Venice Home Sales Spike in Part due to ‘Silicon Beach’ Transplants Annual report shows single-family home sales spiking in Venice-area B y S am C atanz ar o A recent report says that single-family home sales in the Venice-area have spiked the past year in part due to East Coast and Northern California buyers “moving live within the close reach of Silicon Beach.”

A recent report titled The Red Paper 2020 Press from real estate firm The Agency finds that the ‘Beach Cities’ – defined as Venice, Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach – saw a 9 percent increase in single-family home sales

and median prices over 2019 levels.

“With driving to the office not top of the mind in 2020, the Beach Cities saw more buyers seeking sand, surf, quality schools and a walkable lifestyle that offered outdoor recreation amongst stay-at-home orders,” reads the report.

It was not just the sun, sand and surf that attracted buyers, however, the report states.

“Early in the pandemic, Venice, Playa del Rey and the Marina saw on the influence of buyers from the East Coast, Northern California and Greater LA moving to live within the close reach of Silicon Beach’s tech centers,” reads the report, which is published annually.

Lifeguards Make Over 70 Rescues During Weekend

Wind swells, inshore holes, warm weather result in buys weekend for lifeguards

Summer-esque weather combined with a combination of hazardous ocean conditions resulted in a busy weekend for Venice Beach lifeguards.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division a combination of strong winds, large inshore holes and crowded beaches made for weekend tally of 71 ocean rescues across the region.

“Saturday morning, we saw crowded lineups early before strong N/NE winds impacted much of the Santa Monica Bay. These cross/offshore winds aligned with uneven ocean floor and short period wind swell to create hazardous conditions for many surfers/swimmers resulting in several ocean rescues,” lifeguards said. “Inshore holes continue to be leading cause for ocean rescues over the past couple of weeks.”

as another off-season beach day brought flocks of people to local beaches. With warm weather expected next weekend as well, it looks as lifeguards will continue to be busy.

So what causes these inshore holes?

“At certain times of the year, especially during or after periods of large surf, the ocean bottom can be very uneven. Waves break in shallow water and displace the sand on the ocean floor. Ocean patrons may notice this condition while walking through the water close to shore, when just one step sends you from ankle-deep to waist-deep water,” lifeguards say.

According to lifeguards, these areas may be somewhat difficult to identify and beachgoers should consult a lifeguard before entering the water to get a report of the conditions.

Leslie Aguilar Wins Inaugural Arnold Maeda Manzanar Pilgrimage Granta

Grant will provide a stipend for Leslie, who will be working with the Manzanar Committee

In December, 2020, the Manzanar Committee and the Venice Japanese American Memorial Monument (VJAMM) Committee announced Leslie Aguilar of Los Angeles, a recent graduate of UCLA, as the inaugural recipient of the Arnold Maeda Manzanar Pilgrimage Grant. The grant will provide a stipend for Leslie, who will be working with the Manzanar Committee to help organize the 52nd Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, to be held virtually on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

“I feel honored and excited to be given the opportunity to work alongside passionate individuals for this amazing event,” Leslie said.

Venice Family Clinic Merges With Local Community Health Center

Local community health centers Venice Family Clinic and South Bay Family Health Care to merge later this year

Venice Family Clinic is merging with another community health center to bring care to a contiguous service area that will stretch from South Bay to the Santa Monica Mountains.

This week, Venice Family Clinic and South Bay Family Health Care announced that the board of directors of both nonprofit organizations have agreed to merge.

According to a February 18 press release, the two community health centers–each part of their communities for more than 50 years–will join forces later this year to create one unified organization.

“We will be stronger together, which will result in better, more comprehensive care for our patients,” says Jann Hamilton Lee, CEO of South Bay Family Health Care. “From years of collaborating, we know that our organizations are aligned in mission, values, and culture, and share a profound commitment to delivering care with compassion, dignity and respect.”

Patients of both health centers can expect the same “high quality care they currently enjoy,” the duo said in their announcement, both during the transition and after the merger is complete. Afterwards, the unified organization will bring an expanded set of programs and services to patients by leveraging the unique and complementary expertise of each entity.

For example, South Bay is one of a few sites in Los Angeles County that offers CenteringPregnancy™ and CenteringParenting™, a patient-centered approach that is proven to yield better outcomes for prenatal patients and to reduce racial disparities in preterm births. Venice Family Clinic is a pioneer in serving the distinct needs of people experiencing homelessness and is a local leader in street medicine, which brings health care directly to people who currently lack housing.

finding innovative ways to care and advocate for our patients, regardless of their ability to pay or immigration status,” said Elizabeth Benson Forer, CEO at Venice Family Clinic.

In total, the two organizations currently serve 45,000 patients in neighboring service areas, with some current areas of overlap. The combined organization will provide care to a contiguous service area that stretches from Los Angeles County’s South Bay to the Santa Monica Mountains. Over time, the goal is to expand within that service area to provide quality health care to others whose need for health care remains unmet.

Completing the merger is subject to customary closing conditions, including securing necessary regulatory approvals.

Award, from page 2 age, found himself and his parents forcibly removed from Santa Monica, by Executive Order 9066 signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. The Maeda family spent over three years in what would become the War Relocation Authority Camp at Manzanar, incarcerated without due process in violation of their Constitutional rights. Maeda became a founding and inspiring member of the Venice Japanese American Memorial Monument Committee in 2010, along with other former Manzanar incarcerees, and the Venice artists and activists who had been lobbying for a permanent memorial to the Japanese American experience since after September 11, 2001. On April 27, 2017, the VJAMM Committee dedicate the nine-anda-half-foot tall obelisk of solid black granite before a crowd of over 200 people on the northwest corner of Venice and Lincoln Boulevards. At this intersection, some 1,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from Venice, Santa Monica, and Malibu had gathered in April, 1942 with only what they could carry, for the bumpy bus ride to Owens Valley in Inyo County where they would find their assigned barracks at Manzanar.

Leslie grew up in Los Angeles, where she had lived until her family moved two years ago to Bakersfield, California. Her parents, originally from Guatemala and Mexico, met in Los Angeles where they raised Leslie, and her sister, Leonela. Leslie attended Los Angeles Academy Middle School and Hollywood High School, where she enjoyed her history classes the most. According to her winning essay, Leslie was thirteen years old when she participated in a field trip to Manzanar National Historic Site with middle school teacher, Darrell Warren.

“I remember the long bus ride and the mountain range in the background,” she said.

“I remember seeing all the family pictures. I especially remember seeing children my age at the time, and thinking about how they felt.

I remember seeing the inside of the barracks as well, and thinking how crowded it must have been to hold multiple families inside one barrack.”

“I think that, for the first time, history felt so real, and not simply an event that I read in a book. It was also the first time that I learned something new about World War II and the impact it had on minority communities in the United States.”

In Leslie’s application essay, she wrote, “Ten year later, I am reading about Arnold Maeda’s life, and his story resembles one of the many stories I read about, that day I went to Manzanar [for the first time]. Arnold’s efforts to memorialize an intersection [at] Venice and Lincoln Boulevards, where many Japanese American families were awaiting the unknown, is a reminder to many of us that it has not been just a long time since that tragic time period. Arnold’s “commitment to social justice” has inspired Leslie to work with the Manzanar Committee on the Manzanar Pilgrimage. His “involvement with the Venice Japanese American

Memorial Monument feels like a call to action to me as a future educator to be more involved in preserving history and ensuring the impact of Executive Order 9066 is not forgotten.”

At UCLA, Leslie majored in Chicana/o Studies and minored in Digital Humanities.

She researched and analyzed “the life, history, and culture of Mexican-origin people within the U. S., as well as of other Latina/Latino and indigenous populations in the Americas.” One of her most significant experiences involved “expanding Central American Studies at UCLA. Los Angeles is home to some of the largest Central American communities in the United States, so it was important to advocate for more scholarship and courses.” Along with “many dynamic students, professors, and community members,” Leslie “put together a Central American Studies Symposium at UCLA. I also created and taught my very own class on Central Americans during my time there.” Thanks to everyone’s efforts, “the Chicana/o Studies Department at UCLA was renamed [as] the Department of Chicana/o Studies and Central American Studies.”

Leslie says she looks “forward to getting my teaching credential and an MA [in Education] soon. She envisions herself “teaching social studies courses such as U. S. History and/or Ethnic Studies at the high school level, because she thinks “that history is so important to understand our present.

Especially in this time of uncertainty, we have seen so much about how race, class, gender, etc. impact our daily lives. I think that students are also trying to understand and navigate so many of the recent events that have [just] happened.”

Leslie will be bringing her impressive technical skills to the Manzanar Committee, which include “data visualization, such as presentations, creating websites, and of course any research that has to be done.”

With her event planning skills, Leslie can also “do things like scheduling and figuring out logistics in regards to contacting speakers for the [Manzanar Pilgrimage] event.”

In Leslie’s essay, she closes with this: “Having the opportunity to work with the Manzanar Committee . . . will allow me to engage more with Arnold Maeda’s vision, [that everyone remembers and no one forgets what happened to persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II]. I believe that the first-hand experiences of researching various materials, and working alongside other committee individuals would give me a more in-depth understanding of what Arnold Maeda’s family went through. I also believe I can apply the lessons I learn from this unique learning experience in my future . . . curriculum. Most importantly, I would be able to assist in creating a space, such as the Virtual Manzanar Pilgrimage, where stories like Arnold’s will be highlighted and made accessible for the general public.”

Jeanette Barbara Hasselquist: 1935-2021 Jeanette Barbara Hasselquist, 85, passed away peacefully 1/14/2021. She was born February 1935 in Michigan and spent her childhood in Pacific Palisades, California.

She married in 1953, moved to Malibu and they had six children.

After spending many wonderful years raising children, gardening and painting, she moved to Venice, California and worked as a massage therapist with a loyal following. Jean was also a docent at Will Roger’s Park, the Adamson House, and the Annenberg Beach Club. She became an avid bicyclist, also a hiker with the Sierra Club which she continued into her 80’s.

She bicycled through Switzerland, and enjoyed traveling to Spain, New Zealand, throughout the U.S. and to her parent’s homeland, Sweden. She had a very full life, and adored by all for her love of adventure

and beauty and her caring spirit. She is truly missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Barbara Hogstedt as well as her sons Chris Hasselquist and Eric Hasselquist. She is survived by her exspouse Gus Hasselquist, brothers Roy Hogstedt, Clifford Hogstedt and sister Elaine Hogstedt. Her surviving children Include daughters Linda Alexander, Nancy Hasselquist, Carol Mims, Joi Ciarletta, and their families including nine grand children, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews as well as her close friends Sandra Zukor and Frederick Bangs.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), on January 16, 2021, around 5:00 p.m., at the intersection of Washington Blvd and Speedway Blvd, the suspect and victim became engaged in a verbal altercation. During the verbal altercation, the suspect punched the victim in the jaw causing the victim to lose consciousness.

The victim, was transported to a local area hospital and treated for serious injuries he sustained as a result of the attack, police say.

The suspect is described as a male White or Hispanic, 25 to 30 years old, with black hair and a black beard, standing approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing around 180 pounds.

At the time of the attack, the suspect
