
Our success in both the classroom course and the co-curricular activity indicates a healthy thirst for knowledge.
YEAR 7 (2022) STUDENT MIA BECK SUMMED UP THE BENEFITS:
‘The Ethics Olympiad has been a significant way for me to broaden my perspective on philosophy as well as my thoughts and questions about the world. I’ve improved my ability to see the small details and the big picture in many real-life situations, which I believe I’ve learned from studying ethical cases.
is the first representative from Santa selected in a number of years. Molly trained with the team from IGSA schools and debated against other representative squads across the state.
Strong results In the Archdale competition (run by IGSA) meant our Senior and Year 9 teams both progressed through to the Quarter Finals. The year 7B and 8A teams narrowly missed out on the Quarter Finals on a countback.
With the incredible support we received, my team and I have made a great achievement this year and I hope to continue with our success in the future.’
The benefits of studying Philosophy and World Studies as an elective also brings benefits other subjects. One of our two Philosophy teachers, Latisha Touma, says the students have really warmed to the course.
‘In class we analyse the validity and soundness of arguments and also attempt to understand the world around us through philosophy, politics and psychology’, says Latisha.
‘Philosophy is the “why”. Students are
encouraged to question. Every day in other subject areas we have questions, and we have answers. In Philosophy we question the answers.’
Philosophy is not just for the high potential learners. At Santa it is proven to engage learners of all aptitudes, including those who signed up with little knowledge of the subject but rather an interest in ideas and in extending their thinking.
‘Philosophy is a life skill, you do not have to be gifted in it’, says Latisha. ‘It’s for those who like to extend themselves further. We have students in the course who had no idea about philosophy when they started but now it’s one of their favourite subjects.’

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS
Finalists
As finalists in the BIOTech Futures Challenge, students Jayden Xie, Aditi Kamath and Isabella Huang of Years 10 and 9 presented their project, Heart Connect, at a symposium at the University of Sydney in August. We were told that our team’s project stood out among the countless submissions they read. At the symposium their work was marked by an expert panel of judges and watched by distinguished guests from academia, industry, and Parliament.
BIOTech Futures is an innovation and mentorship program that aims to empower the brightest young minds. The initiative connects students with world-class academics to think creatively and scientifically about solutions to challenges in the fields of health, medicine, sustainability, humanitarian aid and the environment.
Heart Connect was the students’ response to the Challenge’s requirement to research a current problem in health and medicine and develop an innovative solution to tackle the problem with the support of a university mentor.

We created a concept that uses AI for good in the world. We chose to focus on how we could help combat the shortage of medical professionals in hospitals and the information gap between patients’ families and medical professionals.
In the last three years our hospitals have been overtaken by COVID19 and as a result, there has been a significant strain on the medical field with the normal number of hospitalisations plus all the COVID19 patients. This has caused a shortage of medical professionals in hospitals and constraints on how much time they spend with families of patients. We created an AI concept called ‘CONNECTo’ that collects and uses data within the hospitals’ database and interprets that data to terminology that the patient and their family can easily understand, using problem solving and linguistic AI. For example, if
a family member is in the hospital and has had a blood test taken, a nurse will log the blood test results into the hospital’s database. The AI in our software will take the blood test results, and will interpret them into simple terms, then explain the blood test results and decipher whether certain levels are higher or lower than others. A family member of the patient will be able to log into the app, view the blood test results, and the explanation of those results.
This competition was challenging, but it enabled us to master a range of new skills while utilising new technologies to solve real world problems.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world’s greatest thinkers. He perceived the interconnected nature of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to discover the unknown.
The da Vinci Decathlon competition places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking, problem solving and creativity.
This year in teams of eight, our students explored the theme ‘patterns’ and how this applies to the disciplines – Art and Poetry, Cartography, Code Breaking, Creative Producers, Engineering, English, Mathematics, Science, Ideation and Legacy – a discipline that recognises the achievements of Leonardo da Vinci, significant people and inventions and significant events from the past and present.
We celebrate the talents of our da Vinci students through their commendable achievements and their effort to strive to understand and see the interconnected nature of all things.
The students achieved commendable results, with placings across most of the ten disciplines including the hard-toachieve first, second and third placing and overall placing.

Year 1 winning maths investigators
Well done to our MANSW winners! Year 1 won their section for the project ‘Flood Appeal’ and Year 3 received a Highly Commended award for their project ‘Design Challenge – Planning a new outdoor learning space’. The competition – Investigating with Mathematics – is run by the Mathematical Association of NSW Inc.
The competition involved students formulating their own questions about a service initiative to form Mathematical investigations.
‘Flood Appeal’ began as a service initiative to assist the students of St Joseph’s School Woodburn whose school buildings were lost in the devasting floods in northern NSW in early 2022. The winning mathematics investigation began with the
students exploring the height of the flood waters. The students then analysed the number of students and care package donations collected by our community. Once the donations were counted, the students used their mathematical skills to examine the different properties and masses of the donations.
Finally, the students took on the role of the courier driver and used their digital technology skills to code Bee-Bots
● NATIONAL WRITING
Rainbow Matters
Abigail Dawson of Year 7 had no idea she was good at writing until 2022 when her work was shortlisted in the national writing competition, ‘What Matters’. Her stunning piece, ‘Rainbow Matters’, effectively and poetically conveys the important issue of respecting other cultures.
The competition, one of Santa Sabina’s enrichment opportunities for gifted students, is organised by The Whitlam Institute within the University of Western Sydney. Several Year 7 Santa Sabina students entered along with thousands of students from across Australia. They wrote on issues that were important to them.
Abigail originally wrote her piece in 2020 as a speech in response to the Black Lives Matter movement but it had remained unspoken.
‘I have always had interests in learning about different cultures and traditions’, she says.
‘I was very shocked to find out I had been shortlisted as I did not enter the competition in an attempt to win but just to see what happens in writing competitions and if I would continue doing this. Although it was unexpected I was very happy and proud when I got the results.’
This is Abigail’s first entry in a writing competition.
The students engaged in a variety of mathematical concepts and skills that further enhanced a hands-on, purposeful, real-world approach to Mathematics. Investigating with Mathematics tasks meet new syllabus outcomes allowing for a deep understanding of their world by applying the concepts and skills explicitly taught to solve student questions.

● LITTERARTY WASTE-ART COMPETITION
Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival
Enrichment at Santa Sabina College takes many forms and includes our student artists submitting works for external competitions. In March the artworks of several Primary Years students went on display at Bondi Beach as finalists in the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival.
The competition focused on promoting concepts about closed loop recycling, litter and rubbish impacts on the ocean and creative and thoughtful ways to make better everyday decisions by turning trash to treasure. Students developed their artistic intentions in artmaking and considered how these affect the look of the work, its details and an audience’s response. They were able to select and explore different aspects of subject matter in particular ways in their making of artworks. Our young artists were provided with opportunities to question and discuss the use of plastics and disposable materials and how they can manipulate and experiment with these to create original individual artworks and produce less waste as a result.
● CONSERVATION AWARENESS THROUGH ART MAKING
Wild At Art
WORKS SELECTED FOR THE FINALS
Congratulations to Ava Anderson of Year 4 whose painting, ‘Blue Breasted Fairy Wren’ won Best Artwork from a child with a disability in the Australian Conservation Foundation’s ‘Wild At Art’ competition. The competition attracted 4600 entries from across Australia.
TEN-YEAR-OLD AVA’S ARTIST’S STATEMENT IS AS FOLLOWS: I decided to research and paint Australia’s Blue Breasted Fairy Wren because it is such a pretty bird. Blue is my favourite colour, and I love blue birds.
The Blue Breasted Fairy Wren mainly lives in southern Western Australia
where wheat is farmed. Even before I was born in 2012, it was predicted to be a threatened bird species, since the land where they live was logged for wheat farming. Sadly, they are now a threatened bird species. Farmers did not listen to stop wheat farming in the area.
Even though wheat is important, the Blue Breasted Fairy Wren is just as precious. I think getting the balance right between farming and Blue Breasted Fairy Wren numbers is essential to stop our whole ecosystem from falling apart. Otherwise, our beautiful Blue Breasted Fairy Wren may not exist anymore, which makes me very sad.

Year 5 Science Symposium
National Science Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
On 17 August, the students of Gioia House donned their lab coats and participated in a Science Symposium to celebrate National Science Week. They were provided with the opportunity to rotate through a variety of experiments and demonstrations that sparked their curiosity and encouraged them to be fascinated by the world in which we live.
The students were challenged to beat gravity, use chemical reactions to make raisins dance and blow up balloons, test the density of liquids through the construction of lava lamps and rainbows, test aerodynamics through paper aircraft construction, and test engineering principles while constructing bridges.

Group 4 – Isabella Xiao, Maree Sialepis, Madeleine Loncar – placed first and Group 1 –Sophia Witting, Keira Van, Victoria Kim –placed second.
The students said, ‘We really enjoyed the day, it was a great opportunity to work together and apply the titration techniques we encounter in our curriculum to a new and exciting challenge. We encourage next year’s students to get involved as well! We have immensely enjoyed participating in the challenge and improved our titration skills.’
THE STUDENTS LOVED THEIR INVESTIGATIONS:
In Mr Dunphy’s Science class we investigated gravity. We learnt about our base and centre of gravity, and how they affect what we are able to physically do. We participated in a series of demonstrations where we had to challenge gravity. One task required us to jump forward whilst holding our toes. This proved impossible because to jump forward, your centre of gravity must move ahead of your base. Holding onto your toes prevents you from making the balance shift. We discovered how the artful use of gravity can throw you totally off balance.
UNA QUINN
I enjoyed discovering that salt dissolved in water can change the mass and density of water. My group were able to create a segmented water rainbow in the test tube.

2022 SANTA SCHOLARS 21 ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS
Honouring achievements at Speech Night & Speech Day
Speech Night (Years 5 to 12) and Speech Day (Kindergarten to Year 4) are not just occasions to celebrate students and acknowledge staff. At Santa Sabina they are also events which feature an ex-student as guest of honour. In both these events in late 2022, our entire community gathered for insights and inspiration from the Santa Sabina family, on and off campus.
Our Speech Night returned to its full glory this year in a Sydney city location, drawing the line under the recent years’ COVID-affected adaptations of the annual event. In the stunning location of the State Theatre in Market Street we honoured our highest achieving students in a colourful celebration. The agenda of prize giving and formal speeches was punctuated by exciting performances from the Senior Hip Hop team, Chamber Orchestra, Brass Ensemble and Chamber Choir and Bella Merlino of Year 12 recreated her award-winning speech, ‘It’s time we call it for what it is’.
Awards were presented for scholarly endeavour, creative and critical thinking, outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service. Top awards for Year 12, the General Proficiency Award and the Sr Sheila Flynn OP Award, were presented to Joanna Benedict and Sienna Ters respectively.
We were inspired by speeches from our College Principal, Paulina Skerman, and Chair of the Board, Steven Graham, and were enriched and entertained by our Guest of Honour Julie de Fina of the Class of 2000.
In her humourous speech, Ms de Fina regaled us with tales from her College days and her amusing aversion to certain sports and to visiting Tallong. Nonetheless, she understood the attractions of such opportunities to her fellow students, but soon found her own fervour in our Black Box Theatre. Here and in Drama classes, she found her passion and her tribe. She told us it was her drama training here that led to her successful career in television comedy and drama.
